Esta dissertação descreve o movimento quântico de uma partícula numa barreira de potencial parabólica, condicionalmente este sistema é chamado de oscilador invertido. Determinamos estados quânticos semiclássicos como família de estados coerentes generalizados (ECG), sendo construídos através da adaptação do trabalho de Malkin e Man´ko, determinando-se um operador que seja integral do movimento, parametrizado por algumas constantes e reconhecido como operador de aniquilação, cujos auto-estados tem características dos estados comprimidos. Discutimos suas propriedades e observamos que é possível comparar ECG do oscilador invertido com ECG da partícula livre e oscilador harmônico obtidos na literatura. Também é feito um estudo do movimento puramente quântico (tunelamento) nas barreiras de potenciais do oscilador invertido e oscilador invertido truncado, por meio das soluções estacionárias exatas e aproximadas (JWKB), comparando os resultados obtidos em cada situação.

This dissertation describes the motion of a particle in a quantum potential barrier parabolic, this system is conditionally called inverted oscillator. Determined quantum states semi-classics like family generalized coherent states (GCS), being constructed by adapting work Malkin\'s and Man\'ko, determining an operator who is integral of the motion, parameterized for some constants and recognized as annihilation operator, whose eigenstates have characteristics of squeezed states. We discuss its properties and note that it is possible to compare the GCS of inverted oscillator with GCS the particle free and harmonic oscillator obtained in the literature. Also made a study of the movement purely quantum (tunneling) in the barriers potential inverted oscillator and truncated inverted oscillator by means of exact and approximate stationary solutions (JWKB), comparing the results obtained in each situation.

▼ Abstract: The semiclassical propagation comprises the development and application of methods for obtaining approximate solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, assuming the hypothesis that the classical action of the system is much greater than the Planck constant. In this context, the quantum propagator represents an element of central interest, since this quantity corresponds to the probability amplitude for the transition between two states of thephysical system. In a preliminary stage of our work, we employ the generalized concept of coherent states to reformulate the quantum propagator in terms of a path integral. Then, with use of the saddlepoint method, we conduct a detailed derivation of the semiclassical approximation for the propagator corresponding to a wide class of dynamical groups. The application of this formal result depends on the resolution of classical equations of motion under boundary conditions, considering a phase space with doubled dimension. Generally, the search for classical trajectories subject to boundary values demonstrates high computational cost and technical complexity. For this reason, we have developed three distinct semiclassical approximations exclusively determined by initial conditions. In a first situation, we elaborate a propagation method composed of an integral over classical solutions in the doubled phase space. In the second case, with the formulation of the semiclassical time-evolution operator, we eliminate the need for the duplication of the classical degrees of freedom. The third approach, designated as corrected classical propagator, is defined by the contribution of a single trajectory. In order to evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of the obtained semiclassical expressions, we exemplify the application of these theoretical tools for the coherent states of SU(2) and SU(3). At last, we present an extensive discussion on the advantages introduced by the doubled phase space in implementing a semiclassical approximation. In this way, we find that tunneling classical solutions have an important participation in the accurate description of the partial penetration of a wave packet in a finite potential barrier. Furthermore, we show that the quantum phenomenon of reflection by an attractive potential is directly associated to the occurrence of trajectories with non-classical behavior. La propagation des états cohérents est un sujet actif de la recherche de ces dernières décennies. Un état cohérent est la modélisation quantique d'une particule classique. La trajectoire d'une particule chargée dans un champ magnétique fort, i.e. qui ne s'annule pas, est donnée par le mouvement centre guide : il s'agit d'oscillations rapides autour d'un centre virtuel dont la dynamique plus lente suit les lignes de champ magnétique. Le sujet de ma thèse est d'étudier le pendant magnétique de ce résultat. Il est connu que pour des temps courts, c'est à dire bornés en le paramètre semi-classique h, la dynamique d'un état cohérent est donnée par la dynamique classique de la particule associée. Le problème est alors l'étude de la dynamique en temps longs de tels états. Pour des états cohérents de basses énergies, en utilisant des résultats de forme normale et de régularité elliptique magnétique, on prouve le résultat suivant de propagation magnétique en temps longs. Un état cohérent sous un champs magnétique se propage pour des temps de l'ordre de l'inverse de h en une somme d'états cohérents évoluant sur une même trajectoire, mais à des vitesses différentes.

The propagation of coherent states was extensively studied over past decades. A coherent state is the quantum version of a classical particle. The trajectory of a charged particle under strong magnetic field, that is a non-vanishing field, is given by the center guide motion : it is high speeds oscillations around a virtual center that moves slowly along the field lines of the magnetic field. The aim of this thesis is the study of the quantum translation of this. It is well-known that for short times, i.e. bounded times with respect to the semiclassical parameter h, the dynamics of such a state is given by the classical trajectory of the associated particle. The thing is to study the dynamics of coherent states for long times, that are times going to infinite as h goes to 0. For low energy coherent states, using normal form and magnetic elliptical regularity results, we prove the following long time magnetic propagation result. A coherent state under strong magnetic field is propagated as a sum of coherent states following the same dynamics, but with different speeds.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A constructive procedure to build gravitational duals from quantum mechanical models is developed with the aim of studying aspects of the gauge/gravity duality. The construction is simplified as far as possible - the most notable simplification being that quantum mechanical models are considered as opposed to quantum field theories. The simplifications allow a systematic development of the construction which provides direct access to the quantum mechanics / gravity dictionary. The procedure is divided into two parts. First a geometry is constructed from a family of quantum states such that the symmetries of the quantum mechanical states are encoded as isometries of the metric. Secondly, this metric is interpreted as the metric that yields a stationary value for the dual gravitational action. If the quantum states are non-normalisable then these states need to be regularised in order to define a sensible metric. These regularisation parameters are treated as coordinates on the manifold of quantum states. This gives rise to the idea of a manifold “bulk” where the states are normalisable and of a “boundary” where they are not. Asymptotically anti-de Sitter geometries arise naturally from non-normalisable states but the geometries can also be much more general. Time-evolved states are the initial interest. A sensible regularisation scheme for these states is a simple complexification of time so that the bulk coordinate has the interpretation of an energy scale. These two-dimensional manifolds of states are dual to models of dilaton gravity where the dilaton has the interpretation of the expectation value of a quantum mechanical operator. As an example, states time-evolving under an su(1, 1) Hamiltonian is dual to dilaton gravity on AdS2, in agreement with existing work on the AdS2/CFT1 correspondence. These existing results are revisited with the aid of the systematic quantum mechanics / dilaton gravity dictionary and extended. As another example, states time-evolving under an su(2) Hamiltonian are shown to be dual to dilaton gravity on dS2. The higher dimensional analysis is restricted, for computational reasons, to the example of states that possess full Schr¨odinger symmetry with and without dynamical mass. The time and spatial coordinates are complexified in order to both regularise the states and maintain the state symmetries as bulk isometries. Dictionaries are developed for both examples. It is shown that submanifolds of these state manifolds are studied in the existing AdS/CFT and AdS/NRCFT literature.

▼ This thesis covers several topics in optical quantum computation. A quantum computer is a computational device which is able to manipulate information by performing unitary operations on some physical system whose state can be described as a vector (or mixture of vectors) in a Hilbert space. The basic unit of information, called the qubit, is considered to be a system with two orthogonal states, which are assigned logical values of 0 and 1. Photons make excellent candidates to serve as qubits. They have little interactions with the environment. Many operations can be performed using very simple linear optical devices such as beam splitters and phase shifters. Photons can easily be processed through circuit-like networks. Operations can be performed in very short times. Photons are ideally suited for the long-distance communication of quantum information. The great difficulty in constructing an optical quantum computer is that photons naturally interact weakly with one another. This thesis first gives a brief review of two early approaches to optical quantum computation. It will describe how any discrete unitary operation can be performed using a single photon and a network of beam splitters, and how the Kerr effect can be used to construct a two photon logic gate. Second, this work provides a thorough introduction to the linear optical quantum computer developed by Knill, Laflamme, and Milburn. It then presents this author’s results on the reliability of this scheme when implemented using imperfect photon detectors. This author finds that quantum computers of this sort cannot be built using current technology. Third, this dissertation describes a method for constructing a linear optical quantum computer using nearly orthogonal coherent states of light as the qubits. It shows how a universal set of logic operations can be performed, including calculations of the fidelity with which these operations may be accomplished. It discusses methods for reducing and correcting errors and recovering from failed operations. Lastly it describes an analysis of the long distance transmission of the coherent state qubits and shows how transmission errors can be corrected. ▼ This work focuses on non-compact groups and their applications to quantum gravity, mainly through the use of tensor operators. Non-compact groups appear naturally if the space-time is of Lorentzian signature, but can also have an important role in the Euclidean case, as will be shown. First, the mathematical theory of tensor operators for a Lie group is recast in a new way which is used to generalise the Wigner–Eckart theorem to non-compact groups. The result relies on the knowledge of the recoupling theory between finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional irreducible representations of the group; here the previously unconsidered cases of the 3D and 4D Lorentz groups are investigated in detail. As an application, the Wigner–Eckart theorem is used to generalise the Jordan–Schwinger representation of SU(2) to both groups, for all representation classes. Next, the results obtained for the 3D Lorentz group are applied to (2+1) Lorentzian loop quantum gravity to develop an analogue of the well-known spinorial approach used in the Euclidean case. Tensor operators are used to construct observables and to generalise the Hamiltonian constraint introduced by Bonzom and Livine (2012) for 3D gravity to the Lorentzian case. The Ponzano–Regge amplitude is shown to be a solution of this constraint by recovering the (opportunely generalised) Biedenharn–Elliott relations. Finally, the focus is shifted on the intertwiner space based on SU(2) representations, widely used in loop quantum gravity. When working in the spinorial formalism, it has been shown that the Hilbert space of n-valent intertwiners with fixed total area is a representation of U(n). Here it is shown that the full space of all n-valent intertwiners forms an irreducible representation of the non-compact group SO*(2n). This fact is used to construct a new kind of coherent intertwiner state (in the sense of Perelomov). Although some of these states were known already, the majority of them was not until now; moreover, the underlying group structure was completely unknown. Hints of how these coherent states can be interpreted in the semi-classical limit as convex polyhedra are provided.

▼ We present a semiclassical study of discrete quantum mechanical Hamiltonians using continuous Semi-Classical Initial Value Representation (SC-IVR) methods. This is accomplished using a generalized “Mapping” algorithm that is based on the representation of the quantum number by a continuous action variable that extends from −∞ to ∞. We demonstrate the procedure in a Herman Kluk IVR (HK-IVR) study of nonadiabatic dynamics in a model avoided crossing system. The algorithm can also be systematically extended to give an accurate representation of the dynamical behavior of a quantum system characterized by non-cartesian degrees of freedom. We present a HK-IVR treatment of such a system, comprising a linear rotor molecule in static electric and pulsed laser field. The mapping procedure is shown to make accurate predictions about the dynamical behavior of such non-cartesian systems. Finally, we present an analysis of the recently developed Semi-Classical Coherent State Path Integral (SC-CSPI) propagator. The numerical implementation of the propagator involves a “root” search problem in “complex” phase space, typically achieved via the Newton- Raphson technique. In our application of the method studying the absorption spectra of Iodine, we demonstrate the superior numerical efficiency of the SC-CSPI propagator as compared to contemporary IVR techniques. We further demonstrate that the “roots” or “branches” are intimately connected with the recurrences of classical motion in the system, each “branch” being characteristic of a particular recurrence. Unfortunately, finding these classical recurrences or their corresponding “branches” in multidimensions is a prohibitively difficult task. We propose an alternative root search procedure to tackle this problem, where one gradually builds up the solution by perturbatively tuning the parameters characterizing the system. The procedure is demonstrated for a chain of six anharmonic oscillators with harmonic nearest neighbor coupling. This system has been known to exhibit the formation of “localized” vibrational modes known as “discrete breathers”. Using the “perturbative” root search procedure we build up these breather modes by slowly varying the intersite coupling. Our results suggest that the SC-CSPI propagator may serve well as a viable alternative to SC-IVR methods.
