The travel document can then be regarded as a document which contains material in power the ability to generate other documents. As a rhizome which any point can be connected with any other, the first document (book ethnologist, or logbook, for example) that contains scientific information comes into connection with other heterogeneous documents (edition of a travel journal for the public, scientific article written from the book or the minutes…

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to undertake and improve the accuracy of locating the relevant documents from a large amount of Electronic Medical Data (EMD). The unique goal of this research is to propose a new idea for using medical ontology to find an easy and more reliable approach for patients to have a better understanding of their diseases and also help doctors to find and further improve the possible methods of diagnosis and treatments. The empirical studies were based on the dataset provided by CLEF focused on health care data. In this research, I have used Information Retrieval to find and obtain relevant information within the large amount of data sets provided by CLEF. I then used ranking functionality on the Terrier platform to calculate and evaluate the matching documents in the collection of data sets. BM25 was used as the base normalization method to retrieve the results and Pseudo Relevance Feedback weighting model to retrieve the information regarding patients health history and medical records in order to find more accurate results. I then used Unified Medical Language System to develop indexing of the queries while searching on the Internet and looking for health related documents. UMLS software was actually used to link the computer system with the health and biomedical terms and vocabularies into classify tools; it works as a dictionary for the patients by translating the medical terms. Later I would like to work on using medical ontology to create a relationship between the documents regarding the medical data and my retrieved results.

▼ The amount of data we are dealing with is being generated at an astronomical pace. With the rapid technological advances in the field of data storage techniques, storing and transmitting copious amounts of data has become very easy and hassle-free. However, exploring those abundant data and finding the interesting ones has always been a huge integral challenge and cumbersome process to people in all industrial sectors. A model to rank data by interest will help in saving the time spent on the large amount of data. In this research we concentrate specifically on ranking the text documents in corpora according to ``interestingness''
We design a state-of-the-art empirical model to rank documents according to ``interestingness''. The model is cost-efficient, fast and automated to an extent which requires minimal human intervention. We identify different categories of documents based on the word-usage pattern which in turn classifies them as being interesting, mundane or anomalous documents. The model is a novel approach which does not depend on the semantics of the words used in the document but is based on the repetition of words and rate of introduction of new words in the document. The model is a generic design which can be applied to a document corpus of any size from any domain. The model can be used to rank new documents introduced into the corpus. We formulate a couple of normalization techniques which can be used to neutralize the impact of variable document length.
We use three approaches, namely dictionary-based data compression, analysis of the rate of new word occurrences and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). To test the model we use a variety of corpora namely: US Diplomatic Cable releases by Wikileaks, US Presidents State of Union Addresses, Open American National Corpus and 20 Newsgroups articles. The techniques have various pre-processing steps which are totally automated. We compare the results of the three techniques and examine the level of agreement between pair of techniques using a statistical method called the Jaccard coefficient. This approach can also be used to detect the unusual and anomalous documents within the corpus.
The results also contradict the assumptions made by Simon and Yule in deriving an equation for a general text generation model.

▼ As digital books begin to take center stage in our lives the importance of the old printed book still lingers on. A large number of the books printed on the paper media still have much to offer to readers for various reasons (e.g. less famous authors of prose, old books with interesting and original problems). To help individuals in digitizing and reusing their physical and digital books we decided to build a framework that will help people convert physical and digital books to other formats taking into consideration four dimensions: learning outcomes or methodology, target device characteristics, representation and the user. Our focus is on textbooks in history. Consequently, we do not consider some problems like math formulas. This work has the potential of helping people deal with the huge backlog of physical books that can become invisible as the digital books take off.
To show that our platform can help in repurposing books for student study activities, we have developed some transformations. The transformations we have implemented shows that the framework can be used to add study aids to books, optimize books for a target platform (e-reader device and application combination), and supplement available features of a target platform and maintain consistency across various audio/visual devices and e-book formats.
One of the important steps in the thesis was determining the study activities that we would support as examples in our implementation. We have chosen to implement support for the survey, question, read and review activities of the SQ3R reading technique. We have also implemented support for additional activities like search. The chosen activities and the support implemented for these activities are examples and are not meant to be complete.
Another important decision point was to decide which target platforms (e-reader device and application combination) we need to support. We decided to choose a few representatives and leave the rest as future work. The target devices were selected so as to have a variety of device capabilities like screen size, display technology (e.g. e-ink, VGA), and user interaction styles (e.g. touch-based, button based) combined with application capabilities (e.g. audio only, visual only, audio visual, grayscale, and color). The devices selected were: iPad, iPod, iPhone, Kindle 3rd generation, Kindle Fire, Sony PRS and a laptop. The e-reader applications are the ones that are available for these devices.

▼ The problem of
document classification has been widely studied in machine learning and data mining. In
document classification, most of the popular algorithms are based on the bag-of-words representation. Due to the high dimensionality of the bag-of-words representation, significant research has been conducted to reduce the dimensionality via different approaches. One such approach is to learn a codebook by clustering the words. Most of the current word- clustering algorithms work by building a single codebook to encode the original dataset for classification purposes. However, this single codebook captures only a part of the information present in the data. This thesis presents two new methods and their variations to construct multiple non-redundant codebooks using multiple rounds of word clusterings in a sequential manner to improve the final classification accuracy. Results on benchmark data sets are presented to demonstrate that the proposed algorithms significantly outperform both the single codebook approach and multiple codebooks learned in a bagging-style approach.

▼ Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch)) – University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
This study investigates the role of that which the style concept people‐orientation plays with
regard to image formation and image projection in documentation, with specific reference to
the Stellenbosch University’s registration forms. The goal of this study was firstly to determine
how the concept people‐orientation could be operationalized within this specific case study.
Regarding image formation and image projection, the researcher aimed to determine (a) what
students’ current image of the University Stellenbosch is, (b) if students regard peopleorientation as an important style aspect within communication and (c) if the presence or
absence of people‐orientation has an effect on the image of an institution.
The Integrated Model for Image Formation and Projection (IFP‐model), whereupon this study is
based, suggests that different messages in a document can have an effect on the image of an
institution. These messages can however be manipulated in order to determine or adjust the
image of an institution. In reference to this, this study investigated the effects of a presence or lack of people‐orientation as an aspect of style in communication. The researcher defines
people‐orientation as a concept that bears reference to those aspects which directly or
indirectly writes the human role player (including the writer and the reader) into the text. In other words, it refers to communication that puts the role of the person in the foreground of the communication situation.
The concept of people‐orientation is however very complex in the sense that it can be created
by a number of document design aspects. Thus the best way to test people‐orientation was to
identify a number of operationalizeable design aspects. The researcher selected five style
aspects which at core has relevance to people‐orientation. These five aspects were forms of
address, reference to self, the use of passive or active voice, the use of politeness and empathy
markers and the use of graphical illustration, which for the purpose of this study also classifies as a stylistic signal.
Thirty‐two respondents from the Humaniora faculties were selected to participate in this study.
Although the faculty of Economical and Management Sciences and the Faculty of Law traditionally fall under this division, only the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education were used. Gender and race were incorporated as independent variables of this study.
Respondents’ attitudes were tested using interviews as the primary methodology, aided by
informal questionnaires as secondary methodology. Questionnaire results were however not
processed by use of the traditional statistical methods, mainly because the sample of the study
was too small. These results were only functional as a basis from which tendencies could be
identified. Interview results had a very multi‐dimensional quality and the researcher therefore
decided that it would be best to discuss…

▼ Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch)) – University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study the balance between relational and expressive messages on the
image formation and projection of a document is studied. To study the effect of
these messages, a case study was done on one of the donation letters of
Stellenbosch University (SU).
The purpose of the research was firstly to established what the image formation
and projection of the SU was. The quality of the SU’s image and communication
had to be determined. Secondly, the degree of attachment between die SU and
respondents was measured to see if it had any influence on the way that they
perceived the SU.
The IFP-model (Image Formation and Projection model) served as a theoretical
basis for the study – the model postulates that various document design aspects
and concepts such as image, identitity and culture influence each other. The
model was then used to a) identify problematic areas in the documentation b)
form the basis of the questionnaire and c) explain the connection between the
image formation and projection, and the style aspects in die document.
The third goal of the research was to operationalize the relational and expressive
messages by manipulating specific style aspects. The researcher had determined
that the two messages were imbalanced in the original donation letter, to the
extent that the reader did not have any real ‘presence’ in the document. The
researcher then proceeded to design a second version of the donation letter, but
with the relational and expressive messages brought into balance.
Alumni of the SU were chosen as respondents for the study. The Stellenbosch
Foundation distributed the questionnaires, along with the two versions of the
letter. The researcher had decided upon e-mail as a distribution channel to
discount any geographical bias. Two variables were used: Race (coloured and
white persons) and age. Younger than 35 years of age, and 35 years of age or
older than 35 were chosen as arbitrary cutoff points for respondents.
The results were processed statistically so that trends and data could be
displayed clearly. Results showed that alumni do have a positive image of the SU,
as well as its communication. Alumni also feel reasonably connected to the SU. A
strong preference was however shown for the redesigned donation letter, wherein the two messages are balanced out. This means that the SU’s image is projected
in a more positive way in a document where the reader has a bigger presence.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study determines whether media reporting has any influence on members’ image
formation processes of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC). The aim of this study was (a) to
determine respondents’ attitudes towards the Church, (b) to determine respondents’ image
of the Church, (c) to establish whether media reporting has any influence on members’
image formation of the DRC, and (d) to define such influence, if any.
This study is based on the Integrated Communication Model for Image Formation and
Projection (the IFP model) as theoretical foundation. The IFP model suggests that certain
document design aspects, such as content, style, structure and graphics, may influence a
company or organisation’s image. Following on the IFP model this study determined the
effect that rhetorical content devices in media reports have on DRC members’ image of the
Church. The rhetorical devices that were analysed are direct criticism, contrast, laden words,
implication phenomena, sarcasm and insinuation. The study investigated how these
rhetorical devices are employed to have a harmful effect on the image of the DRC.
A total of 127 respondents, all of them DRC members, were selected from four
congregations in the Boland region. The congregations are situated in Worcester (rural),
Malmesbury (semi-rural), Paarl (semi-urban) and Durbanville (urban). Gender and age were
incorporated as independent variables of this study.
Members’ attitude and image with regard to the DRC and media reporting were determined
by means of a questionnaire survey as primary methodology, while the possible influence of
media reporting was established through a text analysis (rhetorical discourse analysis, or
RDA) – another primary methodology. Professor Martin Kidd from Stellenbosch University’s
Centre for Statistical Consultation prepared the statistical processing of the survey
responses. The results are depicted by means of histograms and other statistical methods.
The results show that members’ attitudes towards, and image of, the Church are less
positive than what the Church may have hoped for: Members generally have a cautiously
positive image of the Church. In addition, results indicate that media reporting does indeed
influence the image formation processes of the DRC; that this influence is negative, and that it contributes to a less positive image of the Church.

▼ Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of bureaucratese in government institutions‟ external communication and the effect that it has on the institution‟s image. Furthermore the impact that this communication has on the institution‟s relationship with it‟s audience should also be explored and the notion that it creates a power distance relationship should be examined.
Firstly the Communication Model for Image Formation and Projection (De Stadler, s.a.1) is discussed to explain the connection between communication and institutional image. Then relevant concepts, for example, image, communication, bureaucratese and power distance are explained.
Secondly, bureaucratese is explained as a register and is then divided into it‟s different aspects. These aspects relate to style choices as informed by the literature on the Plain Language Movement. This set of aspects or dimensions then creates the criteria for the analysis of 16 texts. This study does not only use qualitative data, but also quantitative data and therefore a questionaire was sent out to 80 respondents. The purpose of the questionaire was to retrieve data that couldn‟t be obtained from the qualitative data. These aspects were the image of the institution and also the relationship between the institution and it‟s audience.
The results show that bureacratese does have a negative impact on an institution‟s image. It also shows that the use of burocratic language creates a power distance relationship between an institution and it‟s audience. Language (in this case burocratic language) becomes an instrument through which the culture of an institutions is transferred from inside the institution onto it‟s audience.

▼ Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch. Document Analysis)) – University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
In this study, research has been done on the institutional image of the Stellenbosch
University (SU). The impact of the true and desired image on the written
communication of the SU has been researched to determine how much influence the US
can have on the forming of the institutional image and how it can be improved to
correlate more with the desired image of the SU. The focus was, more specifically, on
the written communication of the Registrar’s division of the SU and their institutional
documents. The institutional image was tested by means of questionnaires filled in by
the students of the SU. The groups have been selected in accordance with the
population profile of the SU to be statistically representitave of the true population
studying at the SU.

▼ Digital collections are growing exponentially in size as the information age takes a firm grip on all aspects of society. As a result Information Retrieval (IR) has become an increasingly important area of research. It promises to provide new and more effective ways for users to find information relevant to their search intentions. Document clustering is one of the many tools in the IR toolbox and is far from being perfected. It groups documents that share common features. This grouping allows a user to quickly identify relevant information. If these groups are misleading then valuable information can accidentally be ignored. There- fore, the study and analysis of the quality of document clustering is important. With more and more digital information available, the performance of these algorithms is also of interest. An algorithm with a time complexity of O(n2) can quickly become impractical when clustering a corpus containing millions of documents. Therefore, the investigation of algorithms and data structures to perform clustering in an efficient manner is vital to its success as an IR tool. Document classification is another tool frequently used in the IR field. It predicts categories of new documents based on an existing database of (doc- ument, category) pairs. Support Vector Machines (SVM) have been found to be effective when classifying text documents. As the algorithms for classifica- tion are both efficient and of high quality, the largest gains can be made from improvements to representation. Document representations are vital for both clustering and classification. Representations exploit the content and structure of documents. Dimensionality reduction can improve the effectiveness of existing representations in terms of quality and run-time performance. Research into these areas is another way to improve the efficiency and quality of clustering and classification results. Evaluating document clustering is a difficult task. Intrinsic measures of quality such as distortion only indicate how well an algorithm minimised a sim- ilarity function in a particular vector space. Intrinsic comparisons are inherently limited by the given representation and are not comparable between different representations. Extrinsic measures of quality compare a clustering solution to a “ground truth” solution. This allows comparison between different approaches. As the “ground truth” is created by humans it can suffer from the fact that not every human interprets a topic in the same manner. Whether a document belongs to a particular topic or not can be subjective.

▼ Since the introduction of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) in 2008, the number of MOOCs offered by universities has increased enormously. Over 700 universities offer a total of 5924 MOOCs. Each MOOC holds a sequence of 10 to 140 videos and are meant to help online learners understand a given topic. These videos are intended to be watched in a specific, sequential order. This order can be seen as a chain where video 1 provides enough prerequisite knowledge for video 2, video 2 for video 3 and so on. In theory that is fine, however, this order is not necessarily the only ideal order to watch videos in. The online learner might want to take shortcuts through the MOOC's videos, find additional information on the topic in another video or explore what other subjects are available to study. In other words, the online learner could benefit from improved navigational features to better explore the surrounding relevant videos. By branching out the viewing order towards videos in other MOOCs, we add alternative sequence orders as possible learning paths for the online learner. This can help online learners plan out an alternative sequence order based on their own interests and backgrounds. The chain-like sequence order as described above, where one video provides the prerequisite knowledge for its successor, is crucial for creating alternative sequence orders. When video 1 from MOOC A is found to be similar to video 5 from MOOC B, it can be assumed that video 1 provides the prerequisite knowledge for video 6 in MOOC B. Similar videos between the MOOCs are found by comparing their transcripts, titles and durations. Based on this similarity a new sequence order is set up from one video to its similar counterparts’ successor video. We structure these alternative sequence orders by representing the videos from MOOCs as nodes into a graph and connect them with directed edges that represent the sequence order between videos. Several methods for finding similarities have been compared to find the most accurate way of comparing transcriptions where the method doc2vec yields the most accurate similarity cases. Evaluation based on a user study shows that our method creates alternative sequence orders that have 58.7% positive user ratings. This can be compared to semi-randomly picked sequence orders and the original sequence order defined in the MOOC, which have 8.0% and 76% positive user ratings respectively. This shows that the alternative sequence orders are significantly better than the semi-randomly picked sequence orders, and comparable but not as good as the original sequence order defined in the MOOC.

▼ Document image analysis involves the recognition and understanding of
document images using computer vision techniques. The research described in this thesis relates to the recognition of graphical elements of a
document image. More specifically, an approach for recognizing various types of charts as well as their components is presented. This research has many potential applications. For example, a user could redraw a chart in a different style or convert the chart to a table, without possessing the original information that was used to create the chart. Another application is the ability to find information, which is only presented in the chart, using a search engine.
A complete solution to chart image recognition and understanding is presented. The proposed algorithm extracts enough information such that the chart can be recreated. The method is a syntactic approach which uses mathematical grammars to recognize and classify every component of a chart. There are two grammars presented in this thesis, one which analyzes 2D and 3D pie charts and the other which analyzes 2D and 3D bar charts, as well as line charts. The pie chart grammar isolates each slice and its properties whereas the bar and line chart grammar recognizes the bars, indices, gridlines and polylines.
The method is evaluated in two ways. A qualitative approach redraws the chart for the user, and a semi-automated quantitative approach provides a complete analysis of the accuracy of the proposed method. The qualitative analysis allows the user to see exactly what has been classified correctly. The quantitative analysis gives more detailed information about the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed method. The results of the evaluation process show that the accuracy of the proposed methods for chart recognition is very high.

▼ Since the amount of text data stored in computer repositories is growing every day, we need more than ever a reliable way to group or categorize text documents. Most of the existing
document clustering techniques use a group of keywords from each
document to cluster the documents. In this thesis, we have used a sense based approach to cluster documents instead of using only the frequency of the keywords. We use relationships between the keywords to cluster the documents. The relationships are retrieved from the WordNet ontology and represented in the form of a graph. The
document-graphs, which reflect the essence of the documents, are searched in order to find the frequent subgraphs. To discover the frequent subgraphs, we use the Frequent Pattern Growth (FP-growth) approach, which was originally designed to discover frequent patterns. The common frequent subgraphs discovered by the FP-growth approach are later used to cluster the documents. The FP-growth approach requires the creation of an FP-tree. Mining the FP-tree, which is created for a normal transaction database, is easier compared to large
document-graphs, mostly because the itemsets in a transaction database is smaller compared to the edge list of our
document-graphs. Original FP-tree mining procedure is also easier because the items of a traditional transaction database are stand-alone entities and have no direct connection to each other. In contrast, as we look for subgraphs in graphs, they become related to each other in the context of connectivity. The computation cost makes the original FP-growth approach somewhat inefficient for text documents. We modify the FP-growth approach, making it possible to generate frequent subgraphs from the FP-tree. Later, we cluster documents using these subgraphs.

▼ Document summarization is the task of automatically generating a shorter version of a document or multiple documents while retaining the most important information. The task has received much attention in the natural language processing community due to its potential for various information access applications. Examples include tools that digest textual content (e.g., news, social media, reviews), answer questions, or provide recommendations. Summarization approaches are dedicated to processing single or multiple documents as well as creating extractive or abstractive summaries. In extractive summarization, summaries are formed by copying and concatenating the most important spans (usually sentences) from the input text, while abstractive approaches are able to generate summaries using words or phrases that are not in the original text. A core module within summarization is how to represent documents and distill information for downstream tasks (e.g., abstraction or extraction). Thanks to the popularity of neural network models and their ability to learn continuous representations, many new systems have been proposed for document modeling and summarization in recent years. This thesis investigates different approaches with neural network models to address the document summarization problem. We develop several novel neural models considering extractive and abstractive approaches for both single-document and multi-document scenarios. We first investigate how to represent a single document with a randomly initialized neural network. Contrary to previous approaches that ignore document structure when encoding the input, we propose a structured attention mechanism, which can impose a structural bias of document-level dependency trees when modeling a document, generating more powerful document representations. We first apply this model to the task of document classification, and subsequently to extractive single-document summarization using an iterative refinement process to learn more complex tree structures. Experimental results on both tasks show that the structured attention mechanism achieves competitive performance. Very recently, pretrained language models have achieved great success on several natural language understanding tasks by training large neural models on an enormous corpus with a language modeling objective. These models learn rich contextual information and to some extent are able to learn the structure of the input text. While summarization systems could in theory also benefit from pretrained language models, there are some potential obstacles to applying these pretrained models to document summarization tasks. The second part of this thesis focuses on how to represent a single document with pretrained language models. Beyond previous approaches that learn solely from the summarization dataset, this thesis proposes a framework for using pretrained language models as encoders for both extractive and abstractive summarization. The framework achieves state-of-the-art results on three datasets. Finally, in…

▼ Ranking is an algorithm
that defines an ordering among objects. This thesis will
address the challenge of ranking structured documents.
Traditional ranking methods involve link analysis,
relevancy measure, or manual assessment; the aim is to
rank the “important” document higher than the less
“important” documents. The meaning of the term
“important” would need to be defined. For example, one
may rank the documents according to their popularity, by
considering the number of documents which are linked to
it. One may consider the “quality” of the documents, and
rank the documents according to this “quality” criterion.
Or one may consider the “relevancy” of the documents, and
rank documents higher the more relevant they are to a
given situation. However, most of
these methods are not taking into consideration the
contents of the document. The ”popularity” and the
contents of the document are actually inseparable in the
study of document ranking according to an ”important”
criterion. The content of document as well as its
structural properties can be extracted and the structural
properties can be expressed as a graph representation,
involving nodes (representing word tokens), and links
(links among the word tokens). Note that in this
representation, the word tokens are merely “symbols”;
they are not endowed with meanings, thus avoiding the
tedious task of providing word tokens with meanings. The
contextual information is inferred from the statistical
properties of words which co-occurred in the same order,
and in similar context within the given text corpus. This
graph representation is called a concept link graph. In
this thesis, we propose a novel representation called a
graph of graphs (GoGs) representation to describe the
structured documents, which may be connected by
hyperlinks or citations. A GoGs is a hierarchy of graphs,
the top level graph is the concept link graph, and the
nodes in this top level concept link graph can be
described by other concept link graphs which represent
the documents which linked into the top level document,
and so on. Such a graph of graphs representation can be
very useful to model the inter-linking of documents by
encoding the structural information at different levels,
such as the relationships among documents, relationships
among paragraphs within a document, relationships among
words within a paragraph of a document, etc. This
representation allows us to include document properties
and contents to different depth, so that it can be used
in different machine learning applications.
We then propose…

This thesis deals with the work of Huysmans ranging from his first writings until the eve of his disagreement with Zola; À Rebours being the point of disjunction between an initial period of setting up and a series of multiple literary experiences where the naturalistic method is the guarantor of unity. For if naturalistic writing was, at some point in the life of Huysmans, a form of initiation, it has not ceased to be a way of thinking and the author claims this naturalist part even in his most mystical novels. Huysmans therefore wants to write a book while avoiding idealizing the world, that is to say, a non-fiction book. Through this, he takes part in the naturalist movement. For, to banish the intrusions of the author, in the name of experimental objectivity, is one of the foundations of the naturalist current. But paradoxically, by pushing the theoretical discourse of the experimental novel to the end of its logic, Huysmans' writing will lead to a sort of break-up of the traditional structure of the novel, as evidenced some years later the writing of À Rebours. Indeed, Huysmans draws in his own way Zola's naturalist theory. He quickly realized that this theory will lead to a dead end and that we must go to the edge of this experience in order to be able to pass on to others. But this stage of its formation definitely marked it, especially as a method of documentation. The literary experience of Huysmans during this decade is symptomatic…

▼ This thesis presents the concept of hybrid semantic-document models to aid information management when using standards for complex technical domains such as military data communication. These standards are traditionally text based documents for human interpretation, but prose sections can often be ambiguous and can lead to discrepancies and subsequent implementation problems. Many organisations produce semantic representations of the material to ensure common understanding and to exploit computer aided development. In developing these semantic representations, no relationship is maintained to the original prose. Maintaining relationships between the original prose and the semantic model has key benefits, including assessing conformance at a semantic level, and enabling original content authors to explicitly define their intentions, thus reducing ambiguity and facilitating computer aided functionality. Through the use of a case study method based on the military standard MIL-STD-6016C, a framework of relationships is proposed. These relationships can integrate with common document modelling techniques and provide the necessary functionality to allow semantic content to be mapped into document views. These relationships are then generalised for applicability to a wider context. Additionally, this framework is coupled with a templating approach which, for repeating sections, can improve consistency and further enhance quality. A reflective approach to model driven web rendering is presented and evaluated. This reflective approach uses self-inspection at runtime to read directly from the model, thus eliminating the need for any generative processes which result in data duplication across source used for different purpose.

▼ This thesis proposes a novel similarity measure that applies between documents. The proposed measure is also extended to gauge the similarity between two sets of documents. Furthermore, a new method of similarity measure implementation is assigned to detect near-duplicate documents.
To measure the similarity between two documents is a significant utilization in the text field. Computing the similarity between two documents with respect to a feature, the appropriate features are selected to represent documents, and employed to measure the similarity. Therefore, a similarity measure between two documents may be interested about the feature appears in both documents or not, similarity degree
between features, and the number of similar features. In this thesis, we propose a new similarity based on three cases of the feature appear conditions.
Documentâs similarity differentiating is a significant operation in the text processing. For items of documents are huge, selecting the appropriate
features to represent documents and facilitate this target are important. The documentation analysis usually retrieves the information sufficient to cover contents of the documents as a representative of
documents feature. These features may be a single letter, word, sentence, or even whole paragraph. And the vector-space model is used to represent the features. To compute the similarity between two documents with respect to a feature, the major measure takes the following three cases into account: a) The feature appears in both documents, b) the feature appears in only one
document, and c) the feature appears in none of the documents. Based on the research and to improve the performance of the similarity measure algorithms, our proposed measure
is extended to gauge the similarity between two sets of documents. The effectiveness of our measure is evaluated on several real-world data sets for text classification and clustering problems, and the results are better than that achieved by other measures.
For more consider of similarity measure, an implementation of detecting near-duplicate documents is also demonstrated. Based on similarity measure, we present a novel method for detecting near-duplicates from a large collection of documents.
To distinguish near-duplicate documents is extremely important in the Internet era. If a search engine can effectively determine the near-duplicate
documents will have access to reduce the number of duplicate documents retrieved, jointly and severally improve the search performance. For this purpose, we also propose a novel method for detecting
near-duplicates from a huge collection of documents. Three major parts are involved in our method, feature selection, similarity measure, and discriminant derivation. To find near-duplicates to an input
document, each sentence of the input
document is fetched and preprocessed, the weight of each term is calculated, and the heavily weighted terms are selected to be the feature of the sentence. As a result, the input
document is turned into a set of such features. A…

▼ ISO 9001 certification has become an important way for companies that develop software products and services to advertise proof of quality software. In addition, ISO 9001 certification is increasingly being written into contracts. Consequently, software developers are increasingly being required to follow ISO guidelines and adhere to ISO standards. This paper introduces QDocMan, a
document management software package that helps software developers follow the ISO 9001:2015 guidelines and requirements. QDocMan enforces a process for developing software and leads developers through the artifacts that are required to
document that the process has been followed. QDocMan also stores the artifacts and processes in easy-to-navigate user interface that supports the developer during ISO audits.

▼ In the business and the operation management, business strategies and operation guidelines are manually recorded on paper in large repositories. The data include standard operating procedures, work instructions, technical documents, manufacturing specifications and training materials. However, many companies are facing problems of
document managements including a lack of updated information,
document duplication, file misplacement and inconsistency, etc. Furthermore, accumulated working experiences, considered as parts of the most valuable resources of companies, are not well preserved after resignations and retirements of senior employees. This critical situation is apparent especially in those companies established over decades and affects the operation efficiency and the future expansion.
This study helps understand the needs of
document managements and shares experiences of
document management implementations in the company.
The standard processes of the
document management includes source establishment, information review, data examination and format, file security and restoration and user feedback. In fact, most of companies do not carry out the entire processes. Companies can develop their own
document management systems according to their business formats and operation demands. With the advent of computers, companies build up
document management concepts by applying software like MIS. In addition, companies can also use ISO
document management processes as the paradigm for the
document management establishment. The
document management gives companies abilities to learn faster and take better reactions in the market. Efficiency becomes the competitive advantage of the company which is able to outperform competitors in the industry.

▼ Nowadays, academic researchers maintain a personal
library of papers, which they would like to organize based on their
needs, e.g., research, projects, or courseware. Clustering
techniques are often employed to achieve this goal by grouping the
document collection into different topics. Unsupervised clustering
does not require any user effort but only produces one universal
output with which users may not be satisfied. Therefore,
document
clustering needs user input for guidance to generate personalized
clusters for different users. Semi-supervised clustering
incorporates prior information and has the potential to produce
customized clusters. Traditional semi-supervised clustering is
based on user supervision in the form of labeled instances or
pairwise instance constraints. However, alternative forms of user
supervision exist such as labeling features. For
document
clustering,
document supervision involves labeling documents while
feature supervision involves labeling features. Their joint of use
has been called dual supervision. In this thesis, we first explore
and propose a framework to use feature supervision for interactive
feature selection by indicating whether a feature is useful for
clustering. Second, we enhance the semi-supervised clustering with
feature supervision using feature reweighting. Third, we propose a
unified framework to combine
document supervision and feature
supervision through seeding. The newly proposed algorithms are
evaluated using oracles and demonstrated to be more helpful in
producing better clusters matching a single user's point of view
than
document clustering without any supervision and with only
document supervision. Finally, we conduct a user study to confirm
that different users have different understandings of the same
document collection and prefer personalized clusters. At the same
time, we demonstrate that
document clustering with dual supervision
is able to produce good personalized clusters even with noisy user
input. Dual supervision is also demonstrated to be more effective
in personalized clustering than no supervision or any single
supervision. We also analyze users' behaviors during the user study
and present suggestions for the design of
document management
software.

▼ Organizing personal collections of digital documents
can be frustrating for two main reasons. First, the effort required
to work with the folder system on personal computers and the
possible misplacement and loss of documents. Second, the lack of
effective organization and management tools for personal
collections of digital documents. The research in this thesis
investigated specific visualization and clustering features
intended for organizing collections of documents and built in a
prototype interface that was compared to a baseline interface from
previous research. The results showed that those features helped
users with: 1) the initial classification of documents into
clusters during the supervised stage; 2) the modification of
clusters; 3) the cluster labeling process; 4) the presentation of
the final set of organized documents; 5) the efficiency of the
organization process, and 6) achieving better accuracy in the
clusters created for organizing the documents.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study the focus is on the yearbooks of the Stellenbosch University with spesific reference to the consumer friendliness thereof. The researcher focused on the General Yearbook as well as an extract from the Humanities Yearbook of the Stellenbosch University. The goals of this study is to firstly determine (a) what is the present image that prospective students have of the Stellenbosch University, (b) if the SU Yearbooks have any impact on the image formation of these prospective students and (c) if so, what is the exact impact of the yearbooks on the image formation process of these students and how can it be improved.
There are five important factors that measure the consumer friendliness of a
document. These factors refer to the physical access to a
document, the external structure, the ergonomy of a
document, the style of writing and the cognitive access (understanding) of the text. These factors are closely tied to each other, but for the sake of this study, the researcher decided to focus only on the factors that directly influence the consumer friendliness of a
document.
The researcher decided on four stylistic aspects that influence the consumer friendliness of a
document. These refer, firstly, to the external structure of a
document with specific reference to the margins, headings and paragraphs in the chosen
document. Secondly, the focus is on the information distribution of the
document, i.e. the organisation and representation of information. The third aspect refers to forms of address in the
document including both references to the writer as well as to the reader. The last aspect that is researched in this study is the style concept of formality. The researcher primarily focuses on difficult words and phrases in the text as well as the use of passive and active sentence constructions.
The researcher also tests the concept of consumer-friendliness with a usability test based on an extract taken out of the Yearbook of Humanities. The researcher’s hypothesis claimes that the yearbooks of the Stellenbosch University are not consumer-friendly and that this can have a negative influence on the image that the prospective student forms of the SU. By determining this perception under the prospective students in the study, the researcher could find a suitable solution from the results to improve the image that the current documentation reflects and also to help the yearbooks of the SU fulfill its purpose which is to serve as an accessible information guide that is consumer-friendly.
The Integrated Model for Formation and Projection, the IFP-model, on which this study is based, determines that different messages in a
document can have an effect on the image of an institution. These messages can however be manipulated in order to determine or adjust the image of an institution.
123 respondents from the Paarl Gymnasium High School and Luckhoff High took part in this study. Gender and race were incorporated as independent variables in the study. These respondents’ attitudes were measured…
