▼ Radio transient signals are non-periodic and discrete obtained from high energy physical processes in space. Most challenging issues in transient signal detection are the speed and accuracy with which a signal can be detected. Cumulative Sum (
CUSUM) algorithm has been employed in this paper for transient signal detection and proved to be capable of meeting the necessary requirements. However, as ordinary software-based programs are unable to handle large scale sample of signals, the current research focuses on implementing the
CUSUM algorithm on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) which is a specific integrated circuit within the field of semi-customized circuits that can greatly enhance the speed of detection and analysis. Therefore a FPGA-based system was devoted to implement the algorithms for an efficient transient signal detection. A detection speed of 64 ns per sample set was achieved via implementation the algorithm on an Altera Cyclone IV device with a clock speed of 50 MHZ. The analyzed result shows the power consumption of the FPGA based system can be reduced to 136.75 mW.

▼ The objective of study 1 was to examine the associations between feeding behavior traits and performance and residual feed intake (RFI) in Brangus steers (N = 84). Steers with low-RFI phenotypes consumed 19% less (P < 0.01) DM intake while BW and ADG were similar compared to high-RFI steers. Steers with low RFI also spent 21% less time at the feed bunk, had 6% fewer (P < 0.05) bunk visit (BV) events, and tended (P = 0.08) to have 11% shorter meal durations per day than steers with high RFI. There were no differences in carcass quality or carcass income, therefore the reduction in feed cost of the low-RFI steers resulted in an increase (P < 0.05) in net revenue of 145 per animal compared to high-RFI steers. Time to bunk (TTB) was quantified on a daily basis as the interval length between feed truck delivery and the first BV event. Time to bunk was weakly correlated (P < 0.05) in a negative manner with ADG (-0.27) and positively correlated with exit velocity (0.25) and F:G ratio (0.25). Steers with low-TTB phenotypes gained 18% faster (P < 0.05), tended (P = 0.08) to have 11% more favorable F:G, and resulted in 88 more net revenue per animal (P < 0.05) than steers with high TTB. Results from this study demonstrated that animals with divergent phenotypes for RFI exhibited distinctive feeding behavior patterns, suggesting that feeding behavior traits could be useful as phenotypic biomarkers for RFI. The objective of study 2 was to characterize deviations in DM intake and feeding behaviors in bulls (N = 231) exhibiting clinical symptoms of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). The bulls were separated into 2 cohort groups based on observed clinical illness (N = 30) or those treated metaphylactically Draxxin (N = 201). A 2-slope broken-line regression model was applied separately on a population basis to the clinically-ill and metaphylaxis-treated cohorts to identify inflection points in DM intake and feeding behavior traits. The model detected inflection points for DM intake were 6.79 and 3.81 d prior to observed clinical illness or metaphylaxis treatment, respectively. Furthermore, the model detected inflection points for individual feeding behavior traits that (BV frequency and duration, Head down duration, maximum non-feeding interval, and non-feeding interval SD) ranged from 14.19 to 1.32 d prior to observed clinical illness, and from 12.59 to 3.79 d prior to metaphylaxis treatment. To further assess the value of monitoring deviations in feeding behavior traits as a method for pre-clinical detection of infectious disease individual
CUSUM charts were constructed in a daily iterative manner to replicate real-time data analysis. The
CUSUM model based on DM intake yielded a high proportion of true positives (87%; model predicted animal as ill) and high model test efficiency (89%) in the clinically-ill cohort, whereas, in the metaphylaxis-treated cohort the proportion of true positives detected (71%) and test efficiency (84%) were slightly lower. While time of model detection prior to observed clinical illness based on DM…

▼ Detecting change points in epidemic models has been studied by many scholars. Yao (1993) summarized five existing test statistics in the literature. Out of those test statistics, it was observed that the likelihood ratio statistic showed its standout power. However, all of the existing test statistics are based on an assumption that population variance is known, which is an unrealistic assumption in practice. To avoid assuming known population variance, a new test statistic for detecting epidemic models is studied in this thesis. The new test statistic is a parameter-free test statistic which is more powerful compared to the existing test statistics. Different sample sizes and lengths of epidemic durations are used for the power comparison purpose. Monte Carlo simulation is used to find the critical values of the new test statistic and to perform the power comparison. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation result, it can be concluded that the sample size and the length of the duration have some effect on the power of the tests. It can also be observed that the new test statistic studied in this thesis has higher power than the existing test statistics do in all of cases.

In public health several approaches have been proposed for the detection of outbreaks of infectious diseases where the characteristic being monitored is a time series of count data as the number of hospitalizations, where the population and the expected rate of admissions change over time. In this work we fitted generalized linear models (GLM) and implemented Shewhart and CUSUM control charts for monitoring the daily number of hospital admissions due to respiratory diseases for people aged 65 and older in the city of São Paulo. Through simulations, we…

▼ Introduction: There is no method for learning curve assessment in vitrectomy, the most common being the sequential case analysis of surgical complications. There are no tutorized retina fellowships in Spain, so it is necessary to develop a self-assessment system of the vitrectomy learning curve, to ensure safe progress until it is achieved.
Objective: To assess cumulative sum analysis (
CUSUM) capability to analyze learning curve in vitrectomy.
Methods: A single ophthalmologist trainee’s first vitrectomy cases were evaluated. Following data was collected: diagnosis, learning time, surgical technique, intraoperative and postoperative complications. Sequential case analysis was carried out to assess the evolution of surgical complications over time and
CUSUM charts were created for 5 variables: retinotomy, ocular hypertension, hypotony, secondary cataract and retinal redetachment.
Results: 237 vitrectomies were included. Sequential case analysis detected a change in surgical technique towards transconjunctival vitrectomy around the 80th case, with surgical complications increasing in the following trimester.
CUSUM charts show good performances, achieving competence at a different learning time for each variable, as well as periods of an unsatisfactory performance, coincident with an increase in surgical complications. Full vitrectomy competence was achieved following 236 procedures.
Conclusions: Learning curve analysis indicates that time to achieve competence takes longer than the surgical trainee thinks. Sequential case analysis is proved to be a subjective and late system for learning curve assessment, while
CUSUM analysis is proposed as an objective, prospective and precise method, that also provides the ability to anticipate an unsatisfactory performance.

▼ Statistical quality control charts originated in the
late 1920’s by Shewhart (1926, 1931 and 1939). Their applications
in various disciplines have been ever-increasing. Although most
control charts are distribution-based, recent literature witnessed
the development of a considerable number of distribution-free or
nonparametric control charts. The purpose of this thesis is to
present the concepts and introduce the researcher to the essentials
of univariate nonparametric control charts. Various properties of
nonparametric control charts are comprehensively discussed and
concepts are clearly explained. Proofs and detailed calculations
have been given to help the reader to study and understand the
subject more thoroughly. This text contains a wide variety of
illustrative examples to give an overall picture of how
nonparametric control charts are used. Both simulated and real data
examples have been integrated throughout the text. Since most
practical problems are too large to be solved using hand
calculations, some type of statistical software package is required
to solve these problems. There are several excellent statistical
packages available and in this thesis we make use of Microsoft
Excel, SAS, Minitab, Mathcad and Mathematica to construct (almost
all) the tables in this thesis. We point out that a number of
Mathematica programs are provided by Chakraborti and Van de Wiel
(2003) by means of the website www.win.tue.nl/~markvdw. The aim
throughout is to convey the concepts of univariate nonparametric
control charts in a way that readers will find attractive and
interesting. Since the majority of nonparametric procedures, to be
distribution-free, require a continuous population, only variables
control charts are covered. We only consider control charts for
monitoring the location of a process, since very few nonparametric
charts are available for monitoring the spread. In this thesis we
consider the three main classes of control charts: the Shewhart,
CUSUM and EWMA control charts and their refinements. The text is
divided into several chapters. An introduction to nonparametric
control charts is presented in Chapter 1. A discussion of some of
the advantages of nonparametric control charts is included while
pointing out some of the disadvantages. In Chapter 2 we describe
the Shewhart-, CUSUMand EWMA-type sign control charts with (and
without) warning limits. In Chapter 3 we describe the Shewhart-,
CUSUM- and EWMA-type signed-rank control charts with (and without)
runs-type signalling rules. The Shewhart-type sign-like control

4. In Chapter 5 we consider the Shewharttype signed-rank-like

CUSUM-type Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon control charts. We considered
decision problems under both Phase I and Phase II (see Section 1.5

▼ Reliable estimation of prices in counterfactual worlds that did not (and will never) exist creates many issues, both theoretical and empirical. I focus on forecasting methodologies often employed in estimation of cartel overcharges. I suggest the use of recursive residuals and application of
CUSUM and CUSUMSQ tests to assess the reliability of predictions fundamentally driven by implied assumptions of model and parameter stability. The availability of standard, objective tests for model stability based on recursive residuals provide additional support to researchers attempting to reliably estimate cartel overcharges. I apply these techniques to data for a hypothetical cartel, and show the variability of overcharge percentages estimated by various approaches – comparing simple averages, forecasts and dummy variable approaches.

In comparison to conventional smart meters, NIALM (Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring) is an innovative technology because it can monitor power usage on individual appliances in an electrical network using only one sensing node. Thus, setting up and maintaining the system is very simple because of the few of hardware elements. In contrast, the software of NIALM is often very complex and there is still the need in developing more complex algorithms to classify appliances more accurately. These complex algorithms of NIALM require to run on a powerful and expensive hardware platform. In order to overcome this problem, the first contribution of this thesis is to propose a low cost real-time innovative NIALM system to solve some limits of NIALM design by extracting more electrical signatures, detecting slow transition and multi-state appliances, and energy disaggregation in real-time. This is possible by using two new algorithms: CUSUM event detection algorithm and disaggregation based on Genetic Algorithm. Similar to complex DSP systems, a NIALM system contains both event control processes and data streaming processes. The second important contribution of this research is to propose a methodology based on RPN model (Reactive Process Network) to develop a complex NIALM system in SoC with FPGA acceleration. Such SoC allows running data streaming processes with…

▼ This study aims at analysing how African oil benchmarks within the OPEC Reference Basket relative to the WTI and Brent benchmarks which are considered as global pricing benchmarks for the period starting from 1997-2008. The Nigerian Bonny Light and Algerian Saharan blend were the two benchmarks used for this study. A time series analysis was applied to the weekly price data series set and with the aid of a breakpoint unit root test and
Cusum of Squared test to determine if there was a change in the persistence of the spread of each African benchmark relative to the global benchmarks. The results for from the unit root test indicated the presence of a structural break in the price spread in 2004 for the Bonny Light benchmark and in 2005 for the Saharan blend relative to both global benchmarks. The
Cusum Squared test for the four benchmark pairings indicated a change in persistence of the price spreads. The null hypothesis was rejected for the alternative hypothesis of the price spread process having a relatively high persistence value after a while. The
Cusum Test results showed a change in persistence for both African benchmarks relative to the WTI benchmark and no change in persistence relative to the Brent benchmark. The results of from the Time series analysis indicated the competitive nature of African benchmarks relative to global benchmarks and this could benefit exporting countries by virtue of setting up derivative markets. The derivative markets would allow for the trade of benchmark spreads, futures contracts, options and other financial instruments for African oil producers.

▼ The supply of drinking water in sufficient quantity and required quality is a challenging task for water companies. Tackling this task successfully depends largely on ensuring a continuous high quality level of water treatment at Water Treatment Works (WTW). Therefore, processes at WTWs are highly automated and controlled. A reliable and rapid detection of faulty sensor data and failure events at WTWs processes is of prime importance for its efficient and effective operation. Therefore, the vast majority of WTWs operated in the UK make use of event detection systems that automatically generate alarms after the detection of abnormal behaviour on observed signals to ensure an early detection of WTW’s process failures. Event detection systems usually deployed at WTWs apply thresholds to the monitored signals for the recognition of WTW’s faulty processes. The research work described in this thesis investigates new methods for near real-time event detection at WTWs by the implementation of statistical process control and machine learning techniques applied for an automated near real-time recognition of failure events at WTWs processes. The resulting novel Hybrid CUSUM Event Recognition System (HC-ERS) makes use of new online sensor data validation and pre-processing techniques and utilises two distinct detection methodologies: first for fault detection on individual signals and second for the recognition of faulty processes and events at WTWs. The fault detection methodology automatically detects abnormal behaviour of observed water quality parameters in near real-time using the data of the corresponding sensors that is online validated and pre-processed. The methodology utilises CUSUM control charts to predict the presence of faults by tracking the variation of each signal individually to identify abnormal shifts in its mean. The basic CUSUM methodology was refined by investigating optimised interdependent parameters for each signal individually. The combined predictions of CUSUM fault detection on individual signals serves the basis for application of the second event detection methodology. The second event detection methodology automatically identifies faults at WTW’s processes respectively failure events at WTWs in near real-time, utilising the faults detected by CUSUM fault detection on individual signals beforehand. The method applies Random Forest classifiers to predict the presence of an event at WTW’s processes. All methods have been developed to be generic and generalising well across different drinking water treatment processes at WTWs. HC-ERS has proved to be effective in the detection of failure events at WTWs demonstrated by the application on real data of water quality signals with historical events from a UK’s WTWs. The methodology achieved a peak F1 value of 0.84 and generates 0.3 false alarms per week. These results demonstrate the ability of method to automatically and reliably detect failure events at WTW’s processes in near real-time and also show promise for practical application of the HC-ERS in…

▼ Statistical process control techniques are commonly used in industrials problems and can also be applied in the health area, since quality in medical procedures are an integral part of day-to-day hospital structures. However, in this case, the population can not be regarded as homogeneous as goods in a production line. The application of the CEP in the health area must admit the existence of heterogeneity, taking into account particular characteristics of each patient with, for example, gender, age, and measures that reflect the general health conditions. In this sense, some authors propose monitoring survival time of patients, through a
CUSUM (Cumulative Sum) chart, adjusted to incorporate the risk of each individual by a parametric regression model. This chart is called by the authors of RAST
CUSUM, and the theoretical results were developed to monitor times until the occurrence of an event, even when they are
subject to incomplete information (right censoring), considering for that the Weibull model, which is very used to model survival data. In this work the RAST
CUSUM Weibull graph was used in a retrospective study, to monitoring the survival of patients with oral and oropharyngeal cancer, treated on the Northern Riograndense League of the câncer, from 2001 to 2013. The data of this work come from the data base of the hospital being registered beyond the dates of diagnosis and last visit to the institution, socio-demographic characteristics and clinics of patients, considered as potential risk factors for mean survival time of these individuals. As a result of the monitoring that considered the location and size of the tumor, type of the first treatment adopted and family history as risk factors, an increase of 20% in the mean survival time of the patients from 2005 was detected.

▼ The main objective of this dissertation is the development of CUSUM procedures
based on signed and unsigned sequential ranks. These CUSUMs can be
applied to detect changes in the location or dispersion of a process. The signed
and unsigned sequential rank CUSUMs are distribution-free and robust against the
effect of outliers in the data. The only assumption that these CUSUMs require is
that the in-control distribution is symmetric around a known location parameter.
These procedures specifically do not require the existence of any higher order moments.
Another advantage of these CUSUMs is that Monte Carlo simulation can
readily be applied to deliver valid estimates of control limits, irrespective of what
the underlying distribution may be.
Other objectives of this dissertation include a brief discussion of the results
and refinements of the CUSUM in the literature. We justify the use of a signed
sequential rank statistic. Also, we evaluate the relative efficiency of the suggested
procedure numerically and provide three real-world applications from the engineering
and financial industries.

▼ The development and investigation of a convergence
diagnostic for Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) posterior
distributions is presented in this paper. The current method is an
adaptation of an existing convergence diagnostic based on the
Cumulative Sum (
CUSUM, Page 1954; Yu & Mykland, 1998; Brooks,
1998c) procedure. The diagnostic under development is seen to be an
improvement over the technique upon which it is based because it
offers a simple way to remove one of the two major assumptions made
by the previous method, namely that the shape of the distribution
under consideration is symmetric. Results are mixed, but there is
some evidence to indicate that the new technique is sensitive to
the degree of autocorrelation present and the stability of the
chains. Also, the new diagnostic behaves differently than three
existing convergence diagnostics.; Convergence Diagnostic, Markov
Chain Monte Carlo

▼ The Hadoop framework has become the most deployed platform for processing Big Data. Despite its advantages, Hadoop s infrastructure is still deployed within the secured network perimeter because the framework lacks adequate inherent security mechanisms against various security threats. However, this approach is not sufficient for providing adequate security layer against attacks such as Distributed Denial of Service. Furthermore, current work to secure Hadoop s infrastructure against DDoS attacks is unable to provide a distributed node-level detection mechanism. This thesis presents a software agent-based framework that allows distributed, real-time intelligent monitoring and detection of DDoS attack at Hadoop s node-level. The agent s cognitive system is ingrained with cumulative sum statistical technique to analyse network utilisation and average server load and detect attacks from these measurements. The framework is a multi-agent architecture with transducer agents that interface with each Hadoop node to provide real-time detection mechanism. Moreover, the agents contextualise their beliefs by training themselves with the contextual information of each node and monitor the activities of the node to differentiate between normal and anomalous behaviours. In the experiments, the framework was exposed to TCP SYN and UDP flooding attacks during a legitimate MapReduce job on the Hadoop testbed. The experimental results were evaluated regarding performance metrics such as false-positive ratio, false-negative ratio and response time to attack. The results show that UDP and TCP SYN flooding attacks can be detected and confirmed on multiple nodes in nineteen seconds with 5.56% false-positive ration, 7.70% false-negative ratio and 91.5% success rate of detection. The results represent an improvement compared to the state-of the-art.

Manufacturing electronic mobile communication products requires high quality control, achieved through measurements and tunings of each unit produced. The goal of this publication is the evaluation of statistical process control (SPC) to monitor the quality of products and the process capability index Cpk. In other words, this study compares the sensitivity of control charts to detect variations in process mean and standard deviation. In this sense, Shewhart control charts and cumulative sum (CUSUM) control charts were comparatively analyzed to select the best SPC in order to guarantee more accurate measurements and devices tuned with lower deviations. Shewhart, in this case, uses the mean and the standard deviation of samples measured during a defined period of time. CUSUM control charts, based on cumulative sums, are statistical tools successfully used to evaluate processes in different industries. The Shewhart control chart was optimized to monitor the capability index Cpk. According to results obtained under the conditions of this experience, CUSUM control chart has higher sensibility when the process has small shifts. It was not observed efficacy of optimized Shewhart control chart to monitor Cpk.

▼ High speed stream anomaly detection is an important technology used in many industry applications such as monitoring system health, detecting financial fraud, monitoring customer's unusual behavior and so on. In those scenarios multivariate data arrives in high speed, and needs to be calculated in real-time. Since solutions for high speed multivariate stream anomaly detection are still under development, the objective of this thesis is introducing a framework for testing different anomaly detection algorithms.Multivariate anomaly detection, usually includes two major steps: point anomaly detection and stream anomaly detection. Point anomaly detection is used to transfer multivariate feature data into anomaly score according to the recent stream of data. The stream anomaly detectors are used to detect stream anomalies based on the recent anomaly scores generated from previous point anomaly detector. This thesis presents a flexible framework that allows the easy integration and evaluation of different data sources, point and stream anomaly detection algorithms. To demonstrate the capabilities of the framework, we consider different scenarios with generators of artificial data, real industry data sets and time series data, point anomaly detectors of PYISC, SVM and LOF, stream anomaly detectors of DDM, CUSUM and FCWM. The evaluation results show that for point anomaly detectors, PYISC and LOF perform well when the distributions of features are known, SVM performs well even when the distributions of features are not known. For the stream anomaly detectors, DDM has some possibilities to get false anomaly detection, CUSUM has some possibilities to get failed when the stream anomalies increase slowly, while FCWM performs best with very low possibilities to get failed.

▼ In statistical process control, control charts are one tool for monitoring the control status of a process. One such type of chart is the cumulative sum (
CUSUM) chart which has advantages over other styles of control chart. A study of the economic design of
CUSUM control charts is undertaken via a comparative study of long-run hourly cost (LRHC) and a computational search algorithm is used to minimize LRHC for a

▼ To reduce the risk of global warming it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy usage in buildings, particularly central grid supplied electric energy. According to U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL, buildings sector accounts for 39% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the United States per year, more than any other sector and the most significant factor contributing to CO2 emissions from buildings is their use of electricity; it is more than 70% of electricity use in the U.S.
It appears that convenience stores have significant opportunities for reductions in electric energy use. The Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) reported energy use intensity (kBtu/ft2) of convenience stores is 2.9 times more than commercial office buildings. Understanding convenience store’s energy use and consumption patterns will provide useful information, which will help to inform owners and operators as to what operational changes can be made to reduce energy consumption. Continually monitoring the energy consumption of convenience stores in order to identify typical energy use patterns is necessary.
Monitoring includes sufficient sub-metering of specific subsystem (lighting, HVAC, refrigeration, and food preparation) energy use in specific weather and customer interactions. The monitoring data is used within a with a set of monitoring and targeting (M&T) analysis tools that establishes expected energy use relative to a data-based baseline. Actual convenience store operational data is used to demonstrate the usefulness of the M&T practice. In order to determine the electricity consumption pattern of main meter and sub-meters in each store, the inverse modeling method is applied to the convenience energy utilization data and the associated accumulated sum of differences between expected and observed energy use (
CUSUM) M&T for the whole building and specific subsystem energy uses allows facility managers to immediately determine the end-use cause of energy use deviations observed in the energy use
CUSUM reporting. The results indicate that the similarly designed stores exhibit very similar qualitative energy use dependencies with changes in ambient weather conditions with respect to whole building energy use and subsystem energy uses. However, the quantitative levels of energy use as well as the changes in energy use with change in ambient temperatures are specific, even for stores in close physical proximity. The energy use patterns are quite reproducible for a given location and deviations are observed to occur only when significant changes in site equipment performance or building envelope changes occur. It’s believed, with some modification, this technique could be used in continues energy monitoring of an entire fleet of similar, high energy utilization commercial building types, allowing for automated notification of unexpected deviations from expected energy use at a site and probable subsystem root causes of such deviations. The automated, coupled measuring and monitoring system…

▼ D.Phil.
We propose solutions to two statistical problems using the frequency domain approach to time series analysis. In both problems the data at hand can be described by the well known signal plus noise model. The first problem addressed is the estimation of the underlying variance of a process for the use in a Shewhart or CUSUM control chart when the mean of the process may be changing. We propose an estimator for the underlying variance based on the periodogram of the observed data. Such estimators have properties which make them superior to some estimators currently used in Statistical Quality Control. We also present a CUSUM chart for monitoring the variance which is based upon the periodogram-based estimator for the variance. The second problem, stimulated by a specific problem in Variable Star Astronomy, is to test whether or not the mean of a bivariate time series is constant over the span of observations. We consider two periodogram-based tests for constancy of the mean, derive their asymptotic distributions under the null hypothesis and under local alternatives and show how consistent estimators for the unknown parameters in the proposed model can be found

▼ This research is related to the control of energy consumption and efficiency in building Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and is primarily concerned with controlling the function of heating. The main goal of this thesis is to develop a control system that can achieve the following two main control functions: a) detection of unexpected indoor conditions that may result in unnecessary power consumption and b) energy efficiency control regarding optimal balancing of two parameters: the required energy consumption for heating, versus thermal comfort of the occupants. Methods of both orientations were developed in a multi-zone space composed of nine zones where each zone is equipped with a wireless node consisting of temperature and occupancy sensors while all the scattered nodes together form a wireless sensor network (WSN). The main methods of both control functions utilize the potential of the deterministic subspace identification (SID) predictive model which provides the predicted temperature of the zones. In the main method for detecting unexpected situations that can directly affect the thermal condition of the indoor space and cause energy consumption (abnormal situations), the predictive temperature from the SID model is compared with the real temperature and thus possible temperature deviations that indicate unexpected situations are detected. The method successfully detects two situations: the high infiltration gain due to unexpected cold air intake from the external surroundings through potential unforeseen openings (windows, exterior doors, opened ceilings etc) as well as the high heat gain due to onset of fire. With the support of the statistical algorithm for abrupt change detection, Cumulative Sum (CUSUM), the detection of temperature deviations is accomplished with accuracy in a very short time. The CUSUM algorithm is first evaluated at an initial approach to detect power diversions due to the above situations caused by the aforementioned exogenous factors. The predicted temperature of the zone from the SID model utilized appropriately also by the main method of the second control function for energy efficiency control. The time needed for the temperature of a zone to reach the thermal comfort zone threshold from a low initial value is measured by the predicted temperature evolution, and this measurement bases the logic of a control criterion for applying proactive heating to the unoccupied zones or not. Additional key points for the control criterion of the method is the occupation time of the zones as well as the remaining time of the occupants in the occupied zones. Two scenarios are examined: the first scenario with two adjacent zones where the one is occupied and the other is not, and the second scenario with a multi-zone space where the occupants are moving through the zones in a cascade mode. Gama and Pareto probability distributions modeled the occupation times of the two-zone scenario while exponential distribution modeled the cascade scenario as the least favorable case.…
