▼ Money is a key element in people’s overall well-being (Abey & Ford, 2008). Young adults are behaving very differently towards finances compared to previous generations (Williams et al, 2010). In addition, young adults have little trust on financial institutions and no one to turn to for actionable advice (Deloitte Millennial Survey, 2019). Adults in their twenties and thirties are struggling with money, feeling overwhelmed and lost (Foundation for Economic Education, 2018). A gap in the market was found, where no current solutions fostered long-term behaviors for young adults towards a secure financial future. I wanted to use my skills as a designer to solve this paradigm involving young adults and finances. The goal of this graduation project is to provide guidance and support for young adults in changing their current money habits so they can ensure their future well-being. This societal issue regarding young adults and money is a shared problem in countries all over the world. For a better understanding of the relationship young people have, the context was scoped down: the project was based in Madrid, Spain and it was targeted for young adults belonging to this country. Under this context, the research of the project provided valuable findings which led to the final design. Those findings can be extrapolated to non-spanish young adults. Young adult’s current money habits and the desired financial behavior for a sustainable well-being were identified and mapped in two frameworks. The transition between both was possible through the creation of a new product- service-system. As a result, a product-service-system, named Volt, was designed. Volt crafts a new meaningful relationship between young adults and money and consists of a smart phone case, a related digital application and the system that sustains both. Through the phone case, young adults will progressively save by clicking a button and check their financial health thanks to a coloured light. The digital application will first help young adults to budget on their personal financial goals into vaults or buckets and keep track of their financial health and progress. After some digital application use, the digital application will provide young adults with actionable financial advice and the entrance to a community of young people with similar financial situation, so they can feel supported and have the peace of mind they crave.

▼ Although the various drivers of
innovation have been discussed extensively by
innovation scholars,
design has only recently been acknowledged as a possible driver of
innovation. This study builds on the study by Roberto Verganti (Verganti, 2008) on the
Design Driven Innovation process and elaborates on the existing framework for this process. The framework on the
Design Driven Innovation process suggests that upcoming innovations or changes in sociocultural context and technology are first picked up by interpreters who create visions. These visions are used by companies to create innovative products which are used by users in the sociocultural context. Therefore there should be a delay between the moment interpreters start discussing a topic and the moment it is picked up by the sociocultural context. This delay is equal to the time it takes a company to develop the vision from the interpreters into a product for the users. This consequence of the framework is tested in this study. The output from a group interpreters in the International Journal of Vehicle
Design is analyzed and compared to the output of the sociocultural context, which is represented by newspaper articles in the New York Times. Word co-occurrence networks are used to identify the topic of the discussion at a certain point in time. Of the 12 identified topics, 8 topics show the expected delays. The total of 18 observed delays average at 5 years which is consistent with the expected time a company needs to develop a product. The main conclusion in this study is that an analysis of interpreters in an interpreter network may indeed provide useful information on changes in the sociocultural context and could thus be used to anticipate change. However, the limited amount of observed topics make future research in this field necessary.

design objetivaram
construção de novos significados como meio fundamental para a competitividade;

▼ Speech is the most natural and most comfortable method of communication for most people (Tadeusiewicz, 2010). So why not use speech for digital communications between company and customers? This graduation assignment aimed to examine this by questioning how voice technology could possibly enhance the dialogue between TUI and its customers. Voice technology is a rather new technology and has not been fully adopted yet by the public. It was found that the technology should be implemented in gradual steps. This way, company and customer can get used to the technology. Also, starting off small and simple enables stimulation of the adoption (Rogers, 1995). The Brand
Driven Innovation model (Boeijen et al., 2013) was used to structure this project and in order to maintain a high focus on the relationship between company and customer. It was found that the company could highly improve the information it provides to the customer throughout their journey. Within the entire customer journey, the “prepare to go” phase was chosen as a scope due to it not being of critical harm to the rest of the journey. After all, the technology is relatively new and, therefore, brings some risks with it. Experiments aimed at validating assumptions showed that customers are looking for information while preparing for their journey. They are mainly interested in obtaining information about activities (excursions) and dining options (e.g. restaurants). A link with Musement was made, a company that was acquired by TUI and is designed around providing information about both activities and dining options. The voice-based solution, therefore, consists of an integration of the current Musement voice application into one that suits the purpose of TUI and was named the TUI Tour Guide 1.0. As said, the technology needs gradual implementation and therefore a stepping stone (MVP) was designed: Holiday Trivia. A voice application with which users can learn what type of vacationer they are and obtain holidays and deals tailored to their vacationer type. This stepping stone was designed using a process tree flow to structure the dialogue, which highly limited the errors in the conversation as was found by user tests. Both Holiday Trivia and the Musement integration (TUI Tour Guide 1.0) are steps towards the future vision, in which a TUI voice-based tour guide provides information along the entire journey in a personal and transparent way. In order to get there, a roadmap has been established in which the voice-based application is expanded step by step.

▼ Design has been framed as a driver of innovation through product meaning, but it falls short when it comes to dedicated knowledge and methods directly applicable into design practices. Structured by Design Research Methodology (DRM) (Blessing and Chakrabarti 2009), this thesis combines exploratory research with practice-based design research. This thesis presents a literature review covering design studies, psychology, cognitive semantics, linguistics, marketing, innovation management and new product development. Together combined these have been used to develop a new framework of 'product meaning' consisting of 4 definitions: meaning as conceptualisation, as importance, as intention, and as representation. The framework has been used to demonstrate that different types of meaning are utilised throughout different stages of product development. Meaning as conceptualisation is identified as fundamental, and the most suitable, for design practice engaged in product meaning innovation. Three strategies of innovation of product meaning through product re-purposing are identified. Furthermore, from the field of cognitive science, theories and methods such as concept categorisation, thematic roles and conceptual blending are used as analysis tools for the selected 6 examples of innovative new meaning products. The structure of meaning innovations has been identified to consist of seven distinctive elements. Ten common characteristics of new meaning innovations are identified and, additionally, an exploratory method of current meanings of products is presented. Moreover, through engagement in practice-based design research a new meaning-driven design process has been developed. The findings from this research have been combined into a new design platform for an approach to meaning innovation and evaluated with experienced designers.

▼ Companies understand the importance of employees’ engagement in its
innovation capability. The contact between employees and customers is a great way to spark new opportunities for ideas relevant for customers (Kelly & Storey, 2000), they have in-depth and highly context-dependent operational knowledge and have creative potential. They make an interesting often unused source for
innovation potential. In the case a single employee or a small team of employees that are not assigned to the task are indeed the sources of the generation and implementation of such new ideas, products and processes, it can be called employee-
driven innovation (EDI). Many organisations, therefore, try to engage employees and facilitate employee-
driven innovation to increase its
innovation capability. With the current global trend of servitization, which is the process to extend the customer relationship by bringing value also after a product purchase, companies will invest in the development of services. When companies would like to increase their
innovation capability through employee-
driven innovation, employees will therefore likely be expected to create ideas for services in which they are often not educated or trained. One of the challenges for a company in employee-
driven innovation is to create and sustain a company culture and environment that generates the right conditions for this. Especially if this should be supportive of new service development, as services have intangible qualities that make it harder to test the actual value for the customer even with educated staff. Hence, the first aim of this thesis is to understand the challenges and effective ways of organising employee-
driven innovation for new service development. Through a literature review and participatory
design sessions with employees from a service solution provider, I created an approach that displays what the managerial, organisational and employee roles can do to facilitate employee-
driven innovation in three parallel steps. In addition, TOPdesk, an ESM service solution provider, was also interested in increasing its
innovation capability through employee-
driven innovation. They captured their interest in a company objective that aims to create profit from a new market, coming from employee initiatives. I found that TOPdesk employees need guidance and support in their employee initiatives, to enable them to create and develop new service ideas. Therefore, the second part of this thesis is about creating a
design toolkit that fulfils these needs and an implementation
design roadmap in order to facilitate employee-
driven innovation at TOPdesk. The employee initiative toolkit is a structured approach that guides and enables employees with new service ideas to effectively explore its value with the goal to convince the management team it should become a new service for TOPdesk. Through covering idea selection criteria, aspects of a business plan and pitch canvas, employees are able to do this. The purpose of this toolkit is to increase the effectiveness of…

▼ This thesis presents a design investigation into how traditional technology-orientated markets can use design led innovation (DLI) strategies in order to achieve better market penetration of disruptive products. In a review of the Australian livestock industry, considering historical information and present-day trends, a lack of socio-cultural consideration was identified in the design and implementation of products and systems, previously been taken to market. Hence the adoption of these novel products has been documented as extremely slow. Classical diffusion models have typically been used in order to implement these products. However, this thesis poses that it is through the strategic intent of design led innovation, where heavily technology-orientated markets (such as the Australian livestock industry), can achieve better final adoption rates. By considering a range of external factors (business models, technology and user needs), rather than focusing design efforts solely on the technology, it is argued that using DLI approach will lead to disruptive innovations being made easier to adopt in the Australian livestock industry.
This thesis therefore explored two research questions:
1. What are the social inhibitors to the adoption of a new technology in the Australian livestock industry?
2. Can design be used to gain a significant feedback response to the proposed innovation?
In order to answer these questions, this thesis used a design led innovation approach to investigate the livestock industry, centring on how design can be used early on in the development of disruptive products being taken to market. This thesis used a three stage data collection programme, combining methods of design thinking, co-design and participatory design.
The first study found four key themes to the social barriers of technology adoption; Social attitudes to innovation, Market monitoring, Attitude to 3D imaging and Online processes. These themes were built upon through a design thinking/co-design approach to create three ‘future scenarios’ to be tested in participant workshops. The analysis of the data collection found four key socio-cultural barriers that inhibited the adoption of a disruptive innovation in the Australian livestock industry. These were found to be a lack of Education, a Culture of Innovation, a Lack of Engagement and Communication barriers. This thesis recommends five key areas to be focused upon in the subsequent design of a new product in the Australian livestock industry. These recommendations are made to business and design managers looking to introduce disruptive innovations in this industry. Moreover, the thesis presents three design implications relating to stakeholder attitudes, practical constraints and technological restrictions of innovations within the industry.

▼ Scania is one of the world-leading manufacturers of trucks and buses for heavy transport, combined with an extensive product-related service offering. This thesis proposes a data-
driven service
innovation strategy to leverage the potential of data and data intelligence for Scania's future business in the truck segment. The freight transport industry is significantly disrupted by trends such as digitalization, automation, connectivity and electrification. These trends will restructure the value network of the freight transport industry by creating new ways of doing business. Enabled by connectivity and data intelligence, vehicle data can be aggregated and processed to provide data insights that benefit the logistics chain. It unlocks new opportunities for Scania to deliver new digital services
driven by data, extending beyond their traditional business model. Therefore, to fully exploit the possibilities of the value pools created by data, the thesis aims to create an
innovation strategy to define Scania's new market positions and customers and create a coordinated roadmap for Scania's future data-
driven services. This strategy has been developed by analyzing the internal environment, the value network of the freight transport industry, the logistics chain, market trends and technologies. Insights from research have been synthesized to envision the future scenarios of the value network and define Scania's strategic direction. In the short term, Scania delivers digital logistics services to shippers and carriers, enabling them to achieve efficient and sustainable transport operations collaboratively by data sharing. In the long term, Scania aims to offer Logistics as a service with autonomous vehicles directly to shippers by partnering with a digital logistics broker. A future vision has been created for Scania's service development by 2030: "Scania as a sustainable transport ecosystem enabler, providing customers collaborative and optimized logistics solutions powered by open
innovation to drive their business forward." To reach the future vision, four main service systems were designed incrementally and related to other technologies:1. Connecting & Sharing: Enable visible and controllable transport operation for both carriers and shippers through seamless data orchestration and sharing.2. Optimizing transport operations: Delivering sustainable and efficient logistics and transport management services to customers via data-
driven decision making and integration of digital logistics brokerage platforms.3. EV transition Acceleration: Accelerating the transition to electrified vehicles by providing customers effortless transport experience with smart routing and power charging services.4. Logistics as a Service with autonomous vehicles: Transforming towards the transport ecosystem enabler by providing Logistics as a Service with autonomous vehicles. The strategy is presented in the format of a roadmap with all the elements such as trends, user values, service systems, technologies and business. By following this path…

▼ Virtual reality technology has captured the human imagination since before the first ceiling mounted glasses were invented in the 1960’s. Curiosity towards seeing what we can’t see and experiencing what we can’t experience, is one of the drivers behind societal and scientific progress. In 2012, the technology saw a new phase of development start. Now, professions like architecture and urban design, professions that try to communicate ideas, have started to implement the technology. The entertainment industry is running with it. The first commercial sets have been a success. This time, it seems that VR is here to stay. What happens then with the environment that we can see? This question becomes relevant now. Cyberpunk - a submovement of science fiction - always shows us the dystopian image. The metropole becomes neglected as people leave behind the physical world and loose themselves in the digital. These works of fiction have functioned as a red flag and have inspired this thesis. Within, the discussion is not whether or when VR is going to feature in the daily lives of people - the question is what the effect will be. Through the lense of VR development, current developments in the urban public space are scrutinized. The objective: to make sure that neglecting the city is not the path humanity will end upon.

▼ Voice-technology is, as the name entails, technology that enables the exchange of information through voice. As this technology is currently growing in adoption and usage of customers, the popularity at organizations and researchers is increasing noticeably as well. Normally new intelligence is associated with impressive high-end capabilities. However, this technology is still in its early stages of development because, although humans may be more capable of speech-interaction, the machine now needs to learn from its users. It is important to understand the principles rooted in human communication in order to understand user’s underlying expectations of conversational interfaces and to design for a desired user experience. Conversational interfaces are creating opportunities for new touchpoints between brands and its customers. It adds a new dimension to a customer’s experience and interaction with brands and their services. Brands need to decide how to behave as one of the partners in the collaboration driving this machine-driven conversation. On top of that, a new challenge is found in how to expose a unique identity without any visual and tangible elements to rely on. Alongside a case study for the lifestyle brand Rituals, a brand-driven strategy is proposed to design a voice-interaction service integrated with personified voice-identity. It is of great importance to form a unique and recognizable position within speech-technology corresponds to the existing brand in order to engage customers with a relatable personality. The Rituals case study is used to extrapolate general guidelines, set out in a design kit. It functions as a practical tool to guide organizations in the innovation process towards a voice-interaction service. This project has found a branded identity in the context of voice-technology, defined by an unique fusion of five components. The brand functions here as an overarching connecting factor.

▼ Today, the business-led conversation about integrating
and leveraging “
design thinking” is growing in popularity and

This is a complex challenge; one that impacts every area of an

The world is undergoing change and the disintegration of the old economy is becoming evident. Production is moving to low cost countries and competition is growing fierce. In order to stay competitive, companies around the world recognises the need to become more innovative. In order to achieve this it is imperative to balance and compliment the linear business thinking that still rule the managerial body. Leading research in this area suggest that the key to innovation in business development lies within the creative thinking of the design field. This paper describes a joint master degree project that seeks to test these theories and develop methods and protocols to put them into practice. So the question is, what happens when one use industrial design as a tool to innovate business in the Creative Economy? The research group consists of four industrial designers from Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and four marketing students from School of Business, Stockholm University. During the project we applied action research and introspection in a case study where new business strategies where formulated for a live company as our empirical base. The process proved more difficult but also more rewarding than initially anticipated and resulted in several new potential strategies for the company while providing valuable insight and experience in interdisciplinary team work in this field. This paper presents suggestions to how design thinking and business thinking can…

▼ Premium international goods are sought after by quality-concerned Chinese consumers who are increasingly turning towards cross-border e-Commerce and social media platforms with the expectation to avoid local food safety scares. Online retail of foreign brands however, does not guarantee protection against fraud. Counterfeit products are now commonly placed and are marketed equally besides the genuine items exposing consumers to vulnerabilities and heightening their perceived risk prior to purchase. Products are forensically scrutinised on multiple levels of security and further judged on authenticity.
Australian Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which make up 97% of all Australia’s workforce, are not well represented in the encouraged export trade opportunities as they fear export pathways that are increasingly complicated and changing. Compounding the problem is SMEs limited investment funds to upscale with expensive anti-counterfeiting solutions that may not clearly deliver on counterfeiting deterrent effectiveness and appropriateness to build consumer’s ‘initial trust’.
This paper seeks to shed light on three key principles of the food counterfeiting phenomenon. Firstly, to map literature on food fraud, packaging counterfeiting with a focus on deceptive counterfeiting operations and tactics. Secondly, to investigate the unique trust relationship formation between risk adverse consumers and emerging, unfamiliar SME brands. Finally, the research will appraise anti-counterfeiting responses, from two perspectives: technological and design-driven, with a primary focus on cost-effective deterrent strategies catering to SMEs.
Design/methodology/approach – A Mixed Methods approach was adopted to integrate the Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology and co-creation strategies to later inform the larger online survey, triangulating the overall findings through qualitative and quantitative studies. Comparisons were made between Consumer and Industry insights as well as a cross-cultural study between Australia (low risk) and China (high risk) representing diverse levels of Risk Societies. The three studies investigated trust influences and drivers of Security Elements applied to food packaging founded on Technology and/or Design applications. The studies consisted of: (1) a Qualitative Multivariate Analysis, identifying the 5 Design-Driven Influencing Factors (DDIFs), (2) an Anti-Counterfeiting Workshop Model testing 30 security elements through the Case Study methodology, and finally (3) a Quantitative Online Study comparing two populations trust propensities and expectations of security elements on food packaging.
Overall, the research identified that consumers acceptance of anti-counterfeiting elements can be strongly influenced by DDIFs that are appropriate for the food category (Fitted), multiple authenticity checks (Layered), connected to the country of origin (Identity Links), presents a reward attraction (User-Purposed), and technologies use a holistic design (Embedded). Design-Driven elements were…

▼ Healthcare in Sweden are in need of a drastic change to meet the requirements of highly developed societies, and information technology is seen as an essential part to get there. However, the Swedish healthcare have to challenge their traditional innovation approaches as well. For example, it has become more common to engage patients in the innovation process through web-based platforms. We have been focusing on an approach called co-creation by studying a workshop, in which potential users and other stakeholders are cooperating creatively to come up with innovative solutions in order to improve healthcare practice. Our findings suggests that co-creation may increase the mutual understanding between different stakeholders, for example healthcare professionals and IT developers, enable horizontal learning through and outside the organization and also to raise concepts and actions that are responding to healthcare needs. However, we have found important challenges in bridging barriers that may occur when gathering people of different competencies, and involving proper participants that are representative of their groups.

▼ The transgression of the boundaries between disciplines is one of the main consequences of the progress of the Knowledge Society, and the simultaneous role of technological
innovation as a factor and transformation framework is evident. This has led to a metamorphosis in society itself, establishing new models of behavior in a stream of technological
innovation that is plural, multicultural and multidisciplinary. In this propagative and faceted scenario, the engines of
innovation are no longer confined exclusively to the intrinsic progress of the technology itself, but also come into play those deliberate changes in the meaning of the product. As a consequence, the
design of intelligent products and solutions represents a complex activity, involving the coordinated push of elements belonging to different fields and different ways of understanding reality.
In the analysis of this reality, the term "x-disciplinarity" is coined as a compromise between all possibilities of collaborative work, immersed until now in a terminological confusion of variants derived from the indistinct use of prefixes (multi-, inter-, cross-, trans-, among others). X-disciplinarity is studied as an obvious principle of
innovation, but taking into account that bringing together professionals from different disciplines in the same process does not guarantee the achievement of a truly successful solution. An effective implementation of the collaborative philosophy has remarkable limitations, such as communication difficulties, devaluation or lack of trust between disciplines, ignorance of the overall process, conflicts of interest, or different motivations and responsibilities regarding the project.
This doctoral thesis approaches the
subject from a
design perspective, proposing as hypothesis its strategic application as a means, facilitator and engine of synergies between disciplines, as well as its potential in all phases of the technological product
design process. This dual hypothesis is based on two paradigms: on the one hand, the need for the application of the
design to be the result of a reasoned and defined ad hoc strategy and on the other, the need to train x-disciplinary professionals from the academic base.
The result is expressed through new models of
design processes, in the form of methods, methodologies and
design tools. Specifically, it presents the
design, development and validation of four complete methodological proposals – getGo, Community, Maximum Common Scenario and Xassess - and two teaching proposals, one of which - Common Understanding Area - is later derived into a
design tool. This has also led to reflection and the development of new theoretical concepts such as Relational Needs, which, through its transversality and adaptability to methodologies and contexts, also becomes a
design tool in itself. We can talk about a total of eight individualized contributions, launched and evaluated - reproducing the subtitle of the thesis "surfing disciplines", with a total sample that includes 446 people, including professionals…
