▼ Guided wave method is the most recommended non-destructive technique in the industry for pipelines condition inspection. Its characteristics are that it can speedy and widely examine the overall pipelines, and it can estimate the pipelinesâ condition and lifespan. However, it is very common using elbow to promote the pipeline systemâs application efficiency in refining, petrochemical, power plant and gas industries, but the geometry of the elbow changes the guided wave transporting path from symmetric to asymmetric, it could lead to mode conversion. The higher order asymmetric guided waves because of mode conversion influence each other, and the detection signal becomes complex and hard to predict. It would seriously influence the result of guided wave detection. In the previous studies, when the guided wave passes through the elbow, the energy focus on the outer side of the elbow leads to misjudging the seriousness of the defect. The energy of the other elbow areas is too small to detect the defect, and these areas become the more dangerous blind-area. This research firstly uses finite element method to simulate T(0,1) torsional guided wave pass through the defects which in the same geometry shape but at different elbow and straight pipesâ positions, and using the reflected signals to calculate the entire elbow areaâs compensation coefficient map. Let the reflected signals of defect at the elbow return to the original condition. The results are that the compensation coefficients are larger than 1 at inner, top and bottom side of the elbow, and these compensation coefficients become larger as the defectsâ positions approach the end of the elbow. The outer side compensation coefficients are smaller than 1. Besides, the top and bottom side compensation coefficients are symmetric. The compensation coefficient trends are different when the guided wave frequency is different. For example, the inner side compensation coefficients increase first and then decrease with the 30 kHz guided wave, but they simply increase with the 45 kHz guided wave. These results seriously increase the difficulties of making compensation coefficient map. This research also discusses the relationship between different geometry parameters (wall thickness and pipe outer side radius) and guided wavelength. The result shows that the compensation coefficients are very similar at 4 in. and 6 in. pipes when the guided waveâs wavelength ratio is identical to the outer side radius ratio, and this result can solve many difficulties when establishing common compensation coefficient map. The experiment pipeline setup of this research is identical to the numerical setup, and we use guided wave measurement system to detect the reflected signals. We find that the numerical results are larger than experiment results of the inner and top side area. The reason of this results is that the defects are too close to welds, so the defectsâ reflected signals are affected by the weldsâ reflected signals. ▼ This dissertation describes an investigation into the use of whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators for applications towards frequency reference and metrology. Laser stabilization and the measurement of optical frequencies have enabled myriad technologies of both academic and commercial interest. A technology which seems to span both motivations is optical atomic clocks. These devices are virtually unimaginable without the ultra stable lasers plus frequency measurement and down-conversion afforded by Fabry Pérot (FP) cavities and model-locked laser combs, respectively. However, WGM resonators can potentially perform both of these tasks while having the distinct advantages of compactness and simplicity. This work represents progress towards understanding and mitigating the performance limitations of WGM cavities for such applications. ❧ A system for laser frequency stabilization to a the cavity via the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) method is described. While the laser lock itself is found to perform at the level of several parts in 10¹⁵, a variety of fundamental and technical mechanisms destabilize the WGM frequency itself. ❧ Owing to the relatively large thermal expansion coefficients in optical crystals, environmental temperature drifts set the stability limit at time scales greater than the thermal relaxation time of the crystal. Uncompensated, these drifts pull WGM frequencies about 3 orders of magnitude more than they would in an FP cavity. Thus, two temperature compensation schemes are developed. An active scheme measures and stabilizes the mode volume temperature to the level of several nK, reducing the effective temperature coefficient of the resonator to 1.7 × 10⁻⁷ K⁻¹; simulations suggest that the value could eventually be as low as 3.5 × 10⁻⁸ K⁻¹, on par with the aforementioned FP cavities. A second, passive scheme is also described, which employs a heterogeneous resonator structure that capitalizes on the thermo-mechanical properties of one material and the optical properties of another. Calculations show that a temperature coefficient zero-crossing can be achieved, and encouraging initial experimental results are presented. ❧ At shorter time scales, fundamental thermal and technical noise sources define stability limits. The relative strengths of thermorefractive, thermoelastic, and Brownian motion are outlined, along with the level at which they can expect to be observed and some approaches to minimize them. It is shown that variations in the coupling gap pull the frequency at about 10 Hz/nm. A method for calculating frequency noise density caused by laser amplitude fluctuations is presented. ❧ Frequency comb generation in WGM resonators is also discussed. It is shown that cavity dispersion can be engineered through geometric parameters, yielding a microcomb with initial sidebands at 1 FSR from the pump. Such combs are thought to be coherent. Also described is a microcomb generated by a PDH locked pump laser. Le Cycle Organique de Rankine (abrégé ORC de l’anglais Organic Rankine Cycle) est une technologie permettant la conversion de chaleur basse température en électricité. L’ORC transcritique a été identifié comme une solution prometteuse pour la valorisation de la chaleur fatale. Cependant, peu d’installations expérimentales ont permis de confirmer ces performances. Ce travail de thèse présente le fonctionnement et l’optimisation d’ORC sous-critique et transcritique pour la conversion de chaleur basse température en électricité à partir de différentes sources. Premièrement, les contextes thermodynamique et technologique de l’ORC sont présentés. Des critères de performance énergétiques et exergétiques sont définis et appliqués à une base de données d’installations expérimentales afin d’exposer l’état de l’art actuel des ORC. Deuxièmement, les outils numériques et expérimentaux, spécifiquement développés ou utilisé pour ces travaux, sont présentés. Trois installations expérimentales d’ORC transcritique complet ou incomplet fournissent les données expérimentales. Différents modèles numériques sont utilisés : sous l’environnement Matlab pour la modélisation en permanent, l’analyse des données expérimentales et l’analyse énergétique/exergétique ; L’environnement Modelica/Dymola pour l’analyse des transitoires et de la dynamique du système. Dans un troisième temps, ces différents outils sont utilisés pour étudier quatre différentes problématiques : - Le fonctionnement de la pompe de circulation est étudié, d’un point de vue énergétique et volumétrique. Des modèles semi-empiriques et des corrélations de performance sont présentés. - Les transferts thermiques en supercritique sont examinés, en local et en global. Les coefficients de transfert thermique sont comparés avec différentes corrélations de la littérature. - L’influence de la charge de réfrigérant sur les performances et le comportement de l’ORC est analysée. La charge optimale est estimée pour différentes conditions de fonctionnement et des mécanismes de régulation de la charge sont présentés. - Les performances énergétiques et exergétiques de l’ORC sont comparées avec la base de données. Une analyse exergétique du procédé a permis d’identifier des voies d’amélioration.

The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is a technology used for low-grade thermal energy conversion into electricity. Transcritical ORC has been identified as a solution for efficient waste heat recovery. However, few experimental tests have been conducted to confirm the interest of transcritical ORC and investigate its operational behaviors. ▼ A comparison of experimental and calculated responses of a CR-39 detector to neutron spectra from an Am–Be source is presented in this paper. A computer program called Neutron_CR-39.F90 for neutron simulation through a CR-39 detector and its detection was described and developed. The secondary particles are created in different directions and their latent tracks are oriented randomly within the detector. Some tracks will be etched from the point where the particle was created in the direction of the particle motion – this is direct etching. Other tracks will be etched from the point where the particle was stopped or from where it exited from the detector, in an opposite direction to the particle movement – this is the etching in a reverse direction. In this paper a calculation of the track walls etched in the same and opposite directions is described by using Newton’s method. The program Neutron_CR-39.F90 contains subroutine Neutron.f90 for neutron simulation and subroutines Trackfdmsame.f90 and Trackfdmback.f90 for the calculation of created track profiles after detector etching in the same and reverse direction, respectively. Developed program has been used to calculate the neutron dose equivalent rate for the CR-39 detector as well as the track density. Conversion coefficient (sensitivity) between track density in track/cm2 and neutron dose equivalent in mSv, was calculated by using above mentioned program. It has been found that sensitivity increases linearly with removed layer in the investigated range between 6 mm and 24 mm. The neutron equivalent dose rate was measured by an active device, and compared with the calculated one. Good agreement was found between these two independent techniques for equivalent dose determination. The mean neutron fluence to dose equivalent conversion factor, hφ, was determined also, and it is in good agreement with previously published results (Burger and Schwaster, 1988; ISO/DIS 8529, 2000). Experimental and theoretical results, and their agreement, suggest the potentiality of a CR-39 detector for fast neutron dosimetry.

Cette thèse concerne la réalisation des films minces d’oxydes et l’étude de leurs propriétés physiques pour les cellules photovoltaïques (PV) et les modules thermoélectriques. Dans une première partie, les propriétés de l’oxyde de titane TiOx (1,45<x<2) sont mises en évidence pour une utilisation en tant qu’oxyde transparent conducteur optiquement actif à disposer en face avant des cellules PV ou, comme couche de couplage optique à intercaler entre le métal réflecteur et la couche absorbante d’une cellule PV. Les couches sont déposées par ablation laser pulse (PLD). Cette méthode permet d’obtenir des couches stoechiométriques ou déficitaires en oxygène grâce au contrôle de la pression d’oxygène pendant le dépôt. Les couches sont dopées par Nb pour un gain en conductivité électrique et/ou par Nd pour la conversion des photons UV en photons du Proche IR. Les films d’une part, isolants, transparents et luminescents ou d’autre part, conducteurs et absorbants ont été obtenus. La présence de polarons et/ou de bipolarons dans les couches TiO₁,₄₅₋₁,₆₀ explique la discontinuité observée sur leurs courbes de thermoconductivité. Une seconde partie du manuscrit concerne la thermoelectricité ou il est question de modifier les propriétés des cobaltites de calcium pour la conversion en énergie électrique des gradients de température faibles, centres autour de 300-365 K. Le contrôle de la concentration en oxygène des films a permis d’obtenir les phases polymorphes CaxCoO₂, Ca₃Co₄O₉, et Ca₃Co₄O₆,₄₋₆,₈ présentant des comportements semiconducteurs ou métalliques en fonction de la température de dépôt. Les films Ca₃Co₄O₆,₄₋₆,₈ montrent de faibles résistivités (3,8-6 mΩ.cm) et des coefficients de Seebeck élevés (S) ≥ 1000 μV/K qui doivent être confirmes pour que de tels films soient utilisés dans les thermogénérateurs.

This thesis concerns the realization of oxide thin films and the study of their properties for photovoltaic or thermoelectric devices. In the first part, the TiOx properties are studied for use as an optically active transparent conductive oxide to put in front of the PV cells or, as optical coupling layer to interpose between the metal reflector and the absorbent layer of a PV cell. The layers are deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). This method allows to get stoichiometric or oxygen deficient layers by controlling the oxygen partial pressure during the growth. The layers are doped with Nb to enhance electrical conductivity and/or with Nd for the conversion of Ultra-Violet photons to Near Infra-Red photons. Insulating and transparent layers, luminescent layers or conducting and absorbent layers are obtained. The TiO₁,₄₅₋₁,₆₀ films show polaronic or bipolaronic conductivity and exhibited the jump of electrical conductivity with jump height and temperature depending on the nature of the dopants.
