▼ This thesis makes a significant contribution to the growing body of sport tourism knowledge by identifying the unique characteristics of those who take part in this popular form of leisure. Empirical evidence of this nature effectively addresses the fundamental challenge to sport tourism’s status as a legitimate field of academic enquiry. This challenge centres on the argument that sport tourism simply involves an amalgamation of two well-established disciplines. The context for the research is provided by Masters Games which are regarded as a prominent sport tourism activity in Australia. Specifically, registered participants of Masters Games who travel from outside the host region represent a particular type of ‘competitive active sport tourist.’ The research objective of this thesis is directed toward the identification and analysis of differences in motive between such individuals and registered participants who live locally. The travel variable therefore represents the primary feature which distinguishes the two participant groups, and by association, sport tourists from non sport tourists. A sequential mixed-method research design is employed to address two fundamental research questions which collectively engage the research objective. Research question 1 asks: what are the key psychological motives that influence an individual’s decision to travel and compete in a Masters Games event; while research question 2 asks: is there are difference between local and non-local Masters Games competitors in terms of their psychological motives for participation? Findings derived from in-depth interviews undertaken with non-local Masters Games participants identified five psychological motives. These motives are socialising, camaraderie, competition, achievement and athletic identity. The analysis of data also revealed that the strength of an individual’s motive may be positively influenced by the travel component of their Masters Games experience. Subsequent testing of this assessment, using a combination of multivariate data analysis techniques, found that the strength of a social and escape motive is significantly stronger among non-local participants. In addition to support for the theoretical premise of sport tourism itself, the research findings also contribute toward a theoretical explanation of sport tourism behaviour. Building on the model of Masters Games participation proposed by Ryan and Trauer (2005), various sport tourism career paths can be recognised which lead to a social sport orientation. Such career paths are specifically attributed to the experience of competing in sport away from the home location. The identification of different motive profiles among local and non-local participants also contributes to the development of event marketing strategies for Masters Games managers. ▼ In the growing field of volunteer tourism research, the motivations, benefits and criticisms of this activity have been widely explored. An area that has received less attention has been the post-experience domain and particularly its impact on volunteer tourist contributions to their own communities. In the spirit of exploring effective altruism through the maximisation of social good, this study explores the impact of the volunteer tourism experience on the propensity of volunteer tourists to undertake other volunteering variants post-trip, indicative of a potential conduit for volunteer recruitment. To achieve this, the study is underpinned by the Expectation-Disconfirmation Paradigm (‘EDP’). The researcher measured the expectations, disconfirmation and satisfaction of volunteer tourists over the course of their trip. By doing so, she was able to examine the effects of these constructs on behavioural intentions relating to repeat purchase, overseas travel, domestic travel volunteering and local volunteering. Initial interviews were conducted with past volunteer tourists and with volunteer sending organisations to determine volunteer tourist expectations. The ensuing list of items was supplemented by the literature on tourism and volunteering. The expectations that were identified formed the basis of a two-round questionnaire that was designed to measure expectations, disconfirmation, satisfaction and behavioural intentions prior to volunteer tourists’ departure and upon their return. The results revealed that disconfirmation had more influence on behavioural intentions than the other variables measured. The disconfirmation of expectations was related primarily to personal growth and learning. These factors yielded statistically significant relationships in relation to volunteering behavioural intentions. This study found tentative associations between the transformative experience of volunteer tourism and decisions to start or continue volunteering in the future, but did not find strong evidence that could confirm the role of volunteer tourism as a conduit for volunteer recruitment. While contributing to the research on volunteer tourism using the lens of EDP, recommendations for future research include the implementation of alternative data analyses, and the utilisation of multiple theories to develop more holistic frameworks of comparison.

▼ Tourism is often promoted as a development tool for Indigenous communities. However, Tourism Research Australia shows that domestic demand for Australian Indigenous tourism products, in comparison to four other types of mainstream tourism, is quite low. To explore why domestic visitors are less engaged in Indigenous tourism than other tourism types, this study adopts a mixed-methods case study approach. Semi-structured interviews using sorting-ranking photo-based procedures were conducted with 52 domestic visitors at Halls Gap, within the Grampians National Park, Victoria, Australia. The findings suggest that domestic visitors‟ preferences for Indigenous tourism activities are inconsistently distributed. While many domestic visitors are willing to visit the rock-art sites, they are less interested in experiencing the cultural centre. Despite these differences in preferences, the motivations for engaging in both activities are similar. These motivations are: Learning, connection with history/land, appreciation, learning opportunities for children, explore/discovery, understanding, physical challenge/adventure, and reflection. However, domestic visitors at the destination under investigation are more willing to experience rock-art sites, as they perceive it to be an activity that is more connected with history/land, that involves physical activity and that feels more authentic. Two types of barriers –internal and external- when engaging in these activities are identified. The internal barriers are: Lack of interest, prefer other activities, saturation, and limited time available. The external barriers identified are: Inauthentic/passive, not being in the target audience, lack of awareness, boring, and indoor activity (mentioned as a barrier to participating in the cultural centre). This study proposes that Australian Indigenous tourism strategies look beyond the creation of Indigenous tourism products such as cultural centres, and consider focussing on those areas that can have a more significant impact upon the domestic tourism participation rate in Indigenous tourism. This focus includes marketing strategies directed to the domestic target market, training, and further developing points of differentiation between Indigenous cultures in Australia.

▼ Jobs have a meaningful role in every economy, and tourism is one of the most significant drivers of economic growth. Although the process of transition to a green economy and green jobs has already started in various industries, participation in this respect among tourism workers and professionals in direct, indirect and induced jobs is comparatively low. To explore the reason for such a low participation rate, this study adopted a qualitative method case study approach. This method facilitated an in-depth investigation of the reasons behind the low participation rate. Specifically, the research methods utilised were semi-structured interviews and self-interviewing. Participants included 21 workers and professionals holding tourism-related jobs in Rafsanjan, Kerman, Iran. The findings suggested that older workers and professionals are more understanding of the environmental effect of their jobs. They more readily complied with environmental rules and educated others as to the importance of applying them. They are willing to participate in greening their current jobs for the benefit of the area in which they live. Younger workers and professionals, however, find it more difficult to alter their job process into a more environmentally-friendly way. Despite these differences, the drivers for participating in greening the jobs were the same: financial opportunities and constraints, and the government’s attitude to supporting environmentally friendly policies and regulations. The lack of knowledge, technology and standards, the lack of management, policies and plans, the lack of support and ignorance are the key barriers for participants to do their jobs sustainably. Participants predominantly highlighted external drivers and barriers as being important. However, internal drivers and barriers were also identified in some of the participants’ responses. These included openness to new ideas, and willingness to adopt sustainable environmental policies. Internal barriers to greening jobs were more prominent. These included inappropriate habits, ignorance, lack of internal motivation, lack of a conscientious attitude among customers, and finally lack of trust in the system. This study also explored the workers’ and professionals’ motivations for working in tourism, which can indicate their mindset about altering their job to be eco-friendlier. The results show that younger people working in this industry chose their job because of personal interest and to be in contact with people. Professional and older workers stated that their main reasons for working in the tourism industry are that they regard it as a valuable job and they like to be in touch with nature. Both groups mentioned that unreasonable criticism, ignorant people and government are their main reasons for resenting tourism-based jobs. The barriers to working in tourism posed by tourism jobs are similar to the barriers of greening such jobs. The significant role that SMEs play in the economic development of both developed and developing countries is acknowledged universally. In the development of policy relating to the tourism sector international organizations and tourism scholarship on collaboration and partnerships exhort governments to enter into partnerships with the private sector. One stakeholder that is often omitted is, however, the group of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Only a limited amount of work has been undertaken outside the developed world and sub-Sahara in particular, on issues relating to the involvement of SMEs in tourism policy. In this investigation, a qualitative explorative study was conducted with the aim of providing interpretative and evaluative knowledge on this phenomena. Based on purposive sampling forty key informants of various backgrounds and from different locations in Namibia participated in the study. The results of this research on Namibia contribute to the limited body of literature and knowledge concerning the participation of SMEs in the formulation of tourism policies. The study provides an analysis of the complexity of issues surrounding SME participation in policy formulation. It gives descriptions of the policy process in order to unravel the interaction between the various policy actors, their attitudes and behaviours. The major findings of the study are that in Namibia SMEs are involved in the policy process only in an ad hoc manner. Not only are they less knowledgeable about the policy process and policy content but also they are ignorant of the rules of engagement. The SMEs and interest groups respond to policy formulation as an end goal. The study recommends that SME incorporation in tourism policy formulation should be based on a number of overarching principles and approaches. It is argued SME involvement should be through consultation and empowerment. In addition, an important aspect of local empowerment is the impartation of skills and knowledge that enable SMEs to participate effectively in decision-making beginning with the local level.

▼ This study assesses tourism policy and service quality management in business and conference tourism in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), examining the capacity of KSA to become an international business conference tourism destination. It considers the factors that could favour or hinder the expansion of the conference industry in (KSA), Research was conducted through mixed methods, the fact that qualitative and quantitative designs complement each other - each covering for the weakness of the other including original data drawn from interviews and questionnaires. The target respondents are officials from the Saudi Exhibition and Convention Bureau, which is the government organisation responsible for conferences, drawn from the public sector, and staff and managers of tourism companies drawn from the private sector. Understanding these factors is vital to enable stakeholders to address the opportunities and challenges that may emerge. Substantial analysis of the interviews and questionnaires brings out both important recurring themes and specific detail. The personal views of the participants reflect optimism for the sector's current performance and its prospects in the future. The participants also noted that the continuous increase of the sector's performance in KSA has been secured mostly due to the government's support. It demonstrated that there are several positive factors about KSA that may promote a thriving conference tourism sector. This is contrary to the expectations that global issues such as terrorism, and the negative images they have painted of the Arab world from the Western perspective, which have increased safety concerns for delegates visiting KSA. A further objective was to analyse the quality of service and its effects on business conference tourism in (KSA). This facilitates the rating of the current condition of facilities used in conference tourism, as well as the status of supporting industries such as hospitality. Respondents in this context include external delegates who use these services and can give a first-hand account of their experiences. From these responses, it was established that that a large percentage of external delegates preferred staying in 4- and 5-star hotels. The fact that these hotels were available for these delegates meant that the hospitality industry in KSA is large enough to accommodate conferences and also that the level of customer satisfaction that they offer is relatively high. A further objective was to explore the social and political feasibility of KSA developing as a business conference tourism destination. This objective was addressed using the responses of internal conference delegates to evaluate how the social and political characteristics and perceptions of KSA may influence the future conditions of conference tourism in the country. ▼ This thesis was written as a business plan for the purpose of securing funds for a new micro distillery. Wheat State Distilling is an artisan distillery, manufacturing and selling premium hand-crafted spirits from the regions finest ingredients. I plan to distill premium vodka, whisky, bourbon, rum, gin and liqueurs as well as a luxury line of reserve products. Kansas established a micro-distillery license in July 2012 that opens up the market to this new type of business. The micro-distillery trend is growing across the U.S. and I plan to establish myself as a key player in the region. I will be entering the market early in the industry’s life cycle when consumer interest and demand are high. The proposed location in Wichita Kansas takes advantage of the largest city in Kansas with a metro area population of 630,721 in 2011. The location has visible signage from Interstate 135. The distillery will offer tours and a tasting room. We are able to give customers free samples and sell cocktails to induce purchase. We will use direct sales as well as restaurant and liquor store sales thru distributors. I will be marketing my premium products to upper-middle class and wealthy consumers. My extensive product line will allow marketing to a wide age range and to both sexes. We will focus on online and social media as well as distributor incentives and in-store promotions. Participation in local and regional events for sampling and advertising will increases brand awareness. Analysis of monthly production levels of each of the proposed product has been completed to maximize profits considering time and equipment constraints, cost of inputs and sale price. Regression analysis has been completed examining many factors that contribute to the selling price of micro distilled spirits. Financial models for years one through ten with risk analysis are included. If I reach my sales goals of 25,000 cases per year by year five, which is equal to my closest competition, High Plains Distilling, there is a potential for $548,500 or more per year in profit.
