▼ This thesis describes the conditions that influence technology acquisition when an industry partner is involved. The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge regarding the conditions that affect effective acquisition of technology by collaboration by identifying and describing the relationship between the following variables: key activities and influential factors.
The results are drawn from the analysis of eleven case studies involving experiences from different industries including chemicals, oil and gas and biofuels. The research adopts the perspective of an acquiring firm, which is interested in incorporating a new technology into its operations in order to meet a particular business need. Such a business need can be, for example, entering into a new market, meeting key customer requirements or improving operational efficiency.
The results indicate that technology acquisition involving an industry partner can be described as a six-stage process where the acquiring firm may or may not get involved in the development of the technology concept. During the process a number of factors can influence the acquisition and implementation of the technology in the acquiring firm’s operations. These factors can be divided into six categories: business alignment, structural match, development management, technology uncertainty, implementation opportunity and contextual factors.
The results also suggest that effective acquisition of technology by means of collaboration is achieved by the combination of three conditions: effective partnership management, effective execution of the co-development project and effective transference of the technology to the recipient system in the acquiring firm.
The research provides relevant implications for theory and practice. On the one hand, technology acquisition by means of collaboration has been marginally addressed in technology management literature; extant literature has given more attention to organisational modes to acquire technology by collaboration rather than increasing our understanding of the dynamics of technology partnerships. On the other hand, the outcomes offer practitioners an account of the key factors and activities in technology acquisition projects involving an industry partner. These insights are key to systematically managing collaborative projects aimed at acquiring new technologies.

▼ Background Achieving an environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable development is today a key aspect in many businesses. Accordingly, cross-sector collaborations between businesses and NPOs have on an increasing scale been considered a powerful and unavoidable tool for creating environmental, social, and economical value simultaneously. Problem Relatively little is known about how the underlying dynamics of cross-sector collaborations relate to enhanced value creation. Furthermore, the terminology in previous documentation of cross-sector collaborations has been spread out and inconsistent. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how business-NPO collaborations increase the potential for enhanced value creation. Method The study has been conducted through a comparative case study of three Swedish cross-sector collaborations. Qualitative data has mainly been obtained through interviews. Conclusions The analysis showed that the potential for enhanced value creation increases as collaboration moves from sole-creation of value toward co-creation of value. The study found that achieving co-creation of value is facilitated by (1) an issue-salient approach to stakeholder engagement, (2) achieving mutual dependency, and (3) having sustainability itself as a central aspect of a business’ purpose, strategy, and operations.

▼ This multisite case study sought to build a deeper understanding of community partner experiences with service-learning collaborations. The study examined how community partners involved with service-learning collaborations shape and evaluate these collaborations; what their motivations were when they started participating; why they choose, or choose not to, continue participating; and how service-learning supported their organization's identity. The study was comprised of 11 community partners, including seven nonprofit organizations, one government agency, and three Kindergarten-12th participants. It also included four staff from the three college service-learning centers represented in the study. Using a qualitative design, data were collected through a document review of community partner websites and annual reports, a focus group with college center staff, and 11 individual interviews with community partner representatives. Four major themes evolved from this study: expectations, investment, communication, and echelons of collaboration. Community partners and college center staff discussed how expectations, investment, and communication overlapped, yet contained separate characteristics that made each theme valuable in service-learning collaboration success. Community partners conceptualized varying echelons of collaborations that developed through relationships. Finally, community partners explained how service-learning assisted them with meeting operational needs that were central to their organization's identity. This study contributes to a growing field of literature about community partner experiences with service-learning. The findings from this study build on policies, practices, and research regarding service-learning and how the four major themes are vital in developing and sustaining collaborations.

▼ Increased demands to provide additional services coupled with shrinking state fiscal resources have left American institutions of public higher education to find creative ways to fulfill their roles. Institutions are looking for ways to
become more efficient and cost-effective and are increasingly turning to inter-institutional collaboration as a way to “do more with less.” This study explores the perspective of managers and directors working at higher education institutions engaged in
a long-term inter-institutional partnership on this model of educational collaboration. The qualitative research technique of a case study was used for this research. Interviews with managers and directors working in a research university-community
college partnership in the Midwest and related institutional documents such as strategic plans and cost-share agreements were used for the study. Participants were managers responsible for operational units at the institution such as financial aid,
facilities, admissions, advising, etc. Their responses were recorded and transcribed and subsequently themes were drawn from their responses and matched against a framework of success characteristics. The participants’ responses were analyzed and a
discussion and implications for practice section were produced for each framework category.

▼ Ongoing discussions and changes in the New Zealand innovation system have underlined
the need to improve the level of co-operation between firms and the Crown Research
Institutes (CRIs) in New Zealand. This study contributes to this discussion by assessing
the critical success factors for research co-operations between firms and CRIs. Alongside
the practical value of this study, it also contributes to the development of relationship
marketing theory, where empirical insights into research co-operations between firms
and research institutes is lacking. Specifically, a case study methodology was utilised to
test a conceptual model developed from existing literature in the context of research cooperations
between universities and firms. To do so, similarities and contrasts between
two successful research co-operations and two less successful research co-operations
were examined in the light of 12 previously developed propositions.
Findings from this study highlight the strong similarity of success factors for research cooperations
between firms and universities with those of firms and research institutes.
However, additional themes emerged from this study, notably the concepts of group
diversity and the multidimensionality of trust. The emergence of these additional themes
might be explained by the unique characteristics of the New Zealand innovation system
(remoteness and small size of firms), and the study methodology, which enabled
additional insights.
Overall, this study contributes empirical data and conclusions from a new context to
relationship marketing literature. From a managerial point of view, this study highlights
the importance of a good balance between trust and distrust, a strong bond between the
boundary spanning managers, and satisfactory communication as major determinants of
successful research co-operation between firms and CRIs.

▼ Emerging diseases like the current pandemic, COVID-19, and the increasing number of chronic diseases around the world are putting considerable pressure on the healthcare system, demanding for more services, with higher quality and more efficient. Hence the healthcare system needs to transition towards sustainable healthcare. An approach to achieve a transition towards sustainable healthcare is the Quadruple Aim. It is a practical framework that focuses on improving the health of the population, improving the work-life of care providers, enhancing patients experience and reducing health cost. To implement these four aims, it is necessary the collaboration between multiple disciplines and the implementation of an innovative approach. Open innovation provides a space for transdisciplinary collaboration and innovation to occurs. Hence, this graduation project explores transdisciplinary collaborations in the healthcare sector, focusing on open innovation initiatives. The research question for this study is how to build effective transdisciplinary collaborations in healthcare? This graduation project took place in two countries, the Netherlands and Mexico. In the Netherlands, I realised interview research in eight open innovation initiatives. Later, in Mexico, I did a case study at the Research and Technological Development Unit inside the General Hospital of Mexico ‘Eduardo Liceaga’. Afterwards, I realised a comparative analysis between both studies, followed by a design phase to build effective transdisciplinary collaborations in healthcare. The results of the two studies present a future vision and a future-oriented strategy for the Research and Technological Development Unit to improve collaboration between actors. The future vision contributes to the alignment of the actors involved in the unit so that they can work in the same direction. The strategy is formed by three strategic lines: organisational and project development support, building a knowledge community, and promote and consolidate the unit. These strategic lines aim to guide the actors towards the future vision by suggesting a series of steps. The success of this initiative could contribute to boost innovation in healthcare. A suggestion for future research is on how design can facilitate the implementation of the strategy by considering the collaboration of all the actors present in the unit.

This study takes to subject reports maintained Jean GIONO with more than a hundred creators (drawers, engravers, painters, sculptors), the years twenty until his death in 1970. It sheds light on the origins and the various natures of theseexchanges. At the entrance of the art and artists in the existence of GIONO, we dedicate a part of historic type. It is at most collaborations between the author and the creators that we are interested in a second part tracing, for the majority, theirgenesis. We handle also the various forms of support made by GIONO to multiple artists and certain actions in favour of art.

▼ Poverty and food insecurity are common problems among
low-income households in developing countries. Innovative
interventions in the agricultural sector are regarded as effective
in poverty alleviation and therefore food insecurity. Food
insecurity is defined by London and Anupindi (2012) as a lack of
access to adequate, safe and nutritious food and is closely
associated with poverty. It can ultimately be addressed as part of
a broader strategy to alleviate poverty, which would include
enterprise-led initiatives, inclusive approaches and value chain
adjustments. London and Anuipindi (2012) argued that a study hoping
to demonstrate the relevance and reliability of understanding the
base of pyramid (BoP) as a catalyst to interdependence–based
collaboration, would address the level of agribusiness isolation
and individualism, to reap the benefits of shared advantage,
followed by addressing the interconnected issues of poverty and
food insecurity. This study proposes that small scale farmers can
benefit from interdependence-based
collaborations (IBC) of key role
players from the state, private sector and civil society.
Consequently, this is a qualitative exploratory study, aiming to
seek new insights into the application of inclusive models based on
the IBC within the small farm holding, the private sector, civil
society and government, and thus their impact on the capacitation
of the small-scale farmer and alleviation of poverty.

▼ This thesis studies two key challenges for
offshoring R&D activities to emerging countries in terms of
recruiting and retaining talent: low-quality of fresh Engineering
graduates and high outward mobility of inventors and investigates
organisational strategies to overcome these challenges. This thesis
is a collection of three research papers. The first paper of this
thesis presents research findings from an exploratory study of 12
firms in India to establish how these firms use teaching-focused
collaboration strategies with universities to develop graduates
with prerequisite skills for R&D positions and overcome the low
talent quality challenge. By offering insights into how
teaching-focused I-A
collaborations are operationalised, and the
drivers and challenges for universities and corporations
participating in such alliances, this paper strengthens a
much-neglected dimension of industry-academia (I-A) collaboration
literature: the role of collaborative activities in teaching with
industry. In addition, this paper contributes to the human capital
theory by demonstrating the potential of teaching-focused I-A
collaborations to provide an alternative to the traditional
graduate recruitment and development model: in-house on-the-job
training. The second paper of this thesis further contributes to
this line of research by exploring the HEI-level and institutional
determinants of teaching-focused I-A
collaborations using mixed
methods. Based on 52 interviews and data collected from the
websites of 2,224 HEIs, we show that, among institutional factors,
academic discipline, government support, location, autonomy, and
private ownership drive the involvement of HEIs in teaching-focused
collaborations with industry. Among HEI-level factors, size,
quality, industrial and academic embeddedness influence their
collaborations with industry in teaching. The third paper of this
thesis aims at explaining the factors behind the high outward
mobility of inventors in emerging countries. We claim that the
formal and informal institutional distance of MNCs with the host
countries positively impact the outward mobility of inventors from
subsidiaries. We also posit that experience plays a moderating role
at both the micro level (i.e. at the individual inventor-level) and
macro level (i.e. at the MNC-level). Our empirical analysis refers
to foreign ICT MNCs in India, in the period 1996-2016, and adopts a
novel methodology of tracking mobility of 1,421 inventors on
LinkedIn.

▼ Both employers and out-patient treatment centres are key role players in addressing workplace related substance abuse. On the one hand, employers are directly and indirectly affected by the huge problem of substance abuse. On the other hand, out-patient treatment centres provide, as their core goal, for the treatment of substance abuse and dependency. Due to the extent of the problem of substance abuse, collaborative intervention measures between employers and out-patient treatment centres are essential – especially the involvement of specialists in the treatment of substance abuse. Such a collaboration process requires specific, resolute measures, as well as a structured process in order to ensure sustainability and results.
A networking programme that provides the opportunity to implement this collaborative process is proposed. Sound collaborations indeed provide the foundation to establish the networking programme for combating the problem of substance abuse in the workplace. A collaborative effort to address the problem of substance abuse in the workplace requires not only rallying the strengths and resources of both employers and out-patient treatment centres, but also developing a programme with well-defined processes beneficial to both.
A qualitative research study by means of a grounded theory approach was conducted to explore how networking between employers and out-patient treatment centres might aid in addressing the problem of substance abuse in the workplace.
Article 1 is a literature overview of substance abuse within the workplace and concerns the national directives, legislation requirements and measures of intervention aimed at dealing with the problem. The literature findings reveal clear national directives, legislation requirements and workplace policies, all aimed at providing a well-defined context for employers to manage substance abuse in the workplace. In addition, specialist treatment services are available to assist employers in addressing the problem in the workplace. Internal support structures in the workplace, however, often independently address the problem of
substance abuse without involving the specialists. Literature findings indicate, though, that the personnel involved in the internal support structures are often not equipped to deal effectively with the problem.
Research findings indicate positive treatment outcomes for employees with substance abuse problems. Statistics, however, indicate that the identification of employees with substance abuse problems is limited and that referrals of employees for treatment are infrequent. Underutilisation of out-patient treatment centres is therefore commonplace.
Literature specifically indicates that the majority of employees are moderate drinkers and substance abusers, with only a small number being dependant. It is further indicated that the moderate drinkers and substance abusers account for almost half of the workforce. The critical factor, however, is that these categories of drinkers cause the majority of industrial accidents…

▼ Place marketing has had a dramatic disperse in the late 2119st centuries. It is an important tool to attract tourists, visitors, investors and newcomers. On a global level investors and enterprises use place marketing strategies to attract investors and enterprises. Places, municipalities, cities and regions are using place-marketing strategies to increase the attraction value of the place. Expectations on the application of place marketing are positive economic impact for a place. This study discusses what is happening behind the "scenes" in place marketing of a province. The aim of the study is to investigate the market managers´ approach in the marketing of a place, and what influences a municipality's choice of promoting the specific aspects made today. In the study the province of Värmland has been investigated through interviews with representatives of seven municipalities and the economic association Visit Värmland. The theoretical part of the study describes the different perspectives forming the basics of marketing management. The theoretical concepts in the study provide answers to the aim and questions and are divided into four main categories. These concepts are place strategies, decision making and interactions between place marketing, municipality involvement and the work of place image, identity and branding is studied. In the study an interpretive method has been used, this in the form of interviews with the municipalities and Visit Värmland. The thesis´ theoretical approach includes a hermeneutic and social constructivist approach. The empirical part presents the results of the interviews. The analysis section connects the results with the thesis´ theory. The analysis chapter discusses similarities and differences in the place marketing efforts applied in Värmland. The thesis´ conclusion brings the different parts together and answers the research questions. One of the conclusions consists of the local communities’ lack of involvement in the application of the municipalities’ identities. A second conclusion consist that municipalities’ place marketing strategies is distinguish in a region. Additionally, further research is suggested.

▼ The purpose of this study has been to examine how collaborations between clothing
companies and fashion designers can influence their brands. Our ambition has been to
describe this phenomenon by describing how collaborations can affect and influence
the clothing companies’ brand identity, image and positioning. Furthermore, we want
to describe how these collaborations have changed the fashion industry and what the
future holds for it. We find this topic relevant since collaborations are becoming an
advantage for companies in a competitive industry that is constantly in change. We
have used a qualitative approach for this study, in which we have conducted seven
interviews with different respondents who are related to the fashion industry or with
knowledge of brand management. We choose this qualitative approach to gain a
deeper understanding for our studied topic. In the final chapter we present our
conclusions of this study.

▼ This research covers collaborations in a studio recording environment and the interrelations between conflict and creativity. The aim was to find what the relationship between creativity and conflict is in a studio recording environment and what different ways there are of managing conflict and the purpose of this was to further the understanding of these concepts and their place, for engineers, producers and musicians to make better use of moments of conflict. A literary review was made to outline and present the key elements of collaborations in studio recording, previous research on creativity and definitions of conflict and creativity. Examining this literary review brought forward a few concepts that then came to be the base on which this study lies. An ethnographic study was conducted with the band Baron’s Court. The band was observed while recording an album and later interviewed to share their experience of the recording session and their thoughts about this topic. There were trends and patterns found in the footage from the observation and in the interviews that allowed for elaborations on how different creative approaches can impact the kind of conflict that might occur and the different ways of managing conflict. The trends and patterns were compared to the findings in the literary review.

More and more organizations are turning themselves away from authoritarian management styles
and experiencing the benefits of forming collaborations. Agile teams, non-hierarchical organizations,
“holacracies”, inter-departmental collaborations as well as inter-firm alliances hereby represent
important examples of such alliances between organizations. The increasing awareness of this topic
raises the question how successful collaborations can be fostered. The thesis addresses this research
gap and aims at finding out if a certain tool helps groups to organize themselves and, more
importantly, if they are able to successfully solve tasks independently. For this purpose an experiment
has been conducted to test the effectiveness of this tool. The findings clearly show that groups that
make use of such a tool perform better than those who do not. Statistical analyses also appear to
support this hypothesis.

▼ Following the Cold War, Russian and US research institutions forged new collaborative ties to take advantage of perceived complementarities in conducting scientific research as part of US nonproliferation initiatives. These ties appear to have been successful in the broader nonproliferation context as relatively few Russian nuclear scientists emigrated to perceived rogue states like Iran and North Korea in the years that immediately followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Early on, the research benefits of these ties appeared to be significant. Today, as the Russian science and technology cadre is going through a demographic transition and the Russian state is following a corporatist policy in rebuilding its scientific research and development base, the appropriable benefits associated with continuing these policies for US research partners are less obvious. This assessment is an attempt to gain an empirical understanding of the appropriable benefits from US-Russian research engagement apart from the nonproliferation context. As such, this study examines these
collaborations using an alternative network analysis methodology with reference to a knowledge-based model of research and development generation. To assure tractability, the analysis focuses its attention on a subset of institutions that have been broadly ignored in studies of research collaboration — US national laboratories and their Russian counterparts. The resulting analysis challenges the conventional wisdom of the appropriable virtues of scientific collaboration. For the limited set of relationships examined in this study, this analysis suggests participation in international
collaborations between the largest US national laboratories and their Russian counterparts can actually reduce individual researchers basic research productivity — clearly not a policy goal for a major national research and development establishment. To achieve better appropriability, this finding and its contextual factors are used to demarcate areas of inquiry where Russian-US engagement has an empirical track record of utility and should continue from areas where collaboration has had little success.

▼ The present study investigated integral factors found in general educator and paraeducator collaborative relationships within inclusive classrooms. As new authorizations in the federal guidelines regarding educating students with special needs continue to evolve, general education teachers have to work more directly with paraeducators in their work with students with and without disabilities. Six general education teachers and six paraeducators were interviewed regarding their experiences working alongside one another, and what factors they appreciate in their collaborator in order to feel more productive as educators. Additionally, teachers and paraeducators shared what areas of inclusive education they feel has been a source of struggle, and expressed ideas for how to address these challenges moving forward. Among other factors, both teachers and paraeducators emphasized the importance of communication, respect, and trust in order to build and maintain a successful collaboration. In addition, both educators expressed the desire to continue ongoing education and training to build and develop their capacities as educators. The study provides educators and education officials with an understanding of the current state of inclusive education, and to outline how to develop and maintain productive relationships between general and paraeducators.

▼ Public service partnerships are more common today and necessary for the delivery of quality public services. Research has shown an expansion in the practice of social services
contracting and the challenges they present because client needs are becoming more complex
which requires collaborative partnerships with other agencies. This research project's literature review will focus on what is already known about partnerships, collaboration and the ethical climates in public service organizations. The objective of this research is to perform a case study approach on the Linkages program, the interdepartmental partnership program between the Department of Social Services (DPSS) and the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Due to the heightened scrutiny placed on DCFS caused by the recent deaths of children under their jurisdiction, the purpose of this study will be to examine if DCFS' ethical climate affects the Linkages partnership. The research method will consist of the following: DCFS management will be the unit of analysis, the method of research is qualitative with interviews, and the research tools will consist of secondary data from the Linkages program. The results of this research may suggest further studies about the ethical climate of an organization affecting a collaboration, a
subject which we only have a limited understanding of.

▼ The amount of innovation subsidies for technological development increased vastly over the past decade. However, it still remains unclear for organizations how to increase their chances to access these subsidies. In the current research, the resource dependence view and the sociology of expectations are combined to examine the influence of expectations on the likelihood of receiving innovation subsidies. Three types of expectations are distinguished: scientific expectations, societal expectations, and valorization expectations. Scientific expectations are measured by the amount of scientific publications devoted to a specific technology. Societal expectations measure the amount of newspaper articles in which organizations articulate their expectations towards the specific technology. Valorization expectations measure the amount of patents organizations hold for a specific technology. These expectations indicate the historical achievement of organizations towards a specific technology and will therefore be able to predict their future performances, increasing their likelihood of receiving innovation subsidies. This research examines the Dutch electric vehicle case, which is exemplary for this research since the government supports this technology with the use of innovation subsidy. The data used for the analysis, collected from NL Agency, consists of 23 project groups and a total of 79 unique actors. After a governmental decision committee assessed the projects, 16 of the initial 23 projects were elected to receive subsidy. Since innovation subsidy is allocated to project groups, expectations are aggregated to an actor and a project level to separate organizational effects from project group effects. The results of the logit regression revealed a significant negative influence of expectations on the likelihood of receiving innovation subsidies. This effect is remarkably stronger on the project level compared to the actor level. The results also revealed that organizations with electric vehicle technology as their core business significantly increase their likelihood of receiving innovation subsidies. Recently, the Dutch court of audit criticized Dutch innovation policy for their inconsistencies and difficulties in evaluating their effectiveness and efficiency. In line with their report, this research argues for a more transparent decision process and consistency in policy regulations between different governmental departments. Further research should be performed to analyze what characteristics increase the likelihood of receiving innovation subsidies and to confirm the plausibility of a combined theoretical framework of the resource dependence view and the sociology of expectations.

We study the relationship between policy instruments, innovations through Research andDevelopment (R&D) and technology diffusion in a North-South structure. First, we analyze the impactof the implementation of policy instruments by a Northern country on domestic (process and product)R&D expenditures in a theoretical framework. The North faces competition from a low-cost Southerncountry. The results show that policy instruments increase R&D expenditures except for an importquota. Then, we focus on the issue of technology diffusion from the North to the South. We design adynamic theoretical model in which the North files a patent to increase the monopoly period with anew technology. Previous policy instruments slow down technology diffusion except for an importquota again. Nevertheless, retaliations implemented by the South may accelerate it. Finally, we makean empirical study through econometric estimations of potential determinants of the technologydiffusion from the North to the South measured by patent collaborations. We show that the EuropeanUnion integration of Eastern European countries significantly increases the intensity of patentcollaborations with Western European countries while the effect on the probability of collaboration isnot significant.

The works presented in this thesis use systems of innovation as an analytical framework and aims to study the effects and determinants of science-industry collaborations. Our empirical approach relies on a combination of statistical and econometric analysis of national data, and exploratory surveys within a given territory. To determine the impact of these collaborations on firms' innovation, we consider two measures of innovation: patenting and innovative performance. Taking into accounts two types of academic collaboration, including collaborations with universities and establishments of higher education and public and nonprofit research organizations, it appears that these collaborations have a significant and positive effect on innovation. On the other hand, determinants of science-industry collaborations are analyzed through two surveys: one covering firms belonging to a technopole, and the other conducted among researchers from a university. Both surveys show that firms collaborate with academic organizations mainly to find solutions to problems they face, while researchers are involved in these collaborations to stay abreast of current issues of economic agents. The…

This thesis recounts the development of a meningococcal A vaccine by the Lyon-based company Institut Mérieux between 1963 and 1975. First, we present the disease and the public health threat it posed specifically in sub-Saharan Africa giving rise to an effort to develop a vaccine championed by the French military doctor Lapeyssonnie. We trace the history of the collaboration between the World Health Organisation, the Rockefeller Institute, the International Reference Center for the Meningococcus (Pharo) and the Institut Mérieux, the company that would successfully bring a vaccine to market. We conclude with the massive vaccination programme carried out in Brazil in 1974-75 in which 80 million people were vaccinated against meningitis in an attempt to stop a deadly epidemic of the disease. We analyse this history in terms of the concept of ‘doable problems’ developed by Joan Fujimura. This approach allows us to escape the simple ‘progressive’ narrative of the discovery of a vaccine. Instead, the analysis in terms of levels of work organization and the key concepts of articulation and alignment bring to light a number of interesting aspects, notably the importance of collaboration between groups and individuals as well as implicit assumptions concerning the validity of the different approaches to vaccine production. This analytical approach allows us to bring social aspects to the fore to complement the technical history of the development and use of the vaccine in…

▼ The research reported in this work is one of the first
empirical examinations of politically successful Public/Private
Partnership In Education to come from the policy sciences. As such,
this research builds a theoretical model of political success and
then empirically tests it against data from a national survey. In
building and testing this model, this work employs a mixed research
program of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. In-depth
telephone interviews with select stakeholders from two case study
cities build the context of the work and lead to the development
and clarification of the relevant research concepts. These
qualitative data are supported with quantitative data collected via
a mail survey from a national sample of stakeholders participating
in Public/Private Partnerships In Education. These survey data are
subjected to a Structural Equation Model (SEM) path analysis based
on multivariate regression techniques. The findings support many of
the hypothesized pathways and demonstrate the importance of goal
formation, goal attainment, and leadership to the success of
partnerships in education. As one of the first empirical models of
partnership success coming from the policy sciences, this work
contributes to the literature by combining the elements of
theoretical abstraction with empirical rigor. This research
concludes with implications drawn from the findings and then makes
some recommendations for future work.

▼ An organizationâs behaviors and decisions in a highly regulative institutional industry were not only regulated by regulations and norms but also influenced by the indigenous institutional logics, such as those originally derived from the state, the profession, the family or the religion. Private universities in Taiwan need to compete to seize the legitimacy as well as the resources in the highly competitive and regulative education environment. Government rules and professional norms provide the possible sources of isomorphism on those public and private universities in this education environment; however, the indigenous institutional logics of private universities will demonstrate the heterogeneities on their strategies choices. According to the founding backgrounds and initiative resources, private universities in Taiwan can be classified into two types: those controlled by family or family business groups and those founded by religious organizations. Given that these universities guild by two different institutional logics, i.e., family logic and religion logic, this research argues that the different private universities that guild by the distinctive institutional logics will possibly have specific strategies choices in the highly regulated and competitive education environment.
This research employs institutional logics perspective and social capital theory to address the academia-industry
collaborations (AIC) strategy issue in Taiwan and are interested to know how the indigenous institutional logics in each private university may co-act with the universityâs social capital and thereby influences its inclination and strategic choices on AIC strategy. This research argues that no matter what kind of private university, the social capital of the university President and the Chairman of the Board, and the relational pluralism of the Board of Directors, will play significantly positive impact on AIC strategy.
The findings indicate that the social capital of the President and the heterogeneity of the Board of Directors will generate greater significantly positive impacts on AIC strategy in family-controlled universities than in religion-founded universities. Moreover, the social capital of the Chairman, Chairmanâs identity which is tied to founding organizations, and the control asymmetry of the Board of Directors in religion-founded universities may indicate greater positive impact on AIC strategy than in family-controlled universities.
This research concludes that even private universities that are embedded in a highly regulative and competitive environment, these private universities still have distinctive strategic choice based on its indigenous institutional logics and the following attentional social ties. . The family-controlled private universities prefer to utilize the social capital of President and heterogeneity of the Board of Directors as resources on the strategies. However, the religion-founded private universities prefer to obtain resources through the social ties among their founding organizations…

▼ As interactive technology permeates into the classroom environment, it promises potential educational benefits to children across the world. In the Global South, however, certain communities are largely left out. This includes children with developmental disabilities, who face several social and cognitive challenges. Technology provides them a safe, controlled, and predictable environment for therapeutic and learning interventions. Children from underprivileged backgrounds face several socio-economic challenges towards access to technology that caters to developing 21st century career skills. These skills include fluency in communicating in English, proficiency in computer and internet usage, and ability to work in culturally diverse teams.
In this research, culturally appropriate gesture-based applications were designed, developed, and evaluated for children with developmental disabilities, at two centers of an NGO in New Delhi, called Tamana. The applications focused on social and life skills, where children with little verbal skills could use hand gestures, like pointing, to participate in collaborative tasks or practice buying groceries from a local store. Cross-cultural online collaboration using conversational English was explored with underprivileged children at another NGO in New Delhi, called Deepalaya. The children, who had little technology experience, used a web-based application with a Finnish partner to solve a navigational task. Overall, the outcome of this research is a set of guidelines for designing, developing, introducing, and evaluating technology for underserved children in India.; Vuorovaikutteinen teknologia leviää luokkahuoneisiin ja kantaa mukanaan lupauksen opetuksellisista hyödyistä maailman kaikille lapsille.
