▼ This thesis argues that like the emergence of the technology of writing in antiquity, digital literacy is also a technology with tremendous cultural, economic, political and cognitive repercussions, and that these technologies partially inform the ways by which contemporary Western society is ordered. The thesis begins by offering a broad definition of ‘literacy’ that takes into account literacy’s potential as a technology to help shape individual understanding of the external world. The first chapter is concerned with exploring the implications of this definition of literacy by investigating how print literacy alters human cognitive function, which in turn affects society more broadly, with particular reference to the work of Ong and Dehaene. It suggests literacy’s influence on the human cognitive system affects the structure of narratives, and that literacy privileges certain modes of cultural consumption over others by reifying cultural artefacts as private property. The thesis goes on to investigate whether emerging digital technologies affect human cognition to the same degree as print literacy, and how this affect may be moderated by cultural forces in the form of digital literature conventions, as well as how digital literacy is taught. An interview was conducted with two University of Melbourne Library staff, who spoke about emerging digital pedagogic practices, as well as the difficulties faced by staff and students in successfully navigating digital systems. It emerged that digital literacy is not yet formally taught, and I suggest that this is one of the largest reasons for the negative conceptions of digital literature as a force of cultural degredation that this chapter explores. Finally, the thesis suggests that – with certain caveats – digital lierature is capable of deepening the conceptual abstration of thought enabled by print literature. It goes on to analyse the implications of this on narrative modes, as well as the economic and political ramifications of digital literature’s lack of physicality.

A contemporaneidade vem sendo marcada por mudanças em vários aspectos, em especial para o design. As últimas décadas inauguraram tecnologias digitais em que os recursos para captura, tratamento e reprodução de imagens alteram modos de desenvolvimento, produção e percepção estética. Este estudo refere-se ao design de superfície, especialidade do design, especificamente à estamparia têxtil digital. Tem como propósito investigar os recursos digitais voltados à estamparia têxtil como produtores de elementos visuais causadores de sentido e significado tendo em vista a relação: produção criativa, produto (aspectos subjetivos da estampa) e diferenciação. A pesquisa parte da abordagem qualitativa de caráter exploratório, por meio de referências bibliográficas, observação em estamparia digital selecionada na cidade de São Paulo e entrevistas a designers de superfície atuantes. Este estudo também propõe uma reflexão sobre alguns aspectos diferenciais e de subjetividade que as estampas permitem em produtos de moda em vestuário e decoração. Ao identificar e discutir possibilidades, potencialidades e limitações da estamparia digital nas áreas mencionadas, sugere-se contribuições para o design de superfície na criação de estamparia com fotografia a partir da demanda por diferenciação, em engineered print, tendo a peça impressa como suporte de arte e comunicação.

The contemporaneity has been marked by changes in various aspects, in particular for design. The latest decades inaugurated digital technologies in which the capabilities for capturing, processing and reproducing images changes modes of development, production and aesthetics perception. This study refers to the surface design, specialty of design, specifically the digital textile printing. It aims to investigate the digital resources intended for the textile printing as producers of visual elements that causes sense and meaning to the partnership: creative production, product (subjective aspects of print) and differentiation. This is a qualitative research of exploratory character approach, by means of bibliographical references, observation of selected digital prints in the city of São Paulo and interviews of the active surface designers. This study also proposes a reflection on some differential and subjective aspects that prints allows in fashion and decoration products. Identifying and discussing possibilities, potentials and limitations of digital printing in the areas mentioned, it suggests contributions to surface design in the creation of engineered prints from the differentiation demand, making the piece printed as art and communication support.

▼ Digital inkjet printing for textile printing represents a key development in clothing production. The application of inkjet printing for textiles follows the trends within both the printing and textile industries in regards to the demand for personalization in order to gain consumer interest and buying power. There has been much research done in the hopes of getting inkjet printed textiles to the public on a mass scale. However, very little is known regarding the consumer on their preferences when it comes to the image quality, look, and feel of digitally printed textiles. This study attempted to address this problem by finding out such preferences from not just the consumer but also the buyer of merchandise, specifically that of the boutique market, for clothing stores. There were two methods utilized within this experiment. The first is the use of structured interviews of boutique owners within the high end boutiques of Rochester, NY to find out what their general feelings on fashion, clothing and print on demand textile options are. The boutique owners were interviewed for approximately 30 minutes through the use of a formatted structured interview. The second part of this experiment was a psychophysical experiment. This part of the experiment dealt with the image quality preferences of the boutique owners and observers, that fell within a specific set of criteria outlined by the researcher, for inkjet printed textile samples. The observers were asked to rank order the different inkjet samples according to preference of image quality, tactile feel and for specific applications. This part of the experiment took approximately 30 minutes for the observer to complete and followed an experiment outline. It is through the qualitative and quantitative data gathered by both parts of the experiment that the researcher has attempted to answer the research objective, "what does the consumer prefer in regards to image quality and feel of inkjet printed textiles?" The findings of the experiment show that the consumer is highly aware of the image quality within their clothing and specifically favor textiles with high OBAs and tighter weaves of fiber. Depending on the application of a shirt or a bag the observer showed that tactile feeling is more important to the observer for clothing but image quality standards are willing to be lowered when dealing with accessories such as the bag as long as the sturdiness of the textile is acceptable. ▼ The objective of this Thesis was to determine the relative value of the cover design, price, and customer rating (e-book attributes) to consumers of science fiction or fantasy e-books. The motivation for this research was that the way we shop for digital books is different from the way we shop for print books. This led authorities to take positions as different as "[Book covers are] dead because the way we touch digital books is different than the way we touch physical books," (Mod, 2012), and "[Typographic covers] are one way to go," (Bridle, 2010). A conjoint analysis was designed to test the relative importance of the book cover. The attributes and levels investigated were: cover ("traditional attractive," "traditional unattractive," and "all-text" levels); price (2.99 and 6.99 levels); and rating (3 star and 5 star levels). Offerings comprising twelve combinations of these attributes and levels were presented to 96 participants and preference responses were recorded. Following data scrubbing and statistical validation, a total of 48 meaningful and statistically significant responses were selected as the sample population for conjoint analysis. Based on the results of the experiment, the traditional attractive cover was strongly preferred to both the traditional unattractive and the all-text cover. Even among participants who only viewed thumbnail images (24 of 48), 63% found that the traditional attractive cover added significant value to an offering, versus 8% who thought it reduced the value of an offering. Among participants who viewed full-size cover images (24 of 48), 79% thought that the traditional attractive cover added value to an offering, and no one thought that it reduced the value of an offering. On the other hand, participants who only viewed thumbnails were split on the value added by the all-text cover (6 negative, 12 neutral, and 6 positive). Among participants who viewed full-size cover images, the overall perception of the all-text cover was slightly negative (4 negative, 18 neutral, 2 positive). The principal conclusion of the conjoint analysis experiment is that book covers are emphatically not dead. Overall, participants in this experiment assigned 73% of the total value of the offering to cover design (compared to 17% for price and 10% for rating). This percentage is consistent with the Schmidt-Stölting et al. study of the German brick-and-mortar book market where book covers were responsible for 74% of the value created by the attributes cover, price, and rating (word-of-mouth). Digitalt textiltryck ger mig möjlighet att skapa textilier av hög kvalitet i små upplagor utan begränsningar vad gäller rapportstorlek och färgantal. Jag kan producera hållbara och praktiska textilier med en handgjord känsla. Dessa egenskaper ger tekniken intressanta möjligheter som en överbryggare mellan design och textil konst/konsthantverk. Det ger också stora möjligheter att anpassa formgivningen efter en specifik möbel eller miljö. Detta vill jag utnyttja i mitt arbete. Jag samarbetar med två konstnärer där de tillverkar möbler och jag textilier. Vår ambition är att göra gränsen diffus mellan det massproducerade och unika, mellan konst, hantverk och design. Vi arbetar på temat illusion/verklighet och utgår från en institutionsliknande miljö. Som kontrast till ursprungsmiljön använder vi oss av fantasi, drömmar och natur för att öppna rummet och sinnet. Genom att arbeta med min formgivning utifrån ett konstnärligt sammanhang hoppas jag kunna ge textilierna ett uttryck som uppmuntrar till tankar och associationer. Eftersom textilierna är digitaltryckta behöver jag inte göra avkall på kvalitet till förmån för en konstnärlig känsla. Motiven kan reproduceras på material som lämpar sig för att faktiskt användas i väntrummet eller sjukhussalen. Old institutional furniture comes to life in a new furniture piece. The project is a collaboration with the artists an furniture makers Maria Segersäll and Rasmus Sköld. Our ambition is to make the boundary diffuse between the mass produced and unique, between art, craft and design. We work on the theme of illusion/reality with starting point in an institution-like setting. In contrast to the original environment, we use imagination, dreams and nature to open up the space and the mind. With digital transfer print, I can produce sustainable and practical fabrics with a hand-made impression, textiles that can actually be used in the waiting room or hospital.

▼ Literary journals have always held a shifting and uncertain place in Australian cultural life, and in recent years, technological developments have both destabilised and provided new possibilities for literary journal publishing. While literary journals have a long history of adapting to challenges, material changes in publication media brought about by the introduction of digital publishing technologies have struck deeper than ever before, and prompted questions about journals' survival and relevance. These questions have, as yet, been the subject of little academic inquiry. This project aims to fill this gap in the knowledge of literary publishing in the 'messy', 'post-digital' publishing ecology, which is characterised by change and negotiations between media and their materialities. The research examines the role materiality plays in the literary journal field within this landscape, and asks how literary journal editors exploit the languages of different media to achieve their goals. In responding to these questions, the research employs methodology that combines interviews with Australian literary journal editors and textual analysis, complemented by a contextual review and underpinned by a theoretical framework based on the sociology of literature. The research argues that a combination of economic, technological, and cultural factors has given rise to a 'hierarchy of media' favouring print in the literary journal field. Within this hierarchy, editors' opinions and activities, funding constraints, and changing markets position print as a site of literary and symbolic value. This hierarchy can, however, be called into question when editors' perspectives are mitigated by those of readers and writers. Here, digital and print textualities and literacies are defined by difference, rather than their capacity to communicate literary or symbolic value. This thesis presents findings on the economics and culture of the Australian literary journal field, and the ways literary journal editors communicate through media and their materialities in the 'post-digital' publishing ecology.

I dag blir det allt mer viktigt för modeföretagen att sticka ut och komma med annorlunda erbjudanden för att kunna konkurrera med de andra modeföretagen som finns på marknaden. Konsumtionen har blivit en livsstil och vi skapar vår identitet och personlighet genom den. För människan är det viktigt att tillhöra en grupp, vilket bidrar till att det skapas en märkeshets, där till exempel skjortmärket talar om för andra vilka vi är och vad vi står för. Då konkurrensen har ökat är det viktigare för företagen att jobba med långsiktiga kundrelationer och aktivt jobba med att locka till sig nya kunder, samt behålla dem. I dag är det större konkurrens om kunderna, därför blir erbjudande företagen förmedlar allt viktigare. Lägger företaget ner tid på att få fram ett bra erbjudande och differentierar sig blir kommunikationen till kunden tydligare vilket i sin tur leder till att företaget får tillfredsställda kunder och högre omsättning. Ett företag måste kunna erbjuda något mer än enbart den fysiska produkten för att höja värdet hos kunden. Vårt huvudproblem och delproblem i uppsatsen är: - Vilka betydelsefulla delar bör ingå i GANT´s erbjudande till konsumenten för att åstadkomma positiva attityder och beteenden? - På vilket sätt kommunicerar GANT sitt erbjudande för att nå fram till konsumenten? Syftet med vår uppsats är att undersöka, diskutera och analysera vilka beståndsdelar som ska ingå i erbjudandet som riktar sig till GANT konsumenten. Syftet är även att ta reda på hur GANT kommunicerar sitt erbjudande till konsumenterna. Under uppsatsens gång kommer vi att tillämpa teorierna; kundnärhetens nycklar, marknadsmixen och kommunikationsprocessen. Vi kommer även använda oss av storytelling samt begreppen attityder och beteenden. För att kunna ge svar på vår problemformulering har vi utfört en webbenkätundersökning, en påstana intervju samt två personliga intervjuer med personer inom företaget GANT. Vi kommer att avgränsa oss till klädkedjan GANT och till deras dam och herrsortiment. I vår webbenkätundersökning och påstana kommer vi att avgränsa oss till kvinnor och män som någon gång har handlat på GANT. Vi har fått fram att de viktigaste delarna i GANT´s erbjudande som genererar positiva attityder och beteenden är; kvalitet, design och service samt att kunderna är villiga att betala lite mer för att få en bra produkt. Genom våra personliga intervjuer har vi förstått att GANT jobbar med en hög kundnärhet och service samt att de använder sig av traditionell marknadsföring.

Tratando do tema dos meios de comunicação e de seus usos, esta dissertação discute as possíveis transformações nas práticas de leitura diante do surgimento dos novos suportes textuais baseados na tecnologia digital. O estudo mantém seu escopo de análise nas práticas de leitura por lazer estabelecidas em livros impressos e em livros eletrônicos (e-books) que são consumidos em e-readers. Entre outros, discutem-se a questão da linearidade ou fragmentação da leitura, os hábitos de marcações e anotações, locais de leitura e posturas, preferências de suportes. Os dados analisados foram obtidos através de entrevistas com 16 leitores divididos em dois grupos, um de leitores de e-readers e outro de leitores do impresso. Os resultados foram estudados comparativamente e mostram semelhanças e diferenças nas práticas de leituras dos dois grupos, que podem ser associadas à nova tecnologia e ao leitor eletrônico, tanto quanto às intenções e motivos de leitura, ao formato do texto e às particularidades do leitor.

Addressing the subject of media and its uses, this work discusses the possible changes in reading practices on the emergence of new textual media based on digital technology . The study maintains its scope of analysis in the practice of reading for pleasure established in printed books and electronic books (e-books) that are consumed on e-readers. Among others, we discuss the question of linearity or fragmentation of the reading habits, of markings and annotations, local reading and attitudes, media preferences. The data analyzed here was obtained through interviews with 16 readers divided into two groups, one composed of e - reader readers and the other of printed books readers. The results were studied comparatively and show similarities and differences between these two groups of readers, which may be associated with the new technology and the e-readers as much as to the intentions and motives of reading, the text format and the particularities of the reader .

The area of this work is a combination of draping and printing. It strives towards the technique that dazzles the eye with illusions of more than one dimension. As a viewer you will believe that the prints are real drapings while they are flat surfaces. Today prints in fashion are categorized as placed prints or all-over prints, and generally created as a flat surface to decorate the garments. In this work the idea is to manipulate and challenge the boundaries of print and give it life through the body shapes and in the movement. Potentially this work could be an introduction to a new way of working with prints in fashion. This work could poosibly be presented as a new technique where placed- print and all-over prints comes together- called placed all-over prints. Also, it could develop into further techniques in using two-dimensional flatness and save fabric in using photography as an option to the real three-dimensional drapings. Furthermore could it mean savings in material as a conscious choice in the process ? This investigation explores two particular kinds of techniques, - print and draping, that are merged into one expression. The aims of this work is to find new ways of using print in combination with draping in dress and explore the possibilities to find a new technique to create interesting womenswear. To unite dimensions like two-dimensional and three-dimensional as a method of finding new forms and expressions. Through experiments with striped textiles the focus is to investigate the possibilities of greater visual effects on two-dimensional prints. For a depth and to exaggerate the directions in the fabric before translating it into a flat surface the striped textile can be a tool for further design. The striped textile has the potential to help the eye to understand the directions in the print and can be used in more than one dimension and color. To explore how to create 3D effect on 2D in print design through draping in dress is the aim of this work.
