This research is a theoretical and practical study about interactive documentaries used as educational tools for the broadcasting of Colombian cultural heritage. It is comprised of three parts, that range from the theoretical to its applied uses. The first part is an analytical corpus, a contextualization under two perspectives: One starting from the connotations of heritage education, digitalization, and information and communication technology usage in cultural heritage digital broadcasting; and the other one starting from the analysis of the relationship between knowledge and new technologies in cyberculture, and the investigation about the teaching functions of multimedia and the teaching implications of technology usage, all within this research's theoretical framework. To accomplish the latter, a brief classification is elaborated and trends and differentiated methods of teaching materials and MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) courses about cultural heritage are established. The focus of the second part of this study is the interactive documentary, highlighting its audiovisual, narrative and stylistics particularities: Role reconsideration of directors and spectators within nonlinear narratives and technical tools that determine its development; exclusive software usage in this type of work and script elaboration as a mind map; and the outlining of browsing and possible interactions in interactive documentaries within multimodal education. Some referent interactive documentaries are analyzed and proposals about this genre made in Colombia from 2012 to 2016 are established, highlighting related proposals to cultural heritage. Lastly, coproduction, promotion, broadcasting, and debate spaces exclusive to interactive audiovisual work in Colombia are defined. In the third part of this study, two examples of interactive documentaries about Colombian cultural heritage are introduced. These are the result and consequence of the theoretical study project, referent analysis, and conceptual outlining. One of the documentaries tends more to multimedia and tangible heritage broadcasting; the other to hypermedia and intangible heritage broadcasting. As a result, two models that contribute to the broadcasting of cultural heritage have been obtained, as well as tools for heritage education directed to new audiences. This demonstrates that in the designing and making of nonlinear documentaries on the Web, different digital art resources can be used, such as video creation, expository documentary, 360° images, two-dimensional animation, and multimedial photography banks and infographics. The object of this research, set out as a study of the current situation in the field of the new audiovisual narrative techniques, is to approach, from an analytical point of view, the relational universe that connects the documentary with the transmedia narrative in the context of media convergence, and thence study in greater depth the emergence and practice of contemporary transmedia documentary production and the different creative strategies and production models employed therein. This study also analyses the important changes that have taken place in the field of the contemporary documentary with the rise and increasing implementation of new documentary forms and strategies as well as the different strategies of rhetoric that have evolved in the realm of digital media, exposed to constant change due to the hybridization of technology and the act of creation. In this hybrid territory of what is now termed the contemporary “cinema of the real”, we thus find tags of new tendencies and formats (from the “mockumentary” to the expanded documentary, among others, leading to the latest genre to be consolidated up to now, the interactive documentary) with a wide range of formal procedures and rhetorical strategies that articulate a huge wave of astonishing creative freedom, all serving to constitute new aesthetics that manage to reshape the documentary devices of representation and narrative in a way that is both diverse and suggestive. In this context, whose most important features and formats will be the object of a detailed taxonomy, we will see the emergence of transmedia narrative linked to reality, to the documentary, with its storytelling strategy expanding into different medias and platforms. After establishing the conceptualizations associated with transmedia narrative, an analysis is undertaken of how it operates in the area of movie production as well as in the area of documentary production, in order to establish the principles that make up this reality in a permanent state of construction, both by the consumer and by the means and methods of production.
