1. Braggs, Sierra. Earth First!: the rise of eco-action.

Degree: MA, Social Science: Environment & Community, 2012, Humboldt State University

This thesis examines the change in Earth First! praxis elaborated by North Coast Earth First! (in Northern California) from 1985-1990 in order to identify how Judi Bari???s theory of ???revolutionary ecology??? emerged as political force from within a movement founded upon wilderness preservationism and the exclusion of people from nature, creating space for alliances between environmental activists and timber workers to emerge and exposing an emerging politics of encounter underway in the North Coast. Assessments of Earth First! typically focus on its proliferation of direct action interventions against industrial destruction and Judi Bari???s leadership in diverging from traditional EF! wilderness preservationism, most notably her attempts to build alliances between EF! activists and timber workers. To date, scholars have failed to assess how the structural formation of EF! as a decentralized anti-authoritarian non-organization has facilitated not only the proliferation of direct action interventions against industrial destruction, but also a highly reflexive radical environmental praxis. I argue that the shift toward what Jonathan London has termed a ???post-wilderness environmentalism??? was fostered by a ???culture of anarchism??? combined with an emergent ???politics of encounter??? operating within the larger Earth First! movement. The thesis elaborates a better understanding of Earth First! organizational structure, movement agenda, and cognitive praxis, highlighting open membership, oppositional systems of information, insurgent learning spaces, and commitments to anti-authoritarian politics as critical to an innovative radical environmental praxis. 2. Santos, Luciana Eliza dos. A trajetória anarquista do educador João Penteado: leituras sobre educação, cultura e sociedade.

Degree: Mestrado, Educação, 2009, University of São Paulo

With the accomplishment of the libertarians schools in Sao Paulo, in the first decade of the twentieth century, this study insert the trajectory of anarchist educator João Penteado in the in the history of Brazilian education.. This educator was the responsible of the operation of Modern School No 1, created in 1912, as a model school, by a group of free thinkers, anarchists and anticlericais interested in the establishing a school separate from those prevailing at that time as the state and religious, with the target privileged means popular. This school, like many others libertarians schools, was inspired by the experience of the Catalan educator Francisco Ferrer y Guardia, who created and founded a Modern School in Barcelona, in 1901. The social trajectory of Penteado, seized in the search historiographic documentary primary sources, is marked by cultural and educational practices deeply rooted in libertarian ideals, becoming visible in his thought the consistency of design of the world over the years. To highlight some of the reasons of this educational perspective with bases on historical antecedents of the brazilian educational field adds new elements in the discussion on shape school. Thus, the meaning and social function of contemporary school may be asked - and reflected by a revolutionary vision of human relations.

The study focuses on how Catalan refugees in France managed to hold a strong political and cultural identity, between the years 1939 and 1977, despite their minority position within the Spanish republican exile. This research is based on the use of varied sources - French and Catalan, public and private, written or oral - aims to contribute to the analysis of the identical dynamics of the exiles. It gets organized according to a chronological plan in three parts. The first one is attached to the political and cultural inheritances of a previous and rather coherent immigration to show the way of a Catalan-republican identity in which the exiles of 1939 will be indebted. The second part deals with period 1939-1945, terrible in terms of experiences and decisive in the testing of a republican identity, it relegates in the background the strictly Catalan peculiarity and puts in perspective the impact of the Catalano-Castillan dispute. The double trauma of the defeat and the hostile reception marks for a long time the exilés and their representation of France. The third part examines how, with return in the peace and in spite of the squandering of the hopes of victorious return in the country, the Catalan popular exile, relieved of its intellectual fringe left for America or returned in Spain, crosses the test of time, launched in a complex process of identity reorganization on an integration background.
