▼ ABSTRACT Emile Durkheim serves as one of the seminal contributors to the field of sociology; his contributions to criminology are numerous as well. Many authors consider Durkheim’s concept of anomie to be his most important contribution to the field of criminology (Lunden, 1972). Durkheim’s anomie theory has been subject to extensive empirical examination, these efforts have resulted in disparate findings. Graeff and Mehlkop (2007) insist this lack of coherence is due to improper operationalization of Durkheim’s anomie by some researchers. In particular, it is the utilization of cross sectional data in these previous studies which contributes to these disparate results. The current endeavor utilizes an opportunity for a unique natural experiment provided by the Bakken region in western North Dakota to test the empirical status of Durkheim’s anomie theory. The recent increase in oil production in western North Dakota has garnered a great deal of attention on both a national and international level. This most recent bout of drilling in the Bakken commenced in 2005, and began what Seifert (2009, p. 2) maintains is a “period of unprecedented growth in the oil industry”. The breakneck pace at which the oil industry has expanded has led to “unprecedented growth” in multiple areas besides oil production, including population and economic prosperity for the region (Hodur & Bangsund, 2015). Disruptions associated with this expansion have drastically altered the realities for many communities in western North Dakota (Fernando & Cooley, 2015). This work presents an empirical assessment of Durkheim’s theory with the Bakken region serving as a crucial test case. Both quantitative trends in violent crime, suicide and worker deaths and qualitative accounts from Bakken residents offer support for theoretical predictions extrapolated from Durkheim’s theory, and by extension his theory of anomie. ▼ The media is a social factor influencing suicide clusters. As a result, the AFSP and the CDC established guidelines for journalists in order to prevent suicide contagion and imitation. Compliance has been inconsistent. However, researchers have failed to explore the qualitative nature of how media reports are framed. Furthermore, research has not examined how online news reports may include features unique to the digital environment. One must also consider how other social factors affect the development of suicide clusters. Family, affluence, peers, and education may influence suicide clustering, especially amongst teens and young adults. Psychological factors, like imitation and contagion, should also be considered. This research examined online media reports and appended comments pertaining to three point suicide clusters involving teens and young adults (Cornell University 2009-2010 and Palo Alto, CA 2009-2010/2014-2015). Eighty-two online news articles and 2,500 comments were analyzed. The researcher conducted discourse analysis and a comparative case study using domains and themes derived from the data. Articles were checked for compliance to the preventative guidelines, and the qualitative nature of violations was explored. Descriptive statistics and timing of publication were used to describe the relationship between media framing and the development of suicide clusters. Comments were examined for both reflexive and oppositional responses to media frames. Data was also open coded for the consideration of other domains and themes. Findings suggested that while the media often failed to adhere to prevention guidelines, the online news reports do not seem to be a large factor in the growth of the point clusters under investigation. Instead, findings suggested that these online reports offer protective features including hyperlinks to prevention resources and scientific facts, as well as public comment spaces for coping and the creation of a collective will. Findings also suggested that other social factors including the affluent family, peer groups, and education might be equally influential. These factors alter levels of social integration and normative regulation, sometimes in an interactional manner. The researcher argued that social factors might lead community members to experience egoistic, fatalistic, and/or anomic suicidal tendencies. Furthermore, both imitation and contagion may be at play. Varje år begår ungefär 1100 personer självmord i Sverige, fortfarande finns det många obesvarade frågor om hur självmord kan förhindras. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka om graden av social integration i ett samhälle kan förklara de skillnader i självmordstal som råder mellan Sveriges kommuner. Èmile Durkheims teori om egoistiska självmord har använts som teoretisk utgångspunkt och i tolkningen av studiens resultat. Studien bygger på data från statistikansvariga myndigheter samt data över självuppskattad hälsa från den nationella folkhälsoenkäten. För att analysera datan har vi använt oss av korrelationsanalyser och regressionsanalyser som vi gjort i statistikprogrammet SPSS. Resultatet visar att det finns statistiskt signifikanta samband mellan arbetslöshet och självmordstal samt mellan lågt socialt deltagande och självmordstal. Båda sambanden är positiva och arbetslösheten har något större betydelse för självmordstalen än andelen med lågt socialt deltagande. Vår slutsats är att social integration tillsammans med andra faktorer kan bidra till att förklara skillnaderna i självmordstalen på kommunnivå.

Approximately 1100 people commit suicide in Sweden every year. There are many unanswered questions about how suicide can be prevented. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the degree of social integration in a society may explain the differences in suicide rates prevailing between Swedish municipalities. “The theory of egoistic suicide”, by Èmile Durkheim, has been used as a theoretical basis and in the interpretation of the study results. The study is based on data from statistical agencies and self-rated health from the national public health survey. We used correlation analyzes and regression analyzes made in the statistical program SPSS to analyze the data. The results shows that there are a statistical significant relationship between both unemployment and suicide, and low social participation and suicide. Both of these correlations are positive, unemployment has slightly higher importance for the suicide rate than the proportion with low social participation. Our conclusion is that the degree of social integration along with other factors can help explain the differences in suicide rates at the municipal level.

Trata-se de uma interpretação dos ensaios nos quais Theodor Adorno criticou autores clássicos da sociologia e discutiu problemas sociológicos de seu tempo. Tal investigação não se destinou em detectar as influências que determinados autores por ventura tenham desempenhado sobre o pensamento de Theodor Adorno, mas demonstrar como a sua teoria social pode ser reconstituída a partir de sua crítica à tradição sociológica. Pretende-se demonstrar que ao tratar da história da sociologia, ao posicionar-se ante as polêmicas e controvérsias científicas, Adorno efetua um alargamento do âmbito da experiência sociológica e leva às últimas consequências o projeto de compreender o processo social através da crítica ao pensamento sociológico moderno. Pode-se afirmar que Adorno nas polêmicas contra o positivismo na sociologia alemã, em suas análises a respeito da obra de Auguste Comte, na interpretação dos trabalhos de Émile Durkheim, através da crítica imanente visa à construção de uma teoria crítica que se compõe a partir da crítica da tradição sociológica.

This text is a interpretation of the essays in which Theodor Adorno criticizes classic authors of sociology and discusses the sociological problems of his time. This investigation dont have the aim of to detect the influences that certain authors by chance would have over the Theodor Adornos thoughts, but to show how his social theory can be rebuilt starting from his criticism of the sociological tradition. I intend to show that, by dealing with the sociologys history, positioning himself before the scientific polemics and controversies, Adorno perform a widening the comprehension of the sociological experience leading to the last consequences the project of understanding of the social processes through the criticism to modern sociological thought.I can assert that Adorn, in the polemics against the positivism in German sociology, in his analysis about the Auguste Comtes work, in the interpretation of Émile Durkheims works, through of immanent criticism, seeks to build a critical theory, which constitutes itself starting from the criticism to sociological tradition.

▼ Après avoir été longtemps taxées de conservatisme, les œuvres de Hegel et de Durkheim font depuis quelques années un retour marqué dans le champ de la théorie sociale (entendue au sens large), dans la mesure où elles alimenteraient une critique des théories d'inspiration néo-kantiennes, notamment celles de John Rawls et de Jürgen Habermas. Ce mémoire discute de l'actualité de deux de ces projets de réactualisation, c'est-à-dire la théorie de la reconnaissance d'Axel Honneth et la sociologie dialectique de Michel Freitag, afin d'en faire ressortir leurs apports et leurs limites respectives pour la compréhension des sociétés contemporaines. Ainsi, nous mettons d'abord en lumière les convergences importantes entre les travaux de Hegel et de Durkheim et esquissons les grandes lignes de leur conception institutionnaliste de la société. Nous montrons comment celle-ci s'appuie sur une critique des conceptions individualistes et libérales du lien social pour articuler, en contrepartie, une théorie de la production institutionnelle de la liberté cherchant à dépasser dialectiquement l'opposition entre objectivité sociale et subjectivité individuelle. Ensuite, nous examinons la reprise de cet institutionnalisme hégéliano-durkheimien chez Axel Honneth. Nous montrons comment ce dernier, à partir d'une lecture de l'œuvre hégélienne fondée sur le paradigme intersubjectiviste de la reconnaissance, en arrive à opposer Hegel et Durkheim sur leur conception de l'État. Nous soulignons ensuite quels diagnostics critiques émet Honneth en s'appuyant sur cette réactualisation interactionniste de Hegel et Durkheim. Finalement, nous montrons comment la sociologie dialectique procède au contraire à un renouvellement cohérent de l'institutionnalisme hégéliano-durkheimien, tout en y intégrant plusieurs acquis de la critique marxienne du capitalisme. Nous exposons ensuite la théorie critique de la société contemporaine élaborée par Michel Freitag en s'appuyant sur la notion hégéliano-durkheimienne de production institutionnelle de la liberté. Cette démarche en trois temps nous permet de mettre en lumière la fécondité de l'héritage théorique de Hegel et de Durkheim pour les théories critiques contemporaines, dans un contexte où l'expansion de la logique systémique propre au capitalisme globalisé érode les médiations politico-institutionnelles héritées de la modernité. ______________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : institutionnalisme, État, sociologie dialectique, théorie de la reconnaissance.

▼ This dissertation might best be described as a discussion and analysis of the tendency towards excess at the heart of modern American culture. In studying excess, the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer—whose writings on the limitless desire of the will had such a profound influence on the writers and thinkers at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century— is linked to Emile Durkheim’s theory, which informs much of this study. Durkheim’s conception of anomie is examined using a combination of etymology and hermeneutics culminating in the understanding of anomie as derangement, or, as rules that are lack of rules. To illustrate this tendency in a concrete way, food is employed as a vehicle for discussion. I outline and critique the various definitions of food, and offer my own definition of food as something that sustains life, but does so through the utilization of the collective constituent elements (vitamins, minerals, calories) that naturally occur within a material substance. Defining food holistically and in terms of nature allows me to also identify unnatural foods by employing Durkheim’s concept of derangement. I trace the origins of excessive willing in modern American culture back to the Protestant religious doctrines of predestination and the calling, arguing that tendency towards worldly asceticism has been removed—replaced by an insatiable desire to consume more—and resulting in the formation of what I am calling the consumption industry. Recontexualizing Mestrovic’s postemotional theory, I contend that the food industry in particular, and the consumption industry in general, rely on prepacked ideas as well as prepacked emotions to sell their foods in modern American society. This includes the consumption industry’s research on human biology and neurology—which has led to the production of deranged foods that actually induce hunger in consumers. Finally, the rise of monopoly capitalism is examined in light of Eros’ unitive power—highlighted through a comparison of Plato, Freud, and Durkheim— leading to the conclusion that the modern spirit of capitalism is postemotional Eros – a drive towards greater unity, divided against itself, fueled by recycled emotions and inflamed desires. ▼ The central claim of my dissertation is that the work of Theodor Adorno offers a valuable framework for reevaluating the philosophical heritage of classical social theory. In his ongoing engagement with the philosophy of German Idealism, and with Hegel in particular, Adorno’s philosophical, sociological, and cultural critical writings involve a critical rethinking of the relationship between subject and object, and between individual and society. I make two primary arguments to substantiate my claim. The first is that Adorno’s work must be understood within the context of the philosophy of Kant and Hegel. In particular, I show that Hegel’s critique of Kantian philosophy structures Adorno’s own understanding of the work of philosophy and of critical social theory. In the first part of the dissertation, I review the substance of Kantian epistemology, and of Hegel’s critique (Chapter 2); I then demonstrate that the Adorno’s critical philosophical procedure is grounded in his reading of Kant and Hegel (Chapter 3). My second primary argument is that Adorno’s attempt to articulate a critique of classical social theory is hampered by his own philosophical commitments. Through a juxtaposition of Marx’s critique of Hegel’s practical philosophy with Adorno’s own critique of Hegel (Chapter 4), I show that Adorno’s commitment to the negativity of the dialectic entails a conception of social theory that has not sufficiently addressed the implications of its materialist transformation. Adorno’s work relies upon a reduction of Hegel that remains problematic and unacknowledged. Next, I use a reading of Durkheim’s own philosophical commitments, through the lens of German Idealism, to show that Adorno’s immanent critique of Durkheim reproduces the aporiae that it seeks to rescue (Chapter 5). In the conclusion to the thesis (Chapter 6), I employ a discussion of the common themes and problems of Adorno’s critical-philosophical interpretation of classical social theory to suggest a reconsideration and renewal of its Hegelian heritage. O trabalho procura compreender as relações entre a teoria sociológica de Émile Durkheim e Esplendores e misérias da cortesãs, de Honoré de Balzac, Madame Bovary, de Gustave Flaubert, e Naná, de Émile Zola, com o objetivo de bosquejar e sintetizar seus principais elementos característicos, associando-os à tradição e à modernidade da vida social na França do século XIX. A partir dos principais trabalhos de Émile Durkheim e dos romances citados, a pesquisa se concentrou em compreender os principais pontos constantes da análise sociológica, assim como em identificar, na temática de cada romance, facetas da vida social francesa que também foram objetos de observação da ciência sociológica na virada do século. Partindo da premissa da gradual autonomização dos campos literário e científico, e as respectivas lutas simbólicas nestes espaços de produção, procuramos analisar as obras sociológicas e literárias atrelando-as ao contexto político, histórico e social no qual eclodiram.

The paper seeks to understand the relationship between Émile Durkheim’s sociological theory and Courtesan’s Splendors and Miseries, by Honoré de Balzac, Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, and Naná, by Zola, with the aim of outlining and synthetizing its main characteristic elements, associating them with the tradition and modernity of social life in nineteenth-century France. From the main works of Émile Durlkheim and the novels cited, the research concentrated on understanding the main points of sociological analysis, as well identifying, in the theme of each novel, facets of franch social life that were also objects of observation of the sociological science at the turn of the century. Starting from the premise of the gradual autonomization of the literary and scientific fields and the respective symbolic struggles in these spaces of production, we seek to analyze the sociological and literary works by linking them to the political, historical and social contexto in which they emerged.

▼ This argument rests on the claim that i) local authority, ii) rites, iii) emotions, iv) ethics and v) action are co-constitutive, mediated somewhat by vi) intra-class divisions and that the outcome of this is vii) the local sacred. The claim is that the local level matters. Local authorities foster particular varieties of the sacred created over long periods. Each is the outcome of local rites at first contested, then affirmed and re-affirmed over time. Long-term diachronic and synchronic comparisons of two local authorities, using methods chosen pragmatically, divined two local authorities' contrasting 'religious lives'. One location demonstrates regular, large-scale and spectacular gatherings, which sustain a shared categorical distinction between a 'Dirty Old Dartford' and a 'Brighter and More Beautiful' future Dartford. Impatient Improvers displaced indignant Economisers, ethical distinctions which correspond only approximately to protagonists' class positions. The second location demonstrates quiescence today. However, though Uxbridge, by common consent, is identified as 'okay', it was once animated by fierce seventeenth century disputes over collection of market tolls and later by mid nineteenth-century Chartist attempts at 'vindication of the working man', articulated locally by Gerald Massey and John Bedford Leno in The Uxbridge Spirit of Freedom and Working Men's Vindicator. Conducted by Working Men (1849). I trace how pronounced ritualised disputes were then supplanted by quieter gatherings such as fruit and vegetable competitions, agricultural shows and horticultural displays. In this way an ordinary and quiet life of domesticity was treasured. Again, class was only part of the account of burgagers versus aristocrat, then artisan versus petty bourgeois (Steinmetz and Wright, 1989). To understand local authority-formation it is necessary to understand its varying ritual and sacred impetus. For this task I develop especially Durkheim's The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life ([1912] 1915) and more recent neo-Durkheimian writing. However, in considering the development of local authority Regulation Theory is acknowledged and the 'relative autonomy' thesis as applied locally (Smith, 1984) which also rests on historical analysis, but of class. But neither Smith nor other neo-Marxist regulationists investigate ritual and affect while much regulation theory is altogether ahistoric. I also find major discrepancies between Marxist regulation theory and the evidence; doubting - especially at the local level - links supposed to exist between regimes of accumulation and modes of regulation (cf. Peck and Tickell, 1992) claimed as necessary to accumulation. While the local actors studied could be said to have enacted class interests - and for this reason we must consider the contribution which neo-Marxist Regulation theory might make - the animation of an interest is treated instead using a neo-Durkheimian approach. Interests remain inert unless invested with passion and this seems unlikely without ritual enactment.…

▼ Modernization theorists posit that rapid economic development can produce increased rates of homicide (Durkheim 1951 [1897]; 1984 [1902]; 1997 [1893]; Shelley 1981). As nations develop, individuals migrate to regions that have greater opportunities for employment. Here, they may experience conflicting norms, a lack of adequate housing and education, and possible underemployment. While modernization theory has been tested extensively, it has not accounted for the way in which nations currently develop. Many nations are recipients of inward foreign direct investment. This form of investment, by multi-national corporations, has produced economic growth, inequality, and urbanization in many countries (Bengoa and Sanchez-Robles 2003; Blomström et al. 1994; Campos and Kinoshita 2002; Sit and Yang 1997). These correlates, economic growth, inequality, and urbanization, have all been linked to homicide (Cole and Gramajo 2009; Nivette 2011). In an examination of up to 62 nations, inward foreign direct investment is found to promote urbanization and inequality. In separate analyses, urbanization is found to increase homicide - suggesting that foreign investment produces homicide by increasing urbanization. Several scholars have suggested that a strong civil society can mitigate societal ills (Currie 1997; Messner and Rosenfeld 1997). Analyses show that a strong civil society, represented by the presence of international-non-governmental organizations, is associated with decreased rates of homicide. The results suggest that nations should be cautious when receiving foreign investment. City infrastructure should be monitored to keep up with the needs of a rapidly growing population. International organizations that deal with issues of rapid growth, including those that provide access to housing and education and those that work at reducing inequality and poverty, should be sought after. ▼ This thesis engages critically with Durkheim's ideas of morality in an ethnographic exploration of the reasons young women in Manokwari (West Papua, Indonesia) choose to maintain chastity prior to marriage. Based on 27 months of fieldwork with an urban, Christian, coastal community, I examine sexual conformity through the motivating force of three emotions – love, fear and hope. Young women wanted to delay their sexual debut so as to not hurt or disappoint their beloved mothers and because they feared being beaten by kin and suffering other forms of violence that sanctioned sexual transgressions. Since pregnancy is understood to lead to school drop-out and forced marriage, hope for a future characterised by secure employment and a harmonious marriage is also a rationale for chastity. These affective logics are explored in the context of cultural constructions of sexual morality at a time of rapid socio-economic change, immoral threats and revitalised enthusiasms for being Christian, and being Papuan. My finding that sentiment structures processes of young women’s moral reasoning and chaste practice supports Durkheim’s contention that ideals – moral standards that are above and beyond individuals – are emotionally based constructs of sacred power. This ethnography contributes to recent anthropological discussions that conceptualise morality and ethics as a realm where actors evaluate, select and enact a range of moral options in order to fashion themselves as ethical subjects. The centrality of emotions and the social in Papuan sexual life, I argue, presents as a challenge to the cognitive and individualistic emphasis in this emergent scholarship. I will respond to these studies, many of which are often based on a critique of Durkheim as a theorist of deterministic and reproductive moral codes, by arguing for the importance of his later in life writings about morality, emotions and the sacred. Durkheim’s notion of the ideal not only offers the possibility of exploring moral agency and subjectivity, it provides a frame to understand why moral life is less, as some scholars suggest, a realm of persuasion and more a realm of constraint. As a concept that presupposes consciousness to be emergent from emotional engagement with social life, from a Durkheimian perspective moral choice is constituted through emotions that shape, as they are shaped by, dimensions of social life considered sacrosanct. The explanatory force of moral ideals are especially apparent in the fears of negative sanctions that construct chastity as a duty and not just desire. I conclude that if reflexivity and ‘freedom’ are to find their rightful place in anthropological accounts of moral life and experience, it must be situated in an acceptance of Durkheim’s moral theory of the ideal.

▼ This thesis provides a new detailed curriculum focused account of an important reform period in Vietnamese higher education policy. It sets out to explore questions of knowledge, specialisation and social order in relation to changing iterations of education policy for higher education in Vietnam between 1986 and 2015, a period of significant changes of higher education policy, as Vietnam aimed to incorporate a stronger market economic agenda and outcomes in its higher education curriculum. More specifically, the study is concerned with knowledge and its relation to the problem of specialisation and social order in successive curricular reforms in Vietnam during the period under study. To achieve these aims, the study employs a particular approach in the sociology of education, one that is grounded in the Durkheimian tradition. In doing so, the thesis has attempted to address this issue in a fresh way from major approaches to curriculum analysis and reform in contemporary educational research. This approach, while acknowledging that the influences of socio-political factors are not to be downplayed in shaping curriculum discourse, argues that how curriculum knowledge is built and modified also depends on its epistemological basis. The evidence base for this research draws on official policy documents supplemented by semi-structured expert interviews. The thesis researches the details of three different phases of major policy change to analyse what the policies say about aims and key agendas of each reform phase and how they set up organisation and structure of curriculum. In doing this it attends to aims and tensions regarding issues of knowledge modernization on the one hand and social order on the other. The analysis approach is both interpretive and critical. Finally, the study draws on Emile Durkheim’s argument on the moral nature of specialisation as one possible way of reflecting on the epistemic and moral tension evident in the reform period. Overall it is argued that successive university curriculum reforms between 1986 and 2015 involve (1) an uneasy attempt on the part of the policymakers to try to put together the American-European style while maintaining a consistent ‘red’ approach, each with unsatisfactory results; (2) an epistemic paradox between a neo-conservative ‘red’ approach in which knowledge from certain disciplines was treated as fixed on the one hand, and, on the other hand, a set of generic approaches in which any forms of knowledge were assumed to be as valid or invalid as any other as long as they served the pragmatist goal of economic development, and (3) a regulative paradox between moral authoritarianism and industrial authoritarianism, both of which deny the sui generis moral nature of specialisation in the Durkheimian sense.
