▼ This thesis argues that since in our increasingly secularised culture one of the very few direct points of contact between the Church of England and the young is the ministry of school chaplains, theirs is a vital ministry for the Church and its future. The study described in the thesis researched school chaplaincy in Church of England secondary schools to establish what chaplains do, how they understand their ministry and how school students themselves respond to chaplaincy. Originating in the researcher’s professional role in support of school chaplains, the research was undertaken on a multi-method basis. Initial scoping interviews were undertaken with school chaplains and headteachers in a range of schools. A full literature review located school chaplaincy within the conceptual contexts of missiology, ministry and chaplaincy. In-depth interviews with school chaplains explored their self-understanding as ministers. A national, internet-based survey of all contactable school chaplains was undertaken to explore issues identified earlier in the study, and a series of focus-group interviews was undertaken with senior school students. The research revealed that chaplains perceive little awareness within the Church of England of the missional significance of their ministry, although individual chaplains emerged as highly-motivated spiritual professionals committed to the pastoral welfare of their communities, and with a strong sense of their mission as ‘God people’. From a wide variety of ecclesial and personal backgrounds and working in very different school contexts, chaplains have multiple, significant functions which are well understood by school students, and exercise a ‘ministry of presence’. The research evidence highlights the need for greater recognition of the ministry of school chaplains and for structures of support and development to resource this vital ministry. The thesis concludes with an outline of policy proposals for the Church in the light of the recent development of a new ‘para-chaplaincy’.

▼ Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the perception of spirituality that was held by senior managers in one area health service in NSW. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 participants at the senior management level such as Executive Director and Director of Nursing level. Each interviewee was given a statement defining spirituality and a copy of 8 questions to review a number of viewpoints about delivery of spiritual/pastoral services in their facility. Each interview was audio recorded. Analysis: Thematic Analysis was utilised as the study began with no hypothesis to test.Results: 18 people were interviewed. Each participant acknowledged that Pastoral Services were delivered in their facility. No one felt that it was an unnecessary service. Most felt that Spirituality was a concept that needed to be introduced into the training of the clinical disciplines. All felt that it was not their facilitys responsibility to train people in Spirituality. Most felt that it was either the training institutions, such as universities, or the professional organisations which should do the training. There was a strong feeling that either NSW Health or the Area Health Service should set guidance but they wanted the ability to adapt to their particular site. Besides liturgy, there was little awareness of what chaplains actually did. Although internationally, and in states such as Victoria, there has been a move away from denominational chaplaincy to discipline specific chaplaincy, there was no awareness of this trend, but neither was there any opposition to it. Once the subject was raised, most thought that standards for chaplains would be an improvement to their service.Using Themes Analysis several topics emerged: The need for Policy and procedures Acknowledgement of the importance of Spirituality Service Related issues Training and Education Chaplaincy Ethics Problem issuesConclusion: Even though this study was a standalone project, it could be viewed as a pilot project which has highlighted the need for an Australian wide study looking at how the senior managers in Health see Spirituality.The Pastoral Services team in each facility (outside the two faith based hospitals) need to become proactive in educating staff as to what they do, and how they do it.Most managers felt that Spirituality was a concept that needed to be introduced into the training of the clinical disciplines but that it was not their facilitys responsibility. ▼ This thesis investigates the recent growth of chaplaincy roles in community contexts. A gap in knowledge existed regarding how and why these roles were emerging at this time. The purpose of the research was to generate new insight into the significance of the growth in and practice of chaplaincy in community contexts for the mission and ministry of the church in England and thus to contribute to knowledge, policy and the development of best practice. The research adopted a case study approach. It was designed as a qualitative comparative case study of the emergence of chaplaincy roles in three contrasting geographical contexts of ministry. Data were collected by interviews, observation and documentary analysis providing rich descriptions and multiple perspectives on what was happening. A cross-case analysis identified three main themes from the data. These themes were used as the basis for proposing the significance of the phenomenon. The findings demonstrate that chaplaincy roles are emerging as a missional response to the challenge of engaging with the whole of society presented to the church by a changing culture. It also demonstrates the current lack of conceptual clarity about what chaplaincy is and the consequent lack of chaplaincy representation within the missiological and ministerial discourses of the institutional church. The study concludes that chaplaincy is of central significance to the mission and ministry of the church given that chaplains are located in the social structures of society alongside people whom the churches find it increasingly difficult to encounter. It offers the proposition for others to test, that if chaplaincy is to have a voice in church discourses and if sustainable best practice is to be developed, the identity and integrity of chaplaincy as a genre of ministry need to be described. The new knowledge generated by the research provides a basis for such a description, for the development of the researcher’s practice and for making a contribution to church policy and practice.

The present research seeks to evaluate the work of the military chaplain. The focus is on analyzing his influence and the validity of his task within a military institution. Taking as a starting point historical, theological, technical and practical observation, the research seeks to confirm the hypothesis that the role of chaplaincy has been, is today, and will always be, of great relevancy to the armed forces: chaplaincy services, in terms of influence, validity and import within a military organization parallels the role played by spirituality and religion in all of human life. The path covered for the development of these observations begins with the historical development of military chaplaincy, from its beginnings to its regular establishment and pervasive presence nowadays. Next, it covers the religious aspect, analyzing, on one hand, the human being as imbued with spirituality and, therefore, needing contact with the sacred, and on the other hand, the military environment as that of an encompassing institution whose very conception points inexorably to the need of a helping intervention in terms of the resources offered by religious beliefs. Finally, the research is complemented by drawing on the professional experience of its author as an evangelical chaplain in the Air Force. The military profession of the chaplain is seen in distinction from general militarism and from regular religious work, mindful of the intersection between both roles and, thus, establishing a concept of military chaplaincy.

Esta pesquisa procura avaliar o trabalho de um capelão militar. O foco central é analisar sua influência e a validade de seu trabalho dentro de uma Organização Militar. A partir de constatações históricas, teológicas, técnicas e práticas, no transcurso do trabalho procura-se comprovar a hipótese de que a capelania sempre foi, é nos dias atuais, e sempre será de extrema relevância para as Forças Armadas. O serviço de capelania em nível de influência, validade e importância está para uma Organização Militar tal qual a espiritualidade e a religião estão para o ser humano. O caminho percorrido nas constatações obtidas passa primeiramente por uma via histórica desde os primórdios até sua regularização e prática expansiva nos dias atuais. Depois, passa pela questão religiosa. Analisa, por um lado, a pessoa humana, sendo esta dotada de espiritualidade e, portanto, necessitada do encontro com o sagrado; e por outro lado, analisando o ambiente militar como uma instituição total, cujo conceito aponta inexoravelmente para uma intervenção de ajuda no que tange aos recursos oferecidos pelas crenças religiosas. Por fim, este caminho é trilhado em meio á prática profissional do autor, como capelão evangélico da Aeronáutica. A profissão militar de um capelão é abordada separadamente quanto ao militarismo e ao trabalho religioso, não deixando de lado a intersecção dos dois, formando assim um conceito de capelania militar.

Esta pesquisa procura avaliar o trabalho da Capelania Hospitalar na Terapia da Enfermidade. E o foco central é analisar a influência e a validade do trabalho de um Capelão dentro de um Hospital. Nesta pesquisa vamos fazer verificações históricas, teológicas e, pragmáticas e, no desenvolvimento do trabalho se procura comprovar a hipótese de que a capelania sempre foi, é sempre será relevante nos dias atuais no contexto Hospitalar. O serviço de Capelania em extensão, validade e importância está para uma Organização Hospitalar assim como a espiritualidade e a religião está para o ser humano. O caminho percorrido nas verificações atravessa essencialmente por uma via histórica desde sua gênese até sua regulamentação e prática extensiva na atualidade. Considera a pessoa de Deus, e da pessoa humana, e nesta consideração Deus e Homem, vê-se que este tem necessidade de encontro com o sagrado; e nesta necessidade analisa-se o ambiente hospitalar e dentro deste vamos encontrar a Capelania, a qual é denominada: Capelania Hospitalar, passando a ser considerada uma Instituição Jurídica. A capelania dentro de um hospital será uma ferramenta amplamente social, pois alcançara os enfermos; seus familiares e todo staff hospitalar. Finalmente, o caminho trilhado por este pesquisador faz parte de sua prática profissional como pastor da Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil.

This research evaluates the work of the Hospital Chaplaincy Illness Therapy. And the main focus is to analyze the influence and validity of the work of a chaplain in a hospital. In this research we make checks historical, theological, and pragmatic, and work development is sought to prove the hypothesis that the chaplaincy has always been, always will be relevant today in the context Hospital. The Chaplaincy service in scope, validity and importance is for a hospital as well as spirituality and religion is for humans. The path crosses the findings essentially a historical road from its genesis to its rules and extensive practice today. Does the person of God and the human person and in this regard God and Man, one sees that this needs to encounter with the sacred, and this need is analyzed within the hospital environment and this we find the Chaplaincy, which is called: Hospital Chaplaincy, from being considered a legal institution. The chaplaincy in a hospital is largely a social tool, as had reached the sick, their families and staff throughout the hospital. Finally, the path taken by this researcher is part of their professional practice as pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil.

This research has as its central theme the humanized care of hospitalized patients diagnosed with an incurable disease, and its general objective is to investigate, through literature review, how spirituality with people with a life-threatening disease, and through the imminence of death, can contribute to the preparation and confrontation of this reality and add a higher quality to their last days of life. The methodology applied for this research consists of a qualitative bibliographic review referring to this theme. The three chapters of this paper address the following approaches: the first will deal with aspects that involve the process of illness and dying, which may comprise a painful experience in the physical, psychological, social and spiritual realms. The second chapter will discuss the hospital chaplaincy constituted and integrated with the global hospital services as a specialty with a multidisciplinary team in humanized patient care. The third chapter will address practical issues of caring through spiritual assistance and the use of elements such as prayer, the Bible, and the benefits of forgiveness, both from the perspective of science and from the perspective of the Christian faith. The research had as its main reference the following theoretical framework: Daniel Marcolin - Morte e Morrer: condutas éticas em defesa da dignidade humana; Wagner Hummig and Albert Friesen - Os tentáculos da dor crônica; Leo Pessini - Bioética: Um grito por dignidade de vive; Ana G. C. Melo and Ricardo Caponero - Cuidados Paliativos – abordagem contínua e integral;; Albert Friesen - Cuidado na enfermagem; Alexandre A. Martins - É importante a espiritualidade no mundo da saúde?; Traugott Roser - Aconselhamento diante da morte e suas implicações para a competência pastoral; Jean-Yves Leloup - Cuidar do ser: Fílon e os Terapeutas de Alexandria.

Esta pesquisa apresenta como tema central o cuidado humanizado com pacientes hospitalizados e diagnosticados com uma doença sem possibilidade de cura, e tem por objetivo geral investigar, por meio de revisão de literatura, como a espiritualidade junto a pessoas com uma doença ameaçadora à vida, e mediante a iminência da morte, pode contribuir no preparo e enfrentamento dessa realidade e agregar uma maior qualidade para seus últimos dias de vida. A metodologia aplicada para esta pesquisa consiste em uma revisão bibliográfica qualitativa referente a esse tema. This research aims to investigate the contribution that the service can provide pastoral care to the sick cancer and their families in the hospital. In this paper, we seek to recover the human dimension by means of spirituality, be a reference to aid in the face of pain and suffering to convey the love and consolation and hope in God exists, to offer health professionals a better understanding of the importance of hospital chaplaincy service to aid in the recovery of the patient. Thus, in the first chapter it s indicated an objective way to its origin, history and development of pastoral care to the current context. Addresses the question of evangelical statement of pastoral care, as well as the profile of the hospital chaplain. The second part discusses a priori on the issue of dialogue between theology and science. And the philosophy part of this dialogue as a mediator between these knowledge. In a second step the author addresses the concepts integral health and salvation, and finally presents several studies showing the benefits of faith to health. In the third chapter, in turn provides a reflection on the question of the drama experienced by cancer patients. Addresses concisely spirituality of cancer patients in the hospital.

A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar a contribuição que o serviço de capelania hospitalar pode proporcionar ao enfermo oncológico e aos seus familiares no ambiente hospitalar. Neste trabalho, busca-se resgatar a dimensão humana por meio da espiritualidade, ser um referencial de auxílio diante da dor e do sofrimento ao transmitir o amor, o consolo e a esperança existente em Deus, oferecer aos profissionais da saúde uma melhor compreensão da importância do serviço de capelania hospitalar para o auxílio na recuperação do enfermo. Sendo assim, no primeiro capítulo resgata-se de forma objetiva a origem, a trajetória e o desenvolvimento da capelania hospitalar até o contexto atual. Aborda a questão da fundamentação evangélica da capelania hospitalar, bem como o perfil do capelão hospitalar. A segunda parte discorre a priori sobre a questão do diálogo entre a teologia e as ciências. E a filosofia participa deste diálogo como mediadora entre esses saberes. Em um segundo momento o autor trata dos conceitos saúde integral e salvação e, por fim, apresenta vários estudos que comprovam os benefícios da fé para com a saúde. No terceiro capítulo, estabelece uma reflexão sobre a questão do drama vivenciado pelo paciente oncológico. Aborda de forma concisa a espiritualidade do paciente com câncer no contexto hospitalar.

The master thesis deals with ethics in university chaplaincy. Ethics is essential in human relationships and is present in all spheres of human life. It is not different in academic settings. Professional ethics grounds the practice of the university chaplaincy professional in his/her professional practice. Throughout the work it was noticed that although the institution follows Christian precepts, the ethos of which is based on the principles of love, community living, the otherness, care, freedom with responsibility, professional ethics ultimately incorporates such values, since being ethical is to act based on socially constructed and accepted principles.. It was found that interpersonal relationship between the university chaplain and the individual is based on trust, allowing for open communication between them, but secretive. Thus, the university chaplaincy, with a caring role, becomes a ministry of help and pastoral care.

Este trabalho de mestrado trata da ética na capelania universitária. A ética é fundamental nas relações humanas e está presente em todas as esferas da vida do ser humano. No meio acadêmico não é diferente. A ética profissional conduz a atuação do profissional da capelania universitária no seu exercício profissional. Ao longo do trabalho percebeu-se que, ainda que a instituição de ensino siga preceitos cristãos, cuja ética fundamenta-se nos princípios do amor, da vivência comunitária, na alteridade, no cuidado, na liberdade com responsabilidade, a ética profissional acaba por incorporar tais valores, uma vez que ser ético é agir a partir de princípios construídos e aceitos socialmente. Constatou-se que a relação interpessoal entre o capelão universitário e o indivíduo é baseada na confiança, permitindo uma comunicação aberta entre eles, porém sigilosa. Assim, a capelania universitária, com uma função poimênica, converte-se em um ministério de ajuda e cuidado pastoral.

For a great majority of people to talk of chaplaincy is to refer to the work of spiritual assistance to hospitalized people. The goal of this research is to open the spectrum and redimension the work field of chaplaincy. It is to humanize humanity which is distancing itself day after day from helping, supporting, consoling and fraternally loving. In this work we seek to recover the human dimension through spirituality, through a referential of help facing the chaos which humanity is feeling. It is to offer a better comprehension of the importance of the service of chaplaincy to help and recover the humanization of humanity. Thus, the first chapter develops the origin and the foundations of chaplaincy. It deals with the issue of the evangelical foundation of chaplaincy, as well as with the profile of the chaplain. The second part discourses about the multiple modalities in which chaplaincy aims to work, conceptualizing each of these areas of work and not losing from view the need to exercise this office based on theology. Finally, it presents the benefits of faith related to the exercise of chaplaincy. The third chapter reflects about how to organize the chaplaincy work and its functioning within its area of work.

Falar sobre capelania, para grande maioria das pessoas, é referir-se ao trabalho de assistência espiritual a pessoas hospitalizadas. O objetivo desta pesquisa é abrir o leque e redimensionar o campo de atuação da capelania. É humanizar a humanidade que está se distanciando dia após dia da prestação de auxílio, de apoio, de consolo e de amor fraternal. Neste trabalho, busca-se resgatar a dimensão humana por meio da espiritualidade, através de um referencial de auxílio diante do caos que a humanidade perscruta. É oferecer uma melhor compreensão da importância do serviço de capelania para o auxílio e resgate da humanização da humanidade. Sendo assim, o primeiro capítulo desenvolve a origem e os fundamentos da capelania. Ele aborda a questão da fundamentação evangélica da capelania, bem como o perfil do capelão. A segunda parte discorre sobre as múltiplas modalidades em que a capelania visa atuar, conceituando cada uma destas áreas de atuação e não perdendo de vista a necessidade de exercer este ofício a partir teologia. Por fim, apresenta os benefícios da fé para com o exercício da capelania. O terceiro capítulo, reflete sobre como organizar o trabalho de capelania e o seu funcionamento dentro de sua área de atuação.
