▼ HIV/AIDS is one of the worst epidemics in modern history. The language used to portray this pandemic in policies and mass media has been an object of study in many countries. However, in Ethiopia, the language used to represent this epidemic in policies and newspapers has not been thoroughly investigated using systematic methods of linguistic analysis. The current study aims to partially bridge this gap by deconstructing the representations of this pandemic in Ethiopia’s policy documents and government run newspapers using the interdisciplinary approach of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The current study drew from a number of CDA frameworks. However the major analytic method used in the study are Van Dijk’s (1988, 1998 and 2001) ideological square and sociocognitive frameworks which were used for expounding the socio-political implications of the discourses. Thus, after the internal structure of the texts were described drawing on theories of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the underlying meanings conveyed by such texts were explicated in terms of the wider contexts in light of social theories. Basically the current study asked and answered the question: ‘How was HIV/AIDS represented in Ethiopia’s HIV/AIDS policy documents and newspapers?’ Specifically, the study addressed questions like: ‘How were identities produced in HIV/AIDS related policy documents and newspapers, how were issued aligned, what sorts of treatments were sought, what metaphors were used to represent the pandemic and those afflicted?’ iv The findings of the study point to a contradictory set of identities simultaneously made possible and impossible for PLWHA (people living with HIV/AIDS) and those who were not afflicted by the pandemic. Thus HIV/AIDS has been represented in an ‘othering’ way of representation in which it was attributed to individual behavioral outcomes through the use of pervasive metaphors. As such, the disease was represented in a way that leads to stigmatization of certain social groups which were cast as ‘risk groups’. Behavior change was posited and overemphasized as a desired outcome in the discourses of international agents in collaboration with government irrespective of the existing socioeconomic condition of the so-called ‘risk groups’. The recommended suggestions seem to be incommensurate with actual situations of Ethiopia.Furthermore, the analysis revealed that the social agents that were involved in producing discourses of HIV/AIDS employed various strategies that were pervasive in maintaining the power relations. ▼ Denna C-uppsats granskar OmVärlden som behandlar bistånd, utveckling och globala frågor och som ställs till förfogande av Sida (Styrelsen för internationellt utvecklingssamarbete). Studien grundar sig i ett övergripande intresse för hur medierna påverkar samhällets uppfattning om verkligheten och för studien relevant, postkoloniala föreställningar om maktrelationer och strukturer i utvecklingsländer. Studien innefattar en förstudie i kombination med kritisk diskursanalytisk metod vilken appliceras på fem skilda reportage ur OmVärlden. Syftet är vidare att se hur journalistiska texters uppbyggnad bidrar till att konstituera samhällets föreställningar om rådande hegemoniska strukturer. För att definera studiens problemområde ställs frågor om reportagens dominerande teman och aktörer samt representationen av genus. Detta följs sedan av en utredning av Sidas eventuella röst och påverkan vad gäller OmVärldens redaktionella innehåll. För studien relevant har ett flertal teorier och begrepp behandlats, bland annat postkolonial teori (som berör kritisk granskning av hierarkiska maktrelationer) och intersektionalitet (som bidrar med att skapa förståelse för hur simultana och globala maktrelationer påverkar föreställningar om ojämnlikhet). Efter redovisning av samtliga anlyser och med stöd från behandlade teoretiska områden, gör vi tolkningen att reportagens tematiska och diskursiva sammansättning styr de postkoloniala maktförhållandenas produktion och reproduktion. Vidare konstaterar vi att Sidas röst framkommer genom, och därmed påverkar OmVärldens redaktionella innehåll. Vi drar följdaktligen slutsatser som grundar sig i analysens resultat om textsammansättningens utformning och betydelse. Vi tolkar resultaten som att OmVärlden explicit bidrar med en betydelsefull och nutida angelägen kunskap om utvecklingsländer och bistånd, vilket i enhet med Sida verkar för utveckling inom området. Tidningens implicita bidrag till en ideologisk omvärldsförändring tolkas dock som begränsad. Avslutningsvis behandlas ett flertal aspekter vad gäller fortsatt forskning inom ämnesområdet.

▼ The Australian Federal Government in its effort to fulfil its commitment to solving the global issue of climate change established the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act (NGER Act). The State through its Department of the Environment and Water Resources (DOEWR) initiated a consultative process to develop the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System (NGERS) and issued the Regulations Discussion Paper (RDP) in 2007. The public submissions from three professional firms are the focus in this thesis in order to examine the role that the accounting profession played in the development of the NGERS. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is used, as developed by Fairclough (1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2009), to interrogate the submissions from text level, discursive practice level and social practice level. In addition, the texts are analysed with an emphasis on their experiential, relational and expressive values. Consistent with CDA, the views of Fairclough on hegemony and ideology are used as theory to interpret the findings. The analysis of the submissions reveals a dialectical relationship between the three professional firms and the State (DOEWR). Three agenda items or moments were common in the submissions and the RDP, namely: an Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), reporting system and audit and assurance. At the level of text, the three professional firms asserted their authoritative status in developing an ETS, reporting system and audit and assurance, based on their knowledge and experience of these moments. The level of discursive practice reveals a power struggle between the three professional firms and the State. The State selected international reporting standards, such as GHG Protocol and ISO 14064 while the three professional firms argued for standards set by the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB). The level of social practice revealed a possible compromise between stakeholders, as it can be inferred from subordinate legislation of the NGERS. The transdisciplinary approach of this thesis contributes to the existing accounting literature on the role of the accounting profession in the global arena of climate change. This thesis shows the importance of analysing public submissions to an initial consultative process for NGERS. The culminating influence on the early legislation of NGERS signals a contested arena for the accounting profession and the State.

Den här studien analyserar hur maktstrukturer framträder i den amerikanska dagspressens bevakning av sexuella trakasserier. Studien analyserar 18 artiklar som har bevakat två snarlika fall där två män som varit nominerade till en position i Högsta domstolen i USA blivit anklagade för sexuella trakasserier. Det första fallet från 1991 är mellan Clarence Thomas och Anita Hill och det senare fallet är från 2018 mellan Brett Kavanaugh och Christine Blasey Ford. Artiklar från Wall Street Journal, New York Times och Chicago Tribune, som är de tre ledande dagstidningarna i USA har studerats med syfte att avslöja om det finns några underliggande ideologier och maktintressen i texten. För att avslöja dessa konstruktioner utgår studien från en kritisk diskursanalys som metod med målet att kunna se hur de språkliga resurserna uttrycker ideologier och maktintressen. Studiens teoretiska ramverk har främst utgått från genusteori, och därefter utifrån hegemoni, rape culture, nyhetsjournalistik och tabloidisering. Med hjälp av olika analysverktyg har sammanlagt 18 artiklar analyserats där materialet har delats in i fyra teman, och utifrån dem har texterna analyserats mer utförligt. Resultatet visar att patriarkala maktstrukturer uttrycker sig i olika grad i artiklarna och att det har skett en förändring i den journalistiska diskursen över tid.

This study analyzes how power structures express themselves in the daily press's coverage of sexual harassment. The study analyzes 18 articles that have covered two similar cases where two men who have been nominated for a position in the Supreme Court in the United States have been accused of sexual harassment. The first case from 1991 is between Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill and the latter case is from 2018 between Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford. Articles from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, which are the three leading newspapers in the United States, have been analyzed with the aim of revealing whether there are any underlying ideologies and power interests in the text. In order to uncover these constructs, the study uses CDA as a method for being able to see how the linguistic resources express ideologies and power interests. The study’s theoretical framework has mainly been based on gender theory, and then based on hegemony, rape culture, news journalism and tabloidization. With the help of various analysis tools, a total of 18 articles have been analyzed where the material has been divided into four themes, and based on them the texts have been analyzed in more detail. The result shows that patriarchal power structures express themselves to varying degrees in the articles and that there has been a change in journalistic discourse over time.

The representation of women in prostitution varies over time and space. This study aims to make visual how women in prostitution are being represented in Swedish judicial system today. The study uses a critical discourse analysis, inspired by Fairclough's three-dimensional model, and is based on a theoretical framework of reification theory, theory of respectability and previous research. The study analyzes 68 court verdicts, published in 2018 on the legal database Karnov Juridik, Kvinnifridspropositionen (Prop. 1997/98: 55) and an evaluation of the law's application and effect (SOU 2010: 49). The study makes visible a two-part image of the woman as occasionally invisible and occasionally defined on the basis of prostitution. The study shows how an overall market discursive perspective through the verdicts relates to a focus on the purchase of sex, rather than the parties involved. The study shows that the focus on the woman in prostitution, which was widely criticized and which the law reform intended to shift towards the sex buyers, continues to stay on the women in prostitution.

Framställningen av kvinnor som befinner sig i prostitution har varierat över tid och rum. Denna studie ämnar undersöka hur svenskt rättsväsende framställer kvinnor i prostitution idag. I studien används en kritisk diskursanalys, inspirerad av Faircloughs tredimensionella modell, och utifrån ett teoretiskt ramverk av reifikationsteori, respektabilitetsteori samt tidigare forskning. Studiens empiriska underlag utgörs av 68 domar, publicerade år 2018 på rättsdatabasen Karnov Juridik, kvinnofridspropositionen (Prop. 1997/98:55) och en utvärdering om lagens tillämpning och effekt (SOU 2010:49). I studien synliggörs en tudelad bild av kvinnan som tidvis osynlig och tidvis definierad utifrån prostitution. Studien synliggör hur ett marknadsdiskursivt perspektiv genom domarna påverkar diskursen genom att fokus riktas mot den sexuella tjänster mot ersättning, snarare än de parter som är involverade. Det kritiserade fokus som tidigare inriktades på kvinnan i prostitution ämnade lagreformen att skifta mot männen, sexköparna. I studien framkommer tendenser av ett fortsatt fokus på kvinnorna som befinner sig i prostitution snarare än sexköparna, som framställs som konsumenter inom ett marknadsfenomen.

▼ Due to projectedincrea ses in air traffic, there are several research efforts underway to evaluate ways to safely increase the capacity of the National Airspace System (NAS), improve operational efficiency, andre duce aircraft noise. At NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, Virginia, two parallel research efforts have focusedon terminal area research: one is Airborne Precision Spacing (APS), and the other is the Quiet Aircraft Technologies (QAT) project. The APS objective is to increase terminal-area capacity without adversely affecting safety, whereas the QAT project objective is to develop noise- and fuel-efficient approach trajectories. The APS project developed a cockpit tool, called Airborne Merging and Spacing for Terminal Arrivals (AMSTAR), that issues speedco mmands to aircraft to maintain desired spacing between aircraft pairs. The APS studies showed an ability to increase runway capacity; however, capacity increases may negatively impact noise andemissio n levels in airport areas. The QAT project created efficient Continuous Descent Approaches (CDAs), which showedred uctions in aircraft ground noise and fuel consumption. Previous research has shown that CDA trajectories have adverse effects on runway capacity because aircraft must be spacedf urther apart at long distances from the runway to prevent separation losses at the runway threshold. To date, the APS and CDA concepts have been evaluated independently at LaRC.In this study, three different approaches to combining APS and CDA operations were evaluatedto determine the feasibility and benefits of combining these concepts. These methods combined AMSTAR with 3◦-flight-path-angle-CDA approach routes, 3◦-CDA routes with spoilers, and2 ◦-CDA routes without spoilers. Adding the use of spoilers allowedf aster responses to large speedr eductions issued by AMSTAR. This improvement was contrastedwith the effects of a shallower flight-path angle for greater deceleration capabilities. This research indicated that AMSTAR improved the performance of CDA operations, although full capacity improvements were not achieved. Whereas the 2◦-CDA routes were expectedto show the best results, the 3◦-CDA case with spoilers showed the least variability in thresholdspacing errors. All of the CDA routes were more noise, fuel, and time efficient than traditional step-descent routes that are commonly usedto day. Advisors/Committee Members: Hurtado, John E. ▼ Animals are raised for human consumption. This practice has become an increasingly divisive issue in America. On one side of this issue are those who believe that eating animals and using their byproducts is natural, normal, necessary, and nice; on the other are those believe consumption of animals is unnecessary and morally wrong. The purpose of this study was to explore how pro- and anti-meat consumption organizations communicate, reinforce, and advance their ideology online to actively shape public opinion. Online textual and visual strategies were examined, building on the foundational tenets of ELM, social identity theory, anti-consumption/reasons against, and inoculation theory. The homepages of three anti-meat organizations and three pro-meat organization websites were examined using a multi-phase content analysis that included critical discourse analysis, persuasive narratives, and semiotics strategies. Both qualitative and quantitative data was collected. Input and output of animal production is contrasted on the pro- and anti-meat websites. Animal Rights Vegan Activists (ARVA) organizations portray animals as having souls, and are portrayed as equals to humans. Compassionate people are portrayed as those who expose the cruelty of using animals as a food source, and are vegan. Pursuit, rescue, and wretched excess plots are favored. Inoculations against lifestyle norms and values are favored. ARVA consistently portrays itself as an alternative societal lifestyle. The meat organizations focus exclusively on food. Meat is quick, easy, affordable, and nutritious. Families want to eat it, and consumers feel good about serving it. Adventure, discovery, and maturation plots are favored. Inoculations against other meats, rather than against ARVA are present. Lifestyle norms and values, credibility, and information about meat appeared to be the inoculations favored. Rather than strengthening the universal brand of meat, the organizations actively subvert it through internal competition. Instead, pro-meat consumption organizations should promote their universal brand (i.e., meat) in a manner that not only resonates with the average consumer, but also encourages collective action by consumers in defense of the meat industry. ▼ As emission regulations getting more stringent and the demand for fossil fuel growing, it is crucial to develop advanced technologies for internal combustion engine to lower emissions and fuel. Strategies such as diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) for UHC, diesel particulate filters (DPF) for PM, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for NOx have been developed and implemented to convert harmful emissions to innocuous species. However, the efficiencies of these after-treatment systems are heavily temperature dependent. Heavy-duty over-the-road trucks require periodic active diesel particulate filter regeneration to clean the filter of stored particulate matter. These events require sustained temperatures between 500 and 600 °C to complete the regeneration process. Engine operation during typical 65 mile/hour highway cruise conditions (1200 rpm/7.6 bar) results in temperatures of approximately 350 °C, and can reach approximately 420 °C with late fuel injection. This necessitates hydrocarbon fueling of a diesel oxidation catalyst or burner located upstream of the diesel particulate filter to reach the required regeneration temperatures. These strategies require increased fuel consumption, and the presence of a fuel-dosed oxidation catalyst (or burner) between the engine and particulate filter. This work experimentally demonstrates that, at the highway cruise condition, deactivation of valve motions and fuel injection for two or three (of six) cylinders can instead be used to reach engine outlet temperatures of 520 - 570 °C, a 170 - 220 °C increase compared to normal operation. This is primarily a result of a reduction in the air-to-fuel ratio realized by reducing the displaced cylinder volume through cylinder deactivation. HDFTP drive cycle has more than half of the fuel consumed at high speed/high load conditions. Strategies using valve train flexibility were investigated experimentally to improve fuel economy at high speed/high load conditions. IVC modulation at high speed is an effective way of achieving higher volumetric efficiency from dynamic charging in turn help fuel efficiency. Intake valve closure from nominal 565 CAD to 595 CAD at high speed enables dynamic charging and thus increases EGR fraction with air-to-fuel ratio maintained. The strategy of "dynamic charging" helps get fuel economy benefit by around 1.25% without sacrificing BSNOx. Advisors/Committee Members: Gregory M. Shaver, Gregory M. Shaver, George T. Chiu, Peter H. This thesis takes an interdisciplinary, critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach to investigate the discursive construction of place-identity. For the purposes of this research, place-identity is understood as the relationship between the discursive construction of place and the discursive construction of the multiplicities of the individual and collective self. The main data is provided by interviews with British lifestyle migrants in the Algarve, Portugal. I develop a framework for investigating both the individual and the collective dimensions of migrant place-identity by combining elements from Systemic Functional Linguistics (in particular Appraisal theory) and Cognitive Linguistics. This allows an analysis of both strategic features of the micro-level of discourse, such as evaluation of place(s), and apparently less conscious features, such as the use of spatial deixis. I draw on Positioning Analysis as a means of linking micro- and macrolevels of analysis. At the micro-level, the findings suggest that various modes of belonging are constructed in interaction by positioning the self as being attitudinally aligned (or not) with place(s) and by positioning the self as being (literally and metaphorically) inside/outside place(s). The macro-level context of the research is the growing contemporary trend of lifestyle migration, which is strongly related to tourism mobilities. Since this social phenomenon is fertile ground for the production of privileged, elite identities, one of the aims of this thesis is to expand the agenda of CDA research by developing an understanding of how such privileged identities are articulated, (re)produced, reinforced and negotiated through discursive positionings, and how these positionings are linked to hegemonic discourses that ‘legitimise’ certain types of migration. The study thus aims to show how the discursive construction of place-identity is not only an integral part of the discursive construction of migrant identities, but also how place-identity is linked to broader ideologies and contributes to the politics of place.

▼ Studien intresserar sig för nyhetsmediernas konstruktion av politisk mobilisering i det postpolitiska samhället. Uppsatsen behandlar nyhetsrapporteringen på dn.se samt sydsvenskan.se, om den antirasistiska demonstrationen i Kärrtorp i december 2013 och den antirasistiska demonstrationen i Limhamn i augusti 2014. Syftet är att analysera hur demonstrationerna konstrueras i svensk dagspress, med intentionen att vidare analysera och diskutera hur journalistiken konstruerar legitimitet åt politiska praktiker samt undersöka huruvida det går att synliggöra någon ideologi i medietexterna. Frågeställningarna berör hur demonstrationerna representeras, hur identiteter konstrueras, vilka framträdande teman som återfinns samt hur hierarkiseringen av källor ser ut i artiklarna. En diskussionsfrågeställning syftar även till att diskutera om postpolitikens liberala diskurs har betydelse för hur dagspressen konstruerar legitimitet åt politiska praktiker. För att svara på frågeställningarna görs en kritisk diskursanalys inspirerad av Norman Faircloughs tredimensionella analysmodell. Textanalysen görs på en tematisk nivå av hela materialet, dessutom görs en närläsning av fyra artiklar. Chantal Mouffes teori om samtiden som postpolitisk används för att sätta texten i ett socialt sammanhang, Jan Ekecrantz & Tom Olssons makroorienterade teori om journalistiken som institution används för att få en förståelse för journalistikens position i samhället. Mikael Karlssons teori om nätjournalistik används för att förstå materialets karaktärsdrag. Studien visar att våld, polisinsatsen, hotet mot demokratin och vittnesberättelser är framträdande teman. Demonstrationerna representeras utifrån våld, officiella källor dominerar men även demonstranter och vittnen framträder. De politiska gruppernas identiteter konstrueras främst som goda eller onda utifrån våldsanvändning. Således dominerar en liberal, en akademisk och en polisiär diskurs, men det återfinns även en diskurs kritisk mot polisen; en motdiskurs. Den övergripande diskursen i materialet är ideologisk. Postpolitikens diskurs synliggörs genom att demonstrationerna konstrueras som illegitima politiska praktiker då deras politiska motiv osynliggörs, samtidigt som de bedöms som moraliskt förkastliga, med anledning av deras våldsamma utveckling.

▼ The principle of Continuous Double Auctioning (CDA) is known to provide an efficient way of matching supply and demand among distributed selfish participants with limited information. However, the literature indicates that the classic CDA algorithms developed for grid-like applications are centralised and insensitive to the processing resources capacity, which poses a hindrance for their application on resource constrained, smart micro-grids (RCSMG). A RCSMG loosely describes a micro-grid with distributed generators and demand controlled by selfish participants with limited information, power storage capacity and low literacy, communicate over an unreliable infrastructure burdened by limited bandwidth and low computational power of devices. In this thesis, we design and evaluate a CDA algorithm for power allocation in a RCSMG. Specifically, we offer the following contributions towards power auctioning on RCSMGs. First, we extend the original CDA scheme to enable decentralised auctioning. We do this by integrating a token-based, mutual-exclusion (MUTEX) distributive primitive, that ensures the CDA operates at a reasonably efficient time and message complexity of O(N) and O(logN) respectively, per critical section invocation (auction market execution). Our CDA algorithm scales better and avoids the single point of failure problem associated with centralised CDAs (which could be used to adversarially provoke a break-down of the grid marketing mechanism). In addition, the decentralised approach in our algorithm can help eliminate privacy and security concerns associated with centralised CDAs. Second, to handle CDA performance issues due to malfunctioning devices on an unreliable network (such as a lossy network), we extend our proposed CDA scheme to ensure robustness to failure. Using node redundancy, we modify the MUTEX protocol supporting our CDA algorithm to handle fail-stop and some Byzantine type faults of sites. This yields a time complexity of O(N), where N is number of cluster-head nodes; and message complexity of O((logN)+W) time, where W is the number of check-pointing messages. These results indicate that it is possible to add fault tolerance to a decentralised CDA, which guarantees continued participation in the auction while retaining reasonable performance overheads. In addition, we propose a decentralised consumption scheduling scheme that complements the auctioning scheme in guaranteeing successful power allocation within the RCSMG. Third, since grid participants are self-interested we must consider the issue of power theft that is provoked when participants cheat. We propose threat models centred on cheating attacks aimed at foiling the extended CDA scheme. More specifically, we focus on the Victim Strategy Downgrade; Collusion by Dynamic Strategy Change, Profiling with Market Prediction; and Strategy Manipulation cheating attacks, which are carried out by internal adversaries (auction participants).
