▼ Yn yr ymchwil hwn ystyrir sut y gall astudiaethau perfformiad gynnig mewnwelediad i sut y mae cymdogaeth y capel Cymraeg - trwy weithredoedd perfformiadol - yn cael ei chreu, ac yn perthnasu at y capel. Trwy gyfuno damcaniaeth perfformiad ac ymarfer yng nghyd-destun y capel Cymraeg, mae’r ymchwil hwn yn gyfraniad gwreiddiol i’r meysydd dan sylw. Defnyddir syniadaeth Diana Taylor o’r archif a’r repertoire er mwyn esbonio bod perfformiad yn fodd dilys o fynegi hunaniaeth a bodolaeth. Trafodir wedyn fod modd cromfachu gweithgarwch perfformiadol er mwyn ei ddadansoddi. Cyfeirir at syniadaeth yr anthropolegydd Victor Turner fod perfformiad, o’i gromfachu, yn cynnig dramâu cymdeithasol (social drama) a fedr ddatgelu rhywfaint am hunaniaeth cymdogaeth. Arddelir methodoleg Ymarfer fel Ymchwil yn rhannol, mewn perthynas a syniadaeth ffenomenolegol, er mwyn trafod gweithgarwch byw repertoire'r capel. Er mwyn gosod sail i hyn, trafodir cyd-destun gweithgarwch perfformiadol y capel drwy edrych ar y berthynas hanesyddol a fodola rhwng y capel Cymraeg, cymdogaeth a pherfformiad, gan ddadlennu fod y berthynas rhwng y rhinweddau hyn wedi bod yn bresennol yn hanesyddol ac yn dylanwadu ar wead y rhinweddau heddiw. Trafodir profiadau o gyd-weithio’n ymarferol gyda thri chapel. Perfformiwyd darn unigol yn edrych ar fy mherthynas at y capel ar ffurf atgofion, wedyn gweithiwyd gyda’r capeli i greu perfformiadau a oedd yn dadlennu eu perthynas hwythau at eu capel. Bwriad y gwaith ymarferol oedd profi’n ymgorfforedig y modd y gall perfformiad glymu pobl at ei gilydd mewn cymdogaeth ac at ofod arbennig. ▼ Despite its present circumstance as an extinct Missouri town in the geographic heart of the Midwest, Chapel Hill College was once the vanguard of the burgeoning American empire. In 1852, Chapel Hill College stood as a monument to the triumph of the small slaveholding society that migrated laterally across the Mississippi and settled in western Missouri. The school's success and inevitable failure is a microcosm of the history of migration into western Missouri that was aided and abetted by government, churches, and men perched atop the pinnacle of power. The history of the region around Chapel Hill has been eclipsed by the rise of Kansas City, Bleeding Kansas, and the Civil War. From the 1840s until the mid 1850s the towns southwest of present day Kansas City thrived along with the trade and travel connected to the Santa Fe and Texas trails. The communities around Chapel Hill, Pleasant Hill, and Lone Jack were flourishing until they were destroyed by the tumult of the Border War that merged into the general violence of the Civil War. Several small Missouri towns went up in smoke and along with them went their histories. Chapel Hill is exactly such a town. This thesis examines the factors that created the town and the college on the geographic edge of the American frontier. It argues that settlers to the area had historic and cultural roots that eased their migration. Technological innovations expedited their move west and shaped the way they thought of the future. The society that built the school was supported economically and militarily by government, underpinned by smallscale slavery, and girded by religion. It further argues that the wealth generated from the Santa Fe trade created a local economy that allowed the school to briefly thrive. The school and town were destroyed during the war and have virtually disappeared in the historic record. According to the scant historic record, the school closed amidst a drought and a downturn in the economy. This thesis examines evidence that suggests the swirling political storm over Bleeding Kansas was an additional cause for the closing of the school Advisors/Committee Members: Burke, Diane Mutti (advisor).

▼ Este trabalho incide sobre a existência de uma capela, conhecida por capela de Santo António da Praça dos Touros, considerada um símbolo para os bracarenses. A capela teve a sua origem numa ermida, dedicada a Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, mandada erigir na centúria de quinhentos, na horta jardim do Paço Arquiepiscopal, por D. Manuel de Sousa, Arcebispo de Braga (1545-1549). Ao longo dos tempos, a capela sofreu modificações, mas manteve-se por mais de quatro séculos voltada para a antiga Praça dos Touros e atual Praça do Município. Este imóvel era propriedade da confraria de Santo António da Praça, a qual ainda se encontra em funcionamento. Esta irmandade é no século XX, uma corporação de piedade e beneficência, que deverá agir conforme os estatutos e os seus recursos: zelar pela capela, promover o culto e veneração dos seus padroeiros, socorrer os confrades pobres e doentes, ou inválidos. É, no período em análise, uma confraria sócio caritativa integrada no movimento confraternal da cidade. Nos meados do século XX, no âmbito do desenvolvimento e transformações urbanísticas da cidade, que passava pela abertura de novas ruas e alargamento de outras, a capela de Santo António da Praça foi condenada à extinção. A Câmara Municipal de Braga pretendia abrir uma nova rua que ligasse a Praça do Município à rua Francisco Sanches. Esse traçado urbanístico passava pela demolição da capela. Então a edilidade propôs à confraria a aquisição do espaço que ela ocupava e reforçou a ideia de que defendia o interesse dos munícipes. A negociação prolongou-se ao longo de dois anos, até que a irmandade pediu à mesa da confraria da Santíssima Trindade da igreja do Pópulo para a aceitar com todos os seus pertences. Após sete décadas sobre a extinção da capela de Santo António, a confraria continua ativa na igreja do Pópulo, onde Santo António é objeto de devoção. Историја уметности-Историја архитектуре / Art History-History of arcihtecture

Радом Српска меморијална архитектура 1918-1955 обухваћен је релативно дуг временски период у оквиру кога су представљени разноврсни видови меморијалног градитељства, под којим се у ширем смислу подразумевају обележја, објекти, гробља, надгробници, просторне површине, историјски објекти и целине, који чувају успомену на историјске догађаје, личности и пале ратнике. Развој српског меморијалног градитељства испраћен је кроз два различита друштвено-политичка система, две државе- Краљевину Југославију и социјалистичку Југославију, у чијем саставу се налазила Србија у периоду 1918-1955. Период окупације 1941-1944 обухваћен је кроз једино репрезентативно дело меморијалног градитељства подигнуто у овом периоду, Спомен-костурницу у Смедереву. Краљевина СХС - Југославија у чији састав су ушле словенске земље некадашњи делови аустроугарске своју политику заснивала је на националној и верској равноправности свих народа. Уређење српских војничких гробаља, подизање меморијала посвећених српској војсци, и поред великих заслуга које је српска војска стекла у Првом светском рату, држава је спроводећи политику равноправности свих југословенских народа препустила српским националним удружењима, организацијама и посебно формираним oдборима. Држава је показала иницијативу за уређење појединих војничких гробаља у иностранству и подигла неколико меморијала. У међуратном периоду српскo меморијално градитељство, и поред недовољног ангажовања Државе, доживљава експанзију. У овом периоду долази до интезивног уређивања војничких гробаља и подизања костурница са црквама, капелама, маузолејима или архитектонским споменицима над њима. Уређење војничких гробаља је по први пут код нас законски регулисано што је дало посебан значај овом виду меморисања. У овом периоду кроз подизање споменика Незнаном јунаку и намеру да се подигне спомен-храм типа Пантеона, прихваћени су нови видови меморисања из европске меморијалне архитектуре. Поред репрезентативних архитектонских меморијала подигнутих на Зебрњаку, Церу, Гучеву, Споменика браниоцима Београда на Новом гробљу и других, посебан национални значај по бројности имају и други видови меморисања; обелисци, чесме, спомен-обележја, које је обично подизала локалана заједница. У међуратном периоду по први пут меморијална архитектура је прихваћена од стране архитеката и друштва као значајан вид ставралаштва, што су потврдиле изложбе студената архитектуре и Салони архитектуре. У меморијалном градитељству посебно су се истакле архитекте које су радиле при Министарству грађевина, Момир Коруновић, Николај Краснов, Василиј Андросов, као и самосталне архитекте Роман Верховској и Александар Дероко, док је значајан опус који се састоји од идејних пројеката остварио архитекта Милутин Борисављевић. Меморијали су извођени претежно у српско-византијском стилу или под утицајима академизма, мада су приметни и утицаји романтичарског експресионизма...

▼ The present dissertation ("Hybridisations between music and painting: the relationship of Morton Feldman and Mark Rothko in Rothko Chapel") has as main objective to examine the technical approach, the stylistic resources and the degree of interdisciplinary relation that establishes between the work of the American composer Morton Feldman (1926 - 1987) Rothko Chapel (1971) and the work of the same painter, also American, Mark Rothko (1903 - 1970), realized in Houston, Texas. By linking the pictorial and architectural work with the musical - due to the "autobiographical character" attributed by the composer to his piece - the research addresses its degree of hybridization, the rhetorical, narrative or imitative processes used and the possibility of classification of This interdisciplinary convergence within the scope of musical ekphrasis. Because of this, the work developed, which has a transdisciplinary character, focuses basically on the study, analysis and comparison - through similarities and / or references - of the musical and pictorial work within the North American artistic and sonorous context of Mid twentieth century. However, while the musical proposal is approached with a technical and systematic criterion of analysis of the score - from a melodic, harmonic, organological, agogical, dynamic and structural point of view, the pictorial intervention is examined not only as a site project -specific - number of paintings or panels, size, shape and technique of the same, arrangement in the architectural space, specific treatment of light - but also as a plastic disc inserted in the artistic and vital trajectory of its author. The comparative study is completed with textual and biographical contributions, especially related to Morton Feldman, given the importance they have in order to locate Rothko Chapel in a context that, beyond strictly musical, reflects the pictorial influence that the work had Of Rothko in the compositional methods of our musician. Finally, the thesis is accompanied by a self-recorded CD on Rothko Chapel, a recording that is also accessible through an online platform. ▼ Thomas Patch (1725-1782) is a relatively unknown English artist of the eighteenth century whose claim to fame so far has rested in his caricature work. He went to Rome around 1747, was banished from there in 1755 and joined the English circle in Florence where he remained until his death in 1782. Patch's work in Florence included his copying of what Vasari had said to be a fresco cycle by Giotto in the Church of the Carmine. This cycle had been damaged in a fire that broke out in the old church in 1771, and it had to be destroyed to make way for the new church that was completed in 1773. What led Patch to do this work? How successful was he? We see the influences of Hugford and Bottari and the lively interest of connoisseurship in the medieval and the Trecento. Patch's skill as a copyist is analyzed and found to be excellent. There are now only twelve fragments left of the original fresco and they have been given a variety of attributions. On the basis of dating, this paper agrees with those who reject the Giotto attribution and it is not prepared to accept the Spinello Aretino one without additional confirmation. The cycle does not appear to fit the style and character of Spinello in the period to which it is usually assigned. Recent evidence however still makes it worth while to leave the door open to Spinello though on the basis of style and spatial utilization, other artists of this period should also be considered. When compared with other Saint John the Baptist cycles, the iconography shows the master of the Manetti Chapel frescoes to have been an inventive and imaginative artist whom both Masaccio and Agnolo Gaddi thought worthy of emulating and copying. His inventiveness is seen in the fact that though he seems to have got ideas from the Peruzzi Chapel and from the doors of the Baptistery, he put his own stamp on them. His angel in flight, his headless body of Saint John, his shivering Christ and his many re-arrangements of crowd scenes give ample evidence of an innovati.ve-ness which is only surpassed by his skill at integrating his scenes. Patch's engravings therefore should form an important incentive to further assessment of the work of Spinello and his possible influence on the late Trecento and Quattrocento Italian art. They also form a pathway for the study of influences of this period on eighteenth century English art. Patch represents a whole era of connoisseurship and is a possible source of valuable character study of the English emigre community of late eighteenth century Florence. His work merits a great deal more consideration than it has so far received in the history of art.

La présente thèse tente d'aborder, pour la première fois, une analyse comparative du rôle que la musique liturgique a joué dans le processus de construction de l'image sacrée des souverains de la maison Bourbon de France et d'Espagne dans le cadre des cérémonies religieuses célébrées aux cours de Madrid et de Versailles pendant les dernières décennies de l'Ancien Régime, ainsi que du rôle que l'exemple de la Chapelle pontificale a joué dans ce processus. Le but principal de cette étude a été d’apporter un cadre conceptuel et un modèle d'analyse qui permettraient d'aborder une étude globale de la musique sacrée destinée à ces cérémonies, sous un angle plus proche de l'histoire culturelle que de la musicologie traditionnelle, mais toujours partant de l’analyse des aspects performatifs qui permettaient dévoiler l’interaction réciproque entre la musique avec le contexte cérémonial, politique et historique duquel a fait partie. Tout au loin de six chapitres on examine les éléments qui conformaient les cérémonies de la liturgie d’État, conçues à cette époque comme des représentations sacrées : les différentes scènes où avaient lieu, les acteurs, le cérémonial, ainsi que le fonctionnement des différents styles de chant utilisés pour solenniser aussi bien les cérémonies ordinaires que les extraordinaires célébrées à Rome, à Madrid et à Versailles entre 1745 et 1789. Cela comprenait non seulement les œuvres de musique sacrée produites ad hoc par les maîtres de chapelle, mais aussi d’autres musiques, comme le plain-chant, le contrepoint où le faux-bourdon, qui faisant partie de ce même système de représentation étaient parfois exécutés par l’improvisation ou la mémorisation.

This thesis attempts, for the first time, to address a comparative analysis of the role that liturgical music played in the process of building the sacred image of the sovereigns of the Bourbon House of France and Spain as part of the religious ceremonies celebrated in Madrid and Versailles during the last decades of the Ancien Régime, as well as the role that the example of the Pontifical Chapel played in this process. The main purpose of this study was to provide a conceptual framework and analytical model that would allow a global study of sacred music for these ceremonies to be approached from a perspective closer to cultural history than traditional musicology, but always starting from the analysis of the performative aspects that revealed the reciprocal interaction between music and the ceremonial, political and historical context of which it was a part. Along six chapters, we examine the elements that shaped the ceremonies of the State liturgy, conceived at that time as sacred representations: the different scenes in which they took place, the actors, the ceremonial, as well as the functioning of the different styles of singing used to solemnize both the ordinary and extraordinary ceremonies celebrated in Rome, Madrid and Versailles between 1745 and 1789. O presente trabalho, Memória e outras questões - um estudo do projeto para Jesus e os Apóstolos de Cândido Portinari no contexto da construção de Brasília, foi desenvolvido no Programa de Pós-graduação do Instituto de Artes da Universidade de Brasília e investigou o contexto relacionado ao projeto em cartão para mosaico intitulado Jesus e os Apóstolos realizado em 1957 pelo artista Cândido Portinari atendendo à solicitação do arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer que o convidara a integrar a equipe construtora da nova capital federal com uma obra que fosse disposta junto à Capela do Palácio da Alvorada. Dando embasamento às discussões em torno do projeto, que não foi executado, trabalhou-se aqui questões atinentes à memória que perpassa Jesus e os Apóstolos, tais como a memória coletiva e a seletividade da memória, definindo o que permanecerá ou o que será esquecido, encontrando apoio para isso tanto na história social quanto na antropologia.

The present work, Memory and other questions - a study of Jesus and the Apostles project by Cândido Portinari in the context of Brasíla construction, was developed in the After-graduation Program of Arts Institute of Brasília University and investigates the context related to the mosaic card project entitled Jesus and the Apostles made in 1957 by the artist Cândido Portinari at the request of the architect Oscar Niemeyer who had invited him to take partin inaugurate the new federal capital construction team with a work that would be placed in the Alvorada Palace Chapel. Giving support to the arguments around the project, that was not executed, was worked here questions related to the memory that through Jesus and the Apostles, such as the collective memory and the selectivity memory, defining what will remain or what will be forgotten, finding support for this in social history and in anthropology.

This thesis addresses the composition of the indentities through the performances produced in the celebrations of chapel in the town of Silveira Martins, located into the Fourth Colony of Italian Imigration in the Rio Grande do Sul. Celebration of chapel is an expression that denote into the own group events that happen in communities from the rural zone, place that have just a space like a little church and a hall, these events happen to honor the patron saint from this comunity. Spaces like these became privilege for the research becouse of limitation of his territory made by italians immigrants during the XIX century, combined to the growth of the memories to rebuild a colonial past and based in a mythical origin. The quest of this work is to map the celebrations of chapel and then take for the analysis five of them, also other two festive events, with the intention to make a local festive table contemplating the daily dimension. Is understood that a festive moment, that symbolize and enlarge the elements of the daily, become a product of it. The fundamentations for this research is based on the discussions about the identity, using mainly concepts about the ethnic and cultural identity contemplating studies about the identity quest front the globalization process. The analysis table is compost for the ethnographic method, as well as, analysis of the performances, mainly corporal, understood as expressive and communicative acts. Although records were used audiovisual bolstered the descriptions and analysis of aspects observed in the field. Thus, it is found that the festivals of Chapel have a multitude of related identity, such as customs, traditions, beliefs, values, habits, modes of knowledge and practices that make up the sense of identity among the group and allow to identify it as belonging to an ethnic identity. These related identity could be observed in the performances of individuals who produce the festival and among its participants. Its possible to say that te celebrations of chapel trigger strategically and resignify belonging to the italian ethnic indentity, highlighting the festival itself as a cultural performance. However, this membership iss seen as contrastive.

Esta dissertação aborda a composição de identidades através das performances produzidas nas Festas de Capela no município de Silveira Martins, pertencente à Quarta Colônia de Imigração Italiana do Rio Grande do Sul. Festa de Capela é uma expressão que indica entre o próprio grupo manifestações festivas que ocorrem nas comunidades da zona rural, espaço que agrega as edificações de uma pequena igreja e de um salão, sendo que, esta festa presta homenagem ao santo padroeiro daquela capela. Estes espaços se tornam privilegiados para a pesquisa pela compreensão de sua delimitação territorial em vias da colonização por imigrantes italianos no século XIX, juntamente com a emergência de memórias que reconstroem um passado colonial e fundamentam-se numa origem mítica. This paper seeks to understand and summarize the design methodology of restoration of the Chapel of St. Michael in São Paulo, in order to understand the attitudes of intervention that allowed her to reintegrate the community and know the procedures crucial in this new qualification. Since the goal we intend to investigate this situation that gave it importance, and list the shares of the pioneering phase of IPHAN with the current intervention. At this stage it must be demonstrated that preliminary steps and executive ended up happening simultaneously, with the working methods of empiricism, visible in the unfinished documentary research, the fragile oral records, in the absence of technicians and laboratories and also by the lack of previous experience. From the effects of history on the identity of the Monument, with interest in the outcome - in light of existing documents - we aim to understand the connections of greater importance that collaborated to develop the theme of heritage. Confronted the contents of the letters to property, attempted to understand how, in the reality of implementation, the spatial, historical and aesthetic stand out in the intervention process. Also on opposing sides of the theories of restoration, important in relation to pipelines and showing that the title of heritage makes us aware of the facts and aware of the attitudes and their consequences

Este trabalho busca conhecer e sumarizar a metodologia de projeto de restauro da Capela de São Miguel Arcanjo, em São Paulo, no propósito de entender os posicionamentos de intervenção que possibilitaram reintegrá-la à comunidade, bem como conhecer os procedimentos determinantes nesta nova qualificação. Como o objetivo pretende-se investigar esta situação que lhe conferiu importância e relacionar as ações da fase pioneira do IPHAN com as da intervenção atual. Nesta etapa deve-se demonstrar que etapas preliminares e executivas acabavam acontecendo simultaneamente, com empirismo de métodos de trabalho, visíveis nas inacabadas pesquisas documentais, nos frágeis registros orais, na ausência de técnicos e laboratórios e, ainda, pela falta de experiência anterior. A partir dos efeitos da história na identidade do Monumento, com interesse nos resultados - à luz dos documentos existentes nos propomos a entender as conexões de maior relevância que colaboraram para desenvolver o tema do patrimônio. Confrontados os conteúdos das cartas patrimoniais, tentou-se entender como, na realidade de execução, as características espaciais, históricas e estéticas se destacam no processo de intervenção. ▼ This thesis analyzes the mortars used in the construction of Guastavino tile vault assemblies through an in-depth study of St. Paul’s Chapel and observations at five other Guastavino projects. Limited research has been published that addresses the mortars used in Guastavino vaults, but the available literature indicates that only gypsum mortar and Portland cement mortar were used in their construction. Furthermore, literature establishes that vaults were assembled by installing the first layer of tiles with gypsum mortar, while the above tile layers were set in Portland cement mortar. Preservation professionals often encounter discrepancies between this assembly described in literature and the assemblies and mortars observed during restoration projects. To address these discrepancies, this thesis performed a material study at St. Paul’s Chapel, identifying the mortars and their assembly through archival review, physical observation, and cursory petrographic analysis of select samples. It was determined that at least four different types of mortars, including gypsum mortar, gypsum-lime mortar, natural cement mortar, and portland cement mortar were used in the construction of St. Paul’s Chapel. Furthermore, it was discovered that the used mortar types varied by the form and finish of different vaults at St. Paul’s Chapel. Similarly, in the supporting case studies, mortars other than gypsum mortar and portland cement mortar were identified, again varying based on the particularities of the assembly of each vault. The variety of these materials and assemblies illustrate the oversimplification of the description of Guastavino vault assemblies in published literature. This thesis therefore provides schematic section drawings of the studied vaults that identify the types of mortar used and their locations within the vault assembly. While only a fraction of the projects of the Guastavino Company were analyzed in this thesis, the chosen case studies clearly demonstrate that the company used mortars other than gypsum mortars and Portland cement mortars. Furthermore, this thesis establishes that the type of mortar used in a Guastavino project was intricately linked to the assembly method, and that both mortar and assembly varied based on the specific parameters of particular projects.

▼ Jesus Christ instructed His disciples before His death to limit the preaching of the gospel to the ‘lost sheep of the house of Israel’ (Matt 10:6). After His resurrection, however, He broadened the scope of proselytizing to all: “Make disciples of all nations” (Matt 28:18-20). This meant that the gospel should be preached everywhere and to all peoples. This mandate has come to be known by Christians as the Great Commission. Since the 1970s a new wave of churches, commonly referred to as the charismatic churches, have come to be firmly established on the religious landscape of Ghana, West Africa. One of the most prominent is the Lighthouse Chapel International (LCI). Headquartered in Accra, the LCI is a large worldwide denomination that aggressively employs the agency of church planting in its attempt to facilitate the fulfilment of the Great Commission. This study enquires into the church planting activities of the Lighthouse Chapel International with the aim of documenting the processes, principles and strategies underlying the denomination’s mission. It is hoped that this empirical analysis of the LCI will benefit newer struggling churches, particularly those within the charismatic tradition,in their efforts to spread the gospel of Christ, while providing a new self-understanding that will carry the LCIitself into the future. The study employs a qualitative methodology through the review of some relevant literature, interviews with key informants (LCI ministers, non-LCI charismatic leaders, andnon-LCI leaders conversant with the LCI church planting model), together with collated views from focus group discussions and the results of a qualitative questionnaire. The literature review on the LCI relies primarily on the sermons and writings of Heward-Mills, the founder of the denomination, which have informed the strategies and other processes in the church’s missionary work and advancement. The study reveals that, overall, the LCI’s mission strategies, including the focused emphasis on church planting, lay ministry, administrative support systems, and use of permanent church halls, have combined to create a productive and robust church planting model in Ghana. The study concludes that the fulfilment of the Great Commission must be the main preoccupation of the charismatic churches in Ghana, and that the foremost strategy for achieving this is church planting. The study recommends the development of a wellthought-out biblical and theologically based mission strategy. Church planting will be enhanced by more effective use of lay people, appropriate attention to a doctrine of loyalty, efficient administrative support systems and the building of permanent church halls. Each network of churches ought also to appoint a missions department with a named director to ensure that the missional aspect of the work of the Christian church in Ghanaremains central in its planning and activities.

The method has been tostudy literature, to visit the Cornaro chapel, and to make comparisons between pictures, texts andown experiences.The questions set out to be answered was; How has the Cornaro chapel and the Ecstasy of SaintTeresa been described and interpreted in literature of art history? What kind of pictures are beingused to illustrate the chapel? What is in focus and what is withheld in the presentation of the chapel,in text and in pictures? Is it possible to see a change, in how art historians write about the Cornarochapel, over time?Reading and comparing the texts and pictures that illustrates the literature, makes visible how thebaroque period, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Teresa av Avila and the Cornaro chapel has been presented inthe chosen literature, and answered the questions.The similarities between the Cornaro chapel and a theater stage, Bernini's interest in the theaterand his devout Catholicism, as well as the Counter-reformation's use of art to reach their goal ofmaking people more devout to Catholicism, is in focus. The erotic overtones in the sculpture groupare being withheld as well as Bernini's personality. Saint Teresa's work for the Counter reformationand how her texts and spirituality affected her contemporaries are also withheld.The pictures that illustrates the chapel in the studied literature are similar to each other, and oftenshow a close-up of the sculpture group with the saint and the angel, but also an overview of thechapel. The pictures are with no exceptions taken from a viewpoint inaccessible to a visitor of thechapel. The changes seen in the literature is that art history is becoming more contextualized.The sculpture group is not a religious theater, nor an erotic sculpture, but both at the same time.

▼ The principal aim of this administrative study is to contextualise the history of Maynooth College Chapel. The objective is to elucidate the facts and circumstances which form it's history. As the present study had not been researched to any great degree the investigation is conducted through interpretation and observation of primary source material. Three main perspectives are adopted in order to highlight the national character of the chapel. The first perspective is political in it's nature. It is developed essentially throughout the first chapter. Early legislation for the college and it's consequences for the chapel are assessed. The decisions taken to initiate and to proceed with the chapel project are reviewed. Effectively chapter one sets the scene for the following chapters. The socio-economic perspect is the second perspective employed in the study. It sets up the background framework for the second chapter. This chapter deals primarily with the funding of the great edifice. The erection of a chapel worthy of the national college was a large undertaking. This chapel was the first college building erected by means of public subscription. This chapter reviews the appeals and the collections made towards the chapel fund. The relationship between Catholic Ireland and the college is thereby appraised. The key personalities associated with the fund-raising drive are evaluated. Essentially, this chapter examines the interests and investments of all this involved in the chapel project. The last perspective adopted is that of a physiographical kind. This is highlighted throughout chapter three. The chapter sets out to outline the distinctive features of the college chapel, which have set it apart from contemporary chapels. The architectural style of J.J. McCarthy (architect of the chapel) is appraised. Each stage of actual construction from the chapel's inception to it's completion is assessed. This chapter also examines the arduous task of completing the tower and the spire. It concludes on a note of a satisfying accomplishment.

Cette thèse porte sur la chapelle cimétériale du monastère de Bačkovo (Bulgarie), étudiée dans le contexte des églises sépulcrales du monde byzantin médiéval. Parmi les rares monuments de ce type architectural, cette chapelle se singularise notamment par son décor peint datant de l’époque médiobyzantine. Conservant certains thèmes iconographiques à caractère exceptionnel, son importance résulte également de la cohérence parfaite entre le décor, la fonction de l’édifice et le rite célébré. À la lumière des données d’une sélection de typika byzantins, complétées par des sources liturgiques, nous nous attachons, d’une part, à clarifier le contexte de fondation de la chapelle cimétériale, et, d’autre part, à réévaluer sa place unique dans la vie monastique d’antan. Notre investigation vise aussi à réexaminer la classification architecturale à laquelle le monument fut longtemps rattaché, celle des « églises sépulcrales bulgares », avancée par André Grabar. De plus, nous proposons une analyse iconographique détaillée de l’intégralité de son décor peint. Une attention particulière est portée aux représentations à forte connotation eschatologique, envisagées par le biais des spécificités fonctionnelles de l’édifice, liées à la célébration d’offices funèbres et commémoratifs. En outre, nous développons une analyse comparative avec les programmes iconographiques des principaux monuments sépulcraux médio- et tardodyzantins. L’apport de cette thèse consiste ainsi en la recontextualisation de la chapelle cimétériale bačkovienne, sur les plans à la fois architectural, iconographique et liturgique.

The subject of this thesis is the cemetery chapel of the Bačkovo monastery considered in the context of the sepulchral buildings of the Byzantine medieval world. Among the rare monuments of this architectural type, it stands out by its decoration dating from the middle byzantine period. Conserving some exceptional iconographic topics, its importance ensues also from the perfect coherence between decoration, function and ritual. With reference to a selection of byzantine typika, completed by liturgical sources, I try to clarify the context of foundation of the Bačkovo cemetery chapel and to reassess its place in the monastic life of yesteryear. The purpose of this investigation is also to reconsider the architectural classification of this building which has been refered to as the “églises sépulcrales bulgares” for a long time as mentioned by André Grabar. Furthermore I offer a detailed iconographic study of its entire fresco programme focusing especially on the representations with strong eschatological connotation, examined in the light of the functional particularities of the edifice, related to the celebration of funeral and commemoration services. In addition I give a comparative analysis of the monument following the iconographic programmes of the most significant sepulchral monuments from the middle and late byzantine period.
