▼ Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka huruvida tesen att läroböcker i ämnet religion i olika hög grad bär på islamofobiska tendenser stämmer. Frågan som författaren söker att besvara är: hur tar sig islamofobiska tendenser uttryck i läroböcker i ämnet religion på gymnasienivå? Den metod som används är syftesrelaterad textanalys, viket innebär att syftet styr analysen. Den analysmodell som används möjliggör analyserandet av förekomsten av islamofobiska tendenser. Vidare används analysmodellen för kartläggandet av öppna och stängda attityder gentemot islam och muslimer i de undersökta läroböckerna. Öppna attityder diskuterar islam utifrån samma förutsättningar som andra fenomen, medan stängda är fördomsfulla, negativa och stereotypa. Den vetenskapliga förankringen behandlar forskning rörande det mångkulturella samhället, orientalism och postkolonialism, islamofobi, stereotyper och även forskning om läroböcker, dess betydelse och deras framställning av islam och muslimer. Denna forskning påvisar att det i det svenska samhället finns en överdriven rädsla för islam och muslimer. Detta kallas för islamofobi. Grunden till denna rädsla förklaras i den orientalistiska diskursen. Huvudtesen är att kolonialmakter under historien skapat ett vi- och dem- perspektiv, där de andra är västvärldens antagonister. Det är genom att beskriva folk från orienten som barbariska, primitiva och underlägsna, som folket i väst kan förklara sig själva som intelligenta, civiliserade och överlägsna. Den stereotyp som existerar gällande islam och muslimer presenteras i massmedia och läroböcker. Bilden är oftast negativ även om den under senare tid blivit mer positiv än tidigare. Genom analysen av de två läroböckerna kan denna utveckling bekräftas då den äldre av de två böcker var den som bar på islamofobiska tendenser. Den tes som var utgångspunkten i detta arbete var mer svårbesvarad än vad jag trott. Eftersom endast en lärobok bar på stängda attityder kan ingen slutsats dras annat än att läroböcker kan bära på islamofobiska tendenser. Men med tanke på att den yngre läroboken endast bar på öppna attityder står tesen obekräftad. Det som dock måste lyftas fram är att även om det endast är ett fåtal böcker som idag bär på stängda attityder så är det illa nog. Dessa böcker kan av elever ses som bärare av kunskap vilket kan generera i negativa attityder gentemot islam och muslimer. Skolan är en arena där sådana attityder skall och kan motarbetas.

▼ To what extent is it possible for a social movement to transform a public education system in order to promote an alternative social vision? Under what conditions can this implementation occur within the bureaucratic state apparatus, at the regional and national level? How does state-society collaboration develop, in contexts where civil society groups and the state have opposing interests? This dissertation addresses these questions through an investigation of the educational initiatives of the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, or MST), a national social movement of rural workers struggling for agrarian reform. MST activists have been able to implement educational proposals in rural public schools that encourage youth to stay in the countryside, foster a sense of belonging to the movement, promote collective forms of work, and practice participatory governance. Part I provides an overview of the multi-level and multi-sited political ethnographic approach used to conduct this research. It then reviews the literature on social movements and state-society relations, and considers how a Gramscian framework can be used to analyze how social movements implement educational proposals in public schools that are opposed to the interests of the dominant class. Part II examines the history and national expansion of the MST's educational initiative: how activists first developed their educational proposals; why the movement went from promoting popular education to participating in the public educational sphere; and why and how the federal government appropriated these ideas as a new approach to rural schooling, known as Educação do Campo (Education of the Countryside). Part III explores the MST's attempt to transform public schools in three state educational systems and two municipalities, and why the MST's success differs drastically across the country depending on the state capacity, government orientation, and level of MST mobilization in each region. Comparison of the outcomes in these subnational cases yield new and unexpected insights into the relationships and conditions that lead to or impede participatory governance: (1) low-capacity governments and weak institutions can offer unusual openings for social movements to implement participatory initiatives; (2) high-capacity state antagonism negates the positive effects of mobilization; (3) not-so-public forms of contention are an effective strategy that social movements can use to engage the state and participate in the provision of public goods; (4) technocracy is a significant barrier to participatory practices, even among supportive governments; and, (5) state-society collaboration is not possible if the leadership of a social movement does not have a strong connection to its base. Significantly, this research shows that the implementation of a social movement's goals through the state apparatus does not always lead to movement cooptation or decline. ▼ Numerous studies warn community colleges about a growing shortage of available presidents in the coming decade (Duree, 2007). The American Council on Education pointed to this problem in a 2012 American College President Study that found 51 percent of presidents in 2011 were 61 to 70 years old, up from 37 percent only five years prior. Eddy (2012) noted this high number of older presidents and said their pending retirements should serve notice to community colleges that they need to work harder to develop new campus leaders. Within my qualitative study, I looked at the preparation of leaders through the experiences of current community college vice presidents who someday want to be a president. Taking a phenomenological approach, I interviewed 11 vice presidents working in several states west of the Mississippi River. I wanted to know more about what the vice presidents were doing to prepare themselves for a presidency, especially related to the community college president's public relations role. The literature indicated today's community college presidents are expected to have a larger role in the community and form strong partnerships with business leaders, donors, media outlets, and legislators (Cook, 2012). I was interested to see if they felt they were ready for that role, as well as what leadership development tools helped them grow as administrators and future presidents. Surprisingly, we spent a large portion of our interviews discussing impediments to their development and the challenges they faced as they advanced in their respective careers. From my findings, I learned that the vice presidents are struggling with their development efforts because of time limitations and a chaotic environment within many campuses. In addition to a lack of time and financial resources, many of the vice presidents indicated that much of their development efforts have been done on their own. Some of the vice presidents said they were comfortable with the public relations role and have experienced some training in that arena, either in actual practice, observation or coursework. Others indicated less comfort with the public relations expectations or a feeling that this role is overrated or overvalued. The most effective developmental tools for public relations appeared to be current presidents. Impediments in leadership growth also fell on some presidents who were not willing to allow their vice presidents a chance to experience public relations roles. ▼ The United States is undergoing such rapid shifts in the racial demographics of its population, that it is projected to become a majority-minority country in less than four decades. Will its citizenry be ready to participate socially and politically within the new racial/ethnic context? Higher education is positioned to play a role in the cultivation of a socially engaged democratic citizenship through its influence on students’ social agency, the extent to which a student values political and social involvement as a personal goal, which empirical research indicates is positively affected through students’ engagement with racially diverse peers. Selective institutions, particularly, serve as pathways to official positions of leadership for students who will govern an increasingly diverse democracy. In order to provide the opportunity of diversity benefits to all students, selective institutions may use affirmative action policies and practices to admit students of color historically denied admission. This study proposed the campus racial climates of institutions, in addition to the admission of a diverse student body and cross-racial engagement amongst peers, may play an important role in the development of social agency. This study, therefore, examined the interrelationship of compositional diversity, cross-racial interaction, and campus racial climate on social agency across White, Asian/Asian American, African American/Black, and Latina/o racial/ethnic groups. Grounded in a set of theoretical frameworks on the benefits of diversity, intergroup relations, and campus racial climate, this study employed multiple group, multi-level structural equal modeling (MSEM) using national and longitudinal undergraduate student survey data. The author tested three different measures of campus racial climate, one per each of the three models, in order to investigate if results were sensitive to how it was operationalized. The study’s key findings include: the impact of campus racial climate in connection to the diversity rationale, outcomes of equity and affirmative action policy should be understood through the unique dimension the variable employed measures; particular dimensions of the campus racial climate impact the levels of cross-racial interaction for all students but does not impact outcomes of social agency for students of color; and greater engagement with diverse peers is associated with greater levels of social agency values at the end of college.

▼ The College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) noted the need for PR directors to be held in higher esteem and to have more strategic influence in their athletic departments. This dissertation sought to provide some information to help CoSIDA accomplish its goal. Participants were drawn from the entire membership of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). An online survey to which 273 college sports public relations directors responded investigated current demographic characteristics as well their perceptions of strategic influence within college athletic departments in the U.S. The survey was drawn from the works of Berger and Reber in 2006, Blake and Mouton in 1985, Broom and Smith in 1979, Northouse in 2007, Richmond and McCroskey in 1990, and Stoldt in 1998. The survey results suggested the modern college sports public relations director is male, 30-49 years old, has a bachelor's degree in journalism or communications, and most likely makes 35-45,000. Participants identified most closely with the media relations role, had a responsive (versus assertive) personality, were more developed in technical (versus conceptual or human/relational) leadership skills, and possessed a task-oriented (versus relationship-oriented) leadership style. Respondents reported exercising moderate amounts of influence and that they rank second only to compliance officers in terms of their influence on athletic directors. Respondents varied in their opinions but generally thought their influence had increased and were largely satisfied with the influence they exert. The strongest predictors of strategic influence were serving in the manager (versus technician) role, being male, directly reporting to the athletic director, and having frequent contact with the AD. Assuming a publicity producer role (versus manager role) was negatively correlated with strategic influence. College sports public relations directors who are more assertive (versus responsive), who have developed conceptual leadership skills (versus technical or human/relational), and who have a relationship-oriented (versus task-oriented) leadership style believe they have more of a chance of gaining a seat at the decision-making table. The study concluded college sports PR directors who develop skills as strategic communicators and managers are more likely to gain influence in the future. Implications and suggestions for further research are discussed. ▼ The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of theological education on philosophy of human nature among Sunday school teachers in the Church of the Nazarene. Research materials consisted of Wrightsman's Philosophy of Human Nature scale and a demographic questionnaire constructed by the researcher. These materials were mailed to a random sample of 188 Sunday school teachers in the Oregon-Pacific District of the Church of the Nazarene. Useable materials were received from 157 subjects for an 84% return rate. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance, and tested for significance at the p < 0.05 level. The null hypothesis was retained: there was no difference in philosophy of human nature between subjects with different levels of theological education. Other findings were: 1) Oregon-Pacific Nazarene Sunday school teachers had moderately positive scores on all subscales of the PHN. Previous studies had reported that conservative Christians had negative scores on the PHN. 2) Oregon-Pacific Nazarene Sunday school teachers had a higher level of educational attainment than adults in the United States generally. 3) Women had more positive scores than men, although they had far less theological education than men. 4) Subjects with at least a college degree had more complex views of people than did those with a high school diploma or some college as the highest level of educational attainment. Recommendations were outlined for the practice of Christian education and for future research. These recommendations included the following: 1) use of the PHN as a screening device for Sunday school teachers, 2) cooperation between Nazarene colleges and district CL/SS boards to provide training opportunities for Sunday school teachers, 3) equipping of women for expanded leadership roles in Sunday school and church, 4) examination of differences that may exist in the philosophy of human nature between Sunday school teachers of different denominational groups, and 5) study of the relationship between training experiences, educational beliefs, and effectiveness of Sunday school teachers.
