▼ Aim: The overarching aims of this thesis were to (a) gain further insight into the developmental/cognitive aspects of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in young children, and (b) assess outcome after interventions of varying intensity. Methods: In a prospectively designed longitudinal naturalistic study, 208 preschool children with ASD were comprehensively assessed - including with a variety of cognitive tests and other structured neurodevelopmental/adaptive interviews, observation schedules and questionnaires - before start of intervention and at the end of intervention after two years. Interventions given were based on principles of applied behaviour analysis (ABA) and were classified as intensive or non-intensive. The primary outcome variable was change in Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales composite scores. Subgroups with Good outcome and Poor outcome were identified by ≥15% positive/negative change in VABS composite scores. Results: Considerable changes with regard to ASD type, general cognitive level, adaptive behaviour and expressive speech were found, especially in children with atypical autism and in those with developmental delay/borderline intellectual functioning at the first assessment. About half the total group met criteria for intellectual disability (ID) at the two-year follow-up. Adaptive behaviour levels corresponded well with the level of intellectual functioning. Low processing speed negatively affected general adaptive skills, including in the domains communication, daily living skills, and motor skills. There was no difference in outcome between the intensive and non-intensive intervention groups. The single most important outcome predictor was cognitive level when dichotomized into IQ<70 vs >70. Conclusions: Development profiles changed considerably in many children over the two-year period. Low processing speed - possibly indicative of executive dysfunction - was common even in relatively high functioning children. There was no significant difference between the intensive and non-intensive groups with regard to outcome; instead the child´s general cognitive level seemed to be the most important factor for prognosis. Children who are diagnosed with ASD at a very young age need to be followed up prospectively over several years. The naturalistic findings do not provide support for the use of very intensive as compared with less intensive ABA intervention in a community-based group of children with ASD.

Purpose: Theoretically, the main purpose of this paper is to study the approach to the positioning of a brand. Practically, the case study of the Banfi brand in Hong Kong market will be studied. Attempts will be made throughout this work in order to identify which position Banfi brand has to achieve for its competitiveness in Hong Kong, and so, the result of the project will be of practical use to the company. Methodology and Methods: The realist stance will be used to conduct the study. Concerning the data sources, various sources of data have been used. Questionnaire and interviews were used as primary data to collect information about Castello Banfi and its situation in Hong Kong market, as well as the customer needs in Hong Kong. Secondary data, such as online journal, company’s annual report, and websites are also used to collect information regarding the Italian wine industry, the company and its competitors. Secondary sources like literature are also used for referencing theories and concepts. The main research model is adapted from Kapferer’s. Main concepts are Brand Positioning, Brand Identity. Conclusion: The positioning of the brand is formed with the study of three main factors which are the competition environment, the target market, and the benefits the brand stands for. Positioning a brand in a specific market is not only to strengthen the distinctive features that the company has to differentiate from the competitors, and also appealing to that market, but it also has to be aligned with the Brand Identity of that brand. In Banfi’s case, it can be concluded that by strengthening the ‘high-class wine consumers’, ‘Tuscan experience’, and ‘value for money’ in the positioning of Banfi, the brand is promising to gain competitive advantage in the market. ▼ In the world of today, Internet is a part of everything we do. Almost all appliances, from the cell phone to in some cases even freezers, are getting options to connect up to the Internet. But in this great, new world lurks dangers, as new threats are developed and sent out on the Internet at the same rate with which they are resolved. The people in charge of managing their networks, be it a parent in a household or an employee at a corporation, needs knowledge of how to tackle these threats in a productive manner. Where do these people gain their knowledge and what does the public –who are joining the connected world at a rapid rate – think about having to gain this knowledge by themselves? Perhaps only a few need the knowledge of cybersecurity, or perhaps it should be covered as part of the school curriculum? This work strives to find the general opinion on this problem in one of the world’s most technologically advanced cities: Hong Kong. Data of the citizens’ opinion on the subject was collected using a questionnaire handed out to citizens in multiple public places in Hong Kong. This research could greatly benefit governments or corporations who are in the pipeline of starting up courses for cybersecurity education or businesses in need of people with that knowledge. The result was then compiled and analysed at which point the results then showed that the citizens of Hong Kong feel exposed to the threats that phishing poses. However, the majority also believed themselves capable of defending against phishing attempts. The result also showed the citizens claimed to have an understanding of phishing and a general awareness about most of the threats. The majority of the participants also thought that the responsibility to educate the populace about phishing should lie with the school system. Future work based on this study could, for example, broaden the perspective of the survey and include different types of cybersecurity threats or use the same concept, only changing the focused threat to another.

▼ Aims The overall aim of this thesis was to explore assessments of communicative participation in children and adolescents (hereafter: adolescents) with acquired brain injuries, mainly through evaluations in the Communicative Effectiveness Index (CETI) and in interviews with the participants. The aim was also to capture important changes in communication over time. Five sub-studies were carried out, presented in Papers I-V. Methods Paper I: Pragmatic evaluations were explored in eight participants with severe brain injuries. The data were obtained in clinical surroundings by a speech language pathologist and rehabilitation assistants, using clinically applied pragmatic taxonomy, the Pragmatic Protocol (PP). Paper II: Descriptive and comparative methods were used to assess the communication outcome in an adolescent with ABI. The investigations included linguistic and cognitive test data and adolescent/parent evaluations of communication skills in the CETI, post-injury and at follow-up. Video recordings to explore communication management were analysed through self-evaluation and interview procedures. Paper III: The contribution of CETI in the assessment of ABI was examined through parent evaluations of communication in 30 adolescents, which were compared with linguistic, cognitive and brain injury data. Paper IV: Assessments of daily communication skills delivered by the parents of eight adolescents were compared with self-evaluations by the adolescents themselves. Interview data were analysed in particular by applying activity-based communication analysis, ACA (Allwood, 2013), and the theory of distributed cognition (Hutchins, 1995a). Paper V: Change scores in 30 adolescents between post-injury measurements and follow-up results were estimated. Results Paper I: Seven of eight participants with severe brain injuries were assessed as having a highly reduced capacity to communicate within all the assessed pragmatic parameters that involved speech and language skills. Paper II: Self-evaluation of the video recordings and analyses of communication management in Paper II confirmed impaired communication, related to language comprehension difficulties, high speech rate and the number of speakers involved. Paper III: The CETI data showed that adolescents with more communication difficulties, according to their parents, also obtained significantly lower scores in tests of grammar comprehension and verbal IQ. The trend was similar for word comprehension, naming and perceptual IQ, although this was not supported by significant results. However, complex communicative interactions, such as fast conversations with several speakers involved, were affected in all participants, including those with higher results in linguistic and cognitive tests. As a result, complex communicative situations appeared to be particularly vulnerable to the effects of the brain injuries, regardless of injury severity. ▼ The aim of this thesis was (a) to examine a Swedish version of a measure for early identification and treatment evaluation of children with disruptive behaviour problems and (b) to explore the effectiveness, in terms of reduction of children’s disruptive behavioural problems, of interventions not specifically directed towards the children but to their caregivers and other adults in their immediate environment. The focus of this thesis has been on clinical applicability. However, their have been considerable advances in the knowledge of the origins, development and maintenance of disruptive behaviour in children. This has led to corresponding changes in treatment. In line with this, research on phenomenology, prevalence, etiology, treatment and assessment of children that display disruptive behaviour are presented as an introduction to the empirical studies. The aim of study I was to develop and examine a systemic school-based model for detection and early intervention among 4 to 12 year old children who displayed externalizing behaviour problems. The intervention was a combination of the Marte Meo model and Coordination meetings. Treatment effects in the group who had received the intervention (N= 33) were compared with a group (N=16) who had received treatment-as-usual in their ordinary school setting. Assessments were carried out before and two years after the intervention. There was a significant decrease in children’s symptoms for the intervention group, but not for the comparison group. The aim of study II was to evaluate the effectiveness of the structured parent training programme Incredible Years Series in diverse clinical settings in Sweden. Parents of 113 children aged 3 to 9 participated in the study. Pre-data were collected prior to commencement of the parent training groups and post-data immediately after the training group sessions had finished. Significant reduction was found on all symptom-related measures in parents’ ratings. A significant increase in the self-rated well-being of the parents was also found. The aim of study III was to examine the psychometric properties and obtain Swedish norms for the Eyberg Child Behaviour Inventory (ECBI). Parents of 841 children aged 3 to 10 participated. The ECBI showed sound psychometric properties and seems to be a very useful measure in a Swedish context. Normative data from the Swedish sample was also presented. The aim of Study IV was to examine a three factor solution of the ECBI in a confirmatory factor analysis based on 22 items in a Swedish sample. The same sample as in study III was used. The results were consistent with the results from an American sample indicating that the 22-item version of the ECBI is a robust and useful alternative that can be used for evaluating and measuring treatment outcome. Preliminary normative data was also presented. ▼ Disability is a state which questions one’s social standing. Individuals with disability are often seen shunned and sheltered from the society. It is understood that one cannot expect the world to revolve around us, rather we make adjustments to make life smoother. This thesis looks at non-verbal communication strategies within one case study who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and multiple communication needs. The major share of the thesis looks at the multimodal communication where the communication and bodily gestures gain prominence. Cerebral Palsy, in an overview, (CP) is a group of permanent neurological disorder that affects one’s body movement and muscle coordination, commonly seen in an infant stage or early childhood caused by the damage to the brain that hinders the brain’s ability to control movement and posture of the body. CP affects the outer layer of the brain that directs the muscle movements. Alongside a stationary characteristic, a lot of motor, sensory and intellectual impairments accompany the disorder. These characteristics mark the beginning of life for the CP injured and is seen affecting their physical, mental and social existence, limiting their abilities of motor and oral skills impairing the ability of speech. Physique alterations include changes in jaw structure, lips and tongue making it nearly impossible in articulating words (Geytenbeek, 2011). Communication is an integral part of any relation. Feelings and emotions are often conveyed through communicating it in two different ways- verbal (psycholinguistics) - that involves a lot of ideas, messages conveyed through words and speech for communication and non-verbal (psychobiological) - involves facial and bodily expressions. My prime target is the latter’s way of communication, how these non- verbal communication can be interpreted, how do the family members and personal assistants decipher the expressions and understand subtle nuances. The complexity of communication within this group is further intensified by the power structures and decision makers in the society. It also tries to look at different models of communication and the strategies to make communication effective among the disabled group. Communication is very mutable and through this dissertation I try to analyze techniques that gives visibility to varied experiences and turning them into representations of certain ideas. Also it tries to unravel the emerging problems within the communication arena, misinterpretations thus reaching a conclusive hypothesis that communication is constantly irregular and fluctuating according to distinctive time, person and space.

The purposes of this thesis are twofold: firstly, to analyse the differences in CI behavior between firms in Sweden and Hong Kong (HK); secondly, to analyse the reasons for these differences by using Hofstede’s culture theory. This study was based on data from the 2nd international CINet survey and IBM questionnaire survey, limited to the culture in Hong Kong (HK) and Sweden. The finding of this comparative study showed that there are significant differences in CI behavior in the following aspects:  The view in HK is that the interest of the group should prevail over the individual’s, because there has a proverb”unity is power” in Chinese culture. Firms in Sweden are more concerned with the interests of individual’s.  Employees in Hong Kong would like to use organizational formal tools and techniques to deal with a problem, although it is a society characterized by weak uncertainly avoidance. But firms in Swedish believe that problems can be solved without formal rules.  Employees in HK emphasizes cooperation and relationship in the process of working, while it is influenced by the culture of”guanxi” and collectivism. In comparison, Swedish employees care less about relationship.  People in HK pay much attention to the personal development, due to a competitive environment and a long-term orientated culture manifested as:”it is never too old to learn”. Swedes, however, want to study when it is necessary.  Managers in HK are willing to support CI activities by provide sufficient resources and self-discipline influenced by the Chinese culture of ”set an example”. Correspondingly, Swedish firms don't have the regulation about what manager necessary should do. This is the first study that tries to explain the difference on CI behavior by using Hofstede’s culture theory in HK and Sweden, using a statistical method to test 34 behaviors in CI Behavior Model. It has to mention that there have 17 behaviors in the total behaviors which have been proved to be different, and 11 of these behaviors can be explained by Hofstede’s model in this thesis. There are also some other factors that can explain the differences in CI behaviors. In this thesis, it is shown that size of company matters. Possible explanations provided by other cultural theories are also presented.

▼ The main aim of this thesis was to investigate literacy, ‘theory of mind’ (ToM) and narrative ability in children who had screened positive for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) (comprehensively assessed for neuropsychiatric problems), and relate the findings to their structural linguistic capacity, as measured by language tests at the word and sentence levels. Considering the important roles of families in shaping children’s language socialisation, another aim was to explore the parental experiences of having a child go through the neuropsychiatric and language diagnostic process. The thesis includes four substudies. Almost 200 children participated in one or several of the substudies. Children with ASD were recruited after general population screening and non-ASD comparison children were recruited from schools. Eleven parents of the children with ASD were also included. Study I, aimed to investigate early and concurrent predictors of reading ability in children who had screened positive for ASD. Children were grouped into three types of reading profiles at 8 years of age: approximately one third were skilled readers, half had difficulties with both word reading and reading comprehension and one fifth were ‘hyperlexic’ (i.e. strong word decoding but poor comprehension). Children who showed poor reading comprehension also displayed oral language difficulties concurrently and already at age 3 years. In Study II, a computer application, manipulated in three conditions, was used to investigate the influence of verbal support in ToM. Neither verbal support during the ToM conditions nor higher language ability in the children with ASD was obviously linked to a better outcome on the ToM task. As expected, the ASD group performed poorer than age-matched peers without ASD on the ToM task. Study III, aimed to describe oral narrative ability in children with ASD and determine how it is related to structural language ability) and non-verbal cognitive abilities in children with and without ASD. The results for the ASD group were compared with those for both an age-matched and a younger language-matched group of children without ASD. The ASD group used shorter sentences and fewer subordinate clauses in their retold narratives. Further analyses showed that nonverbal sequential reasoning and language ability explained unique variance in their narrative performance. In Study IV, in-depth interviews were conducted with parents of 11 children with ASD included in the thesis. Following a qualitative phenomenological hermeneutic method, the essence that emerged was ‘negotiating knowledge’ and three main themes were: ‘seeking knowledge’, ‘trusting and challenging experts’, and ‘empowered but alone’. To conclude, a clear influence of language was shown for both literacy and narrative ability in children with ASD, implicating a need for a comprehensive assessment of language abilities, in order to better clinically and educationally support children and families. I och med att konsumtionssamhället förbrukar mer än någonsin, har det blivit nödvändigt att flytta produktion till länder med kapacitet att producera höga kvantiteter. Det här har lett till att det blir allt viktigare för företagen att redovisa var produkterna kommer ifrån (COO). "Made in" märkningen är inte ovanlig, och är allmänt känd hos de flesta svenskar. Märkningen kan till och med uppfattas som en kvalitetsstämpel enligt tidigare forskning. Det här gällde dock endast industriländers “Made in” märkning samt för länder vars kulturs speglade konsuments. Men hur ofta COO används vid kvalitetsutvärdering ifrågasätts i rapporten eftersom det finns andra attribut som kan uppfattas som lättare att jämföra, till exempel pris. Pris är en vanlig kvalitetsmätare där konsumenten antar att ett högt pris är ekvivalent med god kvalitet och vice versa. Varumärke är även det ett vanligt attribut att förknippa med en varas kvalitet. Ett varumärke är någon konsument ofta är bekant med, och har byggt ett förtroende till. Både pris, varumärke och COO är alltså faktorer som kan komma att påverka konsumentens kvalitetsuppfattning. Uppsatsen syftar därför till att granska hur svenska konsumenter förhåller sig till COO vid kvalitetsmätning jämfört med attributen pris och varumärke. För att betona COO har vi valt att studera världens mest uppmärksammade "Made in" märkning, vilket är "Made in China". Kina har länge varit känt för att producera enorma kvantiteter mot låga kostnader och har sedan börja av 2000-talet haft en svindlande ekonomisk tillväxt, vilket skapar frågetecken om landet har kommit att bli ett industriland. Vi valde därför att tillägga frågeställningen om svenska konsumenter fortfarande upplever Kina som ett utvecklingsland. För att besvara frågorna utfördes en enkätundersökning där respondenterna fick besvara fjorton frågor om ämnet. Urvalet bestod av arbetande och studerande män och kvinnor i åldrarna 20 till 59 år. Enkätundersökningen gav 187 giltiga enkäter. Svaren resulterade i att COO, enligt respondenterna, var den minst viktiga variabeln vid kvalitetsbedömning. Dock kunde vi se en förändring i attityden hos majoriteten av de yngre respondenterna, samt hos de äldre kvinnorna. De uppfattade inte längre Kina som ett utvecklingsland. Trots det här var Kina det land som främst förknippades med dålig kvalitet enligt respondenterna, vilket ger en antydan om att landet ändå betraktas som ett utvecklingsland. Anledningen till att respondenterna väljer att kalla Kina för ett industriland, men ändå förknippar produkterna med lägre kvalitet kan bero på de kulturella olikheterna, eftersom respondenterna påvisar en viss grad av etnocentrism. För att respondenterna skulle se ett tillverkningsland som bra, ställdes krav på arbetsförhållanden, etik och miljö, som alla tre är frågor som rör kulturella, ekonomiska och politiska aspekter. Det här skapar en diskussion eftersom respondenterna tidigare angivit att tillverkningslandets politik, kultur och ekonomi inte är speciellt viktigt.

▼ Every year 9000 children are estimated to die in traffic accidents in China. Fast motorization of the country in combination with low usage of child restraint system’s (CRS’s), are the two contributing factors to this alarming number. The vision of this thesis is to increase the usage of CRS’s in China, by understanding why the users are using the CRS and why the non-users are not using. The behavioural methodology Switch was used to investigate what positive behaviours could be copied and implemented in a larger scale to increase the usage. Interviews were performed with 30 users and 30 non-users in tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 cities on the east coast of China. The main findings from the interviews showed that the reasons for not using was that the parents found the CRS complicated to install and to use, that it took too much space, that they did not know the benefits with a CRS and found it unnecessary and that they could not convince their children to sit in the CRS. Surprisingly most non-users already owned a CRS, but stopped using it. The users were using because they had experienced the CRS from abroad or got knowledge from other sources such as media or friends. Some parents were using because of a practicality issues such as the trouble to hold a heavy 3-year old child during a long trip. The behaviours chosen to represent the users for further work were learning from others, selection support, how to install, how to persist, and how to pay the knowledge of the CRS forward. The behaviour of the users was copied and implemented in a strategy consisting of the five parts above. The strategy is an interactive webpage with a close linkage to social networks to encourage sharing, and with a supporting poster- and bumper sticker campaign for spreading. The final product of the thesis work is a campaign including a fully working prototype of the webpage, which will be handed over to Volvo Cars for verification internally to make sure that the concept supports the different parts in a suitable and correct way before a public implementation. Material for poster and bumper stickers is also a part of the final delivery.

▼ The background of the present study is an interest in the use of digital technologies for in-service training activities in industry. Globalization, international competition and transnational production are elements that currently transform work practices and work organizations. In the food industry, which is the empirical context of this study, globalization has resulted in a number of changes including new forms of production, new international regulations and an increase in quality control of food and food production. These food quality initiatives and the new regulations, in turn, have resulted in a need for in-service training of staff. By analyzing how people actually engage in and use web-based environments as part of in-service training efforts, the overall aim of the research is to contribute to our understanding of the kind of communication and agency that emerges in web-based environments, and how such environments constitute contexts for communicative socialisation and learning for people employed in industry. The focus of the present study is on the nature of activities that unfolds when using digital media and learning resources in such settings. Analytically, such a focus is pursued employing a sociocultural perspective on communication and learning. Empirical material has been collected from archived chat log files from web-based in-service training courses. The results from this study, as outlined and discussed in four empirical articles, show that the participants accommodated rather smoothly to the affordances of the technology. They also managed to increase their skills and exert agency when engaging in communicative activities mediated by chat technology. Through chat interaction with other participants and experts, the course participants gradually appropriated some of the analytical tools and practices of quality assurance. Put differently, they literally wrote themselves into a different understanding of their current work practices. One of the productive features in these training activities is that they constituted hybrid contexts for learning. For instance, they are hybrid in the sense that practices of instruction, on the one hand, and practices of production work on the other, were salient resources for participation. From a pragmatic point of view, this study indicates that these activities supported by web-based technologies seem to offer feasible models for organizing distance learning in both further and in-service training

▼ Earlier studies shows that democracy within the preschool is an important and on-going work, but could implicate certain consequences. For example that goals regarding democracy and influence in the preschool, rarely is done in practice but instead remains just words on a paper. It could also mean that the pedagogues lack education and knowledge within the area, but also how they react to the influence of children. Preschool is expected to be a place for all children, no matter what luggage the child is carrying. The luggage is filled with the life experience, the personality and in this case the needs that the child has. The needs could be anything from nearness to physical and psychological disorders that requires more pedagogical attention. We have in this study looked closer into how children in need of certain support are allowed to influence the everyday work in the preschool. We have observed two different preschools within the same school district, interviewed teachers and handed out questionnaires to parents and legal guardians. The object has been to study if children with disabilities and children without disabilities, gets the same opportunity to influence and to participate in the everyday work in the preschool. Our question formulation in this study is; How does children with special needs get the opportunity to influence the everyday work within the preschool? By comparing these preschools we have been able to draw the conclusion that differences exist regarding how the children gets to influence the everyday work in the preschool. A lot of it has to do with what approach and viewpoint the pedagogue has regarding inclusion. The goals from the curriculum and other steering documents, often ends up only being guidelines and are not fulfilled. The children we have studied has disabilities which are both neurological and neuropsychiatrical. The result in this study does not represent the entire teacher community. It is only based on the preschools that we have decided to observe.

▼ Studies have shown that creative mathematically founded reasoning (CMR) outperforms algorithmic reasoning (AR) in regards to retention and (re)construction of knowledge. This suggests that creativity should be encouraged in national high-school mathematics curricula. The aim of the present study is to compare how creativity is framed in different national high-school mathematics curricula, using the following definition: creativity is the characteristics of people, processes, and environments which lead to new and original products that are useful or otherwise attractive to an individual or a society. Utilizing content and discourse analysis, the present study thus contrasts how the high-school mathematics curricula of Singapore, Hong Kong, Sweden, and Norway handle and value creativity, and also examines which role creativity takes in each curricula. Findings suggest that Singapore’s curriculum emphasizes creativity the most, and frequently does so in relation to assessment. Hong Kong’s curriculum is found to emphasize creativity in diverse ways, often using words with connotations to playfulness. Analysis of Sweden’s curriculum indicates a relatively minute focus on creativity, tending to put it in a teacher-centered context. A feature of Norway’s curriculum is an increasing emphasis on creativity as courses approach tertiary education. This also suggests a rising value of creativity in its curriculum. A similar though not as pronounced trajectory is found also in Singapore’s curriculum. In the Asian and Norwegian curricula, creativity is expressed both as a means and an end, while in Sweden’s curriculum it is only seen as an end. The results are discussed in terms of potential reasons for the prominent national features, and the study also includes an evaluation of the aptness of the suggested definition of creativity, a review of the limitations of the study, as well as propositions for further research. Finally, two recommendations are given to the National Agency for Education in Sweden – Skolverket – based on the results of the study: 1) diversify the emphasis on creativity in the curriculum, and 2) ensure alignment between what teachers value and what Skolverket values with respect to creativity.
