▼ Electrical stimulation of neural tissue is known to elicit sensations and ac-tuations within the human body. Throughout the last decades, the abilityto communicate with neurons was grown and the process become moresophisticated. Todays matured microprocessor technologies and architec-tures allow complex multi-channel stimulation and recording. However, chronic studies of implanted neuroprosthetics comprising hundreds of stim-ulation channels have never been conducted due to the lack of miniaturisedencapsulation technologies which can be implanted within the smallestspaces while still withstanding the harsh environment for a long-period oftime. In this study, steps towards achieving this goal have been success-fully carried out. Ongoing research was reviewed such that not only thematerials, but also their combinations at the joining interfaces are able towithstand decades of implantation. Metallising alumina with platinum wasof particular interest due to its established presence in neurostimulators forseveral decades. In depth knowledge of the
bonding mechanism is essentialto the understanding of this interface because it a_ects the hermeticity andbiocompatibility of the device. Platinum to platinum and titanium to alu-mina interfaces where investigated for structural assembly and long-termstable interconnections. Further studies focused on hermeticity testing ofmicrodevices using helium leak detection. These studies allow to determinepossible methods for non-destructive, case-by-case testing to estimate thetheoretical life-time of each encapsulation. Microfabrication methods weredeveloped and a design for a neurostimulator encapsulation was outlined toallow the implantation into human body where space constraints are highlyrestrictive. An illustrative example of the how the above studies can beapplied was provided by the complete design-to-prototype developmentof a visual prosthesis incorporating 98 stimulation channels. The resultsof testing of the method to miniaturise neuroprosthetic implants indicateadvantages of allowing more complex stimulation methods by providingincreased numbers of stimulation channels, increased life-time of the im-plants, and miniaturisation to target newly accessible implantation sites.

▼ The improvement in mechanical strength offered by ultra fine- (UF) and nanocrystalline (NC) sized grains is very attractive for potential applications of structural metals. Accumulative Roll-Bonding (ARB) is one of the promising new techniques for producing bulk UF grained metals. There are numerous reports on the monotonic mechanical behavior of various ARBed metals, however there are few, if any, on the cyclic deformation behavior of such metals. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the cyclic deformation behaviour and the related micro-mechanisms of ARBed metals from a fundamental perspective. To achieve this, the microstructure and the deformation behavior of commercial purity aluminum, OFHC copper, and DLP copper after ARB processing have been systematically characterized.
The as-ARBed microstructure is found to be composite natured, with constituents of different grain sizes. The three constituents are: (i)UF grained matrix, (ii)NC primary discontinuities, and (iii)conventional sized pre-existing coarse grains. Due to this composite nature, three different cyclic strain accommodation mechanisms were found in the ARBed OFHC copper: (i)conventional dislocation patterns in the large grains, (ii)reactivation of pre-existing shear bands, and (iii)stress/strain driven grain coarsening at sites of strain localization. The order of activation of the mechanisms can be described with a composite approach based on activation energy. The occurrence of grain coarsening is the major contributor to the cyclic softening response observed in OFHC copper. Conversely, the lesser extent of cyclic softening in the other two metals is likely due to the higher microstructure stability of the initial as-ARBed materials. The microstructure stability is believed to be the primary influencing factor for the extent of grain coarsening and cyclic softening. The applied cyclic plastic strain is a secondary influencing factor, although this is generally overshadowed by the limitation of grain coarsening due to the short cyclic lifespan of these metals. The occurrences of shear banding and grain coarsening reported in the present ARBed metals are similarly reported for UF grained metals from other processes, e.g. ECAPed metals. Thus, its relationship to the cyclic deformation response and governing factors are believed to be applicable for UF grained metals in general.

This research aims to examine the association between childhood trauma, parental bonding, defensive styles, and current symptoms in adult patients who sought care at an analytical psychotherapy clinic. The sample consisted of 197 patients in an analytical psychotherapy clinic linked to a training institute. Participants responded to four self-report instruments that assessed, respectively, the presence and frequency of several types of early trauma, the type of parental
attachment, the styles of defenses, and the intensity of current symptoms, considering a wide variety of psychopathological syndromes. The results obtained suggest that most patients were exposed to traumatic experiences in childhood and that several traumas have a positive and significant association with various dimensions of current symptoms, as well as parental ties and defensive styles. From the multiple linear regression, it appears that the styles of defenses, when analyzed together with the other variables, explained the level of psychological suffering derived from the symptoms.

Organic coatings applied on the surface of cast iron pipes ensure very good chemical and anti-corrosion protection against aggressive effluents. To improve adherence between coating (epoxy) and substrate, a surface preparation is required. Among conventional processes shot blasting has emerged as the most efficient and cheapest solution for ensuring stripping while generating adapted roughness. However, as it may enhance both mechanical anchorage and chemical bonding a better understanding of these phenomena should be developed. Besides new eco-friendly alternatives were investigated.Indeed, new techniques were evaluated, i.e. laser structuring and an ultra-high pressure water jet whose major benefits are understanding the effect of ablation and surface roughness prior to applying a coating. Moreover, two other conventional processes (sand blasting and brushing) were introduced to obtain a various roughness. Results obtained were then analyzed to further understand bonding mechanisms at the interface.Several processes were then implemented to evaluate the surface morphology as well as the surface chemistry (spectroscopy Raman and XPS) correlated to the adhesion mechanisms

Polymers are little considered at the moment, in the wide domain of micro- and nano- technologies. They present however certain remarkable properties by comparison with the materials used in microelectronics. For example their flexibility and their lightness allow thinking to polymers as flexible supports for microelectronic components. Besides, they offer solutions for assembling various materials. This study concerns exactly these two items. First of all, we studied bonding mechanisms implied in the assembly of silicon wafers via polymer layers. Then we proposed models for mechanism of single-crystalline layer transfers onto polymers. The mechanical properties of the considered materials (mainly single-crystalline silicon and glassy or rubber polymers) as well as…

▼ Many steps are involved in transfection and
must be overcome to provide a successful gene delivery agent: DNA
binding/compaction, cellular recognition and uptake, endosomal
escape, trafficking through the cell and eventual release of cargo.
All of these potential hurdles are being investigated by the
Reineke group using our polymeric vectors, which are composed of
carbohydrate and oligoamine monomers; however, the crucial first
step to efficient transfection, DNA binding, is an event rarely
dissected quantitatively. The purpose of this
dissertation research was to carefully elucidate aspects of the
mechanism of interaction between our polymers and plasmid DNA
(pDNA) through biophysical techniques, such as microcalorimetry,
dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, circular dichroism, and
FTIR spectroscopy. The combination of these results revealed the
significance of the carbohydrate hydroxyl stereochemistry and amide
spacing to the DNA affinity, as a result of hydrogen
bonding to the
backbone and base pairs. As the amine number increased from 1 to 4,
the DNA binding mechanism of trehalose-containing polymers became
less dependent upon electrostatics and more on hydrogen
bonding.
This change is a result of decreasing charge fraction with
increasing amine density. To determine the necessity of
charge-charge interaction between our polycations and nucleic
acids, a new series of polymers, replacing the oligoamine with an
analogous oligo(ethylene glycol), was synthesized and its
characterization compared to the poly(glycoamidoamine)s previously
studied. It was shown that removing the electrostatic component
prevented DNA binding. Therefore, we conclude that long-range
Coulombic attraction initiates the interaction between our
polymeric vectors and nucleic acids, but then hydrogen
bonding
becomes a dominant contributor. Stabilization of
our delivery agents to physiological salt and serum conditions is
also critical to their clinical use, so another aspect of this
thesis project was to conjugate poly(ethylene glycol) to the
vectors to provide charge shielding and steric hindrance to thwart
aggregation. This stabilization was successfully accomplished with
the poly(glycoamidoamine)s using two different formulations and the
cell transfection and uptake was monitored with and without
cell-targeting moieties. All of these research efforts contribute
both to the fundamental knowledge of interaction
mechanisms and
practical applicability of using these agents for therapeutic
delivery of nucleic acids.

▼ There is growing research that is examining the impact of social-economic inequities on peoples health and well-being. While there is an increased focus on the pathways between inequities, and health and well-being, there is a lack of research that specifically addresses how societal power structures cause these inequities and how peoples intersecting social identities are impacted differently by power structures. Health research predominantly focuses on identity variables as being categorical rather than interconnected. However, a categorical and disconnected focus limits the understanding of how peoples lived experiences are impacted by interconnected social and economic inequities. With a social determinants of health (SDOH)-intersectional framework, this qualitative study explored the pathways between Canadian power structures that result in social-economic inequities, and how these inequities impact peoples well-being on the basis of their intersecting identities that include being a first-generation immigrant, a visible minority, and of Indo-Caribbean ethnicity. Examining Indo-Caribbean immigrants settlement experiences with an intersectional lens will both deepen and broaden the understanding of how power structures impact their settlement and well-being experiences. Individual interviews (n = 31) and 2 group interviews (n = 3; n = 2) were thematically analyzed. Themes relating to power-over, power-with and power-within in the context of SDOH were identified. Power-over themes included language challenges, deskilling and survival employment, and perceived discrimination. Gender-specific power-over themes included skilled males work-life imbalance and post-secondary educated males job promotion discrimination. Power-with and power-within themes included settlement support from family and friends. Gender specific power-with and power-within themes included male youths sense of belonging through sport and female mothers sense of independence and accomplishment from work. These findings provide new understanding regarding how nativist power structures result in the dismissal of Indo-Caribbean immigrants cultural capital. Findings also indicate how Indo-Caribbean immigrants utilize power-with and power-within to socially progress in the face of these inequities. This study contributes to a shift from focusing on singular identity factors to simultaneously including intersecting multiple identities when examining inequities and well-being. This shift will contribute to new understandings and will serve to better inform policies that aim to reduce structural barriers.
