▼ We identify the number of compatibility conditions in 2-D and 3-D discrete structures as a measurement device in determining the rigidity of structures and their resilience to damage. Different shortcuts in counting compatibility conditions are developed and proved. Computing discrete compatibility conditions in hexagonal structures that undergo small enough deformation to be safely linearized, and using these results to say something about the continuum compatibility condition, is the main part of this document. Namely, it is shown that the linearized discrete compatibility condition of hexagonal lattices imposes the 2-D infinitesimal compatibility condition. The computation of discrete 3-D compatibility conditions is done by studying a cuboctahedron. The results show that, because of its infinitesimal flexibility, the extra degree of freedom in a linearized system produces an extra compatibility condition. However, the breaking of nongeneric symmetry of a cuboctahedron by any nonzero perturbation of its nodes makes it infinitesimally rigid, and the extra compatibility condition is lost. The role that compatibility conditions play in damaged structures is demonstrated by experiments on hexagonal lattices. The correlation between the loss of compatibility conditions and the spread of damage is made, as well as the importance of strategic placing of stronger and weaker links in an attempt to strengthen a structure with given boundary conditions and loading.

▼ Over the past three years, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) has emerged as a critical aspect of electrical and electronic design. In particular, this field of study has moved from being a specialist "stand alone" discipline undertaken by research institutes and the military to a topic that is of concern to everybody dealing with electrical/electronic products or services. The main impetus for this lift in profile has been the recent introduction of legislation concerning EMC which has been universally adopted by all member countries of the European Union (EU). This legislation, initially introduced in 1992, is referred to as "the EMC directive, 89/336/EEC" and is widely regarded as "the most comprehensive, complex and possibly contentious directive ever to emanate from Brussels". The EMC Directive has not only unified the EMC requirements for trade throughout the European Union but has effectively led the way for EMC standards throughout the commercial world.
The main objectives of this thesis are to outline the basic principles of EMC, detail the requirements of the latest standards and associated testing techniques and to illustrate the issues that need to be addressed by design engineers in order to achieve EMC compliance. A practical and economical EMC test set up is documented and measurement results obtained from Switch-Mode Power Supply equipment are compared to fully calibrated measurements taken at a third party test house in order to determine the accuracy and thus usefulness of these "pre-compliance" test measurements.

▼ The pre-service undergraduate education internship is a short, but intensely influential period of time for both interns and mentors.
Compatibility between the intern and mentor can contribute to a positive relationship and help to ensure a successful internship experience for both parties. Predicting
compatibility can increase the chance of successful internship experiences.
The primary purpose of this study was to identify measurable factors contributing to intern-mentor
compatibility, and to assemble those factors into a
compatibility instrument. A theoretical framework informed the structure of the
compatibility instrument in four categories: personality, relationship skills, applied skills, and expectations. The secondary purpose of this study was to gain insight into the ways in which personality, skills, and expectations intersect within the intern-mentor relationship, and how those intersections are reflected in the theoretical framework.
The results of this study were applied to five research questions: 1) What traits are perceived as critical to describe a successful internship match? 2) How do those traits group together into measurable factors? 3) How can these factors and traits be combined to create a
compatibility instrument that attains the highest coverage of those factors in the smallest number of items? 4) What theoretical and practical intersections exist between categories and factors? 5) What theoretical and practical advancements can be achieved from the intersections of categories, factors, and traits?
A mixed methods research design was used to address these questions. Qualitative data was collected through interpretation panels. The results of the qualitative phase informed the creation of a 100-item pilot survey, which was deployed in the quantitative phase. Quantitative analysis refined the pilot survey to a final 50-item
compatibility instrument. The final 50-item instrument measures 17 factors across the four categories of the theoretical framework. Implications for deployment of the
compatibility instrument, and directions for future research are presented.

▼ The tree compatibility problem is a basic special case of the supertree problem. A supertree method is a way to synthesize a collection of phylogenetic trees with partially overlapping taxon sets into a single supertree that represents the information in the input trees. The supertree approach, proposed in the early 90s [5, 6], has been used successfully to build large-scale phylogenies [7].
The original supertree methods were limited to input trees where only the leaves are labeled. We present a new graph-based approach to the following basic problem in phylogenetic tree construction. Let P = {T1 , . . . , Tk } be a collection of rooted phylogenetic trees over various subsets of a set of species. The tree compatibility problem asks whether there is a phylogenetic tree T with the following property: for each i ∈ {1, . . . , k}, Ti can be obtained from the restriction of T to the species set of Ti by contracting zero or more edges. If such a tree T exists, we say that P is compatible and that T displays P.
Our approach leads to a O(MP log2 MP ) algorithm for the tree compatibility problem, where MP is the total number of nodes and edges in P. Our algorithm either returns a tree that displays P or reports that P is incompatible. Unlike previous algorithms, the running time of our method does not depend on the degrees of the nodes in the input trees. Thus, our algorithm is equally fast on highly resolved and highly unresolved trees.
Semi-labeled trees are phylogenies whose internal nodes may be labeled by higher-order taxa. Thus, a leaf labeled Mus musculus could nest within a subtree whose root node is labeled Rodentia, which itself could nest within a subtree whose root is labeled Mammalia. Suppose we are given collection P of semi- labeled trees over various subsets of a set of taxa. The ancestral compatibility problem asks whether there is a semi-labeled tree T that respects the clusterings and the ancestor/descendant relationships implied by the trees in P. We give a O ̃(MP) algorithm for the ancestral compatibility problem, where MP is the total number of nodes and edges in the trees in P. Unlike the best previous algorithm, the running time of our method does not depend on the degrees of the nodes in the input trees.

▼ Introduction: Electromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC) means the ability of a device to function properly in its intended environment without introducing intolerable electromagnetic interference in that environment [1]. EMC education is a part of electrical and electronic engineering curriculum in many Universities. Full-Compliance EMC measurements require special measurement environment and equipment that are not available in many Universities for teaching purposes.
This paper presents alternative measurement methods for demonstrating different EMC phenomena. These methods are simple and easy to realise with basic electronics measurement equipment in a normal teaching laboratory. The presented measurements are divided according to the EMC test standards. Each presented measurement and test method has been tested. Simple digital electronics boards and Raspberry PI computer have been used as example devices. This paper is based on a Licentiate thesis made by the main author during 2015-2016 [2].
It is important to underline that these measurement methods are not comparable to standard tests but these can be used to learn and better understand different EMC phenomena and design rules to make a device EMC compliant. These measurements can also help students to better understand general electromagnetics from engineering perspective. In addition to teaching purposes, these measurement methods are suitable to be used for the EMC troubleshooting and EMC Pre-Compliance testing in prototype phase or to check the effectiveness of design changes after failed standard measurement and before a retest.

▼ Two line hybrid rice breeding is widely used in Asia and involves the use of environmentally-sensitive male sterile lines to achieve high grain yields compared to pure line varieties. Currently, there is limited information concerning the performance and inheritance of two indica male sterile lines 2008S and 2009S under U.S. field conditions. The first objective of the research herein was to characterize genetic male sterility of lines 2009S and 2008S under controlled environment conditions. Results showed that 2009S exhibited a thermosensitive response whereas little or no response was observed with changes in daylength. Furthermore, high pollen fertility was achieved at the proper developmental stage (flag leaf not fully exposed) under low temperature treatment for 10 days. On the other hand, 2008S showed partial fertility when subjected to short daylength and high temperature conditions. Both lines were completely male sterile at high temperature and long daylength under Louisiana field conditions. The second objective was two-fold: to investigate the inheritance of photoperiod, thermosensitive genetic male sterility (PTGMS) under field conditions and to evaluate SNP-based markers for male sterility. A three-year study of 2008S F2 and BC1F2 populations from 2012 to 2014 revealed a two-locus segregation model indicating two recessive genes acting on male sterility. Inheritance of 2009S in a two-year study from 2013 and 2014 displayed single locus segregation using F2 and BC1F2 populations demonstrating that male sterility was controlled by a single recessive gene. SNP markers at LOC_Os07g12130 and LOC_Os12g36030 in the 2008S background showed significant interactions with up to 65% variance explained in one population, while a SNP marker at LOC_Os02g12290 identified 90-100% of male sterile lines segregating in F2 and BC1F2 populations derived from 2009S. The third objective was to conduct QTL mapping for male sterility in populations derived from 2008S using a selective genotyping approach. A total of five major QTLs including those previously identified in LOC_Os07g12130 and LOC_Os12g36030 and eight new minor QTLs were detected using single marker analysis. Four QTL intervals were detected with a LOD score of greater than 3.0 using inclusive composite interval mapping (ICIM). QTLs identified will be useful in future studies to fine-map additional markers associated with male sterility and increase prediction accuracy for marker assisted selection. The fourth objective was to investigate the effect of the S5n wide compatibility gene on grain yield and spikelet fertility in hybrids derived from the SB5 RIL mapping population. Results from this study revealed that heterozygous S5n S5j hybrids produced significantly higher spikelet fertility and yield versus the hybrids carrying S5i S5j genotypes. Indel and SNP markers developed for the S5 locus successfully differentiated the three unique genotypes (S5n, S5i and S5j). Overall results from this study demonstrated that male sterile lines 2008S and 2009S were useful for…

▼ New architecture will invariable be placed next to the old architecture because cities and human settlements last for generations and as humans and tribal species we invariably congregate and build new buildings to live-in, work-in and entertain in. Thus we create cities from ever increasing smaller settlements. And the city is the playground where the new merges with that which has been built already – merging the new and the old.
Old town Alexandria is one such place where new and old exist side by side. There is no question that new architecture will be built. The questions are only what the new architecture will look like? What will it's existence respond to and what issues we as a society will choose to tackle with new architecture, if any. Will the new architecture and particularly infill architecture convey a purpose and meaning to rival that of its time-tested historic neighbors? And how the meaning and purpose be achieved in new architecture?
This thesis explores the topic of new/ infill architecture finding place in historic districts in particular - Old Town Alexandria Historic District and Parker-Gray district. What has been the approach that has dictated the image and purpose of new architecture in historic districts in Alexandria? And can the new architecture have meaning and purpose all its own to rival that of its predecessors.

▼ This exploratory study examined perceived sibling compatibility and the effects of personality factors on 134 sibling pairs of older adolescents. The sibling pairs completed an Internet-based survey with a demographic questionnaire and two
measures. The Lifespan Sibling Relationship Scale (LSRS; Riggio, 2000) measured perceived sibling compatibility, and the Inventory of Children’s Individual Differences (ICID; Halverson & Havill, et al., 2003) measured personality structure. Results
showed that high compatibility sibling pairs were more likely to share in the same levels of certain personality factors and that Agreeableness was most important when predicting perceived sibling compatibility.

In the iron ore industry, the size of iron ore products are required to be within the proper range for better handling, transportation and storage. Grinding and compaction are widely used for size reduction and aggregation of raw iron ore. Both processes are capital- and energy-intensive. Therefore, it is important that the grinding and compaction process are properly designed and operated at optimum operating conditions.Grinding is a common process to reduce particle size. Improving grinding energy efficiency, however, represents a significant challenging problem in research community for years. The phenomena involved in grinding are very complicated and multi-scaled. Correspondingly, the control and optimisation of a grinding process is better developed at the particle scale. The grinding performance of a grinding circuit depends on the grinding environment as well as and the 'grindability' ofthe feed particles. To test the grindability of particles, two types of experiments can be conducted. One is to test the bulk grindability of particles (e.g. the Bond index). Another is to investigate the breakage behaviour of individual particles. The single or individual particle approach can overcome this problem by generating information that can be generally used for the evaluation of the breakage behaviour of particles under a given condition.Compaction is an economical and efficient processing method to transform loose powders into a dense compact. Density and mechanical strength are two main characteristics of the product and they change during the compaction process. The performance of compaction is affected by compaction condition and properties of particles, including compaction load, particle size, mixture, moisture and lubricant. Better understanding of these effects can help optimise the compaction process. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the breakage and compaction behaviour of iron ore particles under different conditions. The impact test will be performed to exan1ine the breakage of individual iron ore particles, and the die compaction and unconfined compression will be carried out to examine the density and mechanical strength of formed compacts.

▼ Architectural precast concrete (APC) cladding is a type of building façade composed by concrete panels separated from each other by joints and attached to the building structure with steel connections. Seismic damage to this component has been observed in past earthquakes, it is costly and time consuming to repair, and, importantly, it can be life threatening. APC cladding is unique among nonstructural components, since its heavy concrete panels span from floor to floor. As a result, this system is uniquely sensitive to both interstory drifts and floor accelerations. However, only few experimental or analytical programs have specifically focused on this type of façade. Since knowledge regarding the seismic behavior of APC façades is limited, design code prescriptions are relatively qualitative and do not accurately consider the many features of the system. The first part of this dissertation aims to provide guidance to practitioners to improve the drift-compatible design of APC cladding. Results are based on three experiments: one system level experiment in which sixteen panels were installed on a full-scale building and two component tests on tieback connections. The combination of the results from these tests provided information on the how to improve the detailing of tieback connections to create the optimal compromise between good seismic performance and constructability. In addition, this part of the dissertation includes a one-of-a-kind study of a new type of corner system allowing for smaller corner joints thanks to a ductile fuse. The second part of this dissertation presents an analysis of the accelerations developed in the APC cladding during seismic motions. This analysis is based on numerical models validated using data from the system level experiment. Initially, the dynamic characteristics of the APC cladding are analyzed using models of the panels and connections. Subsequently, the APC cladding is included in a building model, with the goal of determining the amplification of accelerations in the panels during service and design level motions. The study revealed issues in the way the panels are currently designed to resist seismic forces.

▼ In order to provide a valuable greener product using agricultural waste, polymer/ agricultural waste composites has been fabricated. Since, however, the incompatibility between the hydrophilic natural fiber and hydrophobic polymer matrices makes it difficult to disperse the individual fiber throughout polymer matrices, and the incorporation of agricultural waste into polymer matrices may compromise certain mechanical properties. In order to improve the
compatibility between natural fiber and polymer matrices, this thesis is studied and discussed the control of surface property using compatibilizer and vapor phase assisted surface polymerization for the high-performance polymer/ agricultural waste composites. This thesis is composed of up to Chapter 5 from Chapter 1. The background, scope and objectives of this study are described in the introduction Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, in order to investigate potential of agricultural natural fiber as filler, I focused on Erianthus arudinaceus as a cellulose resource crop because of high CO_2 fixation efficiency. Polymer composites of polypropylene (PP) with Erianthus fiber (ETF) were fabricated and they were evaluated by mechanical properties to reveal the
compatibility between PP and ETF. To overcome poor
compatibility between PP and ETF, Maleic anhydride-modified polypropylene (MAPP) was applied as a compatibilizer. Since ETF/PP/MAPP composites improved the mechanical properties, it is revealed that interfacial property control between matrices and natural fibers is critical. In Chapter 3, vapor-phase assisted surface polymerization (VASP) method was applied as an alternative approach to compatibilizer. The VASP is not only a surface coating method for fabrication of composites but it is also expected to be able to apply to a wide range of substrates. VASP is an excellent method for preserving the fine structures of delicate substrate surfaces such as biomaterials in comparison with liquid and melting processes. After the diffusion and adsorption on the substrate surfaces, the monomer can be polymerized.. VASP of MMA onto wheat straw fiber (WSF) was applied to modify the surface property and improve the
compatibility between PLLA and WSF. Bio-composites with biodegradable polymer (poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA)) and WSF was fabricated via VASP. Since the PLLA/VWSF (treated with VASP in WSF) composites improved in tensile strength (20-30%) compared with that of PLLA/WSF composites, VASP proved to improve the
compatibility between matrices and natural fibers. In Chapter 4, the gas-flow type of vapor-phase assisted surface polymerization (VASP-F) was successfully developed since the substrate surface could be polymerized through monomer mist produced by monomer bubbling. VASP-F can inherit advantages of VASP method due to polymer grafted on substrate, and can recover non-reactant monomer. Larger amounts of substrate can be modified by VASP-F compared to VASP. In conclusion, the improvement of
compatibility between natural fiber and polymer matrices are essential to produce the…

▼ The solubility parameters for ten fractions of
Athabasca vacuum residue were calculated from molecular
representations via group additivity methods. Two methods were
used; Marrero-Gani and Fedors. The calculated parameters were
compared between the fractions for consistency, and also compared
with other literature sources. The results from the Marrero-Gani
method were satisfactory in that the values were in the expected
range and the results were consistent from fraction to fraction.
The final stage of the work on group additivities was to estimate
the solubility parameter values at the extraction temperature of
473 K, and then compare the solutes to the solvents. The solubility
parameters of the solvents were calculated from correlations and
from the molecular dynamic simulation; the latter method did not
result in fulfilling values. The most reasonable solvent and solute
solubility parameters were used to assess the utility of the
solubility models to explain the trends. The solubility models were
not suitable for these types of materials. Stability of heavy oil
fractions undergoing mild thermal reactions were predicted
computationally for limited sample cracked molecules.

▼ Abstract
Design and manufacturing techniques of printed circuit boards
(PCB's) have advanced from early one or two-layer structures
to the multilayer boards where ten or more layers are no longer
uncommon. These give additional routing space, potential decrease
in device size and various design possibilities like solid ground
and power planes. Unfortunately multilayer boards are vulnerable
to high coupling between signal vias especially due to PCB resonances.
In this study via crosscoupling is investigated on multilayer
PCB's. Special attention is given to the coupling due
to resonances and vertically aligned blind vias. Problem is approached
from the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) point of view and
high accuracy of measurements or models is not the objective. Instead
ways to increase isolation are considered important. EMC is considered
to include internal functionality of the device.
Analytical methods are used to calculate resonant frequencies,
fields and quality factors for simple rectangular structures. The
PCB cavity is reduced to two-dimensions for numerical calculation
of same quantities. Aplac finite-difference time-domain simulator
is used to model coupling due to PCB resonances. Isolation between
vertically aligned blind vias is estimated analytically. A quasi-static
numerical model is used to study a coaxial via structure. Multilayer
test boards are constructed for measurement purposes. Simplified
resonator structures on two-layer boards are used to test different
methods to increase isolation.
Measurements show that high coupling between vias may occur
due to PCB resonances. This leads to the situation, where previously
used isolation methods between vias are not necessarily effective
enough. Several means to reduce effects of PCB resonances are described
in this study. Measured and modelled results agree well from an
EMC point of view. Coupling due to vertically aligned blind vias
is also shown to be high. A simple capacitance model may be used
to approximate this up to frequencies where the dynamic wave nature
of the board starts to be important. From a PCB designer's
point of view these results mean that when the board size is not
small compared to the wavelength, there is a possibility of resonances
and reduction methods have to be taken into account. Also placement
of the vias have to be carefully selected especially if blind or
buried vias are used.

▼ This dissertation consists of three essays about heterogeneous agents in the dynamic economy and how to deal with the asymmetric information arose by heterogeneity.
Firstly, I consider the optimal taxation issue in a dynamic endogenous growth model with considering human capital accumulation, and agents ability is heterogeneous and private information. Moreover, the agents with higher ability have positive external effects on others. By using the two-sector endogenous model, I show that it is optimal to impose different income and capital income taxes on people with different abilities. Specifically, positive marginal income tax is adopted for people with lower ability while no tax is imposed for people with higher ability; marginal capital income tax is zero whatever the agent’s is low or high. As for people using the capital and labor for human capital accumulation, the government should subsidize them whatever their ability is.
Secondly, I study the optimal monetary and fiscal policy with heterogeneous agents based on the search-theoretical environment where money is essential and consider the private information. I first solve the households’ problem in the centralized and decentralized market, and find out the optimal conditions. Then, in this section, I describe the problem that social planner faces by involving uncertainty and agents whose types are continuous. By comparing the optimal conditions in this generous setting, I show that the Friedman rule is no longer optimal when jointed with nonlinear taxation of income. Moreover, the capital income taxation is not zero.
Moreover, I constructs a general theoretical model to consider two kinds of financial frictions in the economy with financial intermediaries. By quantitative analysis the model with three separate shocks which are a negative collateral shock, a negative productivity shock and a positive shock to bankers’ divert rate, I find that a negative collateral shock which tightens firms’ financing constraints on investment can generate an equity price boom which is different from what is observed in recessions. Therefore, the collateral shock is not the main reason for the business cycle, while the negative productivity shock and bankers’ moral hazard problem are more important aspects to explain current economy.

▼ M.Ing. (Electrical And Electronic Engineering)
In this dissertation, an investigation into reducing Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) through design is presented. Root generation mechanisms of Electromagnetic Interference are often neglected during the design process and later treated symptomatically. Mitigation of Electromagnetic Interference at source often reduces cost and physical size of electronics. This dissertation demonstrates the process and results by which schematic balance mitigates EMI. In addition, the introduction of Geometric Balance and physically designing circuits to be Geometrically Symmetrical are presented and tested to determine whether the design produces mitigating EMI results. Multiple Printed Circuit Boards (PCB’s) were developed and tested against each other to demonstrate schematic balance and other EMI generation mechanisms. The final PCB was designed to be Geometrically Symmetrical and the test results compared. The results illustrate the varying performance of each PCB due to their differing design. The Geometrically Symmetrical PCB presented the best results due to various improvements which include physical layout size and semiconductor placement. An additional important phenomenon discovered was the amount of EMI generated during MOSFET Driver operation. This contributed to a significant amount of EMI during the no-load phase of testing.

▼ Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is associated with high
mortality rates and can be difficult and expensive to treat with
current drugs. The drugs used to treat IA are also associated with
undesirable, and often severe, side-effects of the patient. The
main causative agent of this disease is the opportunistic pathogen
Aspergillus fumigatus. This study identifies genes which play a
role in a fungal-specific type of programmed cell death (PCD) in A.
fumigatus, known as heterokaryon incompatibility. The development
of drugs specifically targeting the products of these genes could
lead to fewer side-effects than those arising from currently
available anti-fungal drugs. The drug amphotericin B is currently
used to treat IA and has been shown to induce an apoptotic-like
phenotype in A. fumigatus; however, the sterols targeted are
present in both fungal and mammalian cell membranes. HI is a
fungal-specific self/non-self recognition system that results in
rapid compartmentalisation and cell death of hyphal fusion sites if
the two fusing fungi are not genetically compatible. The HI system
could be exploited as a novel drug target against invasive fungal
pathogens through targeting a component of the molecular pathway to
induce cell death. In contrast to current drugs, novel drugs could
target HI components to induce PCD without affecting non-desirable
targets that cause side-effects. The non-self recognition systems
used by Neurospora crassa, Aspergillus Nidulans and Podospora
anserina are the well characterised, and they each differ
significantly in their modes of action. BLAST searches found 30
homologues of HI genes from other the systems of characterised
species in A. fumigatus, with 8 containing the fungal-specific het
domain. The first assay to determine whether disruption of het
genes could affect HI was to observe the barrage phenotype between
incompatible A. fumigatus individuals. However, there was no
barrage visible as the leading edge of colonies stopped growing
when in close proximity to another colony. Instead, nitrate
non-utilising (Nit) A. fumigatus mutant strains were generated
using chlorate and pair-wise crosses of 46 environmentally and
clinically isolates on nitrate-containing media resulted in the
formation of 16 viable heterokaryons. All of the heterokaryons fell
into exclusive
compatibility groups where no intergroup crossing
was possible.Homologous recombination was used to disrupt five of
the identified het domain genes with gene replacement cassettes,
generated through fusion-PCR, in an akuB(KU80Δ) A. fumigatus
strain. The mutant strains displayed both detrimental growth on
standard agar growth media and reduced ability to recognise
non-self strains. Full and partial heterokaryons were formed during
intergroup pair-wise
compatibility crosses using the mutants and
strains that the akuB(KU80Δ) parent strain was previously
incompatible with. This was followed with a non-bias approach of
gene disruption using the Fusarium oxysporum impala160 transposable
element in a Nit A. fumigatus mutant. Inducing…

▼ Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has shown a rapid increase in incidence over the past 25 years. Many clinical manifestations occur in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) due to compromised immunity caused by this virus. Dermatological disorders are almost inevitable for individuals suffering from HIV/AIDS and are seen in approximately 90% of all infected patients (Cedeno-Laurent et al., 2011:5; Dlova & Mosam, 2004:12). Vulnerability of the skin causes impaired life quality by causing low self-esteem, depression or even suicide. The skin is regarded as the most visible organ due to its location and large surface area (Cedeno-Laurent et al., 2011:5). Cutaneous manifestations, including viral, fungal and bacterial pathogens, can serve as markers in HIV/AIDS progression or as indicators for commencing HIV/AIDS treatment (Vusadevan et al., 2012:20).
Acyclovir is an anti-viral agent showing activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2, varicella-zoster virus and cytomegalovirus to a certain extent (King, 1988:176; Beers, 2006:1061). The anti-fungal agent, ketoconazole, shows activity against the majority of pathogenic fungal infections seen in HIV/AIDS including Candida spp, Cryptocococcus neoformans and Histoplasma capsulatum (Bennet, 2006:1225). Ketoconazole has shown to have in vitro inhibitory activity against certain Staphylococcus spp (Pottage, 1986:217). According to Bickers (1994:89), ketoconazole shows a synergistic anti-viral activity when used in combination with acyclovir.
Using the mucosal route of administration may be beneficial for these compounds due to the location of occurrence as many of these diseases are found on mucosal surfaces such as the labial and vaginal areas. Compounds are mainly delivered via passive diffusion across epithelium membranes (Patel et al., 2011:107). In mucosal skin, the principle barrier function is removed by the absence of the keratinised stratum corneum as found in normal skin and is, thus, more permeable (Farage & Scheffler, 2011:117).
In this study three different formulations containing acyclovir (5% w/w) and ketoconazole (2% w/w) were formulated for topical delivery on mucus membranes, which included a cream, gel and lip balm. Topical delivery is used to target specific sites on the skin by penetration of the skin layers, but has a minimal requirement for systemic effect (Dayan, 2005:67). The aim in this study was to formulate a stable product containing acyclovir and ketoconazole that would
provide an efficient flux of both compounds when applied on mucosal membranes. In vitro studies were performed to determine skin permeation of acyclovir and ketoconazole by using a flow-through diffusion system. The formulated products were compared to Acitop® and Ketazol®, which are two products available on the South African market, containing acyclovir and ketoconazole, respectively. However, no product is yet available containing both acyclovir and ketoconazole.

▼ Citizens of Sweden are now facing a large shift in their habits of managing money transferring using mobile phones. They are now forced to use an application called WyWallet when making purchases with cell-phones. WyWallet is an application based on a new EU-directive that has led to a law concerning the new payment service act that wants to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. This has led to a lot of consequences for the citizens and also other agencies relying on donations via text messages. This research has its focus on investigating how a mobile payment method in a modern society has failed in meeting their customers’ demands and requirements by having a customer focus. The material was collected through a focus group and subsequent in-depth interviews in order to reach an understanding of customer’s feelings, attitudes and expectations towards mobile payment methods. The findings show that several factors such as expectations, environmental issues, technological aspects, compatibility issues and convenience issues are not targeted in order to meet the requirement of customers and the current infrastructure of the society.

▼ The purpose of this research is to study systematically compatibility conditions and their implications for the microstructure of a phase-transforming material. The phase transformation in this thesis is restricted to crystalline solid-to-solid phase transformation. The conditions of compatibility refer to compatibility in the sense of the nonlinear elastic theory of martensite. Different versions of these conditions of compatibility are studied in this thesis, ranging from "weak compatibility'' (continuity along lines aligned with precipitates) to very strong conditions of compatibility as expressed by the "cofactor conditions''. In the case of a diffusionless, reversible martensitic phase transformation, the free energy of the undistorted body is described as the volume integral of the free energy density function, which depends on the temperature and deformation gradient of the continuous body. This free energy at continuum level describes the elastic and chemical energy stored in the lattice. Macroscopic deformations are related to lattice deformation by the Cauchy-Born rule. This rule yields a deformation gradient F relating a sublattice of the austenite phase to the primitive lattice of the martensite phase. We derive a heuristic algorithm to find F directly from X-ray diffraction measurement for both phases. For such a transformation both the lattice parameters and the symmetry of the crystal structure change. We assume that the free energy is invariant under rigid rotations and symmetry operations. The transformation stretch matrix U is calculated from the deformation gradient F by polar decomposition. The associated crystallographically equivalent variants U1, ..., Un are determined by symmetry arguments (We can choose U1 = U.). The matrices I (austenite) and U1, ..., Un (variants of martensite) determine the_para>energy wells of the free energy density. The formation of microstructure arises from the simultaneous requirements of energy minimization, i.e., being near the energy wells, and compatibility. The Widmanstatten type precipitation process produces a microstructure of elongated precipitates. For this microstructure we propose a weaker condition of compatibility than is used in the study of martensite. This weaker condition implies a rank-two connection between energy wells and predicts directions of elongation for the precipitates. This condition can be interpreted as a mathematical condition of semi-coherence. The transformation stretch matrix is calculated by the same algorithm mentioned above. The weak compatibility condition is equivalent to the statement that the smallest and largest eigenvalues of U satisfy &lambda1 &le 1 &le &lambda3, which in turn implies that there is an undistorted direction e. We study this condition in the…

▼ Joint actions, such as lifting and moving objects with a partner, are fundamental to human co-operation. In the present thesis, I sought to build upon a growing body of literature that investigates the role of spontaneous cognitive processes (i.e., processes that occur even when there is no joint action goal) in joint action. Specifically, I aimed to test whether the presence of a co-actor modulates our perception of affordances, or the set of actions that an object allows an observer. To this end, I adapted an object-based two-choice paradigm, in which participants make left/right responses to unilaterally graspable objects, for joint responding. Typically, response times (RTs) in such tasks are faster when the task-irrelevant handle orientation of the viewed objects is aligned with the responding hand. This object-based compatibility effect (CE) is often taken as evidence that viewed objects elicit motor activation consistent with their afforded grasp, even when there is no grasp intention. In Study 1, participants (N = 48) completed individual and joint versions of an object-based two-choice task. However, I failed to replicate the object-based CE in the standard (i.e. individual) two-choice task, instead finding a numerical negative CE (NCE). In Study 2 (Ns = 36), I conducted two experiments to test whether Study 1’s failure to replicate the CE could be due to pixel asymmetry (the proportion of pixels either side of fixation) modulating the object-based CE. I show that between-object (due to object shape) and within-object (due to object placement) variation in pixel asymmetry can attenuate, or even reverse, CEs. In light of finding that stimulus spatial properties modulated the object-based CE, I sought to determine whether the effect was indicative of affordance perception at all. In Study 3, I meta-analyzed the object-based CE to test whether it is better explained by spatial coding accounts, which propose that the effect is merely an example of a broader class of spatial CEs elicited by the unilaterally protruding handles of objects. Analysis of 88 independent effects (from 2359 participants) revealed a small, yet significant CE, as well as evidence of publication bias. Further, moderator analysis offered little support for affordance-based explanations of the object-based CE. Rather, results supported a spatial coding account. To test whether viewed objects can facilitate compatible responses at all, I asked participants in Study 4 to complete a novel Bimanual Affordance Task (BMAT), which sidesteps spatial confounds by featuring symmetrical stimuli. I observed the expected affordance x response compatibility effect, such that unimanual responses were faster to unimanually graspable objects, while bimanual responses were faster to bimanually graspable objects. In Studies 5-6, pairs of participants shared the BMAT: Overall, I found that co-action modulates affordance perception, such that it facilitates responses to bimanual (joint), but not unimanual (individual), grasp-affording objects. In all, results…

▼ Set-level and element-level
compatibility are two ways to differentiate between different components of stimulus-response
compatibility. Element-level
compatibility (the difference between incongruent and congruent mappings) has been shown in prior studies to be an increasing function of set-level
compatibility (differences between pairings of stimulus and response ensembles). When manual and vocal response sets are paired with spatial (physical location) stimuli and verbal (location-word stimuli), the difference between the incongruent and congruent mappings is larger for the spatial-manual and verbal-vocal conditions than for the alternative pairings of lower set-level
compatibility.
The common use of eye tracking technology in psychological experiments necessitates investigating the set-level
compatibility of the oculomotor system through use of various stimulus sets. Saccadic eye movements are known to yield element-level
compatibility effects (longer response times for antisaccades in the opposite direction of the stimulus than for prosaccades in the direction of the stimulus). Although the tendency to make a prosaccade is often described as highly automatic, no attempt has been made to evaluate the overall set-level
compatibility of eye-movement responses in comparison to vocal location-naming responses or manual responses. Consequently, I conducted two experiments in which eye-movement responses were compared to those two response modalities: vocal responses (Experiment 1) and keypress responses (Experiment 2). Visual stimuli were varied through use of onsets of squares in left and right spatial locations (spatial codes) or centrally presented words ‘left’ and ‘right’ (verbal codes). The relative set-level
compatibility of the two response sets was evaluated by comparing performance with a congruent mapping of spatial and verbal location stimuli; the element-level
compatibility effects were evaluated by comparing the differences in performance for incongruent and congruent mappings.
The results provide evidence of set-level
compatibility differences, with eye movements not only being more compatible than vocal responses with spatial stimuli than verbal stimuli, but also relatively more compatible than keypresses. This result pattern implies that eye movements are more extreme than keypress responses on the spatial end of a response spectrum, compared to vocal responses. Despite this difference in set-level
compatibility, in Experiment 1 the element-level mapping effect for sets with high set-level
compatibility (including eye-movement responses to spatial) was no larger than that for sets with low set-level
compatibility (including eye-movement responses to verbal stimuli). A positive relation between relative set-level
compatibility and the element-level mapping effect was found in Experiment 2 when eye movements were compared to keypresses, but this was due mainly to the keypress responses. That incompatible, antisaccade eye-movement responses are not slowed by higher set-level
compatibility…

▼ One critical finding from the literature on embodied cognition is that people produce actions more efficiently when observing similar as compared to when observing different actions. This imitative
compatibility effect has been typically studied with simple actions that have minimal ecological validity. The present dissertation presents five experiments that investigate how these
compatibility effects are altered when participants produce actions with a familiar object (key pad), but view objectless actions made by an onscreen model hand. The mismatch in object directedness between observed and produced actions was adopted (1) to investigate whether
compatibility effects are even possible when there is such a mismatch and, if possible, (2) to investigate how objects influence
compatibility effects.
The experiments here demonstrate that it is possible to obtain a
compatibility effect under the mismatch conditions and reveal a
compatibility specificity effect, in which flexions motions (curling of the fingers typical of a key press action) generate
compatibility effects, but extension motions (straightening of the finger away from the palm) do not. Five experiments narrow the various components of participant motions for which
compatibility effects may be specific and isolate particular kinematic patterns (i.e. extensions versus flexions) as a plausible cause for the observed specificity. These results broaden our understanding of
compatibility effects and about links between action perception and production more generally. Furthermore, these results demonstrate that studies of human action can benefit from expanding their investigations beyond the connections between movement processing involved in action perception and production into how the relevant representations of action are situated within the action-environment interface. Finally, these findings may have important connections to other findings in the embodied cognition literature suggesting that perceiving a familiar object facilitates producing motions that are typical for using the object.

▼ Changes in big companies resulting in new organizational structures and cost cutting are pushing more and more of the knowledge and information handling to sub-units in a multi-national structure. For big knowledge-intensive companies that act in the global market place, internal information handling is becoming a challenge. The study and reflections are based on experiences from Ericsson, a knowledge-intensive global telecommunication company. This company delivers complex cross-functional products (solutions) and has a decentralized organization. It faces the cost of managing distributed product information and the challenge to gather relevant information in the sales departments. One can easily characterize the company’s complex and unique product offerings as having multiple dependencies. The solutions are composed by building blocks, i.e. different sub products, delivered by different product units. The different sub products suffer from limitations in how they can be combined into solutions. This study addresses the information gaps in a decentralized organization regarding this specific issue. It focuses on identifying vital information without driving cost and requiring organizational changes. Stakeholder identification was done from a value chain perspective. The type of information that would give the most profitable solutions was identified during group sessions and individual interviews. An asymmetric compatibility matrix (ACM) was developed to fit the purpose of keeping low maintenance cost and without requiring organizational changes. The ACM was applied and process maturity improvements were evaluated with the use of the Process Enterprise and Maturity Model. The Ericsson specific study shows that the use of an ACM for product compatibility information makes it possible to define information responsibility that is sustainable over time. Thereby the maintenance cost for this information can be brought down to a minimum. Furthermore, the study shows that the effort of gathering information for the sales organizations to provide customer solutions can be reduced by the use of an ACM offering generic compatibility information. Users of the ACM would be able to re-use its information and focus on customer specific sales and deployment issues rather than re-do what others already have done. Cost of sales as well as business risks would thereby likely decrease, affecting the bottom line positively. Furthermore new business opportunities are assumed to be addressed better since relevant generic information is made available up front. Other positive expected benefits are prevention of network malfunctions and increased customer satisfaction. From this study it can be concluded that an ACM can be a powerful tool for gathering cross-functional product information in large decentralized organizations at a low cost, without any organizational changes, and with a high process maturity. Further research would be needed if one would consider validating the general applicability of the ACM in other processes.

The limitations resulting from the advancement of integration technologies, such as the increasing power density, leading to the need to reduce the operating frequency of the circuits added to the need to reduce energy consumption, whether for environmental reasons or to better serve mobile devices, bring the need for greater intervention and hardware customization to the demands of the software. To varying degrees these interventions can be applied where the granularity can range from processing elements being completely disabled until processors having only functional units being disabled, reset cache memories in size and associativity, etc. However, the reconfiguration of hardware should reach all stages of these systems so that you can achieve satisfactory reduction in power and energy consumption. In addition to the accelerated integration of processing elements on a single integrated circuit, the increasing concentration of heterogeneous tasks in a same device, also leads to the…

▼ With the rapid and constant changes taking place in information technology and internet, only firms participating in the creation and utilization of knowledge can hope to obtain the advantageous
position in todayâs knowledge-based economy. Thus, the issues surrounding knowledge management (KM) have attracted more and more concern from both industry and academia. To add value with KM, we need KMS, which involve the application of IT systems and other organizational resources to manage knowledge strategically, are a relatively recent phenomenon.
The goal of this research is to find the significant factors that link with KMS use and individual performance by using diamond model and contingency theory, which emphasizes the
importance of fit. We combine with three distinct factors of
compatibility, including (1) Technology
- Task
Compatibility (2) Technology - People
Compatibility (3) Technology - Organization
Compatibility, to mold an integrated model.
An empirical survey methodology is applied to test the research model and seven hypotheses are developed in this study, and then we use PLS to analyze it. The results reveal that Technology-Task
compatibility contributes most to the use of KMS. It implies that KMS should fulfill the task needs of users, and therefore, people will use more functions of the KM systems
frequently. Besides, Technology-People
compatibility has similar effect on the use of KMS. This suggests that it will enhance the usage if the KMS is more compatible with usersâ past experience and value. We also found that Technology - Organization
compatibility has least impact on usage, but it still needed to take into consideration and worthy to discuss in the future research.
In sum, unlike much prior research that has focused on only a limited aspect of
compatibility, we provide a more comprehensive conceptual definition that disaggregates the content of
compatibility into three distinct and separable constructs and the findings of this study provides some suggestions for the KMS research.

▼ Because of the fast development of mobile computing in recent years, this study attempt to research the acceptance of mobile computing for employees on business. Different from the past studies based on people-determined and system-determined to verify technology acceptance, we base on interaction theory viewpoint and diamond model to create four technology compatibilities. We treat these four compatibilities as external variables of technology acceptance model (TAM), and hypothesize each of the
compatibility influencing perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. According to the analysis result of this study, we focus on these hypotheses to discuss. Final, we also discuss the implications for theory and practice and point out the importance of technology
