Nesta dissertação aborda-se a aplicação de Leis de Potência (LPs), também designadas de Leis de Pareto ou Leis de Zipf, a dados económicos. As LPs são distribuições estatísticas amplamente usadas na compreensão de sistemas naturais e artificiais. O aparecimento das LPs deve-se a Vilfredo Pareto que, no século XIX, publicou o manual de economia política,“Cours d’Economie Politique”. Nesse manual refere que grande parte da economia mundial segue uma LP, em que 20% da população reúne 80% da riqueza do país. Esta propriedade carateriza uma variável que segue uma distribuição de Pareto (ou LP). Desde então, as LPs foram aplicadas a outros fenómenos, nomeadamente a ocorrência de palavras em textos, os sobrenomes das pessoas, a variação dos rendimentos pessoais ou de empresas, o número de vítimas de inundações ou tremores de terra, os acessos a sítios da internet, etc. Neste trabalho, é estudado um conjunto de dados relativos às fortunas particulares ou coletivas de pessoas ou organizações. Mais concretamente são analisados dados recolhidos sobre as fortunas das mulheres mais ricas do mundo, dos homens mais ricos no ramo da tecnologia, das famílias mais ricas, das 20 mulheres mais ricas da América, dos 400 homens mais ricos da América, dos homens mais ricos do mundo, dos estabelecimentos mais ricos do mundo, das empresas mais ricas do mundo e dos países mais ricos do mundo, bem como o valor de algumas empresas no mercado de ações. Os resultados obtidos revelam uma boa aproximação de parte desses dados a uma LP simples e uma boa aproximação pelos restantes dados a uma LP dupla. Observa-se, assim, diferenciação na forma de crescimento das fortunas nos diferentes casos estudados. Como trabalho futuro, procurar-se-á analisar estes e outros dados, utilizando outras distribuições estatísticas, como a exponencial ou a lognormal, que possuem comportamentos semelhantes à LP, com o intuito de serem comparados os resultados. Um outro aspeto interessante será o de encontrar a explicação analítica para as vantagens da aproximação de dados económicos por uma LP simples vs por uma LP dupla.

In this study we consider Power Laws (PLs), also known as Pareto Laws or Zipf Laws. PLs are statistical distributions. Vilfredo Pareto, in the XIX century, was a pioneer in the study of PLs. He states, in his manual of political economy, "Cours d'Economie Politique", that a large part of the world economy follows a particular distribution, in which 20% of the population gathers 80% of the total wealth, and so, a small fraction of the society controls the largest share of the money. This summarizes the behavior of a variable that follows a Pareto distribution (or, PL). Until now, several researchers applied PLs to other natural and human-made phenomena, such as the occurrence of words in texts, person’s surnames, the variation in personal incomes or businesses, the number of casualties in floods and earthquakes, on the internet, amongst others. 2. Ndive, Sammy F.W. W-reactivation (Inducible "SOS" DNA Repair) of double stranded DNA bacteriophage λ and single stranded DNA bacteriophage fd on isogenic rec and uvrB mutants of Escherichia coli K-12.

The recA mutant has been shown to be completely recombination deficient and highly UV-sensitive. Also, this mutant is remarkably deficient in inducible "SOS" DNA repair and, consequently it is not UV-mutable and it cannot perform W-reactivation, an inducible non-excision repair dependent enhancement of phage recovery. The <em>recB-recF-</em> double mutant like the recA mutant, is recombination deficient and UV-sensitive. As observed, each of these mutations appear to block an independent pathway of genetic recombination. We are interested in determining how closely the <em>recB-recF- </em>double mutant resembles the recA mutant. In this perspective we looked at the W-reactivation of double stranded bacteriophage λ and single stranded bacteriophage fd. On examining the W-reactivation for phage λ, it is seen that the <em>recB-</em> and <em>recF-</em> mutants separately lead to a reduction of UV-reactivation efficiency but when spliced, the <em>recB-recF-</em> double mutant further leads to a reduction of W-reactivation even though this is still significant in magnitude when compared to the results obtained for the recA mutant. In the recA mutant W-reactivation capability is totally absent. Contrary to our results with bacteriophage λ , the <em>recB-</em> and recF mutants individually show enhanced W-reactivation of fd phage. The double mutant <em>recB-recF-</em> however, shows virtually no UV-reactivation potential. This is the same case for <em>recA-</em> mutant. Host-cell reactivation - an excision repair dependent potential was examined in the fd phage, λ vir and Pl vira. Our results demonstrate that host-cell recovery is non-existent in fd phage. On the other hand, we noticed high levels of phage recovery in λ vir and Pl vira. We have demonstrated that although <em>recB-recF-</em> double mutant closely resembles the recA single mutant in their UV-sensitivity and recombination profile, this resemblance is seen to be parallel when their UV-inducible capability is examined in double stranded bacteriophages. We therefore conclude that there are significant levels of inducible "SOS" DNA repair occurring in the <em>recB-</em> and <em>recF-</em> mutants and not in the double mutant, <em>recB-recF-</em>. This is due to the fact that there are genetic differences in the inducible DNA repair capability of single stranded and double stranded bacteriophages. Advisors/Committee Members: Dr. Robert H.
