▼ Drivers continuously adapt to the different needs and constraints in the driving scene. Literature has provided evidence for two adaptation strategies in response to an increased risk (decreasing the road width or increasing the driving speed) while lane keeping: decreasing driving speed and increasing endpoint arm stiffness. However, so far these studies did not investigate the interaction between the two adaptation strategies. The aim of this study is to find the interaction between drivers’ speed and neuromuscular adaptation for different risk durations. We hypothesize that the speed reduction is larger when the narrow road is longer which allows for a lesser increase in arm stiffness. Additionally, when the narrow road is shorter the increase in neuromuscular stiffness is larger and allows for a higher speed. Twenty-six participants drove in a driving simulator experiment in a 1.8m wide car on a 35 km long road. Different levels of risk durations were imposed to the drivers on straight road sections by a road narrowing (from 3.6m to 2.2m) with a varying length (10m, 100m, 250m, and 500m). During the experiment speed reduction was measured and neuromuscular adaptation was quantified by measuring the grip force. Additionally participants subjectively rated their experienced effort from 1-10. The results show that participants adapted to the road narrowing both by speed reduction as well as increased grip force, without significant impact of the length of the road narrowing. Only on the 10m narrow the speed reduction and increase in grip force was smaller compared to the other three cases. Interestingly, although drivers increased their subjective effort, no differences in speed and grip force adaptation were found between the three longest narrow roads. These results suggest that for narrow road lengths up to 500m drivers adapt their driving style to road width rather than road length. Future studies should identify if the identified speed and grip force adaptations also hold for longer and different durations of risk. ▼ The judicious use of energy by industries is a key lever for ensuring a sustainable industrial development. The cost effective application of energy management and energy efficiency measures offers industries with an effective means of gaining both economic and social dividend, also reducing the negative environmental effects of energy use. Unfortunately, industries in developing countries are lagging behind in the adoption of energy efficiency and management measures; as such missing the benefits of implementation. This study is aims at enhance the knowledge of industrial energy efficiency and management strategies in Ghana, by investigating the present level of energy (and efficiency) management practices in Ghana largest industrial park (i.e. Tema industrial area). The study also incorporates the investigation of also investigation of barriers to and driving forces for the implementation of energy efficiency measure; to shed light on the rationale for both the adoption and non-adoption of cost effective industrial energy efficient technologies in Ghana. This study was carried out using a semi-structure interview due to the explorative nature of the study. The interviews were conducted in sessions, in the first session respondents were asked describe the energy management strategies in used in the respective companies. In the second session, respondents were asked to fill a structured questionnaire covering the various aspects of the study. The results reveal that energy is poorly managed in the industrial area and there is an energy efficiency gap resulting from the low implementation energy efficiency measures. In addition the reveals that the important barriers impeding the implementation of cost effective energy efficiency technologies or measures in the surveyed firms principally stems from rational behavior economic barriers, which are deeply linked to the lack of government frameworks for industrial energy efficiency. The study also finds that economic gains related to ‘cost reductions resulting from lowered energy use’ and ‘threats of rising energy prices’ are the most important drivers for implementing energy efficiency measures or technologies.

Development of adaptive haptic shared control system requires understanding of the adaptive nature of the driver’s neuromuscular system. In this study, linear parameter varying modeling techniques are proposed to identify changes in the admittance of the driver’s arm. The admittance describes the relation between the torque applied to the steering wheel and steering wheel angle output. By conducting two experiments it is investigated whether grip force applied to the steering wheel serves as an appropriate scheduling variable for a LPV model. In our approach, first tracking tasks with torque perturba- tions applied to the steering wheel are performed with varying boundary widths to evoke changes in admittance. The relation between grip force and admittance is investigated by estimating neuromuscular stiffness and damping parameters and measuring the force applied to the steering wheel using pressure gloves. An LPV model is identified by linear interpolation between LTI models identified for each condition. Second, a driving task is performed in a fixed-base driving simulator to analyze the variance in grip force and changes in admittance between wide and narrow roads. The results of the driving task are used to assess the validity of the LPV model during driving tasks. It was found that the stiffness and damping parameters varied proportionally with the grip force. Although small variations in grip force levels are found between subjects, it is concluded that grip force is an appropriate scheduling variable for an LPV model. The relation between grip force and admittance was similar during driving tasks compared to the tracking tasks. The derived LPV model accurately describes the changes in the neuromuscular system over the range of grip force variations observed during the driving task. For further validation of the LPV model in the time-domain it is recommended to use time- varying boundary tasks.

Un polycristal est constitué par un agglomérat de monocristaux micrométriques accolés les uns aux autres. L’interface entre deux monocristaux tournés constitue un joint de grains (JdG). Les JdGs jouent un rôle important dans le comportement plastique des matériaux cristallins. Sous certaines conditions de traitement thermique (TT) ou de thermomécanique (TM), les JdGs peuvent migrer et font évoluer profondément les microstructures. Ces phénomènes anciens restent toutefois mal connus et il n’existe pas de modèle quantitatif décrivant la migration. Dans ce contexte, nous avons étudié expérimentalement la migration des JdGs dans deux nuances de cuivre électrolytique de même pureté. L’un livré sous la forme d’une tôle obtenue par le laminage à froid suivi d’un recuit continu à 700°C (que l’on nommera cuivre I), est recristallisé. L’autre, fourni sous forme de cylindre (cuivre II) est partiellement recristallisé. Un traitement thermique initial permet d’obtenir un état de référence puis différents TT et TM sont effectués afin d’étudier la migration des joints.Nous recherchons les conditions de l’écrouissage critique (croissance de grains lors de recuit sans germination après très faible déformation plastique) afin d’observer la migration induite par déformation (Strain Induced Boundary Migration SIBM). Le déplacement de JdG par ce mécanisme a été observé in-situ sous le MEB. Une technique de mesure combinée EBSD et AFM est utilisé pour suivre de manière quantitative les évolutions microstructurales et évaluer les différentes forces motrices en présence. Le déplacement des JdGs est quantifié précisément grâce aux phénomènes de gravure thermique et l’existence de points fixes dans les clichées EBSD. L’énergie stockée, associée aux microstructures de dislocations dans chaque grain a été estimée par deux méthodes, la mesure de la désorientation locale à l’aide de cartographie de KAM et la simulation par modèle de Taylor relâché incluant un modèle de plasticité cristalline justifié physiquement et incluant une restauration isotrope ou anisotrope. La courbure des JdGs, 2nde force motrice en présence, est évaluée à partir des contours des JdGs expérimentaux. Un diagramme de migration a été tracé en fonction des déplacements de JdGs liant à l’énergie de courbure de JdG et à la différence d’énergie stockée. Il ressort des différences significative avec le comportement du polycristal d’Al, notamment liées à la différence d’énergie de faute d’empilement et l’existence de nombreuse macles. Le joint triple semble fortement influer le déplacement des JdGs qui a été étudié statistiquement pour le cuivre I à l’aide de donnée EBSD.

La phénoménologie, portant à l’expression une intuition eidétique de la spécificité de l’expérience musicale nourrie de la pratique quotidienne de l’instrument et de la fréquentation des œuvres du répertoire classique, doit pouvoir exercer, dans le dialogue avec les neurosciences, une double fonction : critique et positive. D’une part, elle est un révélateur des erreurs de catégorie des récents programmes de réduction de la musique, tantôt aux émotions de base, tantôt à la structure dynamique de la perception du temps, tantôt à un langage de communication non verbale. D’autre part, elle nous a servi à réorienter la recherche vers les conditions neurophysiologiques de l’immersion dans l’univers spirituel de Brahms (et des autres compositeurs) par projection intropathique d’une auto-affection kinesthésique, mettant l’écoute mélomane en résonance avec les tensions et relaxations musculaires du corps musicien accomplissant les gestes producteurs du «son musical». L’auteure, pianiste et chef d’orchestre, retirant l’enseignement philosophique de sa participation à l’équipe de neurophysiologistes du professeur Fadiga de l’Université de Ferrare, dont les travaux ont abouti à la publication d’un critère quantitatif de la «driving force» du chef d’orchestre applicable au jugement esthétique, pose les fondements d’une nouvelle eidétique kinesthésique de l’incarnation, l’empathie, l’intersubjectivité et la noématique musicale. L’anticipation, propriété fondamentale du vivant pour le physiologiste, la protention, structure de distensio animi de la conscience du temps pour le philosophe, sont à la base d’un principe technique intuitivement connu des grands chefs d’orchestre.

By giving expression to an eidetic intuition of the specificity of musical experience enriched by the daily practice of the instrument and familiarity with works from the classical repertoire, phenomenology, in its dialogue with the neurosciences, has to be able to fulfill a double function: both critical and positive. On the one hand, it brings to light the category mistakes inherent in recent programs seeking to reduce music either to basic emotions or else to the dynamic structure of the perception of time or again, to a non-verbal language of communication. On the other hand, it has made it possible for us to reorient ongoing research in the direction of an investigation of the neurophysiological conditions underlying the immersion into the spiritual universe of Brahms (and other composers), and this by way of an intropathic projection of a kinaesthetic auto-affection, establishing a resonance between the music-lovers auditive appreciation and the muscular tensions and relaxations of the musician body accomplishing the gestures productive of his ‘musical sound’. Uma vez chegado o momento de elaborar uma tese para a conclusão do segundo ciclo de estudos em Engenharia Química, a escolha dentro das opções disponíveis, foi por um lado o contexto laboral, onde me insiro, como trabalhador estudante e por outro lado um tema relacionado com água. Surge então, como oportunidade de trabalho a avaliação do desempenho de uma Torre de Arrefecimento. Os objectivos foram definidos, após formação da equipa de suporte e concepção, no local onde se desenvolveu o trabalho. A motivação base deste trabalho foi responder às seguintes perguntas: Terá a Torre de Arrefecimento capacidade para remover toda a carga térmica, à máxima capacidade, na época de Verão? Em caso negativo, que medidas poderão ser tomadas? Inicialmente inventariaram-se os aspectos relevantes e formularam-se as hipóteses no sentido de responder às questões levantadas. Considerou-se a necessidade de avaliar a torre de arrefecimento e toda a rede de permuta de calor do sistema, face ao aumento de carga do caudal térmico devido à expansão da fábrica. A variável mais importante da torre de arrefecimento (TA), temperatura de termómetro húmido, foi redefinida com recurso aos melhores dados disponíveis, aplicando-se a análise clássica recomendada (Cheremisinoff et al., 1989). O valor atribuído para a temperatura de termómetro húmido foi de 22 ºC. A exploração e estratégia para alcançar os objectivos passaram por medições tão rigorosas quanto possível, pela análise da literatura especializada, bem como da utilização do simulador Aspen Plus e da folha de cálculo Excel. Os modelos teóricos foram verificados com as ferramentas computacionais, confrontados com a realidade e suportados pela experiência de recursos humanos tanto internos como externos. A metodologia seguida passou pelo doseamento teórico/prático, orientado para os resultados. Dada a diversidade das fontes de informação e variedade de ferramentas optou-se por apresentar as unidades em Sistema Internacional (SI) e Inch Pound Second (IPS). Fez-se toda a verificação dos cálculos de projecto, construíram-se as curvas de desempenho, determinou-se a capacidade e eficiência da TA, avaliaram-se os requisitos hidráulicos, bem como imposições operatórias como a necessidade da água de arrefecimento deixar a torre a 26ºC. A resposta às perguntas inicialmente formuladas indica que a TA actual não tem capacidade para remover toda a carga térmica (35 MW) quando a fábrica opera à máxima capacidade e quando a temperatura de bolbo húmido sobe para valores iguais ou superiores a 22ºC. Assim, não e possível manter a temperatura da agua de fornecimento a 26 °C sem reduzir a produção. ▼ The development of Al-based metallic glasses capable of easily generating an amorphous structure on cooling from the melt is recognized as one of the major challenges in this field of research. In the past, the Al-based amorphous alloys could be categorized into four types: (1) Al-LTM-RE; (2) Al- LTM- ETM; (3) Al-LTMAEM and (4) Al-TM-Metalloid. Recent findings in Al-rich Al-Ni-Co-La-Y alloys, where a critical casting diameter of ~ 1mm has been reported, has rekindled interest in the possibility of producing Al-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). The research outlined in this thesis is focused on the design of Al-Si-based metallic glasses without rare earth elemental additions but having good glass-forming ability (GFA). Based on the underlying thermodynamic and kinetic factors that dictate the retention of a glassy structure in an alloy melt upon cooling, three fundamental concepts were simultaneously adopted in order to identify alloy compositions with the highest propensity for glass-formation in a range of Al-Si-based alloy systems. These incorporate the heat of mixing between alloying elements, the thermodynamic driving force for crystallization within an alloy system and the efficient packing of atoms for maximizing alloy melt viscosity, thereby slow down the kinetics of crystallisation. With this in mind, transition metals Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni, were selected as viable additions to the binary Al-Si alloy system. Compositions that satisfy these criteria were produced by arc-melting and vacuum casting into wedge-shaped copper moulds in order to examine their GFA. The microstructure and morphology of the as-cast alloys were investigated mainly using electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction techniques. Results showed that glass formation is possible within the systems studied, with alloys in the Al-Ni-Si and Al-Co-Si systems forming glasses with a critical casting size of up to 400 um and 195 um, respectively. The GFA of the alloy systems studied in the thesis were found to follow the sequence: Al-Ni-Si > Al-Co-Si > Al-Cr-Si > Al-Mo-Si > Al-Mn-Si > Al-Fe-Si. The results indicate that the nature of the electronic bonding between Al and the transition metal elements strongly affects GFA of a given alloy system and that atomic packing efficiency also contributes to maximizing glass formation. The optimized compositions in the Al-Ni-Si alloys contained three types of efficiently packed clusters, which suggested a self-consistence principle that the compositions with all elements efficiently packed by their first-shell atoms are crystallization resistant and more likely to form a glass. Wider featureless regions were observed in the Al-rich lower liquidus temperature regions, indicating a lower crystallization driving force, which is a positive factor in potential glass formation. By carefully design and synthesis, the GFA in the Al-Si based alloys was explored, providing an insight towards the development of Al-based alloys free of rare-earth elements. ▼ It is generally accepted that the fatigue crack growth depends on the stress intensity factor range (ΔK) and the maximum stress intensity factor (K_max). Numerous driving forces were introduced to analyze fatigue crack growth for a wide range of stress ratios. However, it appears that the effect of the crack tip stresses and strains need to be included into the fatigue crack growth analysis as well. Such an approach can be successful as long as the stress intensity factors are correlated with the actual elastic-plastic crack tip stress-strain field. Unfortunately, the correlation between the stress intensity factors and the crack tip stress-strain field is often altered by residual stresses induced by reversed plastic deformations. A two-parameter model (ΔK_tot, K_max,tot) based on the elastic-plastic crack tip stress-strain history has been proposed. The applied stress intensity factors (ΔK_appl, K_max,appl) were modified and converted into the total stress intensity factors (ΔK_tot, K_max,tot) in order to account for the effect of local crack tip stresses and strains on the fatigue crack growth. The fatigue crack growth was regarded as a process of successive crack re-initiations in the crack tip region and predicted by simulating the stress-strain response in the material volume adjacent to the crack tip and estimating the accumulated fatigue damage. The model was developed to predict the mean stress effect for steady-state fatigue crack growth and to determine the fatigue crack growth under simple variable amplitude loading histories. Moreover, the influence of the applied compressive stress on fatigue crack growth can be explained with the proposed two-parameter model. A two-parameter driving force in the form of: Δκ = K_max,tot^p ΔK_tot^(1-p) was derived based on the local stresses and strains at the crack tip using the Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) fatigue damage parameter: D = σ_maxΔε/2. The parameter p is a function of material cyclic stress-strain properties and varies from 0 to 0.5 depending on the fatigue crack growth rate. The effects of the internal (residual) stress induced by the reversed cyclic plasticity manifested themselves in the change of the resultant (total) stress intensity factors driving the crack. Experimental fatigue crack growth data sets for two aluminum alloys (7075-T6 and 2024-T351), two steel alloys (4340 and 4140), and one titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) were used for the verification of the model under constant amplitude loading. This model was also capable of predicting variable-amplitude fatigue crack growth. Experimental fatigue crack growth data sets after single overloads for the aluminum alloy 7075-T6, steel alloy 4140, and titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V were also used for the verification of the model. The results indicate that the driving force Δκ can successfully predict the stress ratio R effect and also the load-interaction effect on fatigue crack growth.

Desta forma, têm surgido vários empreendimentos com o conceito de empreendimentos sustentáveis, sem haver uma metodologia clara quanto à avaliação desta sustentabilidade. Neste sentido colocam-se em causa algumas questões: será que estes empreendimentos são sustentáveis? E se são, como medir essa sustentabilidade? E por último, como podem ser avaliados? Um bom exemplo, desta questão, têm sido os vários projectos aprovado recentemente, muitos destes abrigados pelo sistema PIN, que têm suscitado inúmeras questões quanto seu impacte ambiental. Destes projectos aprovados, 29 projectos afectam áreas classificadas com estatuto de protecção ambiental, gerando várias incertezas por parte da sociedade civil. Diante desta problemática, é proposto neste trabalho o Índice Global de Sustentabilidade Ambiental, apoiado no modelo Força Motriz – Pressão – Estado – Impacto – Resposta, que poderá ser uma ferramenta de grande valia no apoio ao licenciamento de empreendimentos imobiliários. Este indicador tem como objectivo avaliar globalmente desempenho ambiental do empreendimento, a ser licenciado, em termos das medidas e das políticas ambientais.

▼ Building Information Modeling, abbreviated BIM, is a process of information sharing which enhances communication and which helps in visualizing complex problems in the building industry. BIM has not been used in a larger extent in the production phase of civil works. The purpose of the study is therefore to investigate driving forces behind the use of BIM and the resistors against it and to investigate in what ways BIM could be used in the production phase. The theoretical framework is based on one licentiate thesis, two degree projects, three research papers and three books. A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews was used. The interviews were made with a calculator, a supervisor and a CAD planner from Skanska, a constructor and project manager from ELU, a Project Information Officer from Tyréns and a VDC coordinator and VDC business developer from Veidekke who all have been working with BIM. This was to get a good representation from different actors and people with different professional roles. The study shows that the driving forces behind a use of BIM are that it enhances collaboration and communication between the actors, it makes it easier to visualize the project and the scope, and it provides a higher degree of accuracy of coordination’s. BIM also makes the work more effective and results in fewer errors. Above all, BIM give a possibility for a shorter production phase, shorter total project duration and a lower total cost. The study also shows that the resistors against the use of BIM are employee’s negative attitude against administrative work, that it is hard to measure profitability of using BIM, the uncertainty of who has the legal ownership of the data, and who has the responsibility of the accuracy of it. 3 That the implementation cost and the design phase are more expensive is also a resistor against a use of BIM. BIM could be used in visualization with 3D models in collision controls and co-reviews in meetings, work preparations and at site. A workplace outline could also be printed from the 3D model to be placed on the site for visualization. 4D scheduling and 4D animations could be used for visualization in meetings, work preparations and at site. The study showed that quantity takeoff and cost estimation with 5D is only reconciled in the meetings in the production phase and that the programs for it are not needed in this phase. RFID tags could be used at site for logistics and tracking materials, and field verifications could be used to verify that a work task is executed according to exact coordination’s in the 3D model. Furthermore tablet computers could be used for bringing the technique of BIM to the site which enables a better understanding of complex work tasks for the workers. A BIM coordinator who understands the process of working with BIM and who could work as a bridge between the users and the technical development team is important in a successful implementation. Syftet med denna undersökning har varit att kartlägga vad som driver människor att söka sig till eller anta mellanchefspositioner. En kvalitativ intervjustudie har genomförts utifrån en induktiv ansats då intresseområdet tidigare har varit obeforskat och ambitionen har varit att undersöka det unika inom detta. Tio intervjuer har utförts i vilka samtliga respondenter, vid undersökningstillfället, har befunnit sig på mellanchefspositioner inom antingen privat- eller offentlig sektor. Data har transkriberats och senare analyserats utifrån en induktiv tematisk analys vilken har resulterat i fyra övergripande teman för vad som driver människor att söka sig till eller anta mellanchefspositioner. Dessa teman benämns som: Utvecklingen – en strävan efter utveckling på det personliga planet, Makten – att ha makt och därigenom kunna påverka såväl organisationen som sin egen arbetssituation, Att klättra i karriären – mellanchefspositionen som en fas i karriären på väg uppåt i karriärvärlden, Bekräftelsen – en önskan om att bli omtyckt, att få bekräftelse från folk i sin omgivning för att man har lyckats åstadkomma något. Resultatet har jämförts mot befintliga psykologiska teorier och slutsats har dragits i form av att ovanstående teman beskriver vad som driver människor att söka sig till eller anta mellanchefspositioner. Avslutningsvis har förslag till vidare forskning presenterats för att exemplifiera hur man vidare kan kartlägga det som här har undersökts.

The purpose of this research has been to map out what drives people to strive towards or accept middle management positions. A qualitative interview study has been conducted with an inductive approach since the area of interest until now had not been researched and that the ambition has been to examine the unique within this. Ten interviews were carried out in which all of the respondents, at the time of the study, were working as middle position managers within either the private or public sector. The data has been transcribed and then analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis which resulted in four overall themes answering what drives people to strive towards or accept middle management positions. These themes are denominated as following: The Development – a strive towards a development on a personal level, The Power – to have power and through it the possibility to influence as well the organization as the own work situation, Career advancement – the mid-level management position is seen as but a step in the career advancement, The Confirmation – a wish to be liked, to be confirmed by those in your surroundings for having accomplished something. The results have been compared with existing psychological theories and a conclusion has been made that the above themes describe what drives people to strive towards or accept middle management positions. To conclude, suggestions about future research have been presented to exemplify how to further map out what has been researched here.

▼ The objective of this research based on both the theory and experimentation was to prove that the total pressure difference is the primary driving force during the vacuum drying. The theoretical drying rates of diffusion, free water bulk flow and water vapor bulk flow were calculated and compared. The concept of equilibrium moisture content under the vacuum was developed. The theoretical maximum moisture content drop in one cycle was calculated using energy balance. The model was developed for the vacuum drying to understand the mechanism of the vacuum drying including the boiling front and its movement. To evaluate the effect of the sample size on the drying rate, four different thicknesses (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 inches) and three different lengths (5, 10, 15 inches) were used. In the cyclic drying, the specimens were heated to the 60 C. The vacuum was pulled to about 18 mm Hg. The vacuum pump was kept running for 140 minutes. It was found that in cyclic vacuum drying, drying rate was not affected by the thickness. However, it was affected by the length. The cyclic drying curve consisted of two distinct parts. The fast drying period lasted about 10 to 20 minutes. The slow drying period occurred next when the pressure inside wood got close to the ambient pressure. In end grain vacuum drying, the specimens were coated with wax, wrapped in the plastic film and inserted into a rubber tube to prevent the moisture loss from the side surfaces during drying. The specimen size was 1×1×10 inches. Red oak and white oak were sealed and dried in both cyclic and continuous vacuum drying. The results showed that sealed specimens dried almost as fast as unsealed specimen. There was little moisture loss from the side surfaces. There was a moisture gradient along the length in both cyclic drying and continuous vacuum drying. Red oak specimens of 2.5×1.5×10 inches were used to study the boiling front in the vacuum drying. In order to detect the boiling phenomenon, the saturation pressures were calculated and were compared with the pressures at the same time and the same location. Boiling occurred during drying and the boiling front retreated to the center of wood as drying proceeded. The retreating speed depended on the heat supply and the permeability. Vacuum drying at room temperature was investigated. The specimens were dried at 20 C and pressure near 18 mm Hg. The results showed that wood can be vacuum dried at room temperature with little or no degrade at a reasonable drying rate. All experimental results support the objective of this study that the primary driving force is the total pressure difference. Advisors/Committee Members: Lamb, Fred M. Dans le contexte de l’industrie nucléaire, la présence éventuelle d’imperfections surfaciques pouvant être générées par des chutes ou frottements d’outils lors de la fabrication et la maintenance des composants se doit d’être justifiée vis-à-vis du phénomène de fatigue. L’objectif premier de cette étude est d’évaluer dans quelle mesure la présence d’imperfections de surface de l’ordre de quelques dixièmes de millimètre de profondeur peut impacter la durée de vie en fatigue oligocyclique. En parallèle, cette étude cherche à décrire, de manière qualitative et quantitative, l’amorçage et la propagation des fissures à partir de ces imperfections. Afin de répondre à ces objectifs, une campagne d’essais de fatigue uni-axiale, menée en contrôle de déformation totale imposée, a été mise en œuvre avec des éprouvettes cylindriques (Φ 9 mm). Les imperfections de surface ont été introduites artificiellement sur les éprouvettes à l’aide de deux dispositifs permettant l’usinage d’entailles de faibles dimensions. Afin de suivre les phases d’amorçage, de micro et de macro propagation des fissures à partir des imperfections de surface, la méthode du suivi de potentiel électrique a été principalement employée. Des actions expérimentales et numériques complémentaires ont été réalisées afin de calibrer le suivi de potentiel. Les résultats de la campagne d’essais réalisée mettent en évidence une influence significative de la présence d’imperfections sur la tenue en fatigue des éprouvettes étudiées. La mise en œuvre du suivi de potentiel électrique a permis de déterminer les cinétiques d’amorçage et de propagation à partir des entailles artificiellement introduites. L’identification d’un paramètre représentatif de la force motrice de propagation dans le contexte de plasticité généralisée associé aux essais réalisés a par ailleurs permis d’exploiter les données relatives aux cinétiques de propagation dans une optique prédictive.

Given the stringent requirements of high levels of safety in nuclear components, stakeholders of the French nuclear industry must anticipate the presence of residual surface imperfections in these components. Such imperfections could be introduced during manufacturing or maintenance operations. The incidence of surface irregularities on the fatigue strength of metallic components has tobe considered. Meanwhile, nuclear components can be loaded under low-cycle fatigue and large-scale plasticity conditions. The first objective of this work isthento assess to what extent the fatigue life of typical nuclear materials may be affected by the presence of such surface irregularities. La présente thèse a pour objectif de caractériser l’effet mémoire de forme du mélange (40%PCL/ 60%SBS) et d’étudier l’influence de l’altération de la masse molaire et des propriétés physico-chimiques sur cet EMF. Dans un premier temps, une caractérisation expérimentale a été effectuée afin de déterminer les propriétés physico-chimiques, morphologiques et mécaniques des matériaux d’études. Le mélange (PCL/SBS) présente un EMF total (EMFT) puisqu’il récupère 100% de sa forme initiale après un cycle de mémoire de forme. L’énergie emmagasinée dans la structure agit en tant que la force motrice qui pourrait être responsable de cet EMF. Donc, une méthode originale utilisant un témoin a été proposée afin d’évaluer l’évolution de la contrainte-déformation durant la recouvrance. Dans une deuxième étape, afin de changer la masse molaire du PCL dans le mélange (SBS/PCL), le vieillissement par hydrolyse enzymatique en utilisant une enzyme de type Amano Lipase de Pseudomonas fluorescens a été réalisé. L’effet du vieillissement sur les propriétés du PCL pur a été tout d’abord évalué. Ensuite, l’échantillonnage a été effectué et des mélanges (PCL/SBS) à différentes masses molaires du PCL ont été donc obtenus. Ces mélanges ont été soumis par la suite à des essais de caractérisation et à des essais de mémoire de forme afin d’étudier la relation entre la masse molaire et l’EMF. Les résultats ont montré que la diminution de la masse molaire engendre des changements morphologiques et structuraux, l’augmentation de la rigidité et la fragilisation du mélange, la diminution de la compatibilité, l’augmentation de l’hétérogénéité et la perte de l’équilibre thermodynamique des phases. Ces changements de la masse molaire et donc des propriétés du mélange ont altéré sa capacité de recouvrance. Le mélange initialement à EMFT (Rr =100%) devient à EMF partiel EMFP (Rr=50%). Dans une dernière étape, un modèle biparabolique a été employé pour la prédiction du comportement viscoélastique du mélange (40%PCL/60%SBS) avant et après son vieillissement par hydrolyse enzymatique.

The aim of this thesis is to characterize the Shape Memory Effect (SME) of the (40% PCL/60% SBS) blend and to study the influence of the molecular weight and the physicochemical properties on this SME. Firstly, experimental characterization is performed in order to evaluate the physicochemical, morphological and mechanical properties of the used materials. The (PCL/SBS) blend exhibits a Total SME (TSME) as it recovers 100% of its original shape after one shape memory cycle. The energy stored in the structure acts as the driving force that can be responsible for this SME. Therefore, an original method using a witness is used to establish the stress-strain evolution during recovery. Secondly, to change the molecular weight of PCL in the blend, enzymatic hydrolytic degradation using an Amano Lipase from Pseudomonas fluorescens is carried out. ▼ San Antonio in Bexar County is the seventh largest‐populated city in the United States, and resides centrally in the state of Texas (United States Census 2010). Texas ranks first in total roadway miles by ownership, with over 300,000 roadway miles built for public use (United States Census 2012). With such a vast roadway infrastructure comes many critical problems including wrong‐way driving (WWD), the focus of this study. ❧ An Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri) ArcGIS geoprocessing task, Closest Facility, utilizing Network Analyst 10.1 extension has been customized to create a Wrong‐Way Driving Transportation Model (WWD Model) (Esri 2013). This model directly addresses several key challenges faced by the San Antonio Wrong Way Driver Task Force (herein referred to as Task Force). Using geographic information systems (GIS) this model performs a route analysis that models the travel paths of such crash incidents from their likely point of origin—alcohol‐serving facilities as determined by the Task Force (San Antonio Wrong Way Driver Task Force 2012). The WWD Model methodology is structured such that a specified Network Dataset—in this case, roadways provided by Bexar County Metro 911—is analyzed to route WWD crash incidents from the nearest suspected facilities of origin. The customized geoprocessing toolkit then utilizes the resulting polyline dataset output to estimate the route taken by drivers based on the validated spatial relationship of reported crash incidents to reported WWD events as recorded in real‐time by TransGuide Operators. A data validation of the resulting routes yield a 77 percent match to the total TransGuide reported events, concluding that the WWD Model can be used to map wrong‐way travel behavior with 77 percent accuracy given the parameters specified throughout this paper (Maldonado 2013). Low angle grain boundary (LAGB) mobility is an essential parameter for developing the analytical models that describe the kinetics of recovery and predict the nucleation of recrystallized grains. The thesis is aimed at the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations study of LAGB mobility determination in pure Al and Al-Mg alloys. All the previous experimental studies reported that the presence of several defects, such as solutes and dislocations, retard the boundary motion and provide lower mobility. However, very few studies have been conducted in MD simulation to capture the interactions of those defects with the migrating grain boundary. This thesis is focused on providing complete understanding of LAGB determination along with a comprehensive explanation of solute and dislocation retarding effects on boundary motion. The LAGB mobility in pure Al was computed from two different MD techniques as a function of temperature and misorientation. Within numerical uncertainties, both techniques provide the same magnitude of mobility at 300K for 7.785^o boundary and at 700K for 23.07^o boundary. It was observed that ADF method is not applicable to determine LAGB mobility at high temperature due to failure of order parameter computation. The MD derived activation energy is found to be approximately ten times lower than the experimental observations. A strong solute pinning effect on boundary motion was observed at all misorientations and solute concentrations studied in Al-Mg alloys. An approximate linear relationship is found between the restraining force and the solute concentration in a distributed solute approach. In addition, the extrinsic dislocations are found to completely pin both 7.785^o and 23.07^o boundary motion at low driving forces in pure Al at 300K. The MD results do not reveal significant qualitative differences of the pinned boundary structure for the low and high angle boundaries and will be discussed in terms of the previous experimental observations.

Strategy is concept which differentiates between success and failure of a manager. That’s why a substantial volume of management literature has been devoted to strategy formulation. There are different approaches in strategy which each one works well in a certain context. Strategic planning as an approach to strategy making is applicable in organizations in which production process has low degree of complexity and environment is fairly stable. Cement companies in Iran experience such a context, so strategic planning can be a valuable tool for identifying strategies in cement industry. This study aims to identify a basic strategic planning model so that it takes into consideration the characteristics of Iran’s cement industry. Driving forces, value chain, key success factors, and generic strategies: are the main elements which have been customized according to industry’s features. The needed information for this purpose has mainly been gathered through document review and experts interview. The findings of the study show that in near future cement companies will face big changes and they have to meet the requirements of new competition environment. Economy liberation, elimination of government subsidies and supports, and a growing demand due to renovation of neighbor countries: are the main driving forces which shape the future of industry. Primary activities of value chain have been identified to assess a company against its competitors. It has been identified that Iranian cement companies generally have serious problems in their marketing because government’s interventions have prevented creation of real competition in this industry. Energy productivity, management skills, capacity utilization, being close to market, and investment on cement downstream products are the KSFs major issues which companies should pay close attention. Cost leadership seems to be the most effective generic strategy in this industry.
