▼ Advances in fabrication technologies for semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) have resulted in sub-100 nm feature sizes. Along with this desired reduction in dimension has come an undesired increase in vulnerability of flip-flops to soft errors, which are caused by energetic particles that either directly or indirectly deposit energy, and create electron-hole pairs in the semiconductor material. These charges, when collected at a circuit node, perturb the associated node voltage, creating a transient pulse, which may alter the data stored in the flip-flop, causing a single- event upset (SEU). Decreasing technology feature size has resulted in higher packing densities, as a result of which, single-event related
charge might be collected at multiple nodes in a circuit. Circuit-level simulations predict increased vulnerability of flip-flop designs and increased occurrence of single-event upsets in advanced technologies due to multi-node
charge collection from single-ion strikes. This trend is examined by simulating 3D models of the flip-flops in a terrestrial neutron environment using Monte-Carlo Radiative Energy Deposition (MRED) simulations for
charge deposition in several technology generations.

▼ For an atom there exists a
critical
nuclear
charge Z c that is just sufficient to bind the nucleus and
its electrons into a stable configuration. A study of the
critical
charge for two-electron atoms is presented with the purpose of
improving accuracy for Z c . To this end, high precision techniques
involving the variational method with multiple basis sets in
Hylleraas coordinates are employed. The method is particularly well
adapted to the case where one electron is strongly bound and the
other is at the limit of becoming unbound. The results are analysed
in terms of fractional powers of ( Z - Z c ) related to the
analytic structure of the energy E ( Z ) and a 1/ Z expansion for
the energy. This results in a Z c of 0.91102808(5). Future work
prompted by this study includes development of direct techniques to
determine Z c utilizing the low-Z stability of the method;
developing the framework and mathematical justification for a novel
bootstrap analysis method used in curve-fitting; and investigating
the inclusion of finite nuclear mass, relativistic effects, and
other higher order corrections in the determination of Z c
.

▼ Power consumption has become a major concern of integrated circuit (IC) design. Reducing the supply voltage to the near-threshold region is one method to reduce the power consumption. However, operating in this region makes the circuit more sensitive to process variations. In the thesis, the impact of process variations on a 32-nm 6T SRAM cell and two kinds of flip-flops (transmission gate flip-flop and clocked CMOS flip-flop) under near-threshold voltage is studied. Monte Carlo method is used to evaluate the potential of the circuits for soft errors. The double exponential current source is used to simulate the strike of an ionizing particle. For the SRAM cell, the results show that threshold voltage variability is a more significant parameter affecting the
critical charge distribution of the circuit under both the near-threshold voltage and the nominal supply voltage. For the flip-flops, the reduced supply voltage has little impact on the
critical charge variation induced by process variations. Moreover, the near-threshold operation has much smaller leakage power than the nominal supply voltage. However, the delay time of the circuits is also greatly increased in near-threshold region.

We study some important problems related to the transport properties of many body systems. It is divided in three parts, each one focusing in a specific topic. We obtain relevant results that improve our understanding of these systems. We investigate the effect of dissipation and time-dependent external sources, in the phase diagram of a many body system at zero and finite temperature. In the presence of time-dependent perturbations, dissipation is essential for the system to attain a steady, time independent state. In order to treat this time dependent problem, we use a Keldysh approach within an adiabatic approximation that allows us to study the phase diagram of this system as a function of the parameters of the system and temperature. We also discuss the nature of the quantum phase transitions of the system. Next, we study an important concept in the physics of metallic multi-band systems, that of…

This subject becomes topical following a rapid evolution of design procedures for slender structures used widely in the temporary installations. Only through the last twenty years that these structures are prefabricated of multidirectional frames (steel or aluminium tubular sections). These structures are lightweight and their stability lies only in the internal stiffness at rows of posts and horizontally by the planking as well as the links with the building. This work concerns the study of instabilities (buckling - lateral torsional buckling) taking into account different types of imperfections. New buckling curves and the associated imperfection factors are proposed in this thesis. These curves are obtained by imposing an initial deformed representing the geometrical and mechanical defects (residual stress). The experimental results were confronted with theoretical predictions of Eurocode 3 which show that the values of the imperfections in the literature are extremely exaggerated. The values advocated in this work could be of interest for a possible adjustment of the European buckling curves for this type of structure. Regarding the lateral instability, an original methodology in real scale tests of trusses consist of tubular elements was also developed. The developed loading system of "free wheels" allows releasing the point of application of the force from the beginning of…

▼ Large-scale adoption of electric vehicles requires batteries with higher energy density, lower cost, and improved safety compared to state-of-the-art (SOA) Li-ion batteries. This dissertation addresses the great-unmet need to develop beyond Li-ion batteries to facilitate the transition to electric power trains. The successful integration of metallic Li anodes into rechargeable batteries will enable a step increase in energy density compared to SOA Li-ion technology. However, the unstable nature of the electrode-electrolyte interface has limited the use of metallic Li anodes when paired with conventional organic solvent-based electrolytes. One approach to stabilize the metallic Li anode interface involves the integration of a solid-state electrolyte (SSE). Theoretical predictions suggest that Li dendrites will not form if a SSE exhibits a shear modulus that is approximately twice the shear modulus of metallic Li (GLi= 4.2 GPa) or higher. This criterion indicates that ceramic Li-ion conducting solid-state electrolytes (SSE) can prevent dendrites. Thus, the development of solid-state batteries using SSE has been overlooked as a potential means to stabilize the metallic Li anode during cycling.
The garnet-type Li-ion conductor, Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO), is an example of a SSE that exhibits the unique combination of high Li-ion conductivity (1 mS.cm-1 at 298 K) and stability against metallic Li. Additionally, LLZO has a shear modulus 14 times higher than metallic Li, thus should act as a physical barrier to prevent Li dendrite formation according to computational analysis. However, despite satisfying the shear modulus criterion, Li metal propagation has been observed in polycrystalline LLZO. This dissertation hypothesizes that atomistic and microstructural defects such as porosity, grain boundaries, interfaces, and surface impurities govern the stability of the Li-LLZO interface. The effect of each defect was isolated through ceramic processing and analyzed using a suite of characterization tools such as X-ray diffraction, electron backscatter, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss, acoustic, and Raman spectroscopy, direct current cycling and complex impedance, Vickers indentation, and fracture toughness measurements. The overarching goal of this dissertation was to better understand the phenomena that control the stability of the Li-LLZO interface, quantify the contributions of each defect, and develop engineering approaches to tailor the LLZO microstructure and interface for maximum resistance to Li metal propagation during cycling. The implications of this dissertation could accelerate the development of high energy density solid-state batteries.

▼ Radiation-induced single-event upsets (SEUs) pose a serious threat to the reliability of registers. The existing SEU analyses for static CMOS registers focus on the circuit-level impact and may underestimate the pertinent SEU information provided through node analysis. This thesis proposes SEU node analysis to evaluate the sensitivity of static registers and apply the obtained node information to improve the robustness of the register through selective node hardening (SNH) technique. Unlike previous hardening techniques such as the Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) and the Dual Interlocked Cell (DICE) latch, the SNH method does not introduce larger area overhead. Moreover, this thesis also explores the impact of SEUs in dynamic flip-flops, which are appealing for the design of high-performance microprocessors. Previous work either uses the approaches for static flip-flops to evaluate SEU effects in dynamic flip-flops or overlook the SEU injected during the precharge phase. In this thesis, possible SEU sensitive nodes in dynamic flip-flops are re-examined and their window of vulnerability (WOV) is extended. Simulation results for SEU analysis in non-hardened dynamic flip-flops reveal that the last 55.3 % of the precharge time and a 100% evaluation time are affected by SEUs.

▼ Aggressive technology scaling in semiconductor devices
has resulted in stability reduction for classic SRAM designs. This
is especially problematic for large integrated circuits. The
stability of SRAM cells can be affected by noise during a read
operation and radiation during the standby mode. In this work, an
approach to address the gradual stability reduction in SRAM designs
is presented. An SRAM design trade-offs approach is presented which
improves the characteristics of SRAM by modulating the transistor
sizing ratio, β. This method was tested on various SRAM designs in
32 nm technology. SRAM designs were optimized for various
constraints in power consumption, performance, radiation tolerance
and data stability. Different design trends produced by the
extensive approach analysis is discussed in this
thesis.

The main goals of this thesis are to modeling and to perform the buckling study of inflatable beams made from homogeneous orthotropic woven fabric (HOWF) composite. Three main scenarios were investigated in this thesis. The first is the experimental studies which were performed on HOWF inflatable beam in various inflation pressures for characterizing the orthotropic mechanical properties and buckling behaviors of the beam. In the second scenario, an analytical approach was considered to study the buckling and the behavior of an inflatable orthotropic beam. A 3D inflatable orthotropic beam model based on the Timoshenko's kinematics was briefly introduced: the nonlinearities (finite rotation, follower forces) were included in this model. The results were compared with theoretical results available in the literature. To check the limit of validity of the results, the wrinkling load was also presented in every case. The last scenario is devoted to the linear eigen and non-linear buckling analysis of inflatable beam made of HOWF. The finite element (FE) model established here involves a three-noded Timoshenko beam element with C0-type continuity for the transverse displacement and quadratic shape functions for the bending rotation and the axial displacement. In the linear buckling analysis, a mesh convergence test on the beam critical load was carried out…

▼ For an atom there exists a
critical nuclear
charge Z c that is just sufficient to bind the nucleus and its electrons into a stable configuration. A study of the
critical charge for two-electron atoms is presented with the purpose of improving accuracy for Z c . To this end, high precision techniques involving the variational method with multiple basis sets in Hylleraas coordinates are employed. The method is particularly well adapted to the case where one electron is strongly bound and the other is at the limit of becoming unbound. The results are analysed in terms of fractional powers of ( Z - Z c ) related to the analytic structure of the energy E ( Z ) and a 1/ Z expansion for the energy. This results in a Z c of 0.91102808(5). Future work prompted by this study includes development of direct techniques to determine Z c utilizing the low-Z stability of the method; developing the framework and mathematical justification for a novel bootstrap analysis method used in curve-fitting; and investigating the inclusion of finite nuclear mass, relativistic effects, and other higher order corrections in the determination of Z c .

▼ The research is motivated by the need to address two major challenges in wind power integration: how to mitigate wind power fluctuation and how to ensure stability of the farm and host grid. It is envisaged that wind farm power output fluctuation can be reduced by using a specific type of buffer, such as an energy storage system (ESS), to absorb its negative impact. The proposed solution, therefore, employs ESS to solve the problems. The key research findings include a new technique for calculating the desired power output profile, an ESS
charge-discharge scheme, a novel direct-calculation (optimization-based) method for determining ESS optimal rating, and an ESS operation scheme for improving wind farm transient stability. Analysis with 14 wind farms and a compressed-air energy storage system (CAES) shows that the
charge-discharge scheme and the desired output calculation technique are appropriate for ESS operation. The optimal ESSs for the 14 wind farms perform four or less switching operations daily (73.2%-85.5% of the 365 days) while regulating the farms output variation. On average, the ESSs carry out 2.5 to 3.1 switching operations per day. By using the direct-calculation method, an optimal ESS rating can be found for any wind farm with a high degree of accuracy. The method has a considerable advantage over traditional differential-based methods because it does not require knowledge of the analytical form of the objective function. For ESSs optimal rating, the improvement in wind energy integration is between 1.7% and 8%. In addition, a net increase in grid steady-state voltage stability of 8.3%-18.3% is achieved by 13 of the 14 evaluated ESSs. For improving wind farm transient stability, the proposed ESS operation scheme is effective. It exploits the use of a synchronous-machine-based ESS as a synchronous condenser to dynamically supply a wind farm with reactive power during faults. Analysis with an ESS and a 60-MW wind farm consisting of stall-regulated wind turbines shows that the ESS increases the farm
critical clearing time (CCT) by 1 cycle for worst-case bolted three-phase-to-ground faults. For bolted single-phase-to-ground faults, the CCT is improved by 23.1%-52.2%.
