▼ This dissertation presents an Hegelian reconsideration of the communitarian critique of liberalism. It is motivated by two related concerns. The first is a concern about the ideal of individualism, which seems to be an ideal that is of importance to many Americans, and the variety of liberalism that appeals to this ideal, which, I argue, finds one of its best representatives in John Rawls’ liberalism as it is developed in his A Theory of Justice. For this ideal and this variety of liberalism would seem to have the potential to give rise to unhappy social consequences—in particular, the inability of many in our age to experience their lives as meaningful. The second is a concern about even the most promising contemporary attempts to confront the ideal of individualism and the variety of liberalism that appeals to this ideal in their potential to give rise to unhappy social consequences, which, I argue, find one of their best representatives in the communitarian critique of liberalism in general and in Charles Taylor’s critique as it is developed in his The Ethics of Authenticity in specific. For even these attempts would seem not to propose solutions that could prevent these consequences from arising—in particular, the inability of many in our age to experience their lives as meaningful. Now, if Taylor’s critique is problematic in this way, I suggest that it might be because his critique has strayed from its philosophical roots in G.W.F. Hegel’s thought—in particular, Hegel’s method of immanent critique and concept of recognition as they are developed in his Phenomenology of Spirit. Thus, in the first half of the present work, I attempt to thematize the first concern through a reconsideration especially of Taylor’s critique as it is developed in The Ethics of Authenticity and especially in relation to Rawls’ liberalism as it is developed in A Theory of Justice (although Michael Sandel’s critique as it is developed in Liberalism and the Limits of Justice, Rawls’ liberalism as it is developed in Political Liberalism, and Will Kymlicka’s liberalism as it is developed in Liberalism, Community, and Culture are also discussed at length). And, in the second half of the present work, I attempt to thematize the second concern through a reconsideration of Taylor’s critique as it is developed in The Ethics of Authenticity with reference to Hegel’s thought as it is developed in his Phenomenology of Spirit. Ultimately, I suggest that Taylor’s critique might be able to propose solutions that could prevent what he calls “a loss of meaning” from arising if his method of critique and concept of recognition were more strictly Hegelian and I suggest what one such solution might be.

▼ Over the past quarter of a century social capital has grown from a relatively obscure concept to one routinely applied in a variety of literatures ranging from academic disciplines to international development programmes. Whilst the concept has been the
subject of several critiques, these have largely been from a political economic perspective and have primarily discredited the concept by constructing it as having a basis and origins in economics. This thesis aims to offer an alternative analysis of social capital. By drawing on the work of French pragmatism, I treat social capital as a complex, heterogeneous object whose meaning and basis shifts as it has been employed in the enactment of different realities.
Whilst retaining this sensibility, I argue that insight can be gained into political uses of social capital by conceptualising it as part of various corrective critiques of economic liberalism. From a communitarian perspective, liberal policy is deficient because of its individualistic, and economic, foci. The incorporation of these, and other critiques, has resulted in the recent emergence of a ‘holistic’ approach that identifies human ‘wellbeing’ as the goal of policy. Social capital, with its promise to make the benefits of social life measurable and calculable, has helped to incorporate the communitarian critique into policy and political discourse both in New Zealand and internationally. However, social capital’s relationship to critique within policy and politics has varied. Some authors have constructed it as existing in a reciprocal relationship with existing liberal economic policies, from this perspective both economic growth and social capital are required to improve human wellbeing. For others, however, social capital and wellbeing are damaged by economic growth, and so economic policy requires modification in order to prevent damage to social capital. When the former construction is used, social capital is part of an expansionary critique of policy. From the latter perspective, social capital forms part of a reformist critique of policy.
These arguments are built on an analysis of social capital in texts from a variety of political and scholarly fields. My exploration of social capital in two academic fields, public health and management studies demonstrates that social capital often lacks an evident economic basis, and highlights the variability in the concept’s construction. I also explore the history of the concept in New Zealand political and policy texts, discussing its use in the New Zealand Institute of Policy Studies and by Prime Minister Jim Bolger in the 1990s, and how this changed as the concept was more thoroughly incorporated into policy during the Fifth Labour Government in the early 2000s. Furthermore, I offer an explanation of social capital’s current and central role in national accounting frameworks published by international and national government organisations, which provide the most clearly articulated attempts to measure social life via social capital.
As well as building…

▼ It has become commonplace to argue that the liberal-communitarian debate, which has characterised Anglo-American political thought for the last two decades, has now been exhausted. However, there is little consensus over who actually had the better of the debate or alternatively, how, and even whether, it is possible to synthesise some of the key insights of the two conflicting schools of thought. In this thesis, it will be argued that this can partly be explained by the fact that the debate was largely misconceived in the first place. This is due firstly to the fact that the ideological differences within the two camps are so vast as to render the terms virtually meaningless as binary categories. Secondly, some of the key protagonists on both sides of the debate actually display some of the same faults. This will be shown by juxtaposing Rawls’s political liberalism with Sandel’s civic republicanism. While these two projects are usually regarded as antithetical, it will be shown that both enterprises are similarly flawed due to their mistaken assumption that it is possible to transcend the foundationalism / anti- foundationalism dichotomy by legitimising normative political theory with reference to perceived historically shared understandings alone rather than metaphysical foundations. The thesis will then consider Habermas’s communicative ethics, which offers a different account of how to redeem normative political theory without presupposing metaphysics. It will be argued that, while Habermas is correct to resist the post-modernist critique which rejects the possibility of universalist conceptions of morality per se, he fails to assuage the criticisms of a diverse array of liberal sceptics who dispute the possibility of dispensing with metaphysical foundations altogether. The thesis will conclude that Rawls’s, Habermas’s and Sandel’s normative projects are all weakened by their underestimation of the level of ideological competition, which all strands of the liberal tradition confront in the public sphere.

▼ Since the days of Empire, Britain has employed familial discourse, often with negative connotations, to describe her relationship with her colonies. In the nineteenth century the idea, put forward by the British, that the Empire was a family blurred the lines between the domestic and the international arenas. This practice of familial discourse continues today, albeit in something of a different form, as Britain and the fifty-two states, which make up membership of the intergovernmental organisation known as the Commonwealth, frequently refer to themselves as a family of nations. From the vantage point of the twenty-first century, the Commonwealth and its familial rhetoric might seem outdated, even anachronistic; yet, the notion of the Commonwealth as a 'family' continues to endure and is used liberally by the Head of the Commonwealth (the Queen), the Commonwealth Secretary General, and Commonwealth Heads of Government during their biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings. When a group of post-colonial states and their former coloniser continue to refer to themselves as family, what is the significance of this label? Is it simply a way for smaller, less powerful states to cement ties with richer, more powerful ones? Perhaps, a way for former colonial powers to hold on to some semblance of power? Or is there some kind of legitimacy behind this rhetoric, that positions the Commonwealth, in the eyes of its member states, as analogous to an actual family? These questions form the puzzle at the heart of this thesis. In attempting to answer these questions, the thesis combines historical and theoretical analysis with empirical evidence to consider African understandings of the Commonwealth in order to question whether a familial metaphor, employed in the nineteenth century to bring the idea of the wider Empire home to the British, is anything more than an empty signifier for post-colonial Commonwealth states today.

▼ This paper argues that the liberal-communitarian debate in political philosophy is still significant today. While some have argued that communitarian concerns have been absorbed by liberal approaches to the accommodation of moral and cultural diversity, I show that such efforts are not properly sensitive to and respectful of other cultures because they do not acknowledge the particularity of the liberal tradition. To emphasize this, I draw on the intellectual resources of a particular communitarian tradition – Confucianism – to develop a more sensitive and respectful accommodation of cultural diversity called Confucian multiculturalism. I show that Confucian multiculturalism can be realized through an intercultural dialogue that, in the modern context, should take place in universities which can provide the right intercultural education and environment. I conclude that the liberal-communitarian debate, when taken seriously, can be expanded to take the form of an intercultural dialogue that enriches all cultures and probes our common humanity.

▼ This thesis assesses whether communitarian critique can still inform contemporary liberal political theory. The suggestion is that although liberalism has correctly rejected calls for a politics of 'community', it has ignored one important aspect of that critique, namely emphasis on the social embeddedness of the individual. Investigation of this hypothesis proceeds in two stages. The first involves reconsideration of the liberal-communitarian debate in the light of Charles Taylor's distinction between ontological and normative issues. This reveals how the arguments for social embeddedness (or ontological holism) fit in with more traditional appeals to community. Further analysis of the idea of ontological holism emphasises the potentially philosophical or empirical character of holist claims. The second stage of the argument ascertains whether liberal theory should heed communitarianism's recommendation of a more holist approach. Analysis of liberal texts reveals that liberal theorists already do adopt such an approach, however they do so in a piecemeal fashion, and generally without reference to supporting empirical evidence. Given the assumption that liberal theory is not expressly Utopian, some attention to limiting empirical factors would seem to be required. To back up this claim a case-study of liberal tolerance is undertaken, comparing the theoretical and social psychological accounts of inter-group toleration and its development. This comparison reveals that liberal tolerance is too narrow in scope, failing to absorb some of the most virulent forms of inter-group antagonism (such as gender- or race-based antipathy). Further, social psychological study shows that socially intolerant attitudes may be at least as harmful as, political ones, as they undermine the development of self-respect. Overall, important conclusions are reached as to the theoretical changes required of liberalism if it is to adopt a more thoroughly holist approach. Attention to the operation of factors at the localised rather than national level is vital, as is attention to empirical detail. Thus the 'politics of locality' complements traditional focus on the nation-state.

▼ Africa's tragedy has at different times been subjected to various paradigm shifts ranging from modernisation to neo-Marxist theories with each paradigm identifying different sources of the tragedy. The tragedy, to some scholars, is rooted to the crisis of development. But to some African scholars, a key aspect to the crisis remains the question of 'which and whose democracy?' The central issue for investigation in this thesis is the efficacy of 'best-practice' political and economic templates prescribed by both liberals and socialists for Africa. These templates appear to be producing hybridised political order that breeds crises of political instability, leadership, economic hardship, violent conflicts etc; with no visible solution in sight. There is therefore a need for the reconstruction of Africa's development strategy with unique models based on a foundation of 'best fit' values nurtured by the indigenous grains of the African societies. The thesis adopts critical theory using textual and contextual analysis as its methodology to engage literature on liberal, popular, social, and socialist democracy. It also engages the Africanist and African debate on democracy to discuss what works contextually in Africa and what does not work. The thesis sets out to establish how neo-communitarianism and speconomy can collectively serve as models for development in the sub-Saharan Africa, that is currently mediated by the alienating role of an incoherent public sphere dominated by representations of foreign ideologies which do not seek to create a common consciousness in all citizens but rather to help maintain and perpetuate a fractured image of the Enlightenment.

▼ Abstract
Hsu Fu-Kuan asserts the importance of democracy, liberty and tradition, like other Contemporary Neo-Confucianism. By rethinking the classic articles of Confucianism, he asserted that there are similarities between Confucianism and Liberalism, and the sources of Confucianism only could be achieved the liberal goal by democratic system. What makes Hsu so prominent is his thought that âMoral Innerismâ and âMoral Practicesâ constructed the Confucianism: âMoral Innerismâ of the goodness in human natureâ always made people reminiscent of Kant, and this thesis is trying to explain that due to the second part, âMoral Practicesâ in the surrounding environment and social network, which reflected Hsu Fu-Kuanâs political thought with a prominet Communitarian Characteristic, that is why I labeled it as âCommunitarian Liberalismâ.

The implementation of a part of the Ecomuseu do Barroso in Fafião aims to maintain and expand the economic context of this village, with the preservation of competitive and multifunctional activities, the diversification of the local economy and the…

▼ This dissertation provides an account of the historical development of the political thought of Michael Walzer from the 1950s to the present day. It situates Walzer within an American tradition of social democratic thought and argues that only when he is so situated can his thought be understood fully. Walzer's engagement with that tradition, most notably through his work on Dissent magazine, has structured how he has responded to many of the major developments in political life over the course of his career, including the decline of movement politics, the rise of neoliberalism, the recent waves of immigration to the USA, and the increased salience of civil society following the demise of the Soviet Union.Understanding Walzer in this way recovers the egalitarian aspirations of his theory, which are lost in those academic accounts that are inspired by analytic philosophy. Particularly in the analysis of liberal political theorists, Walzer's commitment to interpreting the shared understandings of the communities of which he is a part is seen as sitting uncomfortably with his social democracy. The dissertation argues that when Walzer's conception of equality is taken seriously, the path of interpretation is closely allied to it. If we wish to instantiate equality in political practice, rather than refining the philosophical concept ever more closely, we have no choice but to take seriously the interests, desires, and passions of citizens and of citizen-activists. That is why his conception of equality, which is more sociologically robust than the dominant liberal alternative, has more chance of being appropriated by radical movements. In the dissertation, consideration is also given to Walzer's just war theory, to the impact of his Judaism on his thought, and to the relationship between these things and his continued adherence to a version of democratic socialism.

▼ AbstractExpanding Merit Through Communitarianism: Racial and Ethnic Implications by Jerlena Denise Griffin Doctor of Philosophy in Education University of California, Berkeley Professor David Stern, ChairLow-income students and some racial minorities, in particular African Americans, have been chronically under-represented in higher education. In the ongoing debate about affirmative action, conceptions of merit based on test scores and grades have been viewed as conflicting with the goal of more equitable representation. However, some previous researchers have proposed that a broader conception of merit, based on the mission of the higher educational institution, could be more consistent with equity goals. In particular, the public-serving mission of a public university would warrant greater emphasis on community service achievements in selecting among applicants. In the University of California (UC) system, high school community service already is one of the qualifications considered in the comprehensive review of freshman applications. This study explores the possible implications of giving greater consideration to high school community service in the admission process. Data from UC applications for fall2013 are used to compare the average amount of time spent in high school volunteeractivities among applicants, admitted students, and enrolled freshman by race/ethnicity, gender, and other characteristics. Among other findings, African American and Asian students reported the highest average hours of community service in high school. Increasing consideration of high school community service would result in admitting slightly larger numbers of students in these groups.Data on community service from the spring 2014 UC Undergraduate Experience Survey also were used to compare the amount of hours per week spent in community service by students in their freshman year. Among other findings, high school service was a strong predictor of college service, and African American students were the most likely to participate in community service as freshmen. A regression in which high school community service and student characteristics were used to predict hours of community service in college revealed that African American freshmen actually contributed more hours of community service than would have been predicted by their high school service and other characteristics.

▼ This study examines the extent to which African communitarian thought succeeds in the promotion
of human dignity without having to call upon human rights. As well as being considered as a
central value within social and political philosophy, human dignity is also critical to policy
formulations within spheres is has tremendous influence such as bioethics, medicine, politics, and
law. Generally, the promotion of human dignity has been conceived from the liberal point of view,
and specifically through human rights and their institutions. Ontologically, liberalism prioritises
the individual and her rights over her community. Respect for one’s dignity is in this regard
synonymous with respect for individual rights. This conception excludes the non-liberal thought
systems which are regarded as inimical to the human dignity project on the basis that they do not
prioritise individual rights and freedoms. On this basis, the non-liberal thought systems have been
perceived as anachronistic and authoritarian, and therefore considered as dissing human dignity.
However, since human dignity is generally regarded as a concept more fundamental than human
rights, it cannot be reduced to a single value system at the exclusion of others. Thus, through
human rights, liberalism presents a particular vision of individual-community relationships in
which the individual is primary. Subsequently, this relationship points to a particular way of
understanding human dignity. As different societies live by different value systems, there exist
corresponding ways through which such societies express and enhance human dignity. It is in this
regard that the study attempts to demonstrate the extent to which African
communitarianism, one
of the non-liberal intellectual traditions and considered as a dominant conceptual theme in African
thought, is capable of securing human dignity. Specifically, the study examines certain values that
are central to the African communitarian thought system for their consistency with the dignity of
human persons in its broader sense. Within African
communitarianism, the individual-community
relationship prioritises the reality of the community over and above that of the individual. This can
be seen by emphasis laid on such values as interdependence, consensus and the common good.
Normatively, they all point to the centrality of the community and one’s duty towards its
flourishing. Thus, the sort of dignity that can be derived from the African communitarian thought
goes beyond the bounds of individual persons exercising their freedom as emphasised within the
liberal tradition. Dignity in this regard concerns the flourishing of persons not as individuals, but
as members of the community. Thus, contrary to the criticism by proponents of the liberal value
systems, the non-liberal thought systems can be shown to be capable of securing human dignity to
the extent that dignity is conceived from a holistic point of view. Since the basic aim of every
community is to serve people who are its…

In pedagogic research, it is common for the articulation between philosophy and education to happen from broad conceptual assumptions, which is usually called ideal of education. In this sense, other areas should be given the responsibility of investigating subjects related to school education, such as curriculum or evaluation. This Thesis aims at putting into question that assumption, dealing with the idea of a philosophy arising from school, a connected philosophy. For this, the communitarian philosophy of Michael Walzer is used as a theoretical support. Communitarianism, as a political philosophy, opposes to philosophical liberalism, as it sets that good life should be put into perspective in every specific context, and from one’s everyday practice. However, communitarian philosophy does not have a unified doctrinal body, for attaining the aims of this text (an articulation between the school and philosophy) Walzer’s work was used along with his several concepts to support the idea of a good school based on democratic citizenship, participation and protagonism of children and teenagers. Walzer’s communitarianism is advocated as having as its paradigm the concept of practical philosophy, and in this sense all other subjects explored by…

▼ In this dissertation I sketch a conception of personhood as understood from within an Afrocommunitarian worldview, and argue that this understanding of personhood has implications for understanding the concept of reconciliation. Understanding ‘being human’ as a collective, communal enterprise has implications for how responsibility, justice, forgiveness and humanization (all cognate concepts of reconciliation) are conceptualized. In line with this understanding of reconciliation and its cognate concepts, I argue that the humanization of self and other (according to the Afrocommunitarian understanding of personhood) is required for addressing the ‘inferiority’ and concurrent ‘superiority’ racial complexes as diagnosed by Franz Fanon and Steve Biko. These complexes reach deeply within individual and collective psyches and political identities, and I argue that political solutions to protracted conflict (in South Africa and other racially charged contexts) which do not address these deeply entrenched pathologies will be inadequate according to an Afrocommunitarian framework.

▼ The notion of citizenship, while a basic human right, has come under scrutiny. It
was once assumed a liberal inspired regime of citizenship rights would reign as the
primary ideological perspective in the Western world, however this has not been the
case. Numerous competing paradigms have questioned the premise upon which liberal
guarantees of citizenship rights are based. In particular, communitarianism has subjected
liberal rights discourse to a closer examination. Communitarian theory holds that
universalist principles negate any articulation of community and its internal diversity,
such as cultural citizenship. It is this understanding of citizenship that has taken hold in
Canada.
The Canadian political experience illustrates a number of attributes associated
with communitarian thought. It is a collectivist society that articulates a notion of the
common good, acknowledges the internal diversity of its citizens and possesses a highly
developed deliberative democratic process. To this end, Canada can be described as
being more communitarian than liberal in nature in the process it has adopted to address
citizenship rights. However, the type of commuIiitarianism displayed in Canada differs
from the political models examined by such scholars as Michael Sandel, Iris Marion
Young or Will Kymlicka.
Cultural citizenship rights are fluid and malleable in Canada. While no clear
guarantees of citizenship rights exist, there is a common commitment by Canadians to
engage in a fair, open and inclusive deliberative process. This model is unique to
Canada; it cannot be exported in that it is a product of Canadian political culture. As a
result, the contemporary demands of cultural citizenship are dealt with effectively and
democratically in Canada in that the proper mechanisms for public deliberation exist.

▼ This research explores feelings of obligation to volunteer, which lie at the interface of volunteering as simultaneously individual and collective and challenge traditional understandings of volunteering as leisure. The study examined volunteering within the context of communitarianism, particularly how collective outcomes of volunteering are related to feelings of obligation to volunteer. Phase one of this research focused on scale creation of a measure assessing feelings of obligation in the context of volunteerism. Using exploratory factor analyses of data from a student sample, this first phase yielded two measures: an 18-item Obligation to Volunteer as Commitment measure (OVC), encompassing dimensions of reward, affective attachment, flexibility, and side bets; and a 14-item Obligation to Volunteer as Duty measure (OVD), encompassing the dimensions of expectation, burden, and constraint. In phase two, survey research was conducted with 300 volunteers at ten community organizations. These new measures were used to examine relationships between obligation to volunteer and the value orientations of individualism and collectivism, the experience of volunteering as serious leisure, and the community characteristics of sense of community and social cohesion. Both individualism and collectivism were associated with the commitment but not the duty dimension of feelings of obligation, and both value orientations, but particularly individualism, was linked to serious leisure. Serious leisure very closely aligned with the commitment aspect of obligation as well as sense of community and social cohesion, thus emerging as a possible pathway for nurturing sense of community in a culture of individualism. Correlation and hierarchical regression analyses link the commitment aspect of obligation to sense of community and social cohesion. Feelings of duty to volunteer, in contrast, were inversely related to sense of community. Thus, the nature of feelings of obligation related to volunteering as commitment or duty have significant implications for the collective outcomes of volunteering, particularly sense of community. Also notable are the strong theoretical and empirical relationships between the OVC scale and serious leisure, which suggest that the newly-developed commitment scale could be considered a measure of the agreeable obligation that accompanies serious leisure pursuits.

The implementation of the Peacekeeping Police Units (UPPs) in some slums in the city of Rio de Janeiro has somehow impacted their daily routine. In the present work, a primary analysis of how communitarianism has taken shape in Mangueira since the installation of the Upp is displayed. From that moment on, the politics as well as the community associations have gotten closer to the police forces, which represent the very face of violence and abuse of power to the people living in the slums. ▼ This thesis offers a critique of neoliberal transformation in South Africa, which process results in growing social inequality and political apathy among citizens. Many scholars have made political-economic and historical analyses of the neoliberal transition, emphasizing structural changes at work at a ‘macro’ level. However, little attention has been paid to changes that have taken place in South Africa at the ‘micro’ level – changes to individual subjectivity and gender codes. That said, the thesis opens by summarizing the above mentioned political-economic accounts of neoliberalism in South Africa, because such works are indispensable to understanding how the regime is embedded within and buttressed by major global institutions. Yet, to achieve a holistic grasp of ‘neoliberal South Africa,’ more is needed. A sociological investigation into the impact of neoliberalism on ordinary people’s self-identification uncovers deep cultural reasons for the continued perpetuation of this unjust political-economic system. Only if it can be understood why people comply with the system in the face of suffering, can effective counter-measures be proposed and implemented over time. This thesis is inherently transdisciplinary. The approach rejects the privileging of one discipline over others, and likewise cautions against collapsing or dissolving disciplines into one another. Instead, recognizing the valuable contribution that each discipline can make to critical scrutiny of a particular issue, a form of methodological transversalism is used to bring different disciplines into dialogue with one another. Following this interplay of structural and subjective analysis, the thesis uncovers the role that consumerism plays in the political neutralization of South Africans. Consumer culture, tied as it is to profitable accumulation, instigates the neoliberal ‘values’ of economistic calculation, competition, and social atomization. This ethos is inculcated in individuals, both at work and during leisure hours. Moreover, consumerism derives much of its power from its ‘sexual sell,’ the creation of fashionable and ‘exemplary’ models of masculinity and femininity. In South Africa, these hegemonic gender models serve to instill competitive individualism while derogating indigenous values. The thesis proposes that in order to counter neoliberal hegemony in South Africa, and begin reclaiming the cultural autonomy of its peoples, it is important to invigorate indigenous communitarian practices and norms. The original contribution of this thesis consists in placing the African ethos of ubuntu in transversal dialogue with global ecological feminist voices. Both political perspectives reinforce a liberatory alternative vision for a future based on principles of embodied relationality, care giving and protection of community.

This study is an attempt to use TAYLORs and WALZERs communitarian theory to redefine the concept of citizenship, through the possibility of acceptable procedures and moral limits which may contribute for the inclusion of a politics of recognition as a propositional element in public policies, concerning disadvantaged social and cultural groups in the processes of distribution and accessibility of goods in the public space. The study was developed based on bibliographic research on the works of the two authors, trying to pinpoint: I what communitarian assumptions can be found in TAYLOR and WALZER; II what the main categories and concepts of the two authors are, as well as the possibilities of convergence and divergence between them; III what the moral limits and the acceptable procedures are, as well as the relation between those and the politics of recognition. In order to discuss the politics of recognition, authors such as HABERMAS, FRASER, HONNETH, SORIANO DIAZ, and THIEBAUT were used, among others. The methodology adopted was bibliographic research, aiming at identifying the creation (or not) of a convincing confrontational discourse toward instrumental reason and scientificism, proposed by the principle of universalistic equality, concerning the recognition of subjects. The analysis has examined, in the discourses of Charles Taylor and Michael Walzer, the concepts, resources and opportunities based on which different fields of analysis are built for social policies, i.e., the introduction of difference as a…

Charles Taylor is one of the most important and influential contemporary philosophers. In the political field, the liberal-communitarian debate is the theme where his contributions are most recognized. Nevertheless, the study of Taylors political thought has been limited. In the liberal-communitarian theorical debate arena, his so called 6 communitarian criticism has many times been taken as an advocacy answer to possible mistakes or limitations of liberalisms moral ideals. The most common conclusion is that the taylorian thought opposes itself to the liberal tradition and it has been identified with communitarianism theories, republicanism, or even with multiculturalism. Taylors reflection, however, is concerned with another more ample aim: the development of identity and good conceptions based in ontological arguments. The purpose of his work is not to question liberalistic moral ideals, but to reconfigure those in a specific ontological background, as well as to amplify the set of allowable moral and political relevant conceptions of goods to contemporary society. The intent of this…

Joms

principus. Be to, nė viena bendruomenė nėra vertesnė už kitą, tad
Viena
vertus, jie supaprastina liberaliąją individo sampratą, o antra
vertus, liberalai be jokių keblumų gali priimti daugelį dalykų,

Communitarianism emerged as a critique to
liberalism. Communitarians are aiming to show that communitarianism
is an alternative political theory which could successfully compete
with other political theories. However, it is maintained that
liberalism and communitarianism are not separate theories and they
only disagree over the proper role of power. Thesis claims that the
communitarian concept of power is liberal and, therefore,
communitarianism is not a distinct political theory, but a liberal
one. Communitarianism denies a liberal claim that it is possible to
agree about the principles of justice. Moreover, communitarians
maintain that a liberal concept of free individual is a false view.
They emphasize the significance of the community in the life of an
individual, because it helps one to become a real human being. On
the other hand, if there are only communal values and we cannot
commensurate them, because there are no universal principles then
everything is possible. Thus it is impossible to criticize or
condemn other communal practices. That is why communitarians claim
that there are some non-communal principles, like “parity of
participation” and “everyone has an equal rights”. They emphasize
that no community can be more superior than other, so power has to
be neutral. Communitarian critique of liberalism is not
irresistible. Firstly, it simplifies the liberal concept of an
individual. Secondly, liberals agree with some of the
communitarians proposals, like the role... [to full

▼ The question of whether the concept of a rule-follower presupposes more than a single individual came into prominence in the wake of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s considerations on rule-following, found primarily in his Philosophical Investigations (1953). Since then, a debate on the substantive side of the question (in addition to an exegetical one) has been waged between three sides, namely individualists, communitarians, and quietists. Briefly, individualists claim that the concept of a rule-follower does not presuppose more than one individual, while communitarians contend that it does so presuppose, and finally quietists argue that there is no determinate answer to the question.
This thesis is an attempt to work towards resolving the debate on the substantive question by examining the arguments proposed by these three sides and deciding which of them is the most tenable. The individualist arguments I contend with include those from A. J. Ayer, G. P. Baker and P. M. S. Hacker, Simon Blackburn, John Canfield, Grant Gillett, and Jussi Haukioja. The communitarian arguments evaluated here include those from Donald Davidson, Norman Malcolm, John McDowell, Rush Rhees, Claudine Verheggen, Meredith Williams, and Saul Kripke’s Wittgenstein. Finally, I also examine the arguments of the proponents of quietism, namely Edward Minar and Martin Gustafsson.
I argue that the proponents of all three sides of the debate have thus far failed to present convincing cases for their claims. Individualists have largely neglected to take their opponents’ arguments into account and so risk begging the question against them, the arguments of the communitarians lack crucial justification, and the quietists’ attempts at undermining either side rely on misconceptions of the debate itself. However, the work done here in considering all these arguments enables us to see that individualism emerges as the most tenable position to hold in the end.

▼ The thesis explains the emerge of a Mapuche national movement from 1990, and the changes that this has involved, if looking at the communitarian tendencies that predominated at the centre of its origins in 1910.
The thesis proposes that
communitarianism and nationalism are two different political strategies. Although they may have similar starting points and share the same path to some extend, they part from one another when it comes to their final objectives. Nationalism is always a territorial strategy that aims to self-centre and materialize the political life of the claimed nation in its own territory. Whereas nationalism integrates the contradiction between centre and periphery,
communitarianism leans exclusively on de cleavage between dominated group and dominating group.
Communitarianism, specially political, can aspire to obtain a collective political organism, but it always lacks its own territory as the base of real self-government.
It is proposed as an explanatory hypothesis that nationalism rises in the Mapuche movement as the result of a strategical political process in a context of restricted national conditions and an increase of the social conditions, together with the presence of the restricted state-nationalist political opportunities and an increase of the international opportunities. Therefore, Mapuche nationalism is more linked to social and political transformations, than to processes of ethnic revitalization.
For the development of the hypotheses, the proposed model is one where the dependent variable and the shift from
communitarianism to nationalism is the result of the influence of two groups of independent variables. On the one hand, some determined national and social structural conditions, and on the other hand, state-national and international political opportunities. The structural conditions and the political opportunities influence the mobilization structures (type of organization and repertoire of mobilization) and the frames of interpretation of the movement (core concepts, articulatory ideas and political objectives). The variations (though slow) of the structural conditions and the appearing of political opportunities, reconfigure the components of the structures of mobilization and of the frame of interpretation of the movement, reflecting the transition from
communitarianism to nationalism.
By applying a historic institutionalist perspective to the Mapuche case, the analysis articulates three groups of theories: 1) relatives to
communitarianism and nationalism; 2) those that explain the formation of cleavages, associated to the expansion of the State-nation, economic development and modernization; and 3) the theories concerning political opportunities, structures of mobilization and the frames of interpretation, relative to social movements.

▼ The primary aim of this thesis is to reach a better empirical and theoretical understanding of what ‘community involvement’ means and what work it does in restorative justice. A case study approach was adopted to examine the involvement of the community in one selected practice of restorative justice, namely youth offender panels in England and Wales. Data collection comprised 127 interviews with key stakeholders involved in youth offender panels, as well as observation of 39 panel meetings, and analysis of related documents (e.g. panel reports and contracts). The role of ‘community’ in youth offender panels is argued to be more ‘theatrical’ (or rhetorical) than real: community panel members do not have a real say in the type or extent of reparation the offender should undergo, they do not clearly benefit from this reparation, and they do not support the reintegration of offenders into the community. The experience of youth offender panels suggests that the greater involvement of lay members of the community – or their changing role from mere witnesses/juries to facilitators – does not help to fully incorporate community harm into criminal justice practice. The English and Welsh experience also suggests that restorative justice advocates have placed unreasonably high expectations on the benefits of lay involvement. For example, this study found that lay members of the community do not have better ‘local knowledge’ than professionals. All in all, a key lesson from the experience of youth offender panels is that – while ignoring the kind of community that features in contemporary, urban contexts – restorative justice programmes run the risk of paying lip service to genuine community involvement. In conclusion, it is argued that restorative justice programmes need to start from a more concrete and up-to-date notion of community. While operationalizing community involvement, they need to acknowledge, all at once: the importance of place; the importance of family links, friendship and other social ties; and the importance of similar social traits and identities.

▼ Chinese-Indonesian communities are experiencing identity crises from socio-normative anti-Chinese sentiment and discrimination. Since the conclusion of the Suharto administration, Chinese-Indonesian populations are publicly victimized for the degradation of the state—labeled as ‘suspicious’ ‘foreign orientals’—and have experienced devastating violence. Basing this sentiment and discrimination on centuries of compounded social, colonial, and nationalistic perceptions, Chinese-Indonesians experience structural violence that continues to impede their observation of cultural-religious affinities and security in lieu of Indonesian societal-exceptionalism. In response to this environment, Chinese-Indonesian communities have erected communal security apparatuses founded within religious institutions in attempt to solidify the components of Chinese-Indonesian-ness to mitigate continued violence. This thesis analyzes these apparatuses to identity the dilemma and status of Chinese-Indonesian cultural identity.
