▼ The dissertation challenges Russian theorist Mikhail Bakhtin’s argument that the epic is “semi-moribund”. The argument, that absolute epic distance may be “novelized”, is an original contribution to contemporary epic poetic theory. The creative half of the thesis is a contemporary epic poem, titled The Odour of Sanctity. It demonstrates the dissertation’s argument that a poem may be epic without maintaining “absolute epic distance”, and that the cultural truth of the contemporary epic is conveyed via a vast series of fragments.

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo exclusivo a análise do uso de recursos formais épicos na estrutura dramatúrgica da peça Angels in America (Part I, Millennium Approaches, e Part II, Perestroika), do dramaturgo norte-americano Tony Kushner [1956- ]. Trata-se, portanto, de uma análise voltada ao texto dramatúrgico das duas partes da peça, e não às suas encenações e à adaptação televisiva. Nesse texto, são tratadas algumas questões históricas, políticas e sociais dos Estados Unidos da América nos anos de 1980, momento esse em que o ex-ator norte-americano Ronald Reagan estava cumprindo seu segundo mandato como presidente estadunidense e uma doença sem precedentes a AIDS abatia principalmente a comunidade gay. Levando em consideração que esse conteúdo, dada a sua natureza histórica, não pode ser representado pela estrutura do drama convencional, e que por sua vez se insere na esfera formal do épico, procuramos evidenciar e problematizar criticamente os recursos épicos usados no arcabouço formal da peça e, por meio dessa análise, definir qual é o tratamento dado ao épico neste trabalho, que é um marco da dramaturgia kushneriana

This thesis aims at analyzing the use of epic resources in the dramaturgical structure of the play Angels in America (Part I, \"Millennium Approachesänd Part II, \"Perestroika\"), written by the American playwright Tony Kushner [1956 -]. It is an essentially dramaturgical analysis focused on the text of the two parts of the play, and not on their stage productions or television adaptation. Kushners play deals with historical, political and social issues in the context of the United States in the decade of the 1980s, when Ronald Reagan, formerly an actor, was serving his second term as U.S. president and AIDS, a disease of unprecedented severity, spread and decimated the gay community mainly. Since the historical nature of this type of subject cannot be represented within the structure of conventional drama, and since it is characteristic of the epic sphere, we propose to examine the epic resources used in the formal structure of the play and, in the analysis, discuss Kushners approach to the epic in this play, which is a landmark of his dramaturgy

Esta dissertação, que tem como objeto o processo de criação do espetáculo teatral Miopia, investiga as tensas relações entre forma teatral, abordada em suas diversas e contraditórias dramaturgias, e o tecido histórico. Procuramos reler tal experiência estética questionando se é possível enxergar nas cicatrizes, limitações e contradições do espetáculo teatral e do seu processo de criação índices da realidade histórica, caracterizada pelo estágio tardio do sistema capitalista de produção. Para conceituar esta experiência artística, que representou algumas possibilidades de suspensão dialética (sacrifício, aniquilamento, conservação e superação) dos pressupostos do teatro épico sistematizados por Bertolt Brecht, criamos o conceito de labirinto. Utilizamos este conceito porque categorizações geralmente utilizadas na descrição do teatro contemporâneo, como a de teatro pós-dramático, também não se ajustavam ao objeto, já que este levantava questões ligadas à tentativa de configurar características próprias da formação social brasileira. Esta forma do labirinto é caracterizada em Miopia por uma utilização sistemática da alegoria de difícil decifração, entendida aqui em sua aproximação da ruína, do enigma e da incompletude. Apresentada em uma Usina de Compostagem de Lixo, a peça teve sua encenação construída por meio de detritos de formas e procedimentos teatrais tradicionais e a partir do lixo, expondo na própria cena o inacabamento de seu processo de criação. O fracasso das intenções iniciais presentes neste processo pôde ser revelado nesta dissertação como possibilidade de construção de sentido, em que a crise de compreensão em Miopia inseriu o público como criador e consumador do espetáculo teatral, dissolvendo o conceito de obra artística e substituindo-o pela ideia de um ensaio em perpétuo devir.

In this dissertation our object of study is the creative process of the theater performance Miopia. It investigates the tense relations between the theatrical forms, approached by its diverse and contradictory dramatic structures, and the historical weaving. We aim to review this aesthetical experience by questioning the possibility of finding indexes of the historical reality, characterized by the late capitalist production system, as we look into the scars, limitations and contradictions of the theater performance and its creative process. In order to conceptualize this artistic experience, that has presented some possibilities of \"dialectical suspension(̈sacrifice, annihilation, conservation and overcoming) from the Bertolt Brecht\'s epic theater presuppositions, we have come up with the concept of \"labyrinth\". We stick to this concept because the categorizations that are currently used to describe contemporary theater, as the \"postdramaticöne, cannot fit in our object of study, as it has brought up questions that are connected to the attempt of configuring specific characteristics of the Brazilian social development. A presente dissertação visa à leitura do romance As mulheres de Tijucopapo (2004), de Marilene Felinto, com ênfase na leitura das relações entre as alteridades polifônicas e a protagonista Rísia em três etapas do relato a infantil, a adulta e a mítica , em seu emaranhado discursivo. Conduzindo as análises, elegemos como principais hipóteses de comprovação: o não lugar do passado (real ou mítico) ganha o presente durativo pela via da memória; a memória estabelece uma relação construtiva do presente, colocando a experiência em causa com o sujeito enunciativo em sua singularidade; emerge na escritura um jogo temporal ficcional de alteridades articuladas pelo relato da tríade pronominal eu-ela-elas. Fundamentamos este trabalho dissertativo em três capítulos a partir das reflexões de Mikhail Bakhtin e o conceito de dialogismo aplicado ao tratamento da polissemia dos diálogos poéticos da narradora em primeira pessoa; Henri Bergson dá suporte ao relato memorialista ao ultrapassar o histórico, enquanto produção de linguagem ficcional ou inventada; Giorgio Agamben defende as temáticas da infância e da contemporaneidade, eixos basilares da enunciação transgressora presente na forma do romance contemporâneo. Os resultados alcançados ressaltam que, por meio da experiência da linguagem em relato memorialista, no limiar do autobiográfico, as identidades discursivas ou sujeitos dissonantes e desdobrados do eu feminino que narra constroem um movimento temporal de reconstrução da narrativa entre presente, passado e futuro. This thesis regards the reading of the novel The Women of Tijucopapo (2004), by Marilene Felinto, with emphasis on the reading of the relationships between the polyphonic othernesses and the protagonist -Risia- in three stages of the narrative (the child, the adult, and the mythical) in a discursive tangle. During the analysis process, the following primary hypotheses were elected: the non-place of the past (real or mythical) takes the durative present via memory; the memories provides a present constructive relationship placing the experience concerned with the enunciative subject in its singularity; a fictional temporal game of othernesses, which is articulated by the account of the pronominal triad I-SHE-THEY, emerges in the narrative. This paper was founded through three chapters starting from Mikhail Bakhtins reflections and his concept of dialogism applied to the treatment of polysemy of the first-person narrators poetic dialogs; Henri Bergsons supports the memorialist narrative in trancending history, as invented or fictional language production; and Giorgio Agambens arguments childhood and contemporaneity themes, fundamental axis of transgressive enunciation in contemporary novels. Dans le contexte d’une mise en question sans cesse renouvelée des hiérarchies sociales et culturelles dans les sociétés occidentales contemporaines, dont rend compte le développement des études culturelles depuis les années 1960, la publication d’un grand nombre de réécritures romanesques de l’Iliade témoigne d’un mouvement réflexif de la littérature vis-à-vis de sa propre histoire. En observant les tensions dynamiques à l’œuvre dans la rencontre du roman et du discours épique, ce travail de thèse entend proposer une approche du champ littéraire qui ne soit pas fondée sur la division de ce dernier entre culture artistique et culture à destination du grand public, mais conçue sous l’angle d’un partage transmédiatique et transculturel. L’analyse des réécritures romanesques de l’Iliade révèle en effet une convergence des procédés et des discours de part et d’autre du « grand partage » littéraire, au service d’une réflexion commune sur le caractère problématique du canon littéraire. La confrontation des discours épique et romanesque contribue à l’élaboration d’une pensée démocratique de la société, qui repose sur la construction d’un espace narratif traversé par une pluralité de discours génériques et de références culturelles.

Challenging the social and cultural hierarchies which are still authoritative in our contemporary Western societies has been a long-lasting concern of Cultural Studies ever since their development in the 1960s. As evidenced by the great amount of novels set in the fictional world of the Trojan War, which prove themselves to be genuine rewritings of the Iliad narrative, the Western canon and its relevance are equally scrutinized by contemporary novelists. By studying the dynamic conflicts which underlie the encounter between epic discourse and the genre of the novel, this dissertation intends to dispute the concept of a “Great Divide” between artistic and popular culture, and to prove that literature is a transcultural medium. A close study of a few contemporary novelisations of the Iliad brings to light existing shared narrative techniques and discourses undermining the legitimacy of the Western canon. Through the remodeling of the epic genre and its conventions, the novel assumes a democratic approach to society which stems from a narrative architecture hinging on a multiplicity of generic discourses and cultural references.
