▼ A preliminary review of the literature on coping revealed a gap in the existing knowledge of coping, particularly in the context of an economic downturn. Coping is a process that unfolds in the context of a situation (Lazarus&Folkman, 1984). Somerfield and McCrae (2000:624) appeal to researchers to focus on coping responses to specific situations within a specific context instead of general coping strategies, in this case, coping strategies for leaders during an economic downturn. A grounded theory methodology within a constructivist-interpretive paradigm was employed in this study. The population consisted of individual South African mining leaders employed by three mines. For the purposes of the study, ‘mining leaders’ were defined as members of a mine or mining group’s South African executive committee. Sampling took place on an institutional (mine) level, as well as on an individual (mining leader) level, although the unit of analysis was individual leaders. Mines involved in beneficiating a variety of commodities were selected purposively. Individual leaders (executives) within each company were also selected purposively from the executive committees to form the sample of individual sampling units. Data were obtained through intensive interviews with one pilot respondent and a further seven respondents. Data was analysed using grounded theory methodology, resulting in a conceptual framework of coping strategies for leaders during an economic downturn. The literature was then linked to the conceptual framework developed in this study, showing the relevance of the findings in relation to the existing body of knowledge in organisational behaviour and coping. The findings provided some understanding of how leaders cope during an economic downturn. In addition, this study managed to contribute methodologically to the field of coping research by demonstrating that alternative methodologies (in this case, grounded theory) using narrative approaches (interviews) can uncover ways of coping that are not included in traditional coping inventories. This methodology also allowed for a more in-depth understanding of the phenomenon being studied in the particular context of an economic downturn, in answer to Somerfield and McCrae’s (2000:624) appeal. Recommendations were made to assist leaders to cope better during an economic downturn in turbulent times. Opportunities for further research were also highlighted. ▼ The domestic violence against women, especially from male counterparts, has escalated in Namibia to the extent that women suffer physical violence and even murder. Thus, the Government of the Republic of Namibia established the Gender Based Violence Protection Unit (GBVPU) to provide services to domestic violence survivors, both men and women. This research investigated how both married and single-status female victims and survivors experienced and coped with physical violence by their male counterparts. The objectives of the study were: to investigate and analyse the nature of domestic violence experienced by female survivors; to establish the survival and coping strategies of women who have experienced domestic violence, and to establish women’s knowledge on how and why domestic violence occurs. It was found that pervasive cultures of male dominance and patriarchy were the structural cause of domestic violence, as the power vested in men by societal tradition influenced them to physically abuse their partners. Most African cultures prohibit women from ‘back-chatting’ men, which in many instances results in violence when they challenge male authority. It was reported that culture allowed men to view extra marital affairs as acceptable, leading to gender based violence (GBV) when women objected. Alcohol was reported as another core factor contributing to domestic violence against women, as men are likely to be more abusive when under the influence of alcohol as predicated in these findings. Archaic or harmful traditions should no longer be acceptable, and should be revised, since gender equality is a key element to development. It is, therefore, recommended that men be educated on how to give women equal partnership rights in relationships and family life, and opportunities to express themselves without violent reactions. Regarding alcohol as a contributing factor to domestic violence, it is recommended that the government amends the law in terms of the suspension sentence for the perpetrators to stop drinking alcohol for a period of time while under rehabilitation services.

▼ The purpose of the study was to examine kindergarten through fifth grade teachers’ responses regarding their work-related stressors, the type of manifestations of stress, both emotional and/or behavioral, they experienced due to work-related stress, and their identification of coping strategies used to reduce their work-related stress. The teachers who participated in the study were from identified school districts in northern Minnesota. The study participants completed a 21 question online survey based on the Teacher Stress Inventory developed by Dr. Michael J. Fimian in 1984 and through the researcher’s teaching experiences. The intent of the study was to assist classroom teachers and their administrators in acknowledging that work-related stress does exist and that there are strategies that could assist teachers with coping with work-related stressors. Study findings revealed kindergarten through fifth grade teachers in select northern Minnesota schools reported the most noticeable work-related stressors were described by the following statements: there is too much work to do; student behaviors negatively impact my ability to perform my job; there is little time to prepare for my lessons/responsibilities; and my personal priorities were being short-changed due to time demands at work. Those most noticeable work-related stressors represent emotional manifestations of stress. Physical manifestations of stress reported by the study participants included: feeling tired before arriving to work; physical exhaustion; and becoming fatigued over a short period of time. The coping strategies most used to cope with work-related stressors were identified by study participants as personal and family relationships, physical activity, and entertainment. The study results indicated that teachers should be made aware that they could benefit from implementing coping strategies to address work-related stress and that those strategies, such as mindfulness and healthy habits and relationships, provide ways to manage their stress. Furthermore, school districts leaders should be cognizant of the immense stress teachers experience and, as a result, invest in professional development opportunities, such as mindfulness-based programs, that can be customized to address this important issue. ▼ Background: Food insecurity has been described as an urgent and pervasive public health issue for Aboriginal people (First Nations [FN], Métis, and Inuit) in Canada. However, national health surveys have generally excluded a large portion of the Aboriginal population (FN living on-reserve and Inuit), resulting in limited data on food insecurity in these individuals and communities. In addition, scales for measuring food insecurity have not been validated in Canadian Aboriginal populations. Food security challenges faced by Aboriginal people living in remote communities are unique and few studies have examined the perceptions of and coping strategies for food insecurity in this population. Objectives: The overall objective of this research was to explore various aspects of food insecurity (prevalence, perceptions, and coping strategies) in the remote, on-reserve First Nations community of Fort Albany, Ontario. This thesis consisted of five studies conducted in Fort Albany. The objectives for Study I were to quantitatively measure the prevalence of food insecurity using the Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) and to use two qualitative interview questions to evaluate the relevance of the HFSSM. Study II used qualitative interview questions to examine the perceptions of and coping strategies for food insecurity. Studies III and IV investigated two programs in Fort Albany that had the potential to affect food security: the school snack program and a greenhouse project. Study III assessed the impact of the school snack program on student food intake. Study IV was a descriptive case study of the context and implementation of a community greenhouse project. Study V involved the development and formative evaluation of supplemental questions for the HFSSM intended to be relevant for measuring food security in First Nations households. Methods: One adult from each household in the community was invited to complete the 18-item HFSSM, demographic questions, and an interview with questions on the relevance of the HFSSM for First Nations food security and strategies used to cope with food insecurity. To evaluate the snack program, 24 hour diet recall data were collected using the Waterloo Web-based Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (WEB-Q) in November 2004 and December 2007 with grade six to 10 students attending Peetabeck Academy in Fort Albany. Food group consumption and nutrient intake of students participating in the school snack program were compared with students who chose not to participate. Five additional questions asked students about their participation, preferences, and impressions of the snack program. Data sources for the greenhouse project included semi-directed interviews with a purposive and snowball sample of community key informants, direct observations, written documentation, and photo-documentation. ▼ This ethnographic study of the strategies used by pupils in their adjustment to a new class after an individual move to a new school partway through a term considered 30 pupils aged 8-11 entering a Primary School run by the Service Children's Education Authority during the course of an academic year. Previous research suggests that whilst there may be little statistical effect on educational attainment of even frequent changes of school, there are pupils whose attainment seems adversely, and others beneficially, affected. Attempts to associate these pupils with such factors as age at or frequency of moves, socio-economic status or IQ levels have proved unsuccessful. This study utilises the notion of 'coping strategy' as put forward by Hargreaves (1978) and Pollard (1982) to investigate the hypothesis that it is the difference in the strategies that the pupils use that enables some to cope effectively and even benefit from changes of school whilst others appear to suffer. In order to consider the hypothesis this study puts forward an entirely new model of strategies and their use and significantly amends the Hargreaves/Pol lard model of the contexts of constraint. A process of 'progressive focus' is suggested whereby these contexts can be interrelated, individual actions in the classroom can be identified as strategies and linked to goals in progressively wider spheres, and the effect of ineffective strategies can be recognised. Using this model the study: * suggests that pupil adjustment is affected by both their strategies and their goals and provides a description of this process. * suggests that it is not possible to link a simple typification of strategies to any aspect of adjustment * describes the way in which the strategy use of transient pupils could enable them to make higher or lower attainments than their static peers * points to the prevalence of pupil goals in the societal sphere and puts forward a notion of 'radical coping' that explains teachers' serious concerns about the adjustment of some pupils. The basis of teacher interventions with their new pupils is considered and ways in which the model could be used by teachers and parents to assist new pupils in the process of adjustment are put forward. The model, although derived from the situation of new pupils, presents a way in which classroom interactions as a whole could be considered and therefore contributes to a wider understanding of pupil actions and teacher effectiveness.

SAMMANFATTNING Bakgrund På grund av prestationskrav kan elitidrottare utsätta sig för att träna trots hög smärtintensitet. Flertalet kvantitativa studier har undersökt vilka copingstrategier som används av idrottare med smärta. Däremot är elitidrottares egna upplevelser av smärta ännu ett outforskat område. Syfte Att undersöka en grupp elitidrottares upplevelser av smärta och deras strategier för att träna i närvaro av smärta. Metod Fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer med elitidrottare har utförts. Databearbetningen har skett med hjälp av kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultat Det framkom tio kategorier. Smärta beskrevs som uppmärksamhetskrävande och något som kunde ge negativa konsekvenser. Yttre faktorer såsom omgivningens utformning samt inre faktorer såsom förväntningar och fokus tycktes påverka smärtupplevelsen under träning. Hanteringen av smärta skedde genom sätt att tänka och agera, såsom positivt självprat och uppvärmning. Konklusion Smärta upplevdes som ett hinder som kunde påverkas av yttre och inre faktorer. Inom träning kunde smärta hanteras genom olika sätt att tänka och agera. Vidare forskning kan leda till klinisk nytta för fysioterapeuter i kontakt med elitidrottare.

ABSTRACT Background Because of demands of performance elite athletes can expose themselves to train regardless of pain intensity. Several quantitative studies have examined coping strategies used by athletes with pain. However, the elite athlete's own experiences of pain is still an unexplored area. Aim To investigate a group of elite athletes' experiences of pain and their strategies for training in the presence of pain. Methods Four semi-structured interviews with elite athletes have been conducted. Data processing has been done by using qualitative content analysis. Results Ten categories emerged. Pain was described as attention-consuming and something that could have negative consequences. External factors such as environment and internal factors such as expectations and focus seemed to affect the pain experience during training. The pain was managed through ways of thinking and acting, like positive self talk and warming up. Conclusion Pain was perceived as an obstacle that may be affected by factors in the environment and within themselves. Within training pain could be managed through different ways of thinking and acting. Further research can lead to clinical benefit for professionals in contact with elite athletes.

Antalet personer som får diagnosen epilepsi ökar för varje år. Med sjukdomen uppkommer problem som varje person ställs inför. För att vuxna personer med diagnosen epilepsi ska kunna hantera sina problem kan de ta hjälp av copingstrategier. Syftet med studien var att undersöka copingstrategier hos vuxna personer med diagnosen epilepsi. Studien genomfördes som en litteraturstudie där artikelsökning, granskning och urval genomfördes på ett strukturerat och systematiskt tillvägagångsätt. Resultatet grundades på åtta vetenskapliga artiklar. Efter analys av artiklarna framkom tre huvudkategorier: Inre copingstrategier, Yttre copingstrategier och Fördelning och användning av copingstrategier. Inre copingstrategier utmynnade i ytterligare två underkategorier: Kontroll över situationen och Kontroll över känslorna. Resultatet visar att de vanligaste copingstrategierna är anpassning, förnekelse och religion. Resultatet visar även på att liknande copingstrategier används i många olika länder och att skillnader går att finna kring olika användning av copingstrategier hos kvinnor respektive män. Ytterligare forskning kring copingstrategier behövs för att förståelsen kring olika copingstrategier i sin tur ska kunna utmynna i bättre omvårdnad för vuxna personer med diagnosen epilepsi. Detta genom att sjuksköterskan lättare ska kunna vägleda och förstå vuxna personer med diagnosen epilepsi.

The number of people who are diagnosed with epilepsy increases each year and what is more each person stricken by the disease also experiences different issues all related to the illness. To be able handle the problems generated from epilepsy they can use different coping strategies. The aim of this study was to examine coping strategies among adults diagnosed with epilepsy and it was made as a literary study where article search, examination and selection was done according to a structural and methodical approach. The result was based upon eight scholarly articles. After an analysis of the articles three main categories emerged: Internalized coping strategy, external coping strategy and allocation and use of coping strategies. Internalized coping strategy gave rise to two additional lower categories: situation-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. The result shows that the most common coping strategies are adaption, denial and religion. Furthermore it is also shown that similar strategies are used among many countries, whereas there is a difference between men and women. Additional research is needed within this field to increase the knowledge about coping strategies among people with epilepsy. The effect of this knowledge is that it will be easier for nurses to guide and understand people diagnosed with epilepsy.

▼ Housing has increasingly become a threatened product in many urban areas in highly populated regions. As a result, several urban dwellers live under housing conditions that affect an individual’s pride and experiences, causing distressing social, economic, spatial and, health implications. Particularly, the deficit in housing supply and the high prices of the available housing stock poses challenges to the residents of urban centers. This research therefore, sought to discover the challenges that the residents of Madina in the La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Area face when renting housing units for shelter. The study adopted multi-sampling technique (three-stages) and sampled 150 residents in Madina for the survey. In-depth interviews were conducted for 35 residents (15 residents who lived informal structures and 20 who lived ininformal structures in Madina). Findings from the research showed that residents preferred to access housing units themselves than the other means (through friends and family and rental agents). It was revealed that residents faced psychological (anxiety, fear of eviction and reduced mastery and privacy), economic (high rent charges, extortion from rental agents and high rent payment advance), social challenges (eviction, unreliable security and floods) as they rent. In addition, the field data showed the various coping strategies for dealing with the challenges.For economic challenges, residents took loans from friends and family, signed under Susu schemes, reduced expenditure among others. Reliance on God, alcoholism andloans were some of the coping strategies for psychological challenges. Residents used burglar proofs for security, raised frontage of doorsteps to prevent floodwater from getting into their rooms, among others, to cope with social challenges faced in renting. The research, therefore recommends that the government institutions responsible for enhancing supply of housing like Ministry of Water Resources, Work and Housing and financial institutions, for instance, Ghana Home Loans Ltd should make mortgage plans more flexible and tailored to suit all income earners. Again, housing policies and frameworks regarding urban housing should be well implemented by the various stakeholders. In addition, rental agents need to form associations or companies and be put under the ministry of local government where their operations can be supervised.

▼ This empirical study was conducted in the Kabbe Constituency of the Zambezi Region which is inundated by recurrent floods of varying magnitudes each year. The flood risk perceptions and coping strategies used by the indigenous residents have not been given much academic attention. Although the flood mitigation approaches applied in the Kabbe Constituency seemingly ameliorate the disastrous impacts, they have proved inadequate. This study used 150 unstructured interviews and field studies to ethnographically explore flood risk perceptions and coping strategies of the residents in the Kabbe Constituency. Desk-top research analysed to what extent the Namibian National Disaster Risk Management System had incorporated indigenous knowledge in disaster risk reduction policies in relation to the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015. The results of the empirical research revealed that 80% of the residents have advanced levels of flood risk perceptions and 83% showed high sense of belonging and attachment to the floodplain. Significantly, men and women weigh flood risks differently. Men weigh the risks according to the benefits they derive from the floods, while women weigh the risks according to effects on property, children and themselves. To cope with floods, the residents rely on indigenous flood knowledge passed on from previous experiences. During floods, division of labour occurs between men, women and children. Men are usually found on lower terraces fishing while women and children are usually on higher terraces. Residents practice seasonal migration to alternative homes located away from the floodplain when floods are above normal and maintain some resilience by living on fish and lily tubers as alternative foods. An assessment of the Namibian National Disaster Risk Management Policies revealed deficiencies, particularly favouring modern disaster risk reduction approaches over indigenous flood knowledge. In conclusion, the author refers to construction methods applied in the Asian Pacific Region, which could be modified in the Kabbe Constituency to allow people to live with floods. Further recommendations include the development of a policy framework to document and integrate indigenous flood knowledge in the Namibian National Disaster Risk Management Policies and programs.

▼ Corpse handlers in mortuaries are a distinct population, prone to the development of psychological challenges. Previous studies have linked their susceptibility to stressful work environments, characterized by recurrent confrontation with corpses. During the year 2016, 46 staff members at the state mortuary facility in Windhoek handled 4 347 human bodies, highlighting the frequency with which they make contact with human remains. Moreover, corpse handlers are frequently subjected to handling bodies that have suffered gruesome injuries and are often disfigured. Additionally, they often encounter the lifeless bodies of past acquaintances or family and friends. The above results from the Namibian law that prescribes that all the bodies of people who have died from unnatural (and often traumatic) circumstances as well as those deceased from mysterious causes are admitted to state facilities for autopsies. Given the unique circumstances of Windhoek state corpse handlers, this study aimed to explore their experiences in order to identify their psychological stressors and coping strategies. Guided by a qualitative approach, a self-designed interview guide was used for data collection. Nine mortuary employees were asked to share their lived experiences. The purpose of the study was to obtain in-depth information about the personal perceptions of these workers relating to their psychological stressors and coping strategies. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was adopted for data processing. Corpse handlers were found to experience psychological stressors such as contact with human remains and stigma unique to their line of work. Furthermore, they were found to engage in coping strategies, including emotional coping, avoidance and escape, to negotiate the demands of those stressors. The study results could be useful for advancing the development of coping and welfare promotion interventions for this population. A presente investigação explora um recente fenómeno de vitimação, o ciberstalking. Este estudo pretende constituir argumento para que o stalking seja criminalizado em Portugal, mas também permitir conhecer a sua prevalência, dinâmica do ciberstalking e as estratégias de coping usadas pelas vítimas, com o objetivo de adquirir conhecimentos que visem uma intervenção adequada com as vítimas de ciberstalking. Os dados foram recolhidos junto de 671 estudantes universitários de várias instituições de ensino superior e de todos os distritos de Portugal, através de um questionário onlinedivulgado por e-maile através das redes sociais. A investigação é composta por um questionário sociodemográfico, pela Escala de Avaliação de Ciberstalking (E.A.C.: Spitzberg & Cupach, 1999; traduzido e validado por Carvalho & Matos, 2010) e pela Escala de Coping no Stalking (E.C.S.: Spitzberg, 2011; traduzido e validado por Carrasquinho, Sani & Soeiro, 2014). Da análise estatística efetuada é possível concluir que a taxa deprevalência de ciberstalking é de 69.1%, quando 36.3% autorrelatou a vitimação. Os comportamentos de ciberstalking mais frequentes são de hiperintimidade. As estratégias de coping mais usadas pelas vítimas de ciberstalking são estratégias que envolvem evitar o contacto ou negar e minimizar os comportamentos do stalker. Foram apuradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas que indicam maior vitimação nas mulheres, nos residentes em regiões insulares, indivíduos divorciados, nos que mantém relações ocasionais e alunos de doutoramento. Este estudo permite conhecer a dinâmica desta forma de violência, o que constitui argumento à criminalização do stalking em Portugal. Permite ainda uma intervenção mais adequada com as vítimas de ciberstalking ao focar o usode respostas assertivas e eficazes.

This investigation explores a recent victimization phenomenon, cyberstalking. This study pretends to constitute an argument for stalking criminalization in Portugal, but also to get to know its prevaillence, cyberstalking dynamics and the coping strategies used by the victims, with the objective of gathering knowledge towards na adequate intervention with cyberstalking victims. The data was collected from 671 college students from several universities and from all Portugal districts, using an online questionnaire released via email and social networks. The investigation is composed by a sociodemographical questionnaire, the Cyber Obsessional Pursuit(E.A.C.: Spitzberg & Cupach, 1999; translated and validated by Carvalho & Matos, 2010) and Stalking Coping Measure(E.C.S.: Spitzberg, 2011; translated and validated by Carrasquinho, Sani & Soeiro, 2014). O presente estudo teve como objetivos caracterizar sócio-demograficamente a amostra de mães de crianças prematuras e obter dados clínicos em relação ao nascimento das crianças, explorar os estilos de vinculação e as estratégias de coping em mães de crianças prematuras em comparação com mães de crianças de termo, e ainda, verificar, dentro das estratégias de coping, quais as mais usadas para cada estilo de vinculação para das duas amostras. Para tal desenvolveu-se um estudo de carácter transversal com duas amostras, uma de 45 mães de crianças prematuras e outra de 45 mães de crianças de termo, ou seja, o grupo de controlo. Os dados relativos à amostra de crianças prematuras foram recolhidos no Departamento de Pedopsiquiatria e Saúde Mental da Infância e da Adolescência do Centro Hospitalar do Porto enquanto que os dados das mães de crianças de termo foram recolhidos no Agrupamento de Escolas de S. João da Madeira. Todas as participantes responderam a um Questionário sócio-demográfico e clínico desenvolvido para o efeito, a Escala de Vinculação do Adulto e o Brief COPE. Os resultados apontam para a inexistência de diferenças entre os dois grupos quanto ao estilo de vinculação, sendo que a maioria das mães apresenta um estilo de vinculação “seguro”. Quanto às estratégias de coping apenas se verificaram diferenças na estratégia de coping “aceitação”, sendo uma estratégia mais utilizada pelas mães de crianças prematuras. Por último, verificou-se que as mães de crianças prematuras com vinculação “preocupada” usam mais a estratégia “coping ativo” enquanto nas de termo são as que têm estilo de vinculação “seguro”. Na estratégia “negação” as mães prematuras que mais utilizam são as com estilo “desligado” e nas de termo “amedrontado”. Na estratégia “uso de substâncias” são as mães prematuras com estilo “seguro” e nas de termo são as com estilo “amedrontado” que mais a utilizam. Não se verificaram diferenças nas restantes estratégias. This study aimed to socio-demographically characterize the sample of mothers of premature infants and obtain clinical data in relation to the birth of children, explore the styles of attachment and coping strategies in mothers of premature infants compared with mothers of term, and also verify what are the coping strategies most used for each style of binding for the two samples. For such it was developed a transversal study with two samples, one of 45 premature infants’ mothers and other 45 term children’ mothers, i.e. the control group.
