▼ Since Will Eisner defined comics as sequential art, critics have continued to employ narrative definitions and linearapproaches to the form. As a result, many non-sequential and experimental forms of comics, especially in the field ofcomics poetry, have been ignored. Consequently, a new model for comics analysis is needed to encompass andaddress narrative, non-narrative, multi-linear, abstract and experimental developments within the form.In response to narrative assumptions and the lack of non-linear modes of analysis, my practice-led researchproposes segmentivity as an alternative model for comics criticism. This concept of segmentivity stems fromRachel Blau DuPlessis attempt to distinguish the components of poetry from narrativity and performativity. Byassessing how poetic segments are employed in a myriad of narrative and non-narrative comics case studies, thismodel of segmentivity enables comics analysis to advance beyond sequential lexicons and limitations, ensuring therelevance of comics theory to contemporary practice.The critical survey of comics within this study includes examples of comics poetry by Dino Buzzati, KennethKoch, Alan Moore, Warren Craghead as well as primary interviews with comics poetry practitioners Matt Madden,Bianca Stone, Michael Farrell and Alexander Rothman. The works of these creators evidence the need for a nonsequentialmodel of comics analysis that challenges the dominant understanding of comics as a purely narrativeform.Both my critical and creative works focus on the relationship between comics and poetry. Considering comicsscholarship is characterised by the closeness of creators and critics, I felt it essential that my creative work engagewith the practice of making comics. Accordingly, my creative work develops the comics poetry series, ANEKI, whichinnovates approaches to comics outside of traditional media and linear panel grid structures. An account of thiscollaborative process is also framed within the discussion of comics poetry examples.Ultimately, this study broadens approaches to comics creation and criticism, advancing potential modes ofanalysis and the multimodal possibilities of the form.

In my dissertation, I bring together the fields of comics theory, biopolitics, and queer theory in order to read contemporary coming-of-age graphic novels that represent characters (and sometimes lives) at the margins. Coming-of-age graphic novels in this category often depict complex engagements with trauma and history, and couple those depictions with the loss of attachments: the subjects represented in these texts usually do not belong. I make a case for productive spaces inside of the unbelonging represented in my chosen texts. In Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, Alison finds multiple nodes of attachment with her deceased father through the process of writing his history. Importantly, none of those attachments require that she forgive him for past violences, or that she overwrite his life in order to shift focus onto the positive. Jillian and Mariko Tamaki’s Skim features a protagonist, Skim, who is rendered an outcast because of her body, her hobbies, and eventually her process of mourning. Skim carves out a life that is survivable for her, and resists the compulsion to perform happiness while she does it. Charles Burns’s Black Hole depicts a group of teens who are excommunicated from their suburb after contracting a disfiguring, sexually transmitted disease, and who take to the woods in order to build a miniature, ad-hoc society for themselves. I concentrate on the question of precarity, and notice that safety and stability have a strong correlation with gender and sexuality: women and queers are overrepresented at the margins.

Dissertation

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

In my dissertation, I bring together the fields of comics theory, biopolitics, and queer theory in order to read contemporary coming-of-age graphic novels that represent characters (and sometimes lives) at the margins. I focus, especially, on the way that people who are marginalized come to be that way, and I come to the conclusion that marginalized people suffer losses are that tied to different kinds of trauma. Sometimes those traumas are historical: like slavery, or internment. Sometimes they are personal, like ostracization from one’s community. And, finally, sometimes trauma comes from social systems: some subjects are pushed to the margins of society by the same forces that bring others into it. In the case of all of those types of trauma, I find a possibility for community: if people are sometimes marginalized, they are often resilient. The bulk of my dissertation tries to find where exclusions end, and make-shift communities begin.

Wissenschaftliche Forschung, die sich mit utopischer Fiktion beschäftigt, hat sich stark auf Literatur und in letzter Zeit auch auf Films als Fallstudien gerichtet, dabei blieben Comics als Medium trotz der großen Anzahl von Veröffentlichungen in dieser Gattung unbeachtet. Das Ziel dieser Thesis ist es, Comics, die mit dem utopischen Impuls umgehen und vor allem jene, die als Kritische Dystopien bezeichnet werden können – Dystopien, die ein offenes Ende besitzen, subversiv und unverhüllt politisch sind – zu analysieren. Es stellt sich die Frage, wie Comics durch ihr mediumspezifisches Verfahren utopische Fiktion darstellen können und wie Comics ihren Rand-Status ausnutzen, um subversive und kritische Erzählungen zu schaffen. Die Recherche ist stark auf die theoretischen Werke von Tom Moylan and Raffaella Baccolini angewiesen – sie haben die Begriffe Kritische Utopie und Kritische Dystopie geprägt, um die utopische Fiktion, die in den letzten drei Jahrzenten des zwanzigsten Jahrhundert erschienen sind, besser zu verstehen. Die einzelnen Fallstudien gehen in Werke von verschiedenen kulturellen Hintergründe hinein - Akira (1982-88) von dem japanischen Manga Autor Katsuhiro Otomo, V for Vendetta (1982-89) von dem britischen Autor Alan Moore, und Channel Zero (1997) und DMZ (2005-2012) von dem nordamerikanischen Autor Brian Wood. Nach einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem theoretischen Rahmen, vor allem mit den Begriffen Kritische Dystopie und Comics, werden diese Werke historisch betrachtet und ihre gesellschaftspolitisches Umfeld analysiert. Diese Untersuchung der gesellschaftlichen und politischen Probleme sowie ihre Kritik werden in diesen Werken durch das Eingehen in die gegenwärtigen Probleme einer fiktiven dystopischen Gesellschaft, die offenbar eine Verbindung zu der vom Autor hat, dargestellt. Es ist das Ziel dieser Arbeit festzustellen, wie genau diese Kritik erreicht ist, zu verstehen was für eine Rolle Comics, ein akademisches unberücksichtiges Medium, in sozialer und gesellschaftlicher Kritik spielen und welche besondere Bedeutung sowie unerforschte Qualitäten sie zur utopischen Fiktion beitragen.

Academic study on utopian fiction has been largely focused on literature and, more recently, on films for case studies, leaving comics as a medium often unnoticed, despite its large number of contributions to the genre. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to analyse comics that deal with the utopian impulse, particularly the ones that can be argued to fall on the subgenre of critical dystopias – dystopias that are open-ended, subversive and overtly political. Some questions to be tackled will arise, such as how do comics make use of their medium-specific characteristics to represent utopian fiction and how do comics take advantage of their status as a fringe medium to create subversive and critical narratives. The research relies heavily on the theoretical works of Tom Moylan and Raffaella Baccolini, who introduced the terms Critical Utopia and Critical Dystopia in order to better understand utopian fiction…

▼ This dissertation argues that twenty-first-century American novels, comics, and films are increasingly showing that popular, paraliterary genre fiction is a deep resource for historical representation. "Pulp historiography" is a new branch in the evolution of historical fiction, marking the junction of postmodernist historiography and the "generic turn" of recent literary history. Its practitioners participate in various paraliterary and literary genres within single works by alternating between or hybridizing distinct conventions. This jarring approach denaturalizes the templates of literary realism and professional historiography that dominate representations of the past. Pulp historiography thus exposes the way that genre conventions – and the cultural hierarchy that privileges certain genres above others – shape historical knowledge. Moreover, pulp historiography uses the metaphors, plots, and representational strategies of paraliterature – including comics, fantasy, mysteries, science fiction, and Westerns – to narrate history in powerful, new ways. While this engagement with popular forms might seem to extend the high/low dialectic of modernism and postmodernism, this dissertation argues that it is less a pastiche of paraliterary traditions than a participation in them. For twenty-first-century historical fiction, the narrative forms of mass entertainment are complex traditions that both have a history and have much to say about history. The genre mash-ups analyzed in Pulp Historiography bear out this historiographic potential. Junot Díaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) uses science fiction and fantasy to fill gaps in the traumatic history of Dominicans during and after the Trujillo dictatorship. Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union (2007) synthesizes hardboiled detective fiction and alternate-history science fiction to simulate a sense of the precariousness of modern Jewish history. Mat Johnson and Warren Pleece's Incognegro: A Graphic Mystery (2008) revises superhero comics, detective mysteries, passing narratives, and anti-lynching journalism to illustrate how the history of racial representation fueled the history of racial violence in the Jim Crow South. And Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal's The Hurt Locker (2008) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012) and Clint Eastwood and Jason Hall's American Sniper (2014) fuse documentary aesthetics, Orientalist tropes, and the American frontier myth to narrate the "war on terror" as a Western writ large.

▼ This dissertation’s inquiry focuses specifically on a series of ethnographic graphic works, or ethnographica, that I have composed in collaboration with co-author Stephanie Jones. Together, we have ventured to co-design and co-write a series of comics designed to serve as a venue for discussion of Jones’ teacher education research. These creative arts-based accounts address the material and discursive conditions that intra-acted during the early life and emergent career of Dr. Jones, predominately focusing on findings she derived from a three-year ethnographic study of a teacher education course she developed and taught. Together we wove together notes, recollections, multimedia documentation and auto-ethnographic memoirs in order to create visual and textual examinations of entangled phenomena presented in the multimodal, graphic form of drawn comics. In this manner we sought to consider and juxtapose concepts, apparatuses, and events in a manner that could allow for more complex material considerations than the traditional alphanumeric text alone. Considering these material and discursive intra-actions in light of Stephanie’s subsequent efforts and accomplishments in the field of teaching, we sought to tease out the variety of intertwined factors that might inform theories of teacher education, ranging from the political, social and economic, to the cosmic and biographical. Further, I, in turn, have attempted to frame these graphic practices as being curricularly important in terms of their heterogenetic, or mutant, tendencies, providing precedence for further experimentation in methods of inquiry, especially desirable in what I perceive to be climate of standardized practices of enforced normative, homogeneous models of living. I argue that our works of ethnographica could stand as examples of how scholarship might be affected differently, much in the same way that the subdiscipline of visual ethnography and its proponents have been successful in establishing an interstitial space for themselves to operate in academia while presenting and conducting their work through nontraditional media.

▼ This arts-based dissertation constructs and explores the relationship between cartoonist and teacher, and seeks to disrupt and expand the possibilities for both cartooning and pedagogy. Constructed in two parts, this dissertation is simultaneously a fictional graphic novel and a series of eleven essays and writings that emerge from the graphic novel. As a work of educational research, this dissertation seeks to understand how comics and cartooning function as a form of inquiry and research; to explain how cartooning constructs new knowledge; to explore the embodied practice of making comics as a contribution to the growing field of comics studies; and to widen the boundaries of what knowledge, learning, and research look like, so that other teachers, researchers, artists, and students might find these practices large enough to participate in. The graphic novel, The Well-Dressed Bear Will (Never) Be Found, was inspired by a series of pedagogical moments, most of which involved drawing comics with children in various educational settings. This comic uses text and image against one another to explore the arbitrary relationship between signifier and signified. The artistic style, formatting, and narrative all work to complicate attempts by the reader to come to a stable, enduring interpretation. Instead, this comic asks the reader to remain open and shifting, to discard metaphor, and to experience the comic metonymically instead: through intensities, sensations, and tentative conceptual convergences. Both the making and the reading of this comic simulate the sensation of navigating complex and contradictory educational spaces: classrooms, schools, lessons, and activities. The essays and writings that diverge from this comic recontextualize the concepts and ideas of the comic into the settings from which they originally emerged, using cartooning as a lens through which to construct new understandings regarding teaching, learning, and being in the world. Broadly, this dissertation constructs a “comics consciousness” or a specific way of existing in the world as informed by the practice of cartooning. A comics consciousness, as theorized in this research, consists of a particular ontological and epistemological orientation. Making comics—like engaging in any art practice for a sustained period of time—begins to function as a lens through which one sees and constructs the world. As a cartoonist working in fragmented, unregulated, imaginative medium, I have begun to see the world and my pedagogy as one that privileges the ambiguity of fragmentation, embraces the subversion of working outside mandates and expectations, and experiences the impossible as though it were real. A comics ontology suggests that what exists is all that can be observed and felt, what can be imagined, and what is unimaginable but emerges through drawing. ▼ From 1975 until the present Australian comics production has existed as a creative industry which is comprised of various clusters and social networks. These social networks consist of creative practitioners (stakeholders), cultural intermediaries, and public institutions, and are sustained through reciprocal social capital, knowledge, and innovation. Within this thesis I will be presenting the argument that the Australian comics industry is a case study into how a creative industry which relies on collective labour within scenes can contribute to creative economies on a global scale. This thesis is modelled after a chain narrative, with chapters focused on funding, production, distribution, retail, and marketing. I adapted the chain narrative framework from Cunningham and Higgs’ (2008) ‘Creative Chain’, this framework providing a comprehensive analysis of all agents involved in production and circulation. Throughout this narrative there is primary data in the form of ethnographic field notes and interviews, and my methodologies include Bourdieu’s theory of the cultural field and critical discourse analysis. My research has found that stakeholders and cultural intermediaries in the Australian comics industry are strategic in how they form clusters and networks to continue their practices and strengthen their markets. These strategies include knowledge brokering, as individuals and collectives, with state institutions and the corporate sector. Stakeholders and cultural intermediaries are also connected to other creative and comics industries through contractual labour, cultural tourism, and media convergence. This individual and collective agency is the key to the Australian comics industry’s resilience and growth, as stakeholders and cultural intermediaries increasingly occupy different physical, cultural and virtual spaces. Through entrepreneurialism and adaptation, stakeholders and cultural intermediaries convert social capital into cultural and economic capital. These practices are at once unique to the Australian comics industry, but are also reflected in various creative industry models. This thesis is the first case study which presents the theory that comics production could be considered a creative industry through shared economic structures. Comics are considered popular literature art in the modern world. They combine visual and linguistic aspects which interact with each other. The aim of this study is to analyze and highlight the problematic aspects of translating comics. The corpus of data includes three different series of comics which consist of fifteen different comics books.The analyzed comics involve several translation aspects which are investigated, for example, titles, dialogue texts, inscriptions and others. The translation of these linguistic elements usually is administrated by the translator but, nevertheless, some of them are translated by the in-house conventions. Non-linguistic aspects which include typographical signs in the comics also maintain cultural elements. The translation of the linguistic and non-linguistic signs depends on the choice of the translator and the analysis shows that most of the culture specific elements are adapted to the target language which makes the text understandable to all range of audience.

Šiuolaikiniame pasaulyje, komiksai yra laikomi populiaria literatūros šaka. Jie apjungia vaizdinius ir lingvistinius aspektus, kurie sąveikauja tarpusavyje. Šios studijos tikslas išanalizuoti ir išryškinti svarbiausius probleminius komiksų vertimo aspektus. Literatūros rinkinį, kuri yra nagrinėjama sudaro trys skirtingos komiksų serijos, kurios sudaro penkilika atskirų komiksų knygų. Nagrinėjamuose komiksuose išryškėja atskiri vertimo aspektai, kurie yra analizuojami, pavyzdžiui, pavadinimai, dialogai, užrašai, onomatopėja ir kiti.Daugumą sprendimų susijusių su šių aspektų vertimu priima pats vertėjas, tačiau esama tokių atvejų, kai komiksų vertimas priklauso ir nuo pačios leidyklos. Ne lingvistinai aspektai, kaip topografiniai ženklai, taip pat turi kultūrinių elementų. Lingvistinių ir ne lingvistinių ženklų vertimas priklauso nuo vertėjo. Komiksų vertimo analizė rodo, kad dauguma kultūrinių elementų yra pritaikyti prie lietuvių kalbos. Tai leidžia lengviau suprasti komiksus visų amžiaus grupių asmenims.

▼ The field of writing studies has long inquired about how writers engage in individualized writing processes. As an extension of this inquiry, contemporary scholarship in writing studies began to study collaborative writing through the understanding of writing as a social act. Our understanding of writing processes and collaborative writing has expanded through studies of writing as it occurs in the academy, the workplace, and extracurricular settings. Still, to a large extent, inquiries about writing processes and collaborative writing activity centered on alphabetic texts and focused on writers. Rarely do studies engage"in addition to writers"artists and designers as authors in the collaborative writing process. Composing, as understood by scholars and teachers of writing, is changing due to technological shifts in media and yet, as a field, we have failed to question multimodal composing as an individual or collaborative process. To extend previous writing studies scholarship, this dissertation engages qualitative case study methodology to explore three unique multimodal collaborations of comics authors. As a visual rhetoric scholar with a personal focus on teaching students about composing in all media, I am drawn to asking questions about how arguments are composed using multimodal means. My personal and scholarly interest in comics led to inquiries about how comics are composed and initial research found that comics are often composed in collaboration, with writers and artists who with them carry multiple and varying literacies (alphabetic text, visual, spatial, etc.). Comics provide a rich subject of study to address this inquiry because of their inherently multimodal nature as a medium that incorporates both word and picture in diverse combinations and for a variety of rhetorical purposes. For this study, I have chosen to focus on comics texts that differ in terms of subject matter, genre, and collaborative makeup in order to examine multimodal collaborations and create distinct cases. Through three cases of multimodal collaboration"Understanding Rhetoric, the Cheo comics, and Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline"this study argues for a further complication of our field\'s understanding of writing processes and collaborative composing.
