A Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science-Psychology.

The present research explores the relationship between Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of optimal experience, or flow, (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990) and Brehm’s integrated model of motivational intensity theory (Brehm & Self, 1989; Wright, 1998). Flow is defined as a state of intense focus, enjoyment, and lack of self-awareness that occurs when a person’s ability for a given task is able to meet the demands of the task (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990; Jackson & Marsh, 1996). The integrated model of motivational intensity theory (Wright, 1998) posits that energization is a function of difficulty and ability. To date, there has been no empirical test examining the relationship between ability and difficulty in the flow engagement model. Thus, the present study tests the hypothesis that the flow experience is governed by the same energy conservation laws governing energization. Using methodology adopted from Wright and Dill (1993), this study experimentally manipulated perceived ability (poor versus excellent perceived ability) and perceived task difficulty (unknown, easy, versus difficult) in a 2x3 factorial design. It was predicted that participants in the poor-ability easy and unknown task difficulty conditions would report greater flow and would energize more than participants in the difficult condition. It was also predicted that participants in the excellent-ability unknown and difficult conditions would report greater flow and energize more than participants in the easy condition. The manipulation checks suggest that both manipulations of perceived ability and perceived task difficulty were successful. Nevertheless, this study was unable to replicate previous findings that suggest energization is the function of perceived ability and perceived task difficulty. One explanation is that, unlike prior work on intensity theory, nearly all of the measures were assessed during task performance. Consequently, this may have afforded participants the opportunity to reassess the difficulty of the task. Importantly, this study found that perceived ability, one’s perception of task competency, accounts for variations in both the flow and energization measures. It was also found that positive affect captures and predicts composite flow and autotelic scale scores. These findings can be useful for flow researchers looking for alternative measures of flow, while also laying the groundwork for future experimental research attempting to predict the flow experience.

▼ This dissertation is a comparative analysis of selected pastors' personality profiles and their conflict management styles. As pastors understand their personalities, this will decrease conflict within themselves and with church members. This research presents three theological presuppositions. They are shared and examined by detailed biblical word studies and biblical examples. It was determined that this research presents the unique study of relationship using the DISC personality profile and Speed Leas' "Discover Your Conflict Management Style." Similar studies were examined and critiqued. The study involved 1,532 pastors in East Texas. The correlation coefficient Pearson (r) was utilized to examine relationships of pastors in their relationship of personality profile and conflict management style, along with scatter plots, and the Chi-square. The significance of the study is that there is a relationship between pastors' personalities and their conflict management styles. Pastors who are (D)ominance in personality tend to have a Persuade conflict management style. Pastors who are (I)nfluencing in personality tend to exhibit a Collaborate conflict management style. Pastors who are (S)teadiness in their personality tend toward a Collaborate style of conflict management. Lastly, those pastors who are (C)ompliance in personality tend to have a Persuade conflict management style. The research found that years in the ministry have little or no effect upon pastors' personalities. Those with less than six years experience and those with twenty-one or more years experience tend to be Collaborate in their conflict management style. All other pastors are inclined to be Persuade. Another significant finding of the research is that the more conflict a pastor faces, the more likely he is to be Persuade in his conflict management style. The education of a pastor affected his conflict management style if he obtained a doctoral degree, making him more likely than any other group to be Persuade. The research will be helpful to pastors to better understand who they are and how they respond to conflict. The research can serve as a resource for churches in leadership development. The research can provide valuable information for church pastor search committees. The committee could administer the survey to a prospective pastor, and together they could discuss his personality and conflict management style as it pertains to the needs of that church. Healthy eating behaviors and intentions as well as physical activity behaviors and intentions were examined by assessing individual's attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. The purpose of this study was to explore the predictors associated with healthy eating and physical activity behaviors and intentions based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). College students from CCSU were recruited using the program, Sona, and were asked to complete an online questionnaire via SurveyMonkey©. Five measures were adapted and used to assess the healthy eating component: Attitudes, Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC), Subjective Norms, Healthy Eating Intentions, and Healthy Eating Behaviors. Five measures were adapted and used to assess the physical activity component: Attitudes, PBC, Subjective Norms, Physical Activity Intentions, and Past Physical Activity Behaviors. The hypotheses are as follows: (1) Attitudes, PBC, and subjective norms will positively predict healthy eating behaviors; (2) Attitudes, PBC, and subjective norms will positively predict intentions to eat healthy; (3) Attitudes, PBC, and subjective norms will positively predict physical activity behaviors; and (4) Attitudes, PBC, and subjective norms will positively predict intentions to be physically active. Results confirmed that healthy eating attitudes negatively influenced students' healthy eating behaviors; subjective norms significantly negatively impacted students' intentions to eat healthy and be physically active; and perceived behavioral control had a significant negative affect on students' intentions to eat healthy. On the other hand, perceived behavioral control had a significantly positive influence on students' physical activity behaviors. Unhealthy eating behaviors and low physical activity levels are known risk factors of obesity. By examining these concepts further, it may help school programs design interventions that implement strategies to increase healthy eating and physical activity among young adults.

▼ Drawing critically on a line of interpretation opened by Wilhelm Hennis more than 20 years ago, this thesis is concerned with Max Weber’s notion of ‘human type’ (Typus Mensch, Menschentum) and the way in which it enables to pose a philosophical question – what can leading a truly human life in the modern age mean? – from the perspective of social and cultural sciences. To that end, it brings out Weber’s framework for the analysis of the inner and external shaping of the human type as well as for the consideration of the possibility of life conduct, examining the inner momentum of the life orders in which human beings deploy their actions, and not merely their ‘external’ arrangements. Weber’s theoretical construct of the life orders and value spheres (especially in the ‘Intermediate Reflection’) and his analysis of the workings of the rationality of particular spheres of human action (as first and most completely exposed in the ‘music study’) are at the core of this framework. By suggesting that Weber was critical of – and went far beyond – analyses of the constraining of personality by ‘external conditions’, I seek to provide an account of his analysis of the manufacturing of adaptation. I show in particular that such fashioning, far from being only the result of the dynamics of rationality pervading all spheres of human action in different ways, rather arises in the interplay between such dynamics and the irrationalities it triggers, including in the rationalised life orders. The adapted human being is not only a carrier of needs or interests, but also of affects and even values: adaptation mobilises ‘life’. To such external and inner ‘forming’ of life, Weber opposed another kind of modern inner vocational connection to specific worldly value spheres. Thus the analysis of the inner momentum of the life orders and value spheres also crucially served Weber’s exploration of the possibility of ‘life conduct’ in opposition to letting life ‘slip by’ and merely be ‘formed’. The thesis has an important comparative strand, at three different levels. First, it sets out Weber’s notion of science of reality against the background of the epistemological debates at the turn of the 20th century. This highlights the divide between Weber’s conception of the role of science in a disenchanted world and other conceptions, which tended to be captured by philosophies of life. Secondly, specific comparisons are carried out, e.g. between Weber’s and Troeltsch’s analysis of the coining of a new Menschentum at the time of the Reformation. Finally I provide a more systematic comparison between Weber’s and Simmel’s analysis of the fate of the modern human being, highlighting the contrast between Weber’s affirmation of the possibility of a life conduct that confronts and transforms the world and Simmel’s self-referential notion of personality. ▼ Methodological shortcoming, a narrow focus on students 88 a group isolated from the wider society, the tendency to consider the student apart from the institution in which he operates - the university - and the difficulty of coming to terms with the transience of student status are some of the factors which have handicapped sociological inquiry in this area.Survey analysis may be supplemented by participant observation.Consideration of the student role may be supplemented by a consideration of the other members of his set of multiple roles.In the context of the Zambian social structure the student role is the focus of four sets of tensions.For historical reasons there exist two mutually exclusive avenues of recruitment to the ruling class, one passing through the educational system and the other through the party organization.The result is competition between those with 'expertise' and those who exhibit/loyalty and experience.Tension between students and the party arises not only from competition but also from the arbitrary choice of criteria for upward )ab1iity in any particular instance. The exclusion of the student from the political arena and also from the central institutions and value system has given rise to a negative oppositionelism and the perception of the political elite as illegitimate rulers. This generates a second set of tensions between students and government.The third source of tension lies In a generalized resentment, an embryo class consciousness, of the mass of society towards those who have power and wealth and particularly those who consider they are entitled to such positions by virtue of their advanced formal education. Finally the structure of the university social system and the student community are antithetical to the political structure of the wider society.In the university directives flow upwards from below while in the wider society they flow in the opposite direction. This structural discontinuity, not only gives riseXi,to tension but also a segmentation of the student role Into two discontinuous components - e civic pole and a university role.Apart from the student role, each student enacts other roles derived from the wider social structure and linking him to the society outside the university. Such role continuities however do not mitigate the tensions surrounding the student role. Within the university arena, extrinsically derived roles are only enacted insofar as they are compatible with the student role. SaullibrlUB between the university students and the government Is sustained through a set of norms and expectations which sharply differentiate between the student's civic and university roles. ▼ Objective : To determine the factors associated with unsafe sexual behaviour among the youth aged 13 to 19 years, in the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Lusaka Urban. Study Design: A cross section and comparative study design was carried out in 22 basic schools in Lusaka Urban among the youth attending grades 7,8 and 9. Setting: The study was carried out in Lusaka Urban, which has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate of 22% in Zambia. Lusaka is the capital city of Zambia and has a population of 1, 084,703 with the youth below 19 years of more than 50%of the population The city of Lusaka is a trading centre for goods from the East and Southern African which is part of the sub-Sahara region that has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world. Subjects: The study focused on the youth who are the future leaders and yet affected by the great HIV/AIDS epidemic. A total sample size of 319 youth (160 males and 159 females) aged 13 to 19 years in Grades 7,8and 9 selected from a line list of 25093 youth by using EPI 6 statistical calculator the study sample was selected. The subject from different schools were proportionately and conveniently selected and involved in the study. Main outcome measures: In this study unsafe sexual behaviour was used as the main outcome. The youth that were sexually active at the time of conducting the research were assumed to be involved in unsafe sexual behaviour as well as the group of youth that did not use condoms during the last sexual intercourse. Results: Social demographic factors- More males than females require assistance on safer sex methods and that more males than females were involved in premarital sex (P=<0.001), the youth aged 15 years and above were significantly more involved in premarital sex than the youth below the age of 14 years (P=<0.001) Education- There was a significant increase on premarital sex as the youth progressed from 7 to grade 9(P=<0.001). Religion- The youths belonging to Catholic church were significantly more involved in premarital sex as compared to the youth from other churches (P=0.058). Residence-The youth residing in Lusaka central Kanyama and Munali constituencies were more involved in premarital sex than the youth from other constituencies of Lusaka urban (P=<0.001).Types of guardian-The youths kept by mothers only were found to be significantly more involved in premarital sex than the youth kept by both parents (P=<0.001). From the focus group discussion it was found that most parents did not discuss HIV/AIDS and safer sex with their children. Financial support- The youth that received adequate financial support were significantly more involved in premarital sex than the youth that did not receive enough financial support (P=0.05). Knowledge factors: Perceived risk- The youth who were at higher risk of contracting HIV AIDS were found to be more involved in premarital sex than the youth who did not know that they were at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS (P=0.005). The objective of this study was to explore a group of key employees’ experiences and perceptions at the Government Funded Organisation (GFO) of the service performance of the GFO they work for, as well as to develop a social tool –a model – that could be used to help both the public fulfil its role of developing workable strategies aimed at ensuring that they deliver services according to their mandate. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods (mixed method approach) was used in this study. The existing quantitative instrument was buttressed by the empirically derived qualitative insights to form an instrument that was later distributed to all GFO employees with a view to developing a “mixed method model” of leadership work ethic for improved organisational performance for the institution concerned. During the qualitative phase of this study interviews were conducted using an exploratory theory approach. Eight executive members at the level of a Director General (DG) and Deputy Directors General (DDG) were interviewed. The result of the interviews was a qualitatively derived prototype of interrelated concepts in the form of a work ethic model, consisting of rich descriptive data which was carefully analysed using an exploratory theory methodology (Glaser & Strauss, 2007 and Daniels, 2009). This means the development of theory that is derived from an analysis of qualitative data. The computer assisted data analysis tool, Atlas, ti was used to support the qualitative data. The second phase of the study was conducted by distributing a questionnaire to 549 employees of the GFO. From the 549 questionnaires emailed to all employees, 349 were completed and returned, thus constituting a response rate of 76.5%. The questionnaires returned were deemed adequate for conducting a factor analysis. A first level factor analysis v was accordingly conducted on intercorrelation matrix of the 10 theoretical dimensions. A second level factor analysis on a sub-score intercorrelation matrix followed and resulted in six (6) factors being extracted. Iterative item analysis then yielded acceptable metric properties for each dimension and a Cronbach alpha coefficient ranging between 0.611 and 0.697, which was deemed a reasonable acceptable scale reliability for the model. To get at the desired model, the findings of the phases of the mixed method approach were synthesised and interrelated where data from the quantitative phase played a significant role to data from the qualitative phase. The derived model consists of the inner core and the outer core. The elements of the outer core which were qualitatively derived by means of exploratory theory provided a description of the discussion and gave the research participants a say in the inquiry. The elements of the inner core, on the other hand, were elicited through deductive reasoning and gave the model a qualitative exploration through the use of factor analysis. The development of behaviour, character and social skills of people stems from and is maintained by means of interaction with other people. Actually, the most crucial stage is during late adolescence, when proficiency in work ethics, relationships and especially assertiveness should be shaped, as it has direct bearing on the situation when someone does not act in an assertive manner in the work environment. People who are able to act in a truly assertive manner are able to express their feelings, thoughts and convictions without any aggression, in a non-destructive way, and to act in a neither extremely controlling, nor inappropriately reticent fashion. It has come to the notice of the researcher that the behaviour, social skills and especially the assertiveness of a considerable number of late adolescents at a specific technical training college, given their age, appear not be appropriate when among adults, as they communicate ineffectively and are not able to verbalise their expectations regarding their needs. It seems as if late adolescents do not want to make their voices heard. With “voice” an own opinion in relation to choices is meant. The researcher was left wondering whether they would be able to communicate in an adult manner with employees, and express their needs by means of “I messages”, as well as to what extent they would be able to take a stand solely on their own behalf, when having to contend with possible problems in the work environment. The emancipation process of late adolescents often gives rise to mixed emotions in themselves. They simultaneously look forward to and fear the process of becoming adults, which then results in them withdrawing themselves. Others then tend to view them as being incompetent. As a part of their need for independence, they criticise any boundaries, which in turn involves them in conflict. They display open hostility towards others and reveal low quality problem-solving skills, relating to superficial intra- and interpersonal skills in relationships with others.

▼ This thesis investigates the social determinants of well-being, behind bars and beyond. Through a series of four papers, it empirically tests some of the theoretical claims made by the social identity approach to health (also known as The Social Cure; C. Haslam, Jetten, Cruwys, Dingle, & Haslam, 2018a) which proposes that our social connections and, in particular, our social identity, lies at the heart of our well-being; and advances its applications by investigating its applicability amongst criminal offenders. Although research has highlighted the importance of differentiating between different types of social ties (C. Haslam, Cruwys, Milne, Kan, & Haslam, 2016a), Chapter 2 extends this by demonstrating experimentally that group ties are especially beneficial because they are internalized as part of a person's social identity and, through this, provide a basis for beneficial forms of connectedness and self-worth. Furthermore, applied social cure research has demonstrated that group ties can protect people from adverse life experiences (C. Haslam et al., 2018a). Chapters 3, 4, and 5 provide the first investigation of the social cure amongst offenders. My findings make a novel contribution to the imprisonment and resettlement literatures that offer little insight into the impact that group ties have on adjustment, and the mechanisms through which group ties impact offender well-being. Chapter 3 demonstrates that strong prisoner ties and membership in groups are associated with greater prisoner well-being, and identifies psychological needs and group contact as explanatory mechanisms. Chapter 4 demonstrates that ex-prisoners have social stigma attached to them, and this can have negative consequences; but Chapter 5 shows that even in the case of stigmatized groups (prisoners), if the 'right' identities are part of these individuals' social worlds, groups can be curative. Theoretical and practical implications of my findings are discussed, which open up interesting avenues for future research.
