▼ Aiming to make an intervention in both emerging Slow Cinema and classical Trauma Cinema scholarship, this thesis demonstrates the ways in which the post-trauma cinema of Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz merges aesthetics of cinematic slowness with narratives of post-trauma in his films Melancholia (2008), Death in the Land of Encantos (2007) and Florentina Hubaldo, CTE (2012). Diaz has been repeatedly considered as representative of what Jonathan Romney termed in 2004 “Slow Cinema”. The director uses cinematic slowness for an alternative approach to an on-screen representation of post-trauma. Contrary to popular trauma cinema, Diaz’s portrait of individual and collective trauma focuses not on the instantenaeity but on the duration of trauma. In considering trauma as a condition and not as an event, Diaz challenges the standard aesthetical techniques used in contemporary Trauma Cinema, as highlighted by Janet Walker (2001, 2005), Susannah Radstone (2001), Roger Luckhurst (2008) and others. Diaz’s films focus instead on trauma’s latency period, the depletion of a survivor’s resources, and a character’s slow psychological breakdown. Slow Cinema scholarship has so far focused largely on the films’ aesthetics and their alleged opposition to mainstream cinema. Little work has been done in connecting the films’ form to their content. Furthermore, Trauma Cinema scholarship, as trauma films themselves, has been based on the immediate and most radical signs of post-trauma, which are characterised by instantaneity; flashbacks, sudden fears of death and sensorial overstimulation. Following Lutz Koepnick’s argument that slowness offers “intriguing perspectives” (Koepnick, 2014: 191) on how trauma can be represented in art, this thesis seeks to consider the equally important aspects of trauma duration, trauma’s latency period and the slow development of characteristic symptoms. With the present work, I expand on current notions of Trauma Cinema, which places emphasis on speed and the unpredictability of intrusive memories. Furthermore, I aim to broaden the area of Slow Cinema studies, which has so far been largely focused on the films’ respective aesthetics, by bridging form and content of the films under investigation. Rather than seeing Diaz’s slow films in isolation as a phenomenon of Slow Cinema, I seek to connect them to the existing scholarship of Trauma Cinema studies, thereby opening up a reading of his films.

▼ Introdução: A partir da introdução dos antirretrovirais altamente potentes (HAART), assistiu-se, nos países desenvolvidos, a mudanças nos padrões de morbimortalidade associado à aids. No entanto, no Brasil, tem-se poucos estudos analisando esta questão. Objetivo: Analisar as causas básicas e associadas de óbito entre pessoas com aids, residentes no município de São Paulo (MSP), nos períodos pré e pós a introdução da HAART e investigar possíveis disparidades, segundo a área de residência entre 2000 e 2006. Métodos: Estudo descritivo. Os dados foram analisados segundo três períodos: pré-HAART (1991-1996), pós-HAART precoce (1997-1999) e pós-HAART tardio (2000-2006). Fontes de dados: Base Integrada Paulista de Aids (BIPAIDS), do Programa Estadual de DST/Aids-SP e Fundação SEADE e Fundação SEADE para estimativas populacionais. A classificação das causas de óbito foi feita de acordo com a CID-9 (1991-1995) e CID-10 (1996-2006). Foram estimadas as taxas de mortalidade ajustadas por idade para as principais causas básicas de morte, para o período de 1996 a 2006 e efetuada análise descritiva dos óbitos, segundo causas básicas e associadas de morte (1991 a 2006). As causas básicas foram classificadas em: definidoras e não definidoras de aids. Variáveis de interesse: características sociodemográficas, categorias de exposições hierarquizadas e causas básicas e associadas de morte. Para a análise comparativa das variáveis categóricas utilizou-se o teste do qui-quadrado de Pearson, ou o exato de Fisher, e para as variáveis contínuas, o teste t-Student. Para a análise segundo a área de residência, os distritos administrativos foram classificados de acordo com o Índice Paulista de Vulnerabilidade Social. Resultados: Após a HAART, comparando 1995 e 2005, houve declínio de 66,2% na mortalidade por aids no MSP. As causas básicas de morte por doenças não definidoras de aids aumentaram de 0,2% para 9,6% (p<0,001) entre o primeiro e terceiro períodos, respectivamente. As causas básicas de morte com maior aumento, no terceiro período, se comparado ao primeiro, foram: as doenças cardiovasculares, elevando-se de 0,01% para 1,7% (p<0,001), as pneumonias bacterianas/inespecíficas, de 0,01% para 1,6% (p<0,001) e as neoplasias não definidoras de aids, de 0,03% para 1,5% (p<0,001). As causas associadas de morte mais mencionadas no período pós-HAART tardio, se comparado ao préHAART, foram: pneumonias bacterianas/inespecíficas, elevando-se de 25,8% para 35,9%, as septicemias, de 14,5% para 33,5%, as doenças cardiovasculares, de 3,0% para 10,1% e as doenças do fígado, de 2,2% para 8,0%. No pós-HAART tardio, as causas básicas que se destacaram, além da aids, e se distribuíram de forma heterogênea, segundo local de residência, foram as neoplasias não definidoras de aids nas áreas predominantemente ricas, as doenças cardiovasculares nas áreas predominantemente de classe média e as agressões nas áreas predominantemente pobres. ▼ Relying on hitherto unknown materials from John Adams’s private archive, this dissertation explores the compositional and revision histories of Nixon in China (1987), The Death of Klinghoffer (1991), and Doctor Atomic (2005). It focuses on Adams’s creative processes, which, sources show, were determined by the conceptual and ethical problems he and his collaborators, Peter Sellars and Alice Goodman, aimed to solve. Among these challenges included finding a means to articulate and reflect upon subjects of devastating magnitude, such as human rights abuses in Nixon, terrorism in Klinghoffer, and the events leading up to and aftermath of Hiroshima in Atomic. As a result, the musical strategies used to tell these stories shifted over the span of each opera’s creation. Musical sketches, detailed correspondence, and the original manuscript scores offer insight into not only Adams’s compositional practice, but also into how art can—and cannot—respond to tragedy. The study also examines the centrality of revision to Adams’s creative enterprise. To this day, Adams revises the opera scores in relation to pressures ranging from the logistical to the ethical and political. As a result of its contentious subject, Klinghoffer saw three compositional overhauls over twenty years, representing the most acute example in Adams’s operatic output, if not the entire American repertory, of the marked role that critical voices, politics, and even catastrophe can play in the remaking of a score through time. Atomic and Nixon, too, have undergone revisions since their respective premieres. The operas thus can only be understood as products of revision, exhibiting processes of growth and change alongside the ongoing conflicts to which the works refer. Revision here is not necessarily corrective but rather a vital aspect of Adams’s compositional practice. Each draft is a combined singularity, part of an aesthetic that denies empirical constructions of time, just as the minimalist aesthetic is concerned with the immediate moment. The relationship between the opera scores and ongoing events thus entails a nuanced definition of the minimalist experience, one that acknowledges a larger communal process—a lively, collaborative, and public dialogue—at play in the evolution of these works. ▼ This study examines the attitudes to, and commemoration of, death in Wales in the period between the end of the thirteenth century and the middle of the sixteenth century by analysis of the poetical work produced during this period. In so doing, this is placed in the wider context of death and commemoration in Europe. Although there are a number of memorial tombs and some evidence of religious visual art in Wales which has survived from the late medieval period, in comparison with that to be found in many other European countries, this is often neither so commonplace nor so imposing. However, the poetry produced during this period very much reflects the visual material that was produced in other parts of Europe. The poetry shows that the Welsh gentry at that time were familiar with many of the themes surrounding death and commemoration so obvious in European visual art such as the macabre and the fate of both the body and the soul after death. With war, famine and disease being so commonplace during the Middle Ages, and the late medieval period witnessing the effects of the Black Death, it is, perhaps, little wonder that macabre imagery and concerns about the fate of the soul were so often produced in European visual art of the time. These concerns are reflected in the Welsh poetry of the period with several poets composing quite vivid poetry describing the fate of the body as a decomposing corpse after death or allusions to the personification of Death appearing to claim its victims. The tension that many felt between the role of God on Judgement Day and God as Redeemer is also apparent in a number of the poems composed at this time. This study shows how important the role of the poet was amongst the gentry in Wales during the late medieval period, a role which ensured that the patrons of the poets were immortalised in words rather than by physical memorials. It also highlights the importance of poetical works of the period as an important primary source for historical research. Many of the poems give a contemporaneous account of important events of the period such as symptoms of plague victims which confirm that the Black Death was indeed the bubonic form of the plague.

O objetivo deste trabalho é refletir a respeito da questão da ambiguidade fotográfica no século XIX a partir do pressuposto teórico de que a fotografia era considerada, em seus primórdios, uma espécie de lápis da natureza. Este conceito foi concebido pelo pesquisador e fotógrafo inglês William Henry Fox Talbot, na obra ThePencilofNature, publicada entre os anos de 1844 e 1846. O fio condutor de nossa discussão parte da hipótese de que ThePencilofNature já apresentava uma série de ambiguidades e ambivalências características da prática fotográfica do século XIX e, em parte, até os dias de hoje, em relação ao apelo técnico-científico, comercial e artístico de uma sociedade industrial. Para tal reflexão, utilizaremos alguns exemplos da produção fotográfica da época, fazendo uso de alguns conceitos de filósofos e de pensadores da fotografia tais como Martin Heidegger, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, Philippe Dubois, André Rouillé e Boris Kossoy, relacionados a alguns preceitos básicos sobre a linguagem fotográfica: a questão da técnica e da verossimilhança fotográficas, a transformação da percepção do real por meio da fotografia e a presença da morte no registro fotográfico

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the question of the photographic ambiguity in the 19th century from the theoretical assumption that photography was considered, in its origins, a kind of pencil of nature. This concept was developed by the English researcher and photographer William Henry Fox Talbot, in the work The Pencil of Nature, published between 1844 and 1846. Our discussion is based on the assumption that The Pencil of Nature already presented ambiguities and ambivalences typical of the photographic practice in the 19th century and, to an extent, until today, as regards the technical, scientific, commercial and artistic appeal of an industrial society. We draw examples from the photographic production at the time, using concepts developed by philosophers and theorists of photography such as Martin Heidegger, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, Philippe Dubois, André Rouillé and Boris Kossoy, related to some basic notions about the photographic language: the question of technology and photographic verisimilitude, the shift in the perception of reality through photography and the presence of death in the photographic image

▼ "The Life of Death" is a creative nonfiction thesis in three parts. The purpose of this thesis is to explore and understand the importance of place in one's life, whether it's in relation to a job, after the loss of parents, or while looking back on childhood. It is a collection of nonfiction stories about my life told through flashbacks, and personal narration. It is a lyrical, moving journey that I take one memory at a time. The first essay, 'Sliding into Home' is set between late 2012 and 2013. Through personal narration, reflection and meditation the parallels between the importance of family, home and the sport of baseball, mainly the significance of home plate. During this journey home, I find out my mother has a rare, incurable cancer and she is given a limited amount of time before she will die. I find a way to come to terms with her diagnosis and move toward a grief I know will come. I use the game of baseball as a metaphor for my healing. The bat becomes an extension of the hand, the baseball another extension of self, family and home. All the pieces come together like a baseball player rounding the bases on the diamond-shaped field headed for a complete circuit. I use the game of baseball as a guide for my journey to the pre-grief stages of my mother's looming death. Like a baseball player not ready to give up the run, I am not ready to give up my mom. The second essay, 'The Landscape of Memory' is set in the fall of 2014, one year after my mother died, a few months after my father's sudden death, and two months after a miscarriage. It starts with a plan and ends with a trip across of the country to a writing and yoga retreat in search of healing and meditation. I use personal narration and reflection while navigating the initial stages of grief. Location plays a vital role in this essay, reminding me as the narrator, that grief cannot be boxed up and buried, but must be set free. My last essay, 'Losing Michelle,' is about the death of my friend. In this essay, I weave personal narration with flashbacks, while walking through a cemetery looking for her marker. It discusses my first experiences in death and grief. In preparation for my thesis, I continued to journal my memories, wrote and co-authored a nonfiction book, attended yearly writer's conferences, attended creative writing seminars, and began teaching college English. No matter what research avenue I selected, memories of my parents and death were already at the forefront of my writing. I researched the various stages of death by reading the widely popular nonfiction book, On Death and Dying, by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and explored the history of my hometown, Haw River, NC by reading the book, Down Along the Haw: The History of a North Carolina River by Anne Melyn Cassebaum. Before and after my mother's death, I educated myself on death in preparation of the inevitable. ▼ Background: The prevalence of dementia has been expanding largely and quickly among the developed countries. The increasing prevalence of dementia is a significant problem, especially since there is currently no cure available for this disease. Dementia is the most prominent disease among older people associated with a loss of independent function and autonomy, which affects not only the patients but also their family members. Dementia becomes an important cause of disability and death worldwide. The quality of care toward and at the end of life care has discussed to be improved for benefits of not only people with dementia but also caregivers alongside the increasing prevalence of dementia in the older population. The place of death is suggested as a quality indicator for the end-of-life care. Finland is growing old most rapidly among EU countries. Details of the place of death for people with dementia in Finland have not been reported yet. Aims: The aim of this study was to reveal where people with dementia die in Finland, and what extent the frequency of different places of death has changed over time. Data: Data of the places of death of people with dementia were derived from Finnish national health and social care registers. Data covered all those who died at the age of over 70 years had dementia in the study years 1998 and 2002-2013, and a 40% random sample in the years 1999-2001 (N=140034). Methods and Results: Descriptive analysis and logistic regression analysis were done using the IBM SPSS statistics. During the study period, the frequency of dementia increased from 22% to 33.9%. Men with dementia died more often at an earlier age (aged 70-79) than women who died more frequently at a later age (aged 90+). During the study years 1998-2013, the most frequent place of death was the primary care hospital (i.e. the health center), followed by nursing home and sheltered housing with 24-hour assistance. Dying at home or specialized hospitals was rare. During the study years, dying in the hospital decreased. Dying in the long-term care facility increased. The sheltered housing with 24-hour assistance became a more frequent place of death in Finland. Conclusions: Trends in places of death has changed from institutional care to outpatient long-term care in Finland last decades. Death at home and specialized hospitals for people with dementia remained infrequent in Finland. Even nearly half of people with dementia died at the primary care hospital, but recently the trend of dying at long-term care facility, especially sheltered housing with 24-hour assistance increased in Finland.

A thesis presented to the Music Department Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, MA By Julia R. O’Toole The purpose of this thesis was to examine the ways in which Gian Carlo Menotti engaged voices and instruments to create humanity in the characters through the music, focusing on three tragic operas: The Consul, The Saint of Bleecker Street, and The Death of the Bishop of Brindisi. The outcome of this study provides insights that can be applied to performance of these and potentially other Menotti operas. This study concentrated on iv two prominent tragic characters in each work. A brief biographical background was presented to establish context from which Mr. Menotti wrote, followed by a sampling of reviews for perspective into how these operas have been received, and synopses. Findings are supported through examination of form, and of the relationship between orchestration and voicing. The following methods were engaged: historical research, analysis of practical application of traditional uses for orchestral instruments, harmonic and rhythmic analysis of the full scores, scrutiny and classification of drama and form, review of text, theme and motive identification, interviews with performers and audience members, and statements by the composer. The conclusion of the study is that Menotti successfully used the music to establish identifiable, relatable shades of human emotion and expression. He achieved this level of humanization by capitalizing on the strengths of individual instruments and voices and ensembles, joining words and music in a way that defies separation, and evolving standard opera form to better mirror real human action and reaction. Clearly defined and musically individualized characters (particularly the six characters examined in this thesis) provide a convincing emotional experience for the audience. ▼ In this dissertation I have offered studies on selected aspects of the third book of the Georgics, the second 'published' work of Vergil. The Georgics is a didactic poem in four books in which Vergil presents a discussion of various aspects of farming, advice on the maintenance of the land, the planting of crops with special attention to the cultivation of the vine and the olives and the keeping of livestock and bees. At various points in his presentation, Vergil suspends his didactic approach to offer comment on contemporary problems, the political corruption and chaos evident throughout all of Italy. These editorial intrusions by the concerned poet have prompted modern critics to transcend the limited critical approach which views the Georgics as nothing more than an agricultural manual in verse, and to appreciate the broader philosophic design of the poem. Within the technical framework of his poem Vergil is offering a vision of civilization with important moral and political implications for his age. In spite of this enlightened critical approach to the poem as a whole, the third book of the Georgics has suffered from scholarly neglect. Structurally its position in the poem is crucial: Vergil abandons the preoccupations with the vegetable world and inanimate Nature which characterize books I and II, and turns to animate representatives of Nature, cattle, horses, sheep, and goats, whose lives are marked by passionate involvement and turmoil. The principal themes of book III are love and death, and although Vergil never directly abandons his preoccupation with animals, I believe that he does intend his discussion to have important moral and political implications for men as well. In my study of the third Georgic I have emphasized a vital political direction for Georgic III: Vergil uses his agricultural material as metaphor and the principal representatives of the domestic agrarian world as symbols in his vision of concern for the fate of Rome and all of Italy. I have begun my study with a consideration of the changing agricultural patterns in the Italian peninsula during the last two centuries of the Republic in order to expose the glaring discrepancy between patterns of land utilization in peninsular Italy in the late Republic and the simple, subsistence farming which Vergil discusses in the Georgics. Vergil was aware of the agricultural conditions of his age and obviously did not intend his treatise to be interpreted literally as a technical manaal. A close comparison of his technical material with the agricultural discussion provided by Varro in the De Re Rustica, Vergil's principal source for his agricultural precepts, offers strong evidence of a basic disparity between the sophisticated artistic presentation of the third Georgie and the uninspiring prosaic aspects of his subject matter, and additional proof that Vergil intends a broader design for the third Georgie, a philosophic statement about man and the world. O presente trabalho aborda as dificuldades sentidas pelos profissionais de saúde perante os doentes em fase terminal. É importante percebermos como é que os profissionais de saúde se preparam psicologicamente para tratar dos pacientes com o profissionalismo que lhes é pedido. O trabalho recai, na tentativa de verificar, a forma como conseguem “escapar” a esta ligação directa com a morte. Participaram neste estudo do tipo exploratório, 4 enfermeiras e 1 médica da Unidade da Dor do Hospital Garcia de Orta, que através de entrevistas semi-directivas, descreviam as suas experiências. Abordámos o percurso profissional, as dificuldades no dia-a-dia, as situações mais gratificantes, a função da equipa e o processo de luto. Nos resultados obtidos, utilizámos como método a análise de conteúdo. Os resultados destacaram a identificação, como a maior dificuldade, lembrando desta forma que os profissionais de saúde, também sofrem com a perda dos doentes, como se de alguém próximo se tratasse, complicando a relação profissional e levando a que normalmente se usem mecanismos do evitamento. Concluímos que é indispensável o apoio da equipa multidisciplinar, de forma a acolher todos os acontecimentos que provocam desconforto e angústia em relação à morte, por mais mecanismos utilizados é impossível dissociar a relação profissional da pessoal.

This essay’s goal is to approach the difficulties felt by the health professionals towards patients in the terminal phasis. The psychological state of those professionals is described as an emotional burst, in which fear and mostly fear of one’s death is enhanced. It’s important to understand how health professionals prepare themselves internally, so they can treat patients with the required professionalism. This close relationship between patients and caretakers represents a complex phenomenon, which leads to the exchange of values, beliefs, perceptions, emotions and feelings. This essay regards mostly the way as professionals manage to escape this direct connection to death. The sample was composed by four participants, three nurses and a doctor, from the Unity of Pain of the Garcia de Orta Hospital, whose semi-structured interviews described their experiences, both personal and professional, and mentioned the toughest ones and the way to get over them. The analysis of results revealed that health professionals are also human beings, and therefore suffer from patients’ loss, as if they where very close, such as a relative. They also have their own mourning and anguish. Sometimes, the identification with the patient leads to moments of omnipotence and frustration. One of the most popular methods used by the participants was avoidness (what the eye doesn’t see, the heart does not grieve over); it’s easier to stay away from patients, so on their last hour, suffering can be smaller. To cope with all these experiences, some more painful than others, they can lean on the unconditional support from their multidisciplinary team, which represents the place to love, to shout, to feel and grieve. The law deeds control the use of both a private and public territories. The owners of the land must use a holding agreeably to the law and not violating its regulation. The owners and the users of a land must know the requirements of law articles: permissible activity and its restrictions, the rights, responsibilities and duties of the owner, also the penalties for violating the law. In order to lead the land owners to use their holdings agreeably to the objective purpose of the use and to save it, the national land use control has to be positively implemented, not avoiding to draw up the reports on violating the administrative rights. Although the restitution of proprietary rights in the district of Telšiai is almost finished, but there are still a lot of complaints about landmarks, approaches to the holdings, which are represented or not represented in the projects and for the boundaries between neighboring land owners. The Administration of the county chief analyses the validity of complaints of citizens and if the citizens are keeping their responsibilities and duties. According to the provisions of the law of the County Administration of Lithuanian Republic, the governor of the county staying within his authority deals with applications of legal persons and decreases it. The performed survey showed that the state expenses for the analysis of complaints have to be compensated by the owner.

This paper will discuss the presentations of Judas Iscariot in the Gospel of Matthew and in Jesus Christ Superstar, a musical written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice in 1970. To do this, I will compare the two sources and evaluate what modern reception history has done with Judas as a character. I will be using a film version of the musical from 2000, which is available on YouTube. Mainly this study will examine the Matthean pericope and scene of Judas’ death to try to get an understanding of the presentation of the disciple Judas in biblical times and today. Because of the different types of material, the analyses of Matthew and the Musical will differ somewhat. A central argument is that Judas alone is responsible of his acton, betraying Jesus and taking his own life. I will in this paper argue that the presentation of Judas is not black or white. We need both the biblical and the modern presentation to create a credible presentation of the historical Judas.

I begynnelsen var berättelsen. Jag var tretton år när jag hade mitt första möte med Judas. Jag hade tidigare läst och hört om honom, men jag hade aldrig mött honom, förrädaren. När jag var tretton år introducerades jag till Jesus Christ Superstar. Rockoperan som visar Jesu sista vecka utifrån Judas perspektiv. Vad händer när den mörke förrädaren istället blir en bekymrad vän? Vem var Judas och hur har han presenterats genom tiderna? Berättelsen om Judas Iskariot, känd som förrädaren, bär på något speciellt och välbekant. Jag vill med denna uppsats undersöka bilden av Judas. Bilden av den bibliska Judas men också hur bilder av honom har kommit att se ut i modern receptionshistoria. Denna uppsats kommer att jämföra presentationen av Judas utifrån hans sista tid på jorden. Detta görs genom att jämföra Judas död i Matteusevangeliet och rockoperan Jesus Christ Superstar från 1970 av Andrew Lloyd Webber och Tim Rice. Jag uppfattar att Bibeln överlag ger en platt bild av Judas och endast svartmålar honom. Denna bild vill jag mena att Jesus Christ Superstar arbetar emot och istället gör till en levande och mänsklig Judas som vi kan känna igen oss i. Detta är den argumentation jag kommer att föra i denna uppsats.

The aim of this dissertation is to study the narrator of the novel The Book Thief, published in 2005 by the Australian author Markus Zusak. The story centers upon Liesel Meminger, a nine-year old girl fostered by a German couple who are not enthusiasts of the Nazi regime and hide a Jewish man in their basement during World War II. The image of death as the narrator is the main feature in Zusak’s novel, which presents a soul collecting entity who observes Liesel’s experiences and makes comments about the human beings. In order to analyze such narrator, the dissertation relies on studies by Carl Gustav Jung and Gilbert Durand and, to some extent, to Sigmund Freud. The dissertation also borrows theoretical assumptions from the narratological field, having Gérard Genette and Mieke Bal as its main representatives. The dissertation is divided in three chapters. Chapter 1 offers an overview about the construction of death as an archetypal image, as a personification and as a narrator. In this chapter, the theoretical perspectives of Jung, Durand, Genette and Bal are prevalent. The objective here is to try to understand how death is represented as an idea and as an image. Chapter 2 focuses on the implications of death through the book. Hence, I analyze the death of individuals, the death drive (which assaults many of the characters), mass death and social death as a direct consequence of war. The objective of this chapter is to view death as a theme. In order to do that, some concepts from Freud, such as death drive and melancholia, are applied. Chapter 3 offers a narratological reading of the novel through the link of death to focalization, time and space. The objective in this last chapter is to analyze how death positions himself as an observer of the facts narrated. In the conclusion, I present my final considerations about the use of such peculiar narrator in The Book Thief and its role for the construction of the novel and the setting of the tone for the narrative.

O objetivo da tese é estudar o narrador do romance A Menina que Roubava Livros, publicado em 2005 pelo autor australiano Markus Zusak. A história enfoca Liesel Meminger, uma menina de nove anos adotada por um casal alemão que, não sendo entusiasta do regime Nazista, esconde um Judeu em seu porão durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. A imagem da morte como narrador é a principal característica da obra de Zusak, que apresenta uma entidade coletora de almas que observa as experiências de Liesel e tece comentáros sobre os seres humanos. A fim de analisar tal narrador, esta dissertação se apóia em estudos de Carl Gustav Jung, Gilbert Durand e, em certa medida, em Sigmund Freud. Proposer l'existence de théories infantiles de la mort suppose de considérer la mort, au même titre que la sexualité, comme un organisateur psychique. Toutefois, si elle oriente le désir, il n'est pas aisé d'accéder à ses effets sur le sujet. Le sujet se supporte d’une certaine dénégation face à la finitude de l'être afin de ne pas succomber à l'impossible de la mort. Cet impossible se manifeste par un gel du désir du fait de la crainte de la mort ou, à l'inverse, face à l'horreur qui se manifesterait d'une vie qui rejaillirait indéfiniment. Le démenti qu'émet le sujet transite par un tressage entre ses théories infantiles de la mort. Nous en proposons trois, "la théorie du retour dans le sein maternel", "la théorie de la survivance" et "la théorie du meurtre et de la loi du talion". Au-delà de ce triple rapport à la mort qu'offrent les théories, le sujet peut se définir par une position alternative, celle de l'entre-deux-morts, afin de ne pas céder sur son désir.

Think about childhood theories of death supposes to consider death, in the same way as sexuality, as a psychic organizer. However, if death directs the desire, it is not easy to notice its effects on the subject. The subject bears itself of a certain denial in front of finiteness of being so that he does not succumb in to the impossible of death. This impossible shows itself by a frost of desire because of deaths fear or, by contrast, in front of the horror which would show itself from a life which would spatter infinitely. The subject’s denial passes by a plaiting between its childhoods theories of death. We propose three of them, “the return in the mother's breast theory”, “survival theory” and “murder and the lex talionis theory”. It is here that reappear the childhood theories of death according to the events crossed by the grown-up subject. Taking in consideration one’s mortal condition is necessary to desire, as much as it is to cover it. So, beyond this triple relationship with death that childhood theories offers, it could be a position in which the subject would pass, between - two deaths, in order to not give in to the desire.

▼ This thesis examines the emergence of thanatology as a discipline, paying particular attention to the key thanatological theme that death has become a taboo topic in modern society and to the rhetorical construction of early thanatological texts. In order to study these issues, the thesis uses a variety of different methods. First I used corpus linguistic methodology to study the way repression proper was constructed in Time magazine, one of the most popular American news magazines of the time. This analysis showed that by the late 1950-early 1960s when thanatology had emerged as a discipline, the concept of repression proper had not completely lost its ties with psychoanalysis and had not become an integral part of ordinary discourse. Also, in the 1950s repression was often constructed as a pathology and this perception was shared by the early thanatological authors. In analyzing the publications by Geoffrey Gorer and Herman Feifel, the two important authors for the early history of the discipline, the methods of Discursive and Rhetorical Psychology, Critical Discourse Analysis and Genre Analysis were used, especially to analyse in discursive depth the essay "The Pornography of Death" by Geoffrey Gorer (1955) and the volume The Meaning of Death (1959) edited by Herman Feifel. Geoffrey Gorer in his essay "The Pornography of Death" contributed to the dissemination of the notion of repression and introduced to the public discourse the idea of the repression of death, death being the new taboo. Herman Feifel in his volume The Meaning of Death introduced the idea of repression of death as a characteristic feature of the Western society to the scholarly literature of the 1950s and 1960s. Feifel based his construction of the taboo on death on that of Gorer and legitimized the essay "The Pornography of Death" as a part of scholarly discourse on death. Using genre analysis it can be seen that neither the essay by Gorer, nor the volume The Meaning of Death can be viewed as conventional scholarly texts. Thus death studies as a scientific discipline can be viewed as originating at the essentially public level of communication. This has wider implications for understanding how new disciplines can be constructed and promoted both within and beyond the academic world.
