▼ The bilayer tablet contains two layers of materials. However, such tablets have higher tendency to crack at the interface or even layer separation. Interfacial bonding strength (IBS) is the strength that bonds two layers at the interface. Understanding the mechanism of forming an adequate IBS is critical to the successful development of a bilayer tablet product. The first step is to establish a standard measuring method for obtaining accurate IBS. Both shear and tensile tests are commonly used to measure IBS, which shows a linear correlation. However, the shear test has a more complicated result due to complex stress application and tablet testing orientation, which is not an issue for the tensile test. Therefore, the tensile test is preferred for straightforward data interpretation because of uniform applied stress. Thus, the tensile strength becomes a standard method for measuring IBS. IBS of four layer combinations between microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and lactose 24AN (Lac), i.e., MCC/MCC, Lac/Lac, MCC/Lac and Lac/MCC (1st/2nd), were measured under various first layer (P1) and second layer compaction pressures (P2) to validate the hypothesis that IBS is controlled by bonding area (BA) and bonding strength (BS) interplay at the interface. BA is the contact area between first layer and second layer powders at the interface and BS is the strength interactions over the contact area. As a result, any factors that influence either BA or BS affect IBS. Moreover, differential radial expansion between layers also affects IBS. In this work, BA is assessed by surface waviness and tablet porosity, while BS is assessed by tablet strength at zero porosity. Lower P1 leads to higher porosity of the first layer and higher P2 generally leads to greater surface waviness at the interface, both leading to larger BA and, thus, higher IBS. However, higher P2 causes a larger difference in radial expansion when two layers are different materials, which weakens IBS. The materials in the two layers determine BS, which follows the descending order of MCC/MCC > MCC/Lac (Lac/MCC) > Lac/Lac. The trends in the effects of these factors on measured IBS support the hypothesis. Further, bilayer tablets with each layer containing the mixture of MCC and lactose in different ratios with/without hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) K15M are studied to understand the compositional effect on IBS under two P1s (20 and 100 MPa) and a fixed P2 of 200 MPa. The multi-component bilayer tablets make the trend of IBS more complicated as a function of MCC content. Still, IBS changes can be explained by the BA and BS interplay. The increase of MCC can increase BS but, at the same time, decrease BA. The addition of HPMC decreases BS for lower IBS. The interplay between BA and BS will determine IBS. Particle size is also an important factor to affect IBS. Two sizes of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and lactose anhydrate were prepared to study the effect of particle size on IBS of bilayer tablets. The effect of particle size on IBS is also influenced by…

▼ Adequate mechanical strength is a critical requirement to the successful development of a tablet product. Before tablet compression, powders are often engineered by various processes including wet granulation and surface coating, which may improve or adversely affect the powder tableting performance. Such effects, commonly, result from a change in either particle mechanical properties or particulate (size, shape) properties. In this work, tableting performance is interpreted based on the qualitative bonding-area and bonding-strength (BABS) model. The tabletability of the microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) granules deteriorates rapidly with increasing amount of granulating water and eventually leads to over-granulation at high water level. Granule surface smoothing, size enlargement, granule densification and shape rounding are the dominant factors leading to the tabletability reduction of plastic MCC. Incorporation of increasing amounts of brittle excipients, such as lactose or dibasic calcium phosphate reduces the rate of tabletability reduction by promoting more granule fragmentation, introducing more surface area available for bonding. When a sufficient amount of brittle excipients is used, the over-granulation phenomenon can be eliminated. Surface coating of incompressible MCC pellets with highly bonding polymer leads to sufficient surface deformation and adhesion to enable direct compression of the pellets into tablets of adequate mechanical strength. This improvement is enhanced by the presence of moisture, which plasticizes the polymer to allow the development of a larger bonding area between coated pellets. The relationship between mechanical properties and tableting behavior is systematically investigated in polymeric composites using celecoxib-polyvinylpyrrolidone vinyl acetate solid dispersions. Mechanical properties such as indentation hardness of the solid dispersions were measured using nanoindentation. Incorporation of celecoxib up to 60% by weight hardens the polymers, which reduces bonding area but increases bonding strength. On the other hand, moisture softens the solid dispersions and facilitates deformation under pressure to improve tablet mechanical strength. In summary, insights into the deteriorated tabletability of wet granulated powders have been developed and strategies for improving tabletability have been demonstrated. Also, the relationship between particle mechanical properties and tableting performance has been examined using solid dispersions. The BABS model has been further developed to enable its widespread application in interpreting complex tableting behavior.

Background: In order to improve the clinical performance of RMGIC 3M ESPE and GC America introduced paste/paste resin-modified glass ionomer cements, Ketac™ Nano and Fuji Filling™ LC, respectively. Both companies developed non-rinse substrate conditioners (i.e., Ketac Nano Primer-3M ESPE and GC Self-Conditioner-GC America) that should be used with these new materials instead of the conventional polyacrylic acid. It has been also advised by both manufacturer’s to use this novel substrate conditioner with the previously marketed RMGICs. Objective: to investigate whether the use of novel non-rinse conditioners (i.e., Ketac Nano Primer 3M ESPE and GC Self Conditioner GC America) as substrate pre-treatment and the new paste/paste resin-modified glass-ionomer cement, RMGIC (Ketac™ Nano 3M ESPE and Fuji Filling™ LC GC America) would affect the microtensile dentin bond strength (µTBS) of the material when compared to the traditional RMGIC with polyacrylic acid as a surface substrate pre-treatment. Materials and Methods: 96 extracted non-restored human molar were sectioned to expose occlusal dentin. Dentin surface was finished with SiC paper to standardize the smear layer. Bonding protocols of the different materials to dentin were performed following the use of two dentin conditioners. Eight groups (n=12) were tested: G1: Ketac Nano Primer + Ketac Nano, G2: Ketac Conditioner + Ketac Nano, G3: Ketac Nano Primer + Photac Fil, G4: Ketac Conditioner + Photac Fil, G5: GC Self Conditioner + Fuji Filling LC, G6: GC Cavity Conditioner + Fuji Filling LC, G7: GC Self Conditioner + Fuji II LC and G8: GC Cavity Conditioner + Fuji II LC. The specimens were stored in 37°C for 24h in 100% humidity before cutting non-trimmed beams for the µTBS with cross-sectional areas of approximately 0.8 × 0.8 mm2. Nine beams were used from each specimen. Test was done using universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1mm/min. Debonded specimens were examined under a stereomicroscope at 45× magnification to evaluate the failure mode. Eight randomly chosen representative debonded beams were imaged under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: µTBS in MPa (mean ± SE) were: G1: 9.5±1.0, G2: 11.0±1.0, G3:20.0±1.0, G4:16.8±0.9, G5: 15.1±1.0, G6: pre-test failure, G7: 20.0±1.0, G8:14.1±0.9. Weibull-distribution survival analysis was used to compare the differences in microtensile peak stress among the groups. Group5 has cohesive predominant faultier mod while the other groups have adhesive predominant failure. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the use of the novel non-rinse conditioners did not improve the microtensile bond strength of new paste/paste RMGIC to dentin. In fact, the use of the novel non-rinse conditioners enhanced the bond…

▼ To improve the wire bondability, interfacial adhesion and popcorn cracking resistance in the packaging processing of IC and MEMS chips, this thesis utilized oxygen and helium plasmas to modify and clean the surface of metal pads. The influences of the plasma cleaning time, metal pad materials and wire
bonding time/temperature/power on the
strength of wire
bonding were investigated.
Two different wire materials (Al wire with 32 μm in diameter and Au wire with 25 μm in diameter) were bonded on the surface of Al, Au and Pt metal pads using a commercial ultrasonic wire bonder (SPB-U688), respectively. The pull
strength detection of the implemented micro joints is characterized by an accurate pull
strength testing system (Dage SERIES-4000).
Based on hundred measurement results, this research has three conclusions described as follows. (I) The pull
strength of Au pad is higher than that of Al and Pt pads no matter with the plasma cleaning process or not. The maximum pull
strength (12.286 g) can be achieved as the surface of Au pad was modified by the helium plasma for 180 seconds. (II) Helium plasma cleaned wafer can obtain larger improvement of pull
strength than that of the oxygen plasma under the same plasma time. However, this result can not be concluded in Al and Pt pads. (III) The optimized wire
bonding time/power of the Au, Al and Pt pads are 0.07 s/2.1, 0.05 s/0.6 W and 0.03 s/2.7 W, respectively.

▼ The purposes were to evaluate the difference in SBS of
bonding and rebonding orthodontic attachments when using a CEP compared to a SEP and to evaluate if re-etching is necessary prior to rebonding with either a CEP or a SEP.
Orthodontic metal buttons were bonded to extracted human molars according to 4 protocols: In Group A, teeth were bonded with the CEP for the first and second bondings. In Group B, teeth were bonded with the CEP for the first
bonding but re-etching was omitted for the second
bonding. In Group C, teeth were bonded with the SEP for both bondings. In Group D, teeth were bonded with the SEP for the first
bonding but re-etching was omitted for the second
bonding.
The SBSs when the SEP was used for the first
bonding were significantly lower (P<0.001; 10.65 ± 4.33 MPa) than when the CEP was used (14.04 ± 3.51 MPa). The second
bonding omitting re-etching but still using the primer and adhesive generated significantly lower SBSs (P<0.001; 9.07 ± 4.53 MPa) than when re-etching was used (14.66 ± 3.70 MPa), but still above the "clinically acceptable" standard of 6-8 MPa for in vitro SBS testing. The second
bonding SBS omitting re-etching and not using any primer or adhesive was very low (2.61 ± 2.34 MPa) and would definitely negatively effect the outcome of orthodontic
bonding clinically.
When rebonding a bracket, re-etching may be omitted but a primer and adhesive must be applied to obtain a "clinically acceptable" SBS.

▼ The focus of the research and experiments in this thesis is Transient Liquid Phase (TLP)
Bonding of high
strength aluminum alloy using pure zinc as an interlayer material. The primary goal of this research was to determine if high
strength TLP
bonding of aluminum alloy 7075, the most common alloy used in aerospace structures, could be achieved, and if so, without causing significant loss of
strength to the aluminum alloy. In order to do this, many experiments were conducted to determine the appropriate
bonding parameters.
Preliminary experiments involving various heat treatments of aluminum 7075 samples were conducted to establish an acceptable range of
bonding temperatures. Before and after heat treatment, each sample was tested for ultrasonic pulse velocities and hardness values. These values were compared and an initial
bonding temperature was determined.
Several sets of
bonding experiments were performed applying variations of surface treatment,
bonding temperature,
bonding duration, and interlayer material. After
bonding, each sample was subjected to multiple types of analysis to assess the quality of the bond. Samples were visually inspected, scanned using a high definition Scanning Acoustic Microscope (SAM), tested for shear
strength using a Mechanical Testing System (MTS), and inspected with an optical metallographic microscope. Results of each set of bonds determined the variations applied to the following set. After many experimental bonds were tested, conclusions were drawn to establish optimal
bonding temperature and duration. Shear
strength results were analyzed considering structural aspects of the test specimens and limitations of the MTS. Future research and experiments that could be done to further understanding of this
subject matter was then identified.

▼ Orthodontic attachments must be able to bond to a wide
range of tooth and prosthetic surfaces. Despite the high prevalence
of fluorosis in many parts of South Africa (Louw A, Chikte U 1997),
only limited information is available on the integrity of the bond
between orthodontic brackets and fluorosed teeth.
The objective of
this study was to measure and compare Shear Bond Strengths (SBSs)
of metal and ceramic orthodontic brackets on fluorosed and
non-fluorosed teeth.
One hundred and twenty (60 fluorosed and 60
non-fluorosed) extracted premolar teeth were divided into four
groups A to D, consisting of 30 teeth in each group. BluGloo® was
used as an orthodontic adhesive to bond brackets on the buccal
surface of each tooth. The experimental groups consisted of Group
A, in which Nu-Edge® metal brackets were used and Group B, in which
InspireIce® ceramic brackets were bonded to fluorosed teeth. Group
C and D consisted of Nu-Edge® metal brackets and InspireIce®
ceramic respectively, bonded to non-fluorosed teeth.
Bonding
techniques were kept the same and standardised for all four groups.
An Instron testing device was used to debond and measure the SBSs.
SBSs were compared using ANOVA with posthoc analysis done using
Dunnett’s C test for pairwise comparisons. Significance was set at
P<0.05.
The results showed that SBS of Group B>Group
C>Group D>Group A. Ceramic brackets bonded to fluorosed teeth
had the highest SBS with a mean of 15.78 (SD=9.07) Megapascals
(MPa), while metal brackets bonded to fluorosed teeth produced the
lowest SBS of 8.41 (SD=4.68) MPa. The SBSs of ceramic brackets
bonded to fluorosed teeth was significantly higher than that of SBS
of metal brackets bonded to fluorosed teeth, but not significantly
different from SBSs obtained from either brackets bonded to
non-flurosed teeth.
The BluGloo adhesive if used to bond ceramic
brackets to fluorosed teeth can produce adequate SBS for clinical
use. The recommendation from this study is that ceramic brackets
can be used efficiently to bond to fluorosed teeth. A follow up
study should be carried out to assess the nature of enamel damage
caused during debonding of flourosed teeth. This is a laboratory
study and thus the clinical application should be interpreted with
caution.

▼ A novel room temperature
bonding method is used to package the micro-component. The
bonding method utilizes metal microcap to package the micro-component under room temperature status, which not only can provide micro-component mechanical support also can prevent micro-component from contamination. The
bonding condition under room temperature is the most conventional method can not achieve, which characteristic is the most significant effect factor to drive the wafer-level packaging process to improve in today. Utilizing ASTM standard, which was used as a macroscopic standard to evaluate and analyze the
bonding shear
strength relationship between the ASTM standard specimen and the metal microcap. The carrier wafer has been oxidized before photolithography process; the diameter of cavity and the contact area between the metal microcap and glass substrate were controlled by the photomask design and the accuracy of the photoresist exposure. The passivation treatment was developed to separate the microcap from the carrier wafer more easily. In this thesis, the metal microcap was fabricated by using electroforming process, which can control the thickness of metal microcap. The advantages of microcap are superior to the thin film poly-silicon made by the surface micromachining technique on the quality and mechanical properties. A glass is used as substrate of the metal microcap, and its transparent characteristic is a feature how we perform UV curing process. The adhesive can be cured under room temperature and the results exhibit the adhesive has excellent
bonding strength. SEM is used to analyze the passivation result, the increasing rate of electroforming thickness. The shear stress-strain relationship between the metal microcap and the ASTM standard specimen is also discussed and analyzed in this thesis.

▼ Interface
bonding between pavement layers is a key factor affecting the performance of any pavement structure. Over the years, several studies have been performed to better understand
bonding between pavement layers. The first phase of this study was a laboratory assessment, which analyzed different parameters to better characterize the interlayer bond in pavements. Phase 2 of the study was a field validation and evaluation. This thesis, based on the results of phase 2, focuses on optimizing in-situ tack coat application rate and field installation. The main objectives of phase 2 were to validate the lab-determined optimum residual application rate for tack coat materials on a milled hot-mix asphalt (HMA) surface and to evaluate field performance of tack coat materials. Several parameters were analyzed, including the cleaning method prior to tack coat application, the paving procedure, tack coat type, and existing pavement surface texture. Tack coat materials used were SS-1h, SS-1hp, and SS-1vh (non-track tack coat). For the cleaning methods, the conventional procedures, broom and vacuum, were used on most of the sections and were compared to air-blast cleaning.
Two paving procedures were studied: the conventional paving method using a distributor truck and a regular paver, and the spray paver, which applies tack coat and paves at the same time.
Twenty-six sections were constructed on Interstate 80 in Illinois, and 19 sections were built on Illinois Route 98. The Interstate 80 test sections were constructed on three existing pavement surfaces: milled HMA, milled Portland cement concrete (PCC), and fresh binder stone mastic asphalt (SMA).
Two tests were used to analyze interface
bonding: the interface shear test and the torque bond test. The test section on Illinois Route 98 was constructed on a milled surface. All specimens were cored in the field and tested at the Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) using the Interface Shear Test Device (ISTD).
The results showed similar bond
strength for the two types of cleaning methods; however, air-blast cleaning required use of a lower optimum residual application rate in the field to achieve the same bond
strength. The bond
strength at the interface when tack coat was applied with a spray paver is similar to the bond
strength achieved when a conventional paver was used. The optimum residual application rate for milled surfaces obtained from the laboratory was 0.06 gal/yd2 (0.27 L/m2). This rate was validated at both test sites. The optimum residual application rate obtained for fresh binder SMA was 0.02 gal/yd2 (0.09 L/m2). SS-1vh performed better than any other tack coat material studied, and SS-1hp performed better than SS-1h.
iii
Identification of the optimum tack coat application rate will help ensure cost-effective and efficient tack coat application and will enhance pavement performance. It will also help the industry to better optimize resources and improve pavement performance.

▼ Thermosonic ball bonding is a key technology in electrical interconnections between an integrated circuit and an external circuitry in microelectronics. Although this bonding process has been extensively utilised in electronics packaging industry, certain fundamental aspects behind all the practice are still not fully understood. This thesis is intended to address the existing knowledge gap in terms of bonding mechanisms and interfacial characteristics that are involved in thermosonic gold and copper ball bonding on aluminium pads. The research specifically targets the fine pitch interconnect applications where a thin metal wire of approximately 20 µm in diameter is commonly used. In thermosonic ball bonding process, a thin gold or copper ball formed at the end of a wire is attached to an aluminum pad through a combination of ultrasonic energy, pressure and heat, in order to initiate a complex solid-state reaction. In this research, the mechanisms of thermosonic ball bonding were elaborated by carefully examining interfacial characteristics as the results of the bonding process by utilising dual-beam focused ion beam and high resolution transmission electron microscopy, including the breakdown of the native alumina layer on Al pads, and formation of initial intermetallic compounds (IMCs). The effect of bonding parameters on these interfacial behaviours and bonding strength is also investigated in order to establish an inter-relationship between them. Interfacial evolution in both Au-Al and Cu-Al bonds during isothermal annealing in the temperature rage from 175ºC to 250ºC was investigated and compared. The results obtained demonstrated that the remnant alumina remains inside IMCs and moves towards the ball during annealing. The IMCs are formed preferentially in the peripheral and the central areas of the bonds during bonding and, moreover, they grow from the initially formed IMC particles. Growth kinetics of Cu-Al IMCs obey a parabolic growth law before the Al pad is completely consumed. The activation energies calculated for the growth of CuAl2, Cu9Al4 and the combination (CuAl2 + Cu9Al4) are 60.66 kJ/mol, 75.61 kJ/mol, and 65.83 kJ/mol, respectively. In Au-Al bonds, Au-Al IMC growth is controlled by diffusion only at the start of the annealing process. A t0.2-0.3 growth law can be applied to the Au-Al IMC growth after the Al pad is depleted. The sequence of IMC phase transformation in both Au-Al and Cu-Al bonds were investigated. Voids in Au-Al bonds grow dramatically during annealing, however, only a few voids nucleate and grow very slowly in Cu-Al bonds. The mechanisms of void formation, including volumetric shrinkage, oxidation and metal diffusion were proposed and discussed.

▼ This work describes the development of a new low
temperature
bonding technique for
bonding silicon-silicon and thick
silicon dioxide-Pyrex glass. Silicon-silicon
bonding was achieved
at 300 degrees centigrade with intermediate doped silicon dioxide
layer (0.5-0.7 microns thick). Pyrex glass was successfully bonded
to very thick silicon dioxide (2 microns thick) at 450-500 degrees
centigrade. Neither type of
bonding is possible with conventional
bonding techniques. A novel concept using sodium doped thermal
silicon dioxide intermediate layers was utilized for achieving this
bonding. Sodium doped silicon dioxide was thermally grown using wet
oxidation. A minute quantity of sodium chloride was mixed in
deionized water during wet oxidation to dope sodium into the
thermally grown oxide. With the application of heat and voltage,
the electrostatic force of attraction binds the samples together.
Bond strengths in the range of 1-4MPa were achieved. The author
worked with silicon dioxides that were all thicker than 0.5
microns. The author explored this new concept (developed earlier at
a very cursory level in this lab) and narrowed it to a greater
extent. The author also worked on other
bonding issues such as
Coherent Porous Silicon (CPS)
bonding to thick Pyrex glass samples
for micro loop heat pipe packaging, metal- metal
bonding utilizing
intermediate glass layers and direct
bonding of two thick glass
substrates. The author suggests some solutions to overcome the
constraints in
bonding the above-mentioned samples. Finally, the
author recommends further research in this novel
bonding technique
and also recommends some modifications to the SUSS MicroTec SB6
bonder.

▼ Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
In adhesive dentistry, obtaining a good bond is a fundamental goal. It has been suggested that filler addition to the adhesives would increase the bonding strength of the adhesive layer. Halloysite aluminosilicate nanotubes (HNTs) are biocompatible, hydrophilic, durable, and have high mechanical strength. These advantages make them good candidates to be used as reinforcing agents for improving the properties of dental adhesives.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of incorporating HNTs into a commercial two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system or one-step self-etch adhesive system on dentin shear bond strength.
HNTs were incorporated into the two commercial adhesive systems in 0 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, and 20 wt%. The commercial control adhesives and the experimental adhesives were used to bond occlusal dentin of 120 extracted human molar teeth and then tested for shear bond strength by a universal testing machine with a semi-circular edge at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. Debonded specimens were examined under light microscopy to evaluate the fracture pattern. Resin-dentin interface were evaluated under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after bonding dentin slabs using commercial control adhesives and experimental adhesive that showed numerically highest shear bond strength from each adhesive system. Two-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the effects of adhesive system and nanofiller content on shear bond strength. Pair-wise comparisons between groups were made using Fisher's (LSD) (p < 0.05).
For the self-etch adhesive system, only incorporation of 5 wt% showed a significant increase in shear bond strength to dentin compared with the commercial control group. For the etch-and-rinse adhesive system, there was no significant difference in shear bond strength between HNTs filled adhesives groups and the commercial control group. Resin-dentin interface SEM evaluation showed nanotubes infiltrated into dentinal tubules.
In conclusion, incorporating the self-etch adhesive system with 5 wt% HNTs increased the bond strength to dentin. Incorporation of up to 10 wt% filler concentration into both the self-etch and the etch-and-rinse adhesive systems did not adversely affect the bond strength to dentin or the handling properties. HNTs can penetrate along with resin tags into dentinal tubules, which could expand the use of their unique properties.

▼ Purpose: With the recent advent of many 1-step adhesive systems, clinicians’ preference have also been shifting to these systems in the clinics, although, these adhesives are being reported to produce lower bond strength compared to 2- or 3-step adhesives. Most of the 1-step adhesives are universal adhesives usable either in a self-etching mode or in a total-etching mode with a prior phosphoric acid etching step. Furthermore, bond strength of total-etch adhesives to moist dentin was found to be higher than that of dry dentin in a number of studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond performance of an universal adhesive to dentin in different etching strategies using micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) to dentin, SEM and TEM. Methods: Two adhesive systems used were, CLEARFIL Universal Bond (CUB) and 2-step self- etch adhesive CLEARFIL Mega Bond (CMB). K-ETCHANT Syringe (Ech) was used as an etching agent. Flat dentin surfaces of human molars were exposed and polished using600 SiC paper under running water. The prepared dentin surfaces were then subdivided into the following four groups: MB (CMB in self-etch mode)- the control, NE (CUB without Ech), ED (CUB applied in dry conditions following Ech) and EW (CUB applied in wet conditions following Ech). After resin composite build-up, each specimen was sectioned after water storage at 37°C for 24 hours to obtain beams with a bonded area of 1 mm2. µTBS test was performed at a cross-head speed of 1mm/min using half of the beams from each group. Rest of the beams was tested after 6 months. The data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey’s test. Results: Only ED showed significantly lower µTBS after 6 months compared to its 24 hours counterpart. There was no significant difference between the 4 groups in both 24 hours and 6 months. CUB showed stable adhesion durability regardless of the strategies. Conclusion: CLEARFIL Universal Bond (CUB) showed sufficient dentin bond strength in both self-etch and total-etch strategies. In terms of bond durability, wet bonding to acid-etched dentin may be preferred over bonding to dry acid-etched dentin.
1. ▼ Bi-material interface is often observed in many
advanced materials and structures. Measurement of the interface
bonding strength is more challenging than the measurement of pure
tensile or shear strength of a homogeneous material because of the
presence of the stress singularity at the interface corner,
non-uniform stress distribution along the interface and the
co-existence of normal and shear stress components. In this PhD
research project, a new innovative test method including specimen
design, test procedure and an iterative calculation algorithm, is
developed for more accurate determination of the interface bonding
strength. Three different types of bi-material interface are
considered in this study; interface between elastic and elastic
materials, elastic and viscoelastic materials, and viscoelastic and
viscoelastic materials. Analytical solutions are developed to
determine the stress singularity and conditions for its elimination
for all the above three types of interface. The analytical solution
for the elastic/elastic bi-material interface is derived based on
the axi-symmetric asymptotic analysis. For the elastic/viscoelastic
and viscoelastic/viscoelastic bi-material interfaces, the
analytical solutions are obtained from the solution of
elastic/elastic interface through the elastic-viscoelastic
correspondence principle. The developed analytical solutions are
verified by FEM numerical analyses. The elastic properties of
materials are determined through uni-axial tensile tests and the
viscoelastic properties are by relaxation tests. It is found that
the order of the stress singularity changes with time due to the
viscoelasticity of materials. If any stress singularity exists at
the interface corner, with time the order of singularity increases.
For a non–singular case, the stress singularity may increase or
decrease with time, depends on the specimen geometry. With the
developed design that can eliminate the stress singularity at the
interface corner, the loading capacity of the specimen is also
increased. For example, the tensile load carrying capacity of such
designed aluminum/epoxy bonded joint is increased by 2.65 times
than that of the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)
butt joint design. Finally, as a practical application of this
research, the optimal ranges of bonding angles at the interface
corners of porcelain fused to metal (PFM) dental crowns with
precious or non-precious metal alloys are suggested.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of water storage on resindentin bond strengths [μTBS] formed by different adhesive bonding approaches. A flat superficial dentin surface the 24 human third molars were exposed and polished to create a standardized smear layer. The teeth were randomly distributed into four different: total-etch 3 step (Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, 3M ESPE - SBMP), and total-etch 2 step (Adper Single Bond 2, 3M ESPE - SB); self-etch 2 step (AdheSE, Ivoclar/Vivadent - AD); and self-etch 1 step (Adper Prompt LPop , 3M ESPE - LP). Following the adhesive application (n=6), resin composite crowns were incrementally placed (Filtek Supreme XT - 3M ESPE) in order to obtain bonded sticks, with a cross-sectioned area of about 0,8 mm2. The bonded sticks were randomly divided and assigned to be tested immediately [IM] (n=30) or after 6 months of water storage [6M](n=30). Two-way ANOVA and Tukeys test showed that none of the adhesives showed degradation after 6 months, except SB, which was the one that achieved the highest μTBS either in the immediate time (49.13 MPa) and after 6 months (40.27 MPa). LP showed the lowest μTBS in both periods of evaluation (18.35 and 18.34 MPa). AD and SBMP showed intermediate…

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different application modes on the immediate and 6-month resin-dentin bond strength and silver nitrate uptake. Three one-step self-etch adhesive systems (One Coat 7.0 [OC], Coltène Whaledent; Clearfil S3 Bond [CS], Kuraray and FuturaBond NR [FB], Voco) were applied in a flat superficial dentin surface of thirty human molars under slight [S] or vibratory [V] application modes. Composite build-ups (Opallis, FGM) were constructed incrementally. After water storage at 37 C for 24 h, teeth were sectioned to obtain sticks with cross-sectional area of 0.8 mm2 to be tested in tension (0.5 mm/min) either immediately [IM] or after 6 months [6M] of water storage. Two bonded sticks from each tooth at each storage time were immersed in a 50% (w/v) solution of silver nitrate (24 h), photo-developed (8 h) and analyzed under SEM. The silver nitrate uptake was measured using the ImageTool 3.0 software. The data from each adhesive were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukeys test (α = 0.05). The adhesives OC and CS showed higher resin-dentin bond strength values and lower silver nitrate…

(more)

The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the bond strength between artificial resin teeth and the acrylic denture base made by the conventional technique and CAD/CAM. In the present study, a microtensile bond strength test was performed with a universal test machine, where the materials used in the construction of removable complete dentures were tested. The microtensile bond strength of two PMMA acrylic resins used for the complete denture base was evaluated, one pre-polymerized used in CAD/CAM systems and another by conventional heat cure together with commercial available acrylic resin teeth. 24 artificial teeth were prepared and divided into 4 groups (n =
6). Two different acrylic resin and two storage time. Both species were evaluated immediately for their preparation and 2 groups aged and tested at 6 months. Statistical analysis was performed by a two-way ANOVA at 0.05 significance level with a post hoc Tukey test. The bond strength of heat-polymerized acrylic was higher than CAD/CAM system. The analysis showed a significant statistical difference among the groups related to the type of material used (conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resins vs CAD/CAM acrylic resins disc (p = 0.001).

This study aims to test different adhesive protocols, as well as influence of chemical changes of Single Bond Universal to verify improvement in bond strength and stability of the hybrid layer. One hundred and forty-four teeth was obtained through the Bank of Human permanent teeth of UFSM and randomly assigned to each group, divided by the type of application protocol (control, Chlorhexidine, Warm Air, Double adhesive application, Photoactivation for 40 seconds and "All in One"), the type of adhesive (Single Bond Universal and Single Bond Universal modified) and storage time (24 hours and 06 months). To test the effects of the chemical change versus protocol was used a single multi-mode ethanol-based adhesive (Single Bond Universal) to isolate the chemical composition factor. Changes in chemical composition were held by incorporating the adhesive of a acrylamide of
pharmaceutical use. The addition of the polymer will occur in a concentration of 1ml/0,05ml the adhesive to generate a different versions to be tested. To analyze the differences between the two adhesives, ultimate bond strength analyzes was made to compare properties of the universal single bond with the universal single bond modified. To verify differences in the hybrid layer and the bond strength between the adhesive and the different application protocols, microtensile tests was done. The conceptual hypothesis of this study is that altered viscosity and different application protocols will improve adhesive properties and long-term bond strength. The null hypothesis is that changes in the protocol and viscosity of the adhesive do not result in significant improvements in outcomes studied. The results observed in the two articles showed an increase in dentin bond strength when an adhesive with addition of acrylamide was used, as well as an increase in its intrinsic resistance
verified by ultimate tests in both articles. Among the protocols, the group "all-in-One" obtained the best results but without statistical difference compared to Chlorhexidine, Warm air and Double Application. The Control group presented the worst result however was not statistically worse than the 40s Group. The addition of acrylamide in a universal ethanol based adhesive increased its intrinsic resistance as well as the dentin bond strength. Some changes in the adhesive´s protocol of a universal adhesive also increased the dentin bond strength.

The growth of electronic devices has led to an increase in electromagnetic pollution that can be harmful to sensitive electronic systems and living beings. One of the means of limiting the propagation of electromagnetic fields is the use of shielding. Then, the study focused on the elaboration of a bimetallic composite for magnetic shielding. The studied composite combines the physical properties of aluminum and steel via the Al8011/SteelDC01/Al8011 trilayer. The trilayer is produced by cold roll bonding (CRB). It has been found that the adherence quality of the Al/Steel interfaces and the architecture of the composite heavily depend on the CRB parameters. Careful preparation of the sheet and their concomitant surfaces is just as important as CRB itself. Furthermore, during CRB, the steel sheet was sensitive to plastic instabilities which subsequently led to its necking and fragmentation. These plastic instabilities promote adherence through Al/Al welds but are not a prerequisite. In terms of shielding effectiveness, the bimetallic composite has proved to be particularly interesting. Thanks to its composition and its structuring, it can attenuate both low (< 1 kHz) and high frequency (> 1 kHz) magnetic fields. In an iso-mass study, the composite showed a higher shielding…

▼ Strong underwater bonds between polycarbonate sheet
and various other substrates were achieved using ethyl
2-cyanoacrylate gel cured with an anionic photoinitiator
(dibenzoylferrocene). The gel reacts quickly with water on contact
and forms a protective polyethyl cyanoacrylate (PECA) skin. This
provides a diffusion barrier that protects the inner monomer from
further reaction with or polymerisation by water (hydroxide ions).
The PECA skin is, however, permeable to water and the inner monomer
slowly reacts as water diffuses through the PECA skin. The
application procedure for this adhesive is critical because of the
fast reaction with water. The adhesive should be applied at the
centre of the bond area in such a way as to cover the smallest
exposed surface area and that it should not be spread out over the
entire surface area. The PECA skin will rupture when the substrates
are pressed together, exposing unreacted monomer to the fresh new
surface between the two substrates. The adhesive displaces water as
it propagates towards the joint edges. In this way it is able to
form a strong underwater bond. Without a photoinitiator, ethyl
cyanoacrylate adhesives will form strong bonds to smooth underwater
surfaces. The addition of a photoinitiator (dibenzoylferrocene),
however, increases the rate at which the bond
strength develops.
Photo differential scanning calorimetric (photo-DSC) analysis was
used to determine the optimum photoinitiator concentration. A
concentration of between 0.3% (m/m) and 0.1% (m/m) was found to be
optimum for adhesive films between 0.5 and 1.2 mm thick.
Epoxy-based underwater adhesives have the disadvantage that the
cure rate is very slow at low water temperatures. In contrast, the
current system features a negative temperature dependence.
Therefore, the curing rate is faster at lower water temperatures,
making it highly suitable for very cold environmental conditions.
The underwater
bonding properties of cyanoacrylate adhesive were
measured on a wide range of metallic and non-metallic materials.
Bond strengths ranged from 1 to 5 MPa respectively. Bond
strength
(0.2 mm film thickness) develops in a very short time (less than a
minute) using a 5 mW/cm2 blue LED light source as trigger for the
photo initiator. Water temperatures between 1.5 and 40 °C did not
influence the ultimate bond
strength achieved following 50 seconds
of illumination. The reduction in bond
strength due to the ethyl
cyanoacrylates reacting with water was measured in artificial sea
water and potable water. A 20% reduction in bond
strength was found
after 10 minutes of water exposure. The underwater bond should
therefore be made as soon as possible following exposure to water.
Bond ageing studies on both steel and polycarbonate showed an
initial decrease in bond
strength (during the first 50 hours);
thereafter the bond
strength stabilises.
