▼ Increasing public awareness on the environmental
and social growth has promoted the application of sustainable
development in construction. The triple bottom line, namely
economy, society and environment is generally recognised as
significant dimensions for measuring the performance of
sustainability. However, most research often puts their focus on
environmental issues, rather than the whole sustainability concept.
The implementation of sustainable construction also differs greatly
from one practice to another, since its definition and principles
are still highly debatable. Additionally, it appears that various
standards and certifications in the market do not embrace three
pillars – environmental, social and economic sustainability in
their assessments either.
To incorporate the best value of
sustainable construction, it is crucial to determine the gap
between stakeholders’ expectations and actual deliverables of
sustainable construction. Therefore, this research aims to explore
and determine the maturity status of sustainable development
implementation in the current construction industry. The
Sustainable Construction Maturity Model (SCMM) is developed to
assist construction stakeholders in gaining a richer understanding
on the practices of sustainable construction. Pilot interviews were
conducted to determine the appropriateness of research methods as
well as to validate the SCMM. The research employed in-depth
interviews and case studies as principal research methods to
develop deeper insights of the development of sustainable
construction, by triangulating data sources. A supplement
questionnaire survey was also used to have a meta-analysis on the
results obtained.
The empirical evidence implies that
sustainable construction could be practised at two extremes –
exceptionally high and low maturity, regardless of sectors. This
large gap suggests that the development of sustainable construction
are rather diverged and fragmented in the industry. Although social
and economic sustainability may not be absolutely excluded, current
sustainable practices tend to put more effort on environmental
sustainability. A loss of balance in achieving the three pillars
may undermine the full potential of realising sustainable
construction.
Additionally, the research also found that good
coordination between stakeholders is required not only during the
design and construction stages but also in the post occupancy
stage. Building a good sustainability culture could always bring
more significant implications on the maturity status of sustainable
construction, rather than the built-in high technology facilities
in the built environment.
To transform the built environment
into a holistic sustainable development world, striking a balance
of the triple bottom line is required. This research can steer the
construction community to improve their performance in attaining
the goals of sustainable construction. The SCMM can also provide an
objective and consistent assessment tool to manage sustainable
capability and capacity and…

▼ The South African public sector faces significant
challenges that impact on its
ability to deliver services to the
public. There are several parties that can assist
the public
sector in addressing these challenges. One of these is the
internal
audit functions of government organisations. For internal
auditing to support
effectively the managements of the government
organisations they serve, the
internal audit function should be
sufficiently capable. The questions remain as to
whether South
African public sector internal audit functions are sufficiently
capable and how internal audit
capability can be measured.
The
Institute of Internal Auditors Research Foundation published the
Internal
Audit
Capability Model (IA-CM) in 2009. The main purpose
of the
model is to
provide a
capability self-assessment tool for
public sector internal audit functions.
This
model could be used
as a yardstick in measuring public sector internal audit
capability within South Africa, should the elements and key process
areas (KPAs)
of the
model be applicable to the South African
context. This study therefore aims
to determine whether the IA-CM
can be applied within a South African context.
The South African
public sector, the role of internal auditing within the South
African public sector as well as the IA-CM as a tool of measuring
public sector
internal audit
capability were investigated. A
literature review was conducted on
these topics, as a foundation
for the study.
Specific data was obtained on each of the KPAs of
the IA-CM through a case
study design by selecting an appropriate
South African national department and
ranking the case against the
KPAs of the IA-CM. The ranking was conducted
based on a review of
relevant documents and interviews with applicable internal
audit
and management staff and audit committee members of the selected
case.
The study concludes that 82.9% of the KPAs of the IA-CM
appear to be
applicable within a South African context and that,
in essence, the
model can be
applied within a South African
context. However, eight hindrances that may negatively affect the
feasibility of implementing the remaining 17.1% of the KPAs
or
certain components of these KPA’s, have been also been
identified.

▼ Background: The administrators, managers, and leaders of criminal justice organizations experience a plethora of processes that impact the strategic, tactical, and operational facets of their respective organizations. Sound processes are central to effectively and efficiently managing criminal justice organizations and for facilitating the optimal operations of the organization. Such management characteristics are necessary to render public services towards the goals of deterring crime and maintaining societal order. Administrating and managing criminal justice organizations involves paradigms that favor process improvement and quality of processes. Existing methods include the Compstat paradigm Total Quality Management, business process management, business process improvement, business process reengineering, standards, legislation, policy, and Six Sigma. However, such paradigms not approach process improvement from the unique perspective of process
maturity as a foundational basis. Additionally, no solitary foundational basis exists that uniquely addresses organizational process improvement issues, regarding criminal justice entities, from the perspective of evolutionary process maturation through time.
This research examines the potential of adapting the
Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMi) as a foundational process improvement framework among criminal justice organizations. Within the CMMi framework, process improvement begins from a state of random, ad hoc processes and culminates in a state of highly optimized processes. Through time, process maturation occurs through five primary stages sequentially: 1) random, 2) managed, 3) defined/specific, 4) quantitatively managed, and 5) optimized. This research explores the potential of leveraging the CMMi paradigm as a form of organizational process improvement within the criminal justice domain. Scope of the Study: This research investigated the potential for adapting the
Capability Maturity Model (Integrated) (CMMi) within the criminal justice domain. A derivative
maturity model framework, the Criminal Justice
Maturity Model (CJMM), was crafted using the CMMi concept as its foundational premise. A Likert scale survey was implemented to investigate the perceptions of personnel regarding process improvement initiatives and their work settings. This study was constrained to the criminal justice domains of the states of Alabama and Mississippi. Data processing encompassed demographic descriptions of the survey instrument and the received responses, ANOVA, Chi-Square analysis, and the Cronbach Method. Stratifications involved separating the survey responses into classifications of Alabama versus Mississippi entities, urban versus rural entities, and management versus non-management entities. Findings and Conclusions: The conclusions of this research failed to show that all five levels of the
maturity model framework appear to be separately perceived among the respondents. Therefore, per each individual stage of the
maturity model framework, this research failed to…

▼ Demand for business intelligence (BI) applications continues to grow even at a time when demand for most information technology (IT) products is low, showing the importance of BI products for a modern organization. However, globalization changes the way organizations use BI, where geographic location and time independency is becoming more and more important. Gartner’s hype-cycle on BI depicts the technology of BI as a Service as being almost on top of the hype cycle, indicating there are high expectations of this new technology.
This thesis research advances on existing literature on business intelligence and cloud computing from a development perspective by introducing the concept of business intelligence as a service (BIaaS). The most important deliverable in the creation of the BIaaS concept is the BIaaS
capability maturity model (CMM) that is introduced. The BIaaS CMM explains the conceptual
model of BIaaS by the creation of the first BIaaS
capability model containing key capabilities of BIaaS. The
capability model is further enhanced with
maturity levels (depicting the importance of each BIaaS
capability), a
maturity matrix (suggesting a roadmap for BIaaS solution development) and a BIaaS assessment
model (introducing a tool for finding problem areas in existing BIaaS solutions). The developed BIaaS CMM ought to support (starting) BIaaS vendors to develop BIaaS solutions by providing an assessment tool BIaaS solutions. The assessment outcome provide the current
maturity of the BIaaS solution and also include
problem areas for solution improvement.
The introduction of the
capability maturity positioning method (CAMP) for the development of a
maturity matrix, which result in the BIaaS
maturity model, is significantly different from conventional
maturity modeling. To calculate the weight of each
capability from the BIaaS
capability model, a thorough product review of existing business intelligence and cloud computing products is performed. Analysis of the results and normalizing the outcome of that analysis together with the introduction of a calculation mapping, is input for the creation of the
maturity matrix. The
maturity matrix is the essential foundation for the developed business intelligence as a Service
capability maturity model, which is the biggest deliverable of this thesis research.

▼ Project failure rates and associated resultant cost in Ghana has been a major concern in recent times (AfDB, 2006). Reasons mostly assigned were unreliable for lack of empirical evidence. Generally, literature provided certain reasons but most often these researches were carried out in environments that were totally and entirely different from that of the Africa’s and Ghana’s conditions. Over the years, considerable effort had been made in trying to find out why projects and programs fail in Ghana (Ofori, 2006; Ayee, 2000). Projects and Programs failures in Africa are visible all over the place arguably though, account for our underdevelopment. This research was a perception study which identified and analyzed the potential project failure/success factors (project critical factor(s)) in three (3) selected sectorsâ€Agriculture, Banking and Construction of the Ghanaian economy. The study also identified project management tools and techniques whose application(s) were familiar to the Ghanaian project practitioners and were associated with project outcomes (success/failures). The above studies employed mainly quantitative research approaches by designing an independent (project factors)â€dependent (project success criteria) variable linear model. Multivariate Analysis of Variance for statistical analysis is considered appropriate. A survey of 324 project practitioners was conducted in the three sectors focused on answering the research questions and testing hypotheses. The analysis revealed perceived project critical factors specific to projects of each sector as well as critical factors common to project organizations of some of the sectors. Project management maturity of project organizations of the three sectors were also assessed through a qualitative research approach with the help of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). The Process areas used for the assessment included Requirement Management, Project Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation; Measurement and Analysis; and Product and Process Quality Assurance. It was observed that with the process areas used as the criteria for assessment, 90% and more of the project organizations assessed were in the level 2 and lower of the Capability Maturity Model (CMMI). In other words a very few organizations were even close to the level 3 of the CMM. This called for a recommendation to the organizations for improvement in their project management activities.

▼ Business intelligence (BI) is a managerial concept which helps managers in the organizations to manage information and make factual decisions. Some have introduced Business Intelligence as a process of turning data into information and then into knowledge. This concept has become a popular trend for businesses interested in adding value to their decision making processes.(Golfarelli et al., 2004) In addition measurement of Business Intelligence readiness/maturity is considered a critical issue. Business intelligence like software development is a process, which expressed in terms of components such as artifacts and workflows. In software engineering, the Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI) developed to define different levels of software process maturity. We draw upon the concepts underlying CMMI to define different maturity levels for a business intelligence process. The study examines the maturity level of Business Intelligence activities as well as the future outlook concerning Business Intelligence in the Iranian banks. The research will also examine key areas of improvement in Business Intelligence operations, benefits gained from Business Intelligence as well as the strength point of Iranian banking industry in using Business Intelligence. Further, a model for business intelligence chose with the factors influencing business intelligence. Then, the questionnaire designed based on CMMI process for testing business intelligence process. Totally 99 valid questionnaire where gathered and by means of factor analysis methods both data and model were evaluated. In addition, the regression tests done in order to test the ability of model. Furthermore, the level of maturity of Iranian banking organization measured and introduced. Finally, the research limitations and some recommendation for further researches offered.

Navržené řešení pak bylo ověřeno terénním výzkumem ve vybraných podnicích.; Business Process Management, the object of this thesis, has still growing importance in the functioning of the organization, and has a positive impact on its success. In the view of a dynamic market environment, Business Process Management has an inherent importance in the strategic business development. When an organization decides to implement process control and manage its activities, it should be also able to measure its processes and evaluate them. This ability gives the organization the possibility to efficiently and effectively manage processes and identify shortcomings for creation of business strategy on a competitive market. This dissertation presents a new evaluation
model of a process control in the production systems, which organizations can use as a guide for further development. This work brings a new perspective in the field of process control and its evaluation of the production systems. The main objective of this dissertation is to design the assessment of the process control levels in the production systems on the basis of theoretical research and practical experience. The proposed solution was then verified by field research in selected organizations.

1 pdf containing 2 volumes. Volume II contains appendices.
The environment of software development and maintenance is intangible, invisible and consequently difficult to manage. Specific problems have been documented, and solutions developed to meet these individual problems. Project specific problems, poor quality software and concern that activities were not giving value for money were all addressed separately. Measurement and training were treated as separate activities that could improve all these areas.
While each of these activities could be effective, organisations started looking at more general solutions which provided cultural change to the environment for developing and maintaining software. Two examples are: lean programming of several types and open source software. Each of these methodologies is used today, but some organisations have adopted standards and models that can provide certification or some other sort of recognition that gives customers confidence in an understood level of service/product quality.
By the mid-nineties, globally recognised standards were being used for software compliance: ISO : 9001 1994 and the Capability Maturity Model. Modern versions are based on the concept of software process improvement (SPI), the notion that if software processes are more controlled, the software products created by them are more likely to be what the customer requires. ISO/IEC 15504 was developed to define how to assess software processes. All of these standards have evolved and changed since the nineties. Efforts at harmonisation have been made, but there are still differences in purpose and content.
The original research question was, ‘What actually happened after SPI assistance in Ireland?’ The SPI assistance was provided to 80 companies that took part in training and consulting programmes sponsored by the European Commission; this was the target population. Short-term benefits are discussed in case studies and final reports for each of these programmes. Existing programmes were available for this research but none were designed to cover processes common to all the different standards used in the SPI programmes. Therefore, it was necessary to design the research with one assessment model suitable for these
potentially different environments.
Ten companies agreed to a full interview and assessment. Data analysis of each company and cross-functional case studies are used to draw specific and more general conclusions.
This model is independent of any single standard and can be used by a company looking for a subcontractor or partner, a national body wanting to determine the status of its country’s software companies, or a researcher in a similar situation
of looking at mixed environments. This research influenced other activities, such as participating in development of an international standard for small software companies.

as questões QP2 e QP3.

▼ Smartphones are proliferating into the workplace at an ever-increasing rate, similarly the threats that they pose is increasing. In an era of constant connectivity and availability, information is freed up of constraints of time and place. This research project delves into the risks introduced by smartphones, and through multiple cases studies, a
maturity measurement
model is formulated. The
model is based on recommendations from two leading information security frameworks, the COBIT 4.1 framework and ISO27002 code of practice. Ultimately, a combination of smartphone specific risks are integrated with key control recommendations, in providing a set of key measurable security
maturity components. The subjective opinions of case study respondents are considered a key component in achieving a solution. The solution addresses the concerns of not only policy makers, but also the employees subjected to the security policies. Nurturing security awareness into organisational culture through reinforcement and employee acceptance is highlighted in this research project. Software consultancies can use this
model to mitigate risks, while harnessing the potential strategic advantages of mobile computing through smartphone devices. In addition, this research project identifies the critical components of a smartphone security solution. As a result, a
model is provided for software consultancies due to the intense reliance on information within these types of organisations. The
model can be effectively applied to any information intensive organisation.

tampa vis sudėtingesnis. Tam kad projektas nevėluotų, neviršytų

sistemą, kuri padėtų išvengti esamo proceso trūkumų. Nors
egzistuoja nemažai projekto valdymo įrankių, iš kurių
populiariausias yra MS Project ir MS Project Server. Šių įrankių
analizė parodė, kad universalūs projektų valdymo įrankiai

that the user cannot see the timely information and never learns

Engineering and Information Theory
U ovoj tezi se razmatra problem pokrivenosti
bežičnim senzorskim mrežama u slučaju stohastičkog razmeštaja
čvorova u određenom regionu od interesa. Stohastički razmeštaj
čvorova je jedini način instalacije mreže u situacijama kada je
pristup terenu otežan ili nemoguć. Tipični primeri ovog načina
instalacije nalaze se u oblasti vojnih primena. U vojnim
sigurnosti i pouzdanosti, potrebno odrediti fundamentalne parametre
konektivnost.
oblika. U vojnim aplikacijama, to je najčešće geografsko područje
površine od 5 do 20 . Ako je cilj očitavanje veličina iz čitavog
regiona, govorimo o pokrivenosti regiona.
U ovom
slučaju se govori o pokrivenosti barijere.

▼ The
Capability Maturity Model Integration is a reference
model composed of a set
of guidelines that has to be implemented to attain a specific level of
maturity in a particular set of process areas. This
model aims to establish a set of "best practices" that should be used to ensure the software development with a high
degree of quality. However, CMMI is not widely adopted by small businesses. Its
adoption by these companies is somewhat complex since, in its guidelines, it
merely indicates what to do, but it does not indicate how to implement each
guideline.
The Rational Unified Process is a software development methodology, which has
as its main objective to avail its users the possibility of the software developing
high-quality, within time and budget.
This thesis aims to contribute a set of solutions that can be followed by small
organizations, in order to implement a more streamlined process
model that
guarantees an increase in the quality of their products.
This thesis adopts and validates a tailoring of the Rational Unified Process allowing
it to be more easily implemented by small businesses or small software teams.
This thesis presents a study of the dependencies between all the
Capability
Maturity Model Integration process areas, in order to enable the understanding of
what the implementation impact is of a given process area in the other process
areas. Finally, we present a mapping between the
Capability Maturity Model
Integration and the Rational Unified Process, which aims to help small software
development teams in the implementation of the
Maturity Level 2 (presented in
more detail) and
Maturity Level 3 of the
Capability Maturity Model Integration.
This mapping specifies what team members have to perform in order to
implement most of the guidelines that the
Capability Maturity Model Integration
requires for each of their
maturity levels.

▼ Abstract
Ever since the early 90âs the global software market has been growing at a rapid speed, even faster than that of the hardware market. Along with the development of Internet and e-commerce, the demands for software have been continuously on the rise.
The Taiwan software industry has to improve the quality of its software products in order to compete in the international IT arena. The present best option is for the Taiwanese software firms to achieve the Software Engineering Instituteâs
Capability Maturity Model certification.
This study shows that the obstacles Taiwanese software firms in adopting
Capability Maturity Model can be categorized into three main factors: human resources, environment, and technology. Therefore, the software industry must start solving these issues to improve quality and Subsequently attain international standard.

▼ Increased regulatory compliance requirements and risks are driving IT organizations to formalize control activities associated with their IT systems. The purpose of the ITCMM capstone project is to define an IT Controls program, control activity selection approach, and method for measuring
maturity in support of an organizations regulatory compliance and risk mitigation requirements. A literature review and survey tool confirmed the ITCMM Capstone team's initial hypothesis - the majority of existing literature and the current state of IT Control programs focus only on control activities, no single industry standard framework will meet all of an organizations control requirements, and measuring
maturity is subjective and not accurately reflecting the actual
maturity levels of control activities. These gaps create risks that IT Control initiatives will not be properly structured to meet regulatory requirements or properly aligned to risk. An analyses of IT governance best practices, interviews, and experience with IT audit, risk assessment, and enterprise architecture were used to develop the components of the ITCMM IT Controls program. The ITCMM team identifies eight program components that are necessary in order to better align the program to actual risks, meet regulatory requirements, provide evidence of compliance, and enable the organization to scope and prioritize the implementation activities of the controls program. In addition, three existing frameworks for the selection of control activities are identified and compared for relevancy, strengths, and weaknesses. A method of measuring
maturity is defined and can be leveraged by an organization looking to self-assess the
maturity of its program and improve. A web site and tutorial is also provided to assist novices with a roadmap to implementation of the IT Controls program.

▼ The objective of all organization is to obtain efficient and fast results with less resource. The organization need to be able to improve their internal processes to reach this objective and to achieve that, it is necessary to measure the degree of the reached improvement compared to the proposed objective. This dissertation offers a concentrate method on the conceptual basis of Balanced SoredCard (BSC) to assist consultant companies which the customers wish to have their CMMI process implanted whit the best level of monitoring and control. It presents a flow of activities grounded in the basic process of the creation of the strategic map proposed by Kaplan &Norton at BSC as well as a set of templates to each flow of activities. A specific case of one Information Technology and Communication (ITC) company was used to demonstrate the use of the proposed method applied by a fictitious consultant company. In this case, the method was applied to monitor and to control the implant of only three Process Areas of CMMI: Project Planning (PP), Project Monitoring and Control (PMC) and Configuration Management (CM). To understand the set of the adopted practices to compose the method, the flow of activities and the suggest artifact the following themes are revised: strategic management; project management; models and patterns of maturity in processes; Capability Maturity Model Integration CMMI; Process Areas PAs of CMMI, specially PP, PMC and CM; and the BSC as a management system of support decision indicators. The dissertation conclusions point to a better monitoring and control of the CMMI implant process by consultant companies which use the proposed method to the management of performance indicators. The model is able to be used in the implant process of the Management Project PAs of CMMI, suggesting the use of it to any PA whit the objective of monitoring the performance and to reflect in the general success of the organizational maturity acquisition of the ITC companies.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the
trends in published research concerning Lean Six Sigma and
continuous improvement. We use published research in the areas of
continuous improvement, for example Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma,
Lean Six Sigma, and Sustainability to show that this growth in
popularity is spurring more research, technical papers, and a
general direction within academia and the business community. The
six sigma literature and lean six sigma literatures have continued
to grow. Specifically, the volume of articles on lean six sigma has
grown 415% by one measure in five years. Yet, in proportion the
majority of relevant articles continue to be on six sigma alone.
Relevant literatures focusing on overlaps of six sigma with other
concepts such as simulation, optimization, and sustainability also
have experienced rapid growth. We found a change in the perceptions
about success factors from a previous emphasis on top management
commitment to a new emphasis on structured approaches. This
development combined with the rise of new technology intensive
methods such as optimization and simulation which are combined with
lean sigma indicate to us a maturing of the literature and the
organizations that support it. Finally, by examining statistics
about the document database, we develop hypotheses about the future
including those relating to sustainability and energy conservation
and lean six sigma methods.

Capability Maturity
Model for Software (CMM).
ambiente nível 2 do CMM.

▼ One of the problem that plagues Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) software is its development cost. Many software companies forego the usability engineering aspect of their projects due to the time required to design and test user interfaces. Unfortunately, there is no "silver bullet" for user interface design and implementation because they are inherently difficult tasks. As computers are moving off the desktop, the greatest challenge for designers will be integrating these systems seamlessly into our everyday lives. The potential for reuse in user interfaces lies in reducing the time and effort required for this task, without sacrificing design quality.
In this work we begin with an iterative development cycle for a claims library based on prominent literature within the HCI and software engineering fields. We constructed the Claims Library to be a repository of potentially reusable notification system claims. We examine the library through theoretical and practical perspectives. The theoretical perspective reveals tradeoffs in the initial implementation that relate to Krueger's taxonomy of reuse. The practical perspective stems from experience in designing and conducting usability testing for an in-vehicle input device using the Claims Library. While valuable, these examinations did not provide a distinct method of improving the library. Expecting to uncover a specific diagnosis for the problems in the library, it was unclear how they should be approached with further development efforts.
With this realization, we saw that a more important and immediate contribution would not be another iteration of the Claims Library design. Rather, a clarification of the underlying theory that would better inform future systems development seemed a more urgent and worthy use of our experience. This clarification would need to have several characteristics to include: composed of a staged or prioritized architecture, represents an ideal
model grounded in literature, and possesses intermediate development objectives and assessment points.
As a solution, we propose the Claims Library
Capability Maturity Model (CL-CMM), based on the theoretical deficiencies that should guide development of a claims library, as noted in the two evaluations. This thesis delivers a five-stage
model to include process areas, goals, and practices that address larger threads of concern. Our
capability maturity model is patterned after models in software engineering and human resource management. We include a full description of each stage, a gap analysis method of appraisal, and an example of its use. Several directions for future work are noted that are necessary to continue development and validation of the
model.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In a developing country such as South Africa, the survival and growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is critical to the growth and prosperity of the country. Their importance for the modern economy, and their contribution to economic development is widely recognised and accepted. Nevertheless, they face several challenges which result in high failure rates. With the fast pace of technological change, and an increasingly dynamic business landscape, the topic of SME support is becoming more important. The changing business landscape can be viewed from an ecosystem perspective to make sense of the emerging, abstract concepts. The ecosystem perspective provides an alternative lens that captures this transformation by emphasising the importance of relationships, partnerships, and collaboration. It is becoming increasingly recognised that there are several strategic benefits for both large and small firms to enter into collaborative, symbiotic partnerships. Many characteristics inherent to SMEs, such as agility, flexibility and innovative capabilities are characteristics that larger firms are increasingly looking for in partners. The reality of partnerships however, particularly for an SME, is that they are both complex and challenging. If SMEs do not have guidance to strategically apply these characteristics, their already limited resources would constantly be placed under even more strain. In this vein, the study was continued with the objective to develop a framework that can guide a South African SME to identify, and improve the capabilities required to develop business-to-business (B2B) relationships in business ecosystems. In pursuit of this objective, the systems engineering approach was utilised to guide the problem solving process. This involved identifying the requirements that are necessary or compulsory for a relationship to function as desired, and converting these requirements into relational capabilities through which the requirements can be addressed in an SME. The relational capabilities were subsequently consolidated into a two-dimensional framework, referred to as the Relational
Capability Framework (RCF). The RCF however needed to be transformed into a tool that could be used to guide an SME to identify and improve the necessary relational capabilities. This was done by adding a third dimension,
Capability maturity, to the RCF to develop the Relational
Capability Maturity Model (RCMM). The RCF and related RCMM were
subject to a three-stage validation process. This involved 1) a
capability ranking questionnaire, 2) two illustrated case studies, and 3) semi-structured interviews. Throughout this process, the RCF was continuously refined in order to provide the confidence that the framework delivers on its main objective.
The RCMM was applied using a three-stage improvement process, including 1) evaluation, 2) planning and 3) improvement. Through the practical application, the framework has been proven to be useful in creating explicit knowledge. This knowledge can in turn be…

The Medical Device industry is currently one of the fastest growing industries in the world and a guarantee of the integrity of medical device software has become increasingly important. Failure of the software can have potentially catastrophic effects, leading to injury of patients or even death. Consequently there is a tremendous onus on medical device manufacturers to demonstrate that sufficient attention is devoted to the area of software risk management throughout the software lifecycle. Failure to do so can lead to a lack of approval from the various regulatory bodies with a consequent surrender of the right to market the device in a particular country.
Several different standards, guidance papers and industry guides exist which make it difficult to guarantee conformance in all cases. This diverse set of requirements can make software risk management difficult and this thesis examines the possibility of a unified approach whilst investigating the relevance of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) SPI model to the regulatory requirements. It is demonstrated that existing SPI models are not comprehensive enough to satisfy medical device safety requirements and an alternative is proposed.
The research presented in this thesis develops a software Risk Management Capability Model (RMCM) for the medical device sector, which meets medical device regulatory requirements and the CMMI® Software Process Improvement (SPI) risk management practices. The RMCM has been evaluated within a medical device company producing medical device software.
During the creation of the model a mapping has been performed between medical device regulations and the CMMI® guidelines for software risk management. The research identifies the potential strengths and weaknesses of the CMMI® risk management process area in the specific context of medical device software. The research also identifies weaknesses of current medical device software regulations, through the analysis of the CMMI® SPI model.

The current trend in IT is to recognize that both IT-enterprises and customers demand a certificate or a proof of conformity concerning the defined quality standards.
To fulfil these requirements, enterprises have increasingly implemented their IT processes in accordance with “Best of Practices” suggested by the ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library). However, ITIL does not itself set forth mandatory norms. Therefore, the internationally valid standard ISO/IEC 20000 was published in the end of 2005. This norm defines the demands for internal as well as external IT service providers. A certification after ISO/IEC 20000 allows an independent judgment of IT services and is already required by customers in many cases. The certification procedure constitutes a very complicated and extensive project.
This paper proposes a measuring method to determine the progress of an ISO/IEC 20000 certification processes.
First, existing maturity models are analyzed in view of the ISO/IEC 20000 certification.
Based on the ISO/IEC certification process, measuring…

Currently it is real and noticeable the importance of a software development with quality, motivation and top level technology, but even the best people are not able to do the best when the process is not understood or executed the best possible way. The process, when described in a detailed way, enables its understanding, training in its practice, validation, improvement and alteration. The CMMI Capable Maturity Model Integration main objective is to model the best practices to help the organization achieve the maturity. However, these activities are expensive and lengthy. The use of an intelligent and adaptable application to help the organizations might contribute to accelerate this evolution. This paper proposes to present the development of the CMMI-Quality applications which objective is to motivate the organizations and institutionalize the use of models of process for the areas of software development, presenting firstly the situations of its development environment, so that afterwards it can suggest actions for the implementation of the practices required by the CMMI Model from its process.

▼ The need for information systems has increased to a point where virtually all business environments require some sort of software to aid in its daily operations. This study will address the need for quality information systems by examining techniques which can potentially aid in producing consistent high-quality information systems. Two techniques in particular, namely Process Maturity Models (PMMs) and Systems Development Methodologies (SDMs) are examined.
Process Maturity Models such as the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) as well as the ISO-9000 standards aid in standardising and improving an organisation’s information systems development processes. These Process Maturity Models often require either the use of certain Systems Development Methodologies or at the very least techniques used within some Systems Development Methodologies. Systems Development Methodologies refer to a set of development processes, tools, techniques etc. which can be used during software development to standardise the entire development process by offering the use of modelling techniques, tools to analyse requirements, illustration of processes etc. These techniques differ from one Systems Development Methodology to the next.
This study aims to identify the relationship between Process Maturity Models and Systems Development Methodologies. During the research process a questionnaire was sent out to people within the information technology business environment. The questionnaire contained questions used to determine and measure the usage of Systems Development Methodologies and how projects were affected. The questionnaire was also used to do an informal assessment of each respondent’s Capability Maturity Model level. Furthermore the data retrieved was statistically analysed and the results were interpreted.
The results indicate that a relationship exists between the use of SDMs and the success of the respondent’s development processes and developed products. A total of 73% of respondents indicated that they do use SDMs to some extent, the most common being the Systems Development Lifecycle (SDLC). The majority of organizations implementing SDMs have been doing so for three years or more. Results also show that most of the respondents are not certified in some formal Process Maturity Model; however, they do implement some of the processes required by models such as the CMMI. An informal assessment performed indicated that 65% of respondents can be grouped into a perceived CMMI level 2 category. Project outcome was measured and the relationship between PMM implementation as well as SDM use was measured. Results show no statistical evidence which indicates that an organisation’s perceived CMMI level is influenced by SDM use, both vertically and horizontally. Results do, however, indicate that organizations which have been implementing SDMs for a longer period of time are more likely to apply CMMI level 4 activities. Results also indicate that the horizontal use (number of projects/people which implement SDM knowledge) of…

▼ This thesis treats the problem of the network coverage in randomly deployed
wireless sensor networks. Placing the nodes quasi-randomly is often the only
way of deploying the network in geographically inaccessible regions. This way
of deployment is often present in military applications. In military
applications, high quality of the network coverage is usually a primary goal,
despite the fact that the nodes cannot be placed manually in the optimal
positions where they would all together provide the highest coverage, a
certain degree of robustness, and redundancy, by using the minimum number of
nodes. Bearing in mind that this kind of installation is usually realized by
using artillery or the aircrafts, before approaching the energy, security,
and reliability optimization, it is important for the application to meet the
basic functionality, i. e., it is important for the values of the basic
parameters that provide a certain degree of the network coverage and
connectivity for a given area of interest to be assessed. The area of
interest can be a region of any shape. In military applications, it is
usually the region of size 5-20km2. If the aim is for the whole area to be
covered, we deal with the area coverage. Another usual example of the
appliance of the wireless sensor networks in military applications is related
to the detection of intruders while attempting to cross the line between two
regions. In this case, we deal with the barrier coverage. This thesis covers
the modeling of the stochastic implementation of the wireless sensor
networks, the analysis of the area and the barrier coverage, as well as the
methods for improving the barrier coverage by using mobile nodes or robots.
Under the initial assumptions and approximations, the conditions for an
expected degree of the specific types of coverage are given for those types
of coverage whose quality can be expressed in terms of the expected detection
probability. But, regarding the strong barrier coverage, instead of assessing
the coverage quality, only the information on barrier coverage creation can
be derived, i.e., a strong barrier coverage can either be accomplished or not
accomplished. According to the theoretical results from literature, it can be
concluded that the full barrier coverage can be achieved almost always if the
very strict conditions are met. These conditions, however, are hard to be
provided. Therefore, in this thesis, two algorithms for creating the full
barrier coverage, by filling the network breaks with mobile nodes or by using
robots, in the situations where these conditions are not met, are proposed.
In order for the algorithms to be implemented, a simulator is developed.
According to the rules defined in algorithms, the simulator determines the
number of breaks, the position and the appropriate number of additionally
needed nodes for the strong barrier coverage to be provided. The simulator
functionality is verified by using the theoretically derived results for the
area coverage and the weak…

▼ A great deal has been written in the management
literature concerning the field of knowledge management. Some of
that literature has focused on the use of stories and storytelling,
including for the sharing of knowledge. However, the field of
knowledge management is relatively immature in South Africa. In
particular within that field, there is not a clear understanding of
the use of stories and storytelling for knowledge sharing within
the country. The purpose of the study was to improve that
understanding through research into a case study within the South
African mining industry, with a focus on world-class performance.
To assist in the performance evaluation of the case study
organisation, a framework for world-class performance was developed
and used as an analytical tool in conjunction with a research
instrument that was based on the findings of the non-empirical
research into the fields of knowledge management and stories and
storytelling. The empirical research then focused on the activities
of a particular community of practice within the case study
organisation and sought to understand the way in which stories and
storytelling were used to support the sharing of knowledge in the
organisation, as a contributor to world-class performance. Whilst
conducting the empirical research, assessment and analysis, it was
identified that the case study organisation made use of a number of
practices and tools to support the use of stories and storytelling,
in particular graphical representations (storyboards) of the
stories to complement their oral delivery. The analysis of the case
study data indicated that a significant opportunity existed to
improve the extent of world-class performance for the use of
stories and storytelling and a number of recommendations were made
in that regard.

▼ This research addresses issues relating to the implementation of software process improvement (SPI) initiatives. A number of advances have been made in the development of software process improvement (SPI) standards and models, e.g. Capability Maturity Model (CMM), more recently CMMI, and ISO's SPICE. However, these advances have not been matched by equal advances in the adoption of these standards and models in software development which has resulted in limited success for many SPI efforts. The current problem with SPI is not a lack of standards or models, but rather a lack of an effective strategy to successfully implement these standards or models.
Despite the importance of the SPI implementation process, little empirical research has been carried out on developing ways in which to effectively implement SPI initiatives. I have focused on SPI implementation issues and designed three individual components in order to assist SPI practitioners in the design of effective SPI implementation initiatives. I have combined individual components under one SPI implementation framework (SPI-IF) using a bottom-up approach. The framework is based on results drawn from the SPI literature and an empirical study I have carried out. In the design of SPI-IF, the concept of critical success factors (CSFs) is used and extended. Thirty-four CSF interviews were conducted with Australian practitioners. In addition, 50 research articles (published experience reports and case studies) were selected and analysed in order to identify factors that play positive or negative roles in SPI implementation. The SPI-IF has three components: SPI implementation factors component, assessment component and implementation component. It provides a practical structure with which to assess and implement SPI implementation initiatives.
In order to evaluate the software process improvement implementation framework, two practical evaluations were undertaken: three case studies and an expert panel review process. The case study method was used because this method provides valuable insights for problem solving, evaluation and strategy in the real world environment. An "expert panel review" process was also conducted in order to seek the opinions of SPI experts about the structure and components of the SPI-IF.
In order to provide more confidence in this study, three separate case studies were conducted at different companies. The results of the case studies showed that the SPI-IF is not only significant in the theoretical sense but also significant in a real world environment. Successful completion of the three case studies demonstrates the use of the SPI-IF in the real world environment. All the participants who used the SPI-IF were fully satisfied with the assessment results and overall performance of the framework.
The results of the expert panel review process showed that the SPI experts' general impression about 'ease of learning', 'user satisfaction' and 'structure of the SPI-IF' was positive. Overall, the experts were fully satisfied with the different…
