▼ Today's Internet connects billions of physical devices. These devices are often immature and insecure, and share common vulnerabilities. The predominant form of attacks relies on recent advances in Internet-wide scanning and device discovery. The speed at which (vulnerable) devices can be discovered, and the device monoculture, mean that a single exploit, potentially trivial, can affect millions of devices across brands and continents.
In an attempt to detect and profile the growing threat of autonomous and Internet-scale attacks against the Internet of Things, we revisit honeypots, resources that appear to be legitimate systems. We show that this endeavour was previously limited by a fundamentally flawed generation of honeypots and associated misconceptions.
We show with two one-year-long studies that the display of warning messages has no deterrent effect in an attacked computer system. Previous research assumed that they would measure individual behaviour, but we find that the number of human attackers is orders of magnitude lower than previously assumed.
Turning to the current generation of low- and medium-interaction honeypots, we demonstrate that their architecture is fatally flawed. The use of off-the-shelf libraries to provide the transport layer means that the protocols are implemented subtly differently from the systems being impersonated. We developed a generic technique which can find any such honeypot at Internet scale with just one packet for an established TCP connection.
We then applied our technique and conducted several Internet-wide scans over a one-year period. By logging in to two SSH honeypots and sending specific commands, we not only revealed their configuration and patch status, but also found that many of them were not up to date. As we were the first to knowingly authenticate to honeypots, we provide a detailed legal analysis and an extended ethical justification for our research to show why we did not infringe computer-misuse laws.
Lastly, we present honware, a honeypot framework for rapid implementation and deployment of high-interaction honeypots. Honware automatically processes a standard firmware image and can emulate a wide range of devices without any access to the manufacturers' hardware. We believe that honware is a major contribution towards re-balancing the economics of attackers and defenders by reducing the period in which attackers can exploit vulnerabilities at Internet scale in a world of ubiquitous networked `things'.

▼ The development of the IEEE 802.22 standard is aimed at providing broadband access in rural areas by effectively utilizing the unused TV band, provided no harmful interference is caused to the incumbent operation. This thesis presents the analytical framework to evaluate the number of active customer premise equipments (CPEs) in a wireless regional area network. Initial ranging is the primary process in IEEE 802.22 networks for CPEs to access the network and establish their connections with the base station (BS). A comprehensive analysis of initial ranging mechanism is provided in this work and initial ranging request success probability is derived based on the number of contended CPEs and the initial contention window size. Further, the average ranging success delay is derived for the maximum backoff stages. The collision probability is highly dependent on the size of the initial contention window and the number of contended CPEs. To keep it at a specific level, it is necessary for the BS to schedule the required size of the initial contention window to facilitate the maximum number of CPEs to establish their connections with reasonable delay. Therefore, the optimized initial window size is proposed that meets the collision probability constraint for a particular number of contended CPEs. An analytical model is also developed to estimate the ranging request collision probability depending upon the size of initial contention window and the number of contended CPEs. Moreover, this approximation provides the threshold size for contention window to start the initial ranging process in the IEEE 802.22 network.

▼ This thesis is comprised of two components—one critical and one creative—sharing one, convergent goal of achieving a better understanding of, and ability to produce, quality fiction. The critical component addresses craft elements in contemporary fiction. Specifically, these elements include:
premise, place, and decoder statements. By analyzing these techniques in the work of active, or otherwise remarkable, authors, the thesis explores the ways in which the pieces are successful and attempts to isolate and come to an understanding of the specific elements employed. The creative component, made up of six works of short fiction, hopes to employ the techniques discussed in the critical component (alongside others), demonstrating growth and competency in the form.

▼ Premise plumbing, the pipes and fixtures at the building level, present a unique challenge for maintaining drinking water quality. Of particular concern are opportunistic pathogens, including Legionella pneumophila which can regrow in
premise plumbing and cause disease in immunocompromised populations. The goal of this work was to explore engineering methods for control of L. pneumophila and total regrowth. The first line of study involved a series of experiments with simulated glass water heaters (SGWHs) to investigate interactions between specific water chemistry factors and L. pneumophila regrowth, and the second used laboratory grade purified water to investigate the limits of a nutrient control approach for biological stability.
Several water chemistry factors including assimilable organic carbon (AOC) content, granular activated carbon (GAC) biofiltration, plumbing materials, copper concentrations and temperature were investigated using SGWHs. AOC is the carbon available for bacteria growth in drinking water. Results indicated that AOC reduction may be a promising method for controlling L. pneumophila and total bacteria regrowth, but there may be a point at which AOC reduction is no longer effective. Prior GAC biofiltration removed organic carbon and was effective in controlling total bacterial regrowth in SGWHs, but actually encouraged L. pneumophila regrowth.
A wide variety of materials typically encountered in
premise plumbing was investigated and only had limited effect on proliferation of L. pneumophila and total bacteria. The effects were dynamic, even with long-term studies. Copper pipes held promise for control of L. pneumophila, as did copper concentration across a range of pHs. Aqueous copper concentration released from pipes was dependent on temperature, however, and thus this control method may not be applicable in all hot water lines.
The peak temperatures for L. pneumophila proliferation fell between 41 and 45 °C, temperatures which could be encountered in a hot water distribution system when the water heater is set to 48 °C, as is often recommended with scalding and energy concerns. A constant temperature of 53 °C seemed to provide control of L. pneumophila, but recolonization is possible even at these high temperatures.
Work with laboratory grade water indicated that extreme control of nutrients was not enough to completely control regrowth in
premise plumbing. With stagnation in the cleanest conditions, a 2-log increase of a diverse group of bacteria was observed within 10 days. As drinking water can never achieve such nutrient removal, this study presents the limits of nutrient removal as a strategy for regrowth control.
This work explored both the potential and the limitations of several mechanisms for controlling regrowth in
premise plumbing. Understanding how these water chemistry factors affect L. pneumophila and total bacterial regrowth is critical to identifying the most effective engineering controls.

▼ Use of ICT in managing secondary schools in Kenya has been rarely used; Schools started
embracing ICT tools and used them for typing letters and exams. Seven years ago schools began
automating their management systems; however some schools experience a lot of problems with
these systems such as high cost of ownership, maintenance and lack of ICT personnel.
The purpose of this study was to compare the two available methods of running SMS; on-premise
and on cloud. In doing so the study revealed the challenges experienced by on premise SMS and
many opportunities for solving these challenges that cloud SMS presents.
The capital expenditure required in each case was studied, also studied was recurrent expenditure
and security issues in each case. The study looked ICT costs, qualitative benefits and quantitative
benefits.
The study targeted schools that have automated school management processes in Limuru District of
Kiambu County and ICT companies that offer SaaS cloud computing services in Kenya. Data
collection was done by use of questionnaire and interview.
The study revealed many problems experienced by Kenyan secondary schools while implementing
on-premise SMS; the major problem being insecurity in their locations, which has lead to hardware
loss for up to 50% of the schools while 30% of the schools lost their data due to poor data protection
measures attributed to lack of ICT personnel. ICT costs was another problem facing secondary
schools, it was observed that initial hardware costs were very high and wished to have an option of
reducing these costs. Use of inappropriate technology is prevalent in schools with 50% of schools
using MS Access as a database.
Cloud computing can help schools solve a lot of problems such as providing better security for their
data and by avoiding capital expenditure for ICT which is in millions of shillings. It will also provide
easier access to school information by stakeholders without the need to travel to school to access the
same information. The much needed ICT expertise lacking in schools will then be provided by the
cloud provider.
It is advisable for school to move their SMS to the cloud and the schools that have not automated
their systems should consider adopting cloud SMS directly. This will allow them reap the benefits of
the cloud on reducing costs, securing data and available ICT staff.

Interest in the quality of the health and fitness industry has grown considerably over
the last decade. Gymnasiums are increasingly placing greater emphasis on meeting
members‟ expectations and needs. As more competition enters this industry,
members‟ perceptions of gymnasiums facilities and services are becoming more
important. It is apparent that there is a need to measure members‟ expectations and
perceptions of service quality at Virgin Active gymnasiums in the greater Durban
area.
The aim of this study was to investigate customer service quality at commercial
health and fitness centres. The four objectives of this study were: firstly, to identify
members‟ expectations in terms of the delivered services provided at Virgin Active
gymnasiums; secondly, to ascertain the perceptions of members towards the
services provided at Virgin Active gymnasiums; thirdly, to measure the gaps between
members‟ expectations and perceptions of service quality, using a modified version
of the SERVQUAL model, and fourthly, to calculate and measure the score of the
SERVQUAL dimensions.
The instrument used to assess the members‟ expectations and perceptions of
service quality was the SERVQUAL questionnaire, measuring expectations and
perceptions according to five quality dimensions. Four hundred and fifty members
were surveyed using the SERVQUAL questionnaire. The respondents were selected
through non-probability sampling within which convenience sampling was applied.
Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques.
Conclusions and recommendations were thereafter drawn from the literature and the
findings of the study.
The study shows that members‟ expectations of service quality exceeded their
perceptions on the five service quality dimensions used in the SERVQUAL
questionnaire. The smallest dimension gap score proved to be tangibles, while the
largest gap score of the study proved to be empathy followed by responsiveness.
iv
Therefore, it is recommended that Virgin Active gymnasiums in the greater Durban
area attend to these gaps and ensure that necessary strategies are implemented so
that members receive a high level of service quality in all areas of the service
dimensions.

▼ For two sequences A = a1a2a3 ⦠am and B = b1b2b3 ⦠cn, a multiset interval â(A, i, j) = [ax | i ⤠x ⤠j], and a common multisets interval (CMI) is â(A, iA, jA) = â(B, iB, jB) for some $iA, jA, iB, jB. 1 ⤠iA ⤠jA ⤠m and 1 ⤠iB ⤠jB ⤠n, which is a multiset that appears in both sequences.
Previously, researchers have proposed algorithms for finding the common set interval of permutations and sequences. In this thesis, we propose two algorithms to find common multiset intervals of two sequences. The first is the occurrence counting algorithm, which counts the occurrences of the characters in all intervals of the two input sequences and calculate the difference of character occurrences. Its time complexity is O(n3) time, where n denotes the length of the input sequences. The second is the hash key algorithm, which use the product of prime numbers and the modulo operation to build a hash table for quick search. The time complexity of the second algorithm is O(n2 + Gn + qn) or O(n2|Σ| + G|Σ|+ q|Σ|), where G denotes the number of answers and q denotes the number of error collisions. In our experiments, we use C/C++ source codes in
CPE (Collegiate Programming Examination of Taiwan) as the data set for classification. The experimental results show that the BKS (behavior knowledge space) method with the combination of the LCS (longest common subsequence) and CMI classifiers can obtain better accuracy than the two methods alone.

CPE: a job under pressure? From a conceptual and methodological point of view, the study of the professional representations of this job among the Conseillers Principaux d’Education themselves is part of a discipline which contributes to the Sciences of Education: Social Psychology. This research allows us, in a descriptive approach aiming at understanding, to grasp this polymorphic job better and it provides food for thought about the scope of the professional representations as well as their links to the social representations, such links being made more complex in this professional field by the heterodoxy-orthodoxy ratio. This job is being questioned in its three dimensions: information, attitudes and field of representation, but being a CPE refers to a student-oriented action and to a positive attitude towards the job versus a half-hearted attitude towards the representation of professional self. Our structural approach allows us to confirm the existence, in this human-related job in co-construction within team-work (endogroup versus exogroup) of common representational elements: listening to students as well…

As it a neglected and relatively unknown object of the scientific fields, the leaflet is most often relegated to a simple tool for illustating political struggles, wether they be electoral campaigns or social movements. With their multiple definitions, which open as many perspectives for analysis (historical, sociological, linguistic analysis), ephemeral leaflets have never been questionned from the viewpoint of their materiality, of their manufacturing and dissemination, and even less from that of the multiplicity of their uses. The aim of this thesis is to question the leaflet as a « activist technology » within a particular socia mobilization, the one called « against-CPE » of 2006. This movement, by their character leading to a « political crisis », first latent, then more and more open, presents itself as an ideal framework for analysing the materiality of this object, as well as its different uses and the main activist pratices which are related to it.

Projektkurs arbetshälsovetenskap, Högskolan i Gävle.

▼ Background: Organizations are continuously challenged to create differentiated customer value and experience to increase profitability and gain competitive advantage. At the same time, the fast-paced advancement of technologies provides the opportunity to the organizations to create a differentiated customer value by offering innovative products and services. Internet of things (IoTs) is one such emerging technology that brings within itself opportunities and challenges to be addressed. However, so far research has not sufficiently followed how the utilization of IoTs can enhance customer value and experience. Purpose: The purpose of conducting this study is to explore how the utilization of IoTs enhance customer value and experience in an equipment manufacturers context and what are the associated opportunities and challenges. The study also aims to contribute to gap identified in the literature about how organizations can utilize IoTs to enhance customer value and experience. Method: The qualitative study utilized a single instrumental case study to explore the research questions. The data is collected by conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews. Conclusion: The study reveals that the utilization of IoTs can significantly improve customer value and experience in many ways. This may involve enabling user to monitor, control and optimally use the equipment, sharing useful information, allowing value co-creation and synergistic values and finally by providing autonomous equipment’s or solutions. However, the study also reveals that the utilization of IoTs also pose certain challenges along with the opportunities which must be carefully evaluated.

▼ Nineteenth-century modernity, according to Walter Benjamin and other critics, kills storytelling. Instead of treating this as a real disappearance, I consider how writers continually reinvent this death to work through historically specific questions about tradition, memory, and cultural transmission. In nineteenth-century France, for example, the recurrent belief in the end of tradition prompted movements for folklore collection – like Napoléon III's decree for the preservation of poésies populaires – as well as broad reflections about the future of cultural expressivity. Nodier, Nerval, Mérimée, and Champfleury, all combined literary creation with folklore study for the eclipse of oral tradition was, paradoxically, the very foundation of modern literature as it was coming to be defined. Thus, Nerval appends to his Sylvie a folklore collection so as to mark the distance between the written and the oral, reaffirming literary modernity while mourning tradition. Though far-removed from folklore, Barbey d'Aurevilly's short stories and fragmented frames that impede narrative transmission also question the very possibility of storytelling. In addition to such formal innovations, writers also revisited earlier storytelling topoi. In the early eighteenth century, when Antoine Galland introduced Les Mille et une nuits to the West, Schéhérazade's life-or-death storytelling stood as commentary on the tyranny of audience demands as the patronage system was breaking down. But nineteenth-century writers returned to this ancient storytelling sultana to think about the demands of newspaper editors, growing readerships, and the transformation of literature into mass market entertainment. Finally, interest in folklore fades on the mainland, but debates about preservation of traditions and ownership of cultural goods – debates once linked to France's colonial projects – become central to post-colonial Francophone literature. Patrick Chamoiseau and other proponents of créolité spotlight the paradox of preserving Creole storytellers' legacies in writing – or in French. Assia Djebar even intersperses her bloody tale of a modern Algerian Schéhérazade with fragments from Galland's eighteenth-century text, foregrounding the question of what happens to the voice and to stories after a storyteller dies. In short, folklore has a long history of being a reference point for thinking about the very notions of literature or modernity that supposedly spell its demise. Literary depictions of storytelling tell a story less about oral culture than about literature itself. And concern about who is no longer telling stories often reveals a deeper cultural anxiety about who is now writing or reading stories.

This dissertation is a qualitative study about why qualified prospects decline timeshare
sales presentation even though they earn a small incentive for doing so. The Hoffman
and Bateson’s decision process model is used as a broad theoretical framework. On this
basis and the inputs of managers and off-premise contact (OPC) representatives of a
Marketing company located in Orlando, Florida, USA, five main likely reasons are
suggested for understanding prospect behavior. Families from different countries who
declined the timeshare tour were interviewed in order to assess the rationale supporting
their decision. After comparing the three perspectives (Managers, OPCs, and qualified
prospects), it was found that past experience is the heaviest factor in the decision
making process, since most of the families who decline the tour have had a bad
experience in the past regarding the timeshare industry. This is in line with Hoffman
and Bateson. Our findings provide fresh information about qualified prospects’
perspectives and renew the call for innovative practices regarding this segment of the
vacation ownership industry. As it is a qualitative study implemented in Orlando area
only, our results should be read as exploratory and uncritical generalization is not
recommended. We outline avenues for further research that may consolidate this area of
tourism and hospitality service marketing analysis.
pesquisa futura.

▼ In an information society organizations are becoming increasingly aware of the means
in which they create, distribute and communicate information. This is also known as
knowledge management. The thesis examines the potential that knowledge
management offers to youth sports organizations and its current state in a specific
youth sports organization.
The thesis attempts to solve its research questions by presenting certain aspects of the
theory of knowledge management that might prove useful for youth sports
organizations in general. These aspect are outlined to the following four perspectives:
information creation & distribution, information storage, education & development
and communication skills. The current state of knowledge management in youth sport
organizations is evaluated by analyzing empirical data from a case-organization
(GrIFK, ice hockey) fitted with the theoretical framework built around knowledge
management.
The thesis and its corresponding interviews and questionnaires were conducted in the
spring of 2014. The interview was conducted with the Sports Director of the caseorganization
and the questionnaire with the organization’s coaches.
The study is research-oriented and relies on qualitative research methodology. Thus it
does not intend to provide generalizable anwers but in-depth understanding and
preliminary findings regarding the issue. With a theory-connected
premise the thesis
attempts to attach knowledge management into youth sports organizations in general
and the case-organization in particular. For the examination of the empirical data
gathered the study employs content analysis.
The thesis concludes with theoretical, practical and detailed key findings regarding the
issue. The results provides numerous insights about the practical usefulness of
knowledge management when improving youth sports organizations and indicates
topics for future research.

▼ An essential step to evaluating arguments is moving from the weight of individual premises to the weight of the conclusion. In order to perform this step, one must understand the relationship between the premises in the argument.
In the past, analyzing
premise relations in informal logic has been limited primarily to the linked-convergent distinction. This distinction has failed to resolve some of the basic problems in finding a definition because it has underestimated the degree to which premises interact with each other in some complicated way.
Embracing concepts from holistic epistemology, I argue that evaluating a
premise involves considering a wide set of presuppositions and implications that that
premise, if accepted, carries. I call this wide set the
premise/world. The relationship between premises is then essentially just the relationship between these two
premise/worlds.

▼ Premise plumbing is the part of the drinking water distribution system closest to the point of use. Since
premise plumbing is characterized by a long residence time, elevated temperature, and reduced levels of disinfectant residue, drinking water in
premise plumbing typically experiences elevated levels of microbial presence as compared to finished water exiting water treatment utilities, particularly under stagnation conditions frequently encountered in
premise plumbing. Thus, stagnant drinking water in
premise plumbing may represent an important source of public health risk. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify factors contributing to the deterioration of microbiological quality of stagnant drinking water in
premise plumbing. Results from this study indicated that the service age of
premise plumbing system is positively correlated to the concentration of microorganisms in stagnant drinking water; Another factor contributing to microbial contamination is the usage pattern, with systems experiencing lower levels of water consumption exhibiting greater microbial contamination than those having greater water usage patterns; Since disinfectant residue is an important determinant of microbial contamination, the loss of free chlorine as the most common disinfectant residue was further examined. My results demonstrate that pipe material has significant impact on the decay rate of free chlorine, with copper pipe showing the greatest chlorine decay rate, and PVC pipe showing the slowest. The deposits onto the pipe wall appear to reduce the rate of chlorine decay, likely forming a barrier between the pipe material and water, which slows down the reaction between the pipe wall and the disinfectant. Moreover, pipe diameter and temperature could significantly influence the rate of chlorine decay, with greater diameter leading to smaller surface-to-volume ratio and subsequently a slower chlorine decay rate. As expected, elevated temperature was shown to accelerate chlorine loss. These results provide important insights into the mechanisms of chlorine decay in
premise plumbing and the factors contributing to the deterioration of the microbiological quality of drinking water in
premise plumbing, which could facilitate the development of effective strategies for controlling water quality in
premise plumbing and reducing public health risks from waterborne infectious diseases.

▼ Consumer exposure to opportunistic pathogens in potable water systems poses a significant challenge to public health as manifested by numerous cases of pneumonia, non-tuberculosis lung disease, and keratitis eye infections. Water utilities have extensive understanding in control of heterotrophic and coliform bacteria re-growth in water distribution systems via disinfection, control of assimilable organic carbon (AOC), and biologically degradable organic carbon (BDOC). However, much little is known about the effect of AOC on the proliferation of heterotrophic bacteria and pathogens within
premise plumbing. This thesis is the first systematic examination of opportunistic pathogen persistence and amplification in simulated glass water heaters (SGWH) as a function of influent organic matter concentration. The role of plumbing conditions that may internally generate AOC is critically examined as part of this evaluation.
Strong correlations were often observed between influent organic matter and heterotrophic bacteria in effluent of SGWH as indicated by 16S rRNA gene abundance (average R2 value of 0.889 and 0.971 for heterotrophic organisms and 16S rRNA respectively). The correlation was strongest if water turnover was more frequent (every 48-72 hours) and decreased markedly when water changes were less frequent (stagnation up to 7 days). No simple correlations were identified between the concentration of pathogenic bacteria (L. pneumophila, M. avium, A. polyphaga, and H. vermiformis) and AOC, although correlations were observed between M. avium and TOC over a limited range (and only for a subset of experiments). Indeed, there was little evidence that Legionella and Acanthamoeba proliferated under any of the conditions tested in this work.
Parallel experiments were conducted to examine the extent to which factors present in
premise plumbing (e.g. sacrificial magnesium anode rods, cross-linked polyethylene, nitrifying bacteria, and iron) could influence water chemistry and influence growth of bacteria or specified pathogens. Although these factors could strongly influence pH, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and levels of organic matter (e.g. iron, magnesium, nitrifying), there was no major impact on effluent concentrations of either heterotrophic bacteria or
premise plumbing pathogens under the conditions investigated.
While additional research is needed to confirm these findings, at present, there is no evidence of correlations between organic matter and pathogen concentrations from SGWH under conditions tested. Substantial effort was also invested in attempting to identify SGWH and oligotrophic nutrient conditions that would consistently support L. pneumophila and A. polyphaga amplification. A review of the literature indicates no prior examples of large scale amplification of these microorganisms at nutrient levels commonly found in synthesized potable water. It is likely that a complex combination of abiotic and biotic factors (i.e. micronutrients, necrotrophic growth, ambient water temperature, disinfectant type and…

▼ African horsesickness (AHS), caused by African
horsesickness virus (AHSV), is an infectious, non-contagious,
insect-borne viral disease that affects members of the Equidae
family. AHSV is a non-enveloped virus, consisting of 10 segments of
double stranded RNA (dsRNA) encoding seven structural and four
non-structural proteins. Infection of mammalian cell cultures with
AHSV leads to severe cellular pathogenesis effects (
CPE), whereas
insect cells show no noticeable
CPE. Differences are also apparent
between different serotypes of AHSV with regards to viral
production, viral release, membrane permeabilisation and
CPE. In
this study we investigated different aspects of the AHSV life cycle
in cell culture. The first aim of this study was the development of
a real-time RT-PCR assay to quantify and monitor dsRNA from
AHSV-infected cells. The dsRNA was used to quantify viral
production, as dsRNA (one copy of each segment) is found only
within viral particles and is not free within the cytoplasm of
infected cells, thus giving a true representation of the amount of
virus. This was achieved by cloning genome segment 5, optimising
the extraction and purification of dsRNA, optimising the cDNA
synthesis reaction, as well as the establishment and
standardisation of the real-time PCR reaction. The second part of
the study investigated and compared viral production and viral
release between three different serotypes of AHSV in either
mammalian or insect cell lines. The amount of dsRNA, which
represented cell associated virus from AHSV-3- and AHSV-4-infected
BHK cells over a 48 hr time period, was monitored by real-time
RT-PCR and revealed a second wave of dsRNA production. These
findings possibly suggest that a second round of infection of
released viruses is re-entering previously uninfected or infected
cells to replicate further. AHSV production was monitored in KC
cells and indicated no production of progeny virions. However, an
improvement was obtained when AHSV was first passaged on KC cells
before being used for infections. The results from this study are
in agreement with the fact that for a particular virus to replicate
efficiently in a specific cell line, it should first be adapted to
those cells. The dsRNA was quantified from samples representing
equivalent amounts of infectious virus (i.e. same titre values) of
AHSV serotypes 2, 3 or 4. The amount of dsRNA was approximately
four-fold higher from serotype 2 than from serotypes 3 and 4. When
the percentage of viral entry into cells was analysed, the majority
(approximately 90%) of virus from serotypes 3 and 4 entered the
cells, whereas serotype 2 showed viral entry of only about 50%.
These findings suggested that a large amount of virus from serotype
2 was non-infectious, while the majority of virus from serotypes 3
and 4 was infectious. However, serotype 2 was a great deal more
cytotoxic to cells (e.g. earlier onset and severity of
CPE) when
compared to cells infected with either serotypes 3 or
4.

▼ Critical networks e.g. telecare services, telemonitoring, are implemented to provide the information security and reliability that the end user desires, especially during an emergency. Unlike business carrier systems that are planned for the general public’s use, critical communication systems are designed particularly for public protection and other serious communication situations. Availability and reliability of such networks is highly desirable. The following thesis works to compare and analyze a variety of communication access technologies to find out the best primary means of data transportation for health critical services and model reliable communication link by using redundancy. This study also provides an efficient failover mechanism to implement redundant links. This strategy is intended to provide the reliable communication and to protect the established communication link.

▼ The human health impacts of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in home environments remain poorly understood. To better understand the association between NTM colonization of POU sources in homes and MAC pulmonary disease (MAC PD), we continued a case-control study of Washington and Oregon residents who have been diagnosed with MAC PD and population controls matched by age, gender, and geography. Environmental samples were collected from bathroom faucets, kitchen faucets, shower aerosols, indoor soil, and outdoor soil. Mycobacterial load in these samples was quantified by using bacteriological culture and PCR. NTM isolates obtained from 30 to 40 matched sets of case and control homes (depending on POU source) were quantitatively compared in three conditional logistic regression models with varying levels of control for confounding. An age-adjusted conditional logistic regression analysis of NTM isolates from shower aerosols shows that the homes of cases had higher odds (odds ratio, 3.67, 95% confidence interval, 1.16-11.53) of having NTM colonization compared to the homes of their matched controls. Associations for the other POU sources remain uncertain; the odds ratios estimated for other POU sources were consistently greater than one, but with wide confidence intervals, limiting the conclusions that can be drawn without further data. To better understand what house and homeowner characteristics may affect the colonization of NTM in homes in water POU sources, we also conducted an exploratory analysis utilizing the previous case-control study as a cross-sectional study using various logistic and linear regressions. Associations for various predictor variables relating to house or homeowner characteristics to NTM colonization remain uncertain; however, the large effect estimates and wide confidence intervals suggest that more data in a future study would improve precision and potentially be able to better detect associations. To our knowledge, this is the first etiologic epidemiological study on the association between NTM colonization of a specific household site and human disease. Previous studies were unable to connect the exposure site to pulmonary disease. The results implicate shower aerosols as a potentially significant source of NTM exposure in homes. While we were unable to detect associations between house and homeowner characteristics and NTM colonization in our exploratory analysis, these characteristics should be included in future study designs with the help of a qualified technical expert.

▼ In most countries around the world, water is treated physically and chemically to a quality that is safe for human consumption. In spite of these efforts, every year people die as a consequence of drinking water-associated disease outbreaks. Legionella is arguably the deadliest pathogen in drinking water in the US and efforts are underway to reduce the likelihood of infecting potable water consumers.
One of the primary factors to measure water quality degradation is water age. Water quality degrades with the time that the water sits in pipes. Over time, the residual disinfectant decays, disinfectant by products are created and the water becomes more susceptible to pathogen regrowth. This concern is not limited in the distribution systems but carries over to residential
premise plumbing system. A key factor affecting water age in the premises is fixtures’ idle times. As a result, poorly designed plumbing layouts and intermittent usage patterns may lead to high residence times.
In the present study, a methodology was developed to numerically quantify water age in residential
premise plumbing systems. The scheme is composed of a hydraulic solver, EPANET with modifications, a demand stochastic simulator, SIMDEUM-UA, and a plumbing layout generator based on CAD models. This method was used to determine layout design practices that contribute to lower water ages. The layout is shown to have a significant impact on water age. Modified layouts reduced the water age metrics of absolute maximum age, mean maximum and mean water by up to 76%, 66% and 58%, respectively. A best practice is to connect the water closets at the end of the
premise distribution branches.
The effect of water heater types on residence times was also assessed. It was found that instant or on demand heater helps reduce water age across all layouts for all the metrics, at both the outlet and the point of connection of the fixture to the distribution system. To further decrease water age, auto-flushers were installed on certain nodes, as the USEPA (2016) recommends flushing the system at regular intervals, and further if combined with a flush of hot water at a temperature of at least 60 °C (140 °F), it would help sterilize the hot system between the heater and the flusher as recommended by the WHO (2007). Proposed methods to implement these so-called hot super-flushing were discussed for future research. However, none of the hydraulic approaches proposed here impact the “last foot” of pipe connecting plumbing fixtures with the
premise distribution pipes.
Lastly, when comparing the resulting pressures using the simulated demands against the peak demand estimates with flows from the plumbing code, code pressures are always lower than the simulated ones. This may indicate that the design method conservatively overestimates demands. Nonetheless, oversized pipes are detrimental for water age and should be avoided, as greater demands are required to flush the system.

▼ The length of pipe between the water main and the point of use (POU), known as
premise plumbing, has a direct impact on public health. However, relatively little is known about factors that affect the microbial quality in
premise plumbing. Although microbial quality typically degrades during stagnation, little research is present linking factors such as building age and level of usage to the extent to which stagnation occurs.
To gain insight into the effect of
premise plumbing service age on the level of microbial contamination in stagnant drinking water, water at the POU was analyzed. It was observed with statistical significance (p
Two rapidly measurable parameters (free chlorine and temperature) were analyzed for their suitability in use for indicating the extent of drinking water stagnation at the POU. Because of the seasonal variability of temperature in water supply, water temperature was not found to be a suitable indicator of stagnancy. Free chlorine, however, was found to be a suitable indicator of stagnancy. Free chlorine concentrations were also linked to heterotrophic plate counts. Additionally, the effect of pipe size on free chlorine concentration after overnight stagnation was analyzed. These results were used to show flushing tap water for 15s for every 100ft of 0.5in copper piping in order to reduce microbial contamination is a simple potential risk-mitigation strategy for
premise plumbing users.
Further analyses focused on the chlorine decay rates in copper pipes. Chlorine was found to decay faster in newly built
premise plumbing systems than old systems and fastest in unused copper pipes. The effect of increased usage was also analyzed; increasing the usage in older
premise plumbing systems decreased the chlorine decay rate while the same increase in usage in newer systems increased the chlorine decay rate.

▼ Residential water heating is linked to the primary source of waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States, and accounts for greater energy demand than the combined water/wastewater utility sector. To date, there has been little research that can guide decision-making with regards to water heater selection and operation to minimize energy costs and the likelihood of waterborne disease.
We have outlined three types of systems that currently dominate the marketplace: 1) a standard hot water tank with no hot water recirculation (STAND), 2) a hot water tank with hot water recirculation (RECIRC), and 3) an on-demand tankless hot water system with no hot water recirculation (DEMAND).
Not only did the standard system outperform the hot water recirculation system with respect to temperature profile during flushing, but STAND also operated with 32 – 36% more energy efficiency. Although RECIRC did in fact save some water at the tap, when factoring in the energy efficiency reductions and associated water demand, RECIRC actually consumed up to 7 gpd more and cost consumers more money. DEMAND operated with virtually 100% energy efficiency, but cannot be used in many circumstances dependent on scaling and incoming water temperature, and may require expensive upgrades to home electrical systems.
RECIRC had greater volumes at risk for pathogen growth when set at the lower end of accepted temperature ranges, and lower volumes at risk when set at the higher end when compared to STAND. RECIRC also tended to have much lower levels of disinfectant residual (40 -850%), 4-6 times as much hydrogen, and 3-20 times more sediment compared to standard tanks without recirculation. DEMAND had very small volumes of water at risk and relatively high levels of disinfection.
A comparison study of optimized RECIRC conditions was compared to the baseline modes of operation. Optimization increased energy efficiency 5.5 – 60%, could save consumers 5 – 140% and increased the disinfectant residual up to 560% higher disinfectant residual as compared to the baseline RECIRC system. STAND systems were still between 3 – 55% more energy efficient and could save consumers between 19 - 158 annual on water and electrical costs. Thus, in the context of “green” design, RECIRC systems provide a convenience to consumers in the form of nearly instant hot water, at a cost of higher capital, operating and overall energy costs.
