▼ This study sought to investigate the process of internationalisation strategies pursued by
Kenyan SMEs. The study also was aimed at establishing how business strategies interact with
and impact upon the internationalisation decisions of SMEs. Thus the research therefore was
to find out strategies used by Kenyan SMEs firms in internationalisation. The research
focused on small and medium enterprises.
A review of literature to establish if similar studies had been carried out in the past. A
structured questionnaire was used too collect the relevant data which will be used to
summarize the findings and draw conclusions. The respondents responded positively and the
data collected was used to draw meaningful conclusions
Descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, percentages, and means were presented
using tables and graphs. Qualitative data from open questions was analysed through narrative
analysis and presented through prose.
The study established that small and micro enterprises used exporting and franchising as a
methods of entering the foreign or export market. In relation to the most popular process
used, the study also concluded that the respondents approached internationalisation of their
operations using process nine.
The study also concluded that the small and micro enterprises used the strategy of price
below competitors; this strategy is likely to work out properly because most businesses
compete on the prices. The study also established that among the back up after sales services, the majority of the
respondents gave warranty to their customers, free delivery to their customer after sales.
There was no dedicated team involved in research and development, this was mainly because,
the sample of businesses chosen were mainly small, they were therefore not able to have a
dedicated team of researchers.
The study concluded that a deeper insight into the activities of internationalisation by small
and micro enterprises ought to be undertaken adequately. Specific areas of research should
revolve around the challenges experienced in international market and the strategies
employed in dealing with the challenges

This thesis refers to the teaching of the 4th chapter of the Descriptive Statistics with the computer. For the best and most complete design of teaching, we create a questionnaire which completed from 19 students of High School, Private School Sotirchopoulos, school year 2012-2013. They had already completed the chapter of Descriptive Statistics with traditional teaching. In the questionnaire we wanted to test what students had understood, what was difficult for them, what they remembered without repetition and how many knew the Microsoft Excel. According to the results, we constructed a teaching plan.

▼ INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of obesity is increasing in the United States and globally, and impacts many aspects of health. To understand the contribution of body weight to chronic diseases such as diabetes, it is necessary to characterize secular and longitudinal weight trends prior to evaluating the weight effects that may result from medical interventions. The cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicates that mean body weight in the adult population increased from 152 lb (69 kg) to 181 lb (82 kg) between 1959 and 2008. However, there are no previously published studies on secular or longitudinal weight trends in a veteran population.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to describe secular and longitudinal trends in body weight for a large population of male and female individuals with and without diabetes in the Veterans Administration (VA) healthcare system, the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States.
METHODS: Retrospective observational analysis of data from VA facilities throughout the United States, in patients who had at least 4 outpatient visits within any consecutive 4-year interval during 2000–2014. The dataset included men and women with and without type 2 diabetes. The primary outcomes were longitudinal trends in body weight stratified by birth cohort, sex, and diabetes status.
RESULTS: A total of 4,680,735 unique patients, 1,666,346 with diabetes, were included in the analysis. Regressions were performed on the patient-level data and segmented by birth cohort. A total of 176,034,543 weight observations were included in the analysis, with a median of 15 to 36 weight observations per patient in individuals without diabetes, and a median of 22 to 49 weight observations in individuals with diabetes across birth cohorts. In the year 2000, the y-intercept for the regression equations indicated a mean body weight for men without diabetes of 188 lb (85 kg), for women without diabetes of 166 lb (75 kg), for men with diabetes of 213 lb (97 kg), and for women with diabetes of 195 lb (88 kg). Secular trends in body weight during the study period had median linear increases of 0.53 lb/y (0.24 kg/y) in men with diabetes, 0.50 lb/y (0.23 kg/y) in women with diabetes, 0.53 lb/y (0.24 kg/y) in men without diabetes, and 0.86 lb/y (0.39 kg/y) among women without diabetes, respectively. In cohorts born before 1940, body weight decreased. In the cohorts born between 1940-1949, body weight was stable. In all cohorts born after 1950, body weight increased. Across birth cohorts, the rate of weight increase accelerated from older to younger groups, with higher rates in the groups with diabetes than in the groups without diabetes: β

▼ The concept of Lean Construction has been introduced successfully into the Construction Industry to increase efficiency and profit by elimination of non-value adding activities or ‘Waste’. Lean Construction is an adaptation of Lean manufacturing principles and is the future of the Construction Industry in developing as well as developed countries. There has been much study and documentation conducted on ‘Lean Construction’ in USA. Even though people have started practicing Lean in India, there is lack of documented information available about it. Professionals within the Industry could already be minimizing ‘Waste’ and/or following Lean principles without the knowledge of the term ‘Lean Construction’. This thesis has reviewed and compared Lean Construction practices and awareness in India and USA.
A questionnaire based study was used to examine practices and collect data about Construction for analysis.
Descriptive statistics was primarily used to make inferences from the data. The Lean Construction characteristics of the construction professionals from both the countries were discussed and analyzed. It was inferred that the Construction Industry in both the countries could benefit further from the Lean practices and increase profitability by up to 25%. In general, personnel in the Construction Industry from both the countries need to receive regular knowledge and updates about Lean principles in order to optimize resources effectively.

▼ Stem is a dynamic part of tree. Stem affects total growth of tree, the economic value and the status of the tree in a cluster. Taper is the term used to describe the decrease in tree stem diameter with increasing height. Technically it is a rate, with units of centimeter / meter or inches / feet. The aim of the present thesis is the study of the statistical behavior of ninety-three tapers. Tapers are classified into three categories depending on whether they use measured diameters at relative or absolute heights in the tree trunk. In the first category five tapers are examined having the large diameter at 0,3 m and the small diameter at 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 of total height of the tree. In the second category, ten tapers are derived from measurements at 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 of the total height of the tree. In the third category seventy-eight tapers from 0.3 meters, 1.3 meters 3.3 meters, 5.3 meters, and so on, to the top of the tree are being examined, as well as their combination. In each taper, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion and measure of skewness were examined. Each taper was examined if it fits normal distribution or not. It emerged that in the first category all tapers approached the normal distribution. In the second category, eight of the ten tapers are satisfactorily reaching the normal distribution, while in the third category thirty-seven out of seventy-eight are satisfactorily reaching the normal distribution. By using regression analysis is examined if the addition of tapers as independent variables improves single or double entry equations of volume tables. The significance of the regression coefficients was checked and the adjusted estimation factor, the standard estimation error of the theoretical values, the mean absolute error were used as criteria. The results show that there is an improvement in the accuracy of volume tables equations by adding specific tapers.

This research work studies the effects of the subprime crisis in the annual stock returns of the company Corticeira Amorim and in its financial ratios. We do an analysis of Corticeira Amorim stock returns and also of its benchmarks, in a pre-crisis period (2005-2007) and in a post-crisis period (2008-2010). We also investigate the impact of some macroeconomic variables (inflation rate, interest rate, Eurodollar exchange rate, oil prices and exports) in this stock returns. We look at the performance of the profitability and liquidity ratios (R.O.S, R.O.A, R.O.E and Current Ratio), debt and risk ratios (assets to debt ratio, debt to equity ratio and G.A.F), and stocks market ratios (price to book ratio, book to market equity ratio, E.P.S and beta coefficient). Finally we do a descriptive statistics analysis. The results show that the subprime crisis affected, in a negative way, the annual stock returns of Corticeira Amorim and that the studied macroeconomic variables had an influence not only in the financial performance of the company but also in its behavior in the stock market.

▼ Introduction: Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region
worst affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the world. South Africa
(SA) is the country with the highest population of people living
with HIV/AIDS in the world and Mpumalanga province is the province
with the second highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in SA.
The district
of Gert Sibande has the highest prevalence in the province of
Mpumalanga (38.9%) in 2006. Since many patients living with
HIV/AIDS usually present to district hospitals as the first point
of contact it is important to understand the implications of
HIV/AIDS in a resource limited health system.
Study setting: The
setting for this study was Amajuba Memorial Hospital (AMH) a
district hospital in the Gert Sibande district of the Mpumalanga
province.
Objective: To analyse direct costs of providing
inpatient care to adult patients with HIV/AIDS-related illnesses at
AMH from the perspective of the provider (hospital)
Study methods:
The population of study comprised adult patients with
HIV/AIDS-related illnesses admitted to the medical wards during the
period of October 2009 and March 2010 at AMH. A detailed
retrospective record review of patients admitted to the adult wards
at AMH with HIV/AIDS-related illnesses over a 6-month period was
conducted.
After the record review the costs were estimated using
standard costs and utilisation. Demographic and clinical patient
profiles were determined then
descriptive statistics were
calculated with total costs as an outcome variable. Subsequently
univariate and multivariate regression analysis were performed.
Results: The demographic and clinical profiles revealed that most
patients admitted with HIV/AIDS-related illnesses were: between the
ages of 39 & 49 years (35.3%), male (54.9%), urban residents
(82.0%), unemployed (87.2%), single (80.5%), were not on HAART
(70.7%), had CD4 counts between 0 & 50 x 106 /L (38.3%), had
pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) (38.4%), were admitted for the first
time (60.9%) and of the total admitted to hospital 79.0% survived
the index admission during the study period.
Descriptive
statistics of the continuous data variables were determined.
Minimums, maximums, inter-quartile ratios, means and modes were
determined and tabulated.
5
Consultation costs followed by
investigation costs were the two major contributors to total
admission costs (77.7% of the median total admission cost).
Univariate analysis revealed these significant associations with
total admission costs: admission diagnosis, discharge diagnosis,
first admission, outcome, pre-admission consults and preceding
admissions.
In multivariate regression, admission diagnosis and
pre-admission consults were analysed. Significant associations were
found between the following categories: retroviral disease versus
other diseases (p=0.001), retroviral disease versus anaemia
(p=0.035), no pre-admission consults versus 1 pre-admission consult
(p=0.007), no pre-admission consult versus 4 pre-admission consults
(p=0.039) and no pre-admission consult versus 5 or more
pre-admission consults…

▼ Background and Aim The South African higher education
sector has undergone numerous changes over the past years due to
external factors such as globalisation, managerialism and
neo-liberalism (Ntshoe, Higgs, Higgs&Wolhuter, 2008).
Furthermore De Villiers and Steyn (2009) add that state funding of
higher education in South Africa has been decreased to such an
extent that higher education institutions (HEI’s) have been unable
to parallel the increase in the number of students enrolled per
year. As mentioned by Mouton (2010) universities in sub-Saharan
Africa continue to operate under conditions which are seriously
under-resourced, which poses significant challenges for the
scholars concerned. The changes in the Higher Education
Institutional environment have forced HEI’s to increase their level
of output in terms of: enrollments, qualifications awarded,
research output and institution size and number of disadvantaged
students (De Villiers&Steyn, 2009) in order to remain
competitive. The number of changes in performance outputs as well
as the growing market for competitive higher education (HE) has
greatly impacted the job demands of academics in South Africa. The
environment in which academics in South Africa function now demands
more of them than in previous years. For example the employment
relationship has changed (i.e. teacher-driven to student-driven),
altering the type of work that people do, when they work and how
much they do (Barkhuizen, Rothmann&Van de Vijver, in press).
Accordingly, it appears that the job demands of academics have
escalated, whilst the levels of support and other resources have
declined. The objective of this study was to investigate whether
job demands and resources are significant predictors of
dispositional employability of academics in South Africa. Method A
cross–sectional research design was followed. The Job
Characteristics Scale developed by Barkhuizen and Rothman (2005)
and the Dispositional Measure of Employability (Fugate&Kinicki,
2008) were used as measures in this study. A total of 360
questionnaires were sent out to the sample, of which 158 completed
questionnaires were received, but only 146 of these responses could
be used for data analyses. This represents a 40.55% response rate.
Results The results showed that there is a significant relationship
between job demands and the change identity of the academics and
that job demands do act as a predictor of the dispositional
employability of academics in terms of their change identity. No
significant relationship between the job resources and the
dispositional employability of the academics were found, however
all of the dimensions of DE had a positive relationship with job
resources. A significant relationship between job demands and the
ethnicity, home language, age, the respondent’s job level and the
number of hours they work was found. However, no statistically
significant differences were found within gender, qualifications,
job categories, years in service and the number of years in current
positions. According to the…

▼ The relationship between the role of leadership and agricultural cooperatives performance were examined in East, West and South Ethiopia. The hypotheses were tested in a survey of N=162 leaders, managers and directors of primary coffee farmers cooperatives. The results of the test confirmed the overall positive relationship between the role of leadership and agricultural cooperatives performances. This study highlights and gives general view into how the role of leadership can significantly contribute to cooperatives business performances.
The results and findings of the analysis indicated that leaders who are most effective at business performances are those who utilize leadership behavior and the skills and trainings required in the cooperatives business organizations. The study encourages further and comprehensive research into the interconnection between the role of leadership, education and skills of leaders, financial management knowledge and decision making competency.
The study followed cross-sectional survey design, and employed evaluative quantitative analysis method. The analysis was based on primary data generated through a structured questionnaire distributed to the respondents. Responses to research statements were scaled and converted to analyze the quantitative data of dependent and independent variables based on the role of leadership and associated performance variables. The findings from correlation and multiple regressions in testing the hypotheses showed that there are significant and positive relationship between each of the five independent variables and a dependent variable of business performances.
The study concluded that leadership role was very important in cooperatives business performance and, therefore, recommended that leaders of coffee farmers’ cooperatives organizations that wanted to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their businesses performances need to implement the suggestions stated in the recommendation part of this study about the leadership roles.

▼ The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of three different training programs on timed swims made by competitive teenage sprint freestyle swimmers of both genders during a typical five-month high school season. Coaches from five teams assigned 49 female and 38 male swimmers from age 13 through age 17 (M = 14.97 years) into one of three training programs. The programs were P1 (swim only, n = 20), P2 (swim plus plyometrics, n = 59), and P3 (swim plus plyometrics and weights, n = 8). Competitive swim experience ranged from novice to seven years or more (M = 5.01 years). One-way ANOVA's were conducted on post times, gain times and standardized gain times for both the 50 and 100 yard freestyles. A standardized gain time was operationalized as a swimmer's percentage gain toward achieving a USA Swimming AAAA time standard. ANCOVA tests of between-subjects effects were also performed to compare post times and gain times. These tests controlled for the effects of gender, age, total swim yards during practice, and years of swimming experience. Multiple regression analyses were used to identify predictor variables of gain and post times for the 50 and 100 yard freestyles among high school swimmers. Gender, age, total swim practice minutes and years of competitive swim experience were among the predictors. Training program P3 produced significantly higher 50 freestyle gain times than did either program P1 (p = .028) or P2 (p = .001). Similarly, program P3 also produced significantly higher 100 freestyle gain times than did either program P1 (p = .012) or P2 (p = .002). At both distances, program P1 was slightly more effective than program P2. Regression models for both freestyle events were found to significantly predict gain times. Total swim yards (50 free) and total swim minutes (100 free) were found to be non-significant predictors.
A swim training program consisting, time-wise, of 80% swimming and 20% plyometrics plus weights is significantly more effective in improving sprint freestyle times of high school swimmers than a swimming only program or a program of 80% swimming and 20% plyometrics.

Health care-associated infections can lead to morbidity and premature death and affect many people, not only the individual himself/herself but also his/her family and the society at large. Health care-associated infections affects both patients and healthcare staff. With good basic hygiene and awareness of how infection spread many cases can be prevented and much suffering be avoided. The aim of this study was to describe the basic hygiene routines of wound care at a ward at a hospital in northern Tanzania. The study had a qualitative and a quantitative approach in which the qualitative data material was processed with content analysis and the quantitative data material was presented with descriptive statistics. Content analysis resulted in the categories contamination of the environment/materials, dirty routine and clean routine. The conclusion showed that the basic hygiene routines were rarely performed properly which increased the risk of healthcare associated infections and that basic hygiene routines did not seem to be well implemented on the ward.

▼ This dissertation integrates simulated genetic data with empirical non-genetic data to develop a framework for reconstructing human demographic processes. In the first study, I simulate mitochondrial DNA for demographic scenarios representing the initial dispersal of modern humans out of Africa. Summary
statistics are estimated for the simulated datasets to calculate the percent of explained variation by each parameter and to identify which parameter combinations generate distinct differences in genetic variation. I also identify the informativeness of different summary
statistics at summarizing genetic variation. The results show that colonization size and gene flow have the largest effects on genetic variation, suggesting that defining these migration parameters with more realistic values would allow a more accurate reconstruction of the migration out of Africa. In the second study, I analyze migration patterns through four generations in Yemen. I compare the proportion of migrants, and the distance and directionality of migration across the generations and identify factors that influence the migration patterns. The results suggest that the proportion of migrants and migration distance is significantly lower in the grandparents’ generation and more likely represents realistic values for prehistoric processes. I describe how the values for these migration parameters calculated for the grandparents’ generation can be used to generate more informative hypothesis models for prehistoric demographic reconstructions. The results from both studies are combined to develop a more realistic and geographically explicit model for the migration out of Africa that increases the possibility of accurately inferring the process and estimating values for parameters that have thus far been a challenge. This dissertation illustrates the importance of using interdisciplinary approaches from genetic and non-genetic disciplines in the continued efforts of reconstructing evolutionary histories. ( en )

▼ During the 1990s, globalisation, severe recession and changing social values among several other factors have challenged the Finnish welfare state as it was during the transition between the 1980s and the 1990s. The beginning of this paper is dedicated to describing macro-social and macroeconomic background issues as some of the factors that might have influenced the form of the Finnish welfare state. Later on, descriptive statistics have been used with the purpose of tracing potential retrenchment of the welfare state expenses and to elaborate the background information. The descriptive data indicates growth in social security expenses paid by the Finnish state, as well as rising unemployment rate, growing debt and sinking gross national product in the early 1990s. According to the same data, the national economy has recovered by the late 1990s, and social security expenses have mainly decreased simultaneously. In order to see how the welfare state has developed and reacted to the internal and external changes in the 1990s and to see how diverse social groups have been treated within the Finnish social security system, institutional revisions in three social security programs have been viewed in a narrative study. Developments in these social security programs have been compared to some presumably significant background factors in order to see if they could have affected these revisions. The conclusions are that retrenchment on the institutional level can be observed, tendency seems to be towards more activating social policies, as well as that the traditional universality of the Finnish welfare state may be fading.

▼ Exploring the cycloid temperament has been attempted
throughout the ages by various pioneers in psychiatry, psychology
and psychoanalysis. Contemporary psychiatric approaches have
estimated that cycloid pathology, most evident as Bipolar Disorder,
accounts for more than 1% of the population and is seen as the
sixth leading cause of all illnesses. Despite the latter it is
remains a desperately understudied area psychologically.
Theoretically, BD is known for (1) its complex epidemiology, (2)
costly treatment, (3) occupational impairment; (4) its negative
interpersonal implications, (5) negative domestic effects, (6)
forensic consequences, (7) death due to suicide and accidents, (8)
cost in treatment, and finally, and most importantly from a
humanistic perspective, (9) BD's diminished quality of life. Given
the various realities faced by those suffering from Bipolar
disorder the current study aimed at describing, through the use of
the Rorschach Comprehensive system (CS), the self and
object-representations, as well as the affect experiences of fifty,
predominantly Bipolar I inpatients. The patients were selected
through opportunity sampling at two provincial psychiatric
hospitals in South Africa and included Caucasian, African and
Colored respondents. All protocols were administered and scored by
trained CS clinicians and re-scored by both the author and
supervisor. Fifteen protocols were thereafter randomly assigned to
three inter-raters and a high level of inter-rater reliability
seemed evident. Given various inherent limitations of the study,
that is, (a) a study of limited scope, (b) the heterogeneous nature
of the sample and the reliance on opportunity sampling, (c) the
small sample size, (d) lack of a control group, and (d) the focus
of the study as exploratory-
descriptive in nature, basic
descriptive statistic were relied upon. Despite the various
limitations, the results obtained seemed to hint at the possibility
of a Neglected Self, characterised by difficulties in modulating
affect in moderation, lack of self-esteem and positive self-regard,
difficulties in introspection and self-inspecting behaviour, a
general lack of interpersonal comfort and feelings of threat, as
well as affectional and representational constriction. The presence
of impaired self-regulation and reflection, possible perceptual
differences in sensory-affective reactivity and processing, as well
as difficulties in representational elaboration and differentiation
needs further research and comparison to other psychiatric
disorders. Basic therapeutic inferences were also discussed that
may support those who treat cycloid patients.

▼ This study explored the school climate of adult
basic education centres by investigating the extent to which these
education centres showed evidence of control, staff cohesiveness,
physical resources, and safe and orderly environment. The study was
inspired by a lack of school climate studies that focused on adult
basic education centres as many school climate studies had
concentrated on investigating the school climate of primary and
secondary schools. The broad research question which was addressed
in the research study was: ‘What is the nature of the school
climate of adult basic education centres as perceived by
educators?’ The participating educators were randomly selected and
a survey – in the form of a questionnaire – was administered. The
questionnaire comprised the four scales mentioned above. The items
from the four scales were validated through the use of both face
and content-related validity procedures. Face validity was ensured
through pre-testing. Content validity was achieved through expert
review of the items used. The extent to which these items could be
included as part of a scale was further explored by means of
reliability analysis whose acceptable coefficient alpha was
benchmarked at 0.65 and above. Reliability was used to explore the
reliability of the questionnaire. The aspect of reliability used
for this purpose was analysis of internal consistency. The main
purpose was to ascertain whether all the items used in the four
scales collectively measured the construct school climate. For
example, the reliability analysis for the variable control had 0.79
as its coefficient alpha whilst the reliability analysis for the
variable staff cohesiveness, physical resources and safe and
orderly environment had 0.76, 0.89, 0.84 as corresponding
coefficient alpha respectively. This implied that most items within
the four scales measured the construct control, staff cohesiveness,
physical resources, safe and orderly environment as part of the
construct school climate. Furthermore, the coefficient alphas of
these four scales compared well with the overall coefficient alpha
of 0.84 for this study, which further implied that each of the
scales had an immense contribution in the measurement of the
construct school climate. Based on the scale rubric designed for
the variable control (high score 28-21: moderate score 20-14; low
score 13-0), the results from the analysis indicated that the
centres under review had a fair level of control mechanisms in
place as in all these centres the mean score varied between 23 and
25. On the basis of the scale rubric devised for staff cohesiveness
(high score 32-24; moderate score 23-16; low score 15-0), it was
also revealed that the majority of the centres had evidence of
staff cohesiveness, as no low score was recorded for in most cases
the mean score revolved between 22 and 25. Although, the results
further indicated that there was an average degree of physical
resources in most centres, it also became clear that not all
centres had the same level of physical resources at…

▼ This study explored the school climate of adult basic
education centres by investigating the extent to which these
education centres showed evidence of control, staff cohesiveness,
physical resources, and safe and orderly environment.

▼ Across the nation, teacher appraisal systems are being revamped to serve the primary purpose of supporting and developing teachers, regardless of experience. To what degree a principal believes the instructional criteria within the appraisal system are valid influencers on student achievement may be key in developing teachers at all levels of effectiveness to cultivate student achievement that can lead to higher performing schools. The purpose of this study was to identify what principals at highly effective elementary school campuses valued as the key instructional criteria in a teacher appraisal system. The outcome of this study can greatly impact the development, hiring, and transitioning of teachers at any school. By using the value-added model to identify effective schools, this study focused on the perception of principals of elementary campuses that are able to accelerate students, regardless of any perceived learning barriers. Data was collected through a qualitative approach, using
descriptive statistics in the form of charts, tables, and graphs to identify trends. A survey and follow-up interviews were administered to elementary school principals currently leading schools within the top 25% of value-added achievement in a large urban school district in the southern United States. The study determined that while the appraisal instrument encompasses several instructional criteria that principals clearly perceived as impacting student achievement, the instrument serves as a springboard into additional best practices. Open-ended survey responses and interviews determined additional instructional criteria that principals perceived as having an impact on student achievement and their plans to ensure that they continue to add value to all students as accountability rapidly increases.

▼ Persons with disabilities are often met with peer-rejection, potentially leading to hardships that can affect their self-esteem, motivation, and, ultimately, their quality of life. Research shows that the United States, as well as many other countries, is moving toward an inclusive approach to education and community acceptance where persons with disabilities will not be kept separate from their counter population, but immersed in the school and community systems. This kind of inclusion is not possible with political acceptance only, and can be met with hesitance by individuals with little experience or understanding of people with disabilities. There is little research dealing with the perspective of normally developing individuals and how they view the trend of inclusion. There is an even less detailing student view on disability, taking into consideration the students knowledge of disability as well as their preconceived attitudes.

Since traffic accidents are a global problem, this present study describes and analyzes the accidents that occurred on Federal highways, in Pernambuco state, between the years 2007- 2012. In an effort to analyze the
results, it was used as methodological options the descriptive and exploratory analysis, by the simple and multiple correspondence analysis. Given the exploratory analysis, it is needed to learn more about the associations and set of the occurred accidents, as well as its causes involved, mapping the profiles of accidents and drivers of vehicles involved. Among the main results found, the BR-101 is the Federal highway with the greatest number of accidents in the state of Pernambuco, it is about 45% of the total events. In addition, the accidents on the BR-104 cross highway showed strongly related to the undue overtaking. The identified profile as young, single, male, who has ingested alcoholic beverage, who is high school level and has suffered severe injuries is the one who best explains drivers involved in accidents in the Federal highways of Pernambuco. The results showed the main accident particulars as well: side and rear collisions, occurred on the BR-101, in the morning, due
to the lack of attention and by not keeping safety distance. Therefore, the descriptive…

Mathematical morphology (MM) is a theory that uses geometric and topological concepts for image processing and analysis. Applications MM include boundary detection, automatic image segmentation and reconstruction, pattern recognition, and signal and image decomposition. In this thesis, we study morphological operators for grayscale and color images defined according to the
distance-based approach proposed by Angulo. This type of approach usually involves the difficult task of choosing an appropriate reference. In this thesis, we establish a direct relationship between the choice of reference and the Voronoi diagram. In addition, we use descriptive statistics concepts to overcome the hard task of choosing a reference, and thus we define new pseudo-morphological operators. Such as the average of dilations and the average of erosions, the standard deviation of the gradient. Computational experiments show that some of the new pseudo-morphological operators, for example the standard deviation of the gradient are suitable for edge detection of color images

Knowledge about watershed stream flow regime allows for better public water resource management. However, human activity through reservoir operation can change the stream flow regime. In the Brazilian Northeast region, the São Francisco river basin has a major social and energetic importance. This basin has two large reservoirs, Três Marias and Sobradinho that can affect downstream flow. We select three stations in São Fracisco/MG, Juazeiro/BA and Pão de Açúcar/AL to
evaluate influence from the reservoir in the river’s downstream flow. We use Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA), Multi Scale Entropy (MSE) and Sliding Window Analysis (SWA) to evaluate changes in dynamics and complexity of river stream flow. Our major results can be summarized as follows: (1) hydrologic regime in the Juazeiro/BA and Pão de Açúcar/AL stations (closer to Large Hydropower/Reservoir - LHP/R) changed after LHP/R construction from persistent (in scales from 30 days to 1,5 years) to anti-persistent (in scales from 10 days to 1,5 years), while the series from São Francisco/MG station (most distant to LHP/R) doesn’t present any differences in long range correlations after LHP/R construction; (2) MSE analysis shows that series from Juazeiro/BA and Pão de Açúcar/AL stations have more complex dynamics after LHP/R construction and their anomalies have less complex dynamics after LHP/R construction, differently from the São Francisco/MG station series which didn’t show any
hydrologic dynamics differences throughout the same periods; (3) changes in Sliding Window SampEn (SWA-SampEn) after Sobradinho LHP/R construction were detected in the Juazeiro/BA and Pão de Açúcar/AL station series. These results indicate that regulation in stream flow by Sobradinho LHP/R has influenced the complexity and long-range correlations on the lower São Francisco river basin.

▼ Interest in patient-reported health care outcomes such as health related quality of life (HRQL) has increased dramatically over the past two decades. Typically, HRQL has been conceptualized as having at least three domains: physical, psychological, and social functioning. Although research has attempted to identify factors that influence HRQL,few studies have simultaneously examined how various factors impact HRQL in the elderly. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a causal model to identify factors influencing HRQL. The constructs and observed variables hypothesized to influence HRQL included medical burden, housing satisfaction, socioeconomic status,religion/spirituality, age, gender, and marital status.Three hundred and sixty three (363) participants were drawn from a random sample of community dwelling elderly living in Tompkins County, NY (mean age, 74.9; SD, 8.5; range 60-103). Tompkins County is located in central NY, and home to a large university and mid-size college. This study was a non-experimental retrospective design using secondary survey data from the "Pathways to Life Quality" study. Using confirmatory factor analysis, a measurement model of HRQL was tested and validated. The final HRQL model was defined by four constructs: general health perception, physical functioning, psychological functioning, and social functioning. Once this model was validated, structural equation modeling was used to test the full model examining factors influencing HRQL. Several goodness-of-fit indices were used to assess model fit. Modification indices were used to provide clues as to what changes would be appropriate to improve model fit. Respecifications to the model were based on theoretical rationale.Greater levels of medical burden, increased frequency of attendance at religious events, and increased satisfaction with housing significantly influenced HRQL (pThe results of this study suggest that there are other constructs and variables particularly salient and that directly influence HRQL in older community dwelling adults. These variables and constructs should be accounted for when conducting randomized clinical trials and cohort studies examining HRQL outcomes in older adults.

▼ Background:
Critical care units are designed and resourced to save lives, yet the provision of end-of-life care is a significant component of nursing work in these settings. Limited research has investigated the actual practices of critical care nurses in the provision of end-of-life care, or the factors influencing these practices. To improve the care that patients at the end of life and their families receive, and to support nurses in the provision of this care, further research is needed. The purpose of this study was to identify critical care nurses' end-of-life care practices, the factors influencing the provision of end-of-life care and the factors associated with specific end-of-life care practices.
Methods:
A three-phase exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was utilised. Phase one used a qualitative approach involving interviews with a convenience sample of five intensive care nurses to identify their end-of-life care experiences and practices. In phase two, an online survey instrument was developed, based on a review of the literature and the findings of phase one. The survey instrument was reviewed by six content experts and pilot tested with a convenience sample of 28 critical care nurses (response rate 45%) enrolled in a postgraduate critical care nursing subject. The refined survey instrument was used in phase three of this study to conduct a national survey of critical care nurses. Descriptive analyses, exploratory factor analysis and univariate general linear modelling was undertaken on completed survey responses from 392 critical care nurses (response rate 25%).
Results:
Six end-of-life care practice areas were identified in this study: information sharing, environmental modification, emotional support, patient and family-centred decision making, symptom management and spiritual support. The items most frequently identified as always undertaken by critical care nurses in the provision of end-of-life care were from the information sharing and environmental modification practice areas. Items least frequently identified as always undertaken included items from the emotional support practice area.
Eight factors influencing the provision of end-of-life care were identified: palliative values, patient and family preferences, knowledge, preparedness, organisational culture, resources, care planning, and emotional support for nurses. Strong agreement was noted with items reflecting values consistent with a palliative approach and inclusion of patient and family preferences. Variation was noted in agreement for items regarding opportunities for knowledge acquisition in the workplace and formal education, yet most respondents agreed that they felt adequately prepared. A context of nurse-led practice was identified, with variation in access to resources noted. Collegial support networks were identified as a source of emotional support for critical care nurses.

▼ This bachelor thesis deals with tissue characterisation in virtual monoenergetic images (VMI). Firstly, literature survey presents spectral CT which allows reconstructing VMI. Secondly, statistical evaluation of tissue CT numbers was made for all energies of VMI which were reconstructed. It was found that with growing energy of VMI CT number increases or decreases with different steepness depending on a type of tissue. As a consequence, the suitable VMI offer better contrast resolution between selected pairs of tissues, which enables better tissue segmentation and classification in these images.
