This thesis work was organized around the promotion of related products from the first and second processing of wood from the Congo Basin in general and Aucoumea Klaineana Pierre (Okoumé) from Gabon in particular.Indeed, 85% of related products from this industry are incinerated 24 hours a day in the open air, the reason being the absence or the weak ways of possible valorizations. Our primary objective is to present ways of recovery capable of considerably reducing the incineration of this waste. Therefore and to answer this first issue, we proceeded first, by a chemical analysis of the three parts of the wood (bark, sapwood, heart), aiming to highlight the different molecules and their potential areas of development. The molecules mainly targeted are polyphenols. We then focused in particular on the condensed tannins extracted from Okoumé, which we characterized thermally and chemically. To observe their stickiness, including their ability to be used as a substrate for the development of a bio-sourced adhesive for the plywood and panel industry. The second recovery method highlighted is the development of a wood-plastic composite by thermocompression without having gone through a prior extrusion step. This composite can find its use in construction and internal design.

The presented study concerns the development of a composite material (cork flour, binder and additive) in order to produce of technological cork-stoppers carried out by a molding process. As part of this work, the synthesis, the characterization and the formulation of a biobased polymer have been developed as a binder of the composite material. The strategy of this thesis was to develop a polymer obtained by polycondensation of an epoxy compound with an amine curing agent. As a first step, a thorough characterization of the binder used by DIAM Bouchage was carried out to define the specifications of the novel polymer. The study of epoxy and amine compounds led to the selection of biobased commercial and non-classified CMR precursors that meet the specifications. Novel epoxy and amine precursors were synthesized from biobased resources such as vanillin and fatty acid derivatives. The synthesis of epoxy-amine resins was performed with the selected commercial precursors and these resins were characterized thermally, mechanically and physically. Finally, different formulations of technological cork-stoppers were synthesized and characterized to evaluate their suitability with the DIAM Bouchage specifications.

▼ Adhesive bonding which has been in use for long as a traditional joining method has gained ground in the last couple of decades due to the introduction of advanced
composite materials into the aerospace industry. Bonded structures have advantages such as high corrosion and fatigue resistance, ability to join dissimilar materials, reduced stress concentration, uniform stress distribution, good damping characteristics etc. They also have certain limitations like environmental degradation, existence of defects like pores, voids and disbonds, difficulty in maintenance and repair etc. A serious drawback in the use of adhesively bonded structures has been that there are no established comprehensive non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for their evaluation. Further, a reliable evaluation of the effect of the existing defects on strength and durability of
adhesive joints is yet to be achieved. This has been a challenge for the research and development community over several decades and hence, been the motivation behind this piece of research work. Under the scope of the work carried out in the thesis, some of the primary factors such as the existence of defects, degradation of the
adhesive, stress and strain distribution in the bonded region etc., have been considered to study the bond integrity in
composite to
composite lap shear joints. The problem becomes complex if all the parameters affecting the
adhesive joint are varied simultaneously. Taking this into consideration, one of the key parameters affecting the bond quality, viz., the
adhesive layer degradation was chosen to study its effect on the bonded joint. The epoxy layer was added with different, definite amount of Poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) to arrive at sets of bonded joint specimens with varied
adhesive layer properties. A thorough review of different non destructive testing methods applied to this particular problem showed that ultrasonic wave based techniques could be the right choice. To start with, preliminary experimental investigations were carried on unidirectional glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP-epoxy) lap joints. The
adhesive joints were subjected to non destructive evaluation (NDE) using ultrasonic through transmission and pulse echo techniques as also low energy digital X-ray techniques. The results obtained showed a variation in reflected and transmitted ultrasonic pulse amplitude with bond quality. Digital X-Ray radiography technique showed a variation in the intensity of transmitted x-rays due to variation in the density of
adhesive. Standard mechanical tests revealed that the addition of PVA decreased the bond strength. A plot of coefficient of reflection from the first interface and the bond strength showed a linear correlation between them.
After obtaining a cursory feel and understanding of the parameters involved with the preliminary experiments on GFRP
adhesive joints which yielded interesting and encouraging results, further work was carried on specimens made out of autoclave cured carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP)-epoxy…

▼ Thesis M.S. Michigan State University. Mechanical Engineering 2018
An adhesively bonded Pi-/T-joint is a common ‘out-of-plane’ structural joint that connects a vertical (web) and a horizontal (base) load bearing substrates using an adhesive and a 3D-braided π (pi) preform. The stress-transfer between the substrates and the preform occurs through the adhesive bond-line via complex mechanisms that are governed by the loading condition and material properties of the substrates and the adhesive. Resistance strain gages and fiber optic sensors can only provide local/single-point measurement. Moreover, embedding them in the adhesive bond-line is impractical as they act as stress-concentrators and sites for the onset of failure. Optical techniques, especially the photoelasticity coating method, enables the full-field visualization of stress/strain fields. In this work, the Pi-/T-joints were made with aluminum substrates (both web and base) and a carbon fiber pi-preform using SC-15 resin as an adhesive. The joints were manufactured using the liquid resin transfer molding technique. The photoelasticity coating method was used to visualize and measure plane strains and stress directly on the joint using polarized light. The joints were experimentally tested in ‘out-of-plane’ (web pull-out) configuration until failure, and the isochromatic photoelasticity fringes or strain field images from the surface of the specimen were recorded. Force-displacement data were also characterized. Numerical models were developed using commercially available software ABAQUS®. Results show reasonably good agreement between the strain maps from photoelasticity and numerical simulations for similar load levels. Improvements in technique and modeling are suggested in order to improve agreement and to gain added insight into the complex behavior of these joints.

▼ Mussel
adhesive proteins contain catechol moiety, which allows the protein to crosslinked, solidify, and adhere to surrounding surfaces even under wet conditions. Incorporating the catechol moiety into polymeric
adhesive resulted in bioadhesive, which still functions under wet conditions. However, the
adhesive must be oxidized in order to crosslink and adhere to surfaces. The oxidation process of catechol
adhesive was proven to produce singlet oxygen, superoxide, and hydrogen peroxide (H
2O
2). These reactive oxygen species, with lack of control, can wreak havoc to the biological system causing poor healing and undesired biological response.
Here, we studied the silica particle system as a means to control H
2O
2 concentration. After an exploratory investigation on silica particle synthesis and modification, acid-treated silica particle (AHSi) was developed with a highly hydrophilic surface. We then explore the use of reinforcement phase incorporation, creating particle-
adhesive composites and studied the effect which the particle incorporation imparts into the adhesives. The model
adhesive is polyethylene glycol functionalized with glutaric acid and dopamine, creating a biodegradable
adhesive hydrogel. We demonstrated that incorporation of a model particle, silica particle, into a catechol
adhesive resulting in a mechanically stronger
adhesive with an increase in stiffness, adhesion strength, and structural integrity even after partially degraded. Moreover, the
composite adhesive was gelled faster and degrade slower than native PEG-DA
adhesive. The
composite also demonstrated a reduction in the concentration of H
2O
2. The particle not only reduces H
2O
2 but also found to be releasing soluble silica in a biologically relevant concentration further improve their bioreactivity. The silica nanoparticle incorporated catechol-based
composite demonstrated a reduction in cytotoxicity on rat dermal fibroblast, human keratinocyte, and human tenocyte, three types of cells that react differently to elevated oxidative stress.
Interestingly, all cell types have demonstrated an increase in cell proliferation, raising the possibility of developing the
composite adhesive further. The last part of the study involved a prediction model that helps narrow down the formulation to be tested in vivo. Full-thickness dermal wound model in mice was utilized to study the predicted formulation. The results from the animal model suggested that PEG
adhesive alone can alter the biological response with accelerated wound healing. However, the incorporation of AHSi proved to successfully bridge the gap between accelerated wound healing and better wound remodeling. This dissertation describes various strategies used to tune the H
2O
2 concentration released from catechol adhesives to tune its biological response which involved silica particle modification with minimal change in chemical composition, and the selection of
adhesive…

Repairing of metallic structures using composite patches bonded with an adhesive layer is more and more common in the aeronautic field, and particularly at DGA Techniques Aéronautiques. In order to guarantee the quality of this bond, the sensitivity of ultrasonic guided waves is investigated. Shear-horizontally polarized (SH) waves, and Lamb waves are investigated to infer the stiffness of the adhesive layer. The SAFE method is used to predict the dispersion curves and mode shapes of the different wave modes propagating along the three-layer assembly. Numerical simulations are run for selecting the most appropriate wave modes, i.e. with higher sensitivity to the stiffness of the bond than to other components properties. Experiments are also made for generating-detecting pre-selected SH or Lamb wave modes in order to confirm the numerical predictions. Finally the resolution of an inverse problem, consisting in the evaluation of the stiffness modulus of the bond layer between an aluminium plate and a carbon-epoxy composite patch, at different curing time, is proposed as a contribution to the establishment of possible strategies for bonds testing. This work was supported by DGA, France.

▼ Airframe assemblers have long recognised that for a new aircraft to be successful it must use less fuel, have lower maintenance requirements, and be more affordable. One common tactic is the use of innovative materials, such as advanced composites. Composite materials are suited to structural connection by adhesive bonding, which minimises the need for inefficient mechanical fastening. The aim of this PhD project was to investigate the application of existing, yet immature Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques to adhesively bonded composite aerospace structures. The PhD study focused on two emerging SHM technologies - frequency response and comparative vacuum monitoring (CVM). This project aimed to provide missing critical information for each technique. This included determining sensitivity to damage, repeatability of results, and operating limitations for the frequency response method. Study of the CVM technique aimed to address effectiveness of damage detection, manufacture of sensor cavities, and the influence of sensor integration on mechanical performance of bonded structures. Experimental research work is presented examining the potential of frequency response techniques for the detection of debonding in composite-to-composite external patch repairs. Natural frequencies were found to decrease over a discrete frequency range as the debond size increased; confirming that such features could be used to both detect and characterise damage. The effectiveness of the frequency response technique was then confirmed for composite patch and scarf repair specimens for free-free and fixed-fixed boundary conditions. Finally, the viability of the frequency response technique was assessed for a scarf repair of a real aircraft component, where it was found that structural damping limited the maximum useable frequency. The feasibility of CVM technique for the inspection of co-cured stiffener-skin aircraft structures was explored. The creation of sensor cavities with tapered mandrels was found to significantly alter the microstructure of the stiffener, including crimping and waviness of fibres and resin-rich zones between plies. Representative stiffened-skin structure with two sensor cavity configurations (parallel and perpendicular to the stiffener direction) was tested to failure in tension and compression. While tensile failure strength was significantly reduced for both configurations (up to 25%), no appreciable differences in compression properties were found. Two potential sensor cavity configurations were investigated for the extension of the CVM technique to pre-cured and co-bonded scarf repair schemes. The creation of radial and circumferential CVM sensor cavities was found to significantly alter the microstructure of the adhesive bond-line and the architecture of the repair material in the case of the co-bonded repair. These alterations changed the failure mode and reduced the tensile failure strength of the repair. A fibre straightening mechanism responsible for progressive failure (specific to…

▼ Bonding
composite structures using adhesives offers several advantages over mechanical fastening such as better flow stress, weight saving, improved fatigue resistance and the ability to join dissimilar structures. The hesitation to adopt adhesively bonded
composite joints stems from the lack of knowledge regarding damage initiation and propagation mechanisms within the joint. A means of overcoming this hesitation is to continuously monitor damage in the joint. This study proposes a methodology to conduct structural health monitoring (SHM) of an adhesively bonded
composite lap joint using acoustic, guided Lamb waves by detecting, locating and predicting the size of damage. Finite element modeling of a joint in both 2D and 3D is used to test the feasibility of the proposed damage triangulation technique. Experimental validation of the methodology is conducted by detecting the presence, location and size of inflicted damage with the use of tuned guided Lamb waves.

▼ Higher specific properties and corrosion resistance of
fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) pipes make them a potential
candidate for replacing metallic piping structures. This research
project is concerned with adhesively bonded FRP pipe sections. The
project can broadly be classified into three phases. In the first
phase the effects of dimensional scaling as well as fibre
architecture on adhesive bonding strength were studied. A macro
analysis of adhesively bonded FRP pipe sections was conducted
employing a finite element approach in conjunction with strength of
materials and fracture mechanics damage criteria. Through this
phase of the project the most damage-prone components within
adhesively bonded FRP pipe sections were identified. The second
phase of the research project was designed to investigate a
suitable nanofiller material for the reinforcement of the weakest
joint component, i.e. the adhesive bondline. Due to its superior
mechanical properties and relatively low cost, graphene was
considered as the nanofiller. Phase two of the project was further
extended to include a novel modelling technique for characterizing
graphene at the atomistic level. The third and final phase of the
project dealt with the overall impact of graphene nanofiller on the
adhesive material. A multiscale model was developed to investigate
fracture toughening and stability effects with the aim of producing
a nanocomposite with improved mechanical properties.

▼ Resin composite restorations fail prematurely mainly due to biodegradation and bacterial attack, leading to recurrent caries. It is hypothesized that 1) dental adhesives containing drug-silica-co-assembled-particles (DSPs) inhibit interfacial bacterial-biodegradation-markers (BBMs) and reduce interfacial demineralization and cavitation; 2) photothermal radiometry and luminescence (PTR-LUM) technology correlates positively with micro-computed-tomography (µCT) in recurrent caries detection.
In vitro models based on simulated human salivary esterases and cariogenic bacteria to evaluate the effects of DSPs on interfacial biodegradation and recurrent caries development show long-term reduction in BBMs and interfacial demineralization and cavitation, suggesting that DSP-loaded dental adhesives are efficacious in reducing interfacial biodegradation and recurrent caries. PTR-LUM technology (the Canary System Numbers), was positively correlated to demineralization and cavitation measurements by µCT.
Provision of antimicrobial-antidegradative properties to dental adhesives is a promising strategy to improve the longevity of resin composite restorations. Additionally, PTR-LUM technology may aid dental professionals in detecting recurrent caries, without radiation exposure.

▼ This bachelor’s thesis investigates how is the strength of
adhesive bond between dental FRC (Fiber Reinforced
Composite) and
adhesive affected by the type of reinforcement of dental FRC and by the type of
adhesive. The nature of the fracture was investigated also. The strength of
adhesive bond of the experimentally designed samples was measured using universal tensile testing machine in the specially constructed jaws. The nature of the fracture was viewed by the confocal microscope. The obtained results suggest that the strength of
adhesive bond is mostly affected by the type of reinforcement of the FRC provided that there is a good wetting on the FRC surface. In this case, interlaminar strength of FRC was the limiting factor. The strength was lower in the case of FRC with multidirectional (spliced) glass fibers. The strength was also affected in a certain manner by the creation of locations where the stress was concentrated. This effect was most notably in the case of adhesives with the high cohesive strength. The impact of aqueous environment on the stability of
adhesive joint was most major in the case of the low - crosslinked resins and in the case when the molecules of water penetrates into the interface between materials in consequence of poor wetting.

▼ Joints make them attractive in industries such as aeronautics, automotive and civilengineering. When compared to mechanically fastened joints, adhesive joints have theadvantages of having fewer sources of stress concentrations, more uniformdistribution of load, and better fatigue properties. Structures that are adhesivelybonded must be designed in such a way so that certain types of loading should beavoided or at least minimized (cleavage). The adhesive should be mainly loaded inshear if optimum strength is required. Adhesives are generally stronger incompression than in tension, and this should be taken into account in the design byusing appropriate pressure depended yield-failure criteria. The scope of this thesis is the experimental study and numerical analysis of balancedand unbalanced joints with the aim of deeper investigation of the phenomenon, as inliterature, large differences between the experimental results and theoreticalpredictions of the existing bending moment coefficient, especially after the erosion ofthe joint material, which is a random event whose scope we cannot predefined, especially when the adherends have different mechanical properties. The configuration of the Single Lap Joint will be used in the current work, as it issimple to manufacture and is the basis for most joint configurations. Single lap jointswere manufactured using Boron/Epoxy and Aluminum 2024-T3 as adherends andFM94 as adhesive. All joints were manufactured in Hellenic Airspace Industry S.A.(H.A.I S.A.), according to ASTM D-1002. A total of 224 specimens were tested tofailure. One of the aims of the current investigation was to access the effect on theoverlap length on the strength and failure of the single lap joint. Although simple tomanufacture, the single lap joint is quite complex to analyze. The eccentricity of theload path causes the joint to rotate under load. The materials (aluminum 2024-T3 andFM94) can also deform plastically under load. Poisson’s ratio effects will give rise totransverse stresses in both the adhesive and adherends. As a consequence, a threedimensionalstress state develops throughout the joint. The behavior of bothadherends and adhesives in the strength to the joints so both adhesive and adherendsmust be modeled accurately.Joints with four different overlap lengths were manufactured, ranging from 13mm to40mm (20 and 30mm). The free length was kept constant at 63.5mm for all the jointconfigurations. Another parameter affecting the strength of joints is the glue linethickness, which kept constant at 0.04mm. Most specimens remain in a salt spraychamber for 72, 166, and 236 hours, respectively at 35 °C with 5% NaCl, in order toinvestigate the effect of a controlled corrosive environment in the strength and failureof the specimens. Once the stress and strain states have been defined by usingappropriate modeling procedures and criteria, then a failure analysis will be needed. The failure criteria must be applicable in a variety of cases and basic materialproperties (from tensile and shear tests) should be used…

▼ The bond strength may be influenced by the different composition and manipulation of the adhesive systems, the dentin structure and the method of evaluation. After exposure of the occlusal dentin surface 160 third human molars were divided in 2 groups (n=80) for the micropush-out (μPBS) and microshear (μSBS) bond strength tests. For the μPBS, 4 groups (n=20) were obtained and a tapered cavity (2,5x1,5x1,0mm) was prepared on the dentin surface and restored with composite resin after treatment using different adhesive systems: Adper Single Bond, Adper Scotchbond MP, Prompt-L-Pop, AdheSE. After water storage for 24 hours, from 10 teeth per group, 1 oclusal slice (1,5 0,3mm) was obtained from each tooth, and the restoration submitted to vertical load. The other 10 teeth were storage for 12 months and then submitted to the same procedure. For the μSBS another 80 teeth were divided into 4 groups (n=20), the dentin surface was treated using the same adhesive systems and composite resin cylinders (1x1mm) were constructed and polymerized in a single increment onto the bonding area. Ten specimens were tested after 24 hours and 10 after 12 months of water storage. The null hypotheses were that (1) the composition and manipulation of the adhesive systems, (2) the water storage and (3) the method of evaluation might influence the bond strength of direct composite resin restorations. Results of ANOVA did not show significant difference for the storage time factor (p=.6343), but there was difference between the methods (p<.0001), with higher values for the μPBS test, and among the adhesive systems (p<.0001). The Adper Scotchbond and AdheSE systems presented higher bond strength values. Adhesive x method (p=.0002) and adhesive x method x time (p=.0037) interactions were significant, with different behaviors from adhesive systems within the method and time of evaluation. Conclusions were that the storage time might be not sufficient to result in alterations and that adhesive systems composition and manipulation might influence the bond strength. The μPBS test, presented the higher bond values with lower coefficient of variation, indicating more consistence than the μSBS test, besides of reproduce more faithfully clinical conditions.

▼ This master thesis is done at a Defense & Security Company in cooperation with
the department of Industrial and Materials Science at Chalmers University of Technology.
This thesis is an evaluation of adhesive bonds between composite to composite, and
composite to metal in different environments. The different environments are simulated
only by temperature variations to represent environmental conditions of land,
sea and air. The evaluation is done through a literature study and experimental
mechanical testing. The literature study resulted in a theoretical background that
comprises knowledge about composites, adhesive joints and surface treatments prior
to adhesive bonding.
The experimental part of the evaluation is done to determine the tensile shear
strength of a single-lap bond, with a test method similar to ISO4578. The material
combinations tested are mostly based on usability for the Defense & Security
Company, resulting in tests of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) adhered to
GFRP, GFRP adhered to aluminium and aramid fiber reinforced polymer (AFRP)
adhered to aluminium.
All test series were bonded with the adhesive film, FM 300-2M. All combinations
were tested in room temperature and at elevated temperature. GFRP to aluminium
and AFRP to aluminium were tested after pre-conditioning by temperature cycling.
Sandblasting was used as surface treatment for all the test samples. Production
of the test samples and the adhesion process were done externally at Elitkomposit
AB and the tensile shear testing was conducted at the Defense & Security Company.
When bonding GFRP to GFRP the results showed that mechanical joints could be
replaced with single-lap adhesive bonds. However, the results from the dissimilar
test series were promising as the shear strength was high, but the it varied within
each test series. Therefore, the mechanical joints can not be replaced based on these
results. Further evaluation and testing are recommended in order to replace mechanical
joints with adhesive bonds when dissimilar material are used.

Considering the wide application range of composite materials for retrofitting civil engineering structures, it is found important to study the strain rate dependent behavior of both composite materials and some structural adhesive epoxies. Mechanical properties of Sikacarbodur S512 and adhesives bonding materials show different behavior when analyzed at different strain rates. Moreover, it was found that Sikacarbodur S512 is not a ductile material since it cannot sustain inelastic deformation because an elastic range governs its mechanical behavior. Epoxies adhesive do not have a significant plastic range; a viscoelastic range governs their main mechanical behavior under tensile loads. Sikacarbodur S512 analyses using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the fracture behavior is addressed by the interphase zone (contact zone between fiber and resin) which is affected by tensile stress concentration and cracks propagations. SEM analyses before and after tensile tests of both Sikadur 30 and Sikadur 330 shows that they have a continuous phase and a granular phase. In both resins, covalent bonds are broken, however sikadur 30 shows the most critical behavior. Sikadur 330 has better mechanical behavior under uniaxial tensile test than sikadur 30, and this better behavior is realized when their tensile strain to break and absorbed energy capacity are compared.

zubna tkiva. Osnovni nedostatak kompozitnih materijala i dalje
zamenika. Testiran je uticaj zamene dela staklenih punilaca jednim
od pet oblika HAP punilaca (nanočestičnim, mikročestičnim: sferama
sa i bez dopiranja silicijumom i trakama sa i bez dopiranja
čvrstoću, savojni moduo elastičnosti, kompresivnu čvrstoću i
kompresivni moduo elastičnosti eksperimentalnih kompozita,
inicijalno i nakon „starenja‟. Optimalan maseni udeo punilaca na
bazi HAP-a odreĎen je pilot studijama. Osim toga, dva oblika
nanočestičnog HAP-a (u obliku nano-iglica i nano-traka) u udelima
a skenirajućom elektronskom mikroskopijom morfologija interakcije
dobijenih adheziva sa dentinom. U trećem delu studije ispitivan je
uticaj primene inserata na bazi HAP-a (standardizovani inleji) na
zapreminsku kontrakciju i pomeranje materijala metodom korelacije
modifikovanim glas jonomer cementom. TakoĎe je merena jačina veze
HAP inserata sa pomenutim materijalima. HAP punioci svojim
nedelje...

▼ An electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) is a composite material acting as a conductive paste, which consists of a thermoset loaded with conductive fillers (typically silver (Ag)). Many works that focus on this line of research were successful at making strides to improve its main weakness of low electrical conductivity. Most research focused on developing better silver fillers and co-fillers, or utilizing conductive polymers to improve its electrical conductivity, however, most of these works are carried out on small scale. In this work, we aim to produce larger quantities of hybrid ECA to successfully test its properties.
Industry is interested in materials with superior physical properties. As such, rheological behavior and mechanical strength were explored as it has been theoretically hinted that incorporation of exfoliated graphene within the composite could impact those factors listed in a positive manner.
In the first step of this project, pre-treated sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-decorated graphene’s rheological properties were examined. An epoxy resin diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) was the main polymer used for this study: a well-known material that can behave either as a shear-thinning or shear-thickening material depending on the supplier. We showed how composites that contain graphene (Gr) had higher viscosities than ones that contained SDS decorated graphene Gr(s). Not only did we confirm that surfactant was a key factor in the decrease of viscosity, but we also report how Gr and Gr(s) had a special effect that suppresses the intrinsic shear thickening behavior of epoxy resin at weight concentrations (wt%) higher than 0.5 wt%. The results showed that Gr(s) is not only beneficial in terms of improving the conductivity of conventional ECAs, but it also acts as a solid lubricant that decreases the viscosity of the composite paste at higher weight concentrations.
In the second step of the project, pre-treated SDS decorated graphene’s mechanical properties were examined. In specific, its lap-shear strength (LSS) as well as the effect of residual solvent when present in our hybrid ECA system were studied in order to follow up on the thermal results obtained from a previous study. We showed that our initial suspicion was correct as the LSS did decrease for all of the solvent-assisted formulations that contained Gr(s) ranging from 66 to 84%, however, we were not able to tell whether or not that decrease was caused by lower crosslinking density. Instead, we uncovered another reason for this decrease: bubble formation during the curing step. This suspicion was confirmed qualitatively through light microscopy and quantitatively through optical profilometry, where we present an increase in surface roughness for the solvent-assisted samples. Furthermore, by using SEM, we also confirmed that this bubble formation extends throughout the entire bulk material rather than just at the interface. Lastly, we investigated whether the use of solvent to assist in the mixing process significantly improves the…

▼ In an era where there are growing concerns about the
continued use of fossil fuels with approximately 71% of the
petroleum used in the United States for transportation (U.S. Energy
Information Administration, 2012), improving vehicle fuel economy
is critically important. Vehicle weight reduction is a well-known
strategy for reducing fossil fuel use in passenger vehicles and for
every 10% reduction in weight, the result will be an approximately
7% reduction in fuel consumption. There are three different paths
that can be followed in order to achieve substantial vehicle weight
reductions – material substitution, vehicle downsizing, and vehicle
redesign. Material substitution is the current focus of most of the
automotive world because its minimal effect on time and costs.
Vehicle redesign requires vast amounts of time and money; therefore
it is only undertaken when necessary. It consists of redesign of
the structural elements, completely new body styling, and
powertrain redesign, among a myriad of other tasks. The focus of
this thesis is on research of a new adaptive system of joining
composite structural members which combines the best features of
mechanical joints and
adhesive joints without the substantial
disadvantages of either one. The key element to the system is a
compressive force element based on a wedge profile. The addition of
compressive force minimizes the possibility of peel back of the
adhesive and increases its shear strength by approximately three
times. Along with the ability for disassembly, the combination
mechanical/
adhesive joint results in a multi-mode system of
failure. With further work on more complex loading modes, the new
joining system should allow for design of new vehicle structures
similar to the space frame designs used by Audi (aluminum) and
NASCAR (steel), except with carbon fiber.

▼ The success of lightweight automotive multi-material assemblies depends on selecting appropriate joining techniques that can provide the expected day-to-day operational strength while delivering occupant protection during crash scenarios and long-term durability performance. Epoxy-based adhesives provide an important joining method to increase structural stiffness and enable the joining of dissimilar materials for multi-material assemblies. However, the design of adhesive joints requires mechanical data to support integration in vehicles and computer aided engineering design. The objective of this research was to address a deficit in the identification and quantification of damage in epoxy adhesive materials under applied loading, which is critical for constitutive models that can be used in the numerical representation of structural epoxy adhesive materials.
Three structural epoxy adhesive formulations: a non-toughened single-part epoxy (EC-2214, 3M); a two-part toughened epoxy (DP-460NS, 3M); and a high toughness single-part epoxy (SA-9850, 3M); were tested to failure under tension and shear loading conditions over a range of strain rates (0.002–100 s-1). The measured mechanical data was implemented in constitutive models using two approaches (cohesive zone model and continuum solid element formulation) and verified using finite element simulations of the experiments. This study provided understanding regarding the mechanical response of structural adhesives to loading and the relationship between shear and tensile strength, differences in non-recoverable mechanical response, and the mode of failure for different adhesive formulations (localization and brittle failure, development of strain whitening and ductile failure). Adhesives strength increased with increases in strain rate for all three materials, and limitations in current modeling approaches such as the use of a von Mises yield surface and assuming coupling of strain rate effects between different modes of loading, were identified. Importantly, strain whitening was observed on the surface of the specimens during testing, and exhibited varying intensity and distribution depending on the strain rate and material type. A paucity of damage data for structural adhesives was identified in the literature. This information is necessary to define or enhance failure criteria in finite element simulations, which in turn can improve the physical representation of adhesive materials in numerical simulations.
A follow-on study investigated the viability of using Vickers microhardness measurements as a forensic technique to quantify damage in structural adhesives. The study used tensile specimens machined from bulk adhesive and tested to failure over a range of strain rates (0.002-100 s-1). Pre-test reference microhardness measurements were compared to post-test hardness measurements along the gauge length of the test specimens. The changes in microhardness were used to indirectly measure damage in the materials. In general, for toughened epoxies, the damage extended…

▼ This thesis deals with junction points of construction used in transport infrastructure, which are made of FRP
composite material. Main focus is on bonded joints. The material and geometrical criteria od FRP material and there influence to junctions are analyzed. In sequential steps the development of the design of joints applicable to reference constructions - pedestrian walkways is documented. There are also presented practical experiences from the tests of joints of overlapped and single-sided joints, as well as experience from the design, production and testing of two types of pedestrian bridges on a real scale. Furthermore, extensive comparison of joints, in particular T-joints with closed profiles for selected types of fasteners, is provided. From a simple connection, screws and rivets or plain bonding to combined joints. These are assessed both in terms of bearing capacity and their deformation behavior. These tests are performed for two material combinations, FRP-FRP and FRP-steel.

Adhesive bonding of composite materials has undeniable advantages over other methods such as bolting or riveting. However, one of the difficulties encountered by designers is the prediction of the failure level and failure mode of these adhesively bonded assemblies. In the case of composite laminates, one of the factors acting on the bonded joint behaviour is the stacking sequence, but works presented in the literature do not separate global effects (membrane and bending stiffness modification) and local effect (ply orientation near the adhesive layer). This study deals with the characterization of such effects in the case of single lap joints of carbon/epoxy laminates. In order to isolate the local effects, specific quasi isotropic quasi homogeneous stacking sequences are used. When stiffness properties are maintained constant, strength variations of more than 30 % are observed. Tests performed with a symmetric laminate with bending anisotropy show that the bending stiffness plays also an important role in the joint behaviour. Closed form models are able to predict global effects with a good accuracy but are inappropriate when local effects occur. The use of finite element models can account for these phenomena, by explicitly modelling the laminate plies near…

▼ Bonded repair is one of the structural repair technologies that the aircraft industry uses to restore the strength of fuselage structures and increase the life of an aircraft. Bonded repairs are superior to the conventional metallic fastened repairs in that the former yield a higher stiffness and lower stress concentrations and are more aerodynamically and structurally efficient. Bonded repair technology has been used to repair military aircraft for over three decades but has not been certified for repairing commercial aircraft due to the lack of sufficient performance data to support their airworthiness. Experimental work and analytical modeling of bonded repairs have also been limited to those of flat coupon specimen under ambient environmental conditions. In this study, experimental and analytical work on a full-scale curved fuselage panel with various bonded repairs is conducted to investigate their durability and integrity. The experimental work was carried out using the Federal Aviation Administration's Full-Scale Aircraft Structural Test Evaluation and Research fixture. The objectives are to characterize the durability and fatigue performance of boron/epoxy (B/Ep) and aluminum bonded repairs under a simulated service load condition over the design service life of the airplane and to investigate tools for evaluating and monitoring the repair integrity over the life of the part. During all test phases, damage formation and growth of cracks and disbonds were monitored and recorded using a structural health monitoring system and several nondestructive inspection methods. In addition, strains in the vicinity of the repair patches were continuously recording using strain gages and the digital image correlation method. Experimental results indicated that the bonded repairs are effective to reduce the fatigue crack growth rate. A linear elastic fracture mechanics based analytical model is developed to predict the growth rates of fatigue cracks in the curved panel repaired by bonded patches. The unique feature of this model is that, by using a fuselage-dependent geometric correction factor and incorporating the bonded repair theory, this model can be applied to predict the growth of a crack under any type of bonded repair in a given fuselage. The model has been validated by comparing the predicted crack growth rate results with that obtained experimentally.

▼ Composites are widely utilised in aerospace structures, especially for the newer generation designs, due to their advanced properties such as high strength to weight ratios and durability. Understanding the failure of bonded joints with composite adherends is key for designers, particularly within the aerospace industry, for both a safe design and meeting the aircraft regulation standards. This thesis investigates both experimentally and numerically the effects of environmental conditions on the strength of Double Lap Joints (DLJ) with composite adherends, for different geometrical and loading conditions. The environmental conditions tested are at Room Temperature Dry (RTD), Hot Temperature Dry (HTD) and Hot Temperature Wet (HTW). The mechanical properties of both the adhesive and composite are characterised at these environmental conditions. DLJ tests for pristine, impacted and specimens with artificial defects are tested. Analytical models using simple calculations are used to determine the failure modes. Numerical model using Cohesive Zone Models (CZM) are used to predict and further understand the DLJ behaviour through sensitivity analyses. During the characterisation tests, it is found that Mode I fracture energy increases whereas Mode II decreases with increasing temperature and moisture for both adhesive and composite. A distinct change in failure mechanism is also found with the influence of temperature and moisture. The effects of overlap length, adherend and adhesive thickness on the pristine DLJ strength at different environmental conditions are analysed and discussed. Following the pristine tests, the residual tensile strength after through-thickness impact and the effects of artificial defects (disbond) on the strength of DLJ are also studied. The impact is applied at RTD and followed by tensile tests at different environmental conditions. Disbond cases are represented by inserting an artificial defect in the bondline during the manufacturing process and is followed by tests at different environmental conditions. For all DLJ, increasing temperature and moisture had a significant effect on the strength, failure mechanisms and fracture surface.

▼ The use of
composite materials in the aircraft industry has been increasing in recent years due to their application in structural parts. To reduce the production costs of these components the join between skins and stiffeners is made by means of an
adhesive. In order to guarantee that the bonded joint fulfils the structural requirements, experimental tests on specimens are done from the first development tasks and throughout the production stages.
In the present work, an analysis of the experimental test methods to determine the quality of bonded joints has been performed - the quality of bonded joints depends on the quality of the surface preparation, the
adhesive properties and the compatibility between the
adhesive and the adherents. The work focuses on two objectives: the improvement of the double cantilever beam test, and the development of an alternative method of bonded joint characterization based on driving a wedge into the
adhesive layer (Wedge Driven Test, WDT). In the double cantilever beam test, a mechanical fixture tool has been designed and a data reduction method for stick-slip crack propagation has been developed. On the other hand, the alternative test method such as the DCB, focuses on determining the fracture toughness in mode I of the
adhesive joint, by means of introducing a wedge inside the specimen at a constant speed rate.
To prove the sensitivity of the WDT to the quality of the
adhesive joint, a series of testing campaigns has been performed over 4
adhesive joint configurations (combining 2 adhesives and 2 adherents). Moreover, deliberately produced bad surface preparations have been tested. From the test results, it has been observed that the driven wedge test exhibits an equivalent behaviour to the double cantilever beam test and has a similar level of sensitivity to the quality of the bonded joint.

El objetivo de esta tesis se centró en analizar el desarrollo de la odontología adhesiva;
grietas o márgenes no continuos.

▼ A
composite material is composed of fibers embedded in a matrix and is called Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Particularly, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) has carbon fiber as the reinforcement. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio and is not less susceptible to fatigue or corrosion compared to metallic materials. Therefore,
composite materials like CFRP find applications in aerospace industry due to their low weight and advanced mechanical properties. For large scale
composite structures, smaller parts often need to be connected together. The connection of these parts could be done either by mechanical joints such as fasteners or by gluing them together using adhesives. This research focuses on bonded
composite structures. A prevailing problem in bonded joints is the indeterminate nature of the strength of the
adhesive bond. Low strength bonds, i.e., weak bonds, are very difficult to detect and may become the cause of catastrophic failure. Hence, this work aims to develop a technique based on highly nonlinear waves called solitary waves to detect weak bonds. Nonlinear solitary waves can be generated in a 1-D chain of granular crystals, which consists of discrete particles having nonlinear interactions. Solitary waves are high energy packets, which maintain a finite spatial width while traveling. These waves, traveling in the granular chain, can be transmitted into the specimen by making direct contact with the chain. The reflected wave pattern from the specimen can give information about the localized stiffness of the specimen. In this study, two kinds of CFRP specimens are fabricated - one with pristine bond and the other with a weak bond. For making a weak bond specimen, mold release agent is used to coat the surface of CFRP laminate prior to bonding. This coating acts as an impurity at the bondline and is an example of poor surface preparation. First, standard tests such as the three point bending and the end notched flexure tests are conducted to demonstrate that the strength of the bond is reduced due to the presence of the release agent coating. Further, impact test by solitary wave injection is conducted to cause weak bonds to develop delamination and obtain the response of solitary waves reflected from the specimens. We study the reflected wave characteristics for weak bond detection. Two cases are considered; in the first case, two specimens - pristine and weak bond samples, both without having an initial crack - are tested. In the second case, two specimens - pristine and weak bond samples, both with an initial crack - are tested. The results differentiate the weak bond with the pristine bond based on reflected wave characteristics. This study shows promising results indicating the potential of solitary wave-based detection of weak bond for hot spot monitoring of
composite-based structures.
