▼ CONFLICT, CHANGE, AND CONVERSION: FOUR DECADES OF CONVERSION AMONG BAPTISTS IN CROATIA 1970-2010 Eric Kane Maroney, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2015 Chair: Dr. M. David Sills Evangelicals represent a tiny minority in Croatia. During the period of conflict and change that accompanied the emergence of the Republic of Croatia during the 1990s, evangelical groups experienced significant growth. This movement has not been formally studied. Understanding this movement has significant benefit to those seeking to further the Kingdom of God in Croatia, but also beyond, as the issues of ethnic identity, nationalism, and civil strife are not unique to Croatia. The focus of research is the from 1970 to 2010, the two decades prior to the emergence of the Republic of Croatia and the two decades that followed, and is limited to Croatian Baptists. Chapter 1 introduces the subject of the study and makes a case for the research. The Chapter 2 seeks to answer the question of the Croatian religious identity from an historical perspective. The chapter begins with an overview of demographics from the four decades with which this research project is concerned, including ethnicity, language, and religion. Next, the geography of Croatia is reviewed. Subsequently, the religious history of the Croatian people is detailed, providing insight into their conversion resistance. Finally, a brief overview of the Croatian Baptist history is provided. Chapter 3 seeks to provide an understanding of conversion as related to conversion experience. The first part of the chapter details differing perspectives on conversion. The second part of the chapter examines two typologies of conversion experience, before examining two central aspects of conversion experience: context and means. The chapter concludes with an examination of the three primary conversion contexts included in the research: Traditionalist, Materialist, and Baptist. Chapter 4 presents the research data beginning with a description of the survey instrument, followed by a description of the methodology of application. Following this introduction to the instrument and method, the results of the research are presented. First, the results of the entire survey for the whole of Croatia are provided. Second, the results are examined for the impact of conflict and change on conversion. Chapter 5 concludes the dissertation with seven conversion resistance factors and five recommended evangelical responses to this resistance. Advisors/Committee Members: Sills, Michael D (advisor).

▼ Croatia is among countries that are still in process of institutional restructuring. Recent global economic crisis in Croatia is still very much present. Many country reports on Croatia are witnessing of the slow reform process in the country. Major reforms have been omitted. Research, in the area of transition is recognizing importance of informal institutions (behavioral norms) over transition process whose importance, according to researchers (Acemoglu, Helmke, Rodrik, etc), has been ignored. North (1993) states that informal institutions are rooted in culture and as such imbued to slow change. In line with that, the thesis work is to analyse features of Croatian transition in regard to informal institutions and thereafter investigate the impact of interaction between informal institutions and political power over reform process. Case- study is divided into two parts: institutional and structural analysis of Croatian transition based on country and cross-country analyses; and historic economic development of the Dalmatia region. The result have shown existence of two informal modes of behaviour, distinguished as town respective hinterland culture, enforced primarily by the colonial nature of political administration, frequency of change in political powers and impact of dominant religious organisation. It is evident that informal institutions in the Croatian transition process have a dominant role. These conflicting modes of behavior are infiltrated into the mindset of the power structures in the society (one inclined to divergent-, and the other inclined to convergent outcome in relation to post-industrial types of formal institutions). The challenge for Croatia is how to reach political equilibrium that is supportive of faster reforms towards institutions present in the developed countries. It is to assume that de jure power of the hinterland culture is declining while de facto could be traced in the cases of corruption, which makes difficult to identify the current power position of the de facto power on national level. On the regional level, de facto power has infiltrated de jure power. The sensitiveness of the current political instability is due to the unstable political consensus on national level (conflict between two cultures within de jure power). Instability´s persistency have slowed reforms down and underrated credibility of the formal institutions. The additional reinforcement mechanism, such as Haag Tribunal’s proclamation of the homeland war as being a product of the criminal organisation has created a new space for competing modes of behavior to persist despite de jure affords to combat corruption. Thesis came to conclusion that, addressing reforms from top-down might not create an effect as local political powers are inclined to the competing modes of behavior, enforcing it over majority, majority that lacks trust in the state´s de jure power. Future research is needed to understand how these two levels can be coordinated towards the same political equilibrium that is in favor of convergence…

▼ The aim of this thesis was to understand the factors that influence local peoples' initial involvement and participation in building peace in Croatia. This aim was met through the analysis of narratives of 24 local peace-builders in Croatia. The time covered in this study with regard to participants' initial participation and involvement ranges from 1990 to 2002. Peace-builders, those who are actively involved in working for peace in times of war, are identified as individuals who approach to conflict constructively, seeking to prevent and/or redirect its destructive outcomes by applying non-violent means. Peace-building, this thesis refers to as activities that deal with the effects of war on people and their social worlds while also aiming to create conditions for the prevention of recurring conflict. A view put forward is that, in addition to the end of war violence and structures that promote human wellbeing, peace also has a personal dimension. Therefore, personal acts that challenge and create alternatives to war violence are important in peace-building, and thus, it is important to understand more about factors that influence local people's participation in building peace. The literature that concern these factors comes mostly from literature on women peace-builders, although the literature on social and peace movements provides broader analytical categories that can be applied to explain peace-building in a country at war. The narrative analysis revealed three main factors influencing interviewees' beginnings as peace-builders, namely, their own imposed experiences of war, beliefs in their agency and connectedness, and informal social networks. These factors can be summarised as follows: First, peace-builders react to their experience of war as an imposition on their lives in that (i) they cannot identify with the war and have an emotional reaction to that experience; (ii) they experience interruptions in their planned and/or expected course of life, and (iii) they witness impacts of war on relationships. This experience can be across a continuum of lived experiences of war: living in a country under war conditions; being concerned for, or witnessing, significant others being harmed by war; and being harmed or under the threat of being personally harmed. Second, peace-builders believe (i) that they can make a change and do something about the situation - that is, they have a strong belief in their own agency, and (ii) in connectedness with people of different ethnicity and from different places. Third, peace-builders have social networks that (i) provide them with emotional and intellectual support, and (ii) provide sites from which action is created and implemented.

This body of research attempts to investigate the role of shopping typologies and their reciprocal relation with (ex-) Yugoslav Croatia, through (three) exemplary cases (the neighborhood department store, the city department store and the shopping center) by looking at three themes such as: their creation of centrality, the continuation of the public and the composition of program. The three main cases are Nama Trnsko, robna kuca RI, and Koteks and Gripe sports- and shopping center. It describes how the various types of shopping-buildings had either an installing or introductory role for the public/city/neighborhood around them; and/or an enhancing or supporting role, enhancing existing movement/centrality within the center/public. The main discussed themes in existing discourse (within as well as outside of HR) are housing and education, but ideologically the shopping typologies functioned as another trajectory towards modernity. On the architectural level, the types adopted certain ‘traditional’ or typical department store elements, such as the arcade and open plan. Increasingly implementing regional elements. On an urban scale, it would (literally) take the center position in new neighborhoods but (sometimes simultaneously) enhancing circulation flows in the area is not uncommon, as well as offering a mixed program that goes beyond shopping alone. As a final evaluation, the research shows the typologies have certainly evolved since then. The public character or role of the typologies has partially evaporated, and as urban entities they have become (partially) isolated. Often, what was once a single department store, has now split up into several smaller shops within the original building or have gone (partially) out of use. The shift from socialist to neo-liberal economy (accompanied by a violent transition) has altered the role of the typologies. The question arises, did the typologies as a trajectory to emancipation succeed? Have the fantastic visions of modernist architects and urbanists given society the physical structure to emancipation?

▼ The purpose of this work is to examine the origins and development of Croat nationalism in the light of the Croat-Magyar relations from the period of Enlightened Absolutism to the eve of the revolutionary year of 1848. Since the development of Croat nationalism was strongly influenced by the Magyar national movement of that period, the bulk of this discussion is devoted to an analysis of the Croat-Magyar controversy caused by the Magyars' desire to magyarize the Croat nation. The main struggle between the two opposing forces took place in the Common Diet composed of the delegates from both nations. However, the Croat national movement itself originated among the young native intellectuals who, as a rule, did not have any direct influence on the proceedings of the Croat legislative house, the Sabor. Under the influence of the Czech, Slovak and Polish nationalists, these intellectuals rendered an invaluable service to the Croat nation. Their work resulted in Croatia's cultural renaissance which subsequently served as the basis for the struggle against Hungary. The author presupposes that the reader possesses adequate knowledge of Croat history in general and of the period discussed in particular. Therefore no attempt has been made to describe or explain some fundamental aspects of Croatia's political and cultural history. Any such endeavour would inevitably remove us from the topic and would be inconsistent with the task of this work. Chapters I and II deal with the background of the problem. Chapter I offers a brief explanation of Croatia's political status within the Habsburg Monarchy. Chapter II describes the origins and background of the Croat national movement which developed, following the year 1832, as the Illyrian Movement. It enables the reader to acquaint himself with the fundamentals and character of the Croat-Magyar controversy and with the political and cultural situation prevailing among the various Croat regions. Chapter III concentrates on the Illyrian Movement itself. It describes extensively the cultural renaissance of the Croats and points out the role and effects of the Illyrian Movement on the Croat-Magyar relations. Here again the author concentrates on the political effects of the cultural renaissance. The literary works of the Illyrians are mentioned and described in so far as they had a direct bearing upon the political situation in Croatia. In Chapter IV, the political nature of the struggle between the two nations reaches its peak. Following the formation of the first political parties and the crisis in the Croat national movement caused by the defeat of the Illyrians at the hands of the Magyarons in the election of 1845, the Croat national idea was finally emancipated. The Croat language finally became the official language for Croatia. Thus the main aim of the Illyrians was accomplished. In the last moment, Croatia emerged fully prepared to face the revolutionary year of 1848.

▼ This dissertation analyzes the social and spatial contradictions of European identity through an examination of daily economic and identity practices surrounding Croatia’s 2013 integration into the EU. Since its inception, the European Union (EU) has continuously redefined the social and geographic (b)orders of ‘Europe’. The EU promotes a ‘Europe’ that is culturally diverse, yet homogenous; geographically fixed, yet open to expansion. Member-states must prove their ‘European-ness’ by implementing policies and ideals that define ‘European’ ways of life, while EU citizens must negotiate how their own identities and daily practices fit in. As the EU and Croatian state seek to establish new ‘European’ norms, Croatians must negotiate how their identities (ethnic, gendered, religious, etc.) and economic practices fit within ‘authentic’ Croatian and European lifestyles. This dissertation demonstrates how Croatians identify certain practices and people for protection from Europeanization, often conceptualized as economic development. Simultaneously, less desirable people and practices are regulated or disciplined in favor of meeting ‘European’ expectations. These debates circle around the larger questions of what it means to be ‘Croatian’ versus, ‘European’, and whether the two identities can co-exist. I examine these issues as they have played out in Zagreb’s tržnice (open-air markets), which are important sites of daily economic and identity practices. I analyze the cultural, legislative, and economic changes that EU integration has meant for the organization and experience of the tržnice in daily and urban Croatia. My findings expose the multi-scalar tensions that occur through the processes of development and regionalization. My analyses contribute to understanding the debates surrounding Croatia’s EU integration and offer further insight into how individuals, communities, and states respond to key moments of geopolitical change. ▼ This research investigated the effects of secondary school teachers’ assessment practices on students’ perceptions of fairness in Croatia. It focused on the extent to which teachers implemented consistent assessment practices and made judgements of student achievements, and how this affected students’ perceptions. The need for assessment influences its creation and implementation, which in turn influences the outcomes. Teachers’ assessment of students is an ongoing practice in schools in Croatia, both officially and unofficially, and questions about consistent application have persisted. This research was motivated by a confrontation with a disgruntled student and set in motion an examination of teachers’ application of assessment criteria to determine whether the end result was judged to be fair. The research design was both empirical and quasi-ethnographic in interpreting teachers’ and students’ perceptions to fully understand the context. Student questionnaires, teacher interviews and teacher assessment documents were used to collect data and analyse the case studies, each represented by a teacher and two classrooms of students studying either Biology, Croatian or English. The participants comprised secondary school students from two respective high schools in Split. Students completed a questionnaire comprised of statements with Likert-scale responses modelled on the Student Perception of Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ), and open-ended questions based on a questionnaire developed at the Centre for Schooling and Learning Technologies (CSaLT). The SPAQ items were ranked according to five scales. At their interviews, teachers were asked to provide documents illustrating their assessment of students in their subjects. The documents were analysed to assist with interpreting the survey and interview data, and interestingly, not only revealed differences in responses between teachers and subjects, but also differences between the responses of students in two classes who were taught the same subject by the same teacher. Despite a positive assessment rating by students, the findings showed several inconsistencies compromised the fairness of teacher assessments, particularly in oral examinations, a substantial form of assessment for all subjects in Croatia. This research is the first of its kind and suggests that oral examination should be reviewed, and additional steps taken to improve consistency in teacher application of assessment. In the meantime, for as long as it continues, consistency can and should be enhanced to ensure fairer outcomes for students, since positive learning experiences are known to holistically inculcate enthusiastic and affirmative attitudes towards education.

▼ The dissertation examines Reconciliation in the context of Transitional Justice (TJ), where questions about the legacies of conflict are managed rather than resolved. As an international intervention objective, reconciliation is linked with requirements for justice and governance when operationalized through neoliberal models for individual accountability and regulation. The study explores the question of reconciliation in postwar Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Croatia under an international regime of accountability (as a form of TJ) that targeted the state, society and individuals. The dissertation focuses on local engagement and formulation of competing or complementary processes developed to manage the social outcome of war. The dissertation is based on seven years (2004-2011) of fieldwork into the actions of local NGOs in each state, dealing with the needs and grievances of victims from war in the Balkans, alongside the experiences of local practitioners and members of organizations. The thesis specifically maps international and local processes related to reconciliation over a twenty-year timeframe. The morally charged TJ paradigm often fails to consider the local interconnected experience of multiple processes when densely focused on ‘progressing’ the past as a legal project, and the societies as passive receptacles. The social consequences with experiencing war, then reform, convey a multi-layered entangling of each society in problems of the past and myopic approaches that often generate grievances rather than resolutions. Reconciliation becomes sequestered by multi-layered politics of transition, shrinking, translating, and shifting legacies in unintended ways. This dissertation reveals how people live and influence multiple processes developed to deal with suffering, exclusion, defeat, and containment of undesired legacies embodied by victims. This study has implications for our understanding of active local engagement in processes addressing the consequences of political violence; impacts of neoliberal transgovernmentality as a composite of international intervention; and reconciliation as the task of local NGOs. In accounting for such dynamics, the dissertation demonstrates how a multi-scalar study can help ground debates on reconciliation for consociationalised societies, neoliberal transnational governmentality, the practices of NGOs, and accountability, to help generate new approaches that further incorporate the struggles and experiences of citizens.

▼ Most archaeological sites yield few sub-adult remains and when recovered they are often too poorly preserved for analysis. A lack of children in the archaeological record limits our perspective on variation in human growth and development and the history of children in the past. In this context, the high representation of children in the abundant collection of remains from a Late Iron Age Illyrian necropolis on the island of Korčula, Croatia is somewhat curious and a remarkable resource. Is this curious pattern the result of an unusual preservation pattern, differential burial practices, or infanticide? Notably, large deposits of infants from Classical Antiquity and the Iron Age Mediterranean are controversially interpreted as the byproduct of infanticide. This study estimates age-at-death for 1177 isolated teeth from three tombs via assessment of dental development using Moorrees' and Irurita's systems, as well as Liversidge's tooth length regression formulas. The resulting relative age profiles are employed to test the null hypothesis that the assemblages are unusually preserved multiple-inhumation, family tombs, rather than tombs specifically designated for sub-adults or exclusively for the victims of infanticide. The unique size and quality of this sample allows for a refined reconstruction of age-at-death and examination of growth and development patterns in the Iron Age Adriatic. Despite, a lack of adult dental age estimates, the presence of adult post-crania and the low volume of remains suggests that Tomb 3 is a multiple inhumation family tomb. Alternatively, Tombs 1 and 7 appear to exclusively contain sub-adults, with a wide age range, who received differential burial treatment. Infanticide does not appear to be the impetus for any of the tombs, although the results do not preclude the possibility that some of the individuals included in the deposit were victims of infanticide. Future research will expand on these results with analysis of dental non-metric traits and post-cranial remains. ▼ My research concerns how the changing geopolitical positioning of the post-Yugoslav states has impacted on the lives and prospects of students and researchers in the natural sciences. The main focus is on scientists’ experiences and self-reporting, both of the situation at present and during the nineties, when scientific operations and scientists’ lives were disrupted by war and in the case of Belgrade, Serbia, UN sanctions against science. My fieldwork is centred on participant ethnography based at an institute in Belgrade, Serbia (the Belgrade Astronomical Observatory). However, throughout the thesis I trace and make connections between numerous other institutes and networks, as well as drawing on interview material and ethnography completed with students in Belgrade and Zagreb, Croatia. I analyse in particular on the impact of the recent wars, attempted ‘democratic transition’ and the current European economic crisis. My main argument is that whilst neoliberalisation and social changes over the past forty years have created opportunities for scientists globally, these opportunities were not evenly distributed. For scientists committed to living and working in the former Yugoslav region, these changes were often, but not always experienced as a hindrance; particularly as seen through the lens of reperipheralisation, which strongly relates to the context of war and recent scientific isolation. In the introduction and first chapter of the thesis, I detail the background in light of which ethnographic insights in the later chapters make sense. I then examine how scientists’ practices and experiences reflect, relate to, shape and have been shaped by not only post-Yugoslav discursive hegemonies (chapter two), but also disciplinary changes (chapter three), local academic hierarchies and conventions (chapter four), the socialist legacy and attempted neoliberal ‘transition’ (chapters two, three, four and five), academic traditions (chapter six) and national cosmology (chapters two and six). The thesis also attempts to make an original contribution to anthropological studies of science, in particular engaging with Latour and Woolgar’s (1986) work on credibility (chapter three), literature on science and its publics (chapter five) and the historiography of science (chapter six). The thesis also draws heavily on anthropological theory from other traditions in the discipline, including Marxist anthropology and theories of hegemony (chapter two), Bourdieu’s (1984) work on education (chapters two and four), Verdery’s (1995) analysis of cultural politics under socialism (chapters three and five) and exchange theory, including Graeber’s (2011) work on debts and indebtedness (chapter six). One key theoretical claim advanced through the ethnographic material is that an anthropological study working with scientists in what Blagojević (2010) terms the ‘semiperiphery’, and where a series of violent wars had recently took place, warrants a human focus, namely on the scientists and how they collectively dealt with and coped with…

▼ Humanity has a long standing fascination with death and disaster. Although dying has been partially sequestered from many western societies, death itself is the one true anthropological constant, encountered by every society through architecture, literature, language, institutions and many other human practices. Our relationships with death have very unique spatial characteristics, brought to life for this thesis by a phenomenon known as 'thanatourism'. Thanatourism is defined as travel to a site primarily or partially motivated by a desire to encounter death or disaster (Seaton, 1996) and, as a niche tourism practice, it has flourished in recent decades. This growth has variously been attributed to the search for authenticity in tourism, the dedifferentiation of leisure, secularisation, the sequestration of dying from society, and theories of postmodern leisure consumption. This thesis further develops the frameworks used to conceptualise thanatourism by exploring the commodification of war space throughout ex-Yugoslavia. The 1990s Yugoslav War was the largest conflict in Europe post World War Two. The conflict left deep scars on the landscape; casualties numbered approximately 100,000, mass civilian murder and rape occurred and thousands of shells destroyed the major towns, cities and cultural artefacts. Leaders were indicted for genocide and the mass media kept the conflict at the forefront of Western attention for many years. Following the conflict, Yugoslavia disintegrated into seven Republics (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia). Although tourists quickly returned to the war damaged regions, many of the returning tourists seek to encounter the sites associated with the conflict. These battlefields, shell pocked buildings and cemeteries quickly evolved from war scars to tourist attractions. This thesis interrogates the process by which entrepreneurs, policy makers and tourists facilitate the commodification of death and disaster. Advisors/Committee Members: Strohmayer, Ulf (advisor).

▼ This thesis talks about the migration situation in two countries in the Balkans, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina (Bosnia). In 2015 Europe experienced an influx of forced migrants, leading to different types of reactions and changes in policies in European countries and in the European Union (EU). In the media, these events were titled as the migration or refugee “crisis” and the media got an important role in defining the “crisis”. Although the number of incoming migrants has decreased, there are still people leaving their homes and turning towards Europe. The journey of some of these people has stopped at the outside border of the EU, as is in the case of the border with Croatia and Bosnia. This study looks into two medias, HINA from Croatian and Bosnia Daily from Bosnia and analyzes their narratives on the migration situation in the area. The research material was collected during summer 2019, as summer is the time for increased migratory movements. In the study, I examine the migration situation trough the concept of forced migration and reflect the different terms used in the context of migration, such as refugee, asylum seeker, and illegal migrant. I also discuss migrant management, such as the refugee and migrant camps, and how it affects on the agency of the migrants and its representations in media. The previous studies have shown that instead of giving voice to the migrants, the media often uses statements of the state officials and authorities when writing about migration. These sources tend to exploit securitization arguments when justifying the policies towards migrants, and therefore I also write about the discussion regarding the securitization of migration in the media. I also talk about the reactions of the EU and its Member States by addressing the EU’s Turkey Agreement as well as the “Hot Spot Approach”, as the EU is considered as an important actor within the “crisis”. I use narrative analysis to study the dominant narratives regarding the migration situation in the research material. As a result, I have created four dominant narratives: 1) Croatian border protection 2) Porous and impassable borders 3) Ethnically divided armed forces against migration 4) Managing migration. The first narrative portrays Croatia taking its position by the EU’s external border seriously, meaning it protects the border from irregular entries with any means necessary. The second narrative looks at the situation from Bosnia’s perspective and presents Bosnia as suffering from its neighbor countries policies. The third narrative addresses the complex administrational situation in Bosnia which effects on migration management in the country and is used as an advantage by one of the ethnic groups in the country. Finally, the fourth narrative talks about the challenges of migration management, focusing on a camp established in Bosnia.
