▼ Recent earthquakes in Chile (2015, 2014, and 2010), Japan (2011), China (2008), and Indonesia (2004) are reminders of the possible occurrence of a long-
duration, large-magnitude earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone along the Pacific Northwest Coast of the United States. Although the
duration of an earthquake is expected to affect the response of structures, current seismic design specifications use response spectra to identify the hazard and do not consider
duration effects. A few reasons contribute to this situation. One is that earthquakes with long durations are rare in practice. Most events are shorter, and
duration for these events does not present design issues not already captured in the response spectrum. Also, research to date has not presented a coherent and persuasive case that
duration should be included. Results have supported both sides of the case, and not left provision specification writers with a compelling case for adding
duration. The available records from recent long-
duration earthquakes, such as 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan and 2010 Maule earthquake in Chile, made it possible to better study the topic.Experimental program and analytical investigations were conducted in this study to investigate the influence of earthquake
duration on structural response of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns. The main objectives were to quantify the effect of
duration on collapse capacity and to recommend whether this effect should be included in seismic design provisions. The first phase of the analytical investigation, i.e. the pre-test analysis phase, used an OpenSees model that was calibrated against previous experimental results for a Column designated as NF-2. This model was used to select the experimental program ground motions. Five ground motions were selected for the five identical specimens, four long-
duration motions and one with a short-
duration. The main objective of the pre-test analysis was to choose motions with different durations that have similar or close response spectra. These motions were selected with a target to impose maximum displacement demands on the specimens that are less than the maximum displacement capacity, 9.8 in. (13.6 % drift ratio), previously achieved from Column NF-2. Imposing less displacement demands than the column capacity allowed for studying the effect of the increased number of displacement cycles resulting from long-
duration motions. Additionally, experimental fragility curves were developed using data from over 25 bridge column models that had been tested on shake tables or under lateral quasi-static loads. The developed experimental fragility curves were used along with the pre-test OpenSees analysis to predict the expected damage for the specimens before testing. The experimental program consisted of two phases. In phase I, three columns were tested (Columns LD-J1, SD-L, and LD-C1) on a shake table using ground motions from the 2011 Tohoku (long-
duration), 1989 Loma Prieta (short-
duration), and 2010 Maule (long-
duration) earthquakes. The…

▼ There are many non climatic factors influencing the agricultural potential of an area, but of the climatic factors, the most important are the distribution in time and the amount of rainfall. The purpose of this study is to probe rainfall variability based on the persistence model which follows a theoretical distribution, and the theory of runs which requires that time series of rainfall data be considered as a success or failure about a selected truncation level. The overall objective of the study was to investigate the rainfall patterns, the agricultural factors, some drought run parameters and the frequency of their occurrence during the period 1976-2002 in relation to maize yields. The methodology included the use of probability sampling techniques, time series analysis, magnitude frequency analysis and the principal axis factor analysis in which 15 variables were correlated yielding six factors which were then orthogonally rotated and their factor matrices interpreted in terms of content of the variables that loaded most highly.
The major findings were that there exists high rainfall variation within Lusaka Province whilst coefficients of variation show that Lusaka Province displays no evident trend. It has been established that it were wet spells in drought years that increased maize yields. Lusaka is prone to one-year droughts with the most severe droughts not being the most intense droughts. It has been discovered that before 1988 few factors influenced high maize yields whilst after 1989 the factors at interplay doubled causing Lusaka Province to plummet in rank in level of production. The conclusion was that there was an increase in the length of the growing season without a corresponding increase in maize yield due to the strong influence of the Southern Oscillation Index and Sea Surface Temperatures on rainfall variability. For purposes of implementing study results, recommendations were made. These included the need for an effective early warning unit, adapting farming to wet spells, improved input provision and marketing, and need for further research on individual agricultural factors. Application of study results should help farmers and agricultural officers in adopting the right kind of farming methods adapted to the changing environment and agricultural practices in the country

▼ It is known when synthesising nanomaterial on laboratory scale, a variation in a single synthesis parameter may alter the product. Numerous synthesis techniques have been employed in the synthesis of titanium dioxide with varying phase, size and shape. It was found that changes in the phase directly affect their properties and application, such as treating of textile wastewater by photodegradation. However, when synthesising nanoparticles, changes to any reaction parameters and/or kinetics can have a desirable or undesirable effect on titanium dioxide nanoparticles. There is therefore a need to understand how HCl acid concentration (homogeneous catalyst) and shortened gel formation duration affect synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles and photocatalytic properties.
A sol-gel followed by hydrothermal treatment was employed to synthesise 2.8 grams of titanium dioxide nanorods for the duration of 96 hours, initially. A systematic study was conducted to exploit reaction kinetics by varying HCl acid concentration (3, 4, 5 molar), water feed for TiO2 gel formation (72, 24, 12 hours), and hydrothermal treatment time for the transformation of gel to crystalline TiO2 (1–20 hours). The photocatalytic activity of synthesised TiO2 nanoparticle was evaluated, when irradiated with a UV-C bulb to degrade an industrial textile dye, methylene blue. Systematic studies were successful in identifying the effects HCl acid concentration, gel formation time and lengthened hydrothermal treatment time have on TiO2 nanoparticles’ phase, size and shape. Increased HCl concentrations for shortened gel formation times resulted in mixed phases of TiO2, decreases in particle size and particle shape deformed from nanorods. Increased photocatalytic activity was found for a decrease in the rutile and increase in the brookite phase percentage, but this plateaued after 42% brookite phase. Furthermore, lengthened hydrothermal treatment assisted in phase transformation of particles synthesised at shortened gel formation times for high HCl acid concentrations. Pure rutile TiO2 was synthesised at a sixth of the initial synthesis time. Furthermore, the effects of changes in nanoparticles on the photocatalytic activity was discussed. Moreover, exploiting reaction kinetics resulted in the synthesis of a more efficient photocatalytically active TiO2 nanoparticle sample at shortened synthesis time.

▼ Objectives
Using the filled-
duration illusion, this study investigated the existence of an independent temporal code operating in working memory. Extending research suggesting the principle distinction between filled- and empty-temporal-intervals is additional non-temporal information in filled-intervals, we explored whether the working memory mechanism of binding operates between temporal and non-temporal information in filled-interval memory representations. Such a finding would evidence a temporal code independent of non-temporal codes in empty-intervals. Previously no study has applied this aspect of the working memory framework to cognitive levels of time perception.
Methods
Thirty-two participants completed psychophysical tasks adopting the
duration discrimination reminder task procedure in two experiments. One experiment looked at visual, shape information, the other looked at spatial, location information Reference intervals lasted 300msec and test intervals ranged from 200msec – 400msec. Intervals were either filled or empty. In half of the trails test-intervals were marked by non-temporal stimuli not matching those presenting reference-intervals (changing in shape or location). We predicted an effect of unmatched non-temporal information only on filled-intervals.
Results
Analyses investigated three dependent variables: accuracy, proportion of ‘longer’ responses and bisection point. In the location experiment, a significant effect of unmatched non-temporal stimuli was found only in filled-interval trials, in ‘longer’ analyses. Similar results were reported in the shape experiment, finding an additional effect of interval-type (filled versus empty). Analysis of means showed that unmatched non-temporal information effected filled-intervals in location and shape experiments differently.
Conclusion
An effect of changes in non-temporal information on only filled-interval trials indicates the existence of an independent temporal code, operating in working memory, with a capability to bind with non-temporal information. We suggest that differences in filled-intervals in the location and shape experiments reflect different binding processes operating between temporal information and these two types of non-temporal information.

▼ Traditionally civil infrastructure designs were rendered using rainfall data from dated historical records. However, recent studies have shown that the magnitude and intensity of historical precipitation events do not exhibit the extreme nature of precipitation events that are projected to occur in the future. Increasing extreme rainfall trends have already been documented in Canada. Therefore there are growing concerns that the aging infrastructure in southern Ontario will be unable to function effectively and as a result the frequency of floods is expected to increase. Updating intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves to account for extreme precipitation events is vital to ensure that the consequences of floods are mitigated. This study first reviewed the most robust techniques for updating IDF curves, and applied a select set of approaches to create IDF curves for stations within southern Ontario.
Three robust techniques – the at-site method, the regional frequency analysis method, and a future IDF curve development technique – were compared with one another to determine which technique was most suitable for updating IDF curves in southern Ontario. Results showed that the difference between the at-site method and the regional frequency analysis method was marginal for short return periods, however for larger return periods larger differences were observed. Future IDF statistic results showed that for the 2050s there were minor differences in the increases in rainfall intensities when comparing with the at-site and the regional frequency analysis method. For the 2100s there were larger increases in rainfall intensities compared to the at-site and the regional frequency analysis method, especially for larger return periods. These results suggest that it is worthwhile for regions within southern Ontario to update their IDF curves using the future IDF curve technique, however it is recommended that additional climate models, emission scenarios and downscaling techniques involved in future IDF curve construction are explored.

▼ In this thesis I distinguish between two types of temporal intervals: internally-defined and
externally-defined. Prior research on how humans estimate the durations of temporal intervals has
been focussed almost entirely on externally-defined intervals. Because internally-defined intervals
have been largely ignored, our level of understanding of how people estimate the durations of these
intervals rests on whether they do so using roughly the same set of mental processes as for
externally-defined intervals. I sought to collect some initial evidence regarding whether people do
indeed estimate the two types of durations using similar processes. A key finding was that
estimating the duration of an externally-defined interval (a stimulus on a computer screen)
interfered with performance on a concurrent task whereas estimating the duration of an internally
defined interval (a response time) did not (Chapter 2). This finding extended to several different
temporal and non-temporal tasks (Chapter 3). The results indicate that processes underlying
estimation of internally-defined intervals may differ in meaningful ways from those underlying
estimation of externally-defined intervals.

▼ Children differ in their school performances, which are influenced by their executive functions (EF). The cause of these differences can probably be explained by individual differences in sleep
duration and temperament. The moderating effect of temperament on the association between sleep
duration and EF and mutual relations have been studied. The sample consisted of 499 ‘normal’ children (228 boys, 271 girls) between 9 to 12 years (M = 10.5; SD = 0.85). Sleep
duration is measured by a sleep log, temperament factors Extraversion, Negative Affectivity and Effortful Control by the EATQ-R. EF is divided in working memory (Visual digit span task) and inhibition (PVT Go/No-Go). ANCOVA has showed only an association between shorter sleep
duration and less working memory for introvert children and the other way around (F(2, 410) = 5.15, p = .006), but not for neutral extraverted children or high extraverted children. Also other temperament factors did not show moderation effects. Furthermore, shorter sleep was significantly related with less inhibition (r = .12), but with better working memory (r = -.52). Extraverted children differ from introverted children on working memory (F(2, 433) = 3.24, p = .040) and little Effortful Control differs from the average level of Effortful Control (F(2, 436) = 3.55, p = .030). There were no other significant results in this study. This study has shown that school performances are not only influenced by cognitive capacities, but also by sleep and child’s temperament traits.

▼ Sleep
duration and chronotype are known to have an influence on inhibitory control in adolescents. To date, there are no studies that have looked into this relationship in in school age children . The question in this research is, is the relationship between chronotype and inhibition mediated by sleep
duration in children between the age of 9 and 11 years old? The sample included 594 children between 9 and 11 years old (M=10.48, SD=.82). There were 227 boys and 263 girls (from 104 children gender was unknown). Three instruments have been used; the first instrument was the Children's ChronoType Questionnaire (CCTQ). This questionnaire measures whether the child would a morning type or an evening type. The second instrument was a sleep diary. This sleep diary measures different elements of sleep, for this study the average sleep
duration was used. The last instrument that was used, was the inhibition Psychomotor Vigilance Task GoNogo (PVT GoNogo). This instrument measures inhibition with the percentage of correct Nogo's. In this study, chronotype did not serve as a significant predictor for inhibition. In addition, chronotype did not serve as a significant predictor for sleep
duration. However, sleep
duration did serve as a significant predictor for inhibition (β =.12, t(459) = 2.48, p =.014). Longer
duration of sleep was correlated to better inhibition. There was no evidence for sleep
duration as a mediator between chronotype and inhibition in children between the age of 9 and 11 years old. Information on the influence of sleep on inhibition problems can be valuable to both professionals and parents. Sleeping problems should also be considered, when there are inhibition problems.

▼ A study was conducted from December 2006 to July 2007 in trypanosomosis endemic areas of western Amhara with the objective of assessing trypanocidal drug resistant Trypanosoma congolense isolates and current status of trypanocidal drug management practices.Experimental trypanocidal drug sensitivity test was performed in experimentally infected mice using combined and separately pooled trypanosomal isolates obtained from different districts. This was complimented by a survey that targeted farmers and health professionals involved in veterinary service aiming at current status of trypanocidal drugs. Questionniary survey on farmers revealed that 71.7 % of the respondents had the experience of using trypanocidal drugs by themselves and at least 54 % of them practiced underdosing with any of the three trypanocidal drugs (diminazene aceturate, isometamidium chloride and homidium bromide). Furthermore, from questionnaire survey on professionals, 55.1% of the respondents in veterinary service (MoARD) indicated the use of increased dosages as a measure to avert treatement failures. Point prevalence of trypanosomosis obtained from cattle screened for isolation was found to be 12.4% in Debreelias, 20% in Dembecha and 27.2% for Jabitahnan. T. congolense accounted for 72.9% the overall trypanosomosis cases. The drugs tested failed to permanently clear the parasite, being relapsing at 5.8±0.96 days with 70 mg/kg diminazine aceturate; 14.2±1.99 days with 10 mg/kg isometamidium chloride and 4.6±3.75 days with 10 mg/kg homidium bromide. The difference in the relapse
duration was found to be statistically significant among drugs, being longer with isometamidium (p<0.001) than others. The drugs were also unable to permanently clear trypanosomes from the combined pool when given in combination at intervals, as there was a 40 % relapse with 70 mg/kg diminazene aceturate initial treatement followed by isometamidium 5 mg/kg at 17±3.92days. However sanative pairs appeared to be relatively effective than single drug alone, as relapse
duration was significantly longer (P<0.001) in the former than the latter. Separate pools from each district was also used to compare the relative contribution of drug resistance phenotype in combined pool and similar results were observed (relapses at 7.8±1.57 days; 7.0±1.24 days and 5.8±0.96 days with 70 mg/kg diminazene aceturate; 17.50±1.88 days; 18.20±2.66 days and 11.00±2.15 days with 10 mg/kg isometamidium chloride in pools from Debreelias, Dembecha and Jabitahnan, respectively). The present study revelaed the presence of multidrug resistance that could most probably be attributed to the drug-use practices excercised
the livestock production system. Wise use of currently available trypanocidals in conjunction with other alternative control strategies should be adopted as timely solution for the current problem of trypanosomosis in the region.

▼ Designs immediate challenge is not optimizing the way we approach the pragmatic it is about establishing an understanding of the endurance and duration of the artifacts we make. This thesis argues for the integration of temporal principles into the process and practice of design; it encompasses experiments as a way to reflect on and articulate the values of duration. Understanding temporal form as it relates to design gives a better view into the potential of broader possibilities, as well as a more robust and precise way to describe choices and preferences.

▼ Background: In Sweden, the breastfeeding rate has decreased in recent years. Breastfeeding provides short-term and long-term health effects of the child and the woman. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate planning and duration of breastfeeding, and examine whether there were differences between Swedish-born and foreign-born women regarding duration of breastfeeding during the child's first year. Design / Methodology: This is a survey in which 3390 women responded to a questionnaire at enrollment prenatal, 2581 women responded to a questionnaire in late pregnancy and 1257 women responded one year after pregnancy. The material was analyzed with descriptive statistics. Results: There were 1135 women who responded to both questionnaires regarding planning and duration of breastfeeding. A significant difference was found between the planned breastfeeding and duration of breastfeeding. There were 260 women who breastfed for a shorter period and 265 who breastfed for a longer period than they had planned. This issue included all women regardless of country of birth. A large proportion of women who breastfed the child at the age of 12 months wanted to continue breastfeeding until the baby was 1-1.5 years or as long as the child himself wanted. It showed no difference regarding duration of breastfeeding between Swedish-born and foreign-born women. The most common reasons why women chose not to breastfeed was that the woman or the child did not want to. The most common reasons that women choose to stop breastfeeding was that the child did not get satisfied or that the child did not want to suckle. Conclusion: Differences were observed regarding breastfeeding planning and duration of breastfeeding. Care needs to focus on providing support and education to women in order to increase motivation to breastfeeding.

▼ This study investigated whether perceptual fluency could affect duration judgments. Fluency refers to levels of subjective ease, in which stimuli can be processed (Lanska, Olds, & Westerman, 2014). The study was conducted with experimental within group factorial design. Visual stimuli were selected from Snodgrass and Vanderwarts (1980) standardized set of 260 pictures. Pairs were made with low and high levels of complexity. Duration was about 1000 milliseconds with .10 variations. 1/3 of pairs were without variation. Participants were asked to judge which image was presented for longest time. Total amount of participants was 37. Main hypothesis was that low levels of complexity would be judged, to a greater frequency, as having been presented for longer duration. Observed mean (M= 20.27, SD = 2.90) was slightly lower than level of chance (M = 21) and the difference was non significant, t(36) = -1.53, p > .13. The null hypothesis was not rejected.

▼ The first chapter studies the rate of long-term unemployment, which spiked during the Great Recession. To help explain this, I exploit the systematic and counter-cyclical differences in unemployment duration across occupations. This heterogeneity extends the tail of the unemployment duration distribution, which is necessary to account for the observed level of long-term unemployment and its increase since 2007. This chapter introduces a model in which unemployment duration and occupation are linked; it measures the effects of occupation-specific shocks and skills on unemployment duration. Here, a worker will be paid more for human capital in his old occupation but a bad shock may make those jobs scarce. Still, their human capital partly ``attaches'' them to their prior occupation, even when searching there implies a longer expected duration. Hence, unemployment duration rises and becomes more dispersed across occupations. Redistributive shocks and business cycles, as in the Great Recession, exacerbate this effect.
For quantitative discipline, the model matches data on the wage premium to occupational experience and the co-movement of occupations' productivity. The distribution of duration is then endogenous. For comparison's sake, if a standard model with homogeneous job seekers matches the job finding rate, then it also determines expected duration and understates it. That standard model implies just over half of the long-term unemployment in 1976-2007 and almost no rise in the recent recession. But, with heterogeneity by occupation, this chapter nearly matches long-term unemployment in the period 1976-2007 and 70% of its rise during the Great Recession.
The second chapter studies the link between wage growth and the match of a worker's occupation and skills. The notion here is that if human capital accumulation depends on match quality, poor matches can have long-lasting effects on lifetime earnings. I build a model that incorporates such a mechanism, in which human capital accumulation is affected by imperfect information about one's self. This informational friction leads to matches in which a worker accumulates human capital more slowly and has weaker earnings growth.
To get direct evidence, the chapter pieces together two sets of data on the skills used by an occupation and the skills a worker is particularly good at. Data on occupations describes occupations by the intensity with which they use many dimensions of workers' knowledge, skills and abilities. To pair, we have data on tests taken by respondents in a panel that tracks occupations and earnings. The test designers created a mapping between their tests and the occupational descriptors, which allows us to create two measures. The first measure of match quality is just the dot product between the dimensions of workers' skills and utilization rate of these skills by occupations. The second measure mismatch relative to an optimal matching computed using the Gale-Shapley algorithm for stable pairs. In both, worse matches have significantly slower…

▼ There is a persistent gap in the durations of unemployment between races in the U.S. labor market. This paper examines one possible explanation for that gap, differences in job history and human capital acquired on the job. Specific human capital can lead to a mismatch between offers and expectations that can lead to a longer unemployment spell. It is found that the number of jobs reduces the length of unemployment, while the length of the most recent tenure at an occupation is found to increase it. However, neither of these factors explain much of the differences in unemployment durations between race and ethnic groups.

▼ The Government of the Republic of China has awarded the Taiwan High Speed Railway Co.(THSRC) a concession to design, build and operate a high speed railway in west Taiwan. The concession period is 35 years commencing from July 1998 and all the revenue operation shall be followed the agreement with government within the concession period. Revenue operation has been conducted since January 2007 after the completion of construction, and it has experienced more than seven years. The high speed railway offers journey time around 90 minutes from Taipei in the north to Kaohsiung in the south. It makes Taiwan into a new stage of âone day peripheral circleâ and it becomes major vehicle in the west corridors approximately 345km from Taipei in the north to Kaohsiung in the south.
High Speed Railway(HSR) project has been planned during Taiwanâs rapidly economic growth period, and all the five major private investors have much optimism on financial and ridership. In order to speed up the HSR construction their have more than 2,000 professional engineers from 20 countries to join the project and lot of them have been transferred into operation organization in the later. Their shall have many discrepancies in the organization management between construction
duration and operation
duration, however the management regime of construction was seldom changed. It would not only cause some activities of revenue operation with inconsistent and low effectiveness, but also make operation cost increasing. Additionally ridership cannot reach the expected target has also cause financial difficulties.
The study is using company strategic, material procurement & management and engineering elements to investigate the key factors of operation organization with low effectiveness through HSR maintainer opinion.
Now no matter the operation strategic of THSRC is project finance or sustainable management, reducing operation cost would be the major strategic to be faced in the near future. It is expected the studying can be as a reference by operator to consider reduction operation cost.

duration of ESBL-PE was assessed. Eight studies were conducted in patients, two in NICU patients, and four in non-patients (travelers, adopted children, medical students). Approximately half of adult (hospitalized) patients carried ESBL-PE after 6 months (range 33-53%). After 12 months, this percentage was around 25%. Median carriage time was reported from 98 days till more than 9 months. For a minority of patients carriage time was more than three years. Prolonged carriage with ESBL-PE was associated with outpatient oral use of antibiotics, urine catheters, chronic wounds, immobility and percutaneous gastrostomy, E. coli phylogroup B2, and CTX-M group 9. In NICU patients, median carriage time was 12.5 months, but carriage persisted after 12 months for 5% of individuals. Prolonged
duration was observed for K. pneumonia or K. oxytoca species compared to S. marcensens, antibiotic treatment and caesarian section. Of travelers, 24% carried ESBL-producing E. coli after 3-8 months. Mean carriage time for 22 adopted children from Mali was 9 months. Out of 41 Chinese medical students, 68% remained colonized for 4 months. Results vary greatly and are hard to compare or generalize for many reasons such as small sample size, different definitions for
duration, persistence and clearance, absence of molecular information, selection bias, and global differences. A longer
duration of carriage with ESBL-PE might influence the risk of carriage with ESBL-PE for the patient itself and transmission to household members and the general population. Routine screening and/or contact restriction is suggested for previously ESBL-PE positive patients. Perhaps focus should be more on prevention of transmission than on clearance, because clearance is hard to accomplish. To estimate
duration of carriage with ESBL-PE in the general population, large studies are needed.

▼ This population-based retrospective cohort study
describes breastfeeding patterns and identifies the determinants of
longer exclusive breastfeeding among 4,533 mother-infants pairs in
two regions of Nova Scotia, Canada between 2006 and 2009.
Multivariate logistic and proportional hazard regression analyses
were used to model breastfeeding practices. While 64.1% (95%
CI=62.7-65.5) of mothers initiated breastfeeding, only 10.4%
(9.5-11.4) of mothers exclusively breastfed for the recommended six
months; 21% (19.7-22.3) of mothers continued to breastfeed at six
months, but not exclusively. Six risk factors are independently
associated with poorer breastfeeding practices: lower maternal
education, no partner, higher pre-pregnancy body mass index,
smoking during pregnancy, no breast contact between dyads within
one hour of birth, and no intention of breastfeeding. Rates of
exclusive breastfeeding remain lower in these districts than
elsewhere in Canada. Understanding determinants of longer exclusive
breastfeeding is critical to assist policy makers and health care
providers in better supporting mothers and newborns.

▼ This dissertation investigates why rebels decide to
continue fighting costly
wars instead of seeking the benefits of
peaceful settlement. It explores the
possibility that the means
rebels use to exploit economic opportunities during
civil war
makes continued war more likely. The central argument is
that
civil wars are longer when economic opportunities offset rebel
costs
of war. Beginning with a basic model of bargaining and
costly war, the
theoretical framework describes how opportunity
for rebels to profit during
war reduces the potential range of
bargaining settlements, thereby making
continued war more likely.
As an extension of this finding, permanent and
intermittent means
of financing rebellion are examined through a theory of
warlords
and bandits. Longer wars are those in which rebels pursue economic
opportunities through regularized means of financing in the manner
of a stationary bandit.
A quantitative, cross-country analysis of
civil wars is used to test hypotheses
derived from this theory. An
original dataset of civil wars since
1946 catalogs four principal
sources of rebel economic opportunity: looting,
taxes, natural
resource exploitation, and external support. Civil wars are
longer
when rebel groups impose a system of taxes and when rebel groups
receive external support. Next, three case studies of civil wars in
the Philippines
are used to further develop the theory and
investigate the means of
rebel financing. In the Huk rebellion
(1950-1954), rebels acted as roving
bandits by looting to gather
resources needed to fight the war. The Moro
National Liberation
Front took on the role of Robin Hood in the Moro war
(1971-1977),
relying on external support and acting as the primary conduit
of
such aid within the southern Philippines. In the war with the
Communist
Party of the Philippines and the New People’s Army
(1981-1992), rebels
established a system of taxes and installed
shadow governments to provide
public goods and protection. The
case studies thus not only confirm the phenomenal
regularity of
rebel financing, but also confirm the postulated causal
mechanisms
of the stationary bandit theory as applied to rebel groups in a
civil war.

▼ Background: Chronic pain is a highly prevalent issue in both medicine and public health. Chronic pain is a serious, debilitating condition that negatively influences individuals by inhibiting functional status. Pain medications are utilized to alleviate chronic pain but have adverse effects, including sleep insufficiency, which is known to negatively affect health and well-being. This study examines the association between pain medication and sleep
duration. The study also examines the extent to which patient satisfaction with their health care moderates the association between pain medication usage and sleep
duration. Using survey and electronic medical record data from a patient sample (n=232) within a small Midwestern health center, we hypothesized that adults receiving pain medications would be more likely to get suboptimal sleep compared to adults who did not receive pain medications. Methods: Patients on pain medications were identified by EMR. Sleep
duration and patient satisfaction was self-reported. Logistic regression models were used to assess associations between receipt of pain medication and healthy (vs not) sleep
duration. A statistical interaction between pain medication use and health care satisfaction was added to the model. Linear regression models were employed to evaluate if the predicting variables within the models were predictive of the outcome variable (sleep
duration). Results: Pain medication usage was associated with suboptimal sleep. Discussion: Pain medication was associated with sleep
duration. Further research should be done on the association between pain medication and sleep
duration with a larger sample of patients and a population representative of other FQHCs. Future research should be done to examine the association between patient satisfaction, pain medication, and sleep
duration. Chronic pain selfmanagement interventions can be implemented to achieve positive health outcomes for chronic pain patients.

▼ How labour markets operate in an economic system?
has long been a dominant area of newlineresearch in economics, and
that has received tremendous scholarly attention from diverse
newlinefields of social sciences. The functioning of the labour
markets, according to conventional newlinewisdom, is primarily
confined to the two fundamental axioms of market: demand and
supply. newlineFrom a pragmatic point of view, these two axioms
represent two principal agents: workers newlineand firms. More
aptly, while the former represents the supply of labour, the latter
represents newlinethe demand for labour. Put it in a slightly
different way, whilst the supply of labour deals newlinewith the
number of people who participate in the labour markets, the demand
for labour newlinerepresents the firms that decide how many workers
to be hired. What is essentially important newlineis that two
agents workers and firms- possess two distinct motives. On the one
hand, when newlinethe workers tend to maximise their well-being,
called utility, firms, on the other hand, attempt newlineto
maximise profit. The conflicting interests between the workers
decision to participate in newlinethe labour markets and the firm s
decision to hire workers are determined by wage rates, newlinewhich
are paid for the productive services rendered by workers. Quite
clearly, with related to newlinethe level of wage earnings, the
demand for and the supply of labour move in opposite
newlinedirection. When the level of wages increases, workers are
more likely to supply their newlineproductive services, but few
firms are willing to hire them, and vice versa. In a competitive or
newlinea free market economy, these conflicting interests
ultimately attain an equilibrium point, a newlinesituation of
market in which the demand for and the supply of labour are equal.
In fact, this newlinesimplistic representation of the operation of
the labour markets can also be interpreted from newlinetwo distinct
angles. newline

▼ Abstract
Background: Previous studies have shown cognitive enhancement effects of well-practiced experiences that involve executive cognition, such as musical and language abilities (e.g. Bialystok and DePape, 2009).
Aims: The present study aims to investigate whether there is a difference in the enhancement of executive processing between monolingual-musicians and bilinguals, and what the effects may be for people with intensive musical experience as well as linguistic experience, and confidence in two or more languages. A battery of attentional and temporal attentional tasks, as well as
duration discrimination and temporal comparison tasks were administered.
Methods: There were a total of 73 participants taking part in the study, based on their music and language abilities the participants were divided into four groups: Bilinguals, Monolingual-Musicians, Bilingual-Musicians and one control group consisting of monolingual non-musicians. The groups were compared on four different executive functioning tasks, all involving sustained and selective attention, response suppression and
duration estimation, looking at performance for both auditory and visual stimuli.
Results: The results suggest a positive effect of musicianship across all tasks, except the last temporal comparison tasks. Bilinguals performed comparatively poorly, and there was a suggestive effect of bilingualism being at a disadvantage for the tasks involved in the study, as the Bilingual-Musicians did not show any potential enhancement effect of performance based on language experience, whereas musicianship had a clear additive effect on pitch discrimination.
Conclusion: Even though musicians were found to perform better on all tasks, this does not necessarily suggest modularity-specificity, but could be generalized enhanced cognitive phenomena originating from original cognitive differences, e.g. a better working memory, that does not relate to musicianship per se. The results also suggest that bilinguals might have low response inhibitory control, as opposed to conceptual control, which could relate to misperception of time.

▼ Compressed natural gas (CNG) is an alternative fuel of interest for internal combustion engines (ICEs) in the mass transit and vocational applications. Increasingly, due to the abundant supply of shale gas, there is interest in heavy duty and in passenger vehicle applications of natural gas. CNG combustion yields significant reductions in particulate emissions compared to diesel. However, the inherently low flame speed of CNG decreases thermal efficiency and increases toxic aldehyde emissions in ICEs, requiring optimization of spark timing. Due to its increased flame speed compared to methane and liquid fuels, hydrogen has been shown to “assist” natural gas combustion in that it decreases combustion
duration, reduces minimum spark advance for best torque (MBT timing), enhances combustion efficiency and can reduce emissions of unburned fuel.
The literature contains many studies that demonstrate hydrogen’s ability to burn faster than other fuels and that acknowledge hydrogen’s uniqueness compared to other fuels in terms of its mass diffusivity, wide flammability range, and minimum ignition energy, but these studies rarely attempt to explain such characteristics in a scientific manner. Most review articles focus on a particular aspect of technical implementation of hydrogen as a combustible fuel in lieu of a holistic view of hydrogen assisted combustion of hydrocarbon fuels in ICEs. The intention of the present work was to build on the understanding of the role of hydrogen in the spark-ignited combustion of natural gas, by confirming common findings in the literature, namely that the addition of hydrogen to natural gas enables spark retard due to enhanced early flame development, and that retarded spark at MBT for HCNG results in concentrated heat release near TDC, improving the efficiency compared to CNG alone. The primary objective of the present work is to perform detailed heat release analysis to evaluate the following hypothesis: while swirl can be employed to improve the sluggish early flame development of CNG, using hydrogen to supplant swirl enables improved early flame development without compromising engine efficiency due to convective heat losses caused by enhanced fluid motion.
The present work employs a single-cylinder spark-ignited engine to study the effects of intake-induced turbulence and turbulence intensity on hydrogen assisted natural gas (HCNG) combustion. The effects with hydrogen assisted combustion are examined through comparison with combustion of CNG alone. Experiments were conducted at 2000 rpm with both fixed spark timing and adjusting spark to maintain MBT, as well as at 2750 rpm with MBT timing alone. Each study was conducted at 1.5 bar brake mean effective pressure (BMEP), stoichiometric equivalence ratio and MBT timing for each fuel; fueling rate was fixed as the throttle was opened to achieve leaner conditions (engine load is not fixed). Results with a high level of in-cylinder swirl (one intake port fully blocked) were compared to results with a quiescent in-cylinder flow…

▼ Sleep problems in children are common and can affect their health. This study examined whether sleep
duration mediates the association between sleep problems and behavioral problems in children from nine to eleven years. The study consisted of a research among a group of 482 children, 220 boys and 260 girls (two unknown). The mean age of the children was 10.5 years (SD = 0.83). Their parents were asked to fill out the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), which were used to measure sleep disturbances and internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems of the children respectively. In addition, parents kept an online sleep diary for a week to collect information about the sleep
duration of the child. Regression analyses showed a significant association between sleep problems and both internalizing (β = .24) and externalizing behavioral problems (β = .26), as well as a significant negative association between sleep problems and sleep
duration (β = -.21). Sleep
duration and - both internalizing and externalizing - behavioral problems were not significantly related. The results therefore suggest that sleep
duration did not mediate the association between sleep problems and behavioral problems. The overall findings highlight the importance that parents should be aware of sleep problems underlying the behavioral problems of their child. Besides, sleep problems may serve as a warning for a higher risk of developing behavior problems. The findings of this study may be useful in interventions to treat, control or prevent sleep and behavioral problems. It should however be noted that other factors could influence the association between sleep problems and behavioral problems and more research is needed to further explore this association.

▼ Sleep deprivation and disturbances are a common problem among children (prevalence of 25-40 percent) and have impact on executive functioning, such as inhibition. Studies in adults demonstrated that temperament influences this association. This study examined extraversion as a moderator of the association between sleep
duration and inhibition in 401 school-aged children (183 boys and 218 girls) aged 9 to 12 years old. Children filled out the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire-Revised (EATQ-R) and completed a three minute version of a revised Psychomotor Vigilance Task Go/No-Go. Their parents kept a sleep log for one week. ANCOVA results showed no significant association between average sleep
duration on weekdays and inhibition, neither a significant association between extraversion and inhibition. No significant interaction effect was found for average sleep
duration on weekdays with extraversion on inhibition. To conclude, no relationship between sleep
duration and inhibition was found. Extraversion can’t be seen as a moderator for the association between sleep
duration and inhibition. In order to enhance the knowledge concerning sleep deprivation, future research should focus on the association between sleep deprivation or sleep difficulties and executive functioning, as well as temperamental traits moderating this relation.

Three single phase current fed converters operating in pwm mode, are combined as an active power filter of 15 kVA. The undesired limit cycle shown by the system is eliminated by feedback loop compensation. Analog, computer and analytical models which predict remarkably similar system responses are used to investigate the technique. The analytical model involves describing function methods. The losses in the converters are modelled, and used as a feedback reference to allow losses in the system to be accurately covered from the supply. The system behaves as an accurate, fast active filter for distortion in power networks. Results illustrating this include the time and frequency response of the system for different reference currents. This is shown for the computer simulation as well as the practical system. Some more results include the response of the system to both a balanced and an unbalanced set of references in the three phases. The last results shown, illustrate the ability of the system to compensate a non-linear load.

▼ When mixing and mastering modern music, many engineers strive for making the end product to be perceived as loud as possible without sacrificing audio quality. Achieving this will often involve reducing the dynamic range of a track through peak limiting. By reducing the level of the loudest transients, the additional headroom can be used to raise the overall level of the track. This method of maximizing loudness through transient suppression has, arguably, made it more relevant to understand the human perception of transients. By further understanding the psychoacoustical factors that plays a role in how transient loudness is perceived, engineers could hopefully achieve greater audio quality while maximizing loudness, if desirable. This paper will focus on how the signal duration of a transient will affect its perceived loudness and potentially compensate for level changes within transients. The fact that sound signals of longer duration are perceived as louder than signals of shorter duration has been proven several times in prior research. This effect is tested again, in this research, by letting participants match the loudness of several short pink noise bursts of varying durations. The noise bursts are designed to mimic the envelope of a typical snare drum transient, which makes the stimuli differ from stimuli tested in prior experiments testing the same effect. Based on the result from this experiment, each transient is normalized to be perceived as equally loud. Then, a stationary component is added to every transient to make each stimuli mimic a full typical snare drum. In a second experiment, each stimuli is then compared against each other in an ABX test to see if listeners can perceive the differences. The results from the first experiment showed that transients were perceived to be approximately 0.3 dB louder per 5 ms increase in duration. In the second experiment, listeners failed to hear the differences between stimuli when transient duration differed less than 5 ms. For differences in duration longer than this, listeners correctly identified the differences.

▼ Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) has been used extensively for motor control, DC-AC
converters, DC-DC converters and in audio applications. The conventional method of
generating a pulse width modulated signal involves generating an accurate sawtooth or triangle
wave using analog circuits. In CMOS, being analog circuit intensive puts extra constraints
on the fabrication process used for manufacture, thus requiring a higher cost than
digital CMOS. Delta-Sigma Modulation on the other hand is analog intensive, but requires
only quality capacitor matching, which can be obtained with current digital CMOS processes.
This thesis describes a method to generate a digital PWM with pulse dithering
using a Delta-Sigma modulator. The Delta-Sigma modulator provides accuracy and allows
the circuit to be implemented in a digital CMOS process, while the pulse dithering in the
PWM spreads out harmonic noise generated from the PWM fundamental frequency.

▼ Changes in immune activity are widely reported in individuals with psychotic disorders. These findings, in conjunction with epidemiological data and recent research demonstrating the influence of the immune system in modulating brain activity and behavior, suggest that these alterations may be related to symptom development and exacerbation. Peripheral immune cells, particularly monocytes and macrophages, are proposed to contribute to increased levels of inflammation in psychosis. While activation of the JAK-STAT1 pathway by IFN-γ is understood to induce the myeloid cell proinflammatory phenotype, there a scarcity of data on this pathway and its relation to clinical measures in the psychosis literature. Measurement of a JAK-STAT1 transcriptional signature (IFNG, CXCL10, IRF1, STAT1 and TLR4) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from participants with psychosis (n=89) and non-psychiatric controls (n=44) revealed suppressed JAK-STAT1 activity earlier in illness and with increased illness acuity. This decrease did not appear to be related to antipsychotic treatment, and further analyses in participants treated with risperidone monotherapy as well as monocyte and macrophage cell culture experiments indicated a potentiating effect of risperidone on the JAK-STAT1 transcriptional signature, potentially contributing to the increase, or normalization, of the signature in participants with a longer illness
duration. To further characterize the monocyte phenotype in relation to illness
duration, monocytes were isolated from an independent sample of participants with psychosis (n=14) and controls (n=14) followed by RNA sequencing and gene set enrichment analysis. Participants with a shorter illness
duration once again had decreased enrichment of the IFN-γ mediated JAK-STAT1 signature (IFN-γ signature). Interestingly, there was a corresponding increased enrichment of transcriptional signatures related to anti-inflammatory and tissue remodeling phenotypes (including the IL-4 signature), but also of another canonical proinflammatory signature (LPS acute signature). Conversely, in participants with a longer illness
duration the was enrichment exclusively of interferon response genes (both IFN-γ and IFN-α signatures). These findings highlight the complexity of immune alterations in psychosis across the course of the illness, demonstrating the need to isolate specific cell types and consider illness context as research continues to uncover the role of circulating immune cells in mediating central nervous system function in health and disease.

▼ PURPOSE: Sleep is a fundamental element in maintaining human life. As society develops, adult sleeping time decreases, and periodontal disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 years of age. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sleeping time of adults and to investigate the relationship between adult sleeping time and periodontal disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a composite sample analysis using the weight, cluster, and stratification parameters of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from the 2013 to 2015 period. The chi-square test was performed by dividing variables into demographic characteristics, health behaviors, and oral care behaviors. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between sleep time and periodontal disease. ). In this case, step-by-step analysis was carried out. In Model 1, gender and age were corrected. In Model 2, sociodemographic characteristics and health behavior were corrected. In Model 3, demographic characteristics, health behavior, And compared with the daily sleep time from '6 hours to 8 hours' considering the 7-hour recommended daily sleep time of adults reported by American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and Sleep Research Society. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription program, with a statistical significance level (p) of 0.05.
RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed that the prevalence of periodontal diseases was higher in women than in men, with decreasing age, higher incomes, and higher educational level. The prevalence of periodontal disease was higher than that of married ones. The prevalence of periodontal disease increased during smoking. The prevalence of periodontal disease was the lowest in 8 hours to 10 hours of working day, the recommended daily hours. Blood pressure, blood glucose, blood pressure, weight, and the use of secondary oral hygiene products showed a lower prevalence of periodontal disease. The prevalence of periodontal disease was found to be low in the group with the recommended sleeping time, and OR = 1.099 (p = 0.192) at the time of less than 5 hours in Model 1 from 6 hours to 8 hours in the sleeping time, OR = OR = 1.009 (p = 0.900), OR = 1.347 (p = 0.014) for more than 9 hours and less than 5 hours for OR = 1.014 (p = 0.854) ) And OR = 1.331 (p = 0.018) for more than 9 hours.
CONCLUSIONS: When the statistically significant sleep time was greater than the recommended time, sleep disturbances such as sleep apnea and hypersomnia were frequent, and psychological characteristics were often depressed or unstable. In the case of depression or anxiety, it is difficult to maintain and improve the whole body health when cognitive function is deteriorated, and it is thought that it is difficult to maintain or promote oral health. In this sense, taking adequate sleep time is thought to contribute to oral health.
