▼ In the field of
digital cultural heritage,
digital libraries have played the role of preserving and sharing cultural material in
digital format. These tools (portals, collections and archives) have been influenced by the evolution of the
digital medium and by new
technologies which, over the years, have been provided both by the areas defined as neighbours and by conceptually distant environments.
The birth of the web has played a fundamental role in today's concept of
digital library, in fact this tool has allowed us to increase the scope of these collections and greatly improve their functions. In this sense it is possible to observe how
digital libraries have evolved together with the web and how they have always exploited the
technologies offered by cyberspace. This improves the possibilities offered to specialists in the sector and those who rely on these collections, their study, or simply to increase their cultural baggage.
These collections however are affected by numerous problems that undermine not only the possibilities offered to users and specialists but also their main functions of sharing and protection. Over the last few years, several specialists and academics have focused their attention on the analysis of these solutions. Nevertheless, many possible solutions have been offered in the past and today. This area suffers from various problems that undermine the operations connected to these collections.
The objective of this paper is to analyse the evolution of
digital libraries in order to offer an analysis of the aforementioned problems and, as a consequence, to suggest a possible solution. Exploiting the new
technologies offered by the
digital medium is able to resolve, or at least curb, the weaknesses that grip this area. Through the proposal of an ecosystem for
digital libraries of cultural heritage and
digital cultural heritage initiatives based on the joint use of IPFS and the Ripple ledger, this work aims to offer a solution able to overcome the critical issues analysed during this study. Yet the proposed ecosystem should not be understood in any way as a conclusive point on the question but the main objective is to offer ideas. On these elements, we may build a debate on the potential of these
technologies and their possible application within the field of
digital libraries.

The teacher formation in the digital culture translates the necessity of investigating how this process is occurring currently in the field of education. In this context, this thesis had as goal of study the teacher education in digital culture and aimed to analyze how the process of construction of conceptions of pedagogical technology use in school and the collective production of proposals of actions for their integration to the curriculum occured, starting from the interindividual interactions of teachers in the course of especialization Education in Digital Culture. The course aimed to offer continued training to teachers and managers from the public education network for the creative and critical integration of the Digital Technologies of Information to the curriculum of basic education. It based itself theoretically starting from the contemporary readings around the expansion of digital technologies and their pedagogical use. The theoric basis that gave support to the analysis of the construction of conceptions and interindividual exchanges between the student-teachers, constituted itself from the Theory of Jean Piaget, by which we discussed and explored the theoretical references relative to the…

▼ This dissertation discusses a current niche in sociological literature: technology and interaction rituals in elementary schools. In particular, it examines the relationship between classroom interactions and the increasing available new forms of
technologies (i.e. iPads, robotics kits, Smart boards) that are finding their way into schools. In doing so, I consider what new interactions and
digital tools might mean for student engagement in what has now become known as the “21st century classroom”. Two pivotal sociological theories are utilized in this project: 1) Collins (2004) interaction ritual (IR) theory and 2) Bourdieu’s (1974; 1986) concept of cultural capital. Both are valuable in understanding how the introduction of
digital tools in mainstream schools can influence or change interactions between and among students and teachers in classrooms, how they may impact student engagement gaps. Traditionally speaking, schools have long valued and rewarded certain types of interactions—student obedience alongside teacher authority, an orderly and compliant classroom, emphasis on more traditional teaching and so forth. Student engagement was not necessarily a point of interest, as was having a systematic classroom. However, perhaps technology is beginning to change those valuations, and create new types of classroom interactions that are unique to the 21st century—classrooms that have a more student-centered pedagogy, whereby teachers work in tandem with students to engross them in the learning process, and where student engagement is more much valued. If this is true, this may be a sign of some new emerging types of IRs that are beginning to surface in the presence of technology.
Collins' (2004) theory of IR focuses on the emotional input and feedback of individuals that transpire in interactions among actors, which in the case of classrooms, consist of teachers and students. The theory holds that interactions produce or deplete “emotional energy” of participants depending on many key factors (physical co-presence, exclusivity of group, mutual focus/mood, bodily synchronization). A successful ritual is one in which participants have a mutual focus on a particular “symbol” or “emblem” unique to that group. Through this research, I propose that technology can serve as that “emblem” to group membership, and as a result, can facilitate new kinds of IR. “Cultural capital”, in comparison, is usually considered to be a collection of symbolic elements such as skills, tastes, clothing, materials, credentials and so on that one acquires by being a member of a particular social class. In education, cultural capital can refer to having valued sets of skills and knowledge that are aligned with school rewards. Traditionally, this usually meant a middle-upper class advantage in schooling, as students of more affluent families were able to learn valued kinds of skill sets to help them achieve better in school. However, with the advent of new
technologies, I question whether notions of cultural capital have changed as a result,…

▼ The
digital era is a time when available technology enables access to information, ideas and people from a range of locations, at anytime. Young graduating teachers have grown up using
digital technologies and some educators see this generation as
digital saviours who will sweep into schools, able to teach the
digital generation in
relevant ways. This thesis examines the experiences of digitally able beginning secondary school teachers as they attempted to transfer their knowledge of
digital technologies to the teaching context. The methodological approach taken in this research was a multiple case study underpinned by a complexity theory conceptual framework. Six digitally confident teachers volunteered to be examined through interviews and observation during their first year of secondary teaching to identify how they used
digital technologies in their
teaching practice, the learning that occurred, and the barriers and enablers experienced while attempting to integrate
digital technologies into teaching praxis. A
digital age learning matrix was developed as a research tool based on connectivist
learning theory to measure the types of learning activities used by the teachers. Student think alouds were used to ascertain the learning that was occurring in the classroom. During the year, each of the teachers transferred their knowledge of
digital
technologies while facing challenges and accessing support from within and beyond the schooling context in which they were teaching. Using generic inductive qualitative analysis, the barriers and enablers were coded to five categories based on patterns identified from the interviews including: access, experience, support, school structures
and knowledge. It was found that teachers with strong pedagogical content knowledge, that included the use of
subject specific
digital technologies or applications, were more likely to include knowledge creation in their learning
activities. The teachers drew on their base knowledge when making pedagogical decisions.
This appeared to restrict the opportunities to include knowledge creation. Web 2.0 features, such as connecting with others, collaboratively developing ideas and understandings within teacher networks or classrooms by the teachers or students,
aspects of connectivist learning theory in the design of learning activities were notably absent.
The findings from this research identified knowledge, experiences and support that could influence how beginning teachers use
digital technologies within their teaching practice. The beginning teachers in this study were more likely to use
digital technologies to enhance student learning when they were: (a) familiar with teaching students using a 'trial and error, ask a friend' approach to learning, (b) experienced in the use of
digital technologies in specific
subject specialist areas, (c) supported by mentors with pedagogical content expertise, (d) given a sense of agency, (e) given
access to
digital technologies, and (f) able to apply
digital age learning theories and models to their…

▼ When I completed my undergraduate social studies teaching program, the job market appeared bleak in the coalfields of southwest Virginia. Coal, no longer king, had driven the economy for years. With its decline, my community barely managed to survive. My advisor at the time, honest and plain-spoken, told me that unless I obtained a license in special education, I would most likely not obtain a teaching job. Unlike many other areas of the country, in my hometown unless you could do other things like coach or drive a bus, a license to teach social studies was of little value. There was not much money and a new hire had to be willing to do many different jobs to prove his or her worth. Luckily, I had gotten my Commercial Driver License (CDLs) through a training program offered by the county school board, and I was consequently able to obtain a position, although not as a social studies teacher. I started my career in education as a special educator and substitute school bus driver. In this position I worked in an alternative education setting and taught vocational skills to secondary students with significant disabilities (in the institutional meaning of the word). From the start of my career, I aspired to become an administrator, so I enrolled in and completed a degree in Administration and Supervision. As I was working on that degree, I moved to the general education high school level, where I held a position teaching social studies and special education in an inclusive setting. Shortly thereafter, I obtained a job as an assistant principal. The part I enjoyed most about this position was working with and thinking about how to help teachers become better at their craft. At this point is when I decided to pursue a PhD in social studies education, so I could develop my interest into a body of research and eventually a career. Two years into my PhD program I was still grappling with who I was as a scholar. As I familiarized myself with social studies scholarship, I discovered that in my first position as an alternative education special educator, I was essentially preparing my students for the responsibilities of citizenship, which is the mission of the field of social studies (NCSS, 2013). Nevertheless, it was not until I started reading the work of John Dewey that I truly realized the complexity of what I experienced when I taught in the alternative education setting. That position allowed me to examine an element that I otherwise, would not have had the privilege to see; the complexity and intellect required for physical labor (Rose, 2004) and the inter-workings of true, vibrant, Deweyan democracy. Dewey’s work sparked a new interest in me and I started developing a deep-seated curiosity about how his theoretical underpinnings related to disability and democratic education. My interest in disability then caused me to ask other questions about social studies in relation to special education, which made me reflect on my prior experiences as a social studies educator. Although I had a license in special education, there…

▼ The expansion of technology connectivity and the pervasiveness of data in our society pose both challenges and opportunities for the government and the private sector. Big companies like Google and Facebook are in the forefront of successfully tackling the challenge of extracting meaning from this data deluge: building rich profiles of people and networks enable them to monetise and make profits by selling such profiles for targeted marketing purposes. For most organisations, though, the challenge of generating actionable intelligence from the available data sources is still daunting. In the government sector, one of the sectors that could benefit significantly from data-driven intelligence is that of Law Enforcement. However, the deficit of specialized personnel and tools which extract meaningful information from data (as Chapter~ ef{sec:intro} shows) is directly linked to weak investigation capabilities, ultimately hampering catching serious organised organisations. As the literature review shows, the available forensic tools are just starting to change the focus from improving processing performance to facilitating investigation and exploration. One example is the increasing adoption of domain taxonomies to describe data. This thesis addresses the capability gaps by demonstrating that analysts working in law enforcement would benefit from an data exploration tool leveraging specific semantic features. In addition to semantic search and integration of data (features already provided by many semantic data exploration tools), allowing the investigators to materialise classes, object properties and datatype properties could help them shaping their knowledge during the course of an investigation. Moreover, the ability of expressing knowledge in terms of semantic queries and rules could enhance information exchange between analysts. A prototype was developed to assess the feasibility of the idea and validate it with actual investigators. Their feedback after testing the prototype indicated that such computer-provided features could indeed support the reasoning of the human analyst, making cybercrime investigation more efficient.

▼ The present thesis formulates an approach towards ecstatic space in the context of a combined performance of kut, a Korean shamanic performance ritual, and digital practices. Here, the coined term, ecstatic space, is not confined to the mental state or spiritual sphere of shamans in a trance but indicates an alternative and metaphoric environment mediatised by ecstatic technology - a vehicle for conjuring the mythical worlds of kut via shamanic media including divine objects, dancing and singing rituals. This research also adopts digital technology, a modern approach for accessing imaginary virtual space through digital media, especially technical images - the technologically produced and programmed/computational images. Ecstatic space enables the creation of interstitial and fecund space situated between performer/audience reality and imaginary spheres, representing the technological aesthetics inbetween kut and digital performance. This enabling is theoretically and historically grounded in media and performance/ritual frameworks that are explored in the early chapters of the thesis. Ecstatic space contextualises through the careful exposition of Korean scholarship on kut, and shamanic performance rituals read and interpreted alongside international performance/cultural studies and media theories including Vilém Flusser, Marshall McLuhan, Guy Debord, Roy Ascott and others. My methodologies of creating ecstatic space are formulated by investigating the artistic potential of an interpenetrative relationship between these two technologies. The five core SUI (Shamanic User Interface) designs of kut are identified to outline an embodied understanding of the ecstatic technology. The techniques of digital performances are then examined in relation to SUI design, using as a case study of metakimospheres, a series of immersive performance installations exploring wearable architectures and kinetic atmospheres, and other digital practices. My methodologies are applied to and examined through my own series of ecstatic spaces, created with a shimbang (a master shaman of Korea) and five kut performers. Each of the proposed principles is explored and demonstrated through the production processes and presentations of four performances: the solo piece, Twelve Doors, discovers a wearable installations adopting Korean funeral kut; the theatrical piece, Leodo: The Paradise, describes a girl's journey to Leodo, delivering the key emotional conception of kut and exploring technical images; the projection mapping performance, Miyeoji-baegdui, produces its liminal spheres through the projection lights and interactive mapping technology; the participatory installation performance, Seocheon Flower Garden creates a divine garden by metaphoric mapping design and immersive performance rituals. The final production for this research, NEO-KUT, is the culminating event, generated by a comprehensive assemblage based on all four performances. The outcome of the research is the generation of alternative performance frameworks for the field of kut…

▼ This master thesis was conducted at a large Swedish manufacturer, where the perception on and challenges regarding digital transformation were studied. Digital technology is a gateway to numerous possibilities, simplifying production, altering products and creating new value offers. This study is focused on commercial digitalization, such as digital services and solutions that challenge or strengthens existing business models. A manufacturing firm, accommodated with the development of physical products is not adapted for the speed, flexibility and cross-functional collaboration which digital development requires. Though, the digital business area for a manufacturing firm is somewhat unresolved, with limited knowledge and guidelines as well as uncertain profitability. Reallocating resources from existing business towards digital development can thus be risky. Evidently, development of digital initiatives within a manufacturing firm requires high pace, support, structures and clarified roadmaps. Synergies from cross-market collaboration are important, but it can also increase complexity and tardiness in a large organization. Based on findings from this study, a manufacturer should alter its organizational structure to benefit their digital transformation. Speed should be prioritized over collaboration and traditional development should increasingly focus on business and consumer contact rather than technology. A common back end function should be increasingly utilized, developing digital technology for the whole organization, to ensure unanimity and simplifying development of similar initiatives. Digital initiatives tightly connected to products or existing business models should be developed within the corresponding functions. Support and inspiration towards digital development should derive from a holistic function that can aid and guide the whole organization. This function should also be responsible for digital initiatives that differentiate from traditional business. Increasing experience and proactively develop digital solutions will be important to stay ahead of competition and fulfill customer demands.

The following thesis discusses two central subjects: image and subjectivation, which will result in another three subjects, such as: work, which implies, in this thesis, an activity; clinic, which involves the formulations of the Clinic of Activity and the Critic and Clinical procedures; and last but no less important, digital technologies of image, in its potentials of aesthetization of the self and work. Situated in one Feminine House Shelter, destined to women who fulfill penalty in half-open regimen, the research had as general objective the creation of a field of experimentation of prison activity through the implementation of technological resources of digital videography used by the agents workers of penitentiary system. Thus, this thesis intend to analyze the device that was applied to provoke an exam of the situations of work in prison,…

▼ This study investigates the
digital lifeworlds of rural and urban 13- to 18-year old young people in an African, specifically Nigerian, context. Children and young people’s
digital lifeworlds and practices with technology in the global North is well researched and documented. By contrast, research focusing on their counterparts, particularly pre-teens’ and teenagers’
digital practices and participation in Africa is still largely limited and exploratory; and the field underdeveloped. This is more so despite the important role played by
digital communication
technologies in children and young people’s everyday life. Privileging the use of a mixed methods approach, this study conducted 16 focus group discussions with 175 participants and a survey of 380 respondents in public and private schools sampled across two of Nigeria’s major geopolitical zones. Supported by the child-centred approach and the domestication framework by Silverstone, Hirsch and Morley (1992), the study provides a multi-layered portrait of the ways in which Nigerian teens access, understand, work and play with and negotiate the
digital technologies that are available to them. The study also broadly pays attention to how young people constitute their
digital lives and the role played by contextual dynamics and community networks such as family, school and others. It was found that young people in Nigeria have a considerable access to and are predominantly using mobile phones and the Internet (via the ‘mobile internet’). However, this did not preclude the divides and marginalities between children from dissimilar social backgrounds. Teens’ significant outcomes with technology mostly centre around the need for communication and interaction with friends first, and then family. They also primarily use technology to cultivate and maintain their peer culture, for self-care, dealing with mental wellbeing, and as a critical resource for education and information-seeking. Nigerian children’s
digital practices are substantially shaped and at the same time undermined by various mediators or
digital gatekeepers. These include parents, teachers, guardians and older adults who are presented mostly as prohibitors and moral panic mongers. Issues such as the absence of
digital literacy and skill on the part of the children, their parents and teachers also limit the teens’ agency and
digital opportunities and result in unchecked risks such as access to pornography, meeting online with strangers/online grooming, distractions, identity issues/negative role modelling. Moreover, the opportunities and benefits of technology in children’s lives remain precarious, stratified and complex. This study attempts to place children’s
digital lifeworlds in its wider socio-spatial context and experience, contributing an important dimension to children’s
digital practices, especially as there exists a resonant paucity of and apathy towards research and scholarship in children and media studies in Africa. Techno-shaming children into silence, fear, scepticism, guilt or moral panic is a…

▼ This study examines the relationship between
digital infrastructure and the sustainability of
livestock systems in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe. The study aims to answer the question: Do
digital
infrastructure transformations impact the sustainability of livestock systems in rural communities?
By answering this question, the study contributes towards efforts to enhance food security in rural
communities, achieve Sustainable Development Goals (1, 2, 5 & 9) at grassroots levels as well as
achieve the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation. The study details
a
digital infrastructure intervention in Beitbridge and applies post-positivist approaches towards
the intervention’s impact assessment to develop recommendations on whether
digital
infrastructure interventions should be prioritized in rural communities towards improving food
security. The study was conducted in four villages of Ward 15 in Beitbridge and the target
population were livestock system actors. Using a mixed methods approach, data collection, with
the assistance of locally recruited research assistants, was conducted between 2015 and 2018.
Qualitative data were collected using community visioning workshops, key informant interviews,
focus group discussions and participant observations. Household survey questionnaires were used
to gather quantitative data. Data analysis was completed using a mixed methods approach. The
first objective of the study, using the Socio-Ecological System framework, was to characterise the
livestock system, explore livestock contribution towards household food security and determine
the livestock system’s sustainability. The study established that livestock play multiple roles
towards household food security contributing to different dimensions of food security. Households
sell livestock to generate income to purchase (access) food and include animal source foods in
their diets even though different consumption patterns of different livestock species were observed.
Apart from this, livestock also play sociocultural roles. However, the study established that the
livestock system is fragile, stemming from multiple factors such as poor governance and a lack of
appropriate infrastructure. Secondly, using Kleine’s Choice Framework, the study investigated the
potential of
digital technologies to contribute towards sustainable livestock systems. Study
findings suggest that
digital technologies can enhance the dimensions of choice of livestock system
actors. However, a lack of
digital infrastructure inhibits the integration of
digital technologies in
the livestock system. The potential of these
technologies and the fragility of local value chains has
however triggered interventions by government and non-governmental organisations including the
MOSMAC project in Beitbridge rural.

▼ Given the importance of Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) in almost every aspect of peoples’ lives, it became crucial to understand how far the
digital gaps go. This paper confronts this issue, most known as the
digital divide, addressing the role of a society income-level in the
digital disparities existing between and within countries of the European Union, thus allowing the analysis of both internal and external
digital divides.
We finalize our analysis grouping different income-level individuals belonging to the European Union member states to better assess their similarities and differences in terms of ICT access and use so that distinctive
digital profiles can be classified.

▼ Information and communication
technologies (ICTs) have been embraced by a number of public institutions in Masvingo province of Zimbabwe as part of the government’s drive towards e-governance and improved service delivery. This has resulted in the generation of large volumes of
digital records that are invaluable for strengthening accountability, transparency, decision making and service delivery. Preservation of these
digital records has been cited as a daunting task for most institutions especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The dynamic nature of information
technologies, obsolescence issues, as well as media degradation require
digital preservation strategies in place to ensure that
digital records remain accessible and usable over time. However, the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ) mandated to preserve all types of records is at the moment unable to ingest
digital records from public departments for preservation due to lack of adequate
digital storage facilities and skilled manpower. The records creating agencies in Masvingo have been left on their own to deal with the
digital preservation conundrum yet they are also faced with similar challenges. This qualitative study utilised the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model as the conceptual framework to explore the strategies for preservation of
digital records in Masvingo province in Zimbabwe. Data was gathered through interviews with officials from 13 out of 15 public departments that preserved
digital records in Masvingo province, augmented by observation and document analysis. Research data was manually processed and thematically analysed in line with the objectives of the study. The study established that the strategies for preservation of
digital records in Masvingo province were failing to guarantee their long-term preservation and security due to lack of supportive legislation, standards, policy guidelines, budgets, adequate and conducive infrastructure and skills. This has resulted in swathes of
digital memory being lost. The study recommended the adoption of trusted
digital repositories (TDRs) that are compliant to the OAIS standard, close co-operation between records creating agencies, NAZ, information technology (IT) experts and the academia in tackling
digital preservation challenges, and the development of preservation policies and guidelines, as well as continuous training and provision of budgets to cater for preservation of
digital records. In the absence of infrastructure, the NAZ should consider cloud computing for preservation of
digital records as an interim solution while observing legal obligations.

The ideal of inclusive society is based on principles of justice and social cohesion. It translates into a desire to include people at risk of poverty and exclusion, to reduce social inequalities and to encourage participation in the life of society. Faced with social inequalities, specific policies are implemented for people with disabilities. They translate into a principle of widespread accessibility to employment, education, built, transport, leisure, culture, digital technologies, etc. In our society where the uses of digital technologies appear to be the cure for all social problems (Proulx, 1990), what benefits can people with disabilities derive from the uses of these technologies? To answer this question, I went to investigate people welcomed in medico-social institutions in Brittany. I accompanied their use of digital technologies and in an ethno-methodological approach (Lapassade, 2000) and ecological of activity (Denis, 2009), I analyzed these uses as a social construct (Jouët, 2000). In this research we will see how the appropriation of digital technologies by people with intellectual disabilities or mental disorders transforms the negative representations they have of themselves and brings out a power to act with digital technologies that participate in their emancipation.

Since the "Plan Informatique Pour Tous" in 1985, digital technologies occupy an increasingly importance in education: digital textbooks, dynamic geometry software, learning games, e-learning, blended learning, MOOC, flipped classrooms, educational robotics, etc.The aim of our work is to show that some of these technologies can contribute to improve learning, boosting learning contents, emphasizing student motivation by proposing devices suitable for distance learning and personalizing learning paths. The stakes of these issues are important. The need to motivate students and personalize learning is more and…

▼ This thesis is an archival study which documents the discourse history of research that combines ‘technology’, ‘learning’ and the idea of ‘enhancement’. Over the years this area of research has been known by many names, including ‘Learning Technologies’, ‘e-learning’ and most recently ‘Technology Enhanced Learning’ (TEL). In the space of 70 years (from 1945 to 2015), digital technologies has shifted from the stuff of science fiction, to being woven into the very fabric of how we experience learning, work and everyday life. These significant developments raise two questions “What is Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Research?” and “Where does it come from?” These questions frame the study.
While there has been some analysis of these questions in the TEL literature, certain approaches to knowledge production have dominated these, resulting in constraints on what is possible to imagine as TEL research. This thesis offers an alternative analysis by drawing on the tools and concepts of non-deterministic inquiry from original text by Michel Foucault, and actor network theorists Bruno Latour and John Law. A common thread in this lineage is the mobilisation of conceptual resources to stage empirical accounts in which theory and analysis are inseparable. Building on these influences this thesis is shaped by conceptual resources for exploring how discourse and relational socio-material constructions, make ‘realities’.
This thesis makes a contribution to staging new ways of understanding “what TEL research is”, and “where it comes from”. It has contributed to new knowledge in four ways. First, by describing the discourse from engineering and how this is translated into “discourse materialised” in digital technology and learning design. Second, in accounts of “translation effects” where networks beyond the academy awakened to vested interests in funded research and what counts as ‘learning’. Third in describing multiple active discourses around ‘enhancement’ and illustrating how these are regulated by “forms of ordering”. Finally, by speculating on spaces that have been opened up for imagining new ‘realties’ the work in this thesis is positioned as an alternative enactment that interferes with the self-evident.

Technological devices have reached such a growth thanks to easy access to information. Therefore citizen operating capacity of information needs to be developed. Problematic questions that arise can be summarized along five lines: Do Digital technologies support a different (another) perception of the teaching / learning in Senegal? The project for settling multimedia rooms may bring students to a more frequent use for research on internet (websites)? Do new types of learning push students to use more frequently ict to increase their performance while acquiring knowledge on behavior changes in the sciences and in the context of the efficiency of the learning? Is learning becoming more efficient? Do technological innovations bring new skills in learners? Our research is based on the results of surveys of 146 students in high school and fifty teachers from the Dakar region who are using computer, tablet or mobile phone as support for teaching / learning. To understand their perceptions with the contribution of different technologies, we will use their answers to cinq axes : : Use of a computer or PC , tablet or other online devices; interest of the use of digital technologies for teaching / learning; the places of use of digital technologies and at last, use of online courses both for learners and teachers and correspondence with teachers. These results will be subject to a qualitative analysis of the responses that will inform us…

▼ College faculty in Ontario are using a variety of
digital technologies, at differing levels, in their teaching and learning practices. College administrators are looking to faculty to help meet the challenges associated with increasing enrollment and the need to deliver curriculum to a diverse student population with a range of learning needs who have unlimited access to information and communication channels through the World Wide Web. This research provides some understanding of specific motivating factors that have led many in community college faculty to adopt
digital and Web
technologies into their teaching and learning practices as well as those factors that may lead other college faculty to adopt similar
technologies into their practices. A modified decomposed theory of planned behaviour (DTPB) was implemented as a theoretical framework for this study and data collection was undertaken using a mixed-method approach using both quantitative and qualitative methods in an effort to fully realize and categorize the factors necessary in a faculty decision to adopt
digital technologies into their teaching practice. Findings indicate that
digital technologies are employed by faculty in some cases only to achieve efficiency in communication and administrative tasks favouring traditional teaching methods in their classrooms. Others are exploring and experimenting in exciting new ways with
digital technologies in an effort to enhance the learning experience for their students in and out of their classrooms. In addition to the varying teaching and learning beliefs held by faculty there are other factors that should be considered by college administrators when attempting to motivate faculty to adopt
digital technologies into their practices. There are also many challenges facing college administrators and faculty who should revisit traditional approaches to assigning workload, providing support and training, and the overall approach to teaching and learning, all of which carry with them financial and cultural implications.

▼ This research examines the relationship between the development of a portfolio of interactive digital techniques and compositions, and its impact on user experiences of time and place. It is designed to answer two research questions: (i) What are some effective methods and techniques for evoking an enhanced awareness of past time and place using interactive digital technologies (IDTs)? (ii) How can users play a role in improving the development and impact of interfaces made with IDTs? The principal creative and thematic element of the portfolio is the concept of the palimpsest, and its artistic potential to reveal visual and aural layers that lie behind the landscapes and soundscapes around us. This research thus contributes to an evolving cadre of creative interest in palimpsests, developing techniques and compositions in the context of testing, collating user experience feedback, and improving the ways in which IDTs enable an artistic exploration and realisation of hidden layers, both aural and visual, of the past of place. An iterative theory-composition-testing methodology is developed and applied to optimise techniques for enabling users to navigate multiple layers of content, as well as in finding methods that evoke an increased emotional connection with the past of place. This iterative realisation cycle comprises four stages - of content origination, pre-processing, mapping and user interaction. The user interaction stage of this cycle forms an integral element of the research methodology, involving the techniques being subjected to formalised user experience testing, both to assist with their further refinement and to assess their value in evoking an increased awareness of time and place. Online usability testing gathered 5,451 responses over three years of iterative cycles of composition development and refinement, with more detailed usability labs conducted involving eighteen participants. Usability lab response categories span efficiency, accuracy, recall and emotional response. The portfolio includes a variety of interactive techniques developed and improved during its testing and refinement. User experience feedback data plays an essential role in influencing the development and direction of the portfolio, helping refine techniques to evoke an enhanced awareness of the past of place by identifying those that worked most, and least, effectively for users. This includes an analysis of the role of synthetic and authentic content on user perception of various digital techniques and compositions. The contributions of this research include: • the composition portfolio and the associated IDT techniques originated, developed, tested and refined in its research and creation • the research methodology developed and applied, utilising iterative development of aspects of the portfolio informed by user feedback obtained both online and in usability labs • the findings from user experience testing, in particular the extent to which various visual and aural techniques help evoke a heightened sense of the past of place…

▼ The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the contemporary relation between Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and social inclusion. It deals with the development of a model of analysis taking into consideration the concept discussed about digital inclusion, to be applied afterwards in various acting projects in Bahia. Such inclusion may be comprehended in a spontaneous way (access and use of ICTs in which the citizens are dived with the entrance of our society in the information age) and in an induced way (technical, economical and cognitive categories). From this model of analysis the hypothesis that the digital inclusion projects have, in their majority, a technocratic emphasis, acting mainly when it comes to technical capital against others is being experimented. These capitals could bring a better visibility of what digital inclusion actually means, in relation to appropriation more than to determinism. The first step for designing this paper was a survey of the areas bibliography about many concepts of digital inclusion and digital divide, in order to identify how the approach of this issue has been defined so far. Then those projects that take place in Bahia and claimed to be called digital inclusion according to different concepts of the term and initiative of various sectors of the society (government, private companies, NGOs, universities, etc.), were analyzed. A pattern questionnaire and/or a research on data or institutional sites were used in order to interview managers as for the creation and executionof their induced projects.

▼ Recently, Brazil has defined its Digital Television standard. One of news in this model is the digitization of content transmitted by the broadcasters, which enables the convergence of applications and Internet services in interactive services for TV. In this sense, middleware for TV is the software which supports the implementation of such applications. The integration of 3D technologies in Digital Television environments extends the possibilities of interactivity and entertainment. Thus, the use of this technology can expand the range of research and business opportunities within the Interactive TV area. This work presents an architecture to support the execution of 3D applications on Digital Television environments. This architecture is based on DTV Brazilian middleware: Ginga. In this work are discussed strategies for integration of 3D technologies through execution and presentation environments of Ginga. Besides the definition of the architecture, this work presents a proof of concept for the new model presented as well as a performance analysis of the proposed solutions. Finally, a comparison is made between the solutions developed in order to determine which strategy is more feasible.

This thesis aims to share some experiments with digital technologies guided by a dialogical methodology, referenced in the Bakhtinian dialogism, from the Civitas Project, associated to the Laboratory of Studies in Language, Interaction and Cognition-Creation - Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The research context involves the events experienced by a third year class of the second cycle, of a State School of Elementary Education, located in a rural area of a municipality in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, in the region of Vale do Rio Pardo. The problem that led us to the development of this thesis was based on our intention to analyze the effects that a dialogic methodology could produce in the process of (re)signifying teaching and learning, combined with the use of digital technologies, in the context of rural education school. We seek in the language philosopher, Mikhail Bakhtin, the possible interweaves between theory and the empirical field, both in the dialogues between the protagonists of this thesis - the researcher, the teacher and the children - in our insertions in the investigated context, and in the organization of the research methodology and teacher…

▼ Digital technologies and networks begun integrating into the fabric of everyday life, mainly, since the 1980s. Throughout the late 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, we experienced the first stages of the process of domestication of digital technologies. It transformed our ways to inhabit and changed our perception of home, so that we "fit" in a digitally augmented world. In the meantime, significant technological innovations have altered the constitution and the operability of the household, triggering equally significant psychological and social adaptations. Architectural experimentation for the ideal house, since the late 1960s has been responding to the upcoming wave of technological changes with adaptations in the typology of the domicile and the augmentation of domestic aesthetics. The thesis constructs a historical and conceptual framework with which to consider and reflect on the social, but mainly technological and architectural transformations that have occurred, during the period in focus, that have led to the gradual realisation of a possible new way of "being at home", without spatio-temporal fixity, mediated by technologies. The thesis, also, at several points attempts to frame more specific areas of further design experimentation. The current research is conducted while the process of domesticating the digital is in progress, so the 'augmented home' encapsulates here, both a body of recent knowledge and experience on the ways to make more human habitable intelligent environments, and a reflective thinking towards the past and the prospect future of that process. The originality of the current research is that it assimilates into one body a broad and diverse literature on the area of interest, drawing sources from social sciences, philosophy, technology, architecture and art, so as to compile an informed and nuanced image of the 'augmented home' as the exemplary case of mediated and intelligent environment. The thesis aims to provide a common understanding of the field which can be shared by researchers across disciplines (computer scientists, anthropologists, architects, etc.) and designers.

2.0 (GoAnimate, Movie Maker e PowToon).

▼ Public sector institutions in Zimbabwe have embraced information communication technologies (ICTs) with an objective of promoting accountability, transparency and improve service delivery. This has increased the generation of digital records which are key in day-to-day business activities. However, the management of such records has been a challenge for most public sector institutions in most countries including Zimbabwe. Despite embracing ICTs, there have not been many changes to create a favourable environment for managing the resultant digital records. The study utilised the DCC curation lifecycle model to assess the management of digital records in selected financial services parastatals in Zimbabwe with a view of coming up with recommendations that would enhance their management. This multiple case study research adopted a qualitative research approach to collect data from four purposively selected financial services parastatals in Zimbabwe using interviews, document analysis and observation as data collection tools. Data were analysed and presented thematically in line with the objectives of the study. The findings of this study established that the general status of digital records management in the financial services parastatals is still in its infancy. This resulted in digital records being managed on an ad hoc basis. Parastatals under investigation still lack requisite tools for effective and efficient management of digital records. These include policies, guidelines and standards, adequate infrastructure and skilled manpower. Unless these issues are addressed, the management of digital records will not guarantee their long-term access and preservation. In addition, the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ), which has the legal mandate of regulating records management, has not been involved much in the management of digital records due to the lack of a legal and professional framework. Among other recommendations, the study recommended the crafting of in-house policies and guidelines for managing their digital records, procurement of adequate infrastructure and the recruitment of skilled and experienced manpower in digital records management.
