▼ This thesis analysed the representation of women as voters, politicians and relatives of politicians in the newspaper coverage of every elections from 1918 until 2010; in order to offer historical context to the existing literature about women, media and politics. Content analysis and feminist critical discourse analysis were employed to track the changes and continuities in their mediated representations across the twenty five elections studied. The study shows that across time, the representation of voters changed the least. Voters tended to be constructed as mothers and thrifty housewives whose political views stemmed from their familial roles and domestic responsibilities. The extent to which they were depicted as politically engaged and were quoted did increase over time however they continued to be predominantly written about rather than allowed to speak for themselves. Contrary to the results of previous studies, politicians were not associated with stereotypically feminine policy areas, but were instead gendered through their construction as important representatives for women voters and their campaign styles. Over time the proportion of items offering negative evaluations increased. The proportion which made personalised references to their appearance or age, and included their voices peaked during the 1960s and 1970s and then declined so that contemporary politicians are as likely to experience both as their interwar forebears. The results from 2010 however suggested that personalisation may once again be increasing. The role of relatives in electoral coverage changed the most of the three groups. During the interwar years they were depicted as active political campaigners whose contribution was largely welcomed, after war their role became more focused on their personal lives. The coverage also became increasingly focused on the wives of party leaders. By the late 1980s, leaders wives were once again constructed taking an active role in the campaign but these interventions were portrayed as illegitimate and threatening to democracy. The coverage of relatives became increasingly personalised over time focusing on their appearance and its appeal to the electorate. The newspaper coverage of women in electoral campaigns has always been, and continues to be gendered in specific ways. Women have consistently had their level of political activity trivialised and their voices marginalised. They were domesticated through the construction of their political priorities and campaign styles and they received personalised coverage which was undeniably gendered. In effect women were routinely linked to the private sphere, rendering their political participation in the public domain problematic.

Because communication is vital to all educational activities, it is essential that educators be continually increasing their knowledge of this process in order to facilitate effective learning. For nearly two weeks in March of 1967, Simon Fraser University was the setting of an educational controversy that involved the administration, faculty and students. The conflict, which was initiated by the behavior of a group of teaching assistants, generated community-wide and province-wide interest. It was the coverage of this conflict by the local press that was examined in this study. It was hypothesized that the editorial attitude toward a specific issue would affect communication in the news columns concerning that issue. The newspaper reporter was considered a gatekeeper because he controls che flow of news in a communication channel. In order to obtain a general picture of the local press coverage of Simon Fraser University, it was necessary to examine the history of the relationship between the university and the newsmen. This was achieved through a story-count analysis of articles about Sixor. Fraser which appeared during the period from July, 1963 to March, 1967, inclusive. An analysis of the gatekeeping behavior of the newspapers involved an examination of the total related content flowing through the news channel and was accomplished by utilizing various content analytic methods. These were; contingency analysis, a qualitative IV procedure that seeks Lo cxar.M-.-.c the pro'oabil: ly Chat a specified symbol will be drawn r.iven that other spec i fii'd sy~.bo"l:; are in that or related units; evaluative assertion analysis, a quantitative procedure for ".ensuring the evaluative intensity and direction ot certain concepts; direction analysis, which involved determining the evaluative direction of each paragraph.; and a display index, which provided scores on the display variables that given one item prominence over another. A questionnaire was also given to the local education editors, in order to gain information about their background and duties. snaile the results of the background analysis and the analysis of the gatekeeping behavior seemed to support the hypothesis they did not prove anything but only suggested that the gatekeeping behavior of these particular newspapers, in this paricular case, seeir.ed to have been effected by the editorial attitude. However, several variables were discussed which may have affected the results. These included: the social organization of the newsroom; the attitudes and perceptions of the reporter; selectivity; the physical production of the newspaper; the student press; polarization of the conflict; and the responsibility of the newspaper. It was suggested that education, as a discipline, must pay more heed to the role of communication in the educational process and must be prepared to support research in this area.

▼ News media play a significant role in shaping the national image of other countries, especially in the context of China (PRC). They have been and remain the main source of information for the British public about developments in China but representations evolve over time. This thesis examines how a particular aspect of China s state actions has been reported. The study examines how the national imagery of China and Tibet has been represented in the British national press over the Cold War period and beyond. This study investigates media representations of the Tibetan conflict and how the events related to this were represented and portrayed in the British national daily newspapers from 1949 to 2009. It examines the frames chosen by the press and the influence of the sources (especially external journalistic influence) on the frame-building process. Through a comparison of coverage by the British newspapers over time, it determines the changing similarities and differences in representations of Tibet according to their partisanship and newspaper formats. The research involved a quantitative content analysis and a qualitative frame analysis. The research showed that generally there were greater similarities than differences in the way the British press represented the Tibet issue from 1949 to 2009. Only the pro-Communist Daily Working/Morning Star with a purely Communist canon of news values adopted a completely different framing strategy to report the events. Other British press aligned closely with the UK government by reproducing and reinforcing the dominant capitalist ideology. This political motivation resulted in their approval of stable and familiar frames. In addition, there were differences in the frame types used by the British press between the early Cold War, near the end of the Cold War and the post-Cold War periods. The year 1989 could be seen as a turning point. The research enriches the concept of Herman and Chomsky s propaganda model and contributes to existing media framing studies on Western media s representations of China.

▼ [Cartoon panels omitted] Yes, we do have a lot of "in" expressions; they are, in fact, the motive for this thesis, which discusses slang and informal usage in the major Vancouver newspapers (The Vancouver Sun and The Vancouver Province). The creation of these non-standard usage groups in language arose through the concept of standardization. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries lexicographers and grammarians, especially men like Dr. Samuel Johnson proposed that the English language should be purified and “fixed"; that, in fact, it should be standardized for all time. But only dead languages remain lifeless; live languages branch infinitely in all directions. Thus, these Renaissance pursuers of standardization in language ironically created, through their efforts, the substandard - the slang, informal and other areas not relegated to the "cleansed" version. lt was hoped that these vulgarities would thereby drop from use and cease to infiltrate the standard level of language. However, they did not, and they remain to add much to the life of the English language today. It was felt that any examination of how effectively intertwined "slanguage" was with that body of English called standard, would be best realized through the study of newspapers. Newspapers occupy a special place in the realm of the written word, a place not far, I believe, from the spoken word. They reveal the daily story of a community in action and interaction, presenting the discontinuous variety and incongruity of ordinary life. Newspapers reflect on a rapid, daily basis the multiplicity of social sub-groups, the mark of immediacy in transmission, and the permissive quality in our approach to language today. For purposes of examination the newspapers were arranged into categories following the pattern in which the papers are usually presented. Thus, the General category, the Editorial section, the entertainment pages, the Sports page, the Comics and the Financial areas. Slang and informal samples were culled and made up the lexicon contained within the body of this thesis. Examination of this corpus of words indicates that the newspaper is very much what Marshall McLuhan terms a group confessional form or communal mosaic. Through their slang and informal language numerous sub-groups are clearly in evidence. lt is also clear that their productive vocabulary changes continuously and rapidly, rarely remaining "fixed" as the eighteenth century authoritarians would have wished. Like the authoritarians in their age, we in ours are experiencing a marked increase in the awareness of language. We now seem to know enough to enjoy observing how the language of a sub-culture may enrich the mainstream of language and by observation "slanguage" gains daily on standard language. Yes, Snoopy, we do have a lot of "in" expressions.

▼ This dissertation is a comparative analysis of New Zealand’s and Vancouver Island’s print culture between 1853 and 1862. It utilises the colonial press as a key archive to track the resonance of ideas and arguments across the British Empire at a time when violence in the colonies called imperial authority into question. It demonstrates that in this moment of imperial crisis, humanitarian language remained politically efficacious and widely deployed in both New Zealand and Vancouver Island. This usage occurred in spite of and sometimes because of colonists’ anxiety related to the threat of indigenous violence. The popularity of humanitarianism was also influenced by the press’ symbolic role as an embodiment of public opinion and the British Empire’s status as an agent of Providence. Influenced by Harold Innis and James Carey, this dissertation pays close attention to the mechanics of news transmission, especially how the practice of ‘cut and paste’ journalism reproduced colonial news across the British Empire. Forms of argument mattered just as much as facts in this context. Through a comparative approach, this dissertation is able to assess the features both common and unique to New Zealand and Vancouver Island, including the effects of their divergent locations within imperial networks. While New Zealand had established press connections with Great Britain and other settler colonies, newspaper editors in Vancouver Island considered themselves on the edge of empire. Indeed, New Zealand colonists’ perceptions of metropolitan surveillance shaped interpretations of the Taranaki war. In contrast, Vancouver Island’s isolation facilitated an interpretive dichotomy. While the colonial press offered pervasive reportage of local Aboriginal violence, Vancouver Island’s boosters provided metropolitan readers with disarming accounts of local Aboriginal peoples and no details of colonists’ anxiety. Coverage of anxiety and violence and the use of humanitarian themes often coalesced, informed by colonial editors’ imagined audiences, colonial executives’ ties to missionary humanitarians, and perceptions of metropolitan control. ▼ Prostitution remains a controversial issue in the United Kingdom. The period of 2000 to 2009 saw a range of disparate solutions, from legalization to abolition, debated by policy makers and feminists and covered extensively in the news media. The debates raised questions about the public's rights, the treatment of prostitution as a legitimate form of work in the liberal economy, the limits on women's choice to enter sex work, and the extent of violence and harm experienced by sex workers. Definitions of prostitution are enacted via a complex relationship between legal and cultural discourses. The media uses certain tropes that create discursive boundaries in the debates. The first principal research question is, "How are competing discourses of prostitution conveyed in contemporary British news media?" The project provides an empirical analysis of the competing constructions of prostitution in British news media over the last decade, focusing on the depiction of sex workers, clients and the phenomenon of prostitution generally. Previous operationalizations of Habermas' theory of communication suggest that it is an effective approach for revealing distortions in media discourses. The study operationalized the validity claims of Truth, Sincerity and Legitimacy and systematically applied them to a sample of 342 articles from The Daily Mail and The Guardian, theoretically representing both the popular political right- and left-leaning framings of issues. Key findings of this project were that many media discourses are distorted compared to empirical realities, and that they are often expressed in dualisms and dichotomies. Media constructions of prostitution also reflect long-standing cultural themes. Nineteenth-century discourses of prostitutes as "fallen" – simultaneously doomed victims and immoral seducers – also appeared in many of the media characterizations of sex workers today. Finally, the dissertation argues that the neo-Victorian novels of Michel Faber and Sarah Waters consider prostitution with particular attention of the persistent historical cultural tropes. A second key finding of the project is that literature provides alternative ways of conceptualizing questions of "choice" and "harm." By including an examination of literature, the dissertation explores alternative, more nuanced perspectives that may allow superior understandings of the phenomenon than many of the "factual" media accounts. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the British press shapes the image of Lithuania. To achieve the result certain questions were raised: how often is Lithuania mentioned in the selected newspapers; what are the major topics/coverage that mention Lithuania; what is the role of Lithuania in those topics; what attitude is being formed towards Lithuania in those topics; what means are used in the image formation. Two major British newspapers The Times and The Guardian were taken for the analysis of the articles. For the research all articles between the period of the 1st January to the 31st December 2008 were used. The methods of content analysis were mostly applied though the comparison of different newspapers was also selected. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first part is used to present the general views on the media, theoretical approach, main research on national image that is formed by the media. The second part reveals the means of how and the reasons why certain sources for the reaseach were selected: the selection of the media, newspapers, articles and periods; defining the variables and formation of the code (coding schemata); gathering of information; data analysis; concluding remarks. ▼ Although lexical priming is claimed to provide a way 'forward' for textual critical discourse analysis (CDA) to update its paradigm (Hoey, 2004), not many priming CDA studies have yet been undertaken. Recent CDA research has just begun to appreciate the phenomenon but failed to explicate it; Baker (2010) identified the lexical priming of terrorism in the press discourse representing Muslims, however, he called for a cognitive account to untangle the phenomenon of lexical priming in corpus-based CDA. The current CDA research explores how the use of the term Muslim wom(a)en (MW(s)) has developed diachronically in the British press, in an attempt to show how current representations of Muslim women (Al-Hejin, 2012; Baker, et al., 2013) can be understood and explicated through a cognitive-assisted corpus-based CDA that utilises the concept of lexical priming. I argue, here, for greater incorporation of cognitive semantics into corpus-based CDA (Otaif, 2015) in a model (a priming model of CDA) that is expected to capture the ideological orientations (social bias) embodied cumulatively in media discourse. For this purpose, corpora of five British newspapers were constructed with a total size of 2,473,680 tokens/words, representing the range of ideological orientations and the conventional dichotomies in the British press. It was found that the Left-wing (LW) press significantly associates (epistemically primes) Muslim women with negativity by representing them as powerless and agentless patients affected by violent (Islamic) force who need to be 'empowered' and 'emancipated'. On the other hand, the Right-wing (RW) press is more interested in narrowing the image of Muslim women, after 7/7, to controversies over veiling and presenting them as problematic social actors who 'resist' and 'refuse' to adhere to judicial and political calls for 'removal' of face-veils (bans). The most used source domain in the conceptual structures associating Muslim women was that of force-dynamics where a force is used against or for Muslim women which, in turn, reflects a power conflict between the 'liberal' governments and Muslim minorities in Europe.

▼ This thesis explores the experiences of female emigrants from Britain to Australia in the mid-nineteenth century, a transitionary era in which penal transportation faded, gold rushes boomed, and settler colonialism fostered a new society. This society flourished in six varied, yet wholly British, settler colonies; the presence of Indigenous populations was largely ignored by emigration advocates and emigrants alike. Despite the lack of an explicit discussion about race, a study of these women is rich in themes from gender and sexuality to class and social mobility, presented within a transnational context of migration. This thesis situates female emigration in a new imperial history framework, reading against the archival grain of traditional sources such as emigration society and Colonial Office records to illustrate the emigration process while also acknowledging women's individuality and agency as they left behind homes and families, navigated the moral concerns of ships and immigration depots, and built new lives and societies in the Australian settler colonies. The thesis also turns to non-archival sources such as women's fictional writings to address women's personal experiences and find their voices in an era and situation largely dominated and directed by men. Starting with emigration society and Colonial Office archives, this thesis challenges the generalisation of emigrants as young potential brides; on the contrary, women of varying ages and backgrounds emigrated. This study also exposes the idealism and naivety prevalent among emigration advocates. Officials presented a logical system of emigration and settlement, but immigrants faced financial and physical challenges which threatened success yet were generally attributed to poor personal character. With these disparities between emigration promoters' ideals and women's realities in mind, the thesis turns to other sources to explore the immigrant experience. Newspapers expose colonial debates, and an analysis of fictional works by immigrant women writers clarifies the challenges women faced in settler colonies. Although female emigration has been examined in the past, this thesis demonstrates that it is still possible to enrich our understanding of imperial migration and the role of women in the empire.

The thesis examines lexical and structural features of euphemisms and their use in British newspapers and magazines, focusing on the ones referring to tabooed parts of the human body. The analysis is based on selected articles of online newspapers The Guardian, The Sun, Cosmopolitan and Men’s Health, published between 2010 and 2016. The authors of the articles use euphemisms to avoid unpleasant or inappropriate expressions for intimate parts of the body in order to maintain a public decorum. Many euphemisms are humorous or playful and add to the light-hearted, often humorous style of communication with an audience. They are also used to support sarcasm and irony, particularly in the media with a sensationalistic agenda. The most frequently used euphemisms are generic terms and figurative expressions. We also find diminutives, clippings, borrowings, onomatopoeic and phonemically modified expressions. Their frequency varies according to different topics, newspaper genres and the target audience of the media. They are mostly used in the topics related to fashion, love, sex and celebrity news. They are more frequent in tabloids and gossip magazines than in broadsheet newspapers.

Magistrsko delo raziskuje leksikalne in strukturne lastnosti evfemizmov ter njihovo rabo v britanskih časopisih in revijah, osredotoča pa se na tiste, ki poimenujejo tabuizirane dele telesa. Analiza izrazov temelji na izbranih člankih elektronskih časopisov The Guardian, The Sun, Cosmopolitan in Men's Health, objavljenih med letoma 2010 in 2016. Avtorji člankov uporabljajo evfemizme, da bi se izognili neprijetnim ali neprimernim izrazom za intimne dele telesa in ohranili dobro javno podobo medijev. Mnogi evfemizmi so šaljivi ali igrivi in prispevajo k vedremu in šaljivemu načinu komuniciranja s publiko. Sodelujejo tudi pri izražanju sarkazma in ironije, predvsem v medijih s senzacionalističnim poročanjem. V evfemističen namen se najpogosteje uporabljajo splošni izrazi in metafore. Najdemo še manjšalnice, krnjenke, izposojenke, onomatopejske besede ter fonemsko spremenjene izraze. Pogostost evfemizmov v posameznih medijih je odvisna od teme, časopisnega žanra in ciljne publike. Pojavljajo se predvsem v člankih, ki obravnavajo modo, ljubezen, spolnost ter novice o znanih osebah. Pogostejši so v tabloidih in trač revijah kot v resnih časopisih.

▼ This dissertation examines how news and information circulated among select colonies in the British and French Caribbean during a series of military conflicts from 1763 to 1804, including the American War of Independence (1775-1783), French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802), and the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804). The colonies included in this study are Barbados, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint-Domingue. This dissertation argues that the sociopolitical upheaval experienced by colonial residents during these military conflicts led to an increased desire for news that was satiated by the development and improvement of many processes of collecting and distributing information. This dissertation looks at some of these processes, the ways in which select social groups both influenced and were affected by them, and why such phenomena occurred in the greater context of the 18th and early 19th century Caribbean at large. In terms of the types of processes, it examines various kinds of print culture, such as colonial newspapers, books, and almanacs, as well as correspondence records among different social groups. In terms of which groups are studied, these include printers, postal service workers, colonial and naval officials, and Catholic missionaries. The dissertation is divided into five chapters, the first of which provides insight into the operation of the mail service established in the aforementioned colonies, and the ways in which the Atlantic Revolutions impacted their service in terms of the different historical actors responsible for collecting and distributing correspondences. Chapter two looks at select British and French colonial printers, their print shops, and the book trade in the Caribbean isles during the 18th century. Chapter three delves into the colonial newspapers and compares the differences and similarities among government-sanctioned newspapers vis-à-vis independently produced papers. It uses the case of the Haitian Revolution to track how news of the slave insurrection was disseminated or constricted in the weeks immediately following the night of 22 August 1791. Chapter four examines the colonial almanac as a means of connecting colonial residents with people across the wider Atlantic World. It also surveys the development of these pocketbooks from mere astrological calendars to essential items that owners customized and frequently carried on their person, given the swathes of information they featured after the American War of Independence. The final chapter looks at the daily operations of Capuchin and Dominican missionaries in Martinique and Guadeloupe at the end of the 18th century and how they maintained their communications within the islands and with the heads of their Catholic orders in France, as well as in Rome. Overall, this project aims to fill in some of the gaps in the literature regarding how select British and French colonial residents received and dispatched information, and the effect this had in their respective Caribbean islands.
