▼ A computer
network is considered forensically ready, when crucial evidence for a forensic investigation is proactively collected and easily available. While the benefits of a forensically ready
network are well understood, the exact information required to be collected to achieve forensic readiness is largely unknown. This thesis focuses on identifying and locating the information that is essential for successful forensic investigations in an IPv6
network. Without the knowledge of what information should be retained, the approach to achieving forensic readiness is likely to be unstructured and crucial information for an investigation might be missed.
This study conducted an empirical investigation to identify and extract forensic information from
network protocol standards and related literature. Malicious and genuine
network scenarios were run and retraced in a test bed to elicit the information that is significant for a forensic investigation. The
network scenarios were grouped by
network layer and the layers were processed
bottom-
up to resolve dependencies of the higher layers on the lower layers. A subset of
network scenarios was exclusively used to ascertain the effectiveness of the identified information (hold-out approach).
This thesis identifies the information in an IPv6
network that is relevant for a successful forensic investigation. Further, the thesis also proposes an optimisation phase as an extension of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) forensic life-cycle. This phase allows to improve the forensic readiness further through the identification of missing information after conducting a forensic investigation in the
network. Finally, design and deployment strategies for implementing a forensically ready
network are outlined and recommendations are made for mastering key issues related to forensic readiness.

▼ The changed conditions in the Dutch housing market have made it difficult for municipalities to decide what type of strategy is suitable to apply. This thesis focuses on the decision for a top-down (TD) or bottom-up and network oriented (BN) strategy. There seems to be a trend in Dutch housing away from TD strategies and towards more BN strategies. However, there are still municipalities which apply TD strategies. This has raised the main question in this research: Why do some Dutch municipality apply a top-down strategy while others apply a bottom-up and network oriented strategy to develop dwellings? The mechanisms behind the decision of a Dutch municipality to apply a TD or BN strategy in Dutch housing have been analysed by using theoretical concepts of network theory and urban governance, by conducting an analysis of the conditions in the Dutch housing system, an analysis of the development of strategies and the accompanied conditions and through three case studies. The main conclusion is that the more a municipality is operating in a network of interdependencies, the more a BN strategy is required. The presence of a network of interdependencies can be determined by analysing the presence of the variety, closedness, interdependency and dynamics in the network of parties. The more these four network conditions are present, the more one operates in a network of interdependencies.

▼ All semiconductor devices incorporate metallic

network within the
device. The interconnects are fabricated by electroplating copper
from electrolytes containing special additives, enabling
bottom-
up
fill of the vias and trenches. The study herein focuses on
identifying new additives
screening techniques and characterizing
the associated process parameters through systematic experimental
investigation and analytical modeling.A new improved test for
characterizing the efficacy of the additives system has been
developed and validated as a replacement for the classical
injection technique. Results of the test have been implemented in a
quantitative model indicating the expected gap-fill in wafer
plating of small features.Additionally, a computer-based model of
the additives co-injection test has been developed. This model
accounts for the flow field external to the features and
characterizes the actual wafer plating process more precisely than
previous models. Fitting experimental data to the model provides
more accurate estimates of process parameters, including additive
adsorption rates, than heretofore possible. Several process
parameters were characterized. Temperature was found to affect
additives (polyethylene glycol [PEG] serving as a suppressor and
bis(3-sulfopropyl) disulfide [SPS] serving as anti-suppressor)
activity. An optimal process temperature of ~30 °C was identified,
where the SPS depolarized electrode reverts to pure copper plating
kinetics and maximal polarization is achieved. The effects of pH,
in the range 0.5-2, on the deposition kinetics were found to be
minor; however, corresponding effects on seed stability were
substantial, with improved seed stability at the higher pH.
Substituting chloride with bromide provided slight improvement in
the deposition kinetics. With bromide, displacement of the
suppressor by the anti-suppressor was slow compared to displacement
in the presence of chloride, possibly indicating stronger binding
of the suppressor to the copper substrate. The effect of PEG
molecular weight was studied. PEG 4000 was found to provide optimal
adsorption and displacement rates. Commercially available compounds
were tested for suppression capability. Pluronic L31 exhibited the
largest polarization (220 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2)
among the tested additives.

Dense nanostructured materials based on the metastable Ni- P alloy were prepared by "bottom- up" strategy. This synthesis pathway is the combination of two steps. The first is to prepare the powder by soft chemistry (reduction in polyol medium modified by the addition of hypophosphite a strong reducing agent). The nanoparticles produced have spherical morphology and size ranging from 39 to 220 nm. These powders are metastable solid solutions Ni- P. The second step is to consolidate these powders by SPS process; it results in dense nanostructured material consisting of polygonal grains of nickel (size ranging from 254 to 650 nm) along with spherical nanoparticles Ni3P located at triple junction points and grain boundaries. These nanoparticles of size no greater than 250 nm are formed by a diffusion mechanism through the phosphorous nickel grains. The as-obtained dense materials have magnetic characteristics of a soft ferromagnetism (low coercivity) but a good saturation magnetization close to that of bulk nickel. These materials also exhibit very interesting mechanical properties depending on the grain size. When the grain size is small, the materials exhibit mechanical strength and high elastic limit accompanied by low ductility. An increase in grain size leads to inverse changes in line with the Hall-Petch law.

▼ Safety
network screening is used to identify roadway locations (e.g., intersections and roadway segments) for potential safety improvements. Currently, one of the most commonly used
network screening methods in practice is the safety performance function (SPF) based method that uses traffic volume data as an essential input for the
screening process. However, the lack of traffic volume data for target roadway locations restricts the applicability of SPF-based
network screening methods. The primary objective of this study is to screen Saskatoon’s roadway networks using two existing
network screening methods (i.e., the binomial test and the beta-binomial (BB) test) that do not require traffic volume as an input.
Previous studies have applied the binomial test and/or the BB test without explicitly defining the particular circumstances that indicate which test is preferable. This study introduced a formal statistical test known as the overdispersion test (i.e., “C(α) Test”) to determine which
network screening method – the binomial test or the BB test – should be used to screen a given study dataset.
The “C(α) Test” was applied to a total of 36 study collision datasets, including 26 segment collision datasets, and 10 intersection collision datasets. (“C (α) Test” results showed that 15 of 26 (58%) segment collision datasets, and all of 10 intersection collision datasets contained statistically significant overdispersion at the 95% confidence level (P-value < 0.05). The BB test was selected as an appropriate
network screening method for 15 segment collision datasets and 10 intersection collision datasets. The remaining 11 segment collision datasets that did not contain statistically significant overdispersion (P-value ≥ 0.05) were screened using the binomial test.
The
network screening results for each study location (i.e., a segment or an intersection) in all 36 study datasets were presented in terms of the estimated probability obtained from either the binomial test or the BB test. The estimated probability values were used as a ranking measure to select the top 10 or top 30 riskiest locations for both roadway segments and intersections.
The
network screening results (estimated probability) for each study segment or intersection in all 36 study collision datasets were then visually displayed in a set of 36 collision maps that were developed using ArcGIS. The developed GIS-based collision maps are expected to help engineers in the City of Saskatoon to efficiently select potential locations for deploying specific safety countermeasures that will result in the reduction of a certain configuration of collisions at the screened locations.
As a final component of this thesis, a diagnosis study was performed to identify the most dominant collision configurations at the top 30 riskiest signalized intersections (among a total of 154 signalized intersections) in Saskatoon. This study quantitatively compared the performance of two existing collision diagnosis methods (i.e., descriptive data analysis and BB test), and the…

▼ The intelligent handling of waste is a pressing issue today. Up until the 19th century it had been however an integral part of societies especially when it comes to the waste generated by construction and demolition (Bahamon and Sanjines, 2010). After industrial revolution (1750-1850) which opened the gates of mass production and mass consumption followed and supported by two major forces of capitalism and the dramatic increase in world population, the generation of waste accelerated correspondingly and in a global scale.
The mass extraction of natural resources on one hand (limited amount of natural resources), and the problems caused by waste landfilling and incineration such as pollution and diseases on the other hand, made us stop this linear extraction-to-waste trend and recognize recycling as a solution. Recycling chiefly addresses a sustainable approach to reduce the negative effects of waste and at the same time involves processing used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials (Eco Cloud), however through recycling not only some energy has to be consumed to make this process run but also some portion of pollution would be generated as a side effect. What is more is that up until today recycling has been neither in many cases economically profitable nor has it been possible to recycle all the amount of waste. For instance In US- as the most consuming society on the planet Earth- only 34% of the municipal solid waste can be recycled and the rest ends up in either landfills or incinerators (EPA,2010).
This project is to mainly focus on the definition of a rather comprehensive network (Network of Reuse) which sits right before recycling through which as much as possible of the total amount of waste could be directly absorbed back into the society (with minor changes in some cases) in different scales, the resultants of which would be claimed not to be only less energy consumption and less pollution caused through processing waste (as in recycling) but also avoiding a considerable amount of unrecycled materials from ending up in landfills and incineration. In fact the assumed network-which is simulated by the smart grid model- could be said to be a complementary section added to the existing trend today and is on no account against recycling. Like any other network, the network of reuse is based upon strategies, tools, and policies. The rhizomic growing structure of this network-that is in contrast to the tree structure of recycling- suggests a bottom up movement in handling waste and empowering people while the proposed time-line strategy is assumed to be moving from entertainment towards a coherent business network. In fact the project itself suggests the necessity of more bottom up structures to happen in our future planning. The entire project is highly founded upon research and could be applied in a variety of actual designs and concrete cases. Therefore, in this project no specific site is being addressed directly but the…

▼ This graduation project offers an alternative to the tradition in top-down planning in the Netherlands. The test-case for this strategy is the transformation of former industry area ‘Schieoevers’ in Delft. Both a spatial framework and a policy framework are created to support bottom up development of this project location. The spatial framework is an urban design of the main networks and the policy framework are the rules for developing an area enclosed by this network. The bottom up development is a form of self-organization in which a group of private and public initiatives can develop an area (unit) of the project location. The ‘Schieoevers’ will be developed into a pedestrian-based neighbourhood with a mix of living and working on a small scale. The rules for self-organization should guide the development in this desired direction. To test the bottom up strategy for densification three games where organized to simulate the self-organization process.

▼ Learning is an inherently closed-loop process that involves the interaction between an intelligent agent and its environment. In the human brain, we assert that the basis for learning is in its ability to represent external stimuli symbolically in an associative memory. Historically, statistical methods such as the hidden Markov model have been used in order to provide the internal symbolic representation to external signals from the environment. This work approaches similar themes by investigating the function of the neocortex, with the ultimate goal of understanding how mental states might arise from spiking activity. Cortical modeling has traditionally focused on the mechanisms and behaviors at the cellular level. However, developments with respect to group or population level phenomena indicate that a shift in focus is necessary to understand how learning and representation of stimuli might occur in the brain. We present a Simulation Tool for Asynchronous Cortical Streams (STACS) for studying spiking neural networks exhibiting adaptation in a closed-loop system.

▼ In Egypt, the school educational system has been suffering a deteriorating quality over the last few decades. Since the revolution that took place in Egypt in 2011, political tensions and conflicts have consumed so much energy and time, making it hard for Egyptians to focus on development. Therefore, through this doctoral study that follows an action based methodology, I aim to contribute to the current efforts to improve the Egyptian educational system. In this study, I introduced an intervention that draws upon the principles of school improvement, reform strategies and non-positional teacher leadership. This is done through adopting and adapting the ‘teacher-led development work’ (TLDW) approach. In this study, a group of 50 teachers from four different Egyptian schools took part in the programme for one academic year. Through this programme I supported them to lead innovations in their classrooms and schools as a whole. Each teacher/participant was expected to initiate and lead a development project that improves teaching and learning in their schools, and other teachers could benefit from as well. Data was collected throughout the academic year to continuously monitor and adapt the programme, and to explore what the programme made possible and the conditions that made it possible. The programme usefully supported teachers in taking action that had a positive impact on the students, teachers and school as a whole. However, the most significant impact observed was on the participating teachers themselves: their professionality, self-confidence and self-efficacy that underpinned growth in their own skills and pedagogic repertoires. There were a set of conditions that were required for this programme to have an impact. Practitioners and policy makers interested in educational reform through teachers could benefit from considering these factors in their own development.

▼ The emergence of metamaterials has expanded the understanding of materials and their associated functionalities beyond the scope of naturally occurring substances. By properly engineering the electric and magnetic resonances of meta-atoms, which have a length scale smaller than the incident wavelength, novel artificial materials can be constructed. This research investigates novel optical metamaterials that are designed and fabricated with optimized subwavelength nanostructures and properly chosen constituent materials to meet user-specified criteria. Both top-down and
bottom-
up integration techniques were developed to explore the palette of materials and nanostructures that can be accessed. First, precisely defined subwavelength nanostructures fabricated using conventional top-down techniques were exploited to synthesize a metamaterial absorber, metamaterial waveplates, and a dielectric magnetic mirror. A single-layer metal nanostructure array that had been optimized by genetic algorithm was demonstrated to achieve near-ideal absorptivity from 1.77 μm to 4.86 μm and over incidence angles
up to 45. The performance of the fabricated absorber was verified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. A half-wave plate and a quarter-wave plate that exhibit polarization conversion ratios and reflectivity greater than 92% from 640 nm to 1290 nm with incident angles
up to 40 were investigated. A Mie resonance-based amorphous silicon nanoresonator array was designed, resulting in a lossless magnetic mirror at 1 m with near unity reflectivity and zero reflection phase. The fabricated waveplates and magnetic mirror were characterized with custom-built measurement setups, and the results show excellent agreement with the design targets. Secondly, an alternative hybrid top-down and
bottom-
up integrated technique was developed to increase the range of materials and nanostructures beyond those available when using conventional top-down techniques and to synthesize optical metamaterials with reconfigurable structures/functionalities. A directed self-assembly strategy was investigated using an applied electric field to deterministically assemble pre-synthesized nanoparticles into predefined locations and to modulate the patterned structures. Based on this approach, reconfigurable two-dimensional ordered gold nanowire lattices with AC frequency-dependent lattice spacing were demonstrated. Electric field simulations and electric force calculations were performed to understand the formation of the lattices. Finally, a simplified electrical equivalent resistor and capacitor (RC) model was developed to explain the observed frequency dependent periodicity change.

▼ The exceptional material properties of bulk diamond like high stiffness, high thermal conductivity, wide optical transparency, chemical inertness and bio-compatibility make it the material of choice in many high-end applications. Most present-day diamond micro-devices are fabricated by costly and time-consuming top-down methods, such as focussed ion beam milling or reactive ion etching. Hence, bottom-up methods that incorporate selective seeding and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) to produce micro-patterned poly-crystalline diamond are of interest. The present work introduces two novel methods for the bottom-up synthesis of nanocrystalline diamond micro-structures. The first method is based on the precise dispensing of nanodiamond dispersions from a hollow AFM cantilever and is used to manufacture freestanding diamond micro-resonators which are analysed on their frequency response. The second method incorporates maskless lithography to create stencils for selective seeding and enables patterned diamond growth on the single digit micrometer scale. A future step of growing such micro-structures in electrically conductive diamond could open up a vast new range up applications.

▼ The overall aim of this thesis is to, through a case study of a local disaster organization, study the prerequisites for building functional Hastily Formed Networks in disasters and also how HFN:s can be linked to a proactive disaster organization. The study looks upon HFN:s from the organizational, cognitive aspects of communication – not the network/information technology – and focus on the issue of local empowerment. To set the theoretical framework the thesis makes use of Peter Senge's model on learning organization, Karl Weicks organizational and communication theory of microlevels in systems, commitment and enactment. The method is a case study with interviews and field observation of a proactive disaster organization in Indonesia, in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta on Java. The results shows that Yogyakarta is actively working with a model to take advantage of the experience from earlier catastrophes, spread the learnings to other, integrate community in the learning and trying to build local empowerment including a bottom-up approach. In the interviews topics raised as important to create a good collaboration in a HFN are: 1) Provide local leaders with professional support and coordination based on a common vision. 2) Establishing local empowerment and common visions. 3) Development of the organization and individuals. 4) The need for formal and informal structures and communication. 5) Need for local mandate for coordination and increased competence in local management. The themes all deal with challenges for HFN:s, presented in earlier research, and link strongly to Senge’s theoretical model for learning organization, trying to build trust and also micro committment for uncertain periods. This contributes to the capacity to be prepared for the unprepared.

The synthesis of graphene via bottom-up approach is a hot topic of research that aims to control the electronic and optical properties of this material by the fabrication of atomically precised nanostructures. Moreover, the control of dopant in graphene is of great interest to modulate the properties of the material. In this context, the contribution of porphyrins with a controlled content of nitrogen is attractive in this context. Because of structural similarities with graphene quantum dots (GQDs), π-extented porphyrins can be regarded as nitrogen-doped GQD with promising NIR properties. Porphyrins are convenient building blocks for the synthesis on surface of nanoarchitectures of graphene called nitrogen-doped Graphene Nanoribbons (GNRs) and Graphene NanoMeshes (GNMs). This thesis aims to develop the synthesis of symmetrical and robust porphyrins with anthracenes and to use them as precursors for the fabrication of nanostructures. The first part of this thesis is dedicated to the organic synthesis of variety of anthracenylporphyrins and the study of their assemblies on surface in a chamber of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope. The second part is dedicated to the study of formation of π-extended porphyrins via a method of flash pyrolysis able to thermally activate dehydrogenative coupling reactions…

This PhD thesis addresses two issues: Firstly, the assessment of Demand Side Management (DSM) opportunity of gas and electricity technologies in dwellings, and secondly, the integration of their valuations in infrastructure planning schemes. This work originaites from a context of the growth of electricity peaks (which increased risk of system failure) and the natural gas consumption decrease which leads to an under-utilization of the gas distribution network. This manuscript focuses on the integration of gas technologies as DSM solution to contribute to the planning of electricity grid. Indeed, relieving the electricity consumption during constrained periods by diffusing micro-cogeneration or hybrid boiler, is an actual alternative to network reinforcement solutions. To quantify the load shedding capacity, we are interested in the marginal impact of demand systems on the amount of Energy Not Supplied potential. Estimating systems' impacts on heating demand is a prerequisite…

Future trend of electricity demand is a key point for sizing both the electricity network and the power plants. In order to forecast future electricity demand, current models mostly use statistical approaches based on past demand measurements and on demographic and economic trends. Because of current context of energy transition which comes along with important changes, future electricity demand is not expected to be similar to past trends. Modeling these changes requires a bottom-up modeling of each contributor to electricity demand. This kind of model is challenging because of the large number of input data required. At the same time, data and information are more and more available. Such availability can be considered both as an asset for modeling and as an important issue because of data heterogeneity. In this context, this dissertation offers an approach to build a bottom-up load curve simulator which enables to simulate prospective scenarii at the scale of France country. Firstly, an assessment, classification, and matching of the large databases explaining the electricity demand have been performed. Then, the electricity demand model has been presented. It has been validated and calibrated on Enedis’ large volumes of…

bottom-
up.
do material vítreo.

▼ This dissertation examines the labor law enforcement and compliance in contemporary China's workplaces. In explaining an increasing variation in compliance and employment relations practices across factories and regions, this dissertation proposes a -
bottom-
up[DOUBLE VERTICAL LINE] enforcement model, based on an extensive field research. The emerging -
bottom-
up[DOUBLE VERTICAL LINE] model emphasizes the increasingly important role of two new actors: 1) workers themselves, specifically the second-generation workers, and 2) a wide variety of labor-related social intermediaries including the media, labor lawyers, various social organizations, HR/ labor professionals and online social networks. This dissertation argues that these actors increase employer concerns and uncertainty directly and indirectly, thereby motivating employers to respond to potential legal risk in the workplace either by more compliance with labor laws or by adoption of more sophisticated employment relations practices. It is emphasized that this emerging -
bottom-
up[DOUBLE VERTICAL LINE] enforcement remains within the state's guidelines, but contentious and consequential to employers. This study deserves close attention, given the situation that existing explanations, be it stateoriented approach or non-state approach, are increasingly considered to be questionable. Practically speaking, this study advances ongoing discussion regarding labor regulations, i.e., how to enhance compliance, and is particularly relevant to many developing economies, which suffer from state incapacity and/ or unwillingness to enforce labor laws.

▼ Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a debilitating dementia with complex pathophysiological alterations including modifications to endogenous cysteine. S-nitrosylation (SNO) is a well-studied post translational modification (PTM) in the context of AD while S-glutathionylation (PSSG) remains less studied. Excess reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) directly or indirectly generate SNO and PSSG. SNO is dysregulated in AD and plays a pervasive role in processes such as protein function, cell signaling, metabolism, and apoptosis. Despite some studies into the role of SNO in AD, multiple identified SNO proteins lack deep investigation and SNO modifications outside of brain tissues are limited, leaving the full role of SNO in AD to be elucidated. PSSG homeostasis is perturbed in AD and may affect a myriad of cellular processes. Here we overview the role of nitric oxide (NO∙) in AD, discuss proteomic methodologies to investigate SNO and PSSG, and review SNO and PSSG in AD. A more thorough understanding of SNO, PSSG, and other cysteinyl PTMs in AD will be helpful for the development of novel therapeutics against neurodegenerative diseases.

▼ This thesis investigates two different aspects of how an observer experiences a natural image: (i) where we look, namely, where attention is guided, and (ii) what we like, i.e., whether or not the image is aesthetically pleasing. These two experiences are the subjects of increasing research efforts in computer vision.
Both visual attention and visual aesthetics can be modeled as a consequence of multiple interacting mechanisms, some
bottom-
up or involuntary, and others top-down or task-driven. In this work we focus on a
bottom-
up perspective, using low-level visual mechanisms and features, as it is here that the links between aesthetics and attention may be more obvious and/or easily studied.
In Part 1 of the thesis, we hypothesize that salient and non-salient image regions can be estimated to be the regions which are enhanced or assimilated in standard low-level color image representations. We prove this hypothesis by adapting a low-level model of color perception into a saliency estimation model. This model shares the three main steps found in many successful models for predicting attention in a scene: convolution with a set of filters, a center-surround mechanism and spatial pooling to construct a saliency map. For such models, integrating spatial information and justifying the choice of various parameter values remain open problems. Our saliency model inherits a principled selection of parameters as well as an innate spatial pooling mechanism from the perception model on which it is based. This pooling mechanism has been fitted using psychophysical data acquired in color-luminance setting experiments. The proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art at the task of predicting eye-fixations from two datasets. After demonstrating the effectiveness of our basic saliency model, we introduce an improved image representation. With this improved image representation, the performance of our saliency model in predicting eye-fixations increases for both datasets.
In Part 2 of the thesis, we investigate the problem of aesthetic visual analysis. Because image aesthetics is complex and subjective, existing datasets, which have few images and few annotations, have significant limitations. To address these limitations, we introduced a new large-scale database for conducting Aesthetic Visual Analysis, which we call AVA. AVA contains more than 250,000 images, along with a rich variety of annotations. We investigate how the wealth of data in AVA can be used to tackle the challenge of understanding and assessing visual aesthetics by looking into several problems relevant for aesthetic analysis. We demonstrate that by leveraging the data in AVA, and using generic low-level features such as SIFT and color histograms, we can exceed state-of-the-art performance in aesthetic quality prediction tasks.
Finally, we entertain the hypothesis that low-level visual information in our saliency model can also be used to predict visual aesthetics by capturing local image characteristics such as feature contrast, grouping and isolation,…

▼ Our group has developed different nanomachines over the years, while some of them are designed to perform in solution phase, a group of molecules termed nanocars were designed to specifically operate on solid surfaces. In this work, wheels, designed to yield better surface and molecule interaction for our studies is synthesized. In the past we have used mainly C60 fullerene wheels for our nanocars molecules. But after we decided to integrate a light activated motor into the nanocars, the fullerene wheels had to be phased out since the fullerene is known to quench the light energy used to actuate the motor. Our group then primarily utilized the p-carborane wheel as it does not show the same quenching effect with the motors. To improve the mobility and diffusion constant of the nanocars, a new generation of wheels was developed, featuring adamantane. A four-wheeled and a three-wheeled fluorescent nanocar was synthesized and monitored, showing enhanced performance to the p-carborane wheeled analogue, which we attribute to the lower surface/wheel interactions. The adamantane wheels were then used to synthesize two nanocars with both a fluorescent 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) core and a MHz frequency light-activated unidirectional rotary motor, one molecule that is angular and expected to operate in circles and one that is straight and expected to primarily move in a single direction. Preliminary experiments have been conducted and show promising results. While the BODIPY core does quench some of the energy that was supposed to be directed to the motor, the motor still accelerates the nanocar to increase the diffusion constant. The same principle was used to synthesize a molecule with BODIPY core and motor (but without wheels) that could operate in solution. Finally, a two-wheeled nanocar was synthesized with a water soluble extension that could fit into cyclodextrin (CD) cavities and serve as wheels. This nanocar is expected to have very high surface interaction and could be used as to modify surface interactions and the resulting mobility and diffusion constants of nanocars on surfaces.

▼ Due to a merger of the eight villages and cities around and including Antwerp in the early 80’s into a unified Antwerp, the existing governmental facilities became the new districts district houses. This merger changed the way the district council and staff is organised dramatically. A new approach for the way a district house is organised should be envisioned within Deurnes fragmented context. The location is located on a junction between Hugh apartment towers, the historical center of Deurne and the old church and vicar. A small urban intervention creates a new square on one of Deurnes primary axis, the Turnhoutsebaan. This road is connecting Deurne physically and visually with Antwerp, creating a symbolic gesture towards the district house and its city.

▼ Office vacancy is an ever dominant problem in the Netherlands and abroad. While there are still a lot of issues unresolved, we might be overwhelmed with ideas, concepts and suggestions on how to tackle this vacancy. This graduation project tried to give a different perspective on this vacancy by introducing the concept of OPEN BUILDING and link this phenomenon with the mid-income housing shortage situation. The project will stress the problem with a design strategy in steps. In the first initiative part, the architect will work together with the developer or housing company to assess the transformation possibility to find a matching target vacant office building. The target building’s location characteristics and physical building characteristics will be assessed.

▼ The housing process in dense metropolitan environments experiences difficulties to adapt to the comprehensive needs and wants of the modern household. As a consequence of the increasing flexibility in daily-life, there is a growing diversity in the shape of households and their living patterns. In addition, digital developments enable and create more specific requirements among users for the products they purchase. Knowing the impact that these rapid developments have on consumerism, it is inevitable that users will create stronger preferences for their living environment as well. These tendencies in our society must be translated to its housing. To adapt to such diverse demands would be a difficult challenge for the housing market. Current processes make it labour-intensive and therefore a costly and unsustainable matter. It is of importance that both our existing and future housing is able to respond to these demands in an adaptive and sustainable manner. A possible solution, responding to the diverse demand, would be to involve the consumers themselves in the development of their dwelling. When involved, consumers can directly shape the dwelling to their needs themselves; customisation. However, current practices make this an undoable matter. The over-complexity in (pre)construction processes and conservative mind-sets of real-estate developers and construction firms hinder any level of participation with the consumer. There is a need for smart processes and designs to involve the user in the realisation of the customised urban dwelling.

This study aims at investigating how authors of Portuguese for foreigners textbooks work with the reading ability in relation to the use of the bottom-up strategies. In order to verify how the relation between reading ability and linguistic competence works, I have decided to analyze the reading sections of four Portuguese for foreigners textbooks that are been used nowadays and which contains the teachers book. First of all and within this context, the methodology of data analysis was based on Leontievs version of Activity Theory (1977), for the purpose of identifying what actions are developed by the student during the activity of learning Portuguese and checking whether these actions may become operations. Secondly, it was found theoretical support in Richters Holistic Model (2004, 2005) as a way to describe the reading tasks of those textbooks and elaborate a model of a standard class. This model which was based on an interactive reading teaching and applied to a complex spiral vision, was compared to the corpus of this study, to verify what material would be closer to the ideal one for internalization of specific formal items. The study theoretical support was centered in the following aspects: textbook as a genre; Vygotskys social-interactionist teaching, emphasizing key-concepts as…

▼ This study will examine the prospects of the local implementation and the professional growth stories of four teacher participants, two from Brazil and two from Portugal. It will describe and clarify the role and importance of self-leadership and motivation as well as educational leadership when implementing educational innovations in a somewhat traditional setting going through a paradigm shift. Central phenomena studied is the paradigm change in education and teacher change agency.
All of the participants in this study took part in several and different Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) Global Education programmes during the past few years. The study will focus on the emerging theories that will rise from the analysed interview data with grounded theory approach, trying to set light to the leadership issues and professional growth stories that have made educational change in local contexts possible and the reasons behind it.
Study result shows that
bottom-
up leadership to action change in educational context worked in the cases studied. The study supported the idea that actual change happens at a grassroots level in real classrooms as long as the teachers are well prepared, motivated and continuous learners who are given the time and space to adapt and implement change actions in their learning communities.
Findings suggest that teachers act as change agents in their own educational context especially if they are surrounded by a numerous and motivated learning community and supported from the top down. Trust is one of the key elements for a successful implementation of educational innovation and new methodologies. This study supports the statement that in-service teacher trainings with a Finnish partner helped the process of change in educational context. Looking at your own education context with different and comparative lenses and being given sufficient time to do so, enabled the teachers to adapt and take advantage of the good practices of proven educational successes like Finland has.

▼ Introduction: Until recently, research on neurocognitive deficits in
schizophrenia has been focussing mainly on top down deficits and neglecting
bottom up processes. But recent studies showed
bottom up deficits in visual
and auditory processing in schizophrenia. This leads to the question if these
bottom up deficits interfere with the well known top down deficits. This
thesis focuses on
bottom up as well as top down processes in early visual
processing in schizophrenia and examines their interaction. Methods: Thirty-
three schizophrenic patients and 61 healthy controls were included in the
study. Early visual processing was examined by event-related potentials (ERP).
An electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded while performing the attention
network test (ANT). The N1 amplitude after presentation of cues was used as
surrogate parameter for
bottom up processes, and the N1 amplitude after
presentation of targets for top down processes. Linear regression slopes were
calculated for cue N1 as a function of stimulus saliency and for cue-locked
target N1 as a function of attentional load. sLORETA was used for cortical
source location of the recorded potentials. Results: As main result,
significant reductions of cue N1 as well as cue-locked target N1 were found in
schizophrenic patients. Furthermore the patients showed a significant
reduction in steepness of both N1 regression slopes relative to controls, with
a most pronounced reduction for target N1 with high attentional load. Source
analysis and comparison of cue N1 and target N1 sources showed a partial
overlap in the occipital lobe. A deficit in the right inferior parietal lobe
associated with the cue N1 as well as a deficit in the anterior cingulate
associated with the target N1 was found in schizophrenic patients. Discussion:
The study found a deficit in top down as well as in
bottom up processes in
early visual processing in schizophrenic patients. The partial overlap in the
source analysis indicates an interaction between these deficits in
schizophrenia, even though the statistical evidence with the correlation of
the regression slopes could not be obtained. Interestingly, in this study the
deficit of the cue N1 was strongly dependent on the size of the cues. This may
be an explanation why studies examining early visual processing in
schizophrenia yielded inconsistent results so far.

▼ Most children grow
up in an environment surrounded by different institutions, such as family, school, friends and community organizations, which are more or less connected. The local neighbourhood football club (VV Hoograven) in this research initiated a partnership with other local community organizations (elementary schools, social work, youth work, mosque, etc.). Together the volunteers and professionals (football coaches, youth- and community workers) of these organizations strongly believe in the added value of collaborating across institutional and organizational boundaries and aim to connect the different worlds in which children grow
up. ‘If we don’t keep an eye on the youth, they will slip away from us’, is an often used statement by the participants in Hoograven. This reflects their idea for a more integrated approach towards youth development. The participants believe that enhancing partnership between local community organizations working with vulnerable youth will stimulate their development with possible spill-over effects on the whole community. The partnership in this research takes place in a krachtwijk, which according to central and local government reports show that social and economical problems (poverty, unemployment, antisocial behaviour of youth, crime etc.) of the inhabitants are relatively higher compared to inhabitants in other areas of the city (VROM, 2007; Gemeente Utrecht 2008; Nicis, 2008). This research aims to provide insights into the characteristics of interorganizational collaboration between professionals and volunteers of a neighborhood football club, elementary schools, youth- and community work and a local mosque. From a scientific point of view this research adds to our understanding on the processes and contents of
bottom-
up organizing and interorganizational collaboration. From a policy and practical point of view the findings of this research could be used for more successful community (sport-based) social policy interventions by (local) governments. A single case study research design is used to get an in-depth understanding on the processes and contents of interorganizational collaboration. An insider’s perspective is taken to describe the beliefs, perceptions and attitudes of practitioners on partnership working. A remarkable characteristic of interorganizational collaboration is the role of certain key figures (in Dutch: trekkers) and their personal view and commitment to partnership working for youth development. The partnership also featured an open attitude towards newcomers with new ideas on problem definitions and solutions. The partnership working in this case study lead to breaking institutional and organizational barriers. Their believe in the added value of partnership working for the children created a strong bond between the participants. However, the research also shows that working across organizational boundaries can lead to a mixture of organizational difficulties such as unifying a strong diversity of stakeholders and the constant call for visionary…
