▼ The suburbs of Australia, the place where still most of the Australians live, is historical deep connected with the Australian dream. Melbourne is one of the major cities in Australia consisting of 351 suburbs in total. One of them is St Albans, a suburb between the middle and outer suburbs, 15 km north-west of the city centre. This area is marked by a vast scale, repetition in the built and unbuilt environment, a limited number of dwelling types and a great amount of family living households. The exciting urban structure of the outskirts of the cities are mainly developed on a principle of freestanding villa types on extremely generous lots. At present, it is mainly the city centre of cities in Australia that are being developed, principally as high rise apartment building types in the grid structure of the city due to the forecasted population grow. The city centre of Melbourne is becoming more dense than ever and accordingly the domestic needs are changing. To meet these needs, it will require a housing brief in the middle and outer suburbs of Melbourne. As suburbs are increasingly recognised as part of a city’s wellbeing with their own alternative ideology it opened up a perfect chance to investigate in these parts of the city and offers new opportunities. How to deal with the confrontation between the forecast of a rapidly growing population and the deep historical connection Australians have with the cultural identity of the suburbs in Melbourne? This graduation project is a proposal for a new typology in suburbia. The answer is found in a re-interpretation of the Australian dream. It seeks to defrost the current situation by unlocking the design potentials hidden in the physical structures of the suburbia, initiating a new chapter a low rise high density development. As Melbourne is a place of settlement from the cultural position of colonisations, it will be a mixed housing project construct to different income groups who can not achieve the Australian dream. A dream that is a belief that home-ownership can lead to a better life and is an expression of success and security. The welfare of the state was relatively small due to this mass home-ownership. The distribution of housing costs associated with housing loans led to a demand for a well developed welfare system. The gap between renting and owning a house is too big. The project response to the problem of affordability, accessibility and density in suburbia. Adding an active strip between the neighbourhood and the hospital intended as a lively catalyst for the neighbourhood. The idea is to swap the narrative between permanent and impermanent architecture, changing people’s perspective and bringing attention to a new typology. Together with a new way of living and working, it is up to the community to decide what the project does and what it means. By stepping off from the positive qualities of these areas, in this project St Albans, such as the good public transport connections and family friendly environments. It can be transformed into a new living…

▼ The aim of this research is to investigate how a strategic vision can be achieved within a time plan, in this case by 2050, and investigate the Swedish administrative division, to understand who does what and when. The objective of this project is to set up a detailed time plan and develop several strategies which will work as guidelines for the development of the region, in order to achieve the goals to become a connected, an accessible and a sustainable metropolitan region by 2050. Throughout the project the focus will be on three aspects and these three has one common ground: the growing population.
Densification: To prevent urban sprawl,
densification of the region is needed, in order to ensure housing, jobs and services to the people. Mobility: The public transport is reaching its maximum capacity and many infrastructural investments are needed to ensure people access to the region. Environment: Measurements are needed to protect the environment and at the same time it has to be accessible to the people. These three aspects will be translated into three goals that the region needs to achieve by 2050 in order to become a resilient metropolitan region. An Accessible City: Each citizen of the region should have access to affordable housing, commercial and public services and other services for their daily needs. A Connected City: The region should be well connected and public transport should be the main mean of transportation A Sustainable City: The region should be able to develop and expand and protect its unique environment, without increasing the carbon footprint caused by the growing population.

▼ Processing of oil sands ores to extract bitumen
generates large volumes of tailings which are deposited into large
settling basins, where the solids settle by gravity over 3-4 years
to become mature fine tailings (MFT). Methanogenesis has been
correlated with increased water recovery from and densification of
MFT. This phenomenon offers potential tailings management options,
including biodensification, an accelerated dewatering process where
the microbial community is stimulated by amending MFT with
carbon-substrates. The chemistry of methanogenic accelerated
dewatering was investigated with 2L and 50L settling columns of MFT
amended with carbon-substrates to infer possible mechanisms. It was
found that enhanced biogenic gas production induced chemical
changes in MFT. The carbon-amended MFT had increased pore-water
concentrations of HCO3-, Ca2+, Mg2+ and a lower pH. The pore-water
chemistry affects the colloidal properties of the suspended clays
in the MFT which leads to the accelerated settling of clay
particles and dewatering of MFT.

▼ As urban regions increase in population and density, the need for quietness and spaces of relative calm becomes important to inhabitants’ physiological and psychological health and wellbeing. Noises, and the sounds that create them, are treated as a by-product of urban
densification and the advancement of technology. This led to uncontrolled and incidental acoustic environments around notable points of urban
densification. Each sound adds together in the acoustic environment to create a composition that is labelled collectively as noise. Those in the professions of planning and designing these urban environments have a responsibility to become the composers of the grand aural experience that is the worldly soundscape.
In response to this design problem, this portfolio explored how architecture can be designed to enable this sustainable
densification of noisy urban environments. It proposed the incorporation of psychoacoustics and R. Murray Schafer’s soundscape philosophy (and ongoing related research) into acoustic design. By understanding the complex creation of the aural experience, this portfolio investigated whether the key to living healthily and sustainably in an inevitably sound-filled urban environment laid in the design of soundscape as a perceptual construct.
The investigation translated relevant literature into broad explorations of soundscape design elements at a variety of architectural scales. Using soundscape principles in a design process produced a strong architectural proposition that could solve both
densification and acoustic problems. This had widespread and profound implications on architectural design practices. The portfolio therefore prompts further explorations into soundscape design for other architectural problems and applications.

▼ The chapter first introduced the author’s motivation for this project. It shows the sprawl of monofunctional residential neighborhoods and the urgency to building more homes to accommodate the increasing population. In the problem statement, the author illustrated now the normal renovation mode of Lilong is to introduce monofunctional residential towers (Xiaoqu), and there are many issues like faceless urban pattern and poor walkability. The development is caused by profit, its is not sustainble for the city. For the research question, this chapter concludes “How to achieve sustainable living neighborhoods rather than introducing Xiaoqu in the old Lilong area by mixing in Shanghai’s densification Process?” To proceed with the research, it shows multiple methods to cope with research questions and defines possible research outcomes. For the methods, the author presents three main ways, including Spacemate, MXI, and parametric programming. Besides, he introduces a alignment table to show the inner connection among multiple research questions, methods, and outputs. In the end, he shows the conceptual framework and future steps of this project.

▼ This thesis uses design based research to meet the challenge of urban
densification. It proposes an approach for higher density housing development that enhances livability, achieves compactness and responds to a city’s unique landscape. To accommodate an increasing amount of people within the city, strategies and experimentation into the density of built form contributing to the urban fabric must be explored. The design based research addresses how improvements can be made upon an existing site through the reconfiguration of built form with an analysis into density, topography, existing natural ecologies and the key components fundamental to a successful urban and public realm.

▼ Ultrasonic powder consolidation (UPC) is a novel rapid, full-density powder consolidation process in which metal powders confined in a die under uniaxial loading is subjected to ultrasonic vibration at low temperature for a few seconds or less. In this research, copper powders with dendritic and spherical morphologies and an aluminum powder with spherical morphology were subjected to UPC under various conditions to investigate the effects of the process variables on the densification and metallurgical bonding of the compact. An ultrasonic washing test, developed in this research, was used to determine the extent of densification and bonding achieved in specimens consolidated under systematically varied UPC conditions. Hardness testing was also employed as a supplementary means for the assessment of compact density in both as-consolidated and ultrasonically washed states. The degree of metallurgical bonding was also qualitatively assessed from the fracture surfaces of manually broken specimens.; With the dendritic and spherical copper powders, the minimum consolidation temperature, time and uniaxial pressure required for nearly full densification were determined to be 450 °C, 4 s and 84 MPa, respectively. The best conditions were 500 °C, 4 s and 100 MPa for both copper powders. Dendritic-powder specimens exhibited better densification and bonding than spherical-powder specimens above 450 °C. However, below 450 °C, the spherical powder produced better results, due probably to its higher packing geometry and repacking under the ultrasonic vibrations. With the spherical aluminum powder, specimens with best densification and bonding were obtained under the conditions of 400 °C, 2.5 s and 80 MPa.; Compact densification generally requires a good amount of powder deformation. In UPC, this occurs very quickly in a fraction of a second if consolidation temperature is sufficiently high. However, a high degree of compact densification does not necessarily assure good metallurgical bonding. Bonding must be preceded by the formation of nascent metal-to-metal contact of powder particles, which requires good compact densification. Thus, densification is only a necessary condition for bonding. For the copper compacts, metallurgical bonding, at a given temperature, increased with increasing consolidation time, indicating that bonding is a thermally activated (diffusional) process. Densification of dendritic powder produced more fresh metal surface and hence higher degrees of bonding. The bonding in the aluminum compacts, however, followed densification more closely, reflecting the higher homologuos temperatures (up to 0.72 of the melting point in K).

▼ Significant progress has been made in recent years toward a better understanding of liquefaction and its consequences on structures. Several techniques have been developed to reduce the liquefaction hazard. Among these techniques,
densification is the most popular in practice, sometimes combined with a form of drainage control. Yet, the influence of ground
densification with or without drainage control on the performance of structures and the key mechanisms of soil-structure interaction remains poorly understood.
In this study, centrifuge experiments were designed and conducted at the University of Colorado Boulder’s 400 g-ton centrifuge facility to evaluate soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) effects, considering 3- and 9-story structures placed on a layered liquefiable soil deposit. The response of these structures was first evaluated with and without ground
densification. Subsequently, a flexible impermeable latex barrier and prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) were placed around the densified zone, to inhibit or enhance drainage.
The results show that ground
densification reduces the foundation settlement, but amplifies seismic demands on the superstructure, with potentially drastic consequences if not considered in design. The influence of
densification on foundation rotations was shown dependent on the properties of structure and ground motions.
Inhibiting flow around the densified area may be useful when confinement limits the pore pressure generation under the structure. This can lead to a reduction in foundation’s permanent rotation and the seismic demand transferred to the superstructure compared to the case involving only
densification. In cases when there is substantial excess pore pressures generated under the building, inhibiting flow can amplify the extent of softening, particularly near the edges of the structure, increasing its permanent foundation rotation and demand on the superstructure through rocking. In contrast, enhancing drainage around the densified zone notably reduced permanent foundation settlement and rotation, but amplified foundation accelerations, leading to additional seismic demands on the structure which should be considered in structure’s design.
The results presented in this dissertation point to the importance of considering the structure’s dynamic properties and force-deformation behavior, as well as foundation and ground motion properties, when designing mitigation techniques, with the goal of improving the performance of the system holistically.

▼ All over the world cities are growing, one of the positions towards dealing with this growth is that it should be realized mostly by densifying the existing fabric and realizing a high density in new developments. This trend makes considerations on the relationship of density and the architectural form, the consequences high density has on the residents and dwellings, and the relationship between the dwelling, the building and the urban fabric and the public realm ever more actual. The city of Amsterdam is one of those cities which find itself dealing with growth and has taken on the approach of densifying designated inner city areas. One of the inner city locations which is suitable for inner city densification is the neighborhood of Kattenburg and the adjacent Marineterrein. It is within this context that Metropolis Amsterdam proposes a dense inner city environment which offers qualitative living for both the residents and the city. The project aims to provide a durable fabric for unknown future developments which as such continuous to provide scale, unity and readability through its formal expression. The formal expression together with the functions of the building create an Metropolitan environment which offers a diverse range of amenities and residences within the limited footprint of the building.

▼ Urban sprawl is a contemporary issue facing not only newly developed nations and cities but many countries in Europe with historically dense urban cores, including Amsterdam. Urban city dwellers are desiring the the convenience of city life coupled with the qualities of suburbia and having ones own backyard. In the context of Amsterdam the aim was to find a new housing typology in response to a changing demographic and lifestyle desires. At the scale of the masterplan the blocks are invigorated with activity nodes functioning as a combination of private, semi-private and public spaces linked via a series of connecting streets. At the scale of the dwelling an open structure allows growth and adaptability of use over time. Densification through collectivity was explored enabling real contact with neighbours, the resolution of urban frictions and a sustainable development.

▼ It is important to reconfigure the way of thinking about urban slums. Instead of being considered a major urban problem in third world countries, one needs to realise their essential role in the continual functioning and growth of the nation’s economy. This thesis, through research and design aims at qualifying slum environments and architectural interventions within said slums. The research dealt with the idea of qualifying informal urban densification in order to formulate a base for meaningful slum upgrade processes. The design process undertakes systemic design thinking in order to propose a system of upgrade which will generate an informal economy whilst providing skill transfer and education to the community, thereby increasing the capacity of the people.

▼ Amsterdam is growing fast, faster than the rest of the Netherlands. This leads to many challenges such as housing shortage and high pressure on space and amenities. For its competitiveness it important that Amsterdam keeps developing. However, it is often considered to be full. This study will show that there is a lot of space unused in the city, and that by densification Amsterdam can be more attractive. It concludes that the agglomeration of Amsterdam has the potential to grow within its borders to an urban structure of 1.4 million inhabitants. The paradox of the compact city states that densification creates often benefits on the large scale, but negative effects on the small scale. This study will show how the densification can be implemented in a good way and how it can contribute to the quality of life. Quality of life is an important part of a city's competitiveness, therefore this study will deal with the spatial measures that are needed to achieve both. The final goal is to show how densification can improve the quality of life and competitiveness of Amsterdam, to create an even more vibrant city where people love to live and work.

▼ Western education systems have always over-shadowed my Tokelauan heritage. Through my tertiary education, I have found architecture to be a predominantly Western profession that has struggled to integrate South Pacific values.
I wonder how Tokelauan knowledge and values might contribute to Western architecture - particularly in suburbs like Hataitai.
I have used the redesign of a primary school campus - a mini-city of sorts - to explore how Tokelau culture might inform an approach to density and community. Through design-led experimentation, I have discovered a set of spatial techniques that mediate between depth and confinement. These include: layering inwards from the building envelope, overlapping layers of tactile boundaries, and softening the perimeter edge. While these techniques are rooted in Tokelau culture, they are also utterly relevant to dense urban living in Wellington.

▼ New York City, like so many great metropolises across
the world, faces a great dilemma: as the demand for living there
increases, it becomes all but impossible to afford that dream.
Storefronts in Manhattan sit vacant as the population has begun to
abandon the city for smaller and more reasonably priced markets.
Much of the quirky eclecticism that the city is known for is being
priced out, moved to far reaching corners of the outer boroughs,
and replaced with large franchises and multi-million dollar

homogenized. The city stands at the brink of losing its identity
and needs to adapt to survive.

▼ The overall goal of this research was to investigate effects of pretreatments (torrefaction at 230 and 270°C,
densification, and combined torrefaction and
densification) on biomass properties, devolatilization kinetics and gasification performance of switchgrass. Devolatilization kinetics was determined at three heating rates (10, 30 and 50°C min-1) in inert (nitrogen) and oxidizing (air) atmospheres using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Gasification performance were evaluated at three gasification temperatures (700, 800 and 900°C) using an externally-heated fixed&ndashbed reactor with air at an equivalence ratio (ER) of 0.3. Devolatilization study showed that switchgrass torrefied at 270°C had the highest carbon (C) and the lowest hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) contents (59.16, 4.67, and 34.53% d.b., respectively). This resulted in the lowest atomic O/C (0.44) and H/C (0.95) ratios and the highest higher heating value (27.11 MJ kg-1, d.b.). Combined torrefaction and
densification of switchgrass resulted in the least volatile and the highest ash and fixed carbon contents (62.63, 5.91, and 31.45% d.b., respectively). Combined torrefied and densified switchgrass had the highest rate of devolatilization in both atmospheres as evidenced by the largest rate of weight loss peaks (34 and 44 mg min-1 in inert and oxidizing atmospheres, respectively), the lowest start and end temperatures of the rate of weight loss peak (250-300 and 230-310C in inert and oxidizing atmospheres, respectively). Gasification study showed that bulk density of combined torrefied and densified switchgrass was the highest (598.17 kg m-3, d.b.) requiring less space to store and transport. Pretreatments of switchgrass and gasification temperatures had significant effects on gasification performance. Among all pretreatments, gasification of combined torrefied and densified switchgrass resulted in the highest yields of H2 (0.03 kg/kg biomass) and CO (0.71 kg/kg biomass), highest syngas LHV (4.97 MJ Nm-3), CCE (90.56%), and CGE (68.69%) at the gasification temperature of 900°C, which show that combined torrefaction and
densification significantly improved gasification performance of switchgrass.

This work is devoted to the elaboration of yttrium and aluminum garnets-based transparent composite ceramics with different (Nd+Y)/Al stoichiometric ratios ranged from 0.40 to 0.70, around the ratio corresponding to the Nd:YAG stoichiometric composition ((Nd+Y)/Al = 0.6000) by under-vacuum reactive-sintering. Pressure-casting of stable and homogeneous suspensions of mixing Al2O3-Y2O3-Nd2O3 was achieved. Study of microstructural, thermal and optical properties of these ceramics has made it possible to highlight the influence of (Nd+Y)/Al ratio on garnet phase formation and densification kinetics, and on optical properties. Thus, it appears that for ceramic with a ratio higher than 0.6000, corresponding to an yttrium-rich sample, the previously mentioned kinetics are decreased but transparence and lasers properties are less degraded, contrary to aluminum-rich ceramics ((Nd+Y)/Al < 0.6000). Moreover, study of Nd:YAP-Al2O3 powders mixing brings out Nd:YAG phase formation mechanism, suggesting the existence of solid-gas reaction with evaporation-condensation of aluminum-rich reactive phase. Finally, feasibility of Nd:YAG ceramics with high dopant content (4 at. %) has shown the interest of these materials in order to generate third-order nonlinear optical properties, especially self-focusing phenomenon of light beams by Kerr effect.

High-pressure behavior of SiO2 glass has been studied extensively because it has attracted considerable attention in various fields of mechanical and physical sciences, such as non-linear mechanics, high-pressure physics, noncrystalline physics, applied physics, geophysics, etc. Permanent densification is the most fundamental property obtained from very high pressure. We discuss a constitutive model describing the permanent densification induced deformation mechanism of silica. The constitutive law is assumed to be pure hydrostatic pressure, and uses a yield function and a flow rule describing the evolution of permanent strains after initial densification, and three hardening rules discussing the dependence of the incremental densification on the levels of applied stresses. Ex-situ and in-situ experiments are both considered to evaluate our model. Implementing our model to a finite software Abaqus and a corotational framework software SiDoLo, inverse analysis is used to determine the threshold densification pressure, the saturate densification pressure and the saturate value of densification. Numerical results show an excellent agreement to experimental data. It should be noted that our model not only…

▼ The spatial structure of Cape Town is characterised by segregated low density development patterns and urban sprawling. With a high population growth rate and urbanisation, these patterns are becoming more prominent. Due to the spatial nature of Cape Town, a large proportion of economic activities and employment opportunities are concentrated in patches across the city. In order to combat low-density sprawl and integrate spatially separated areas the key concept ?city densification? and the various elements thereof emerged. The segregated low density city structure, the concentrated nature of economic and employment opportunities along with an ever increasing population and inadequate public transport system resulted in issues such as long average travel lengths, low accessibility by poorer communities, greater use of private vehicles, and a sharp rise in traffic congestion. With the implementation of the Integrated Rapid Transport System (IRT), an initiative to transform the public transport sector to integrate all modal options, the opportunity is rendered to address these environmental, social and economical issues.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the City of Cape Town (CoCT) is utilising the full potential of the new Integrated Transport System currently being developed and implemented in Cape Town, namely the MyCiTi BRT System. It was determined that in terms of potential environmental benefits the CoCT, is utilising its full potential. Furthermore, although the potential social benefits were being utilised, the urgency of addressing social inequality is not reflected in the phased timeframe set out for the system. In terms of economic benefits, the options of using land-value add and environmental finance currently not sufficiently utilised and should be used to encourage a more sustainable public transport system.

On the other hand, these houses, as they are currently developing, are often the subject of debate because of the way of life that they generate but also in terms of nibbling agricultural / natural space. The metropolis Aix-Marseille Provence escapes this phenomenon and recored a growing peri-urban growth. From this periurbanisation, energy consumption related to buildings remains the least investigated parameter since it is difficult if not impossible to estimate building energy balances by building over a large area. Based on this observation, I wondered about the levers to control this peri-urbanization. This reflection comes from the fact that, at present, the state continues to multiply the progress in terms of urban renewal, notably with the appearance of the SRU law in 2000, then recently the ALUR law in 2014. This work of research considers that densification could be a means of ensuring a social, generational and functional mix in fabrics that are today dedicated to the sole function of housing, while decreasing their energy needs. To verify this hypothesis, an experimental work was developed with the inhabitants of the subdivision « La Clairnande », where it was a question of…

This thesis reconstructs the organizational actions and the fight that the Frente Democratico Campesino, Peasant’s Democratic Front the FDC have done since 1995 in the Western Region of Chihuahua, Mexico to resist the new neo-liberal agro-export phase of subordinating agriculture to capitalism as part of the globalization process in the context of the transition towards democracy in Mexico and the disorganizing effects of modernization. Analyzes the different fights of the FDC because of the different components of the productive process against commercial openings, the price of its products, fight against corruption and because of the democracy. Also, the teaching of the action and construction of the community that has been done, as well as its internal and external relationships. It concludes that the Fights, the economic and social organizational actions of the Peasant’s Democratic Front, be connected and unify with the ones of o! ther farming organizations have not achieved a connection of forces that allows them to change or stop the agri-food model imposed by the federal government in Mexico since 1983 even though they have influenced favorably in the democratization processes and the construction of counter powers at a local level, in the construction of community and social densification in its region of influence.

The aim of this study is to explore the possibility of using three clays for the local ceramic industry in Senegal. We used a red clay (NM) and two gray clays (MN1) and (MN 2) from the region of Ziguinchor in Nema and Tambacounda in Niani Maleme, respectively. The study of the physicochemical characteristics of clays indicates that the chemical and mineralogicalcompositions contain the presence of quartz, kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite and goethite. Their structural characteristics and their surface areas are similar. Their mineralogical characteristics lead to a classification in groups of Kaolino-illite clays or Kaolino-smectite. By thermal analysis, typical phase transformation temperatures were well identified. The shaping by uniaxial pressing of moistened and granulated powders of clays was optimized. The properties in use of the sintered products were measured indicating that the mechanical properties are limited, although cristobalite and mullite…

In single-chamber solid oxide fuel cells (SC-SOFC), anode and cathode are placed in a gas chamber where they are both exposed to a fuel/air mixture. Similarly to conventional dual-chamber SOFC, the anode and the cathode are separated by an electrolyte, but in the SC-SOFC configuration it does not play tightness role between compartments. For this reason, a porous electrolyte can be processed by screen printing. However, it is necessary to have a diffusion barrier to prevent the transportation of hydrogen produced locally at the anode to the cathode through the electrolyte that reduces fuel cell performances. This study aims to obtain directly a diffusion barrier through the surface densification of the electrolyte by a laser treatment. The material chosen for the electrolyte was cerium gadolinium oxide Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (CGO) which is deposited by screen printing on a composite NiO-CGO anode. UV laser and IR laser irradiations were used at different fluences and number of pulses to modify the density of the electrolyte coating. Microstructural characterizations confirmed the modifications on the surface of the electrolyte for appropriate experimental conditions showing either grain growth or densified but cracked surfaces. Structural and chemical modifications on the surface were evaluated as well as the gas diffusion through the electrolytes and their…

Stationsnäraprincipen imply that urban development is concentrated around public transport nodes to increase the accessibility and competitiveness of public transport against motoring transport to ensure that regional enlargement is achieved in a sustainable way. The vision for transit-oriented development (TOD) in Östergötland derives from a regional planning level and in order to implement the vision in municipal planning, it is important to specify how both the municipality and the region can benefit. An approach is to find a model that can raise the regional perspective in the local planning process. The purpose of this study is to develop a densification model that focuses on TOD in smaller urban areas. A densification model for the Stockholm region has previously been developed in conjunction with the regional development plan, and this study examines whether the model can be adapted to TOD planning in smaller urban areas. The densification model has been modified methodically with the help of two planners in Östergötland as well as a literature review on regional development and TOD. The custom model has been tested in two separate case studies and the results comprise a mapping of the potential for densification described in three different densification scenarios; municipal focus areas for densification, market interesting development areas and consensus…
