▼ Today, professional philosophy is dominated by the assumption that literary language is either merely ornamental or that it even detracts from the purposes of philosophical discourse. Ancient philosophers, however, did not share this assumption. Thinkers like Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, and Plato all recognized that their manner of expression contributes to the philosophical purposes of a text in a way that does not merely confirm or illustrate what is said. This is why Plato couches his account of linguistic correctness (his only sustained treatment of linguistic meaning) in a thoroughly poetic dialogue—the Cratylus. Many scholars have recognized Plato’s debt to the literary tradition by trying to identify the provenance of his literary practices (such as etymologizing) in the Cratylus. And on the other hand, many have developed sophisticated interpretations of the dialogue’s arguments. However, no research adequately represents the expressly philosophical contribution made by Plato’s appropriation of the literary tradition in the Cratylus. My dissertation engages Plato’s appropriation of the literary tradition by looking at both his adoption of literary concepts and his enactment of literary practice. It does so with a focus on two philosophical questions that are fundamental to the Cratylus and yet have been neglected in the scholarship: (1) what exactly does Plato mean by “correctness,” and (2) why does he have Socrates demonstrate this correctness by etymologizing? The first chapter tackles the first of these questions by replacing the nearly universal understanding of “correctness,” as a correspondence between the semantic content of a name with a true description of the name’s referent, with an understanding based on the concept’s provenance in the literary tradition, a broader appropriateness of language to what is spoken about that I call “resonance.” Each subsequent chapter address a key instance where the standard understanding of correctness (and of etymology’s role in exhibiting correctness) is inadequate—and where an understanding of correctness as resonance makes more sense. The second chapter demonstrates that Cratylus makes positive philosophical contributions to an understanding of correctness as resonance through his own stylized use of language. Therein, I argue that Plato uses Cratylus’ style to express the idea that language’s correctness increases as it is made increasingly conspicuous in its insufficiency, thus precluding closure or reification of what is what is spoken about. The third chapter demonstrates that a crucial argument early in the dialogue is analogical in the strongest sense—that a correct understanding of the argument requires an understanding of the correctness (as resonance) of the argument’s analogues. Like Chapter 2, this demonstrates how language can be made meaningful, paradoxically, through a sort of destructive manipulation. ▼ Almost all high performance computing applications are written in MPI, which will continue to be the case for at least the next several years. Given the huge and growing importance of MPI, and the size and sophistication of MPI codes, scalable and incisive MPI debugging tools are essential. Existing MPI debugging tools have, despite their strengths, many glaring de ficiencies, especially when it comes to debugging under the presence of nondeterminism related bugs, which are bugs that do not always show up during testing. These bugs usually become manifest when the systems are ported to di fferent platforms for production runs. This dissertation focuses on the problem of developing scalable dynamic verifi cation tools for MPI programs that can provide a coverage guarantee over the space of MPI nondeterminism. That is, the tools should be able to detect diff erent outcomes of nondeterministic events in an MPI program and enforce all those di fferent outcomes through repeated executions of the program with the same test harness. We propose to achieve the coverage guarantee by introducing efficient distributed causality tracking protocols that are based on the matches-before order. The matches-before order is introduced to address the shortcomings of the Lamport happens-before order [40], which is not sufficient to capture causality for MPI program executions due to the complexity of the MPI semantics. The two protocols we propose are the Lazy Lamport Clocks Protocol (LLCP) and the Lazy Vector Clocks Protocol (LVCP). LLCP provides good scalability with a small possibility of missing potential outcomes of nondeterministic events while LVCP provides full coverage guarantee with a scalability tradeoff . In practice, we show through our experiments that LLCP provides the same coverage as LVCP. This thesis makes the following contributions: •The MPI matches-before order that captures the causality between MPI events in an MPI execution. • Two distributed causality tracking protocols for MPI programs that rely on the matches-before order. • A Distributed Analyzer for MPI programs (DAMPI), which implements the two aforementioned protocols to provide scalable and modular dynamic verifi cation for MPI programs. • Scalability enhancement through algorithmic improvements for ISP, a dynamic verifi er for MPI programs.

This thesis is impelled by the unsettling suspicion that academic feminism has adopted modes of theorising which undermine its political raison d’être. Specifically it argues that certain discursive conventions observed in popular attacks on feminism have, somewhat surprisingly, been imported unchanged into feminist theory. From the late 1980s, attempts were made to silence minority claims of discrimination and subordination via the discourse of ‘political correctness’. In particular, this discourse belittled such claims as the exaggerated and irrational expression of largely self-inflicted ‘victimhood’, an argument which depended for its force on denigrating the figure of the ‘victim’ as a morally, and not just practically, diminished status. I suggest that the same logic occurs in a more or less sublimated form in feminist theory – the self-identified victim is positioned as having crossed a threshold of reasonableness, the standard for which is set by non-victim others. With a few notable exceptions most feminist scholars have failed to address, let alone notice, this resonance. However, this thesis goes beyond documenting a surface correspondence between these two ostensibly incompatible discursive domains. Its significant claim is that a discursive strategy designed specifically to undermine the basis for feminist claims has become integral to the meaning-making practices of academic feminism. The issue is not simply one of a disturbing coincidence with a discourse from which feminist theory nevertheless remains largely autonomous. On the contrary, the claim here is that readers of feminist theory cannot make sense of certain modes of argument without reference to anti-feminist systems of meaning erected elsewhere. In that sense, the discourse of ‘political correctness’ has infected the very core of feminist theorising. An additional contribution of the thesis is that, in the process of establishing precisely how this discursive imbrication is accomplished, it utilises a theory of reading practice which is applicable to the study of discourse more broadly. This approach addresses questions about the mechanisms by which prominent discursive tropes come to act upon and be transmitted by otherwise disparate subjects, a point which has remained largely unresolved by discourse scholars. The argument is that the discourse of ‘political correctness’ facilitates the accurate recognition by readers of the denigrated ‘victim’ in feminist theory, normalising it and making it comprehensible in the absence of other explanation within the individual texts themselves. Successfully accomplishing these acts of recognition is furthermore a criterion of membership of the feminist discourse community, demonstrating competence at deploying its knowledge standards and a willingness to collude in the exclusions those standards entail. Der Diskurs über ‚Political Correctness‘ (PC) erlangte unter anderem durch den US-Wahlkampf von Donald Trump im Jahr 2016 auch im deutschsprachigen Raum erneute Aufmerksamkeit. In der öffentlichen Auseinandersetzung werden verschiedene Ziele und Aus-wirkungen einer PC diskutiert und konträre Sichtweisen ausgebildet. Diese Sichtweisen, Vorstellungen und Interpretationen sind wiederum bedeutend für den Diskurs und in welcher Form die Diskussionsinhalte umgesetzt und gesellschaftlich etabliert werden. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es demnach, zu ermitteln, welche Vorstellungen und Stimmungen zurzeit bezüglich PC vorherrschend sind, um ein differenziertes Verständnis über die öffentliche Meinung zu erlangen. Durch die Analyse freier Assoziationen zu einem bestimmten Reizwort (Kern-Peripherie-Analyse) können Vorstellungen, Bilder und Interpretationssysteme als sogenannte ‚soziale Repräsentationen‘ erfasst werden. Durch einen Mixed-Method-Ansatz wurden die sozialen Repräsentationen von PC in einer Gesamtstichprobe sowie in verschiedenen Stichprobencharakteristika (Bildung, Alter, Wohnortgröße und Parteipräferenz) und nach Meritokratie-Typen qualitativ erhoben. Die Stimmung bezüglich der sozialen Repräsentationen wurde quantitativ durch Valenzen und daraus abgeleiteten Polaritäts- und Neutralitätsindizes ermittelt. Die Meritokratie-Typen wurden anhand einer Clusteranalyse identifiziert und unter-schieden sich in ihren Ausprägungen hinsichtlich der Vorstellung, dass allein Leistung für sozialen Aufstieg und Erfolg ausschlaggebend sei. Die Kern-Peripherie-Analyse zeigte die Assoziationskategorien ‚Offenheit/Toleranz‘, ‚Gerechtigkeit‘, ‚politisch korrekte Ausdrucksweise‘ und ‚Rassismus‘ in der Gesamtstichprobe (n = 162) als stabile und bedeutungsgebende Aspekte von PC. Weitere Assoziationen, die Emotionen sowie Befürwortung und Ablehnung ausdrücken, zeigten sich peripher. Die sozialen Repräsentationen unterschieden sich je nach Meritokratie-Typ und ebenso hinsichtlich der Stichprobencharakteristika und es kann von keinem einheitlichen Verständnis von PC ausgegangen werden. Bezüglich der Valenzen zeigt sich eine differenzierte Bewertung, da die angegebenen Assoziationen positiv, negativ und auch neutral beurteilt wurden. Die Gruppe, in der ausschließlich positive bzw. ausschließlich negative Assoziationen anführt wurden, war vergleichsweise klein.

The discourse on 'Political Correctness' (PC) gained renewed attention in the German-speaking world, partly as a result of Donald Trump's US election campaign in 2016. ▼ This thesis is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the FASTAR group of the Department of Computer Science, University of Pretoria, South Africa. I present a number of algorithms for constructing minimal acyclic deterministic finite automata (MADFAs), most of which I originally derived/designed or co-discovered. Being acyclic, such automata represent finite languages and have proven useful in applications such as spellchecking, virus-searching and text indexing. In many of those applications, the automata grow to billions of states, making them difficult to store without using various compression techniques — the most important of which is minimization. Results from the late 1950’s show that minimization yields a unique automaton (for a given language), and later results show that minimization of acyclic automata is possible in time linear in the number of states. These two results make for a rich area of algorithmics research; automata and algorithmics research are relatively old fields of computing science and the discovery/invention of new algorithms in the field is an exciting result. I present both incremental and nonincremental algorithms. With nonincremental techniques, the unminimized acyclic deterministic finite automaton (ADFA) is first constructed and then minimized. As mentioned above, the unminimized ADFA can be very large indeed — often even too large to fit within the virtual memory space of the computer. As a result, incremental techniques for minimization (i.e. the ADFA is minimized during its construction) become interesting. Incremental algorithms frequently have some overhead: if the unminimized ADFA fits easily within physical memory, it may still be faster to use nonincremental techniques. The presentation used in this thesis has a few unusual characteristics: Few other presentations follow a correctness-by-construction style for presenting and deriving algorithms. The presentations given here include correctness arguments or sketches thereof. The presentation is taxonomic — emphasizing the similarities and differences between the algorithms at a fundamental level. While it is possible to present these algorithms in a formal-language-theoretic setting, this thesis remains somewhat closer to the actual implementation issues. In several chapters, new algorithms and interesting new variants of existing algorithms are presented. It gives new presentations of many existing algorithms — all in a common format with common examples. There are extensive links to the existing literature. Saobraćajno inženjerstvo - Vazduhoplovna prevozna sredstva / Transportation engineering - Aircraft

Predmet istraživanja doktorske disertacije jeste izbor modela neperfektnog održavanja koji je moguće primeniti na održavanje flote vazduhoplova u okviru trenutne organizacije održavanja a na osnovu parametara koji se prate u toku eksploatacije. Pregled ponuđenih modela održavanja i klasifikacija prema politikama održavanja poslužio je za izbor modela koji za ulazne parametre raspoloživosti uzima norme koje se prate pri održavanju flote vazduhoplova. Na osnovu predloženog logičkog dijagrama odlučivanja problem je rešen odabirom konkretnog modela neperfektnog održavanja. Primenom izabrane metode neperfektnog održavanja na numeričkom modelu dobijene su vrednosti za intervale između preventivnih održavanja kao i maksimalni broj uzastopnih korektivnih popravki za svaki od podsistema. Primena preporučenih normi na numeričkom modelu dala je razliku u trenutnoj i ostvarenoj raspoloživosti za svaki od podsistema. Razvijen je simulacioni model procesa eksploatacije flote aviona G-4 za karakterističan zadatak u školskoj nameni. Postavka rasporeda entiteta i logika rada simulacije u najvećoj mogućoj meri slede zadatu organizaciju izvršenja zadataka i održavanja flote vazduhoplova. Scenariji u simulaciji eksploatacije flote vazduhoplova formirani su oko primenjenog koncepta održavanja. Referentni scenario predstavlja aktuelni koncept održavanja prema dostignutim resursima. Eksperimentalni scenario predstavlja upotrebu koncepta baziranog na primeni izabrane metode neperfektnog održavanja. Varijacijom normi održavanja u aktuelnom konceptu registrovane su promene statističkih pokazatelja Dostignute raspoloživosti i Dnevne ispravnosti. Koncept neperfektnog održavanja u eksperimentalnom scenariju uz ograničenja broja uzastopnih popravki potvrdio je razlike u promeni vrednosti statističkih parametara u odnosu na referentni scenario.

▼ Geographic routing is a scalable any-to-any routing algorithm in which node state scales as the number of neighbors. It uses greedy routing when possible, and uses face routing to recover when greedy progress reaches a local minimum node that has no neighbor closer to the destination. Face routing is guaranteed to work correctly only on planar graphs that have no cross-link.; All currently proposed techniques for face routing and for constructing planar graphs (planarization) have relied on common underlying assumptions: circular radio range and precise localization. However, our experimental evaluations demonstrate that these assumptions are violated by real radios and that these violations can result in persistent routing failures. Motivated by this, we have investigated how well geographic face routing works under general conditions such as irregular radio range and imprecise location information.; In this thesis, we have extensively examined the correctness of geographic routing algorithms in real wireless graphs. Our initial research identified and classified failures in planarization and face routing. To x these failures, we have proposed the Cross-Link Detection Protocol (CLDP) and enhanced face routing algorithms. CLDP is the distributed planarization technique that enables provably correct geographic face routing on arbitrary connectivity graphs.; Next, we have examined the performance of geographic routing algorithms in arbitrary graphs. Existing algorithms have high message cost and high stretch. To improve performance, we have devised Lazy Cross-Link Removal (LCR) and Intelligent Face Routing (IFR): LCR correctly and reactively planarizes graphs with extremely low message cost; IFR is a new approach for face routing which exhibits the best average stretch performance among existing face routing families. ▼ Large data sets are often stored distributedly to increase the reliability of systems and the efficiency of query evaluation in them. While some query operators – like selections and projections – are intrinsically conform with parallel evaluation, others – like joins – demand specific distribution patterns. For relational databases, a common approach to evaluate queries in parallel relies on the use of rather simple distribution patterns for binary joins and the computation of the query result according to some query plan, operator by operator. Often, this requires the redistribution of large intermediate results (possibly larger than the input and/or output) and thus may lead to unnecessary long processing times. Thus, especially in the last decade, more elaborate distribution patterns that depend on the whole query have been studied and shown to allow more efficient query evaluation in several cases by reducing the amount of communication between servers. Ameloot et al. have described a setting where query evaluation is studied for a broad range of distribution patterns. Their work focuses on problems to decide whether a query can be evaluated correctly under a given distribution pattern. More particularly, they have considered two problems: "parallel correctness", where the pattern is specified explicitly, and "parallel-correctness transfer", where the pattern is known to be appropriate for another query. This thesis comprises the author's contributions to the complexity-theoretical investigation of these problems for conjunctive queries (and extensions thereof). These contributions complement the main characterisations and some additional complexity results by Ameloot et al. Furthermore, this thesis contains some new characterisations for "polarised" queries. Via the characterisations, parallel correctness and parallel-correctness transfer can be translated into questions on the co-occurrences of certain facts, induced by the query, on some server. Such questions and others can be modelled by "distribution dependencies", a variant of the well-known tuple- and equality-generating dependencies. Modelling via these constraints allows a more general description of distribution patterns in distributed relational data. The third contribution of this thesis is the study of the implication problem for distribution dependencies, providing lower and upper bounds for some fragments. ▼ A forecast for an event should be based on a probability distribution of the possible outcomes of the event. In assessing the forecast, the forecast is given a penalty according to the outcome that occurs. The penalty, or score, is determined by a scoring rule and proper scoring rules are preferred; under a proper scoring rule, there is no incentive for a forecaster to issue a forecast that differs from the forecast they believe is appropriate. For proper scoring rules, the accuracy of a forecaster is defined to be their expected score over all possible forecasts and outcomes. Other measures of forecaster performance can be obtained by expressing accuracy as a sum of several terms, a process known as decomposing the accuracy. Each term of a decomposition measures a quality of the issued forecasts; qualities considered important are those that represent features of the joint distribution of the forecasts and outcomes. In the main decomposition, which we call the URR decomposition, the terms are uncertainty, resolution and reliability. The form of the URR decomposition is known for scoring rules of discrete events and their precise-probabilistic forecasts, which are forecasts issued as precisely-known probability distributions. We extend this URR decomposition to events with outcomes in any space and forecasts that may be functions of a probability distribution. We also determine in general form a second decomposition of accuracy, the RDC decomposition, in which the terms refer to the qualities of refinement, discrimination and correctness of the forecasts; the RDC decomposition has previously only be calculated in the specific instance of a binary event under the Brier scoring rule (Brier, 1950). The URR and RDC decompositions must be modified if the issued forecasts or recorded outcomes are separated into groups or bins before being assessed, and we give these amended decompositions. In a different setting, the URR and RDC decompositions we derive can also be used to examine the properties of interval-probabilistic forecasts. Interval-probabilistic forecasts are specific to binary events and issue a range of probabilities that the event will occur. There is little previous work on interval-probabilistic forecasts and to apply the URR and RDC decompositions we first define and characterise proper scoring rules for interval-probabilistic forecasts, known as interval-proper scoring rules, before establishing the URR and RDC decompositions of a particular interval-proper scoring rule, the interval-Brier scoring rule.

Nauka o jeziku - Sociolingvistika / Language studies - Socioliguistics

Cilj ove doktorske disertacije jeste da ispita i utvrdi stavove novih generacija studenata sa dodiplomskog studija Engleskog jezika i književnosti u univerzitetskim gradovima na području Bosne i Hercegovine prema upotrebi jezičnih izraza koji pripadaju veoma delikatnoj jezičnoj pojavi - tabuu. Tabu izrazi proizilaze iz socijalnih i kulturoloških stega identifikujući ponašanje koje je, kao takvo, presedan nepoštivanja, neuljudnosti, loših manira i čak bestidnosti i bezobrazluka. U okviru tabu izraza posebna se pažnja posvećuje psovci koja je rijetko bila predmet lingvističkog istraživanja, jer se s matrala apsolutno nevažnom i štaviše degradirajućom. U medijima su ovakvi izrazi prolazili kroz iscrpne procese cenzurisanja, ili, pak, bili u potpunosti zabranjivani. Čak su i eminentni lingvisti prošloga stoljeća razvijali jezične teorije isključujući psovanje, premda su bili svjesni da ono itekako postoji i da je, šta više, vrlo zastupljeno, naročito u neformalnim svakodnevnim razgovorima. Itekako je osjetna njihova marginalizovanost u naučnoistraživačkim lingvističkim radovima, a donekle i izopćenost iz javne komunikacije, čemu svjedoče i sva dosadašnja ispitivanja i analize. Zbog te činjenice ova doktorska disertacija će sveobuhvatno, iscrpno i cjelovito istražiti i analizirati stavove novih generacija studenata prema upotrebi tabu izraza sa engleskog i boš njačkog / hrvatskog / srpskog govornog područja, nastojeći pokazati stvarnu upotrebu tabu izraza u svakodnevnom govoru i to na oba jezika koje studenti svakodnevno koriste. Ovaj rad će pokušati ukloniti sve tabue sa jedne legitimne teme koju lingvisti nikako ne bi trebali ignorirati i odbacivati. Promotrit će se i stavovi prema cenzuri tabu izraza, kao i eventualno pomijeranje granica tolerancije koje postoji prema tabu izrazima. Također će se ispitati i stavovi pr ema posljedici upotrebe tabu izraza i eventualnom uticaju na promjenu jezika, te ocijeniti takvi uticaji na jezik i jezično ponašanje ispitanika, polazeći sa osnovnih stajališta sociolingvistike , pragmatike i odgovarajućih sociolingvističkih parametara.
