▼ The PhD study presented in this thesis sets out to address the question: How and why does household car ownership change over time? This question is justified on the basis that the study of car ownership has traditionally been dominated by cross-sectional, quantitative analyses. It is argued that complementary qualitative, longitudinal methods have the potential to generate explanatory insights into the underlying process through which household car ownership states arise and change over time. Accordingly, the study employed a novel flexible two stage research design. Stage one involved 15 in-depth retrospective biographical interviews with members of zero, one and two car owning households. An inductive thematic analysis led to the development of a new dynamic framework for understanding the general process of household car ownership change. Car ownership changes are triggered by life events which alter roles/relationships, spatial contexts and lifestyle preferences. Life events lead to travel behaviour adaptation and consideration of whether the current car ownership state is satisfactory. This can create a latent propensity to change car ownership state. Given the ‘costs’ and effort involved in taking action, households tend to resist changes to their car ownership state. In some cases, action may be prompted by another external stimulus such as the receipt of a maintenance bill, or the opportunity to acquire a car from a trusted friend or family member. The dynamic framework was tested in a neighbourhood survey involving a self-completion questionnaire and follow-up telephone call to establish a wider set of accounts of car ownership level changes. The life event driven nature of car ownership level changes is confirmed and it is found that car ownership level changes are also strongly dependent on life stage. Younger households have a tendency to increase car ownership level from zero to one or more cars as they move towards middle age. Vehicle relinquishments are more likely to occur in older age following retirement in association with health and income constraints. Over 70 percent of car ownership level changes recorded by the survey were associated with either a change in working circumstances, cohabitation, an adult joining or leaving the household, residential relocation, child birth or offspring reaching driving age. The thesis provides specific insights into the circumstances when such events are associated with a change in car ownership level.

▼ Automotive Customer Facing Literature is increasingly responsible for enticing customers to a car brand or car model. Low translation quality in this documentation can have a detrimental effect on the quality perception of the brands by potential customers. This thesis examines the Automotive Customer Facing Literature, such as brochures, specification and price guides, and website texts, for the premium car brands Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) and can be positioned within the fields of Terminology, Translation and Translation Quality Assessment. Since the involvement of the new communication agency Spark44, two years ago, the translation quality of ACFL texts has decreased due to mistranslations, incorrect language use and polluted translation memories and term bases. This is a serious problem that an increasing number of markets complain about. Therefore, this study has examined the translation process for JLR Nederland and provides a Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) utilizing the Multidoc adaptation of the SAE J2450 model, which was specially designed for assessing automotive translations. Based on the results from both the mathematical and observational TQA, the main problems have been identified and solution/advices for these problems have been presented. The aim of this thesis is to present solutions and advice to the involved companies to help them improve the translation quality of their target texts in the Netherlands and other European markets, and eventually all markets worldwide. This has been done in cooperation with the Dutch Product Manager and the in-house transcreator of Jaguar Land Rover Nederland (JLR NL), who, thanks to extensive translation reviews, is responsible for the high quality of the translated texts for the Dutch market, and the Product Manager of JLR NL. ▼ The average shopper in the US goes to the shopping mall more than two times a week for groceries and other items. During the shopping consumers often use shopping carts to move larger quantities of items than they can carry. But the shopping cart that is currently used to increase the carrying convenience of moving groceries stops at the car. From that point on there is still quite a lot of transporting to do to get the bought items to the place where they need to be. This step to step moving of the items results in inconvenience for the consumer. And there are currently no real solutions to make this easier accept bundling items in bags at the cashier, this only takes partial care of the problem. The overall process is a discontinues sequence of steps, and the develop product should help to unify and streamline this process. The project aims to create a product that makes the transportation of groceries from the aisle to the kitchen a more continues process. And doing this by using a product that is prepared for the future of shopping by considering trends and upcoming changes of the (groceries) market. In the end the goal was to create a product that increases the convenience of transporting of bought items. But that also gives the consumer the feeling that they are dealing with an evolution of the shopping cart. And in general streamlines the overall experience of transporting bought items from the shelve to the consumer’s house. The result of the project is the personal shopping cart concept. The cart consists of a shopping basket with a foldable set of wheeled legs mounted to the side of the cart. These wheels enable the cart to slide into the opened trunk of a larger size car (SUV). This is made possible by sliding tracks at the front and bottom of the cart that allow the basket to ‘ride’ in and out of the trunk. The handle pushes the legs together creating a lifting motion to get the cart to trunk height. After that, the user can keep pushing and move the legs upwards, and push them inwards into the car. Additional functionality for the cart is a higher, smaller version. The two halves of the basket slide inward to form a basket that is significantly decreased in size. Then the wheeled legs can be moved towards each other, lifting and decreasing the footprint of the cart. This transforms the cart from a large groceries shopping cart into a smaller more agile retail cart. For this graduation project four stakeholders were involved (University of technology Delft, Graduate student, Design firm and the Client) with all a different goal for the project. So the project was also a balancing act to fulfill all the goals of the involved parties. With the ultimate goal to at the end have one graduated student and one product concept. So next to the development of the concept for graduation, the client was also to be taken along in the process that is required to create a product concept. The number of road accidents is increasing all over the world. When Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) are involved in an accident, they are prone to more serious injuries. Half of the fatalities around the world involve VRUs. One way of mitigating the severity and the number of VRU accidents is the introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functionalities. Such systems must be validated before being introduced on the market. Real-life tests for validating the system would imply driving around for millions of operational hours which would be very time consuming and therefore expensive. For this purpose, TNO has developed a scenario generation method and is currently extending it. The objective of this study was to develop a vehicle-cyclist interaction model which would then be used along the existing scenario generation method or for validating generated scenarios. The preceding literature study to this Master Thesis, from which the architecture of the models was developed and potential input parameters were defined, was used as a starting point. Based on the architecture, the interaction model was first developed with the help of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM). First, a sensitivity analysis was performed from which it was concluded that speed, acceleration, and steering angle are important parameters for a cyclist, whereas speed acceleration and yaw rate are important for a vehicle’s intent recognition. Furthermore, this analysis also indicated that distance to the center of the crossing is a very good interaction parameter. After selection of the parameters, the model was trained and cross-validated using data earlier recorded at TNO. The cross-validation results of the interaction model showed that the intent recognition is more constant for the whole observation sequence and an improved performance is seen for a prediction time of more than 2s compared to a HMM without interaction parameters. From this study, the kinematic input parameters for the cyclist and the vehicle, as well as the interaction parameters, were defined that need to be included in the vehicle-cyclist interaction model. However, the model developed in this study needs to be further validated using naturalistic vehicle-cyclist kinematic data, and for all type of vehicle-cyclist scenarios.

ANWB Connected connects the Engine Control Unit of almost any vehicle to the internet, by using a dongle, with GPS sensor, that is plugged into the vehicle. The ANWB wants to increase the amount of users of this technology. And ANWB Kleinzakelijk, responsible for the Small and Medium Enterprise market, wants to grow its members by broadening the product portfolio with amongst others a product based on the ANWB Connected technology. The project brief for this graduation project was: How can the ANWB support Small and Medium Enterprises with a connected car service? Qualitative research was done to research the needs and context of drivers of and employees responsible for company vehicles. And to research what value the ANWB Connected technology could offer these people. The research showed that the target group is diverse and what the company vehicles is used for and how they are taken care of differs per enterprise. However, the company vehicles are almost always vital for a smooth operating enterprise and it is thus important that these vehicles are always available and functioning in an efficient manner. The ANWB Connected technology can retrieve information from the vehicles to keep those moving and improve the efficiency of the use of those vehicles. After the research phase the design brief was defined as: Create an app for enterprises that helps them to stay mobile and increase efficiency with their vehicle(s), by providing relevant and personalized information. The app that was designed uses the information from the dongle to provide the user of personalized and relevant information to help them increase their efficiency and keep their vehicle functioning. This information is separated in three sections: (1) On the Go, helping improve the daily efficiency of drivers by providing the most relevant traffic information, informing them what the most efficient fuel station is and fully automating their trip log and parking transactions. (2) Vehicle, helping to keep their vehicle moving by preventing problems and help solve problems the best way possible when they do occur. And (3) Administration, decreasing the administrative task load and helping fleet owners get insight in the use of their vehicles. This app was designed and evaluated in a usability test. The results of the test were positive, and recommendations for the improvement of the usability were made. The desirability within the target market still has to be researched, in order to make a well deliberated decision on how to continue with the development of this app.

▼ The contemporary focus by local and central government on the promotion of sustainable transport options has highlighted the need for commuting to move away from the current dependence on private cars to more public and active (walking and cycling) modes of transport. Given the prominence of the motor car in personal transport options however, choosing to live car-free in this car dependent culture appears at first glance to be an irrational choice. This research explores the lived experiences of a group of Hamilton residents who have made such a choice. Using a grounded theory approach, the thesis presents the results of interviews with nine car-free Hamilton residents who shared their personal transport stories, which include their childhood experiences, but focus on their current everyday practices and experiences. Through semi-structured interviews, the costs and benefits of a car-free lifestyle are articulated and analysed. Their motivations for choosing to forgo cars and their solutions for overcoming potential barriers to car-free living are also reported and explored. The collected data generated a range of themes which are presented in three chapters, each covering a specific aspect of the participants’ stories. The first group of themes relate to the public sphere, the second to the private realm and the final group emanates from specific elements of car-free living that the thesis sought to clarify through the participants’ stories. The key finding is that living car-free within Hamilton City is viewed by the participants as a well reasoned and eminently sensible choice, which produces multiple benefits. In addition to their reduced environmental footprints, the participants value the social interaction associated with active and public transport. Their consensus is that they are healthier, wealthier and more involved members of the community. The most problematic areas of living without a car were associated with recreational and social activities, which often do not coincide with public transport schedules or involve distances too great for active transport. The benefits far outweigh any disadvantages however, and ultimately, this thesis concludes that a motor car is not necessary for the everyday activities of urban living in Hamilton and any associated inconveniences are not as insurmountable as generally imagined. ▼ Car guarding, a uniquely South African activity, has become a common form of informal employment. The perception of many is that car guarding is a last resort of financial survival and pursued by those entrapped in a life of drug/alcohol addiction or poor life choices. This study had five objectives: firstly to determine if car guarding and the income made solely from tips is an economically viable mean of survival; secondly to determine the socio-cultural challenges (such as the perception towards car guards) and the physical challenges (such as weather conditions faced) while performing their duties; thirdly to discover general and specific skills car guards possess, either from past employment, or obtained while car guarding; fourthly to reveal the factors which influenced individuals to become car guards; and lastly to better evaluate the current car guarding business models, in order to provide suggestions to improve these. An exploratory research design with convenience sampling of 30 car guards at six different public domains was used. The study was limited to Durban because a degree of rapport had been built through previous informal discussions with car guards. Data was collected from car guards by means of one on one detailed open-ended qualitative questioning in order to ascertain reasons and opinions. Quantitative aspects were not explored. The data obtained was recorded and analyzed by thematic analysis. The study revealed the dismal situation of car guards. For example, at most venues they are charged a “bay fee” to guard a designated area, and have no choice but to survive on the limited amount of donations they are able to obtain, after paying the fee. Besides being harassed and often intimidated by both motorists; security officers and the management of parking premises, they have to brave the elements and work long hours with no physical protection and hardly any employer-support. Recommendations include implementation of a more effective business model to allow for formalization of car guard employment and at the very least good work standards, training and skill development. Organizations need to rise to the challenge to support car guards and local Community Policing Forums (CPF) need to be more involved in assisting car guards. ▼ The project focus has been development of guidelines and methods for upper extremity injury reduction in car crashes. The safety of the central body parts improves which indicates the need to develop methods for avoiding non-life threatening injuries such as fracture of the arms. The purpose of the project was to study the injury mechanisms for the upper extremity in car crashes, and the aim has been to propose methods to reduce the injuries. The project focuses on adult occupants inside the vehicles front seat, and frontal and side impacts. The procedure began with understanding and identifying the injury mechanisms. Studies show that most fractures occur on the forearm (radius and ulna) and on the wrists and hands. To determine which injury mechanisms that were most frequent, data were collected from 29 computer simulations with 29 different crash scenarios. The most common kind of impact was the medial part of the wrist in the central part of the instrument panel, combined with the impact of the elbow in the center consol. The results of the simulations created a basis for the method of the component test, with focus on the injury mechanism i.e. the forward movement of the arms into the instrument panel. The component test consisted of a test rig, on which was mounted with a measuring arm of a 50th percentile male dummy. The arm dropped into a block of expanded polypropylene (EPP-block) for observation and study, and with following variable parameters: the impact angle of the surface, velocity and position of the wrist. Then also an instrumented measuring arm from a 5th percentile female dummy was released into an instrument panel. The project contributes to knowledge about the injury mechanism of the upper extremity in car crashes. The most frequent injury mechanism is a forward movement of the arms resulting in an impact with the interior structure of the car. The most frequent injured region is the distal part of the upper extremity. The project has developed and suggested the first step to a test method for the specific injury mechanism. There is a need of more research on how impact angles and velocity affect the violence on the arm.

▼ Wheelchair is a mobility gadget designed to be replacement for walking, moving physically disabled people ( having injuries in their legs and arm) from one place to other with the help of attendee or by means of self-propelling. The wheelchair is divided into two categories based on the power used mobility: manually powered wheelchair and electrically powered wheel chair. This research typically focuses on design of lifting mechanism on wheelchair seat for easy transfer of users to bed and car seat. The aim is to design a portable wheelchair that can allow the user to transfer and lift him/her-self into a bed, car seat and finally place it at his/her side without having someone to help out. More specifically the designed wheelchair has to move upward/downward to come to a level with the bed and car seat. The design stage initiated by gathering of literature review about the proposed design to know its development and defect from past to present day existing wheelchair designs. Different methodologies have been proposed based on human anthropometric data and test for improvement of lifting mechanism of the wheelchair to maximize the utility of the chair. The conventional method of using care givers to reach optimum height of the wheelchair encounter a lot of limitation (time and energy consumption, comfort, weight of patient that can be carried etc.). In this Research paper manually operated hydraulic scissor lift has been designed and it will be attached to the wheelchair seat. The geometry and joints of this mechanism were carefully arranged so that only one actuator needs to be controlled, enabling the wheelchair user to adjust the seat using manually operating hand pedal that can rise and lower the hydraulic scissor lift. On the theoretical part; the material selection, brief description of the proposed design, cylinder selection and hydraulic control system description were done. The geometrical design; each component of the mechanism was designed using SOLIDWORK software, the hydraulic control system design was done using FLUID SIM software, the dynamic analysis and functionality simulation testing of the lifting mechanism of the design were done using MATLAB and ANSYS WORKBENCH soft wares. Finally, by comparing with the existing manual wheelchairs and survey data‟s about existing wheelchair standard sizes , the proposed mechanism design was comfortable and easily operated with less effort from patients having a seat lifting mechanism than can rise up to a height of 0.3m with a maximum load of 150Kg, which will increase the existing cost by 2500-3000ETB. It was intended to increase the independence of the end user while transferring to bed and car seats. Validation of the design was done and usage is found satisfactory.
