▼ Accurate prediction and control pervades domains such as engineering, physics, chemistry, and biology. Often, it is discovered that the systems under consideration cannot be well represented by linear, periodic nor random data. It has been shown that these systems exhibit deterministic chaos behavior. Deterministic chaos describes systems which are governed by deterministic rules but whose data appear to be random or quasi-periodic distributions. Deterministically chaotic systems characteristically exhibit sensitive dependence upon initial conditions manifested through rapid divergence of states initially close to one another. Due to this characterization, it has been deemed impossible to accurately predict future states of these systems for longer time scales. Fortunately, the deterministic nature of these systems allows for accurate short term predictions, given the dynamics of the system are well understood. This fact has been exploited in the research community and has resulted in various algorithms for short term predictions. Detection of normality in deterministically chaotic systems is critical in understanding the system sufficiently to able to predict future states. Due to the sensitivity to initial conditions, the detection of normal operational states for a deterministically chaotic system can be challenging. The addition of small perturbations to the system, which may result in bifurcation of the normal states, further complicates the problem. The detection of anomalies and prediction of future states of the chaotic system allows for greater understanding of these systems. The goal of this research is to produce methodologies for determining states of normality for deterministically chaotic systems, detection of anomalous behavior, and the more accurate prediction of future states of the system. Additionally, the ability to detect subtle system state changes is discussed. The dissertation addresses these goals by proposing new representational techniques and novel prediction methodologies. The value and efficiency of these methods are explored in various case studies. Presented is an overview of chaotic systems with examples taken from the real world. A representation schema for rapid understanding of the various states of deterministically chaotic systems is presented. This schema is then used to detect anomalies and system state changes. Additionally, a novel prediction methodology which utilizes Lyapunov exponents to facilitate longer term prediction accuracy is presented and compared with other nonlinear prediction methodologies. These novel methodologies are then demonstrated on applications such as wind energy, cyber security and classification of social networks. Advisors/Committee Members: Kusiak, Andrew (supervisor).

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo acerca dos principais parâmetros que caracterizam o fenômeno da biestabilidade em dois tubos dispostos lado a lado submetidos a escoamento cruzado turbulento. A técnica experimental da anemometria de fio quente em canal aerodinâmico é aplicada na medição das flutuações de velocidade do escoamento após os tubos. As séries temporais obtidas são utilizadas como dados de entrada para determinação das funções densidade de probabilidade (PDF) usando um modelo de mistura finita, de acordo com uma função t de Student assimétrica e com o auxílio do método de Monte Carlo. Transformadas de ondaletas discretas e contínuas são aplicadas na filtragem das séries temporais para determinadas bandas de frequências e na análise do conteúdo de energia destes sinais. Através de conceitos de sistemas caóticos, é realizada a reconstrução do atrator do problema pelo método dos atrasos temporais, a partir das séries experimentais de velocidade, permitindo a determinação da dimensão de imersão e o cálculo do maior expoente de Lyapunov. Os resultados mostram a existência de dois patamares distintos de velocidade média nas séries temporais, correspondentes aos dois modos do escoamento, cada qual com números de Strouhal e funções densidade de probabilidade distintas. Uma análise conjunta das componentes axial e transversal do escoamento e suas PDF indicam as regiões no plano de medições onde o fenômeno se manifesta, sendo que reconstruções da trajetória filtrada das séries temporais para determinadas bandas de frequências apresentam características caóticodeterminísticas. O maior expoente de Lyapunov das séries experimentais é positivo, o que é um indício de comportamento caótico.

This work presents a study of the main parameters that characterize the phenomenon of bistability in two tubes placed side by side submitted to turbulent crossflow. The experimental technique of hot wire anemometry in aerodynamic channel is applied in the measurement of velocity fluctuations of the flow after the tubes. The time series obtained are used as input data for determining the probability density functions (PDF) using a finite mixture model, according to an asymmetric Student t function and with the aid of a Monte Carlo method. Wavelet transforms are applied in discrete and continuous filtering of time series for certain frequency bands and in the analysis of the energy content of these signals. By means of chaotic systems concepts, the attractor reconstruction of the problem is performed using the method of time delays from the experimental series of velocity, allowing the determination of the embedding dimension and calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent. The results show the existence of two different levels of mean velocity in time series, corresponding to two flow modes, each one with different Strouhal numbers and probability density functions. Значајне промене у међународним односима условљене окончањем Хладног рата јасно су указале на експланаторне и предиктивне слабости постојећих теорија међународних односа, што се очитовало у њиховој немогућности да ове промене на глобалном нивоу објасне и предвиде. Утврђивање узрока, последица и суштинске природе тих, као и актуелних промена у свету и даље је, као последица неусаглашености ставова, предмет бројних расправа теоретичара међународних односа. У настојању да се, сагласно дометима савремене науке коју карактерише све екстензивнијa интеракција различитих научних дисциплина, отклоне уочени недостаци и разреше постојеће дилеме, давањем аргументованих одговора на нека од питања која оптерећују теоретичаре међународних односа, у овом истраживању су сагледана досадашња искуства и могућности за примену теорије детерминистичког хаоса на међународне односе, пре свега на кризе и оружане сукобе као њихов најзначајнији сегмент у периоду по окончању Хладног рата. Унапређујући научне домете класичне физике, чији је утемељивач Њутн, теорија детерминистичког хаоса која се бави квалитативним изучавањем нестабилног апериодичног понашања у детерминистичким нелинеарним динамичким системима, почела је да се развија почетком 70‐ тих година прошлог века. Њен интердисциплинарни и синергетски потенцијал да, уводећи иновативан и конзистентан теоријски и методолошки приступ, створи основ за повезивање различитих научних области и на тај начин омогући истраживање бројних постојећих проблема на суштински другачији начин, заснован је на специфичним теоријским моделима и математичким алатима који се данас успешно примењују како у природним, тако све више и у друштвеним наукама. Теорија детерминистичког хаоса уважава системски приступ и нелинеарност као инхерентну одлику понашања отворених и динамичких система реалног света, за разлику од линеарног редукционизма, који је у претходном периоду био доминантан приступ у научним истраживањима. Своју примену ова теорија налази и у истраживању и утврђивању стварне природе и динамике процеса који се догађају у оквиру међународних односа. Примена теорије детерминистичког хаоса је, у овом истраживању, примарно фокусирана на безбедносни аспект међународних односа, као један од важних домена истраживања науке о међународним односима. Налази истраживања примене теорије детерминистичког хаоса на међународне односе у постхладноратовском периоду указују, пре свега, на потребу за преиспитивањем постојећег традиционалног оквира истраживања у овој области, али и за његовом доградњом и осавремењавањем кроз уклапање у оквире модерне науке. ▼ Abstract: Stringer (1989) was the first to suggest that a gas-solid fluidized bed may be a chaotic system, in which the irregular, yet deterministic, behavior is caused by its nonlinear properties. Since then, another way to analyze signals fluctuations in fluidized systems came to light: the nonlinear time series analysis commonly referred to as chaos analysis. It is a technique widely used in the signal analysis in fluidized systems, but not very common at national level. This type of analysis is based on the reconstruction of attractors embedded in a phase space and the study of the properties of this attractor. This Ph.D. Thesis evaluates the fluid dynamic behavior of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) operating under conditions of dilute pneumatic conveying using chaos analysis of chaos and also further analysis in the time domain. The signals obtained were measured by an optical fiber probe which generated time series of fluctuating electrical signals representing solids concentration. The chaos analysis showed that the systems studied exhibit chaotic behavior, by having positive Kolmogorov entropy for all situations. The advantage of this type of analysis compared with the usual tools in the time domain and frequency domain (Fourier spectrum) is that it considers the nonlinear behavior that exists in this type of multiphase reactor. From their results, it was possible to describe in detail the fluid dynamics of the CFB, allowing correlating the parameters found with physical phenomena such as cluster formation and breakdown, the gas turbulence, particle-particle and particle-wall interactions and feed maldistribution. This analysis has led to the identification of three distinct regimes: diluted, resulted from a more complex flow due to turbulence of the gas phase; concentrated, where the presence of clusters decreases the average path length of particles and consequently reduces the complexity of the system; and a third regime not yet published in previous works, regarding the extremely dilute conditions, where the increased flow of solids caused the increase in complexity. In this condition, the gas phase and the predominant flow is more predictable when there is presence of a few particles. Rudarsko inženjerstvo - Eksploatacija čvrstih mineralnih sirovina i mehanika stena / Mining Engineering - Exploration of hard mineral resources and rock mechanics

U ovoj disertaciji, cilj istraživanja bio je određivanje dinamičkih svojstava potresa izazvanih promenom naponskog stanja pri izradi horizontalnih podzemnih prostorija. Analiza potresa izvedena je sa dva aspekta – u prvom delu istraživanja izučavane su vremenske serije oscilovanja tla za vreme potresa, a u drugom delu vršena je analiza stabilnosti fenomenološkog Baridž-Knopof modela bloka sa oprugom. Vremenske serije oscilovanja tla proučavane su primenom postupka analize surogat podataka, kao i korišćenjem metoda analize nelinearnih vremenskih serija (primena teoreme o razvijanju skalarne vremenske serije). Analiza vremenskih serija izvedena je za potrese izazvane reaktiviranjem kretanja duž raseda usled napredovanja rudarskih radova, registrovanih na tri lokacije (rudnika) u Poljskoj: rudnici bakra Rudna i Legnic-Glogov, i rudnik uglja Gornja Silezija. Rezultati izvedene analize pokazali su da registrovane vremenske serije oscilovanja tla u pravcu sever-jug i u vertikalnom pravcu pripadaju nelinearnim vremenskim serijama, dok oscilovanja tla u pravcu istok-zapad pripadaju klasi stacionarnih stohastičkih procesa sa Gausovom raspodelom stohastičkog dela, koji mogu biti modifikovani nepoznatom nelinearnom funkcijom. Međutim, iako su oscilovanja tla u pravcu sever-jug i u vertikalnom pravcu nelinearna, primenom teoreme o razvijanju potvrđena je njihova stohastička priroda, i to malom vrednošću determinističkog faktora κ (<1) i niskom greškom unakrsnog predviđanja kod testa stacionarnosti. U drugom delu istraživanja, vršena je analiza stabilnosti kretanja nekoliko varijanti Baridž-Knopof modela, i to: Madariaga modela jednog bloka sa Diterih-Ruina zakonom trenja zavisnim od brzine i stanja, potom Karlson-Langer modela sa jednim i dva bloka i sa zakonom trenja zavisnim samo od brzine, kao i Beker modela sa jednim blokom, Diterih-Ruina zakonom trenja zavisnim od brzine i stanja i sa dve promenljive stanja. Analiza stabilnosti izvedena je numeričkim i analitičkim putem. Numerički je izvršena analiza stabilnosti Karlson-Langer i Beker modela, posmatranjem ponašanja rešenja u blizini ravnotežnog stanja, dok je u slučaja Madariaga modela, bifurkaciona analiza izvedena analitički (standardna lokalna bifurkaciona analiza), a rezultati su potvrđeni numerički u programskom paketu DDE-BIFTOOL...

▼ Competitive exclusion and coexistence of multiple pathogens in deterministic and stochastic epidemic models are investigated in this dissertation which consists of three parts. In the first part, the persistence and extinction dynamics of multiple pathogen strains for discrete-time SIS epidemic model in a single patch and in two patches are studied. It is shown for the single patch model that the basic reproduction number determines which strain dominates and persists. However, in the two-patch epidemic model, both the dispersal probabilities and the basic reproduction numbers for each strain determine whether a strain persists. With two patches, there is a greater chance that more than one starin will co-exist. In the second part, the stochastic spatial epidemic models with multiple pathogen strains for the above deterministic models are formulated as discrete-time Markov chain models and analyzed for coexistence and comptetitive exclusion. When infected individuals disperse between two patches, coexistence may occur in the stochastic model. However, in the stochastic model, eventually disease extinction occurs but it will take a long time. An estimate for the probability of disease extinction is obtained for the stochastic model. The distribution conditioned on non-extiction is compared to the solution of the deterministic model. In the third part, the dynamics of continuous- time stochastic SIS and SIR epidemic models with multiple pathogen strains and density-dependent mortality are studied using stochastic differential equation models. The dynamics of these stochastic models are then compared to the analogous deterministic models. In the deterministic model, there can be competitive exclusion, where only one strain, the dominant one, persists or there can be coexistence, persistence of more than one strain. In the stochastic model, all strains will eventually be eliminated because the disease-free state is an absorbing state. Generally, it will take a long time until all strains are eliminated. Numerical examples show that coexistence cases predicted in the deterministic models may not occur in the stochastic models.

La tribologie et l'analyse non-linéaire du signal est le sujet de mon travail de thèse. Dans la nature, les phénomènes linéaires sont l'exception ; rares sont les systèmes réels qui obéissent exclusivement à des lois linéaires. A l'opposée, les non-linéarités sont impliquées dans tous les processus naturels (réactions chimiques, mécanique, économie, etc.). Les systèmes frottant en sont un des exemples les plus courants, avec des applications très variées. Dans les systèmes de freinage, le frottement se trouve être à l'origine de nombreux problèmes d'instabilités. Les types d'instabilités auxquelles on a affaire dans ce cas sont celles des vibrations induites par le frottement. C'est justement sur ces instabilités que repose le principe Modalsens; un capteur- une lamelle- vient frotter sur un échantillon et ce frottement génère la vibration de celui-ci : le post-traitement par analyse de Fourier du signal vibratoire permet de distinguer des composantes liées au relief, au frottement et à la compressibilité des aspérités. Dans le cas de la méthode Modalsens, l'analyse de Fourier, qui est un outil linéaire, agit comme des lunettes aux travers desquelles est observé le signal et qui filtrerait toutes les composantes non-linéaires. Notre contribution s'inscrit dans cette optique: mettre en place une méthode performante d'analyse non-linéaire pour permettre de mieux appréhender l'analyse du comportement dynamique de Modalsens et de dégager de nouveaux estimateurs pour la caractérisation des surfaces textiles. Partant de là, les résultats obtenus nous serviront à proposer une modélisation du contact sur matériaux fibreux.

Tribology and nonlinear time series analysis are the main subject of my thesis. In nature, the Iinear events are the exception; few real systems follow linear laws exclusively. At the opposite, nonlinearities are involved in all natural processes (chemical reactions, mechanical engineering, economies, etc.). Systems involving dry friction are one of the most common examples, with a variety of applications. In braking systems, friction is found to cause many problems of instability. Types of instabilities addressed in this case are those of friction induced vibrations. The Modalsens method is precisely based on the exploitation of those instabilities: a sensor- a thin blade- rubs on a sample and friction induces its vibrations. Post-processing by Fourier analysis of the vibration signal can separate several components of the sample related to the relief, friction and compressibility of asperities. However, in the case of Modalsens method, Fourier analysis, which is a linear tool, acts like eyeglasses through which the signal is observed and that filters out all non-linear components. Our contribution is in this perspective: the establishment of an efficient method of nonlinear signal analysis to better understand the dynamic behavior of Modalsens and also generate new estimators for the characterization of textile surfaces. ▼ A variety of mathematical models ranging from very simple ones to complicated ones have been developed and analyzed in order to capture different phenomena associated with the spread of diseases. Even though none of these models behave exactly according to the observed clinical data, major features of disease dynamics can be captured merely by means of a simple model. The model introduced by Nowak and May [12] is such simple deterministic model of which a stability analysis has not been done. Our objectives in this endeavor are two-fold. The first objective of this thesis is to carry out a thorough analysis of the aforementioned deterministic model of virus dynamics while obtaining the related system of Ito stochastic differential equations which has not been obtained to date. The motivation for obtaining the related stochastic model is also two-fold. The first reason is the capability of stochastic models to capture the randomness associated with the disease dynamics. The second reason is while a deterministic model predicts a single outcome for a given set of parameter values, a stochastic model predicts an infinite set of possible outcomes weighed by their likelihoods and probabilities. Any mathematical model which describes virus dynamics, is not complete until it describes the immune response. With analogy to a predator-prey model, immune cells play the role of the predator while the virus plays the role of the prey. The immune response is triggered by encountering a foreign antigen. The role of the immune system is to fight off invasion by foreign pathogens. In this endeavor, our interest is a special kind of T cell, namely cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) which can also identify and eliminate infected cells. Then the immune response is incorporated with the aforementioned simple model of virus dynamics. This is done under three different assumptions on the CTL proliferation rate. This evidently results in three different models. The second objective of this thesis is to carry out a thorough stability analysis of the three deterministic models of virus dynamics with the CTL response while obtaining respective systems of Ito stochastic differential equations.

▼ With precise knowledge of the rules which govern a deterministic chaotic system, it is possible to interact with the system and change its dynamics. This research is part of a larger project, in which chaos control is used to improve the bubbling behavior of multi-phase chemical reactors. Chaos control requires models which capture the complete behavior of the system. If we replace the system by its model, or vice versa, we should not notice a change in dynamical behavior. We restrict ourselves to data-driven models, which learn both their structure and parameters from measured data. In cooperation with Robert Jan de Korte [1], we use a neural network model to control the chaotic dynamics of an experimental, driven and damped pendulum. The neural network provides a nearly perfect model for this system. The gas-solids fluidized bed is a much more difficult system, because it has a large number of state variables, while the pendulum has only three. To get a good predictive model, the neural network approach is improved with several enhancements: (1) Inputs are compressed by weighted Principal Component Analysis. (2) An 'error propagation" scheme is introduced, in the which the model synchronizes itself with the data. (3) The neural network is connected in parallel to a linear predictive model. (4) A new pruning algorithm removes unused nodes from the network. (5) A statistical test by Diks et. al. [3] compares the chaotic attractors of the model-generated and measured time series. The approach is succesfully applied to benchmark tests. But Diks' test reveals that during training, the correctness of the model's attractor jumps from right to wrong from one iteration to another. We investigate why this is, and present an example of a model which can predict the measured data with zero error, but yet has a very different attractor. This has far-reaching consequences. It turns out that the learning of an attractor from measured data is a very ill-posed problem, in which the data covers all available dimensions globally, but locally the data is confined to low-dimensional structures. When a global nonlinear model is trained on this data, it locally has too many degrees of freedom, and this leads to arbitrary dynamics. A Nonlinear Principal Component Regression (NLPCR) algorithm is needed, which locally detects and eliminates the unused dimensions. We develop the 'Split & Fit' (S&F) algorithm, based on a fuzzy partitioning of the input space. In each region, unused dimensions are detected with Principal Component Analysis (PCA). This algorithm is shown to keep an otherwise unstable model for a chaotic laser onto the desired trajectory. Meanwhile, Robert Jan de Korte found that deterministic prediction of gas-solids fluidized beds is not feasible. But the S&F algorithm does learn the attractor of another experimental reactor, a gas-liquid bubble column with a single train of rising bubbles [2]. ▼ The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the ambitious program of the foundation of developing statistical physics using chaos. We build a deterministic model of Brownian motion and provide a microscpoic derivation of the Fokker-Planck equation. Since the Brownian motion of a particle is the result of the competing processes of diffusion and dissipation, we create a model where both diffusion and dissipation originate from the same deterministic mechanism - the deterministic interaction of that particle with its environment. We show that standard diffusion which is the basis of the Fokker-Planck equation rests on the Central Limit Theorem, and, consequently, on the possibility of deriving it from a deterministic process with a quickly decaying correlation function. The sensitive dependence on initial conditions, one of the defining properties of chaos insures this rapid decay. We carefully address the problem of deriving dissipation from the interaction of a particle with a fully deterministic nonlinear bath, that we term the booster. We show that the solution of this problem essentially rests on the linear response of a booster to an external perturbation. This raises a long-standing problem concerned with Kubo's Linear Response Theory and the strong criticism against it by van Kampen. Kubo's theory is based on a perturbation treatment of the Liouville equation, which, in turn, is expected to be totally equivalent to a first-order perturbation treatment of single trajectories. Since the boosters are chaotic, and chaos is essential to generate diffusion, the single trajectories are highly unstable and do not respond linearly to weak external perturbation. We adopt chaotic maps as boosters of a Brownian particle, and therefore address the problem of the response of a chaotic booster to an external perturbation. We notice that a fully chaotic map is characterized by an invariant measure which is a continuous function of the control parameters of the map. Consequently if the external perturbation is made to act on a control parameter of the map, we show that the booster distribution undergoes slight modifications as an effect of the weak external perturbation, thereby leading to a linear response of the mean value of the perturbed variable of the booster. This approach to linear response completely bypasses the criticism of van Kampen. The joint use of these two phenomena, diffusion and friction stemming from the interaction of the Brownian particle with the same booster, makes the microscopic derivation of a Fokker-Planck equation and Brownian motion, possible. Montamos um aparato experimental para o estudo de comportamentos complexos na dinâmica de formação de gotas d\'água no bico de uma torneira. Desenvolvemos um sistema hidráulico em circuito fechado, e um sistema de aquisição de dados automatizado, que também controla a abertura da torneira (uma válvula de agulha). Utilizamos como parâmetro de controle a taxa de gotejamento estabelecida pela abertura da torneira. Os dados são séries de tempos {T n} entre gotas sucessivas para cada taxa de gotejamento. Utilizando diagramas de bifurcação, e reconstruções do espaço de fase com mapas de primeiro retomo Tn+1 x Tn , observamos duplicações de período, bifurcação de Hopf, crises interiores e de fronteira, comportamentos intermitentes, e movimentos quase-periódicos. Aplicamos anticontrole de caos, desestabilizando um ponto fixo estável com pulsos de ar comprimido sobre o bico da torneira. Também iniciamos o desenvolvimento de uma técnica para o controle de caos. Verificamos a existência de pontos de sela em vários atratores experimentais e, com a aplicação de dinâmica simbólica, observamos tangências homoclínicas associadas ao aparecimento de atratores de Hénon e bifurcações homoclínicas. Utilizando métodos de caracterização topológica, estabelecemos duas rotas para o caos envolvendo tangências homoclínicas, e mostramos que o súbito desaparecimento de um atrator caótico, em altas taxas de vazão, é devido a uma \"chaotic blue sky catastrophe\", apenas observada anteriormente num modelo de equações usadas por Van der Pol para simular a dinâmica cardíaca.

We assembled an experimental apparatus to study the dynamical complex behavior of water drop formation in a nipple faucet. We developed a closed hydrodynamic circuitry, and an automated acquisition data system, which also controls the faucet (a needle valve) opening. We have used as a control parameter the dripping rate set up by the faucet opening. For each dripping rate, the data are interdrop time series {Tn} between two successive drops. With the help of bifurcation diagrams, and reconstructed phase spaces in first return maps Tn+I x Tn, we were able to observe period doubling, Hopf bifurcation, interior and boundary crises, intermittent behaviors, and quasiperiodic movements. An anti-control of chaos was applied by perturbing a stable fixed point with pulses of compressed air on the nipple faucet. We also started the development of a technique to apply the control of chaos. The occurrence of saddle points was verified in some experimental attractors. By applying symbolic dynamics, we were able to observe homoclinic tangencies associated with the appearence of Hénon-like attractors and homoclinic bifurcations. By means of topological characterization, we established two routes to chaos related to homoclinic tangencies. We also observed, at high dripping rates, a sudden disappearance of a chaotic attractor due to a \"chaotic blue sky catastrophe\", just seen in a Van der Pol model used to simulate cardiac dynamics.

A voz tem sido objeto de estudos em diferentes áreas da ciência. Nas últimas duas décadas os pesquisadores demonstraram a presença do caos na produção de voz. O objetivo deste trabalho é estabelecer padrões visuais de sinais de voz humana através da técnica não linear de reconstrução de espaço de fase e associá-los com suas correspondentes análises auditivo perceptiva e acústica. Foram analisados sinais de voz humana de sujeitos de ambos os gêneros, na faixa etária de 19 a 39 anos. Foram gravadas as vogais sustentadas /a/, /e/ e /i/ do português do Brasil, com uma taxa de amostragem de 22.050 Hz. Os sinais foram analisados a fim de obter medidas acústicas (Jitter, Shimmer e Coeficiente de Excesso). Foi utilizada a técnica de reconstrução de espaço de fase para descrever as características de dinâmica não linear dos sinais de voz, e para análise perceptivo auditiva foi utilizada a escala RASAT. Os resultados demonstram que métodos de dinâmica não linear como a reconstrução do espaço de fase, parece ser uma técnica apropriada para análise de sinais de voz, incorporando os componentes caótico e determinístico da voz humana. É sugerido que análise da dinâmica não linear não substitui as técnicas existentes, embora possa aperfeiçoar e complementar os métodos de análise disponíveis para os profissionais da saúde, como fonoaudiólogos e otorrinolaringólogos

Human voice has been the focus of study for different areas of science. Researches in the last two decades have demonstrated the existence of chaos in human voice production. The purpose of this work is to use nonlinear dynamics techniques in the analysis of normal voices from healthy subjects and correlate them to traditional acoustic parameters as well as perceptual analysis. Human voice signals from healthy subjects, both male and female, ranging in age from 19 to 39 years old were analyzed. Sustained vowel sounds /a/, /e/ and /i/, from brazilian Portuguese were recorded at a sampling rate of 22,050 Hz and analyzed in order to obtain acoustic measures (Jitter, Shimmer and coefficient of excess EX). The phase space reconstruction technique was used to describe the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of voice signal samples. The results show, that non-linear dynamical method as phase space reconstruction seems to be a suitable technique for voice signals analysis, due to the chaotic component of the human voice. It is suggested, that non-linear dynamic analysis does not replace existing techniques instead, it may improve and complement the recent voice analysis methods available for health professionals, speech therapist and clinician

L'intelligence en essaim constitue désormais un domaine à part entière de l'intelligence artificielle distribuée. Les problématiques qu'elle soulève touchent cependant à de nombreux autres domaines ou questions scientifiques. En particulier le concept d'essaim trouve pleinement sa place au sein de la science dites des ``systèmes complexes''. Cette thèse présente ainsi la conception, les caractéristiques et les applications d'un modèle original, le système multi-agent logistique (SMAL), pour le domaine de l'intelligence en essaim. Le SMAL trouve son origine en modélisation des systèmes complexes : il est en effet issu des réseaux d'itérations logistiques couplées dont nous avons adapté le modèle de calcul au schéma ``influence-réaction'' des systèmes multi-agents. Ce modèle est fondé sur des principes communs à d'autres disciplines, comme la synchronisation et le contrôle paramétrique, que nous plaçons au coeur des mécanismes d'auto-organisation et d'adaptation du système. L'environnement à base de champs est l'autre aspect fondamental du SMAL, en permettant la réalisation des interactions indirectes des agents et en jouant le rôle d'une structure de données pour le système. Les travaux décrits dans cette thèse donnent lieu à des applications principalement en simulation et en optimisation combinatoire.L'intérêt et l'originalité du SMAL pour l'intelligence en essaim résident dans l'aspect générique de son schéma théorique qui permet de traiter avec un même modèle des phénomènes considérés a priori comme distincts dans la littérature : phénomènes de ``flocking'' et phénomènes stigmergiques ``fourmis'' à base de phéromones. Ce modèle répond ainsi à un besoin d'explication des mécanismes mis en jeu autant qu'au besoin d'en synthétiser les algorithmes générateurs.

Swarm Intelligence is from now on a full part of Distributed Artificial Intelligence. Its associated problematics meet many other fields and scientific questions. The concept of swarm in particular belongs to the science called the science of complex systems. This phd thesis shows the design and the characteristics and the applications of a novel type of model called the logistic multi-agent system (LMAS) dedicated to the Swarm Intelligence field. The LMAS has its foundations in complex system modeling: it is inspired from the coupled logistic map lattice model which has been adapted to the ``Influence-Reaction'' modeling of multi-agent systems. This model is based on universal principles such as synchronization and parametric control which are considered as the main mechanisms of self-organization and adaptation in the heart of the system. The field-layered based environment is the other important feature of the LMAS, since it enables indirect interactions and plays the part of a data structure for the whole system.
