▼ The mechanisms which cause galaxies to form and evolve each leave behind distinct structural markers in their wake. Dynamically hot processes (e.g., monolithic collapse, hierarchical merging) give rise to pressure-supported spheroidal structures, including elliptical galaxies and classical bulges. By contrast, dynamically cold processes (e.g., gas accretion, AGN splashback) lead to flattened rotationally-supported disk-like structures, often found on their own or as part of a spiral galaxy. If left in isolation for a sufficient length of time, secular evolutionary processes cause the formation of a bar-like structure within the disk, precipitating the genesis of a rotationally-supported pseudo-bulge. Robustly measuring galaxy structure enables us to ascertain the relative importance of these competing evolutionary mechanisms and; in so doing, help broaden our understanding of how the Universe around us came to be. This thesis explores the relation between galaxy structure, morphology and stellar mass. In the first part I present single-Sérsic two-dimensional model fits to 167,600 galaxies modelled independently in the ugrizYJHK bandpasses using reprocessed Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven (SDSS DR7) and UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Large Area Survey (UKIDSS LAS) imaging data available via the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) data base. In order to facilitate this study, we developed Structural Investigation of Galaxies via Model Analysis (SIGMA): an automated wrapper around several contemporary astronomy software packages. We confirm that variations in global structural measurements with wavelength arise due to the effects of dust attenuation and stellar population/metallicity gradients within galaxies. In the second part of this thesis we establish a volume-limited sample of 3,845 galaxies in the local Universe and visually classify these galaxies according to their morphological Hubble type. We find that single-Sérsic photometry accurately reproduces the morphology luminosity functions predicted in the literature. We employ multi-component Sérsic profiling to provide bulge-disk decompositions for this sample, allowing for the luminosity and stellar mass to be divided between the key structural components: spheroids and disks. Grouping the stellar mass in these structures by the evolutionary mechanisms that formed them, we find that hot-mode collapse, merger or otherwise turbulent mechanisms account for ~46% of the total stellar mass budget, cold-mode gas accretion and splashback mechanisms account for ~48% of the total stellar mass budget and secular evolutionary processes for ~6.5% of the total stellar mass budget in the local (z<0.06) Universe. ▼ As recent high-profile data breaches illustrate, an organization that complies with information security control frameworks can also suffer from successful attacks and the subsequent erosion of trust. Information security frameworks used in the federal, payment, and health care industries use a core catalogue of security controls to standardize practices and facilitate assessment. In theory, an organization implementing these standard controls and practices would maintain sufficient security to protect sensitive data. However, these catalogues of controls require resources to implement and change slowly compared to the evolution of technology and threats. Viewed as a static set of rules in a dynamic complex system, the implementation of catalogues of controls may not create predictable outcomes, or act as reliable indicators of the quality of an organization’s security program. I used a case study approach to analyze an organization’s security outcomes during a period when control catalogue implementation transitioned from a best practice to a regulatory mandate I analyzed the organization through the perspective of a complex adaptive system, identifying the complex properties of the organization and its information security team as they endeavored to ensure strict compliance with the control catalogues. I collected data on factors related to the organization’s security outcomes, as well as finances, strategy, and governance. Despite significant changes in IT intensity, strategy, and corporate leadership, the security outcomes faltered and recovered, as emergent processes evolved from the dynamic environment. The compliance results, however, were ambiguous. The formal third-party compliance assessment presented outcomes that overstated the impact of isolated controls from the catalogue, while failing to highlight the broader issues related to organizational risk. This prevented the compliance assessment from representing the true state of security of the organization’s systems. I conclude that the current method of assessing the quality of an organization’s information security program against a control catalogue does not provide sufficient information to establish meaningful trust between organizations. Alternate method that requires a broader perspective of risk may improve the reliability of assessments and provide a more meaningful method to communicate trust. ▼ Conversion of card catalogues to a computerized catalogue, called retrospective conversion or RECON, is the primary hurdle of effective library automation. There are several options for RECON, but recent advances in OCR technology make it a prominent alternative. This thesis has mainly examined technical feasibility of the OCR technology for RECON with particular reference to Addis Ababa University libraries' union catalogue. The thesis reviews the various options for RECON in the context of Addis Ababa University Library System. It also reviews technological advancements of optical scanning and OCR technology stressing on document scanning and OCR with particular reference to their application in libraries, particularly RECON. An introduction to the Addis Ababa University Library System gives an overview of the library system with particular reference to its cataloguing department and cataloguing practices followed therein, and automation plan of the library system. Two sets of catalogue cards, each consisting 115 added up to 230, were chosen from the union catalogue for this study. The sets of cards consisted of main entries made under name of personal author (40 each), under title (40 each), and corporate body (35 each). A prototype program, called PABBE, was written in C++ using the first set of cards. The various steps include: scanning and conversion of the cards to ASCII text files, analysing of the files, manual editing of the files, called preprocessing, if necessary, writing and running the program creating output records consisting of each bibliographic item preceded by an appropriate field identifier. It was noted that the success of the prototype depends much on the accuracy of OCR software, consistency of information on card catalogues, and quality of card catalogues. The prototype was tested with the second set of catalogue cards; and the results are discussed. It was found out that the performance of the prototype program is encouraging. The thesis also highlights implementation strategy for the RECON using OCR technology. Finally, some conclusions and recommendations for further studies are forwarded. ▼ Although quasar spectra appear remarkably similar, subtle systematic differences are well- known and are linked to the physical conditions in the emitting regions. This thesis char- acterizes the properties of quasar optical and UV spectral features and reveals some of their underlying physical causes by analyzing large spectroscopic datasets from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We first examine the narrow-line region using four optical emission lines with a range of ionization potentials (IPs) using a sample of 16,027 quasars with redshift z ≤ 0.75. We bin the sample using the continuum luminosity and the Hβ width to constrain the accretion rates and black hole masses and create composite spectra from objects in each bin. The luminosities of the high IP lines are constant with redshift consistent with no evolution in the quasar spectral energy distribution (SED) or the host galaxy ISM illuminated by the continuum. In contrast, the [O II] line becomes stronger at higher redshifts pointing to an enhanced star formation contributing to the [O II] at higher redshifts. In the UV, we explore using unsupervised clustering (specifically the K-means algorithm) in searching for structure in the parameter space of quasar spectral measurements. We use measurements of 4,110 objects from the Paˆris et al. (2014) Catalog and perform K-means on the equivalent widths (EWs), and the red- and blue-half-width at half-maxima of Mg II, C IV, and C III]and use objects in each of the clusters to generate composite spectra. We find that quasars with larger C IV blueshifts and smaller EWs have softer ionizing radiation. This result is particularly interesting when seen using C III]. Next, we use a sample of 2,683 broad absorption line quasars from the Gibson et al. (2009) catalog. We apply K-means using the EWs and minimum and maximum outflow velocities of the C IV absorption trough and generate composite spectra from objects in each of the clusters. We find that objects with deep and broad C IV troughs are more likely to be variable and to show absorption from lower ionization transitions. Conversely, objects with shallower C IV troughs are less likely to be variable and have lower fractions of absorption from lower ionization lines. We examine this behaviour in light of properties such as SED hardness and intrinsic reddening.

▼ The movement from online catalogues to search and discovery systems has not addressed the goals of true resource discoverability. While catalogue user studies have focused on user search and discovery processes and experiences, and construction and manipulation of search queries, little insight is given to how searchers interact with search features of next generation catalogues. Better understanding of user experiences can help guide informed decisions when selecting and implementing new systems. In this study, fourteen graduate students completed a set of information seeking tasks using UIUC's VuFind installation. Observations of these interactions elicited insight into both search feature use and user understanding of the function of features. Participants used the basic search option for most searches. This is because users understand that basic search draws from a deep index that always gives results regardless of search terms; and because it is convenient, appearing at every level of the search, thus reducing effort and shortening search time. Participants rarely used advanced search but selected it as a secondary alternative, especially when searching for local library or print collections. Participants understand an online catalogue as a list of library holdings that provides access to local print collections; and offers options for refining voluminous result sets. Participants frequently used author, title, subject, keywords; and citation, search within, print, save, e-mailing, fulltext download that offered clear alternatives to searching and search reformulation respectively. Such features are familiar to users from past search experiences and puts them in control of the system. Participants understand the function of VuFind features based on their perception and preference that: VuFind will give relevant and current information because of the large collection size at UIUC; because of their prior experiences with quick, minimal effort search reformulation strategies; and VuFind‘s large result sets, presented in systematic and logical order. The evidence confirms that information tasks guide and shape the way searchers select and use system features. Participant search processes change during and after using a specific system. ▼ Mergers of higher education institutions in South Africa have had a significant impact on the higher education sector. Unfortunately, libraries are not often regarded as a key component in a merger between two institutions. Rather as a result of the merger, libraries have to find how they fit into the broader picture. Very little research has been published in terms of the effects these mergers have had on library catalogues. In this study, the merging of the library catalogues of the Edminson Library at the Edgewood College of Education in Pinetown and the E.G. Malherbe Library of the University of Natal on the Durban campus was researched to determine how these library catalogues were merged and how successful this process was. To meet the objectives of this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the major role-players who were involved in, or affected by this process. Considering that this was the first time that a study of this nature pertaining to the merger of library catalogues was conducted in South Africa, a literature review was conducted to investigate similar studies involving library catalogue mergers. Important themes from the literature were identified. Unpublished material such as minutes of meetings and annual reports formed an integral part of the information gathering process. An analysis of the information collected at the interviews was done through content analysis. The evidence from all these sources finally resulted in conclusions and the lessons learnt throughout the process of the merger. It was found that the merging of library catalogues should never be underestimated in terms of complexity and the volume of work involved. The merging of library catalogues involves extensive commitment of senior staff and must be organised to ensure that the service to existing users is not hampered during the procedure. The findings indicated that, while there had been a lack of appropriate management of the merger both employees and management had learnt from, and developed in, the process. The merging of library catalogues seldom occurs more than once in a librarian's term of office and therefore it is imperative that managers involved in this process ensure that they do it right the first time. Library catalogue mergers do not necessarily lead to savings, which is contrary to what is sometimes assumed by the initiators of mergers. The lessons learnt and the recommendations made can be used for future library catalogue mergers.

The work lists chronologically a number of operas, operettas, the various forms of comic musical theatre, such as pantomime, burlesque, and extravaganza, forms of lyric and classical drama, dramatic cantata, and the incidental music written for plays and melodramas since early colonial days. Details are given of performances, history, musical and dramatic features, with contemporary references, to comprise a bibliography of sources, many of which have not been previously examined. The narrative history shows, first, the patterns in the imported repertory from the earliest records of Australian colonial theatres to the coming of commercial and touring opera companies in the 19th century which gradually consolidated a standard repertory modelled on the Anglo-European theatre. Supporting Documentation gives data on theatres, performers, and the works thus accumulated. Similar patterns of development are found in North American opera and in other art forms in Australia. Throughout the work, some reference is made to the interplay of tradition and novelty, popular forms of entertainment, 'folk', and 'fine' art, imported and indigenous materials and also to aspects of public taste and attitudes, the development of musical and theatrical institutions, and relevant social, political, and economic conditions. Second, it surveys the field of opera and musical theatre written in Australia, tracing within it elements of 18th century comic opera, parody and burlesque, serious Italian opera, ballad opera, pantomime and other forms of light opera, through the rise of romantic opera and imitations of French operette and the Savoy operas. Towards the end of the 19th century, it finds new directions in choralism, lyric dramas, and large-scale dramatic works in a post-Wagnerian style, and discovers Australian examples in the early 20th century of Italian realist and Celtic mythological national schools. Third, it examines attempts to find an Australian identity through schemes for a national opera, and asks why these failed, especially in terms of the relationship of the Press to artists and audiences in the 1920s. By recalling the image of Australia presented on the late-18th century overseas stage, it recapitulates the context, chronology, and chief components of the process of acculturation by which overseas traditions became modified, distorted, or realized in Australian opera. ▼ This thesis is a study of the art of Hilda Rix Nicholas, an Australian painter who constructed what appeared to be a successful career in the period between the wars. Her achievements were impressive: she held several solo exhibitions and showed her work in a large number of group shows, and in 1926 became an associate of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Despite her accomplishments, however, Rix Nicholas has been virtually ignored by art historians. Often mentioned, but rarely discussed, her work, like that of a number of women artists, has been excluded from and marginalised in the writing of Australian art history. In seeking to account for the reasons why Rix Nicholas's work failed to achieve any lasting recognition in Australia the thesis examines the ways in which she constructed her career. In Paris, before World War 1 she attuned her art to the standards of the Salon, appropriating its genres, particularly the French peasant tradition, as models of artistic excellence, models which underpinned the emergence of her distinctive Australian imagery in the early 1920s. In Australia, Rix Nicholas conscientiously set out to represent the national landscape in her work. Describing herself as 'the man for the job' she attempted to establish her career within a milieu where the rules of representation were controlled by men. In doing so, she challenged the masculinist framework of the cultural and artistic establishment, as well as the idea that the representation of the nation was the exclusive domain of male painters like Arthur Streeton and Hans Heysen. Furthermore, Rix Nicholas painted several pictures of women in the bush, and dared to suggest that women had been equal partners in the formation of the imagined community of the nation. Refusing to acknowledge the gendered boundaries of the Australian art world, she constructed a position for herself that was at odds with the prescribed role of a woman painter, a role which was acknowledged by most women artists working in Australia. Like her male colleagues, Rix Nicholas distrusted the modern movement and was sceptical about the involvement of women artists in it. As far as she could see women modernists had accepted a subordinate position within the artistic hierarchy, a position Rix Nicholas was not prepared to recognize. Her assertive affirmation of her rights meant that her artistic practice occupied a difficult and ambivalent position. Existing outside the mainstream of both male and female representation she challenged the establishment on too many levels, making it virtually impossible for her to achieve any lasting recognition in Australia.

▼ Cette thèse analyse certaines caractéristiques majeures d'architectures non conventionnelles, construites sur les bases de l'imaginaire. Nous en avons tenté un premier répertoire, non exhaustif, afin d'évaluer leur potentiel pour la pensée architecturale d'aujourd'hui. C'est sous l'expression architectures outsiders que nous regroupons les exemples documentés. Cette collection d'œuvres est étudiée sous l'angle des folies de l'architecture. Parmi nos découvertes, ce sont le Palais Idéal de Ferdinand Cheval et le Jardin-coquillage de Bedan Litnianski en France, les archisculptures de Richard Greaves au Québec, puis la Tour Eben-Ezer de Robert Garcet en Belgique, qui ont été au centre de nos observations. Notre projet original était de formuler une définition de cette architecture outsider sur la base de ses caractéristiques propres. Son ancrage historique remonte à la Renaissance, lorsque les premières distinctions entre démarches rationnelles et pathologiques ont commencé à imprégner les systèmes de normes et de valeurs de l'époque. L'image de la grotte, entre mythe et raison, est l'un des premiers témoins de cette rupture : la référence au grotesque ouvre bien sûr à l'hybridité des figures, à l'arabesque, au trompe-l'œil, au décor chargé de multiplicité, mais surtout à un élargissement des possibilités d'expression émotive et symbolique qu'ont par la suite partagé les romantiques, les expressionnistes et les surréalistes. À la source des architectures outsiders, on retrouve en effet la capacité de l'architecture à émouvoir. Il devient possible d'envisager l'idéal des recherches expressionnistes, qui visaient à produire un impact émotif et expressif direct de l'architecture sur ses occupants. L'un de nos axes d'investigation a consisté à considérer les avancées de la psychanalyse au sujet des théories esthétiques, notamment avec la publication des livres L'Art chez les fous (1907) par Marcel Réja, et Expressions de la folie (1922) par Hans Prinzhorn. Notons également l'importance inestimable des travaux de Gaston Bachelard, qui a investi les théories de Gustav Jung à partir des caractéristiques de l'espace dans son ouvrage La poétique de l'espace (1958). L'architecture des folies, des fabriques de jardin, celle des CoBrA, puis celle de Jean Dubuffet, nous ont servi de précédents pour interroger la fonction première de l'architecture, en particulier reposer, à la lumière de nos observations, trois questions fondamentales : déterminer si la fonction poétique et symbolique de l'architecture précède la fonction pratique; évaluer dans quelle mesure son essence réside, en ultime analyse, à son enracinement mythologique; définir l'importance de l'habiter dans la détermination architecturale d'une œuvre. Virtualna komunikacija je vse bolj razširjen medij na vseh področjih, z njo se informacije širijo hitreje, ceneje in intenzivneje. Veliko posameznikov in podjetij se tako odloča za spletne strani, na katerih predstavljajo svoje polizdelke, produkte in storitve. Priprava spletne strani lahko poteka na dva načina. Prvi način vključuje predznanje računalniškega programiranja, drugi pa vnaprej pripravljene spletne strani, kjer posameznik brez predznanja programiranja oblikuje svojo spletno stran. Izdelava spletne strani lahko temelji na že določeni temi, ki si jo oblikovalec izbere, ali pa spletno stran ustvari s pomočjo prilagojenih orodij. Cilj magistrskega dela je predstavitev lastnih izdelkov s pomočjo spletnega medija – virtualne spletne strani oz. portfelja in PDF kataloga. V magistrskem delu se bom osredotočila na cel postopek izdelave spletne strani, portfelja in PDF kataloga. Namen izdelave le-teh je predstavitev lastnih izdelkov, zato morajo virtualne predstavitve imeti ustrezno estetsko vrednost in ustrezno vsebino.

Virtual communication is becoming more common medium in all areas. With it information is disseminated faster, cheaper and more intensively. Many individuals and businesses are also choosing a web site on which they present their products, semi-finished products and services. Preparation of the web site can be done in two ways. The first method involves knowledge of computer programming, while other methods include a prefabricated website where individuals with no prior knowledge of programming create their own website. Web page design can be based on pre-determined specific topic, chosen by designer or it can be done with the help of customized tools. The aim of this dissertation is the presentation of my own products through online media, i.e. virtual websites or portfolio and PDF catalog. In this thesis, I will focus on the whole process of making a website, digital portfolio and PDF catalog. The purpose of making them is the presentation of my own products, which is why these virtual presentations must also have a suitable esthetic value and relevant content.

▼ This thesis presents a critical history of the gallerist as publisher from 1900 to the present. Through a series of case studies of gallerists and their publications, I chart the forms and functions that gallery publishing has taken over the last century and explore the key relationships and issues within this strand of publishing practice. Despite diversity in the content, publishing context, and means of producing these publications, I argue that the history of publishing by gallerists is characterised by the overarching themes of promotion, innovation, collaboration, and democratisation. I explore these themes across a chronological structure, focusing on selected examples of significant and sustained publishing activity led by gallerists from 1900 to the present day in Europe and North America. Beginning in 1900 with the livres d'artiste of Ambroise Vollard and Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in Paris, I explore the reasons why gallerists were motivated to publish and how publishing became an essential facet of a gallerist's professional practice. I follow with case studies of publications by gallerists Jeanne Bucher, Aimé Maeght, Seth Siegelaub and David Zwirner. The five chapters of the thesis are structured in order to allow for both a thorough analysis of an individual publication or publishing series as well as an examination of the contemporary publishing context within which they were produced. In my selection of case studies, I analyse examples that demonstrate the various forms and functions of publishing produced by gallerists: the livre d'artiste; the artists' novel; the gallery magazine; the catalogue as exhibition; and books of art writing. Accompanying these individual case studies is a broader analysis of the ways in which gallerists both influenced and took inspiration from the wider context of art publishing. Despite the wealth of research on the history of artists' books and magazines in the twentieth century, this thesis forms the first scholarly account of the impact of gallerist publishing on the development of modern and contemporary art publishing. I draw on existing research in the wider field of art publishing and combine it with interviews, archival material and personal accounts of the gallerists in order to re-evaluate the significance of gallerists and their publications in the history of art publishing. While I have consulted a number of archives and exhibitions over the course of this project, at the core of my research are the collections held by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Library and Archive and the thesis is intended, in large part, to reflect the nature of those collections.

▼ Authority control is the backbone of the library catalogue and therefore a critical library activity. Experienced staff create authority records to assist users in their quest for information. The focus of this study is on authority control as a means of co-operation in academic library consortia using a union catalogue maintained by a Central Office for Authority Control. Literature studies were conducted on three sub-problems: the development of academic library consortia in South Africa, and various forms, characteristics and functions of academic library consortia in general; the characteristics, principals and objectives of authority control; and the functions of union catalogues with special reference to the role of Z39.50 within virtual union catalogues. The conclusion was that existing and new authority records should be made available as widely as possible within consortia through a union catalogue. It is however a partial solution, because not all the libraries within the consortium have the expertise to create new authority records. Two empirical studies were conducted. A cost analysis was done to determine the cost of creating and changing authority records within academic library consortia in South Africa, in order to choose a system within which authority control can be performed effectively and speedily. Secondly, a questionnaire was sent to libraries in the United States to gather information on their experiences with regard to authority control, library co-operation in general, and virtual union catalogues. The United States was the natural choice because it could be regarded as the birthplace of modern library consortia. Inferences drawn from the information received was used to develop the structure and functions for a Central Office for Authority Control in academic library consortia in South Africa. It was found that authority control within an academic library consortium using a union catalogue could be conducted most cost-effectively and timeously through such a Central Office for Authority Control. The purpose of the Central Office would be to co-ordinate authority control within the consortium. Pooling available resources within the consortium would keep the cost of authority control as low as possible. Libraries with the required infrastructure and expertise would have the opportunity to create authority records on behalf of other libraries and be compensated for their services. Through such a Central Office more authority records created according to mutually accepted standards would be available for sharing within the consortium. A partir do final dos anos 90, os centros de imagens de sensoriamento remoto de todo o mundo passaram a converter seus dados para acesso online, tornando-os disponíveis em páginas na Internet chamadas catálogos de imagens. O problema é que cada um desses centros, disponibiliza independentemente seus dados. Como as máquinas de busca na Internet não foram projetadas para descobrir dados geográficos, fica a cargo do usuário, as tediosas tarefas de encontrar as fontes de dados relevantes, interagir isoladamente com cada uma delas e combinar os dados das múltiplas fontes manualmente. Neste contexto, seria desejável haver uma porta de entrada comum (geoportal), de onde os vários centros de imagens espalhados pelo mundo pudessem ser acessados, tornando transparente ao usuário as singularidades de cada um. O foco desse trabalho, portanto, será na proposta de um geoportal que seja capaz de integrar os catálogos dos diferentes centros de imagens, sem que os centros precisem migrar suas arquiteturas atuais para uma arquitetura específica. Para isso, partimos da hipótese que uma arquitetura de mediação é uma forma flexível e eficiente de construir um geoportal global para imagens de sensoriamento remoto. Os três componentes dessa arquitetura: portal, mediador e fontes de dados, serão analisados e especificados. A tecnologia de web services será avaliada como a solução que implementará essa arquitetura. A prova de conceito será um experimento que integrará os dados CBERS distribuídos pelo INPE em um geoportal existente (eoPortal), para validar o uso da arquitetura de mediação e analisar os aspectos positivos e as deficiências desse geoportal.

At the end of the 1990 s decade, the remote sensing images centers around the world began to allow online access to their data, making it available on Internet pages called images catalogues. The problem, however, is that each of these centers divulges their data independently. And as the Internet search tools have not been designed to locate geographic data, the tedious work of nding the relevant data sources, of interacting with each one of them separately and of manually combining the multiple sources is left to the user. In this context, we consider that a common geoportal is necessary. This portal would provide access to the various data centers around the world. The objective of this work, therefore, is to propose a geoportal capable of integrating the catalogues of the dierent images centers without these centers having to migrate their current computational architectures to a specic architecture. In this work, the mediator architecture is considered a exible and ecient way of building a global geoportal for remote sensing images. The three components of this architecture, portal, mediator and data sources, will be analyzed and specied. In my thesis I attempt, through close reading and with the major catalogues of proper names as my basic reference tool, to survey the epic geography of De Bello Ciuili and to contribute to a register of poetics of Lucan’s epic space. The geographical component is a crucial indicator of the wider concept of Lucan’s epic universe and the conclusive assessment of its poetic physiognomy. Called upon to comply with the intensely idiosyncratic nature of the poem and its anti-epic aesthetic and poetological orientations, it does not simply fulfill its referential function as a static and decorative background of the narrative action, but it rather acquires a leading role, becomes an agent itself and functions as a causal force over events and storytelling. Lucan’s geography is a claustrophobic geography enclosing the civil-war impiety. Within this tightly closed setting the inherent pathologies of the Roman character are fueled by the universal presence of war and replenished constantly in the entropy of the endless regeneration of civil war. Even when, at the end of the world and history, the proper conditions for the restarting of a new historical cycle are created, the memories and the seeds of moral guilt of the past are always present, condemning at the outset any such attempt, in order to recycle the same tragic destiny. At the same time, Lucan’s civil-war landscape is formed into an integrally symbolic space that is not merely the natural extension of the dystopian political landscape of the turbulent first century BCE. More than this, on Lucan’s disintegrated and fragmented epic landscape is indelibly inscribed the violence and the chaos of the civil wars, the collapse of the institutions and moral values, the political and ideological impasse, the personal and collective loss. Geography thus becomes part of the overall poetic message, holding the cornerstone position in the poetics of the civil-war nefas.

Στην διατριβή μου επιχειρώ μέσα από μία συστηματική και εκ του σύνεγγυς προσέγγιση του κειμένου και με βασικό εργαλείο αναφοράς τους μείζονες καταλόγους ονομάτων να αναλύσω την επική γεωγραφία του De Bello Ciuili και να συνεισφέρω στην καταγραφή μιας ποιητικής του λουκάνειου επικού χώρου. Η γεωγραφική συνιστώσα αποτελεί κρίσιμο δείκτη για την ευρύτερη σύλληψη του επικού σύμπαντος του Λουκανού και την τελική αποτίμηση της ποιητικής του φυσιογνωμίας. Καλούμενη να συμμορφωθεί με τον έντονα ιδιοσυγκρασιακό χαρακτήρα του έργου και τους αντι-επικούς αισθητικούς και ποιητολογικούς προσανατολισμούς του, δεν εκπληρώνει απλώς την αναφορική λειτουργία της ως στατικού, διακοσμητικού υπόβαθρου της αφηγηματικής δράσης, αλλά αντιθέτως αποκτά πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο, γίνεται η ίδια φορέας δράσης και λειτουργεί ως αιτιακή δύναμη πάνω στα γεγονότα και την αφήγηση. ▼ Ce mémoire met en lumière l'inspiration du milieu scientifique bourgeois sur l'artiste britannique John Martin (1789-1854) pour la mise en marché de son art. En s'appuyant sur les valeurs libérales du libre-marché et en se nourrissant du mythe du self-made man, Martin visait une prolifique carrière alors que le milieu institutionnel de la Royal Academy demeurait distant à l'égard de son art. En premier lieu, nous exposerons les raisons esthétiques et philosophiques qui empêchèrent Martin de pouvoir compter sur l'appui de la Royal Academy pour assurer son succès professionnel. Nous analyserons la production artistique de Martin et définirons l'interprétation nouvelle de la peinture d'histoire qu'il proposa, différente du cadre néoclassique prescrit par Reynolds dans ses Discours. De manière à mieux cerner ce conflit idéologique, nous mettrons aussi en relief les initiatives de la Royal Academy pour obtenir un soutien étatique et l'art de Martin, conçu en fonction du libre-marché de l'art. En deuxième lieu, nous nous pencherons sur les principaux outils de mise en marché de Martin : les Descriptive Catalogues. En proposant une étude de leur forme, de leur contenu et de leur fonction, nous soulignerons les différences de ces catalogues avec les imprimés d'artistes contemporains, mais également leurs similitudes avec les documents qui accompagnaient les expositions scientifiques et les panoramas. Ces ressemblances nous permettront de bien saisir l'expérience visuelle que Martin cherchait à proposer au public. En troisième lieu, nous traiterons du milieu scientifique de l'époque et des valeurs libérales qu'il véhiculait pour comprendre comment l'essor des sciences appliquées fit naître le mythe du self-made man, outil de propagande bourgeoise. En nous basant sur Self-Help de Samuel Smiles, les préceptes de ce mythe seront mis en lumière par l'orientation que Martin donna à sa carrière professionnelle, tant du côté de son implication dans le génie civil avec ses plans d'aménagement urbain que dans la promotion de sa carrière, via ses interventions dans la presse et le Select Committee on Arts and Manufacture de 1835-1836.

Fils d’un modeste peintre sur porcelaine, Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) suit la voie ouverte vingt ans plus tôt par son frère Félix, Grand Prix de peinture en 1844, en remportant en 1865 le Prix de Rome de sculpture. L’artiste pose ainsi le premier jalon d’une très brillante carrière. Médaillé d’honneur au Salon de 1878 puis membre de l’Académie des beaux-arts dès 1884, Ernest Barrias devient l’un des sculpteurs les plus célèbres de sa génération et une personnalité éminente du milieu artistique parisien. Intéressé par toutes les manifestations de son art, il est l’auteur de nombreux monuments, participe à quelques-uns des plus importants chantiers de la Troisième République et s’emploie, comme beaucoup de ses confrères, à concilier les beaux-arts et les arts décoratifs. Abondant et éclectique, son œuvre témoigne de l’extraordinaire développement de la sculpture dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle et en révèle certaines évolutions stylistiques et iconographiques. Barrias reste toute sa vie attaché à une tradition sculpturale naturaliste et figurative qu’il s’applique à transmettre aux élèves qui fréquentent son atelier de l’École des beaux-arts jusqu’à sa mort en 1905. Vivement critiqué par certains de ses contemporains puis tombé dans l’oubli comme beaucoup de ses confrères, le sculpteur n’avait jusqu’à présent été l’objet d’aucune étude. Notre thèse se propose de reconstituer sa biographie, d’analyser en parallèle l’évolution de son œuvre en le replaçant dans le contexte artistique de l’époque, et de constituer le catalogue exhaustif de son corpus.

Louis Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) was the son of a modest cloth and porcelain painter. He followed the footsteps of his elder brother Felix, Grand Prix of painting in 1844, and won in 1865 the Prix de Rome of sculpture. This was the first step to a brilliant career. Ernest Barrias rapidly became one of the most famous sculptors of his time and one of the leading members of Paris artistic community. He was awarded a medal of honor in the 1878 Salon de Paris, and became member of the Beaux Arts academy as early as 1884. His interest in all facets of his art led him to design numerous monuments, and he took part in some of the most important projects of the Third Republic. As many of his contemporary artists, he struggled to reconcile fine arts with decorative arts. His abundant and eclectic work testifies to the then extraordinary development of sculpture, and reveals some of the stylistic evolutions and most preferred themes of his time. Barrias was committed throughout his whole life to a naturalist and figurative tradition, which he taught to his students in his studio of the École des Beaux Arts until his death in 1905. Barrias was heavily criticized in his final years and then almost left into oblivion, along with many of his contemporary artists. The sculptor was the subject of no former thesis. This study reconstructs his biography, analyzes the evolution of his work in the artistic context of the period, and collect all his work in a complete catalogue.

▼ Eastwoodhill Arboretum at Ngatapa, near Gisborne, New Zealand, was developed by the late William Douglas Cook (1884-1967). Between 1920 and 1960, Cook planted an extensive range of exotic woody trees, shrubs and climbers throughout 65 hectares of the 130 hectare property. Considered by many to be an important collection in New Zealand, the Arboretum deteriorated during Cook's latter years due to diminishing time and resources for maintenance. An Act of Parliament in 1975 established the Eastwoodhill Trust Board and empowered them to 'maintain and develop the property as an arboretum'. Under the Board's direction, a clearing strategy was initiated to solve the problems of overcrowding and poor plant condition in the Arboretum and to establish a catalogue of the collection. To meet their obligations under the Act, the Trust Board had to focus their management on the plant collection. The biological value of the Arboretum had to be sustained, particularly with respect to issues of conservation and biodiversity. The visual value of the Arboretum, an important factor for attracting public support, had deteriorated and required intervention. Moreover, as the landscape of the Arboretum was not a natural system and lacked self-regulating processes for renewal of important plants or plant groupings, systematic management was needed to sustain the collection within this human-made landscape. The Trust Board's efforts to address these issues were hampered by a lack of resources and appropriate data. This research reports the results of an extensive landscape management study of the collection and develops and characterises the data and management processes needed for long term management of the biological value of the Arboretum. Although management frameworks and processes for landscape management have been reported in the literature, most operate at scales inappropriate for single sites and none focus upon the human-made landscape of an arboretum. Thus, while common characteristics of these processes (e.g. inventory, evaluation, development of goals and strategies) provided a basic framework, their application to an arboretum required development. A complete and current inventory of the plant collection was made. The Arboretum was mapped at 1:200 using a grid square method, and a catalogue formed listing every plant in the collection. A second catalogue recorded the extensive range of accessions that had previously been in the collection but which no longer existed. In addition, about 1200 herbarium samples were made, two potential database formats developed for the data, and a record of management history formulated. Although the inventory showed that the collection was extensive, its importance could only be established through an evaluation. As an extensive literature search failed to locate a suitable process for evaluating a plant collection on a single site, a novel process was proposed that evaluated the site using two key concepts, significance and condition, and linked this evaluation to the goals of the Arboretum.…
