We have developed a predictive model, by means of a group contribution method, in order to predict with accuracy, the behavior of petroleum fluids. The model called PPR78 uses the Peng-Robinson equation of state and Van der Waals-type mixing rules with a temperature dependent binary interaction parameter kij. Such mixing rules are identical to those obtained by combining at constant packing fraction, a Van Laar-type excess function and a cubic equation of state. The first part of this study consisted in extending the application of the model PPR78 to systems containing water, alkenes and hydrogen, by defining six new elementary groups. The phase equilibria of binary systems involving these components are accurately described by the model, especially for the phase diagrams of Type I and Type II. In the second part, all the group parameters of the original model were re-fitted by using the phase equilibrium data, as well as the mixing property data. The advantage of this new model E-PPR78 is that it is capable to correlate the phase equilibria with an accuracy which is equivalent to the original model and it produces a very clear improvement in the prediction of excess enthalpies and excess heat capacities.

The development of the predictive E-PPR78 model, based on a contribution group method, has been undertaken since ten years to predict accurately the behaviour of multi-component systems. This model lies on the Peng-Robinson equation of state with classical Van der Waals mixing rules. It uses a unique binary interaction parameter, kij, which is temperature dependant. To enable the E-PPR78 model to predict the behavior of natural gases, three new groups are added: carbon monoxide, helium and argon. It was necessary to build an experimental database, as exhaustive as possible, containing phase equilibrium and enthalpies of mixing data for binary systems formed by these groups and those defined in previous studies and present in natural gases. After a description of the classification scheme of Van Konynenburg and Scott, the E-PPR78 model is described. The third part is about the addition of the three new groups to the model. It clearly appears that the E-PPR78 model is able to predict the fluid-phase behavior of natural gases over wide ranges of temperatures and pressures

A group contribution method allowing the estimation of the temperature dependent binary interaction parameter (kij) for the Peng Robinson equation of state is proposed. Doing so, a new predictive thermodynamic model is born. Twelve groups are defined and it is now possible to estimate the kij for any mixture containing alkanes, aromatics, naphthenes and CO2, whatever the temperature. The model, called PPR78 (Predictive 1978, Peng Robinson equation of state), gives a good description of the phase diagrams and critical locus of binary systems. This predictive model can be successfully employed for the simulation of many mixtures such as natural gases and petroleum fluids. Using a high pressure visual cell, vapor liquid equilibria measurements were made for two binary systems: CO2 methylcyclopentane and CO2 isopropylcyclohexane. For these two systems, no literature data were available. Finally, we measured bubble and dew points on a five component hydrocarbon mixture in the presence of CO2

▼ The purpose of this study discusses the cage net volume deformation under the wave-current
interaction. The research contents the hydrodynamic physical model test according to the ocean data of the site condition in Siaoliouciou. We make weights system and sinkers system which are 1:30 scale model. We design the experiment condition contained monsoon-wave and typhoon-wave and established a single cage and a double cage model system, then discussed the differences between the sinkers system and collar system under the various conditions of in nonlinear wave and current. The volume deformation of cage net and the tension force of cable were observed and measured. It expected to locate the three-dimension coordinate of the cage net under the wave-current
interaction.
The research results are as follows. The cage net volume deformation is drive by current. About the cage net volume deformation, the sinkers system is more steady than the weights system, though improving the volume two systems are about the same. Let the sinkers submerge in the ocean, and it can reduce the impact of typhoon waves effectively. However , the structure of the sinkers system is too heavy, so the maximum tension of the anchor that the sinkers system is larger than the weights system.

Multispectral cameras sample the visible and/or the infrared spectrum according to narrow spectral bands. Available technologies include snapshot multispectral cameras equipped with filter arrays that acquire raw images at video rate. Raw images require a demosaicing procedure to estimate a multispectral image with full spatio-spectral definition. In this manuscript we review multispectral demosaicing methods and propose a new one based on the pseudo-panchromatic image. We highlight the influence of illumination on demosaicing performances, then we propose pre- and post-processing normalization steps that make demosaicing robust to acquisition properties. Experimental results show that our method provides estimated images of better objective quality than classical ones.Multispectral images can be used for texture classification. To perform texture analysis, we extend local binary pattern operators to multispectral texture images at the expense of increased memory and computation requirements. We propose to compute texture descriptors directly from raw images, which both avoids the demosaicing step and reduces the descriptor size. In order to assess classification on multispectral images we have proposed the first significant multispectral database of close-range textures in the visible and near infrared spectral domains. Extensive experiments on this database show…

Two main parts structured this PhD thesis. In the first part (descriptive work, SU.VI.MAX and NutriNet-Santé cohorts), we identified factors that influenced vitamin D status, some of which being modifiable (e.g. moderate sun exposure, physical activity, normal weight) and as such constitute interesting targets for public health policies. Using these determinants, we developed the VDIP score in order to simply identify adults at risk of vitamin d insufficiency. Finally, the study dealing with vitamin D-related knowledge showed that the primary sources of vitamin D-related information were the physicians and the media and that some confusion existed regarding the sources and the proven/unproven health effects of vitamin D.In a second part (etiological work, nested case-control study, SU.VI.MAX cohort), we showed that a higher vitamin D status (within the low-to-moderate range of plasma 25(OH)D concentrations observed in this…

▼ Flavour is widely accepted as a major determinant of consumer satisfaction, so factors that influence flavour quality are of great interest to both food scientists and the manufacturing industry globally. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) play an important role in characterising the unique flavour profile of foods. However non-volatile matrix solutes are capable of selectively binding these compounds and modifying their availability for perception during consumption. The impact of carbohydrates and lipids has been extensively studied which has led to a comprehensive understanding of the principles governing their
interaction with flavour volatiles. Proteins, in comparison, remain poorly understood. This is due mainly to their structural diversity and resulting range of available binding mechanisms which can change in response to environmental conditions such as those encountered during food processing. Myofibrillar proteins are compositionally significant components of skeletal muscle tissue and play a critical role in defining the textural properties of processed meat products including burgers and sausages. To determine their influence on flavour, a series of model solutions were analysed and partition coefficients Kg-m calculated to enable changes in compound volatility to be measured. Eleven different flavour volatiles were evaluated, including a number of plant derived bioactive compounds not previously considered in binding studies. Partition coefficients were measured using static headspace-gas chromatography (SH-GC) methods partnered with indirect phase ratio variation (PRV) techniques. The retention effect of myofibrillar proteins was quantified by reporting the percentage change in Kg-m following the introduction of protein extract into the system. Myofibrillar proteins were obtained from a series of extractions of pork loin fillet with sodium phosphate buffer. The process yielded 58.6 mg/g of muscle which accounted for an approximate recovery rate of 60% of total available proteins. Subsequent instrumental analysis confirmed that at 35°C, a 2 mg/mL protein extract was capable of binding all volatile compounds, to various degrees, reducing their volatility, or headspace concentration, and therefore the availability of each compound for sensory perception. The greatest effect was recorded for isomers citral and neral, with 55.9% and 59.1% retention reported respectively, followed by ethyl hexanote which gave 36.7% retention. Thymol and carvacrol followed closely, with 28.6% and 33.7% retention respectively. Data collected throughout the study strongly indicates that myofibrillar proteins interact predominantly via weak reversible associations that are enhanced with increasing levels of flavour compound hydrophobicity. Both SH-GC and PRV are commonly utilised in flavour
interaction investigations and are known to have areas of limitation that must be considered throughout application. During instrumental method development however, a significant obstacle was encountered which had not been documented…

▼ Numerous screening techniques have been developed in recent years for genome-wide association studies (GWASs) (Moore et al., 2010). In this thesis, a novel model-free screening method was developed and validated by an extensive simulation study. Many screening methods were mainly focused on main effects, while very few studies considered the models containing both main effects and
interaction effects. In this work, the
interaction effects were fully considered and three different methods (Pearson’s Correlation
Coefficient, Partial Correlation, and Conditional Mutual Information) were tested and their prediction accuracies were compared.
Pearson’s Correlation
Coefficient method, which is a direct
interaction screening (DIS) procedure, tended to incorrectly screen
interaction terms as it omits the relationship between main effects and
interaction effects. To this end, we proposed to use two new
interaction screening procedures, namely Partial Correlation
Interaction Screening (PCIS) method and Conditional Mutual Information
Interaction Screening (CMIIS) method. The Partial Correlation (PC) could measure association between two variables, while adjusting the effect of one or more extra variables. The Conditional Mutual Information (CMI) is the expected value of the mutual information (MI) of two random variables given the value of a third (Wyner, 1978), while MI is a measure of general dependence. Finally, an illustration and performance comparison of the three screening procedures by simulation studies were made and these procedures were applied to real gene data.

We proposed in this thesis an original contribution to the field of variable clustering in linear regression through a model-based approach. This contribution was made via a hierarchical modeling of the regression coefficients as random variables drawn from a mixture of Gaussian distributions with equal variances. Parameter estimation in the proposed model was shown to be challenging since the classical EM algorithm could not apply. We then developped a more efficient algorithm for parameter estimation, through the use of the SEM-Gibbs algorithm. Along with this computational improvement, we also enhanced our model to allow variable selection. Given the good predictive performances of the CLERE method compared to standard techniques for dimension reduction, we considred an extension of the latter to binary response data. This extension was studied in the context of Probit regression. We generalized our model by relaxing the assumption of equal variance for the components in the mixture of Gaussians. The performances of this generalization were compared to those of the initial model under different scenarios on simulated data. This research led to the development of the R package clere which implements most of the algorithms described in this thesis.

This work proposes two complementary design flows allowing the broadcast of a partial bitstream to a set of identical Partially Reconfigurable Regions (PRRs). These two design flows are applicable with FPGAs - Xilinx. The first one called ADForMe (Automatic DPPR Flow For Multi-RPRs Architecture) allows the automation of the traditional flow of Xilinx RDP through the automation of the floorplanning phase. This floorplanning is carried out by the AFLORA (Automatic Floorplanning For Multi-RPRs Architectures) algorithm which we have designed that allows the same allocation of these RPRs in terms of geometric shape taking into account the technological parameters of the FPGA and the architectural parameters of the design in order to allow the relocation of bitstream. The second proposed flow aims to promote the 1D and 2D relocation technique in order to allow the broadcast of a partial bitstream (functionality) to a set of RPRs for a system configuration. Therefore, this flow allows optimizing the size of the bitstream memory. We have also proposed suitable hardware architecture capable of performing this broadcast. The experimental results have been performed on the recent Xilinx FPGAs and have proved the speed of execution of our AFLORA algorithm as well as the efficiency of the results obtained by the application of the automation…

This doctoral work has been done in an industrial environment where the mainactivities were reverse engineering for vulnerability research and security properties verification on binary programs. The first part of this doctoral work focuses on the collection and sharing of the industrial problems when analyzing binary programs. Based on these issues, a binary dynamic analysis framework has been developed and formalized. Real examples of use are then presented, such as the detection of opaque predicates in branch conditions. Finally, a new automatic approach for deobfuscation of binary code protected by virtualization is presented combining features of the framework as well as those of other tools.

▼ Farmers in SSA continue to obtain low yields (less than two tonnes per hectare) despite the high potential yield (about 14 tonnes per hectare) that can be achieved. The development of improved and high yielding hybrids can help to reduce this gap significantly. Characterisation of maize inbred lines is crucial for developing high yielding maize hybrids. A line x tester analysis involving 38 crosses generated by crossing 19 maize inbred lines with two tropical testers was conducted for different agronomic traits. The maize inbred lines used in this study were sampled from a bi-parental inbred population developed by a shuttle breeding program at University of KwaZulu Natal. The objectives of the study were to estimate combining ability of inbred lines and hybrids, to evaluate the performance of the hybrids in agronomic traits and grain yield, to calculate breeding gains achieved through selection and to deduce the relationship between secondary traits and grain yield. In total 50 hybrids, including control hybrids were evaluated in the trial. The hybrids were planted in the summer season of 2014/15 under rainfed conditions at three sites, Cedara, Dundee and Ukulinga in five metre row plots and replicated twice in 5X10 alpha lattice design under recommended agronomic practices for maize. Data was collected using a CIMMYT protocol and subjected to statistical analyses using ANOVA and REML packages in GENSTAT 14th edition and PATHSAS macros in SAS 9.3 computer software. The results showed varying performances between the lines, crosses and control hybrids at the different sites. Inbred lines DMSR-8, DMSR-13, DMSR-30 and DMSR-35-5 were shown to have good combining ability while DMSR-21 and DMSR-73 showed positive specific combining ability. Selection across sites improved grain yield by 9.32% over the population mean and by 10.22% and 12.73% at Cedara and Dundee, respectively over commercial hybrids. Ranking by mean yield identified hybrids 15XH16, 15XH20 and 15XH28 at Cedara, Dundee and Ukulinga respectively, as the highest yielding hybrids for that particular environment. GGE biplot and AMMI analyses revealed that
hybrids 15XH10, 15XH13, 15XH20, 15XH25, 15XH28, 15XH34 and 15XH39 were the most stable hybrids. Secondary traits were found to be associated with grain yield potential of hybrids. Ear prolificacy had the most important relationship with grain yield and was recommended for selection in grain yield improvement programs.

▼ Increasing demand for antibiotics, and increasing antibiotic resistance, have led to the investigation of possible novel antibiotics by many researchers. For this purpose, experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out to draw scientists’ attention to antimicrobial peptides and their
interaction with the surface of bacterial membranes. Their ability to disrupt the functioning of bacterial membranes has been probed from different perspectives. The most desirable antimicrobial peptides are those which do not harm plant or animals’ membranes but which disrupt bacterial membranes. It has been found that some cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMPs) satisfy these requirements. CAMPs interacting with the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria and the membrane of gram-positive bacteria have been studied recently. We conduct a Molecular Dynamics simulation study of peptide-peptide interactions in physiological solutions and investigate the mechanism of CAMPs aggregation, since aggregation of the peptides could precede their
interaction with the membrane. Different algorithms are applied to calculate the potential mean force of the aggregation process of peptides to select the most efficient one. Also, we have run isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments to measure the peptide-peptide binding enthalpy. The particular CAMP studied is HHC-36, a peptide selected by high throughput screening which has nine amino acid residues and charge +5 in natural units. We examined our chosen simulation techniques, i.e., the OFR and the FR methods, analysis methods, i.e., bincrossing and binpassing methods, and with a toy model of sodium-sodium in bulk water observed attractive interactions between two similarly charged ions. We proposed a simpler version of McMillan-Mayer theory of solution using a semi-grand canonical ensemble. We extended the theory and derived the enthalpy second virial
coefficient from the semi-grand osmotic second virial
coefficient and linked the MD simulation results to the ITC experimental results. We found a good agreement between the theoretical and the experimental values of the osmotic pressure second virial
coefficient and the enthalpy second virial coefficients for the system of binary benzene-benzene in water. We carried out a series of MD simulations to calculate the PMF of HHC-36 binary peptide-peptide interactions in water at the two temperatures of 295 and 325 K, extracted the osmotic pressure second virial coefficients, and estimated the theoretical enthalpy second virial
coefficient, which has factor of 40 discrepancy from the experimental enthalpy second virial
coefficient obtained from the ITC experiments. Studies have shown that the ITC experiments have statistical errors caused by the ITC machine which we do not have the option to change. On the theoretical side, we hope to reduce the discrepancy between theory and experiment by reducing the simulation statistical error bars, by performing longer simulation runs and enhancing the sampling.

▼ Brittleness of a polymeric material has a direct relationship with the material's performance and furthermore shares an inverse relationship with that material's flexibility. The concept of flexibility of materials has been understood but merely explained with a hand-waving manner. Thus, it has never been defined by a calculation, thereby lacking the ability to determine a definite quantitative value for this characteristic. Herein, an equation is presented and proven which makes determining the value of flexibility possible. Such an equation could be used to predict a material's flexibility prior to testing it, thus saving money and valuable time for those in research and in industry. Substantiating evidence showing the relationship between flexibility of polymers and their respective mechanical properties is presented. Further relating the known tensile properties of a given polymer to its flexibility is expanded upon by proving its relationship
to the linear
coefficient of thermal expansion for each polymer. Additionally, determining flexibility for polymers whose chemical structures have been compromised by respective solvents has also been investigated to predict a solvent's impact on a polymer after exposure. Polymers examined through literature include polycarbonate (PC), polystyrene (PS), teflon (PTFE), styrene acrylonitrile (SAN), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), poly(ethersulfone) (PES), low density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). Further testing and confirmation was made using PC, PS, ABS, LDPE, PP, and PMMA.

▼ During the business cycle, how the firms' marketing expenses affect the stock returns vary with economy condition. Although prior studies have focused on how change in advertising and research and development (R&
D) affect firms during recessions, those studies ignored the
interaction between advertising and R&
D. Besides, prior studies in the economics field find that the macroeconomics factors will affect firm performance. Therefore, this paper investigates which macroeconomics factor will affect firms spending on advertising and R&
D to increase stock return of firms during recessions based on controlling the
interaction between advertising and R&
D.
We match the sample of NYSE-, AMEX-, and NASDAQ-listed firms that are specified as ordinary common shares with monthly returns from the Center for Research in Securities Prices (CRSP) and with advertising and R&
D from the yearly merged COMPUSTAT data for 1990 to 2010. In addition, we use the Markov switching model to identify economy condition. Meanwhile we use the portfolio analysis to classify the firms into four portfolios and though the macroeconomic model to discuss which factors impact the excess return. This study finds that controlling the condition of R&
D-intensive, the default spread and growth in money supply will both affect high advertising firms, more than low advertising firm in recessions. Moreover, controlling the condition of advertising-intensive, the default spread and growth in money supply will both affect high R&
D firms more than low R&
D firms in recessions. These consequences may result from that during the recession, the default spread will increase and the same time the investors will not prefer high advertising and R&
D firms (risky assets). On the other hand, when government implements expansionary monetary policy, investors will prefer high advertising and R&
D firms.
In summary, this study discuss how the macroeconomic factors affect the excess return of portfolio during recessions based on controlling the
interaction between advertising and R&
D. Firms could use these results to improve the performances and increase the stock returns by adjusting their spending on advertising and R&
D during recessions.

▼ In this thesis different models are considered which can deal with the
interaction between pile foundations and structures. This to find the most efficient way to model pile foundation structures whereby both the efficiency of the design as building process are taken into account. This are the models
D-Pile (geotechnical), Scia Engineer (structural) and Plaxis (geotechnical). Therefore a study is done to the effects which play a role by pile foundation structures and or the different models can deal with this. The study focused on displacement piles which is the most used pile type in the Dutch building practice. The reference project which is used for this study is the foundation structure of a power pylon (as shown in figure 1) To get trust in the models after this study a verification is done for single piles which were subjected to an axial (compression and tension) and horizontal load on top. For piles loaded by axial compression the load-settlement behaviour is compared with the behaviour as one can determine according to NEN 9997-1 (EC7). Hereby one can see that the fact that the numerical model Plaxis does not take into account the installation effects (densification and displacement of the soil around the pile) leads to a deviating load-settlement behaviour in comparison with the behaviour of the other models which are based on empirical relationship (pile tests). This behaviour can be improved by additional tricks like volume expansions of the soil around the pile, but this is not taken into account in this thesis. So therefore Plaxis was not taken into account furthermore. After the verification of single piles, the verification was expanded for pile groups which was subjected to the same loading conditions. Hereby variations were made in the centre-to-centre distances of the piles and the thickness of the cap on top. Hereby can be noticed that the fact that
D-Pile cannot take into account the bending stiffness of the pile cap can lead to an unrealistic distribution of pile forces in case of a thin plate with large centre-to-centre distances of the piles. On the other hand the additional settlement of a pile group in comparison with a single pile cannot be taken into account with the chose way of modeling in Scia Engineer, but only by
D-Pile. The behaviour of pile groups loaded by tension can differ significant from single piles This effect has to be taken into account manually in both models. For a horizontally loaded group there is a significant difference in results in the bending moments in the pile heads and the displacement of the pile cap, which is caused by the different horizontal springs used in the models. Combining all these knowledge leads to the conclusion that Scia Engineer seems to be the best model for the design of the foundation structure of the power pylon. Hereby both the efficiency of the design process and the structure are taken into account. The reassons for this are: Besides
D-Foundation which is a tool to determine the bearing capacity only one model is needed to analyse the…

▼ Being able to measure the fiber orientation distribution in the injection-molded composite parts is of considerable importance, since the distribution locally affects the mechanical and physical properties of the final part such as its strength, impact toughness, internal stress, and fatigue properties. In this study, I experimentally measured the fiber orientations in two injection-molded specimens produced from short-glass-fiber-reinforced plastic using plate-shaped cavities with and without a weld-line. As the results, the following technical findings were obtained. (1) The fiber orientation distributions were observed directly using a high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) X-ray computed tomography (CT) system XVA-160α. A simple method based on a series of X-ray CT images was developed to measure the orientation angles of the individual fibers. Thus, precise 3D calculations of the fiber orientations related to the second-order orientation tensor components were performed to obtain a consistent description of the observed behavior. This thesis explored a novel and powerful technique for observing and measuring fiber orientation, which can be used to test fiber orientation predictions. (2) I proposed a developed fiber interaction model that has been introduced a fiber dynamics simulation in order to obtain a global fiber interaction coefficient. This supposed that the coefficient is a function of the fiber concentration, aspect ratio, and angular velocity. This model has been developed and incorporated into simulations of injection molding with the emphasis on predicting final orientation pattern. The simulation was exercised for a variety of cases and showed a good agreement with experimental results. (3) A study on surface properties of embossed decorative injection-molded parts by experimental methods and numerical analysis was carried out. Herein, the behaviour of fountain flow in cavity filling on surface quality was discussed in detail. Finally, an approach to producing a favorable surface quality by considering the fiber orientation prediction of final part was proposed.
The thesis includes 6 chapters as follows:Chapter 1 "Introduction" introduces about how interesting Fiber reinforced plastic composite is, how important fiber orientation in FRP is,and about motivation, major findings in this thesis. Chapter 2 "Measurement Of Fiber Orientation Distribution In Injection-Molded Short-Glass-Fiber Composites" explains about experimental method to measure the fiber orientation distribution. Chapter 3 "Fundamental Orientation Theory" gives the information of fiber orientation theory and show how to model the fiber-fiber interaction in fiber-reinforced plastic. Chapter 4 "Numerical Approach For Fiber Orientation In Injection-Molded Short-Fiber/Thermoplastic Composites" introduces a numerical approach for fiber orientation in injection-molded short-fiber/thermoplastic composites using proposed model described in chapter 3. Chapter 5 "A Numerical And Experimental Study On Surface Properties Of Embossed Decorative…

This work concerns the modeling, at the molecular level, of the interaction between carbonaceous particles of nanometric size and the electromagnetic radiation. The goal is to improve our understanding of the optical properties of soot particles, to better quantify the influence of soot on the atmosphere and on climate change. The study of the interaction between radiation and fresh soot particles was carried out using the point dipole interaction method; it has been shown that: i) the mass absorption coefficient (MAC) of these soot nanoparticles may significantly depend on their atomistic details, especially between 200 and 350 nm; ii) the MAC depends on whether the heart of the carbonaceous particle is occupied or not by graphite planes; iii) an analytical model is not suitable for calculating the MAC of carbonaceous nanoparticles having structural defects. In addition, quantum chemical methods have been used to characterize the ageing of soot. The results obtained are i) NO, Cl, and HCl are physisorbed on a perfect carbonaceous surface whereas on a defective surface, these species are chemisorbed and lead to a modification of the surface; ii) on a carbonaceous surface, the presence of adsorbed Cl atoms leads to a strong trapping of the surrounding water molecules. This may be related to the highly hydrophilic nature of soot emitted during fires in…

The aim of this work is to characterize the influence of two kinds of obstacles, sills and macro-roughnesses, on the flow inside a vertical slot fishway (VSF) and the behavior of several species of fish. Another objective is to study a technical solution to allow the passage of small fish species, which take the form of flexible cylinders placed in the jet at the entrance of each pool of the VSF. A hydraulic characterization is made by experimental measurements of the water level in each pool with acoustic sensors and by measurements of three-dimensional velocity components with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). The data acquired by these measurements are then used to define a predictive law that takes into account the presence of sills or macro-roughnesses, to help the design of devices that are as efficient as possible. Unsteady RANS and LES three-dimensional numerical simulations of the flow allow performing a careful volume analysis of the turbulence…

▼ This project focuses on creating a system for human body segmentation meant to be used for pose estimation. Recognizing a human figure in a cluttered environment is a challenging problem. Current systems for pose estimation assume that there are no objects around the person, which restricts their use in a real world scenario. This project is based on new advances in deep learning, a field of machine learning that can tackle tough vision problems. The system contains a whole pipeline for training and using a system to estimate the pose of a human. It contains a data generation module that creates the training data for the deep learning module. The deep learning module is the main contribution of this work and provides a robust method for segmenting the body parts of a human. Finally, the project includes a pose estimation module which focuses on reducing the detailed output of the deep learning module into a pose skeleton.

▼ Classically, the endocrine vitamin D system is essential for maintaining calcium and phosphate homeostasis. Sufficient vitamin D levels promote bone health and prevent osteopathies, such as rickets and osteomalacia. However, the discovery of an intracrine vitamin D pathway alluded to other roles for vitamin D in regulating the immune system. Specifically, research on the innate immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection demonstrated a vitamin D-mediated antimicrobial response. Here, we continued to investigate the role of vitamin D in the immunobiology of mycobacterial infection. In Chapter 1, we studied mycobacterial infection using leprosy as a disease model. We demonstrated that induction of the type I IFN gene program during Mycobacterium leprae infection is an active immune evasion mechanism used to subvert the vitamin D-dependent antimicrobial response through the suppression of the vitamin D activating enzyme, CYP27B1. Moreover, our studies comparing macrophages associated with each of the two poles of the leprosy disease spectrum—lepromatous leprosy (L-lep) and tuberculoid leprosy (T-lep)—provided additional insight into susceptibility versus resistance to infection. T-lep-associated macrophages with elevated CYP27B1 expression and activity at baseline were resistant to type I IFN-mediated suppression and capable of inducing an antimicrobial response, whereas L-lep-associated macrophages were not. Taken together, these results demonstrate the importance of control of the vitamin D-dependent antimicrobial response in the host-pathogen interaction. In Chapter 2, we focused on markers of host defense to identify factors which confer protection against mycobacterial infection. These studies revealed that IL-32 is associated with IL-15- and IFN-γ-induced host defense networks. IL-32 is also necessary and sufficient to induce CYP27B1 activity and the downstream antimicrobial response. These studies pinpoint IL-32 as an important regulator of vitamin D-dependent host defense. Finally, in Chapter 3, we studied the effects of 1,25D on the iron regulatory protein, hepcidin, which regulates iron homeostasis by binding ferroportin and preventing the export of iron. Our results showed that 1,25D suppresses hepcidin expression in monocytes. These findings are important in the context of mycobacteria which are intracellular pathogens that rely on scavenging iron from the host to survive. Therefore, regulation of hepcidin may be another key battleground in the host-pathogen interaction.

In this thesis, we have investigated the human object interaction recognition by using the skeleton data and local depth information provided by RGB-D sensors. There are two main applications we address in this thesis: human object interaction recognition and abnormal activity recognition. First, we propose a spatio-temporal modeling of human-object interaction videos for on-line and off-line recognition. In the spatial modeling of human object interactions, we propose low-level feature and object related distance feature which adopted on on-line human object interaction recognition and abnormal gait detection. Then, we propose object feature, a rough description of the object shape and size as new features to model human-object interactions. This object feature is fused with the low-level feature for online human object interaction recognition. In the temporal modeling of human object interactions, we proposed a shape analysis framework based on low-level feature and object related distance feature for full sequence-based off-line recognition. Experiments carried out on two representative benchmarks demonstrate the proposed method are effective and discriminative for human object interaction analysis. Second, we extend the study to abnormal gait detection by using the on-line framework of human object interaction classification. The experiments conducted following state-of-the-art settings on the benchmark shows the effectiveness of proposed method. Finally, we collected a multi-view human object interaction dataset involving…

▼ Pain experienced as a result of a disabling medical condition is a frequent problem in the clinical community and can often be present in any individual with this kind of health concern. Such pain is typically characterized by severe implications reflected on both a person‘s personal life, as well as on a country‘s health and economic systems. Research on pain has revealed that patients not only experience several types of pain that could prove to be challenging to address, but also that each individual can interpret the same type, location and severity of this pain in different subjective ways, making the need for more effective pain measurement methods an imperative and troublesome effort. In retrospect, the healthcare field is currently trying to enhance the available medical methods with alternatives that would be more efficient in providing accurate pain assessment. Most efforts revolve around traditional methods of measuring pain characteristics, which typically involve the 2-Dimensional (2-D) representation of the human body, often used to collect information regarding the type and location of pain. However, these 2-D pain drawings can be limited in their ability to efficiently visualize pain characteristics for diagnosis purposes. Nonetheless, patients have been shown to prefer such drawings. This research develops an alternative interactive software solution to help in addressing the aforementioned situation, by employing the capabilities that advancements in 3-Dimension (3-D) technology offer. Subsequently, in the anticipation that limitations of current 2-D pain visualization will be solved, the developed approach facilitates the measurement of pain experiences via a 3-D visualization model of the patient. To ensure that it can effectively perform in real-world medical practice, the 3-D pain drawing is evaluated in this research through real-life case studies that are carried out in designated settings. The research findings have shown that the developed approach can potentially make significant contributions to society, science/technology and healthcare provision, with patients and clinicians suggesting that 3-D technology can be a promising means in the pursuit for more effective pain measurement solutions.
