▼ The fact that a disordered material is not constrained in its properties in the same way as a crystalline one presents significant and yet largely untapped potential for novel material design. However, unlike their crystalline counterparts, disordered solids are not well understood. Though currently the focus of intense research, one of the primary obstacles is the lack of a theoretical framework for thinking about disorder and its relation to mechanical properties. To this end, we study a highly idealized system composed of frictionless soft spheres at zero temperature that, when compressed, undergos a jamming phase transition with diverging length scales and clean power-law signatures. This critical point is the cornerstone of a much larger ``jamming scenario" that has the potential to provide the essential theoretical foundation that is sorely needed to develop a unified understanding of the mechanics of disordered solids. We begin by showing that jammed sphere packings have a valid linear regime despite the presence of a new class of ``contact nonlinearities," demonstrating that the leading order behavior of such solids can be ascertained by linear response. We then investigate the critical nature of the jamming transition, focusing on two diverging length scales and the importance of finite-size effects. Next, we argue that this jamming transition plays the same role for disordered solids as the idealized perfect crystal plays for crystalline solids. Not only can it be considered an idealized starting point for understanding the properties of disordered materials, but it can even influence systems that have a relatively high amount of crystalline order. As a result, the behavior of solids can be thought of as existing on a spectrum, with the perfect crystal at one end and the jamming transition at the other. Finally, we introduce a new principle for disordered solids wherein the contribution of an individual bond to one global property is independent of its contribution to another. This principle allows the different global responses of a disordered system to be manipulated independently of one another and provides a great deal of flexibility in designing materials with unique, textured and tunable properties.

▼ Among the many non-equilibrium processes encountered in nature we deal with two different but related aspects. One is the non-equilibrium relaxation process that is at the origin of \'aging phenomena••, and the other one is a non-equilibrium phase transition, called ••dynamic phase transition••. One of the main purposes of our research is to explore more realistic situations than studied previously. Indeed, in the study of aging phenomena certain kinds of disorder effects are considered, and we introduce the ••surface•• as a spatial boundary to the system undergoing the dynamic phase transition. In order to observe these processes as clearly as possible, we study in both cases simple spin systems. Using Monte Carlo simulations we first investigate aging in three-dimensional Ising spin glasses as well as in two-dimensional Ising models with disorder quenched to low temperatures. The time-dependent dynamical correlation length L(t) is determined numerically and the scaling behavior of various two-time quantities as a function of L(t)/L(s) is discussed where t and s are two different times. For disordered Ising models deviations of L(t) from algebraic growth law show up. The generalized scaling forms as a function of L(t)/L(s) reveal a generic simple aging scenario for Ising spin glasses as well as for disordered Ising ferromagnets. We also study the local critical phenomena at a dynamic phase transition by means of numerical simulations of kinetic Ising models with surfaces subjected to a periodic oscillating field. We examine layer-dependent quantities, such as the period-averaged magnetization per layer Q(z) and the layer susceptibility ¥ö(z), and determine local critical exponents through finite size scaling. Both for two and three dimensions, we find that the values of the surface exponents differ from those of the equilibrium critical surface. It is revealed that the surface phase diagram of the non-equilibrium system is not identical to that of the equilibrium system in three dimensions. ▼ In this dissertation, I study critical phenomena and phase transitions in systems with long-range interactions, in particular, the ferromagnetic Ising model with quenched site dilution and the asset exchange model with growth. In the site-diluted Ising model, I focus on the effects of quenched disorder on both critical phenomena and nucleation. For critical phenomena, I generalize the Harris criterion for the mean-field critical point and the spinodal, and find that they are not affected by dilution, whereas pseudospinodals are smeared out. For nucleation, I find that dilution reduces the lifetime of the metastable state. I also investigate the structure of nucleating droplets in both nearest-neighbor and long-range Ising models. In both cases, nucleating droplets are more likely to occur in spatially more dilute regions. I also modify the asset exchange model to include different types of economic growth, such as constant growth and geometric growth. For constant growth, one agent eventually gets almost all the wealth regardless of the growth rate. For geometric growth, the wealth distribution depends on the way that the growth is distributed among agents, which is represented by the parameter 𝛾. For the evenly distributed growth, 𝛾=0, and as 𝛾 increases, the growth in the total wealth is distributed preferentially to richer agents. For 𝛾=1, the wealth of every agent grows at a rate that is linearly proportional to his/her wealth. I find a phase transition at 𝛾=1. For 𝛾<1, there is an rescaled steady state wealth distribution and the system is effectively ergodic. In this state, the wealth at all ranks grows exponentially in time and inequality stays constant. For 𝛾>1, one agent eventually obtains almost all the wealth, and the system is not ergodic. For 𝛾=1, the dynamics of the poor agents' wealth is similar to that of a geometric random walk. In addition, I elucidate the effects of unfair trading, inhomogeneity in agents, modified growth which only depends on richest 1% agents' wealth, and a finite range of wealth exchange.

▼ We investigate properties of various conformally invariant quantum systems, especially from the point of view of the conformal bootstrap. First, we study twist line defects in three-dimensional conformal field theories. Numerical results from lattice simulations point to the existence of such conformal defect in the critical 3D Ising model. We show that this fact is supported by both epsilon expansion and the conformal bootstrap calculations. We find that our results are in a good agreement with the numerical data. We also make new predictions for operator dimensions and OPE coefficients from the bootstrap approach. In the process we derive universal bounds on one-dimensional conformal field theories and conformal line defects. Second, we analyze the constraints imposed by the conformal bootstrap for theories with four supercharges in spacetime dimension between 2 and 4. We show how superconformal algebras with four Poincaré supercharges can be treated in a formalism applicable to any, in principle continuous, value of d and use this to construct the superconformal blocks for any dimension between 2 and 4. We then use numerical bootstrap techniques to derive upper bounds on the conformal dimension of the first unprotected operator appearing in the OPE of a chiral and an anti-chiral superconformal primary. We obtain an intriguing structure of three distinct kinks. We argue that one of the kinks smoothly interpolates between the d=2, N=(2, 2) minimal model with central charge c=1 and the theory of a free chiral multiplet in d=4, passing through the critical Wess-Zumino model with cubic superpotential in intermediate dimensions. Finally, we turn to the question of the analytic origin of the conformal bootstrap bounds. To this end, we introduce a new class of linear functionals acting on the conformal bootstrap equation. In 1D, we use the new basis to construct extremal functionals leading to the optimal upper bound on the gap above identity in the OPE of two identical primary operators of integer or half-integer scaling dimension. We also prove an upper bound on the twist gap in 2D theories with global conformal symmetry. When the external scaling dimensions are large, our functionals provide a direct point of contact between crossing in a 1D CFT and scattering of massive particles in large AdS. In particular, CFT crossing can be shown to imply that appropriate OPE coefficients exhibit an exponential suppression characteristic of massive bound states, and that the 2D flat-space S-matrix should be analytic away from the real axis.

▼ This work investigates features of critical phenomena in fluids. The canonical description of critical phenomena, inspired by the Ising model, fails to capture all features observed in fluid systems, specifically those associated with the density or compositional asymmetry of phase coexistence. A new theory of fluid criticality, known as "complete scaling", was recently introduced. Given its success in describing experimental results, complete scaling appears to supersede the previous theory of fluid criticality that was consistent with a renormalization group (RG) analysis of an asymmetric Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson (LGW) Hamiltonian. In this work, the complete scaling approach and the equation of state resulting from the RG analysis are shown to be consistent to order ε, where ε = 4 - d with d being the spatial dimensionality. This is accomplished by developing a complete scaling equation of state, and then defining a mapping between the complete scaling mixing-parameters and the coefficients of the asymmetric LGW Hamiltonian, thereby generalizing previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 025703 (2006)] on mean-field equations of state. The seemingly different predictions of these approaches are shown to stem from an intrinsic ambiguity in the interpretation of the ε-expansion at fixed order. To first order in ε it is found that the asymmetric correction-to-scaling exponent θ5 predicted by the RG calculations can be fully absorbed into the 2β exponent of complete scaling. Complete scaling is then extended to spatially inhomogeneous fluids in the approximation η=0, where η is the anomalous dimension. This extension enables one to obtain a fluctuation-modified asymmetric interfacial density profile, which incorporates effects from both the asymmetry of fluid phase coexistence and the associated asymmetry of the correlation length. The derived asymmetric interfacial profile is used to calculate Tolman's length, the coefficient of the first curvature correction to the surface tension. The previously predicted divergence of Tolman's length at the critical point is confirmed and the amplitude of this divergence is found to depend nonuniversally on the asymmetry of the correlation length. ▼ The nature of supercooled liquids and the glass transition has been debated by many scientists. Several theories have been put forth to describe the remarkable properties of this out-of-equilibrium material. Each of these theories makes specific predictions as to how the scaling of various transport properties in supercooled materials should behave. Given access to a large pool of high-quality supercooled liquid data we seek to compare these theories to one another. Moreover, we explore properties of a pair of models which are the basis for one particularly attractive theory - Chandler-Garrahan theory - and discuss the models' behavior in space-time and possible implications to the behavior of experimental supercooled liquids.Here we investigate the nature of dynamics in supercooled liquids using a two pronged approach. First we analyze the transport properties found in experiments and simulations of supercooled liquids. Then, we analyze simulation trajectories for lattice models which reproduce many of the interesting properties of supercooled liquids. In doing so, we illuminate several glass universalities, common properties of a wide variety of glass formers.By analyzing relaxation time and viscosity data for over 50 data sets and 1200 points, we find that relaxation time can be collapsed onto a single, parabolic curve. This collapse supports a theory of universal glass behavior based on facilitated models proposed by David Chandler and Juan Garrahan in 2003. We then show that the parabolic fit parameters for any particular liquid are a material property: they converge fast and are capable of predicting behavior in regions beyond the included data sets. We compare this property to other popular fitting schemes such as the Vogel-Fulcher, double exponential, and fractional exponential forms and conclude that these three forms result in parameters which are non predictive and therefore not material properties. Additionally, we examine the role of attractive forces in liquids by comparing simulations of a Lennard-Jones mixture, which contains both attractions and repulsions, with that of a Weeks-Chandler-Andersen mixture, which only retains repulsive forces. We show that within the framework of the parabolic collapse, these two liquids behave identically. This suggests that attractive forces do not play a key role in glassy dynamics. Rather, repulsive forces - as has been shown in dense liquids - play the largest contributing role in jamming systems into glassy states. We further investigate the predicted fragile-to-strong crossover in glass formers and find no compelling evidence for the crossover in bulk materials at this time.Additionally, we study ensembles of trajectories for a specific class of kinetically constrained models which reproduce the dynamic heterogeneity found in real glass formers. ▼ B cells are a crucial component of the mammalian adaptive immune system, and the B cell receptor (BCR) has a significant impact on the cellular fate and immunological response of the B cell. When foreign or self-antigens cluster the BCR, tyrosine residues associated with the receptor are phosphorylated by membrane anchored kinases. This process is initiated by an unknown mechanism and results in the activation of multiple signaling cascades. It is hypothesized that antigen bound BCR clusters create a domain of relatively ordered plasma membrane composition, and this domain acts to induce receptor phosphorylation by recruiting Lyn and other kinases. However, it is unclear if domains exist in the cell and unknown if domains could influence the activation state of receptors. The work in this thesis develops methods for quantitatively observing membrane probe partitioning around receptor clusters and provides evidence that a domain of relatively ordered membrane composition is created by clustered B cell receptors. Observations of domain formation show remarkable consistency with a critical fluctuation model for domain formation, and this model also reproduces receptor signal initiation in response to clustering the B cell receptor. Here, I apply multicolor super-resolution fluorescent microscopy to observe the distribution of membrane anchored probes around B cell receptors, and I demonstrate that a domain of altered membrane composition is present around the receptor clusters. To accomplish this task, I develop quantitative multi-color super-resolution microscopy techniques that report on absolute probe enrichment and depletion which can be performed in live or fixed cells. Applying these techniques to the BCR reveals that simple membrane-bound peptides are sorted around BCR clusters according to their phase preference in model systems. The membrane interacting regions of the phosphatase CD45 and the kinase Lyn are also differentially sorted by domains around BCR clusters, and applying these observations to a simulation containing fluctuating domains reproduces phosphorylation in response to BCR clustering. These results support a critical fluctuation model for domain formation and suggest that protein clustering may couple to membrane domains to perform a variety of tasks. ▼ The unifying theme of this dissertation is the use of correlations. In the first part (chapter 2), we investigate correlations in quantum field theories in de Sitter space. In the second part (chapters 3,4,5), we use correlations to investigate a theoretical proposal that real (observed in nature) transcriptional networks of biological organisms are operating at a critical point in their phase diagram. In chapter 2 we study the infrared dependence of correlators in various external backgrounds. Using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism we calculate loop corrections to the correlators in the case of the Poincare patch and the complete de Sitter space. In the case of the Poincare patch, the loop correction modifies the behavior of the correlator at large distances. In the case of the complete de Sitter space, the loop correction has a strong dependence on the infrared cutoff in the past. It grows linearly with time, suggesting that at some point the correlations become strong and break the symmetry of the classical background. In chapter 3 we derive the signatures of critical behavior in a model organism, the embryo of Drosophila melanogaster. They are: strong correlations in the fluctuations of different genes, a slowing of dynamics, long range correlations in space, and departures from a Gaussian distribution of these fluctuations. We argue that these signatures are observed experimentally. In chapter 4 we construct an effective theory for the zero mode in this system. This theory is different from the standard Landau-Ginsburg description. It contains gauge fields (the result of the broken translational symmetry inside the cell), which produce observable contributions to the two-point function of the order parameter. We show that the behavior of the two-point function for the network of N genes is described by the action of a relativistic particle moving on the surface of the N-1 dimensional sphere. We derive a theoretical bound on the decay of the correlations and compare it with experimental data. How difficult is it to tune a network to criticality? In chapter 5 we construct the space of all possible networks within a simple thermodynamic model of biological enhancers. We demonstrate that there is a reasonable number of models within this framework that accurately capture the mean expression profiles of the gap genes that are observed experimentally. ▼ Thermal expansion is an under-utilized physical property with enormous potential in its application to the study of classical critical phenomena. The Pippard relation scales the coefficient of volume thermal expansion multiplied by temperature with heat capacity in the vicinity of a continuous phase transition. This justifies the study of critical behavior, characterized by critical-exponent a, with the coefficient of volume thermal expansion instead of heat capacity. We evaluate potential advantages and disadvantages and develop strategies uniquely suited to the analysis of critical behavior exhibited by the coefficient of thermal expansion. The most notable disadvantages arise as a result of numerically differentiating thermal-expansion data to obtain its coefficient. In the course of assessing the detrimental effects of this procedure, we developed a critical expression for thermal expansion, with which we quantitatively evaluate the effect numerical differentiation has on the study of critical phenomena. Antiferromagnets are less susceptible than ferromagnets to long-range dipole contributions, which adjust critical behavior away from theoretical predictions. Therefore, three antiferromagnetic materials were selected to test the suitability of studying critical behavior with thermal expansion. Single crystals of CaMn ₂O ₄ and Bi ₂CuO ₄ were grown and characterized by methods described in careful detail. The coefficient of thermal expansion is studied along the principal crystallographic axes of each material demonstrating that the critical behavior exhibited along each axis is the same as that exhibited by the volume. Both transitions belong to the three-dimensional Ising universality class which settles a long-standing question by suggesting that Bi ₂CuO ₄ exhibits easy-axis anisotropy rather than easy-plane anisotropy. The thermal expansion of each material (as opposed to the coefficient of thermal expansion) is studied with our critical expression in order to increase the critical temperature range close to the Neel temperature. The limitations of studying the critical behavior of a polycrystalline sample are demonstrated when we investigate the antiferromagnetic transition of a-Mn. This element has a surprisingly complicated magnetic structure and our results constrain its transition to be in either the three-dimensional Heisenberg or n = 4 universality class. ▼ Various phenomena in our daily world exhibit similarities to epidemic spreading. Fashion or technical trends are referred to as viral when they reach a large part of a society. In general, trends, opinions, diseases and failure in social or technical networks are characterized by the fact that they spread from an ``infected'' source to a ``non-infected'' state. We use the term epidemic process to refer to the described variety of different spreading phenomena. In addition to infection processes, external influences such as media in the case opinion spreading among people also play a major role. In contrast to a simple contagion, where one source is sufficient to sustain spreading, there also exist complex contagion phenomena where multiple sources are required. Social opinion formation is often described by the latter process. Until now, different spreading models have been developed and applied to account for different numbers of sources. We propose a general contagion model which accounts for both external influences and different numbers of ``infectious'' sources. We show that our contagion model exhibits a novel characteristic critical behavior which we describe using mathematical concepts that have their origin in catastrophe theory. Besides the stationary critical behavior, we also verify dynamical universal behavior by analyzing the corresponding correlation and response functions. The identification of universal critical behavior allows to demonstrate similarities between epidemic models that appear different at first sight. Based on those similarities, it is possible to classify spreading models. This way of classifying models is closely related to the study of phase transitions in statistical physics. Typically, one studies an order parameter (e.g. the number of infected) as a function of a control parameter (e.g. infection rate). In many situations, one finds a transition point or critical point of the control parameter at which the order parameter starts growing. At this point, there exists a characteristic behavior of the order parameter as a function of the control parameter. Considerations like these allow to apply methods from statistical physics which are important for describing phase transitions of percolation and magnetic systems. We consider different applications after defining and classifying our general modeling framework. We use the gained insights from the analysis of our general contagion model to propose a model for political campaigns. The suggested campaign model accounts for the complex interplay between activists, persuadables, political clout, budget and costs. Furthermore, we also study the opinion formation process in online petitions by applying different time series analysis methods. The last two examples have their origin in the field of disease spreading. We describe a very effective method of targeted recovery of infected individuals, which makes it possible to drastically reduce the number of infected cases. A capacidade de um sistema sensorial detectar estímulos eficientemente é tradicionalmente dimensionada pela faixa dinâmica, que é simplesmente uma medida da extensão do intervalo de intensidades de estímulo para as quais a rede é suficientemente sensível. Muitas vezes, sistemas biológicos exibem largas faixas dinâmicas, que abrangem diversas ordens de magnitude. A compreensão desse fenômeno não é trivial, haja vista que todos os neurônios apresentam janelas de sensibilidade muito estreitas. Tentativas de explicação baseadas em argumentos de recrutamento sequencial dos neurônios sensoriais, com efeitos essencialmente aditivos, simplesmente não são realísticas, haja vista que seria preciso que os limiares de ativação das unidades também apresentassem um escalonamento por várias ordens de magnitude, para cobrir a faixa dinâmica empiricamente observada em nível macroscópico. Notavelmente, o modelo Kinouchi-Copelli (KC), que carrega o nome de seus idealizadores, mostrou que aquele comportamento pode ser um efeito coletivo (não aditivo) do conjunto de neurônios sensoriais. O modelo KC é uma rede de unidades excitáveis com dinâmicas estocásticas e acoplados segundo uma topologia de grafo aleatório. Kinouchi e Copelli mostraram que a taxa espontânea de disparo dos neurônios (ou atividade média) sinaliza uma transição de fase fora do equilíbrio do tipo ordem-desordem, e que exatamente no ponto crítico desta transição (em termos de um parâmetro ligado às características estruturais da rede) a sensibilidade a estímulos externos é máxima, ou seja, a faixa dinâmica exibe uma otimização crítica. Neste trabalho, investigamos como o ponto crítico depende da topologia, utilizando os modelos mais comuns das chamadas redes complexas. Além disso, estudamos computacionalmente os padrões de atividade (avalanches neuronais) exibidos pelo modelo, com especial atenção às mudanças qualitativas de comportamento devido às mudanças de topologia. Comentaremos também a relação desses resultados com experimentos recentes de monitoramento de dinâmicas neurais.

The capacity of a sensory system in efficiently detecting stimuli is usually given by the dynamic range, a simple measure of the range of stimulus intensity over which the network is sensible enough. Many times biological systems exhibit large dynamic ranges, covering many orders of magnitude. There is no easy explanation for that, since individual neurons present very short dynamic ranges isolatedly. Arguments based on sequential recruitment are doomed to failure since the corresponding arrangement of the limiar thresholds of the units over many orders of magnitude is unrealistic. Notably the so-called Kinouchi-Copelli (KC) model strongly suggested that large dynamic range should be a collective effect of the sensory neurons. The KC model is a network of stochastic excitable elements coupled as a random graph. O presente trabalho apresenta o efeito da substituição do érbio nas propriedades mecânicas de amostras texturizadas de Y Ba2Cu3O7. As referidas propriedades foram estudadas tanto ao longo de planos paralelos ao plano de condução ab, quanto ao longo dos planos a(b)c. As amostras foram caracterizadas por difração de raios-X, microscopia eletrônica de varredura, análise EDS, medidas de resistividade elétrica e medidas de magnetização. As propriedades mecânicas foram estudadas por indentação instrumentada e microdureza Vickers. O padrão de difração de raios-X e a análise EDS revelaram a presença das fases Y-123, Y-211 e BaCeO3. Notouse que a substituição do érbio não afetou as propriedades supercondutoras. Não foi observada correlação entre a dureza e a orientação dos planos. Contudo, o módulo elástico mostrou-se anisotrópico, sendo 10 % maior no plano a(b)c que no plano ab. A tenacidade à fratura também apresentou anisotropia. A adição de 5 % de érbio não evidenciou nenhuma mudança significativa nas propriedades mecânicas, reproduzindo o conhecido para o YBCO puro texturizado. Também, foi estudado o efeito das flutuações térmicas sobre a condutividade elétrica das amostras. Foram investigadas duas amostras com graus de desordem diferentes. Para analisar as leis de potência que regem a divergência da condutividade elétrica, nessas mesmas duas amostras, foram usadas a derivada da resistividade em função da temperatura (d=dT ) e a derivada logarítmica da condutividade em relação à temperatura (d(ln)=dT ). Para a amostra extremamente granular, foi observado um regime do expoente u 1:6 0:1, para a configuração J k ab. Para a amostra homogênea, as flutuações acima da temperatura crítica mostraram-se fortemente anisotrópicas: regimes Gaussianos foram observados para a configuração J ab e regimes genuinamente críticos para J k ab. Os dados também evidenciaram uma transição que ocorre em dois estágios, entretanto, não foram identificados regimes em lei de potência na aproximação do estado de resistência nula.

The effect of Er substitution on the mechanical properties of ab and a(b)c planes of melt-textured Y Ba2Cu3O7 is reported in the present work. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, resistivity measurements and mechanical properties by instrumented indentation and conventional Vickers measurement. The X-ray pattern and EDS analysis revealed the presence of Y-123, Y-211 and BaCeO3. Er substitution did not affect the superconducting properties. No difference in hardness was observed for the ab and a(b)c-plane. Elastic modulus of the a(b)c-plane was 10 % higher than of the ab-plane. Difference in indentation fracture toughness obtained by conventional Vickers indentation of the ab and a(b)c-planes was observed. The 5 % Er addition did not affect significantly the mechanical properties of melt-textured samples when compared with pure melt-textured Y Ba2Cu3O7. ▼ Sistemas de tamanho nito con nados entre geometrias de placas planas e paralelas, cujas superf cies de contorno est~ao sujeitas a condi c~oes de contorno de Dirichlet e Neumann, e separados por uma dist^ancia L foram analisados no espa co dos momentos. N os introduzimos uma representa c~ao modi cada para as autofun c~oes discretas e utilizamos campos escalares renormalizados em termos de partes de v ertice 1PI (do ingl^es \one-particle irreducible") sem massa e tamb em massivos. N os discutimos as multiplicidades nas regras de Feynman que surgem na constru c~ao dos diversos diagramas, o que e devido a escolha da representa c~ao das fun c~oes base, e apresentamos as condi c~oes de normaliza c~ao modi cadas. Para quase-momentos externos n~ao nulos, provamos que as condi c~oes de contorno de Neumann e de Dirichlet podem ser uni cadas em um unico formalismo. Discutimos os regimes de crossover dimensionais para estes e mostramos a correspond^encia com as condi c~oes de contorno peri odicas e antiperi odicas. Em particular, provamos que os efeitos de tamanho nito para Dirichlet e Neumann n~ao requerem necessariamente termos de superf cie, mas s~ao implementados n~ao-trivialmente nas regras de Feynman envolvendo apenas termos de bulk na Lagrangiana. Como uma aplica c~ao, calculamos, via esquema diagram atico, os expoentes cr ticos e , pelo menos, at e a ordem de dois loops. Mostramos que os ndices cr ticos s~ao os mesmos do sistema bulk (in nito), independentemente das condi c~oes de contorno. Em seguida, estendemos o nosso m etodo de an alise do tamanho nito para sistemas competitivos m-axiais no ponto cr tico de Lifshitz. Em uma abordagem inicial, consideramos nita uma das dire c~oes ao longo do subespa co sem competi c~ao e observarmos um comportamento semelhante com rela c~ao ao crossover dimensional de sistemas n~ao-competitivos. Para L su cientemente grande, calculamos os expoentes cr ticos 1, 1, 2 e 2 at e ordens de pelo menos dois loops com aux lio de uma aproxima c~ao especial para a regulariza c~ao das integrais de Feynman. Tais expoentes s~ao id^enticos aos do sistema in nito. Por m, analisamos sistemas competitivos arbitr arios do tipo Lifshitz, os quais apresentam diversos eixos de competi c~ao e podem ser tratados pelo modelo CECI, que e o caso mais geral dentre os modelos que exibem o ponto de Lifshitz como caracter stica. Para formular o problema das transi c~oes de fase nesses exemplos de sistemas complexos, introduzimos uma t ecnica de teoria de campo escalar de massa nula e aplicamos o m etodo de subtra c~ao m nima, como meio de renormaliza c~ao, para calcular, perturbativamente, os expoentes cr ticos do modelo CECI, no caso isotr opico (d = mn). Para o caso isotr opico desse modelo, conseguimos calcular os expoentes cr ticos exatamente at e O( 2 n) (at e O( 3 n) para a dimens~ao an^omala n). ▼ The goal of the Mandela27 project is to promote intercultural dialogue between South Africa and the European Union regarding historic cultural events that took place during the Apartheid era in South Africa. One facet of the Mandela27 project is the development of a digital graphic novel that should inform young adults about the emotional social phenomenon of conditions of prison life during the time of Nelson Mandela’s incarceration in a medium that they find engaging and entertaining. A review of literature revealed that there are currently no guidelines for creating digital graphic novels portraying emotional social phenomena. This study aims to develop guidelines for the design of digital graphic novels portraying emotional social phenomena using critical systems heuristics and human-computer interaction principles. This is achieved through a review of literature pertaining to digital graphic novels, human-computer interaction and emotion. Applicable guidelines from each of the aforementioned literature reviews are combined into a set of proposed guidelines which are incorporated into the design and development of the Mandela27 digital graphic novel. The design and development of the Mandela27 digital graphic novel will occur according to the five phases of action research. These phases of action research will be guided by critical systems heuristics in order to ensure that the needs of both those involved Ex-political prisoners and affected (target audience) are met. Ex-political prisoners are asked to relay their stories of incarceration in Robben Island Prison. Themes are created from the aforementioned stories and are incorporated into the narrative of the Mandela27 digital graphic novel. The developed digital graphic novel is evaluated by members of the target audience in order to evaluate its aesthetic appeal. Recommendations from the evaluation are incorporated into the design of the final version of the digital graphic novel. The final conclusions of the study are drawn by providing a list of proposed guidelines for the design of digital graphic novels portraying emotional social phenomena using critical systems heuristics and human-computer interaction principles. A digital graphic novel is created based on the principles of critical systems heuristics.

▼ Transition metal and related compounds have been extensively studied over the past several decades. These investigations revealed a wide range of behavior, encompassing colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), high-TC superconductivity, and magnetic semiconductivity, all of which continue to present fundamental challenges to the understanding of such phenomena. There is, however, a close correlation between such characteristics and the appearance of magnetic order. This correlation underlies the present study, which focuses on the magnetic and transport behavior of various Manganese (Mn), Iron (Fe) and Cobalt (Co) containing materials, with particular emphasis on the nature of the magnetic order they display and the critical exponents that characterize the accompanying phase transition. The magnetic and transport properties of two specific systems will be covered: first various doped manganites from the series (La,Pr)1-x(Ca,Ba)xMnO3, and second the magnetic semiconductors Fe0.8Co0.2Si and Ga0.98Mn0.02As. In the manganites, the influence of doping on; (i) the evolution of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) with composition; (ii) the universality class of the magnetic critical behavior associated with the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, which occurs in the vicinity of a MIT with which CMR is associated; (iii) the mechanisms underlying ferromagnetism across the MIT; (iv) the correlation between the appearance of a Griffiths-like phase and CMR, and (v) the origin of Griffiths-like phase have been investigated. Four different systems have been studied: La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.18 ≤ x ≤ 0.27), La1-xBaxMnO3 (x ≤ 0.33), (La1-yPry)0.7Ca0.3Mn16/18O3 (y ≤ 0.85), and Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (x = 0.27, 0.29). In Fe0.8Co0.2Si and Ga0.98Mn0.02As, the scaling between magnetization and conductivity has been the subject of ongoing debate. In bulk Fe0.8Co0.2Si, a novel scaling between the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the magnetization enables the anomalous Hall coefficient to be accurately determined. In turn, this enables the universality class for the transition to ferromagnetism to be established independently from the anomalous Hall conductivity. In an epitaxial (metallic) Ga0.98Mn0.02As microstructure, the magnetization has been indirectly determined from the AHE. Subsequent analysis yields magnetic critical exponents consistent with the Mean-Field model, direct support for which had previously been lacking. ▼ The present thesis deals with two independent projects and is consequently divided into two parts. The first part details a computational study of the fluid structure of ring-shaped molecules and their positional and orientational molecular organizations in different degrees of confinement, while the second part concerns an experimental study of phase behavior and interfacial phenomena in confined colloid-polymer systems. In the first part, ring-shaped molecules are studied using Monte Carlo simulation techniques in one, two and three dimensions. The model used to describe ring-shaped molecules is composed of hard-spheres linked together to form planar rigid rings. For rings of various sizes and for a wide range of densities, positional and orientational orderings are reported in forms of pair distribution functions of the ring centers and correlation functions of the ring normal orientations. Special emphasis is given to understand structural formation at interfaces, i.e., the structure and orderings of these molecules when they are confined to two dimensions. In a plane but the rings themselves are free to rotate around all axes, nematic ordering is observed at sufficiently high densities. In the second part, phase equilibria of confined aqueous colloid-polymer systems are studied experimentally using fluorescence microscopy. Aqueous mixtures of fluorescent polystyrene spheres and polyacrylamide are confined between a glass slide and a coverslip. The phase diagram is determined as a function of the colloidal and polymer concentrations. Liquid-liquid phase coexistence between a colloid-rich phase and a polymer-rich phase occurs at intermediate polymer concentrations, while liquid-solid phase coexistence between a polymer-rich liquid and a colloid-rich solid is observed at high polymer concentrations. Interfacial thickness and tension of the interface between these coexisting phases are measured using image analysis techniques. It is also observed that the colloid-rich solid and liquid domains coarsen mainly by Ostwald ripening.
