▼ Fountain codes were introduced to provide higher reliability, lower complexities, and more scalability for networks such as the Internet. In this thesis, we study Luby- Transform (LT) codes which are the realization of Fountain codes. In the LT codes, a sparse random factor graph is dynamically generated on both the encoder and decoder sides of the communications channel. The graph is generated from an ensemble degree distribution. The LT codes are also known as rateless codes, in the sense that they can generate potentially limitless codeword symbols from original data and self-adjust to channels with different erasure probabilities. LT Codes also have a very low encoding and decoding complexities when comparing with some traditional block codes, e.g., Reed Solomon (RS) codes and Low-Density-Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. Therefore, LT Codes are suitable for many different kinds of applications such as broadcast transmission. LT codes achieve the capacity of the Binary Erasure Channel (BEC) asymptotically and universally. For finite lengths, the search is continued to nd codes closer to the capacity limits at even lower encoding and decoding complexities. Most previous work on single-layer Fountain coding targets the design via the right degree distribution. The left degree distribution of an LT code is left as Poisson to protect the universality. For finite lengths, this is no longer an issue; thus, we focus on the design of better codes for the BEC and noisy channels as well at practical lengths. We propose two encoding schemes for BEC and noisy channels by shaping the left degree distribution. Our left degree shaping provides codes outperforming regular LT code and all other competing schemes in the literature. For instance, at a bit error rate of 10_-7 and k = 256, our scheme provides a realized rate of 0.6 which is 23.5% higher than Sorensen et al.'s scheme over BEC. In addition, over noisy channels our proposed scheme achieves an improvement of 14% in the released rates at k = 100 and 30 Belief Propagation (BP) iterations.

Modèle monodimensionnel de type Piston-Dispersion. Le terme de dispersion axiale englobe alors toutes les imperfections de l'écoulement : injection des fluides non homogène dans l’espace et étalée dans le temps, effet de parois, et enfin volumes morts derrière les obstacles noyés dans le tamis (poutres, conduites...) dans le cas des Lits Mobiles Simulés. Cette représentation, quoique très simpliste, s'avère généralement suffisante tant que l’étalement des fronts de concentration est d'abord induit par les limitations au transfert externe, interne (macro/microporeux) et par la thermodynamique du système. Par contre, lorsque l’adsorbant employé présente d’excellentes performances de transfert, une approche aussi simple s'avère extrêmement risquée. En effet, les phénomènes dispersifs associés à l’adsorbant (transfert et thermodynamique) et à l’hydrodynamique ont des contributions de même ordre de grandeur sur la dispersion des fronts de concentration. Dans ce cas, une description plus réaliste de l'écoulement est requise afin de mieux appréhender son effet sur les performances de séparation.Dans ce contexte, l’objectif de ce projet de thèse est de mettre en place une méthodologie pour prendre en compte ces phénomènes hydrodynamiques lors de l’extrapolation d’un procédé de séparation par adsorption. Pour cela, nous proposons une étude du couplage entre les phénomènes hydrodynamiques et le phénomène d’adsorption.

Hydrodynamics inside industrial Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) adsorption columns can be complex due to the presence of internal distribution devices, free flow chambers and heterogeneous injections. These have to be taken into account in SMB numerical models to scale-up purposes. In the present thesis, a CFD approach is adopted as an intermediate step to develop a 1D model simple enough to be used for cyclic SMB simulations while being able to represent realistic hydrodynamics. This model results from the interpretation of the moments of the fluid age distribution, transported by CFD according to the method developed by Liu and Tilton (2010) that allows to estimate the degree of mixing (Liu, 2011) of the adsorption columns. The resulting 1D model consists in the two examples provided by Zwietering (1959) of a completely segregated system and a maximum mixedness system. This model is able to reproduce the residence time distribution of the CFD model of an adsorption column, while being representative of the internal flow patterns. This results in a good representation of the coupling of adsorption and hydrodynamics by the 1D model. When integrated in a SMB simulator and compared to the traditionally used dispersed plug flow model, the new 1D model demonstrates that for most of the adsorption column geometries considered a detailed hydrodynamic description is mandatory. Such detailed hydrodynamic description is even more important when employing adsorbents with better mass transfer performances than those currently used for the p-xylene purification, which is expected in the upcoming years.

▼ South Africa is a megadiverse country, and its biodiversity is endangered by population pressure and the development needs of a developing country. In order to address the rapid decline in biological diversity, biodiversity planning has become a key focus area that aims at identifying priority areas for species and ecosystem conservation within and outside of formally protected areas. Plant conservation hotspots are identified by the quantification of indicator taxa such as plant taxa richness, rarity and endemism. But the urgent and enormous task of biodiversity assessment for conservation planning requires that we make most of what we know. Therefore, this study seeks to make a contribution by finding new ways of biodiversity pattern estimation from the extrapolation of incomplete sets of plant species distribution data at the Quarter Degree Grid level. Incomplete sampling across the grids of a study area results in false records of species absence and thus a biased biodiversity estimation. As a possible solution, plant distribution data for the western Central Bushveld Bioregion has been standardized using two profiles, namely the ‘Centroid Grid’ and ‘Integrated Grid’ profile. The former involves the strengthening of under-sampled grids by extrapolating species occurrences from three adjacent grids with the most similar vegetation units, whereas the latter integrates phyto-diversity data for the four grids intersecting at each grid reference point. Standardized data has proved to provide a means to counter the bias in plant diversity data linked to Quarter Degree Grids by a) strengthening of under-sampled grids and b) visibly smoothing out the gaps between under- and well-sampled grids, which resulted in improved biodiversity estimation for more representative spatial biodiversity modelling. Interpolation created geo-referenced polygons for more explicit use in the identification of areas of conservation concern at bioregional scale. However, well-sampled grids still dominate the outcomes of the analysis by creating spatial sampling bias. Therefore, this approach to calibrate Quarter Degree Grid resolution of spatial data is an additional attempt to achieve more representative mapping of biodiversity patterns, which is a prerequisite for strategic conservation planning for ‘living landscapes’.

▼ Collaborative filtering, such as recommendation algorithms for example where Amazon may recommend books to a customer based on other customers’ feedback and profile similarity, and/or similarity between other books, has become a key approach for effectively providing people with the most relevant information to them. Some large-scale applications, like file sharing, instant news broadcasting, and personal data management, are decentralized in their operation, and the standard centralized approach for collaborative filtering, whereby a centralized system receives all of the data and computes the outcomes, is not applicable. For these applications to remain decentralized while making use of collaborative filtering, requires research into how to decentralize the collaborative filtering computations. Many large-scale decentralized systems use an interconnection network overlay over the Internet, where individual nodes in the system connect to some set of other nodes, and to achieve scalability in this case it is widely accepted that gossiping models are the most effective choice. For collaborative filtering in these systems, the nodes themselves are typically considered to be "users”, that are searching for information, and the similarity between users can be directly instantiated in the overlay network, where similar users are directly connected to each other. On this basis, recommendation becomes straight forward, because neighboring nodes will likely have relevant information. We call this Similarity Based Clustering (SBC) of an overlay network. In this thesis, we improve upon the state-of-the-art approach for gossip-based SBC overlays, by proposing a new protocol, called Optimum Benefit Protocol, that outperforms existing protocols in terms of key metrics including convergence time, bandwidth consumption and node churn. We have implemented our protocol on PeerNet, a simulation environment for large-scale decentralized systems, and obtained a range of results using real-world data sets drawn from Movielens, Yahoo WebScope and Epinions, that provide user profiles, user ratings, and item information from big data sources. Specifically our approach addresses the "long-tail convergence” problem observed where some overlay networks take a very long time to converge for some applications. Overall we show that our protocol is competitive for building large-scale decentralized systems that require collaborative filtering.

▼ A network consists of a set of nodes and edges with the edges representing pairwise connections between nodes. Examples of real-world networks include the Internet, the World Wide Web, social networks and transportation networks often modeled as random graphs. In the first half of this thesis, we explore the degree distributions of such random graphs. In homogeneous networks or graphs, the behavior of the (generic) degree of a single node is often thought to reflect the degree distribution of the graph defined as the usual fractions of nodes with given degree. To study this preconceived notion, we introduce a general framework to discuss the conditions under which these two degree distributions coincide asymptotically in large random networks. Although Erdos-Renyi graphs along with other well known random graph models satisfy the aforementioned conditions, we show that there might be homogeneous random graphs for which such a conclusion may fail to hold. A counterexample to this common notion is found in the class of random threshold graphs. An implication of this finding is that random threshold graphs cannot be used as a substitute to the Barabasi-Albert model for scale-free network modeling, as proposed in some works. Since the Barabasi-Albert model was proposed, other network growth models were introduced that were shown to generate scale-free networks. We study one such basic network growth model, called the fitness model, which captures the inherent attributes of individual nodes through fitness values (drawn from a fitness distribution) that influence network growth. We characterize the tail of the network-wide degree distribution through the fitness distribution and demonstrate that the fitness model is indeed richer than the Barabasi-Albert model, in that it is capable of producing power-law degree distributions with varying parameters along with other non-Poisson degree distributions. In the second half of the thesis, we look at the interactions between nodes in a game-theoretic setting. As an example, these nodes could represent interacting agents making decisions over time while the edges represent the dependence of their payoffs on the decisions taken by other nodes. We study learning rules that could be adopted by the agents so that the entire system of agents reaches a desired operating point in various scenarios motivated by practical concerns facing engineering systems. For our analysis, we abstract out the network and represent the problem in the strategic-form repeated game setting. We consider two classes of learning rules – a class of better-reply rules and a new class of rules, which we call, the class of monitoring rules. Motivated by practical concerns, we first consider a scenario in which agents revise their actions asynchronously based on delayed payoff information. A irrigação localizada é a técnica que mais apresenta tendências de crescimento mundial. O uso de microtubos como emissores na irrigação localizada tem sido utilizado em pequenas unidades de produção agrícola devido a seu baixo custo de aquisição e instalação. Como forma de verificar a viabilidade técnica da utilização de microtubos o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desempenho hidráulico de quatro microtubos gotejadores de diferentes diâmetros sob fertirrigação, simulando o cultivo do meloeiro com diferentes recomendações de adubação. Para tal, foi determinado o coeficiente de variação de fabricação (CVf), o coeficiente de variação de vazão (CVq), a uniformidade de distribuição (UD) e o grau de entupimento (GE). O experimento foi conduzido com três tipos de água, sendo o primeiro proveniente de um poço no Departamento de Tecnologia Rural da UFRPE (denominado como controle), a segunda sob fertirrigação conforme recomendação da EMBRAPA (2003), e a terceira também sob fertirrigação, sendo que de acordo com DANTAS (2010). Quatro linhas laterais de mesmo diâmetro foram instaladas em uma bancada de ensaio, sendo cada linha composta por 25 emissores iguais. Foi aplicada a estatística descritiva para a obtenção das médias, desvio padrão e coeficientes de variação. Com base nos resultados obtidos pode-se concluir que os microtubos analisados apresentaram CVf excelente e a uniformidade de distribuição variou de ruim a bom, dependendo dos fertilizantes e concentrações utilizadas. Em geral, os microtubos de maior diâmetro apresentaram melhor desempenho que os demais. O uso de fertilizantes comprometeu o desempenho hidráulico do sistema de irrigação.

Trickle irrigation is an irrigation technique which expands for the entire world. Use of microtubules as emitters in trickle irrigation has been used in small units of agricultural production due to its low cost and installation. This study evaluated hydraulic performance of four different microtubes (diameter of 0.6; 0.7; 0.8 and 1.0mm) under fertigation, simulating the growth of melon. Coefficient of manufacturing variation, coefficient of variation of discharge, coefficient distribution uniformity and clogging degree were used to determinate susceptibility to clogging. The experiment was conducted with three types of water, the first from a well in the Department of Rural Technology UFRPE, the second with fertilizers as recommended by EMBRAPA (2003), and the third also with fertigation, but according DANTAS (2010). Four lateral lines of the same diameter were installed in a bench trial, each line with 25 equal microtubes. Descriptive statistics was applied to obtain the mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. In conclusion, microtubules showed excellent coefficient of manufacturing variation. Distribution uniformity ranged from bad to good depending on the fertilizer and concentrations used. In general, larger diameter microtubes performed better than others. The use of fertilizers has influenced the hydraulic performance of irrigation system.

▼ Gasification and oxy-fuel combustion technologies are a promising approach for electricity generation with improved readiness for CO2 capture and for subsequent geologic storage. Owning to limited oxy-fuel combustion knowledge, comparative evaluations on the same coal char under the pore diffusion regime studies can be useful to transfer knowledge. The comparative evaluations on reactivity, porosity transformations, morphology changes, crystallinity development, particle size distributions, and fragmentation extents of Pittsburgh no. 8 coal char during CO2 gasification conversion and char burnout in oxy-fuel combustion (21% O2/79% CO2 v/v) under the pore diffusion controlled regime were performed in a horizontal tube furnace. The initial coal char was created in an entrained-flow gasifier at 1500 °C. By using the same coal char, the behavioral differences are mostly influenced by the reactant gases. The initial char was mostly thick-walled cenospheres (>80% of particles). The relative reactivities of oxy-fuel combustion/CO2 gasification were 23 times in the early conversion stage (~10% gasification-, burnout-induced conversion (daf)) and 62 times in the later stage (~60% gasification-, burnout-induced conversion (daf)). The reactivity of the char-CO2 gasification was partially impacted by annealing due to increasing degree of ordering identified by the increasing crystalline width (La) and the increasing relative amount of large aromatic rings (≥6 rings). The crystalline width increased from 2.56 to 2.94 nm in the CO2 gasification while it decreased from 2.56 to 2.41 nm in the oxy-fuel combustion. The relative amount of large aromatic rings increased 35% for the CO2 gasification and 14% for the oxy-fuel combustion, which influenced the reactivity particularly in the CO2 gasification-induced conversions. Pore size distributions were widely developed from microporosity to macroporosity in the CO2 gasification while the oxy-fuel combustion preferentially developed macroporosity. As expected due to the different porosity development, particle fragmentation extents also differed. These were more pronounced in the CO2 gasification 6 to 12% than in the oxy-fuel combustion 1.9 to 2.5% of particles. The char fragmentation in terms of size and shape, determined through an image processing technique on SEM micrographs. The aspect ratio can distinguish between particles (<1.43) and fragments (>1.43) for this coal under these conversions. Advisors/Committee Members: Jonathan P. ▼ The concept of fountain codes has gained considerable attention in the past few years due to its simplicity, reliability, and feasibility. Nowadays, fountain codes are used in many applications including, but not limited to, data storage, data broadcasting, and point-to-point communications. While traditional fountain codes achieve the channel capacity over the binary erasure channel universally and asymptotically, they offer much room for improvement over other channels, architectures, and regimes. With the development of new technologies for smart cities and the Internet-of-Things (IoT), data transmission methodologies with arguably the highest level of flexibility and adaptability are required. With these technologies, the end users have a very diverse set of capabilities in terms of memory, power, and processing. Besides, the end users are connected via a wide range of links with various qualities and capacities. As a result, the required methodologies must provide a comprehensive solution whereby voice, data, and streamed multimedia can be provided to users on an anytime-anywhere basis. Also, they must enable a dense network of nodes with very different capabilities to communicate with each other reliably and efficiently. This thesis focuses on the design of state-of-the-art data transmission methodology with one of the highest levels of flexibility and adaptability. We present a novel fountain-based encoding technique using overlapped generations of Luby-transform (LT) codes. The proposed overlapped LT (OLT) codes provide more degrees of freedom and better trade-offs for the rateless-coded system parameters. They are highly energy-efficient, scalable, and robust. First, we design new LT codes that are robust to the communication system's parameters such as erasure probability as well as the source length. Density evolution (DE), extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart, and code stability are used to design the parameters of fountain codes with different objectives. The main objectives are: maximizing the code rate, minimizing the bit erasure probability (BEP), and maximizing erasure threshold. Secondly, we propose OLT codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC) as well as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel to improve the performance in terms of error probability and code rate. Our analysis shows that by using OLT codes, significant gains in error probability and code rate are obtained. In addition, we show that OLT codes require a smaller number of operations to recover the source data compared with conventional LT codes.

▼ In this dissertation we investigate the behavior of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) from the degree distribution and evolution perspective. In specific, we focus on implementation of a scale-free degree distribution topology for energy efficient WSNs.; WSNs is an emerging technology that finds its applications in different areas such as environment monitoring, agricultural crop monitoring, forest fire monitoring, and hazardous chemical monitoring in war zones. This technology allows us to collect data without human presence or intervention. Energy conservation/efficiency is one of the major issues in prolonging the active life WSNs. Recently, many energy aware and fault tolerant topology control algorithms have been presented, but there is dearth of research focused on energy conservation/efficiency of WSNs.; Therefore, we study energy efficiency and fault-tolerance in WSNs from the degree distribution and evolution perspective. Self-organization observed in natural and biological systems has been directly linked to their degree distribution. It is widely known that scale-free distribution bestows robustness, fault-tolerance, and access efficiency to system. Fascinated by these properties, we propose two complex network theoretic self-organizing models for adaptive WSNs. In particular, we focus on adopting the Barabasi and Albert scale-free model to fit into the constraints and limitations of WSNs. We developed simulation models to conduct numerical experiments and network analysis. The main objective of studying these models is to find ways to reducing energy usage of each node and balancing the overall network energy disrupted by faulty communication among nodes.; The first model constructs the wireless sensor network relative to the degree (connectivity) and remaining energy of every individual node. We observed that it results in a scale-free network structure which has good fault tolerance properties in face of random node failures. The second model considers additional constraints on the maximum degree of each node as well as the energy consumption relative to degree changes. This gives more realistic results from a dynamical network perspective. It results in balanced network-wide energy consumption. The results show that networks constructed using the proposed approach have good properties for different centrality measures.; The outcomes of the presented research are beneficial to building WSN control models with greater self-organization properties which leads to optimal energy consumption.

▼ Based on the hypothesis that PME fraction containing 36/27 kDa peptides (U-PME) will yield differently modified pectin than PME fraction containing 36/13 kDa peptides (B-PME), the objective of this study was to isolate the Valencia PME isozymes, de-esterify pectin to a target DE and characterize the resultant pectin products for charge and charge distribution. In addition, the calcium sensitivity was estimated by viscosity and gelling properties with CaCl2, as well by ?-potential, an indicator of the surface charge. Finally, interactions of individual caseins with modified pectins was compared by sedimentation, protein/pectin content, particle size and ? - potential. Valencia PMEs de-esterified pectin to 63% (B-Pec) and 61%DE (U-Pec) from 73%DE (O-Pec), did not decrease molecular weight, created more negative ?-potential, and had different charge distributions. Based on elution from ion exchange chromatography (IEX), chemical shifts in NMR spectra, and ?-potential, we observed a blockwise de-esterification pattern following a 10% decrease in DE. From elution profile of IEX, the peak of B-Pec and U-Pec widened and shifted to a higher ionic strength compared to O-Pec. Finally, we concluded that B-PME and U-PME had different action patterns based on the 2-fold increase in the frequency of contiguous carboxylic acid groups (FGGG ). Also, we concluded that U-Pec had less contiguous blocks of carboxylic acid groups than B-Pec but a greater population of pectin molecules were modified by U-PME. In the presence of 35 mM CaCl2, 2% B-Pec and U-Pec formed a gel, in contrast to O-Pec. B-Pec and U-Pec were 20 or 50-fold higher G’ (elastic element) than O-Pec with CaCl2 while OPec had higher viscosity than B-Pec or U-Pec without CaCl2. From the interaction of individual caseins with pectins, addition of pectin to the milk fractions had unique effect and ranged from increasing the extent of sedimentation to minimizing sedimentation at pH 3.8. ?-Casein had no precipitate initially, but addition of pectin resulted in sedimentation, and U-Pec resulted in the greatest precipitate. Based on particle size, ?-potential, and viscosity, U-Pec or B-Pec had more effect on milk dispersions than O-Pec. ?-Casein seemed to interact with pectins more like ?-casein than ?S1,2-casein.

▼ Networks have been widely used to represent and analyze a system of connected elements. Online social media networks, as a result of the expansion of the Internet and increased need of communication, have become an increasingly important part of people's lives. This thesis focuses on the statistical analysis of network data motivated by problems in online social media. It discusses problems arising from both explicit network data and implicit network data. Explicit network data are data where network structures are observable, implicit network data are those that do not have a network structure but occur under the influence of an underlying network. For the explicit network data analysis, we develop a novel method of recovering a fundamental characteristic – network degree distributions – under sampling. We formulate the problem of estimating degree distribution as an inverse problem. We show that this problem is ill-conditioned for many sampling methods in practice, and accordingly propose a constrained, penalized weighted least-squares approach to solve this problem. We demonstrate the ability of our method to accurately reconstruct the degree distributions from simulated network data and real world social network data. We also propose practical usage of the estimates relevant to marketing and advertising. For the implicit network data analysis, we look at review data from the popular review websites. Motivated by articles from the popular press and the research community which publicized that the average rating for top review sites is above 4 out of 5 stars, we study the phenomena of review rating trends and convergence using restaurant review data from TripAdvisor. We analyze the trend on different levels – a rough analysis of the characteristics of the ratings, and a subtler statistical modeling with ordinal logistic regressions. Taking into account the implicit network underlying the review data, we suggest the upward trend observed in restaurant review ratings may be explained by social influence on an individual's perception of qualities. We use the intensity of review postings as an indicator of how popular a restaurant is and to test to what extent the increase in review intensity explains increases in average rating. After that, we consider a more nuanced approach to the joint modeling of ratings and review intensity which would allow for interaction between the two, rather than intensity serving only as an explanatory variable to ratings. Specifically, a state-space model is used to test the interaction between review intensity and review ratings.

▼ L'estructura té un paper fonamental a l'hora de determinar els tipus d'operacions que els circuits neuronals poden dur a terme. Entendre les lleis que defineixen la connectivitat de les xarxes del cervell i les seves implicacions en la dinàmica neuronal és, per tant, un pas important en la comprensió del funcionament d'aquestes xarxes. Els circuits locals del còrtex, que es creu suporten les computacions essencials i bàsiques de la funció cerebral, estan organitzats de manera altament ordenada i estereotipada, i aquesta arquitectura, en termes molt generals, s'ha conservat al llarg de les diferents espècies, de les diverses àrees cerebrals i dels individus. Una bona manera de representar matemàticament aquesta família de xarxes és mitjançant models definits per una sèrie de lleis de connectivitat que inclouen un cert grau d'aleatorietat. Les lleis reflecteixen el patró estructural comú, mentre que l'aleatorietat ha de ser interpretada com la variabilitat quan es comparen diferents xarxes del conjunt. Cada vegada hi ha més evidència experimental que els circuits locals del còrtex estan lluny del model aleatori més simple, segons el qual les connexions apareixen de manera independent amb una probabilitat fixada. Aquesta troballa es fonamenta en un conjunt d'observacions a les quals ens referim col·lectivament com la ?no aleatorietat? dels circuits corticals. En aquesta tesi hem explorat fins a quin punt diverses arquitectures alternatives (xarxes amb agrupació, xarxes amb connectivitat dependent de la distància i xarxes definides a través d'una certa distribució de graus d'entrada i de sortida) podrien ser compatibles amb les propietats de no aleatorietat. Hem mostrat que tots els models estructurals alternatius que havíem proposat poden explicar les observacions esmentades, per tant aquestes propietats no aporten gaire informació sobre el tipus d'organització subjacent. Això es deu principalment al fet que les dades reals provenen d'anàlisis molt restringides, en les quals l'estructura s'estudia a partir de mostres locals formades per poques neurones. Vam buscar un estadístic local que permetés, malgrat aquestes dificultats, distingir entre les diverses estructures alternatives, i l'hem trobat en el coeficient de correlació entre els graus d'entrada i de sortida en mostres petites, que hem anomenat "sample degree correlation" (SDC) en anglès. ▼ Individual-level infectious disease models enable the study of transmission mechanisms of infectious disease while accounting for heterogeneity within the population. As well as via covariates, such heterogeneity is often best modelled through a contact network or a series of networks. However, contact network and exact time of infection (and removal) for individuals are often completely or partially unobserved. In this thesis, we account for such data uncertainty through the incorporation of a large amount of missing information (contact network and event times) into a continuous time individual-level modelling framework. The main focus of this thesis is to consider the effect of incorporating contact network uncertainty on the performance of the models within a Bayesian framework. A secondary focus will be on enabling fast inference to fit these models to epidemic data sets with a large amount of missing information. We start by introducing our R package EpiILMCT that allows users to study the spread of infectious disease using spatial- or (and) network-based continuous-time ILMs. We then investigate the performance of network-based ILMs in analyzing small epidemic data sets under different levels of contact network uncertainty, along with uncertainty in individual-level event histories, using data augmented Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). We also consider the incorporation about global-level contact network information through observa- tion models that are either based upon knowledge about the degree distribution or the total number of connections in the network. Then, we explore the use of approximate Bayesian computation population Monte Carlo (ABC-PMC) methods for fitting such models to both simulated data, and data from the UK 2001 foot-and-mouth disease epidemic. Finally, we introduce an approach to approximate full model inference by partitioning the population into a number of spatial clusters in which the contact network is divided into a series of isolated cluster-constrained sub-networks. ▼ The hypothesis was that pectinmethylesterase (PME) fractions with different peptides will have different deesterifcation action pattern. Also physicochemical and rheological properties of pectin-whey protein isolate (WPI) complexes will be affected by and intrinsic factor, such as degree of esterification (DE), as well as extrinsic factors, such as heat-treatment and pH. Based on this hypothesis, the objectives of this research were to deesterify citrus and sugar beet pectin by PME fractions with different peptides, to determine DE and distribution of deesterified groups of modified pectin, and to characterize gelling property of original/modified pectin in the presence of calcium. Also, the physicochemical properties of original/modified pectin-WPI were investigated with/without heat-treatment (at 75ºC for 20 min) at two different pHs (4.5 and 7). Finally, the effect of different DE of pectin on rheological property of pectin-WPI complexes was investigated, as well as effects of heat-treatment and pH. PME with 36 kDa peptide showed highest specific activity followed by 27/36 kDa peptides, 13/27/36 kDa peptides, and 27 kDa peptide. All PMEs showed block wise deesterification pattern in citrus and sugar beet pectin, which increased sequential structure of deesterfied groups and decreased sequential structure of methyl-esterified groups. Elastic property (G’) of citrus and sugar beet pectin in the presence of calcium increased from 10.35 up to 1354.60 Pa and from 0.05 to 201.02 Pa by PME modification. The following physicochemical properties of WPI were affected by the presence of pectin: surface hydrophobicity, zeta potential, and particle sizes. The presence of citrus and sugar beet pectin decreased surface hydrophobicity, zeta potential, and particle size of WPI at pH 4.5. Heat-treatment at 75ºC for 20 min increased surface hydrophobicity of pectin-WPI complex. Zeta potential of WPI only at pH 7.0 was more negative than at pH 4.5. The presence of citrus or sugar beet pectin made zeta potential more negative at pH 4.5. The particle size of WPI only was increased with heat-treatment and at pH 4.5. The added citrus or sugar beet pectin decreased particle sizes of WPI at pH 4.5. Regardless of pH and heat-treatment, elastic property (G’) of modified citrus pectin-WPI were significantly (p”0.05) higher than those of original citrus- or original/modified sugar beet pectin-WPI. Heat-treatment at 75ºC for 20 min increased G’ of modified citrus pectin-WPI complex. At the combination of pH 4.5 and heat-treatment, G’ of modified sugar beet pectin-WPI mixture was significantly higher than that at pH 7 or without heat-treatment.

▼ Discovery of a new host-parasite relationship, Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei in Dall’s sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) in the Canadian North, prompted the first investigation of the geographic distribution, pathogenesis, ecology and epidemiology of this parasite, as well as the related protostrongylid Protostrongylus stilesi, at Subarctic latitudes (60-65ºN). All protostrongylid parasites have an indirect life-cycle, where first-stage larvae are shed in the feces of a mammalian definitive host, penetrate the foot of a gastropod intermediate host, and develop to infective third-stage larvae. Protostrongylid larvae were recovered from over 2000 fecal samples from thinhorn sheep (Ovis dalli) and other hosts for P. odocoilei and P. stilesi across northwestern North America (38-69 ºN). Through novel application of molecular techniques to identify morphologically indistinguishable first-stage larvae, new records for P. odocoilei were established at 20 locations. This provided insight into the historical origins and biogeography of this new host-parasite relationship, and greatly expanded the known geographic range of both protostrongylids. Clinical effects, including a neurological syndrome, were described in five thinhorn sheep experimentally infected with P. odocoilei. Neural and respiratory pathology in these five sheep were compared with over 50 wild Dall’s sheep from a population naturally infected with P. odocoilei and P. stilesi. In the end stages, diffuse verminous interstitial pneumonia associated with P. odocoilei led to respiratory failure, and may have acted as a predisposing factor for bacterial pneumonia, which caused sporadic mortalities in this wild population. At Subarctic latitudes, seasonal patterns in host and parasite availability, including larval shedding by Dall’s sheep and larval development in experimentally infected gastropods, suggested that lambs become infected with P. odocoilei in a narrow seasonal window in their first fall on winter range. In combination with laboratory experiments, a degree day model for temperature-dependent larval development was developed, validated, and applied to describe and predict the effects of climate warming on protostrongylid parasites of thinhorn sheep in northern North America. In a future of climate warming, the narrow seasonal window for parasite development and transmission would be significantly extended, leading to amplification of populations of P. odocoilei and P. stilesi in endemic regions, and possibly range expansion of P. odocoilei. This may have consequences for the health of thinhorn sheep, as well as other wildlife that are important resources in the Canadian North. 梁の横座屈は骨組耐力や変形能力を低下させる主要因であり，多くの実験的・解析的研究が行われてきた．米国では，19世紀後半から，H形鋼梁の横座屈に関する多くの実験が行われてきた．様々な理論研究，実験および数値解析を経て，それらの研究成果は世界中の諸設計基・規準に反映されている．日本では，1970年代から実験的，解析的研究が精力的に行われた．横座屈耐力の評価や横座屈を拘束するための横補剛の配置・剛性・補剛力に関する研究が進められ，崩壊に至るまでの耐力を評価する塑性設計の体系が整えられた．一方，1981年の新耐震設計法施行以前の適合不適格建物においては横座屈後の挙動について検討されていないこと，梁横座屈後の骨組の耐力をどのように評価すべきかという視点から，現在は，横座屈後の梁の挙動について着目して横座屈および座屈補剛に関する多くの研究が行なわれている．これらの多くの研究成果を基に，効果的に横座屈を拘束する目的で，横補剛に関する規定が各国ごとに定められている．しかし，その横補剛の配置方法は，均等間隔で補剛する方法や，存在応力に対して補剛位置を決定する方法と様々である．米国では塑性ヒンジ部近傍を拘束した後，残る部分に許容応力度設計で横補剛を配置するという補剛法が導入されたのち，均等間隔に横補剛を配置する横補剛規定を採用している．中国においても，横補剛を均等間隔に配置する規定を採用している．一方，日本では，地震時の大変形時にも耐力が低下しないよう，現行の耐震設計基・規準において，保有耐力横補剛が規定されており，均等間隔補剛規定と端部補剛規定が示されている．しかし，均等間隔補剛規定は，設計は簡便であるが，材長が長くなるにつれて補剛数が極めて多くなるという特徴を持つ．また，端部補剛規定は設計手順が面倒であるという問題を持つ．以上のように，各国によって補剛設計方法が異なるが，それぞれの基本が保証する変形性能を明らかにした上で，設計式は統一されることが望ましいと考えられる．本論では，横補剛に着目し，日中米三国の補剛規定とその補剛効果の違いを明確にし，それぞれの横補剛を有する梁の数値解析を行い，終局耐力や変形能力について明確にする．その中で最も効果的な補剛方法に着目し，より簡便な補剛方法を提案することを試みる．より簡便で効果の高い補剛方法を提案することで，建物の耐震性と設計の自由度を上げることを目指す．1章では，本研究の目的と背景，論文構成について述べている．2章では，本論に行う数値解析の適切な載荷履歴を決定する目的で，梁部材の変形がどの程度の骨組の変形に相当するのを明確にしている．汎用有限要素法プログラムMarc2010を使用し，水平力を受ける門形ラーメン骨組を対象とした有限要素法数値解析を行い，層間変形角と梁の材端回転角の関係をまとめ，数値解析の載荷履歴を決定した．対象とする骨組の階高hは4mであり．梁の長さは，λy=110～570 で変化させる．これらの数値解析結果より，梁に要求される変形性能をまとめ，層間変形角と梁部材の材端回転角との関係を示した．その結果，梁の材端回転角0.045radに相当する層間変形角は，1/18～1/12radとなっており，本論文で使用する載荷履歴を決定した．3章では，日中米３国の補剛規定をまとめ，比較している．研究対象とする基・規準は日本の鋼構造設計規準，建築物の構造関係技術基準解説書，中国のGB50017-2003基準および米国のANSI/AISC 341-10基準である．異なる性能を要求するこれらの補剛規定に従って，いくつかの梁について必要補剛数を求め，それぞれの補剛形式下の終局的な梁の耐力や変形能力を明確にしている．本章では，H-500×200×10×16，H-600×200×11×17，H-800×300×14×26，材長はλy=110，250，570である梁を対象とした．米国，中国の規定は，ほぼ同じであることを示し，日本の保有耐力横補剛は，材長によって補剛数が大きく異なることを示した．4章では，汎用有限要素法プログラムMarc2010を用いて，数値解析を行い，第３章で示したそれぞれの基準に従った横補剛の補剛効果を明確にしている．梁の材端変形角にして0.1radまでの単調載荷および0.015rad，0.03rad，0.045radの振幅を2回ずつ繰返す繰返し載荷とした．数値解析結果より，中国と米国の規定は，ほぼ同等の効果を示すことを明らかにした．また，3国の規定の中で，日本の保有耐力横補剛が最も効果的であることを示した．5章では，4章で最も効果的であることを示した日本の保有耐力横補剛の利点を取り入れ，端部補剛で挟まれた中間部を均等間隔で補剛する方法を提案している．汎用有限要素法プログラムMarc2010を用いて，端部補剛間の均等補剛間隔をパラメータとした繰返し載荷を受けるH形鋼梁の数値解析を行い，細長比λy=570の梁について，必要補剛間隔は100iyでよいことを示した．また，他の材長に対する効果を確認するため，細長比λy=170～570の梁の解析を行い，全ての材長に対して，最大耐力および最終耐力がおおむね全塑性モーメントを満足できることを示した．6章では，以上の内容をまとめた結論を記した．

建物の耐震性向上につながるより簡便で，効果的な補剛方法を提案することができた．

▼ Complex network theory offers useful approaches to analyze the structural and functional properties of real life networks. In this work, we explore some of the mathematical concepts of network theory and study real life systems from a complex network perspective. We pay particular attention to networks of connections within the human brain. We analyze weighted networks calculated from full functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data acquired during task performance. The first novelty of this study is the fact that we retain all of the connections between all of the voxels in the full brain fMRI data. We then evaluate the extent to which this rich dataset can be described by existing models of scale-free or exponentially truncated scale-free topology, comparing results across a large number of more complex topological models as well. Our results suggest that the novel model presented in this dissertation offers a significantly better fit at the voxel level. Structural characterization of the brain can also give insights into the effects of traumatic injuries. For our second study, we used brain networks to explore the topological consequences of brain damage in computational models. By simulating the effects of several traumatic brain injury (TBI) models we find a variety of disruptions in the modular structure and connectivity of the post-injury networks. In particular, we focused on the effects of focalized injuries, axonal degeneration and diffuse microlesions. Our results suggest that mathematical models can predict, to some extent, the structural and functional effects of TBIs based on the analysis of specific topological measures. Furthermore, these results may be correlated to known cognitive sequelae of TBI. In order to complement the set of topological properties studied, we review the concept of participation of a node in a modular network. The participation coefficient is often used to provide a ranking of the "importance" of a node; however, we propose a new measure, called the gateway coefficient, to assess the involvement of a node. Our results suggest that the gateway coefficient has a superior ranking power than the participation coefficient since it takes into account a variety of modular properties of the network. These results are illustrated with examples of simulations and real life datasets, such as the air transportation network and the human brain network.

Les radars à synthèse d’ouverture (RSO) polarimétriques sont devenus incontournables dans le domaine de la télédétection, grâce à leur zone de couverture étendue, ainsi que leur capacité à acquérir des données dans n’importe quelles conditions atmosphériques de jour comme de nuit. Au cours des trois dernières décennies, plusieurs RSO polarimétriques ont été utilisés portant une variété de modes d’imagerie, tels que la polarisation unique, la polarisation double et également des modes dits pleinement polarimétriques. Grâce aux recherches récentes, d’autres modes alternatifs, tels que la polarisation hybride et compacte, ont été proposés pour les futures missions RSOs. Toutefois, un débat anime la communauté de la télédétection quant à l’utilité des modes alternatifs et quant au compromis entre la polarimétrie double et la polarimétrie totale. Cette thèse contribue à ce débat en analysant et comparant ces différents modes d’imagerie RSO dans une variété d’applications, avec un accent particulier sur la surveillance maritime (la détection des navires et de marées noires). Pour nos comparaisons, nous considérons un paramètre fondamental, appelé le degré de polarisation (DoP). Ce paramètre scalaire a été reconnu comme l’un des paramètres les plus pertinents pour caractériser les ondes électromagnétiques partiellement polarisées. A l’aide d’une analyse statistique détaillée sur les images polarimétriques RSO, nous proposons des estimateurs efficaces du DoP pour les systèmes d’imagerie cohérente et incohérente. Ainsi, nous étendons la notion de DoP aux différents modes d’imagerie polarimétrique hybride et compacte. Cette étude comparative réalisée dans différents contextes d’application dégage des propriétés permettant de guider le choix parmi les différents modes polarimétriques. Les expériences sont effectuées sur les données polarimétriques provenant du satellite Canadian RADARSAT-2 et le RSO aéroporté Américain AirSAR, couvrant divers types de terrains tels que l’urbain, la végétation et l’océan. Par ailleurs nous réalisons une étude détaillée sur les potentiels du DoP pour la détection et la reconnaissance des marées noires basée sur les acquisitions récentes d’UAVSAR, couvrant la catastrophe de Deepwater Horizon dans le golfe du Mexique.

Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems have become highly fruitful thanks to their wide area coverage and day and night all-weather capabilities. Several polarimetric SARs have been flown over the last few decades with a variety of polarimetric SAR imaging modes; traditional ones are linear singleand dual-pol modes. More sophisticated ones are full-pol modes. Other alternative modes, such as hybrid and compact dual-pol, have also been recently proposed for future SAR missions. Cette étude a pour but de documenter la relation qui existe entre les propriétés de transfert d’un matériau (répartition en taille de pores, porosité totale accessible à l’eau, saturation en eau), et son coefficient de diffusion. Pour cela, des matériaux ayant une porosité quasi-monomodale sont utilisés : verres Vycor® et géopolymères ; ainsi que des matériaux ayant une porosité complexe : pâtes de ciment CEM V. L’utilisation des verres Vycor® et des géopolymère permet de quantifier la diffusion gazeuse, en fonction de la saturation en eau, de matériaux ayant des pores de même dimension, ou du moins, de même ordre de grandeur. L’utilisation des pâtes de ciment permet quant à elle, de vérifier s’il est possible de décomposer le coefficient de diffusion d’un matériau dont la porosité est complexe, en un assemblage de coefficients de diffusion de matériaux dont la porosité est quasi-monomodale. Pour cela, on s’attachera à particulièrement à étudier l’impact de l’agencement du réseau poreux sur le coefficient de diffusion.Les travaux se décomposent en trois parties :• Etude des caractéristiques géométriques du réseau poreux des matériaux étudiés. Il sera utilisé la porosimétrie par intrusion de mercure, la porosimétrie à eau, des essais de sorption / désorption d’azote, et des essais de désorption d’eau.• Mesure expérimentale du coefficient de diffusion des matériaux, en fonction de leur humidité relative de stockage et de leur saturation en eau.• Modélisation du coefficient de diffusion des matériaux utilisés, et étude de l’impact de l’agencement de leur réseau poreux (tortuosité, connexion des pores entre eux)

This work documents the relationship that exists between the transfer properties of a material (pore size distribution, total porosity accessible to water, water saturation degree), and its diffusion coefficient. For this sake, materials having a quasi mono modal porosity are used: Vycor® glasses and geopolymers. We also use materials having a complex porosity: CEM V cement pastes. The use of Vycor® glasses and geopolymers allows quantifying the gas diffusion coefficient through materials having known pores size, as a function of their water saturation degree. The use of cement pastes allows checking if it is possible to decompose the diffusion coefficient of a complex porosity material, in an assembling of diffusion coefficients of quasi mono modal porosity materials. For this sake, the impact of pore network arrangement on the diffusion coefficient is studied in great details. This study is divided into three parts:• Measurement of the geometric characteristics of materials porous network by means of the mercury intrusion porosimetry, water porosimetry, isotherms of nitrogen sorption / desorption, and water desorption tests.• Measurement of the materials diffusion coefficient, as a function of their relative humidity storage, and their water saturation degree.• Modeling the diffusion coefficient of the materials, and study the impact of the pore network (tortuosity, pores connection)
