▼ This dissertation addresses the anomalous properties of water at high temperatures near the vapor-liquid critical point and at low temperatures in the supercooled liquid region. The first part of the dissertation is concerned with the concentration dependence of the critical temperature, density, and pressure of an aqueous sodium chloride solution. Because of the practical importance of an accurate knowledge of critical parameters for industrial, geochemical, and biological applications, an empirical equation for the critical locus of aqueous sodium chloride solutions was adopted in 1999 by the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) as a guideline. However, since this original Guideline on the Critical Locus of Aqueous Solutions of Sodium Chloride was developed, two new theoretical developments occurred, motivating the first part of this dissertation. Here, I present a theory-based formulation for the critical parameters of aqueous sodium chloride solutions as a proposed replacement for the empirical formulation currently in use. This formulation has been published in the International Journal of Thermophysics and recommended by the Executive Committee of IAPWS for adoption as a Revised Guideline on the Critical Locus of Aqueous Solutions of Sodium Chloride. The second part of the dissertation addresses a new concept, considering cold water as a supercritical solvent. Based on the idea of a second, liquid-liquid, critical point in supercooled water, we explore the possibility of supercooled water as a novel supercooled solvent through the thermodynamics of critical phenomena. In 2006, I published a Physical Review letter presenting a parametric scaled equation of state for supercooled-water. Further developments based on this work led to a phenomenological mean-field "two-state" model, clarifying the nature of the phase separation in a polyamorphic single-component liquid. In this dissertation, I modify this two-state model to incorporate solutes. Critical lines emanating from the pure-water critical point show how even small additions of solute may significantly affect the thermodynamic properties and phase behavior of supercooled aqueous solutions. Some solutes, such as glycerol, can prevent spontaneous crystallization, thus making liquid-liquid separation in supercooled water experimentally accessible. Le développement d'un modèle thermodynamique prédictif PPR78, basé sur le concept de contributions de groupes, a été entrepris afin de pouvoir prédire avec précision, le comportement des fluides pétroliers. PPR78 utilise l’équation d’état de Peng et Robinson et les règles de mélange de Van der Waals avec un seul coefficient d’interactions binaires kij, dépendant de la température. Cette approche est rigoureusement équivalente à l’utilisation de règles de mélange à compacité constante avec un modèle d’énergie de Gibbs molaire d’excès, gE, de type Van Laar. Pour développer ce modèle, une étude approfondie des équilibres entre phases fluides des systèmes binaires a été réalisée en deux temps. Dans un premier, une étude phénoménologique permet d'éclairer sous un jour nouveau la classification proposée par Van Konynenburg et Scott qui décrit qualitativement les comportements de ces systèmes. Dans un second temps, quelques principes généraux de calcul des diagrammes d’équilibre de phases isothermes, isobares et globaux sont exposés. L’étude de la stabilité thermodynamique globale occupe une place essentielle au sein de ces calculs. Une fois ces étapes préliminaires franchies, l’extension du modèle aux groupes CO2, N2, H2S et sulfhydryle est réalisée. Une bonne précision du modèle est obtenue pour décrire les systèmes binaires impliquant ces quatre groupes. Enfin, le comportement des fluides pétroliers est souvent prédit avec une précision de l'ordre de l'erreur expérimentale par PPR78

A predictive thermodynamic model, based on the group contribution concept, and called PPR78, has been developed in order to be able to predict, with high accuracy, the behaviour of petroleum fluids. PPR78 uses the Peng-Robinson equation of state with Van der Waals mixing rules and a temperature dependent binary interaction parameter kij. This method is the equivalent to the constant packing fraction mixing rules with a Van Laar excess Gibbs energy model (gE). To develop the model, an in-depth study on binary systems fluid phase equilibria, was carried out. It was divided into two parts. Firstly, a phenomenological study made a reappraisal of the Van Konynenburg and Scott classification possible. Secondly, some general rules for the calculation of isothermal, isobaric and global phase equilibrium diagrams were demonstrated. It is important to note that the study of the global thermodynamic stability is essential in the calculations. Once these preliminary steps were realized, the extension of the model to the CO2, N2, H2S and sulfhydryl groups was performed. The fluid phase behaviour of binary systems involving these four groups was accurately calculated by the PPR78 model. Finally, the properties of petroleum fluids were predicted by PPR78 with an accuracy close to the experimental uncertainty

▼ Artificial cementation of soft clays has been used for several years for different ground improvement projects. Although considerable work has been done to develop advanced machinery and techniques for the implementation of artificial cementation, less knowledge is available on the mechanisms involving the formation of the artificial structure and the resulting mechanical behaviour. The primary objectives of the present work were to investigate the formation of microstructure in artificially cemented material with Portland cement, find the relationships between cementitious bonding and clay mineralogy, and create constitutive frameworks for predicting the mechanical behaviour of cement-treated clays. Qualitative and quantitative microstructural characterisation of reconstituted and cemented material has been performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The results confirmed the transformation of the void microstructure from a bimodal, dispersed material into a unimodal, flocculated material due to artificial cementation. The addition of cement was found to reduce the amount of macro-pores within the cemented material, resulting in a significant reduction in hydraulic conductivity. A further parametric study was conducted on data obtained in the laboratory by the author combined with those found in the literature, to investigate the effect of clay mineralogy on artificial cementation. The results indicated the major influence of the activity of the clay, along with the cement and water content, on the results of the cement treatment. The observed variations in the mechanical behaviour with respect to mineralogy and the important effect of curing time have been explained in terms of the pozzolanic reactions, and the limitations of applying Abrams’ law to cement-admixed clays are discussed. In addition, an experimental study has been conducted to investigate the yielding and stress-strain behaviour of artificially cemented Ottawa clay and to compare it with the behaviour of the same soil in its naturally structured state. The results indicate that although the natural clay exhibits a meta-stable structure, resulting in an abrupt post-yield loss of strength, the artificially cemented material undergoes a more gradual breakage of the cementitious bonds. This allows for the use of the critical state concept, along with a pseudo-normal compression line, to develop a constitutive model for the artificially cemented material.

Abstract The subject of the thesis was to analyze by an engineering approach the global CO₂ balance and CO₂ utilisation. The aim was to apply methods and knowledge used in engineering sciences to describe the global CO₂ balance and the role of CO₂ in anthropogenic utilisation applications. Moreover barriers restricting commercialisation of new applications are discussed. These subjects were studied by literature reviews and calculations based on thermodynamics models. Engineering methods have shown to be applicable to describe the global balance of CO₂ and to define by a numerical way the Earth’s system carrying capacity. Direct and indirect actions, which mitigate the overload situation, were derived from the results. To screen out the attractive CO₂ properties in utilisation applications a mapping analysis was carried out. Properties, which enhance mass and heat transfer, are one of the most meaningful characteristics from the chemical engineering point of view. Attractive properties are often achieved at the supercritical state. Engineering thermodynamic methods were used in fluid phase determination of the case studies. Even simple methods are sufficient to advice experimental research work. The thermodynamic knowledge is the basement in creation of industrial scale chemical processes. If detailed information on system properties is needed, a model development due to the special requirements of high pressure systems and CO₂ features is required. This knowledge covers property information from all the components involved in chemical reactions. In addition to engineering knowledge successful technology transfer requires positive social structure as well. Finally, if the humankind is willing to mimic Nature and use light of the Sun as an energy source in engineering systems, development of thermodynamic methods is required also in this area. Especially the work terms, originally defined in classical mechanical thermodynamics and afterwards formulised also in other parts of the engineering fields, play a key role. If this development work is successful, we may see the shift from thermodynamics approach to ‘photodynamics’. Mitigation of global warming is a problem, which needs several kinds of activities. As a result of this study, there are listed a few engineering actions, which have a possibility to contribute to the work towards the carbon neutral society.

▼ The number of students that apply for studies at South African universities has increased dramatically over the past years, but the resources of the universities have stayed the same. It is therefore imperative that academic performance can be predicted on a short- and long-term basis. The Developing Expertise model might be able to predict academic performance on a short- and long-term basis. This study focussed primarily on academic performance on short-term basis by focussing on three of the model’s elements. The three elements that were investigated were: metacognition, intrinsic motivation and critical thinking. One of the contributions of this study is the refinement of some of the elements of the expertise model. The study helped to determine the validity of the instrument in a South African context. The measurement instrument can also be used as a selection meganism on short-term basis. In order to measure each of the elements of the expertise model, a measuring tool consisting of five questionnaires was compiled. A convenience sample of first year psychology students provided 326 students for the study. A second sample, compiled from the original sample, consisting of 209 first year students was used for the multiple regression analyses. These students are registered for psychology for the first time in 2005. The students were placed in three groups according to the student’s means of registering for the CBT centre. The first group was those students who completed the instrument on computers. The second group consisted of those students who completed a paper and pencil version of the measurement. The third group consisted of the Mamelodi students. These students completed a paper and pencil version of the measurement and brought it back a week later. The statistical analysis included factor analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Based on the literature research and the results of the statistical analysis, the expertise model was expanded to include metamemory as the functional unit for metacognition. Motivation can be divided in three subcomponents, namely: self-efficacy, intrinsic value and test anxiety. The motivational component, knowledge of cognition and external control can be used as predictors of academic performance on a short-term basis. The findings of this study can only be used as a selection meganism of academic performance on a short-term basis and therefore the results must be used with caution. ▼ The number of students that apply for studies at South African universities has increased dramatically over the past years, but the resources of the universities have stayed the same. It is therefore imperative that academic performance can be predicted on a short- and long-term basis. The Developing Expertise model might be able to predict academic performance on a short- and long-term basis. This study focussed primarily on academic performance on short-term basis by focussing on three of the model’s elements. The three elements that were investigated were: metacognition, intrinsic motivation and critical thinking. One of the contributions of this study is the refinement of some of the elements of the expertise model. The study helped to determine the validity of the instrument in a South African context. The measurement instrument can also be used as a selection meganism on short-term basis. In order to measure each of the elements of the expertise model, a measuring tool consisting of five questionnaires was compiled. A convenience sample of first year psychology students provided 326 students for the study. A second sample, compiled from the original sample, consisting of 209 first year students was used for the multiple regression analyses. These students are registered for psychology for the first time in 2005. The students were placed in three groups according to the student’s means of registering for the CBT centre. The first group was those students who completed the instrument on computers. The second group consisted of those students who completed a paper and pencil version of the measurement. The third group consisted of the Mamelodi students. These students completed a paper and pencil version of the measurement and brought it back a week later. The statistical analysis included factor analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Based on the literature research and the results of the statistical analysis, the expertise model was expanded to include metamemory as the functional unit for metacognition. Motivation can be divided in three subcomponents, namely: self-efficacy, intrinsic value and test anxiety. The motivational component, knowledge of cognition and external control can be used as predictors of academic performance on a short-term basis. The findings of this study can only be used as a selection meganism of academic performance on a short-term basis and therefore the results must be used with caution. Nous avons développé une méthode de contributions de groupes permettant d'estimer, en fonction de la température, le coefficient d'interaction binaire (kij) de l'équation d'état de Peng Robinson. Notre approche rend cette équation d'état prédictive. Douze groupes sont définis et il est possible d'estimer les kij pour n'importe quel mélange renfermant des alcanes, des aromatiques, des naphtènes et du CO2. Les diagrammes de phase et lieux des points critiques des systèmes binaires sont bien prédits par le modèle baptisé PPR78 (Predictive 1978, Peng Robinson equation of state). Ce modèle permet également de traiter efficacement les mélanges multiconstituants comme les pétroles bruts et les gaz naturels. A l'aide d'une cellule haute pression, des mesures d'équilibres liquide - vapeur ont été réalisées pour la première fois sur deux systèmes binaires : CO2 méthylcyclopentane et CO2 isopropylcyclohexane. Des mesures ont également été faites sur un mélange renfermant du CO2 et cinq hydrocarbures

A group contribution method allowing the estimation of the temperature dependent binary interaction parameter (kij) for the Peng Robinson equation of state is proposed. Doing so, a new predictive thermodynamic model is born. Twelve groups are defined and it is now possible to estimate the kij for any mixture containing alkanes, aromatics, naphthenes and CO2, whatever the temperature. The model, called PPR78 (Predictive 1978, Peng Robinson equation of state), gives a good description of the phase diagrams and critical locus of binary systems. This predictive model can be successfully employed for the simulation of many mixtures such as natural gases and petroleum fluids. Using a high pressure visual cell, vapor liquid equilibria measurements were made for two binary systems: CO2 methylcyclopentane and CO2 isopropylcyclohexane. For these two systems, no literature data were available. Finally, we measured bubble and dew points on a five component hydrocarbon mixture in the presence of CO2

The purpose of the dissertation is the study of the ‘locus of control of the environmental behavior’ that is considered to be one of the main factors of the environmental behavior and its possible relations to some characteristics of the non – typical operation of school, the so called hidden curriculum. The inquiry, the description and the better understanding of these relationships is the main purpose of the research. The basic strategy of the research is the one of the critical ethnography, while its approach is the hermeneutics. The research was conducted in the 1st Lyceum of Agios Dimitrios, Athens with the participation of all the school students. In the first phase of the research a certain number of interviews with students were conducted, which intended to the determination of a theoretical context as a basis for the next phase. In the second phase questionnaires were completed that included both intensity questions about environmental locus of control and free – response questions about the hidden curriculum issues. The analysis’ methods were content analysis, statistical analysis and case study. The most important results of the results of are: Five factors of environmental locus of control were extracted. Internal control concerning individual, political and legal action and external control concerning the ‘powerful others’ and the fate. A first important conclusion is the detection of the ‘environmental attitudes – environmental locus of control’ antithesis, which brings out the importance of the environmental locus of control towards the environmental behavior. Regarding the relationships between environmental locus of control and the school hidden curriculum, the relation between ‘collectivism’ and environmental locus of control is interesting. At the same time the verification that collectivism and individualism are different components of the individual’s perceptions concerning his priorities and his relations to others is also present, at least when they are examined in relation to environmental locus of control. This way the importance of the non – typical school operation for the enhancement of the environmental locus of control is evident. This can happen through the students’ empowerment and their engagement in collective choices for the society, not necessary by reducing their individualism but by increasing their collectivism. The need for the environmental locus of control to be an explicit goal of the Environmental Education becomes evident. This can happen when Environmental Education promotes not only personal identities of mediation and responsibility but the necessary characteristics of collectivism through the revealing of the individual’s relationships with the others. The present research is a paradigm of a synthesis of various scientific fields that are included in the field of Environmental Education. Finally, the results show the importance that the connection of Environmental Education to other types of education as Civil Education could have.
