▼ The idea that the same experimental findings can be
reproduced by a variety of independent approaches is one of the
cornerstones of science’s claim to objective truth. However, in
recent years, it has become clear that science is plagued by
findings that cannot be reproduced and, consequently, invalidating
research studies and undermining public trust in the research
enterprise. The observed lack of reproducibility may be a result,
among other things, of the lack of transparency or completeness in
reporting. In particular, omissions in reporting the technical
nature of the experimental method make it difficult to verify the
findings of experimental research in biomedicine. In this context,
the assessment of scientific reports could help to overcome – at
least in part – the ongoing reproducibility crisis. In addressing
this issue, this Thesis undertakes the challenge of developing
strategies for the evaluation of reporting biomedical experimental
methods in scientific manuscripts. Considering the complexity of
experimental design – often involving different technologies and
models, we characterise the problem in methods reporting through
domain-specific
checklists. Then, by using
checklists as a decision
making tool, supported by miniRECH – a spreadsheet-based approach
that can be used by authors, editors and peer-reviewers – a
reasonable level of consensus on reporting assessments was achieved
regardless of the domain-specific expertise of referees. In
addition, by using a text-mining system as a screening tool, a
framework to guide an automated assessment of the reporting of
bio-experiments was created. The usefulness of these strategies was
demonstrated in some domain-specific scientific areas as well as in
mouse models across biomedical research. In conclusion, we suggested
that the strategies developed in this work could be implemented
through the publication process as barriers to prevent incomplete
reporting from entering the scientific literature, as well as
promoters of completeness in reporting to improve the general value
of the scientific evidence.

▼ Despite remarkable
advancements in new technology in the past century,
highly trained experts continue to make avoidable errors:
planes crash, buildings collapse, trains collide and
marketing units make bad decisions when selecting
segments for targeting. Cross-functional teams are
brought together in the hope that a range of different
views will help to improve project outcome. Despite the
extensive knowledge brought together in cross-functional
teams, experts continue to make mistakes. Many
disciplines have taken action and implemented simple and
easy to use checklist, which have, despite their
simplicity, significantly improved team performance.
Checklists have successfully helped pilots during
emergency landings, guided staff during complex medical
procedures, and coordinated activities of different
contractors when building skyscrapers. Despite the
demonstrated usefulness in other disciplines, marketers
to date have not explored the potential of checklists.
While marketing textbooks do recommend the use of
checklists, it remains unclear how exactly to develop and
operationalise them and there is virtually no evidence of
them being used in marketing practise. The aim of this
research is to test, for the first time, the usefulness
of checklists in a marketing management context and to
gain insight into relevant parameters for checklist
design. First, targeting practices in 223 US firms are
investigated by surveying marketing managers. Checklist
usage and its association with performance outcomes are
assessed. Managerial preference for targeting checklists
is also investigated. Using insights from the manager
survey, the characteristics and properties of alternative
types of targeting checklists are then compared in an
experiment using 430 business students. Teams of three
students had to make targeting decisions in the
StratsimMarketing simulation, using one of three types of
checklist developed for this study. Results from the
manager survey indicate that using checklists, or similar
structured processes, is associated with higher
segmentation (+27%), innovation (+26%), and business
(+7%) performance. In the experiment, checklist usage
significantly increased the number of inspected decision
criteria when used by cross-functional teams, which in
turn, prevented new product failure in the simulated
market. Checklists do however have the potential to
increase team coordination difficulties. In contrast with
previous studies, findings from the current study
indicate that discipline checklists have the potential to
increase team coordination…

▼ The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of a checklist, compared to a smart pump and bar-code verification system, at detecting different categories of errors in intravenous medication administration. To address this objective, a medication administration safety checklist was first developed in an iterative user-centered design process. The resulting checklist design was then used in a high-fidelity simulation experiment comparing the effectiveness of interventions towards two classifications of error: execution and planning errors. Results showed the checklist provided no additional benefit for error detection over the control condition of current nursing practice. Relative to the checklist group, the smart pump and bar-coding intervention demonstrated increased effectiveness at detecting planning errors. Results of this work will this work will help guide the selection, implementation and design of appropriate interventions for error mitigation in medication administration.

▼ The research reported on in this thesis forms part of the foundation of a bigger research project in which an attempt is made to provide better, faster and more efficient feedback on student writing.
The introduction presents the localised and international context of the study, and discusses some of the problems experienced with feedback practice in general. The introduction also gives a preview of the intended practical implementation of the research reported on in this thesis.
From there on, the thesis is presented in article form with each article investigating and answering a part of two main guiding questions. These questions are:
1. Does feedback on student writing work?
2. How can feedback on student writing be implemented as effectively as possible?
The abstracts for the five individual articles are as follows:
Article 1
Article 1 presents a rubric for the evaluation of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) software based on international recommendations for effective CALL. The rubric is presented after a brief overview of the pedagogical and implementation fundamentals of CALL, and a discussion of what needs to be included in a needs analysis for CALL evaluation. It is then illustrated how the evaluation criteria in the rubric can be used in the design of a new CALL system.
Article 2
Providing feedback on student writing is a much-debated topic. One group of researchers argues that it is ineffective and another group remains convinced that it is effective, while at ground level teachers and lecturers simply carry on “marking” texts. The author of this article contends that both arguments have valid contributions to make and uses the arguments both for and against feedback to create a checklist for effective feedback practice. Adhering to this checklist should counter most of the arguments against feedback while supporting and improving the positive arguments in favour of feedback.
Article 3
This article reports on an experiment which tested how effectively standardised feedback could be used when marking L2 student writing. The experiment was conducted using a custom-programmed software tool and a set of standardised feedback comments. The results of the experiment prove that standardised feedback can be used consistently and effectively to a degree, even though some refinements are still needed. Using standardised feedback in a standard marking environment can assist markers in raising their awareness of errors and in more accurately identifying where students lack knowledge. With some refinements, it may also be possible to speed up the marking process.
Article 4
This article describes an experiment in which Boolean feedback (a kind of checklist) was used to provide feedback on the paragraph structures of first-year students in an academic literacy course. The major problems with feedback on L2 writing are introduced and it is established why a focus on paragraph structures in particular is of importance.
The experiment conducted was a two-draft assignment in which three…

▼ This Major Degree Project explores the concept of “complete streets” and the framing of an appropriate “complete streets” checklist for historic districts and character neighbourhoods in downtown contexts, attempting to learn especially from the case of Winnipeg’s Warehouse District Neighbourhood. A “complete streets” checklist is considered to include a combination of infrastructure and urban design considerations, such as sidewalks, bike lanes, intersections, transit stops, curb extensions, travel lane widths, and parking needs. It proceeds from the premise that if an individual street or system of streets is ‘complete’, individuals will be more likely to reduce the time spent using automobiles, and increase the time expended on walking, biking, or using other transit alternatives, while making travel on the streets safer and more enjoyable for all users. The MDP examines the current street-related infrastructure and uses within the Warehouse District Neighbourhood of Downtown Winnipeg and discusses the relevance of current or recent City of Winnipeg plans and proposals. Taking the form of a practicum, the research sought to inform and engage local planners, engineers and public officials regarding a “complete streets” approach to their work – primarily in terms of the recommended framing of a complete streets checklist as well as recommendations for future area improvements in the Warehouse District Neighbourhood, demonstrating the usefulness of the checklist.

▼ This dissertation provides evidence that information displays to support procedure following can aid performance and increase situational awareness and safety. The intent of such displays is to assist operators in not only following operational procedures, but also in comprehending the context of the procedures, enabling them to understand why, when, and how to deviate from the procedures if necessary. The results of the dissertation research show that the addition of procedure context increases situation awareness and reduces procedure-following errors, which has been shown to be a significant causative factor for accidents in aviation and other domains. In addition, a pilots ability to comprehend noncompliance appears to be limited, despite their interest in (and ability to) detect noncompliance. Pilots do not appear be able to interpret the consequences of that noncompliance, suggesting that the design of displays and procedures should assist them in doing so. The results also demonstrate that pilots attempted to use procedure information even when clearly outside the scope of the procedure. This means that procedures and procedure-support aids should consider operation outside of its normal bounds in their design, rather than only for nominal operation as is currently the case.

▼ Practitioners in creative domains such as web design, data visualization, and software development face many challenges while trying to create novel solutions that satisfy the guidelines around practical constraints and quality considerations. My dissertation work addresses two of these challenges. First, sometimes the guidelines may conflict with each other under a certain scenario. In this situation, tasks require expert opinion to prioritize one guideline over the other. This dependence on expertise makes the design process slow and time-consuming. Second, sometimes it is difficult to determine which guidelines have been fulfilled. In this scenario, experts have to manually go through a list of guidelines and make sure applicable guidelines have been successfully applied to the final product. However, using a list of guidelines has its own drawbacks. Not all guidelines are applicable to a project, and finding a relevant guideline can be strenuous for experts. Moreover, a design process is not as simple as following a list of guidelines. Design processes are dynamic, non-linear, and iterative. Due to these reasons, a simple list of guidelines does not align with the designers' workflow. My dissertation focuses on exploring mixed-initiative methods where computers and humans collaborate in a tight feedback loop to help follow guidelines. To this end, I present solutions for two complex creative tasks: biological network visualization where we can compute how well a design adheres to the guidelines but guidelines may conflict and web design where task requirements are hard to check programmatically. I hope this dissertation can serve to accelerate research on leveraging the complementary strengths of humans and computers in the context of creative processes that are generally considered out of bounds for automated methods.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze experienced auditors' perception of a structural working approach in the form of checklists for both experienced and less experienced auditors. Methodology: The study is based on a quantitative method in the form of a questionnaire sent to all Swedish approved auditors. The response rate was 4.8 percent. The responses were analyzed by Pearson correlation matrix, multiple linear regression and t-test. Findings: The results showed a general positivity to checklist use, however, the auditors are even more in favor of the less experienced auditors to use checklists. Theoretical perspectives: We apply theory of professions, structure and judgement at the auditors with diverse experience.

▼ Five to nine percent of children and adolescents have a serious emotional disorder and of those only 21 percent receive services. Early and accurate diagnosis can increase positive outcomes for these children (U.S. Surgeon General’s Report,
1999). Behavior checklists are standard assessment tools used in the evaluation of children and adolescents for the diagnosis of various disorders. This study focuses specifically on the Behavior Assessment for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2) in
addressing factors that would assist in the interpretation of the ratings of multiple informants. In particular, the following factors were considered: the level of agreement between informants, the ability of informants’ ratings in the prediction of the
final diagnosis, the difference in parents’ and teachers’ ratings on positive versus problem behavior and the differences in informants’ ratings based on the child’s gender. Data was gathered from 100 evaluations that used the BASC-2 from a university
based outpatient clinic that conducted assessments on children and adolescents ages 6 to 17. Ratings for Internalizing, Externalizing, Attention Problems, Adaptive Skills and Behavior Symptom Index were explored across multiple informants (mothers,
fathers, and two teachers). Given the sample size and the percentage of missing data, data was analyzed using multiple imputation techniques. Findings suggest that level of agreement between mothers and fathers are higher than the level of agreement
between two teachers across all the scales except Externalizing. On the Externalizing scale, teachers’ ratings had higher levels of agreement. Furthermore, results suggest that the level of agreement between informants is lower across settings (home vs.
school). Differences in agreement were found for Adaptive Skills and Internalizing with parents ratings these scales higher than teachers. Results for informants’ predictive ability indicated that mothers’ ratings are the best predictors
attention-related diagnosis and fathers’ ratings for internalizing related diagnosis. No differences were found between parent and teacher ratings of positive and problem behavior. In examining gender differences, parents and teachers rated boys higher
than girls for externalizing behavior, attention problems, and total problems; whereas, parents and teachers rated girls higher than boys for positive behavior. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Background: The surgical team consists of a complex interaction between different professionals who work together around the patient during surgical procedures. Surgical Safety Checklist [SSC] is a tool that should assist the interaction and communication within the surgical team. There is a great deal of research that proves how SSC improves mortality, morbidity and patient safety. The surgical team has despite that a lack of compliance with SSC. Aim: The aim of this litterateur review was to describe the surgical team’s perceptions of using the SSC. Method: The literature review was based on 14 scientific articles of qualitative, quantitative and mixed approaches. The articles were quality checked, analysed, broken down, thematized and merged into the result of this overview. Result: SSC was able to contribute to improved teamwork, communication, and work environment in the operating room, while at the same time various obstacles were highlighted with the collaboration around SSC. ▼ Forest carbon offset projects have been growing vigorously in China in the last ten years. It is necessary to form an overall picture of the projects, to analyze the quality of their development processes, and to shed light on the development of upcoming projects. In order to evaluate their development process, a framework of assessment was built up and applied in practical project assessment.
In this thesis, firstly, the situation of the global carbon markets and Chinese forest carbon offset projects was introduced. Especially, different international and domestic carbon accounting and other carbon related standards were presented and compared. Secondly, the previous studies about the assessment of sustainable development impacts of the forestry carbon projects were reviewed; the approaches and indicators were compared and summarized. Then, in combination with checklists and multi-criteria approaches, a new assessment framework was established, consisting of a set of indicators and a four-level scoring system. Finally, 16 Chinese forestry projects which have applied different carbon standards were evaluated with this assessment framework. Their performances were compared and analyzed, the characteristics of standards were also compared.
According to the results of the assessment, the successfully registered Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects gained higher scores, suggesting their development processes were of higher quality. The projects applying Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Standards (CCBS) in pair with another carbon accounting standard also tended to get higher scores, indicating the positive effect of CCBS on the consideration of sustainable co-benefits. The international standards are stricter than domestic standards, which can be seen from the comprehensiveness and meticulousness of the Project Design Documents (PDDs).
The result of the assessment corresponds to the previous understanding about the projects and standards, which supports the validity of the assessment framework.

▼ Currently, the Maintenance Department occupies a prominent place in most industries, due to the benefits that come from its function. To this end, it is imperative that the implementation of preventive maintenance plans be as efficient as possible, in order to promote the continuous production of products, without waste. In this context, a problem arises in Preh Portugal, Lda. related to the maintenance management, namely the existence of an excess of typologies existing in the different
checklists, which resulted in an inefficiency of the maintenance activity in the assembly area. So, a problem of wasting time is generated in the creation of preventive maintenance plans as well as in the execution of them, resulting in high operating costs.
The present work consists of the study and development of a methodology capable of streamlining and improving the process of creating task lists, rectifying the existing problems, with the aim to implement an effective preventive maintenance plan. Additionally, the analysis of how the key performance indicators evolve through this change is performed.
In the first phase, a survey of the essential topics is carried out to approach the topic of Maintenance. In addition, it is described the software used for monitoring and managing the company's data. In a second stage, the situation of the company is explained prior to the changes made and the transformations that took place after that, describing in detail the entire process that gave rise to the results that have been obtained. In a third phase, a detailed analysis of the key performance indicators used in the organization is performed, namely, the availability, mean time between failures, mean time to repair and the mean time to acknowledge. In this stage, it is also discussed another issue in the Maintenance division - the availability of the first shift. To conclude, final considerations are made, revealing that the final solution of the
checklists presents itself as an advantage for the process of preventive maintenance.

Dessa forma, a
The industrial production process can generate large amounts of wastewater.
These effluents, when untreated, can pollute soil and water, causing great
environmental impact. In this sense it is essential that all industries that generate
wastewater own a treatment plant. In order to keep the treatment plant permanently
functioning according to its purpose, it should be routinely evaluated. Therefore the
performance evaluation for Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants (IWTP) becomes
an important tool for maintaining its efficiency, and justifies itself by seeking
vulnerable points on the treatment plant and providing subsidies needed to produce
diagnosis and projects to adequate the systems, allowing treated effluent to remain in
compliance with the requirements established by the environmental legislation. In this
work, a methodological proposal was designed, formed by a road map composed of
levels of questioning, which assists the evaluator in the performance analysis of
IWTP. In…

▼ Abstract An area of student learning where assessment and support is most important is in the teaching of physical assessment to practical nursing (PN) students. Faculty teaches techniques of body system assessments and then evaluates student learning. First year practical nursing (PN) students at a Midwest community college were reported to be deficient in performing bedside physical assessments by clinical nursing faculty and hospital staff. It was proposed that the use of a bedside physical assessment checklist would assist faculty in teaching physical assessment and improve student outcomes. This qualitative phenomenological study involved a purposive sample of seven nursing faculty who taught a one day physical assessment class and who assessed students in the clinical area. The nurse researcher developed a comprehensive bedside physical assessment checklist and oriented the faculty to the use of the checklist. After using the checklist to teach and evaluate students, the faculty was interviewed about their perceptions of the tool. The interviews were taped, transcribed, and coded for themes using constant comparative analysis. Two major categories emerged from the data on faculty perceptions of the physical assessment checklist. The categories included "Checklist Structure and Use" and "Checklist Changes." Themes included: Diverse Views of the
Checklists, Need for Further Student Instruction, Needed Structural Changes, and Alternative Uses of the Checklist. Faculty perceived that the physical assessment checklist was a valuable tool to evaluate students in the clinical area. Key terms: Qualitative, student learning, student evaluations, clinical skills, physical assessments,
checklists

▼ Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) are used worldwide for summative examinations but often lack acceptable reliability. Research has shown that reliability increases if OSCE
checklists for medical students include only clinically relevant items. Also,
checklists are often missing evidence-based items that high-achieving learners are more likely to use. The purpose of this study was to determine if limiting checklist items to clinically discriminating items and/or adding missing evidence-based items improved score reliability in an Internal Medicine residency OSCE.
Six internists reviewed the traditional
checklists of four OSCE stations classifying items as clinically discriminating or non-discriminating. Two independent reviewers augmented
checklists with missing evidence-based items. We used generalizability theory to calculate overall reliability of faculty observer checklist scores from 45 first and second-year residents and predict how many 20-item stations would be required to reach a Phi coefficient of 0.8.
Removing clinically non-discriminating items from the traditional checklist did not affect the number of stations (11) required to reach a Phi of 0.8 with 20 items. Focusing the checklist on only evidence-based, clinically discriminating items increased test score reliability, needing eight stations instead of 11 to reach 0.8; adding missing evidence-based clinically discriminating items to the traditional checklist modestly improved reliability (needing 10 instead of 11 stations).
Checklists composed of evidence-based, clinically discriminating items improved the
reliability of checklist scores and reduced the number of stations needed for acceptable reliability. Educators should give preference to evidence-based items over non-evidence-based items when developing OSCE
checklists.

▼ This study addressed some of the challenges of supporting self-regulation of students for weekly tasks in community college online English composition; in a course that used a flexible learning design, a choice of procedural scaffolds was provided to support self-regulation of tasks by students. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the use of these procedural scaffolds, an instructor-designed, interactive
checklists tool and a non-interactive calendar tool, and the core assignment submission and meta cognition of community college online English composition students. Measures included click stream data for procedural scaffold usage, a count of core assignment submissions, and Meta cognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) scores. Results indicated that use of the instructor-designed, interactive
checklists tool better supported submission of core assignments by students than the non-interactive calendar tool. While MAI scores from students did increase across the study, no significant association with procedural scaffold use was found. Implications for future practice support the continued and extended use of interactive procedural scaffolds to support online students through task completion for complex processes such as writing. ▼ This study utilized a multiple baseline design across two study skills to examine the impact of a self-monitoring checklist and performance feedback on the implementation of study skills for seven college students with disabilities. The accuracy with which students performed study skills was calculated as a percentage based on the number of correct study skill steps completed during a college course divided by the total number of treatment steps. The results show that three of the seven students markedly increased the accurate use of the notetaking and study guide skills immediately when provided with a self-monitoring checklist and performance feedback, whereas the other four students had more variable results. However, following a booster session, all students' performance increased following intervention. Results were socially validated by students who indicated they were generally satisfied with the intervention and found it to be useful when studying for the college class.

▼ Purpose: The aim of the study was to identify barriers encountered by registered nurses (RNs) and nursing assistants (NAs) that prevent purposeful (hourly) rounding.
Background: The literature has shown that purposeful rounding improves patient outcomes and safety. However, few studies show the barriers encountered by nursing staff that hinder the purposeful rounding process.
Methods: A pre-post test design was implemented on a 25-bed oncology, urology medical surgical unit with a staff of 38 RNs, 9 NAs, and 4 Unit Secretaries (US). A pre-implementation needs assessment survey was completed by 55% (21/38) of RNs, 33% (3/9) of NAs, and 100% (4/4) of US. It was followed by an intervention in the form of in-services during huddles and a purposeful rounding checklist. A post-intervention survey was completed by 29% (11/38) of RNs, 56% (5/9) of NAs, and 25% (1/4) of US to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.
Results: The pre-intervention survey revealed that 86% (18/21) of RNs, 100% (3/3) of NAs, and 100% (4/4) of US believed better RN-NA communication was needed to do purposeful rounding. The post-intervention survey found that 64% (7/11) of RNs and 60% (3/5) of NAs were more likely to communicate with their RN/NA partner about the patient’s comfort and safety needs immediately after a purposeful round.
Recommendations: It is recommended that RN and NA unit champions be designated to role model communication between RNs and NAs during purposeful rounds and that staff use the purposeful rounding checklist in order to improve teamwork and patient care

▼ Venous thromboemboli (VTEs) are a clinical and public health problem as they are commonly linked to inpatient experiences, yet frequently occur in the outpatient setting. VTEs place a significant burden on health care organizations and patients alike, as VTEs are costly, require long-term medications, and frequently reoccur. Research has identified risk factors and determined best practices for VTE prevention and prophylaxis, however little consensus exists among health care organizations and the implementation of best practices is varied. This project studied the challenges and opportunities in VTE prevention and prophylaxis at a large metropolitan hospital in California. Environmental changes were made in patient rooms across ten medical surgical units to increase nurses’ compliance with sequential compression device (SCD) orders. New machines were labeled and placed on patient beds, signs were placed on documentation stations, and education sessions were conducted with over 300 medical surgical nurses. Informal interviews with nursing staff, discharge pharmacists, and the hospital’s outpatient clinic staff were conducted to determine obstacles in compliance and gaps in anticoagulant discharge education. The subsequent audits revealed that nurses’ compliance with SCD orders and documentation remain low and that SCD machines continue to be misplaced, transferred between units, and stored incorrectly. Additional observations further indicated that discharge anticoagulation education is inconsistent and a discharge checklist was developed in response. Future work will include increased education about SCD compliance and documentation. Additional research should be conducted to identify new barriers to compliance, interdisciplinary influences, as well as to determine local, state, or national similarities. Furthermore, interdisciplinary processes must be developed to ensure the tracking and return of machines. In addition, an institutional policy, such as the standardization of the discharge checklist, should be implemented to ensure consistent discharge patient education and optimal patient outcomes.

This study aimed to evaluate a checklist, with regard to the workstation and the clinical status
of the patient, used at the neuro-intensive care unit, NIVA, at a university hospital in central
Sweden.
The design of the study is descriptive with quantitative data and consists of three parts.
An observational, cross-sectional study where flaws and measures where studied, a journal
review where the usability where studied and a survey in which critical care nurses expressed
their experiences and perceptions.
The results showed that flaws where found in 38 % of all cases and these gave a measure
frequency of 77,5 %. The checklist was user friendly with utilization of 100 %. According to
the critical care nurses the checklist had a positive impact on their daily work, it provided
support and contributed to increase patient safety.
The conclusion is that the checklist contributes to detection and correction of flaws, it is user
fiendly and the critical care nurses have a positive mindset about it.
A modified checklist could be used in intensive care settings in general to ensure that staff are
working on an equivalent basis and provide a more patient-safe care.

▼ The overall question this research aimed to address was how and why the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) evolved. A literature review and introduction are presented as a background to the evolution of the Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA)-OSCE-Clinical Examination of RACS. A brief history of surgery and training, an outline of the functions of RACS and a description of evolution from the apprenticeship model to formal surgical training programs is given. A background to the purpose of assessment within RACS, and formative and summative assessments precedes a description of the Part 1 Examination of RACS. By 1985 it was realised that not all objectives of basic surgical training of the RACS could be assessed in the Part 1 Examination using Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs); hence the introduction of an OSCE Clinical Examination, to assess clinical skills such as history taking, examination of patients, procedural skills and communication skills. A description of the Part 2 exit examination and the relation of RACS to universities and government are given.
To undertake clinical examinations, clear definitions of clinical competence are required, and the differences between knowledge, the application of knowledge, competence and performance are considered and elucidated. These form the background to the clinical examination as a competency assessment, as opposed to a performance assessment in actual clinical practice.
Then follows a detailed analysis of some important components of any examination process including: clear definition of the purpose of the assessment; blueprinting for type and content of assessment; reliability; validity; educational impact or consequential validity; cost; and feasibility and acceptability.
Reliability of different clinical examination types is considered in detail, and an outline of definitions and the method of determining reliability described. Factors affecting reliability include: length of testing time; number of testing samples; number of examiners; standardised patient performance; and variation of examinees across testing stations (inter-case variability or content specificity).
Validity is examined to ensure an examination is actually testing what it is intended to test. Face and content validity, alignment between the curriculum, the references and the examination, and consequential validity (the effect of the examination on learning) are highlighted as important validity components.
Then follows an evaluation of rating scales for OSCE exams, using check lists or global assessments, assessor training, and methods to determine standards and pass marks for the examination. This includes relative and absolute standards, Angoff’s judgemental method, and the importance of…

▼ Embedded systems control nearly every device we
encounter. Examples abound: appliances, scientific instruments,
building environmental controls, avionics, communications, smart
phones, and transportation subsystems.
These embedded systems can
fail in various ways: performance, safety, and meeting market
needs. Design errors often cause failures in performance or safety.
Market failures, particularly delayed schedule release or running
over budget, arise from poor processes. Rigorous methods can
significantly reduce the probability of failure.
Industry has
produced and widely published “best practices” that promote
rigorous design and development of embedded systems. Unfortunately,
20 to 35% of development teams do not use them, which leads to
operational failures or missed schedules and budgets.
This
dissertation increases the potential for success in designing and
developing embedded systems through the following:
1. It
identifies, through literature review, the reasons and factors that
cause teams to avoid best practices, which in turn contribute to
development failures.
2. It provides a framework, as a
psychologically unbiased mediator, to help teams institute best
practices. The framework is both straightforward to implement and
use and simple to learn.
3. It examines the feasibility of both
crowdsourcing and the Delphi method to aid, through anonymous
comments on proposed projects, unbiased mediation and estimation
within the framework. In two separate case studies, both approaches
resulted in underestimation of both required time and required
effort. The wide variance in the surveys’ results from
crowdsourcing indicated that approach to not be particularly
useful. On the other hand, convergence of estimates and forecasts
in both projects resulted when employing the Delphi method. Both
approaches required six or more weeks to obtain final results.
4.
It develops a recommendation model, as a plug-in module to the
framework, for the build-versus-buy decision in design of
subsystems. It takes a description of a project, compares designing
a custom unit with integrating a commercial unit into the final
product, and generates a recommendation for the build-versus-buy
decision.
A study of 18 separate case studies examines the
sensitivity of 14 parameters in making the build-versus-buy
decision when developing embedded systems. Findings are as follows:
team expertise and available resources are most important;
partitioning tasks and reducing interdependence are next in
importance; the quality and support of commercial units are less
important; and finally, premiums and product lifecycles have the
least effect on the cost of development.
A recommendation model
incorporates the results of the sensitivity study and successfully
runs on 16 separate case studies. It shows the feasibility and
features of a tool that can recommend a build-or-buy decision.
5.
It develops a first-order estimation model as another plug-in
module to the framework. It aids in planning the development of
embedded systems. It takes a…

▼ This dissertation uses the terms of Kenneth Burke’s dramatism to identify rhetorical aspects of surgical team checklists as they have been promoted, performed, studied, and surveilled. I argue that these terms can help to account both for the rapid uptake of checklists into policy and for their more variable effects and uptake into practice. I develop this argument by analyzing a large archive of texts published between 1999 and 2017, including popular media, news coverage, promotional campaigns, primary research, and other forms of scholarship. These published texts are considered alongside ethnographic fieldnotes from a study in which I collaborated to design, introduce, and evaluate an early version of a preoperative checklist at four Canadian hospitals. My analyses are guided heuristically by the first principles and central terms of dramatism, including action and motion; motive and situation; identification and division; attitude, form, and circumference. I use these terms to chart the early emergence of checklists within professional literature; to trace their rapid uptake as a standard of professional communication; to discern their multiple purposes and effects; to illustrate how and why they are enacted, accepted, and sometimes rejected in the operating theatre; and to locate blind spots in applied health services research. Taken together, these analyses demonstrate the importance of diverse rhetorical processes both to the uptake and to the basic functions of checklists. They also demonstrate the value and versatility of dramatistic terms. I contend in particular that the concept of rhetorical situation, as elaborated by Burke, holds significant potential for understanding and mediating the material and symbolic dimensions of practice and practice change. This dissertation points the way toward a uniquely rhetorical approach to the study and practice of knowledge translation in healthcare work.
