Continental Automotive Systems is a German company that develops control systems for different applications in cars. A control system for electrically powered lift gates that are opened or closed on the driver’s command is one of the products developed. The drive system itself is composed of a spindle that is driven by a DC-motor over a gear and a spring. When developing the control system it is convenient to use a simulation model instead of having to implement it on the system every time. The simulation analytically describes how the system is behaving. In this thesis a simulation model of a drive system and a lift gate is developed and evaluated. The model parameters are estimated using System Identification Toolbox in Matlab.

Continental Automotive Systems är ett tyskt företag som utvecklar styrsystem för olika tillämpningar i bilar. Bland annat utvecklas ett styrsystem till eldrivna bakluckor som öppnas och stängs av föraren per knapptryck. Själva drivanordningen består av en skruv som drivs av en likströmsmotor över en utväxling och en fjäder. Då man vill utveckla styrsystemet utan att behöva implementera det på systemet varje gång är en simuleringsmodell av drivanordningen och luckan ett bra hjälpmedel. Denna simuleringsmodell kan då analytiskt beräkna hur systemet uppför sig. I detta examensarbete har en simuleringsmodell av en drivanordning med tillhörande lucka utvecklats och utvärderats. Modellparametrarna estimerades med hjälp av System Identification Toolbox i Matlab.

Embedded control system design is a complex and error prone task, and there is a great need for better development tools. Today most real-time control systems are static systems, designed in an ad-hoc fashion. A more interactive way of working would give shorter development times, reduced costs for testing, and safer, more robust systems. This thesis presents an interactive prototyping tool called Pålsjö and a controller description language called PAL. Pålsjö allows the user to interactively configure a system. Control systems are defined using block diagrams and blocks may be added and replaced on-line. The static nature of most embedded control systems makes them very sensitive to changes in the hardware or software configuration. There is rarely any interaction between the control loops and the underlying real-time kernel or operating system. From a control engineering perspective, the system executes in open loop. In this thesis, the possibility of using feedback in the scheduling of real-time tasks is explored. This is called feedback scheduling. An algorithm for selecting sampling rates based on the linear quadratic cost is presented. The dependence of the cost function on the sampling interval is investigated. The influence on the control performance from the interaction between the control tasks running concurrently in the real-time kernel is studied. A simulation toolbox for this is presented in the thesis. Designing flexible control systems is much simplified given the proper language support. Therefore the PAL language concept is extended into a new proposed language Friend, which is designed to support the development of flexible embedded control systems through the use of contracts.

3. Zalk, D.M. A simplified, qualitative strategy for the assessment of occupational risks and selection of solutions: Control Banding.

The main objective of this thesis is determining whether the simplified, qualitative risk assessment models and solutions initiatives of Control Banding (CB) can be integrated within the multidisciplinary requirements of occupational risk management. This was achieving practical primary prevention that assists non-experts in obtaining the appropriate controls. Investigative methods include a literature review of CB and solutions initiatives approaches. Research methods include the development, implementation, and evaluation of qualitative risk management models for the health hygiene and safety professions. The results of this thesis include the development of qualitative risk assessment models for nanomaterials and safety, participatory approaches for creating ergonomics programs, and multidisciplinary CB strategies for risk management in the construction sector as well as an occupational health and safety management system. This research unveils an excellent potential for application of CB beyond bulk chemicals, though validated toolkits for ergonomics and safety have not yet been created. CB has been shown to be effective in line with quantitative models when there is an absence of firm toxicological and exposure information, although expertise is required for both validation of control effectiveness and for higher risk tasks. The multidisciplinary CB models presented show tremendous opportunity to protect workers, though more research and validation is necessary for implementation. Outcomes of this research, such as CB and the CB Nantool, have been applied internationally through the WHO and ILO, implemented by national institutes and university programs, and directly transferred into national regulations. Collectively, this thesis is in a position to address the needs of the 2.5 billion workers around the world without access to health and safety experts and increase abilities to achieve prevention of work-related illnesses, diseases, and safety-related accidents and injuries. SAMENVATTING De belangrijkste doelstelling van het proefschrift is vast te stellen of een vereenvoudigd model van risicobepaling en –beheersing middels Control Banding geïntegreerd kan worden in een multidisciplinaire risicomanagementbenadering. Hiermee wordt praktische en primaire preventie mogelijk voor niet-deskundigen door geschikte beheersmaatregelen en oplossingen te selecteren. Om dit te bereiken zijn een aantal stappen gezet. Relevante literatuur over Control Banding is samengevat, evenals literatuur over benaderingen om oplossingen te genereren. Kwalitatieve modellen voor risico bepaling en risico management zijn ontwikkeld, geïmplementeerd en geëevalueerd binnen het domein van de arbeidsveiligheid, -hygiëne en gezondheid.
