▼ Esta Tesis hace un recorrido por el pensamiento del filósofo y sociólogo francés Pierre Bourdieu, quien, profundamente comprometido con la política, denuncia con especial vehemencia la existencia de relaciones ocultas de poder y desigualdad que estarían actuando, con la más absoluta impunidad, tras la aparente normalidad del orden social. Concretamente, lo consideramos un autor especialmente interesante para abordar la cuestión de la reproducción social de la subordinación femenina y de los efectos catastróficos que ésta tiene sobre la vida de las mujeres en todas sus dimensiones, personal, social, cultural, política, económica, etc. Bourdieu, desde un pensamiento de corte relacional, otorga centralidad al cuerpo y a las prácticas, rechazando con ello lo que describe como un exceso de intelectualismo del que, a su juicio, adolecería toda la tradición filosófica, política y, también, feminista moderna. Insiste en que debemos mirar más allá de lo que a simple vista parece el orden normal de las cosas, asegurando que lo que vemos como el natural desarrollo de las sociedades oculta tras de sí potentes mecanismos de diferenciación y desigualdad que son los que están haciendo pasar la dominación, la subordinación de unos y el mandato de otros, como lo que es y no puede ser de otro modo. Consideramos, entonces, que su teoría constituye una valiosa aportación a los estudios de género. Cuestiona el conocimiento construido por ser un trasunto de los sistemas de dominación. Como heredero de la Escuela de la Sospecha, Bourdieu dinamita la doxa y si se muestra partidario de reelaborar conceptos como el de objetividad, yendo más allá de los dilemas entre subjetivismo y objetivismo, es para hacer visible y constatable las realidades de las desigualdades humanas, preferentemente las de clase, pero también las de género y raza-etnicidad. Al formular el marco teórico relativo a la violencia simbólica, Bourdieu lucha por dinamitar la normalización y naturalización de las opresiones. Este proyecto de sociología reflexiva es paralelo, y enormemente útil, para la empresa de los estudios feministas. Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

This thesis explores the social processes that emanate from the interaction between young people and adults. All adults have been a young person and have at some point in their youth suffered denigration from adults. Yet adults participating in the research for this thesis have, in turn, committed similar denigration of young people. This thesis seeks to address this phenomenon, drawing upon theories of moral panics and the work of Pierre Bourdieu. Conducted from the research position of a Baby Boomer with a lifetime career working with young people, yet also susceptible to denigrating young people, this study finds that notions of popular memory (Brabazon) and musical ‘latching’ (De Nora) combine to privilege youth experiences in the formation of the habitus, especially in regard to attitudes towards popular culture and technology. It is this privileging of each generation’s youth experiences which informs and moulds adult attitudes towards ensuing youth generations. Data collected from semi-structured interviews and focus groups, along with secondary source material (internet, magazine and newspaper articles, contemporary music tracks) provided the raw material for analysis. The methodology used to undertake this analysis was Bourdieu’s theory of practice. The concepts of habitus and misrecognition have been central in analysing how youth cultural experiences inform the evolution of the adult habitus. The embodiment of early youth cultural experiences leads adults to the inescapable conclusion that theirs was the most genuine youth experience and that any youth cultural experience of ensuing generations cannot match this perceived authenticity. This misrecognition then permits the adult to denigrate the youth cultural product and the experiences of ensuing youth generations, as well as the young people themselves.

▼ Kansainvälisessä kulttuurisosiologiassa on viime aikoina tutkittu aiempaa aktiivisemmin kulttuuripääoman periytymistä maun ja kulttuurisen osallistumisen osalta. Suomessa tällaista tutkimusta ei toistaiseksi ole laajassa mitassa tehty, ja tämä tutkielma osaltaan täyttää tuota aukkoa. Tutkielman tutkimuskysymykset ovat ensiksi se, millainen yhteys vanhempien kulttuuripääomalla on lasten kulttuuripääomaan, ja toiseksi se, kuinka vahvana yhteys säilyy, kun muita lapsen kulttuuripääomaan yhteydessä olevia tekijöitä vakioidaan. Tutkimusasetelma rakentuu toisaalta Pierre Bourdieun kehittelemän distinktioteorian ja toisaalta sosiaalisen liikkuvuuden tutkimustradition varaan. Tutkimusaineistona käytetään Kulttuuri ja vapaa-aika Suomessa 2007 -postikyselyaineistoa (N=1388), jota analysoidaan kvantitatiivisin perustekniikoin sekä multinomiaalisen logistisen regressioanalyysin avulla. Kulttuuripääoman muodoista tarkastellaan institutionalisoitunutta kulttuuripääomaa sekä kehollistunutta kulttuuripääomaa. Institutionaalinen kulttuuripääoma operationalisoidaan koulutukseksi, ja kehollistunut kulttuuripääoma vanhempien osalta korkeakulttuuriseksi kiinnostukseksi ja lapsen osalta kulttuuriseksi harrastuneisuudeksi. Tutkielman ensimmäinen päätulos on, että vanhempien kulttuuripääomalla on vahva yhteys lasten kulttuuripääomaan. Toisen päätuloksen mukaan yhteys säilyy vahvana senkin jälkeen, kun lapsen sukupuoli, ikä, ammattiluokka, nettotulot ja asuinalue vakioidaan. Lapsen koulutusta ennustavat vahvimmin vanhempien koulutus sekä lapsen ikä ja sukupuoli, mutta vanhempien korkeakulttuurisella kiinnostuksella ei ole merkitystä lapsen koulutuksen ennustajana. Lapsen kulttuurista harrastuneisuutta puolestaan ennustavat vahvimmin lapsen sukupuoli, vanhempien korkeakulttuurinen kiinnostus, vanhempien koulutus ja lapsen koulutus. Tutkielman johtopäätöksenä esitetään, että ensinnäkin kulttuuripääoma periytyy Suomessa 2000-luvulla paitsi institutionaalisessa muodossa, myös kehollistuneessa muodossa. Toiseksi lapsen kulttuuripääomaa selittävät enemmän vanhempien kulttuuripääoma ja lapsen sukupuoli kuin muut lapsen sosiaalista asemaa kuvaavat tekijät. Tutkielman tuloksia ja niiden merkitystä arvioidaan lopuksi suhteessa viimeaikaiseen suomalaiseen ja kansainväliseen kulttuuripääoman periytymistä koskevaan tutkimuskirjallisuuteen.

This work aims to investigate the power struggle between the various agents in the Brazilian musical scene in the sixties, analyzing it from historical observations and accounts from the period studied in conjunction with Pierre Bourdieus market and field theories on symbolic goods and bringing these theories together to study the Brazilian Popular Music (MPB). The changes in the habitus in the MPB scene, as well as how those changes took place since Bossa Nova entered the music world, made the arrival and ascent of new - and sometimes opposing - musical genres possible, such as the Canção de Protesto (Protest Song), the Iê, Iê, Iê and, finally and especially, Tropicalism, pointing out aspects like struggle for predominance, strategies to take over control, relationships between oppressors and the oppressed, field dynamics, and capitalization of symbolic goods. The research was carried out by means of an extensive bibliographical survey of original and historical material, as well as a great deal of Bourdieus sociological work. The intent of this dissertation is to understand how those changes in the Brazilian musical web enabled the emergence of a unique and continuously changing style like the Tropicalism, a style capable of absorbing all others, which came before and after it, but keeping the structure of its supremacy and the accumulation of symbolic goods of its main founders - Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil - unchanged. The research seeks a new approach to the History of Popular Brazilian Music, in an alternate light, which may become a way of understanding the development of mass culture in Brazil

O presente trabalho investiga as relações de forças entre os diversos agentes do campo musical brasileiro durante a década de sessenta, analisada a partir de observações históricas e relatos da época, em confluência com as teorias dos campos e do mercado de bens simbólicos de Pierre Bourdieu, trazendo essas teorias para o estudo de música popular no Brasil. Abordam-se as mudanças do habitus no campo da MPB e de que forma essas mudanças, a partir do advento da Bossa Nova, permitiram o surgimento e a ascensão de novos estilos musicais, por vezes contrastantes como a Canção de Protesto, o Iê, iê, iê e, finalmente e principalmente, o Tropicalismo, apontando aspectos como luta pela hegemonia, estratégias de tomada de poder, relações entre dominantes e dominados, dinâmica do campo e capitalização de bens simbólicos. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida através de uma extensa pesquisa bibliográfica em material original e historiográfico, além de grande parte da bibliografia sociológica de Bourdieu. ABSTRACT In this doctoral thesis Finnish theatre criticism and its writers are examined during the period of twenty years; the focus of the dissertation is alteration in the theatre criticism. The background material of the thesis comprises fifteen theatre criticisms published in five Finnish daily newspapers (Helsingin Sanomat, Kaleva, Kansan Uutiset, Aamulehti and Hufvudstadsbladet) in the years 1983, 1993 and 2003. The primary material of the study is dual consisting of sixteen theme interviews made in the years 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 with the Finnish theatre critics who have written their criticism in popular publicity (popular mass media) and secondly 185 editorials of the Finnish theatre magazine Teatteri published in elite publicity (for the theatre-interested-people) during the years 1983 - 2003. In the study qualitative methods are applied. The theatre criticisms are described and interpreted by using the method of content analysis and classical pattern of the criticism. Further, the interviews of the critics and the editorials of the theatre magazine are examined by using the method of thematic text analysis and with help of the concepts of Pierre Bourdieu. The study belongs to the field of communication studies focusing on cultural journalism and mass communication. The centre of the period enquired is the year of 1993 when Finland experienced a deep recession. The year 1993 is regarded as a clear landmark in the alteration of theatre criticism in both economic and social sense. The analysis demonstrates that the contents of theatre criticism have been changed during the period inquired: theatre criticisms have been shortened and their literary style has been changed towards journalistic writing style. Similarly, public discussion around theatre in popular publicity has been reduced or even disappeared. In Bourdieu´s concepts,the contents of theatre criticism have mostly been influenced by the field of the economy although its influence has not been apparent. The financial difficulties of the media companies have leaded up to a situation in which theatre critics are forced to be satisfied with scantier criticism than earlier.

TIIVISTELMÄ Väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan muutoksen näkökulmasta suomalaista teatterikritiikkiä ja sen tekijöitä kahdenkymmenen vuoden aikahaarukassa. Työn tausta-aineistona ovat viidestä suomalaisesta päivälehdestä (Helsingin Sanomat, Kaleva, Kansan Uutiset, Aamulehti ja Hufvudstadsbladet) poimitut viisitoista teatterikritiikkiä vuosilta 1983, 1993 ja 2003. Tutkimuksen pääaineiston muodostavat vuosina 2004, 2005, 2006 ja 2009 tehdyt kuusitoista, populaarijulkisuudessa kirjoittaneen suomalaisen teatterikriitikon teemahaastattelua sekä eliittijulkisuuden alueella ilmestyvän Teatteri-lehden pääkirjoitukset (185 kpl) vuosilta 1983 - 2003. A presente pesquisa consiste em um estudo da atuação da mídia nas políticas públicas de segurança desenvolvidas no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul durante o Governo de 1999 a 2003. O objetivo é oferecer uma abordagem sociológica do Direito a partir da matriz teórica de Pierre Bourdieu em um esforço para compreender a extensão do papel que a mídia e seus agentes estão conduzindo nas esferas jurídicas e políticas. Ao desenvolver os estudos sociológicos, principalmente os referentes à Pierre Bourdieu, o trabalho pretende esclarecer a dominação que os agentes midiáticos são capazes de obter uma vez que os meios de comunicação de massa atingem as suas finalidades. Não somente a autonomia dos membros da sociedade é colocada em risco, mas também o papel que cumpre o Estado é igualmente diminuído por tal conduta. O primeiro capítulo desenvolve as lições de Bourdieu estabelecendo a influência da mídia na opinião pública e como a rotina dos agentes midiáticos sustenta a exploração da mesma. O segundo capítulo pretende examinar a abordagem que os agentes da mídia assumem para se inserir nas ações próprias do Governo. This research is formed by a study about de manifestation of the media actions around the public security policies developed in the state of Rio Grande do Sul during the government of the period from 1999 to 2003. The main goal is to provide a sociological view towards Law from Pierre Bourdieus theory in a struggle to comprehend the extention of the role that media agents have been conducting in the political and judicial areas. By developing the sociological studies mainly from Pierre Bourdieu, the research attempts to clarify the domination that media agents are capable of achieving once the mass media reaches its goal. Not only the autonomy of society members are put at risk but the role that the state develop is also diminished by doing so. The first chapter focus on Bourdieus findings from establishing the media influence on public opinion and how media agents routines sustain the exploration of it. The second chapter attempts to examines the approach that media agents take to get into the conduction of government actions itself. And in the third chapter, theres a research about the approximation that media introduce and reinforce towards public institutions such as the judiciary and the political representations of the state

With the entrance of women in every segment of work, since the conquests of the feminist movement, it was inevitable that they occupied positions that originally belonged to the masculine universe, among them that of the soldier. However, the insertion of the feminine segment in this universe brought with it a series of issues still occult in gender relations within the military organization, generating a strong resistance from leaders, partners and subordinates concerning the presence of women in a place that, according to men, does not belong to them. In this sense, the present dissertation had the objective to develop a study about symbolic dimension within gender relations in the military organization focusing the enrolled masculine domination and symbolic violence in this place, particularly in the Brazilian Army that admitted the first military women in 1992 to occupy only administrative positions â which prevails up to the present. Through the case study method in the Military School with non-participant observation, and interviews, together with the praxeology of Pierre Bourdieu, the present research sought comprehending the dialectics between social structures (military field) and mental structures (military habitus) that operate in the (re)production of naturalized positions (doxa) and of its internalization (symbolic violence) by the members of the military organization, in particular the military women who are oppressed by a patriarchal inheritance that is strengthened by the characteristics of the military organization, such as: power/distinction, hierarchy/discipline, and honor/tradition. In this direction, the data collected in the field research disclose that, in the optics of the interviewed ones, the Army resists the feminine presence in military activities, particularly in combat, and this resistance is manifested through symbolic power. This invisible power, almost magical, allows getting the equivalent of what is obtained by force, perpetuating the symbolic barriers that hinder the acceptance of women as effective members of the military universe.

Com a entrada da mulher em todos os segmentos do mundo do trabalho, a partir das conquistas advindas do movimento feminista, foi inevitÃvel que elas ocupassem cargos que originalmente eram exclusivos do universo masculino, entre eles o de soldado. Entretanto, a inserÃÃo do feminino nesse universo trouxe consigo uma sÃrie de questÃes ainda ocultas na relaÃÃo homem-mulher na organizaÃÃo militar, gerando uma forte resistÃncia de chefes, pares e subordinados quanto Ã presenÃa delas num mundo que, segundo eles, nÃo as pertence. In search of a wider elucidation, concerning a concept of basis to contemporary Sociology, the work goes through an exegetical way around the idea of habitus, from the contribution made by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Counted as one of the most remarkable sociologists th of the 20 Century, Bourdieu has established his work, which is still deeply influent in Social Sciences, in the concept of habitus as an individual compartment where interferences, external to the agent, reverberate, undertaking a new effort in the delimitation of this idea, already considered millenary in Human Sciences. By appointing an indissoluble onto-epistemological relation between habitus and field, the bourdieusian sociology indicates new theoretical and empirical boundaries for the investigation of the relation among the instances related to the agencies and structures. The bourdieusian gnosiological step, materialized in the utilization of the notion of habitus, has considered itself as able of overcoming, in a more definitive way, the infinity of sociological dichotomies, many times expressed in oppositions such as objectivism/subjectivism and nominalism/realism , which, if considered from the point of view of a detailed analysis of the individual and/or society, consists in regarding varied nuances between both spheres, without, necessarily, making common cause with any of them. Parallely to the use of the concept of habitus in many sociological parties by Bourdieu, there is a profuse debate about which instruments the sociological analysis should rely on, concerning the scientific process of perception and understanding of reality. The research also relies on the idea of habitus as a primordial concept for perceiving theoretical-analytical perspectives among the many fundamental tendencies in Social Sciences, as well as among the most illuminating exponents from different moments in Sociology, which, undeniably, keep a constant dialogue with the theoretical and empirical panoramas delineated by Pierre Bourdieu.

Em busca de uma elucidação maior sobre um conceito fulcral à sociologia contemporânea, o trabalho percorre uma trajetória exegética ao redor da idéia de habitus a partir da contribuição do sociólogo francês Pierre Bourdieu. Como um dos mais notáveis sociólogos no século XX, Bourdieu embalou toda sua obra, ainda profundamente influente nas ciências sociais, com o conceito de habitus como um compartimento individual onde ressoam ingerências externas ao agente, empreendendo um novo esforço na delimitação desta idéia já milenar nas ciências humanas. Ao estabelecer uma indecomponível relação onto-epistemológica entre habitus e campo, a sociologia bourdieusiana aponta novas balizas teóricas e empíricas para a investigação das relações entre as instâncias relativas às agências e às estruturas. Darbo objektu pasitelkus meninį lauką arba, tiksliau, vizualinių menų polaukį, siekiama atsakyti, ką reiškia „būti menininku“ šiuolaikinėje valstybėje, kokia yra meninio lauko struktūra ir kaip jaunasis kūrėjas save konstruoja joje. This thesis analyzes an artistic field and its perception by art creators. It seeks to integrate theoretical and empirical levels of analysis by reviewing the most important theories of art sociology, analyzing tendencies of the contemporary cultural policy and researching empirically an approach of young Lithuanian art creators. The object of this paper is artistic field or, to be more precise, subfield of visual arts. I discuss what it means to be an artist in a contemporary state, what kind of structure an artistic field has and how a young creator constructs himself/herself. Firstly, the paper focuses on various sociological perspectives and construction of the category of “art creator” in them. It analyzes art as collective action and “art world/worlds” in the theories of Arthur Danto, George Dickie and Howard S. Becker. The thesis also argues that artistic field theory of Pierre Bourdieu is one of the most significant perspectives in art sociology and the best methodological approach for Lithuanian artistic field’s analysis. Moreover, the paper reviews French sociologist Nathalie’s Heinich’s sociology of singularity. Second, this study explores strategies of contemporary cultural policy, models of support for the arts, control of the arts and audience development in the USA, United Kingdom and Sweden. Ce travail se propose de revenir sur l'intervention de Louis Althusser dans le champ de la théorisation sociale et politique. Il a été motivé par la conviction qu'aujourd'hui Althusser, bien que chronologiquement proche de nous, est oublié, voire refoulé : ainsi, son objectif aura été à la fois de restituer, par l'examen des sources publiées (aussi bien du vivant de l'auteur qu'après sa mort) et de documents inédits du fonds de l'IMEC, la théorie ou l'esquisse de théorisation althussérienne de l'État et de mesurer un « effet-Althusser » sur la conjoncture philosophique française des années 1970 et suivantes (auprès de ses collaborateurs fidèles, comme Balibar, et dans une moindre mesure, Poulantzas, ou infidèles, comme Rancière ou Badiou, aussi bien qu'auprès de ses ennemis « intimes » Foucault et Bourdieu). Le résultat de cette enquête sur la théorisation althussérienne de la politique et de l'État a révélé une tension insurmontable en son sein : la politique y est écartelée entre deux modes d'existence distincts et, à la limite, incompatibles, entre, d'un côté, la thèse d'une régulation continue de la conflictualité sociale par l'État, et d'un autre côté, la thèse d'une alternative radicale incarnée par un hypothétique, nécessaire et improbable « parti hors-État ».

The dissertation is a study of Althusser's contribution to social and political theory. Indeed, although chronologically close to us, Althusser is often forgotten, if not repressed. By examining published sources (including Althusser's posthumous works) and unpublished documents from the IMEC library, this study tries to re-establish the Althusserian theory of the state - or the basic premises of a theory -, and to assess a possible "Althusser-effect" on French philosophy from the 1970s on, in the works of his faithful disciples such as Balibar, and, to a certain extent, Poulantzas, and unfaithful ones like Rancière or Badiou, as well as in the philosophical output of his most "intimate" enemies, Foucault and Bourdieu). There appears to be an insuperable tension at the core of the Althusserian theory of Politics and State. His view on politics is tom between two separate - if not incompatible - modes of existence; on the one hand, the idea of a continuous regulation of social conflict by the State, and on the other hand, the idea of a radical alternative epitomized by a hypothetical, necessary and improbable "out-of-the-State Party".

Svarstant apie neįgaliuosius judančius vežimėliu remiamasi sovietinio palikimo problematika. Atkūrus Lietuvos nepriklausomybę, bandoma pritraukti kuo daugiau negalią turinčiųjų, tačiau fundamentali požiūrio sklaida išlieka iki šių dienų, neretai paremta gailesčiu ir aukos sindromu, susiformavęs dualizmas tarp sveiko ir nesveiko, gražaus ir negražaus, socialinio ir medicininio, kultūrinio ir antikultūrinio modelio, konstruoja socialinį suvokimą ir normatyvumą, kuris paremtas socialinio žinojimo apie neįgaliuosius judančius vežimėliu. Šiame darbe siekiama išanalizuoti judėjimo negalią turinčių kultūrinį lauką dalyvaujant Monciškių stovykloje, kuri apibrėžta laiko ir vietos, labiau siejama kultūriniu lauku, nei su negalios gyvenamuoju pasauliu ir išgyvenimais. Atvejo studija leido geriau pažinti tyrinėjamos problemos ypatumus. Darbe aprašomas kultūrinis laukas: Lietuvos paraplegikų asociacijos atsiradimo ištakos, veikla, žargonas, ritualai, vežimėlio pasirinkimas, kaip saviraiškos priemonė, geografine aplinka. Considering the general situation of wheelchair-moving people, the Soviet worldview legacy plays a magnificent role. Since the independence of Lithuania Republic was established, there have been constant efforts to incorporate disable people to various social activities, but fundamental attitude dissemination is still remaining, mostly associated with sympathy or victim syndrome, just like the dualism principles between healthy and unhealthy, beautiful and unbeautiful, social and medical, cultural and anti-cultural models. Altogether it constructs social comprehension and normativity built on stereotypical social knowledge of wheelchair-moving people with disability. This work is an attempt to analyse the cultural field of people with movement disabilities by attending the Monciskes camp, which is stable in terms of schedule and area and thus gets closer to a cultural field rather than disability-based livelihood and experience. Vor dem Hintergrund globaler Urbanisierungstendenzen wird die Bedeutung einer nachhaltigen Gestaltung städtischen (Lebens-) Raums ersichtlich. Im Sinne einer zukunftsfähigen Stadtentwicklung, die auf die Lebenschancen kommender Generationen bedacht ist, nehmen urbane Gemeinschaftsgärten, auch in der von den Vereinten Nationen (UN) proklamierten Lokalen Agenda 21 (LA 21), eine zentrale Rolle ein. Zugleich beschränken sich derartige Potentiale nicht auf Regionen des Globalen Nordens. Sie sind in einer kontextspezifischen Betrachtung auch für den Globalen Süden relevant. Allgemein werden urbane Gemeinschaftsgärten in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur als offene Sphären sozialer Inklusion betrachtet. Doch zentrale Erkenntnisse dieser Forschung, die auf einer Analyse nach Pierre Bourdieus Konzept des Habitus (1982) beruht, widersprechen dieser Auffassung und beschreiben eine klassenspezifische Selektivität des Zugangs zu derartigen Initiativen. So sind im Rahmen dieser Studie vier unterschiedliche Projekte, die jeweils verschiedenen Gartenformen zuzurechnen sind, dargestellt worden. Diese wurden in Hinblick auf wesentliche Aspekte sozialer Zugänglichkeit analysiert. Die Konzeption der Forschung nach einem theoretischen Sampling orientierte sich an zentralen Prinzipien der Grounded Theory und zielte darauf ab die vielfältigen Formen urbaner Gartenpraktiken darzustellen.

Facing global trends of urbanization, the importance of a sustainable design of urban (living) spaces becomes apparent. Aiming at a sustainable urban development, which is concerned with the lives and chances of future generations, urban community gardens also play a central role in the Local Agenda 21 (LA 21) proclaimed by the United Nations (UN). At the same time, such potentials are not limited to regions of the Global North. In a context-specific analysis, they are also relevant for the Global South. In the scientific literature, urban community gardens are mostly perceived as open spheres of social inclusion. However, central findings of this research, which is routed in an analysis based on Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus (1982), contradict this view and describe a class-specific selectivity of access to such initiatives. In this study, four different projects, each of which can be assigned to different garden types, were presented. These were analysed with regard to central aspects of social accessibility. The concept of research, consisting a theoretical sampling, was based upon central principles of grounded theory, aiming to illustrate the diverse forms of urban gardening practices.

This research utilized Statistics Canada’s Youth in Transition Survey (YITS), a nationally representative longitudinal study that collected data from approximately 26,000 15-year old youth in 2000, as well as from their parents and schools, with follow-up studies in 2002 and 2004. This study used both Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and status attainment theory to help explain both the micro- and macro-level processes involved in the perpetuation of educational inequality using young people’s educational aspirations as the nexus for linking these theoretical approaches. This study showed that educational aspirations at age 15 and educational participation by age 19 systematically vary between groups of youth who come from more or less advantaged backgrounds. Educational aspirations have a strong impact on educational participation. Educational aspirations and grade 12 marks have the strongest direct effect on educational participation. Using path analysis, we find that the sum of the direct and indirect effects of socio-economic, individual demographic and geographic factors, along with parents’ aspirations exceeds the independent effect exerted by both educational aspirations and grade 12 marks. Finally, while school type and quality affect a number of relationships between predictor variables and educational participation at age 19, the role of educational aspirations is not affected by either school quality or type. In conclusion, this research found that yes, educational aspirations do matter. However, despite substantial changes in Canada’s social structure, economy, labour market, and education systems in the past decades, they continue to be shaped and operate within the larger constellation of other socio-economic, individual demographic, geographical, and educational factors. Thus, while elevating educational aspirations alone is not enough to ensure that youth make successful post-secondary transitions, policies and programs that that inform young people and their parents about the variety of post-secondary options and what is required to be successful in them would help make educational aspirations a more meaningful mechanism for future educational success.

This study presents a map of the academic research production developed between 1987 and 2006 in order to analyze the constitution of the academic dance field in Brazil. Is used as reference the concepts of field and social space proposed by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Its presupposed that those should be comprehended in their theory system and associated to the phenomenon observed. So far, the academic research in dance in Brazil has been compiled, using the Banco de Teses e Dissertações da Capes, and the search for the word dance in titles, abstracts and key-words as operational mechanism. The results has been selected, examined in an analytical way, and discussed considering political-epistemological implications. The academic practices are the focus, so the concept of artistic field is not used, even discussing the relation between artistic and academic capital. Its concluded that the academic dance field is in process of constitution. The research production has been growing considerably in the last years and is characterized as geopolitical disperse, with concentration focus. It is considered epistemological diversified, presenting local authorities and certain tendency to eugenic. It is indicated that this process would be accelerated with the creation of structures that could promote environments of cooperation and dispute, as academic encounters, magazines and periodics, stimulating the agents specialization, the authorities definition and the establishment of the products specificities. It is believed that those mechanisms would effectuate the dynamics of circulation, consume and continuity of the academic knowledge production in dance, contributing for the process of consolidation and autonomy of the field.

This research is about the making of a selection of stories that have emanated from and/or evolved in relation to, the city of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. In the past thirty years Newcastle’s cultural and community identity has undergone some transformation as the social fabric of the town, its cultural geography, and its natural terrain have each responded to changes that de-industrialisation has bestowed on the area. Yet, as this body of work demonstrates, predominant ‘traditional’ city meanings prevail and continue to be embedded in creative projects affiliated with the place. It is the contention of this research that to come to an understanding of the representation of local cultural identity discourses, specifically through mediated inter-texts such as newspaper articles and reviews, theatrical plays, and mainstream films, that have resonant meaning potential for widespread ‘audiences’, the practices involved in producing the texts, and the socio-cultural contexts of their creation should be considered. Therefore a set of sociological concerns which address some of the power relationships, communication exchanges and ‘naturalized’ activities involved in constructing particular ‘Newcastle’ narratives have been appropriated for this study. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus (1984, 1992, 1993a, 1996) has provided a conceptual framework for illuminating how and why certain textual material may be generated initially in reaction to socio-cultural conditionings, plus, it has enabled the researcher to deconstruct some of the processes included in the development, progression and dissemination of a selection of texts featuring Newcastle according to professional and non-professional systems of ‘authorship’. The researcher’s application of habitus to the analysis of selected plays and films made throughout the 1990s has helped to explain why certain texts may be considered to epitomize the region and its residents, and also accounts for their ongoing communicative currency as performance or pedagogic resources that continue to circulate perceptions of the city.
