▼ Chemically identical but topologically different
cyclic and
linear polymers not only result in marked differences in dynamics, but also lead to unique transport properties of their
blends, where
cyclic polymers have chances to be threaded onto the
linear polymers. This dissertation addresses the effect of ring architecture on dynamics using different time/length scale techniques: self-diffusion coefficients, NMR spin-spin relaxation time (T2) and bulk viscosity.
In deuterated water, synthesized
cyclic poly(oxyethylene) (CPOE) (400-1500 g/mol) diffused faster than corresponding
linear POE (LPOE) and
linear POE dimethyl ether (LPOEDE). However, the self-diffusion coefficients in melts were arranged in the following manner: LPOEDE > CPOE > LPOE, in excellent agreement with T2 and viscosity data, showing topological and chain end effects. Compared to LPOEDE, both CPOE and LPOE had higher activation energies for viscosity with less dependence on the molecular weight.
In the
blends of CPOE and LPOE for 900 and 1500 g/mol, the diffusion coefficient and viscosity in melts were higher and lower than the values predicted by a binary mixing rule, respectively. These deviations were attributed to the threading conformation, and the weight fraction of the threaded chains for 1500 g/mol was estimated by a three-term mixing rule. This threading conformation also appeared to influence such important bulk properties as the glass transition and spherulitic growth rate of the
blends.

▼ Pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known for their toxic effects
which may lead to the cause of degenerative diseases in both humans and animals. PAHs are
widespread in the environment, and may be found in water, food, automotive industry and
petrochemical industries to name but a few sources. Literature reports have highlighted industrial
workplace exposure to PAHs as a leading cause for development of cancer in workers.
Particularly, workers in the petrochemical industry are adversely affected and the incidence of
skin and lung cancer in this population group is high.
The United States of America in its guidelines developed by environmental protection agency
(EPA) has identified 18 PAHs as priority pollutants. Among these are anthracene,
benzo[a]pyrene and pyrene which have been selected as the focal point of this study due to their
significance in the petrochemical industry.
Due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic properties reported in literature for certain PAHs, there
have been monitoring procedures taken in most countries around the world. The commonly used
analytical methods for the detection of PAHs from industrial samples are high performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to fluorescence detection, membrane filtration,
ozonation and reverse osmosis. Analysis of PAHs from the petrochemical industry is typically
performed by HPLC method as well as sono-degredation in the presence of oxygen and
hydrogen peroxide.

literary science - The oral literature

▼ The classical n-bugs problem has attracted considerable attention from researchers. This problem stems from the study of movement of a group of animals. In the context of multi- agent systems the problem has been modelled as
cyclic pursuit. Under this paradigm, every agent, indexed i, chases its unique leader, agent i + 1 (modulo n), with n being the total number of agents.
In the existing literature,
cyclic pursuit has been studied for homogeneous agents where each agent’s velocity is proportional to the distance separating it from its leader and is directed along the line joining it to its leader. The constant of proportionality, initially chosen to be the same for all the agents, resulted in consensus in position, without the need for any centralized controller. Later, the constant of proportionality, alternately called the gain, was allowed to be heterogeneous and positional consensus was still achieved. Moreover, it was shown that the point of convergence, where the agents rendezvous, could be chosen at will, except for some diagnostic cases. In this thesis, besides admitting heterogeneous gains, the agents are assumed to pursue their respective leaders with an angle of deviation from the line joining them to their corresponding leaders. This expands the reachability set (set of points where the agents can rendezvous) for the system of agents to include points that were hitherto unreachable. Sufficient conditions for stability of such systems have been derived in this thesis. Detailed analysis of the reachability set has also been carried out.
Some researchers have also investigated hierarchical
cyclic pursuit, where there are
multiple levels of pursuit. For instance, in the two level hierarchical pursuit, the agents are divided into m groups of n agents each, where each agent in a group chases its leader within the group as well as a similarly indexed agent in its leading group. Thus, groups of agents are also in
cyclic pursuit. So far, only homogeneous gains were considered under this paradigm. The present thesis admits heterogeneous gains and establishes necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of heterogeneous hierarchical
cyclic pursuit, that generalize existing results. Reachable sets are also derived for this case. It is proved that the existing results can be derived as special cases of the ones considered in this thesis.
As an extension to a realistic application, the importance of expansion in reachable set vis-a`-vis capturing a moving target is highlighted in this thesis. It has been shown that if the target’s initial position is reachable, then using a control law proposed in the thesis, the target can be captured. This control law is essentially an augmented
cyclic pursuit law with the target’s velocity information fed to each agent in addition to the conventional
cyclic pursuit command. Analysis has been carried out for agents with double integrator dynamics as well. A control law in conjunction with an algorithm is proposed that helps ensure global reachability of agents, with double…

▼ The previous goal of this research was to show that epic time does not have
to function exclusively as “closed”, nor to hold “the island position” put
against the other epochs, the opinion that prevailed in recent times when
Serbian folk epic and Russian epic folk songs (byliny) were compared. The
main method of this research is semiological, but when the reseached mingled
with scientific, linguistic, literary scientific, antropological and other
types of knowledge (different methodological points of departure), it
inevitably took interdisciplinary character and lead to methodological
pluralism. The main point of this research was to figure out the way in which
time in a poetic narrative (narrative time) relates to the real (historical,
i.e., objective) time, as well as the way it functions as biographical time
of the character determined by sociocultural facts in which a variation
exists, connected to different age identities. The starting point from which
biological and social time measures is the birth of a hero. His birth as well
as his origin is highly unusual. The period of childhood lasts relatively
shortly. The liminal phase of the child is abandoned with his first
achievement, or heroic marriage. The adolescent then acquires a new status –
status of young warrior. Once the status of warrior is acquired, the hero
spends the rest of his life in constant confirmation, more with every battle.
Adulthood, therefore, functions as an unmarked (usual) maturity identity of
the hero. By handing down his heroic symbols (the horse and the weapon) to
his son, the hero renounces his status and becomes old. His leaving is
accomplished in two ways – by changing the surrounding – becoming an advisor
or a sage – or by dying whereby the unusual hero, in compliance with the the
plots of the hero's death poems, faces unusual death. Bounded by birth and
death, biography of an epic hero in a particular plot actualizes one of the
(usually most important) moments of his life (the first conflict, marriage,
etc.) weaving around this point the temporal foundation of the poem. Time in
oral folk epic creates a very compound system of relations – both in
extra-poetic reality and within the “epic time”. The first type of
relationship is achieved with breaking through the barrier of the (recent)
past in chronicle modeled poems, by introducing the narrators alter ego, a
narrator – participant (i.e., by introducing the internal perspective of the
text). Unlike the previous – mobility (before all – mutual approximation) of
different biographical times of the characters who share mutual past –
enabled different characters whose historical prototypes are severed by
several centuries to act together. Appearance of particular characters in
particular plots could be conditioned by historical setting, as well as by
the fund of knowledge in the tradition, which create the role (sphere of
interest) that the hero is going to play. Independently on the category of
character, time in the poem reflects the…

▼ The cutwidth of different graphs is a topic that has been extensively studied. The basis of this paper is the cutwidth of complete
n-partite graphs. While looking at the cutwidth of complete
n-partite graphs, we strictly consider the
linear embedding and
cyclic embedding. The relationship between the
linear cutwidth and the
cyclic cutwidth is discussed and used throughout multiple proofs of different cases for the
cyclic cutwidth. All the known cases for the
linear and
cyclic cutwidth of complete bipartite, complete tripartite, and complete
n-partite graphs are highlighted.
The main focus of this paper is to expand on the
cyclic cutwidth of complete tripartite graphs. Using the relationship of the
linear cutwidth and
cyclic cutwidth of any graph, we find a lower bound and an upper bound for the
cyclic cutwidth of complete tripartite graph K_(r,r,pr) where
r is odd and
p is a natural number. Throughout this proof there are two cases that develop,
p even and
p odd. Within each case we have to consider the cuts of multiple regions to find the maximum cut of the
cyclic embedding. Once all regions within each case are considered, we discover that the upper and lower bounds are equivalent. This discovery of the
cyclic cutwidth of complete tripartite graph K_(r,r,pr) where r is odd and
p is a natural number results in getting one step closer to finding the
cyclic cutwidth of any complete tripartite graph K_(r,s,t).

▼ Consider a network which consists of noiseless point to point channels. In this network, the source node wants to send messages to a specific set of sink nodes. If an intermediate node v has just one input channel then the received symbol by that node can be replicated and sent to the outgoing channels from v. If v has at least two incoming channels then it has two options. It can either send the received symbols one-by-one, one symbol in each time unit, or v can transmit a combination of the received symbols. The former choice takes more time compared to the latter option, which is called network coding.
In the literature, it has been shown that in a single source finite acyclic network the maximum throughput can be achieved by using
linear network codes. Significant effort has been made to efficiently construct good network codes. In addition, a polynomial time algorithm for constructing a
linear network code on a given network was introduced. Also an algorithm for constructing a
linear multicast code on an acyclic network was introduced. Finally, a method for finding a representation matrix for the network matroid of a given network G was also introduced. This matrix can be used to construct a generic code.
In this thesis we first provide a review of some known methods for constructing
linear multicast, broadcast and dispersion codes for
cyclic and acyclic networks. We then give a method for normalization of a non-normal code, and also give a new algorithm for constructing a
linear multicast code on a
cyclic network. The construction of generic network codes is also addressed.

In this thesis, we have tackled the problem of blind separation of linear mixtures of sources with cyclo-stationarity properties. Three applications were studied : telecommunications, mechanical vibrations and biomechanics. First, two new methods have been proposed, the first one aims to blindly separate cyclo-stationary sources sharing one or more unknown cyclic frequencies. It combines the joint diagonalization with a new useful point detector (time lag-cyclic frequency) to compose the set of cyclic correlation matrices to be jointly diagonalized. As for the second method, it aims to identify the mixture matrix of cyclo-stationary sources of unknown and different cyclic frequencies. The identification begins with a step of detecting the matrices of rank one, then the product of selected matrices is decomposed into eigen-elements, and finally a hierarchical regrouping method returns the columns of our sought matrix. Both solutions have been applied to telecommunications signals. In a second step, we first applied the first proposed method on mechanical signals coming from a bank of faulty bearings in order to test its ability to separate the sources. Next, we proposed an approach based on sparse component analysis to separate the components of the ground reaction force with cyclo-stationary properties at order 1 and 2

▼ One of the main focus of research on multi-agent systems is that of coordination in a group of agents to solve problems that are beyond the capability of a single agent. Each agent in the multi-agent system has limited capacity and/or knowledge which makes coordination a challenging task. Applications of multi-agent systems in space and ocean exploration, military surveillance and rescue missions, require the agents to achieve some consensus in their motion. The consensus has to be achieved and maintained without a centralized controller. Multi-agent system research borrows ideas from the biological world where such motion consensus strategies can be found in the flocking of birds, schooling of fishes, and colony of ants. One such classes of strategies are the
cyclic pursuit strategies which mimic the behavior of dogs, birds, ants, or beetles, where one agent pursues another in a
cyclic manner, and are commonly referred to as the `bugs' problem,
In the literature,
cyclic pursuit laws have been applied to a swarm of homogenous agents, where there exists a predefined
cyclic connection between agents and each agent follows its predecessor. At equilibrium, the agents reach consensus in relative positions. Equilibrium formation, convergence, rate of convergence, and stability are some of the aspects that have been studied under
cyclic pursuit.
In this thesis, the notion of
cyclic pursuit has been generalized. In
cyclic pursuit, usually agents are homogenous in the sense of having identical speeds and controller gains where an agent has an unique predecessor whom it follows. This is defined as the basic
cyclic pursuit (BCP) and the sequence of connection among the agents is defined as the Pursuit sequence (PS). We first generalize this system by assuming heterogeneous speed and controller gains. Then, we consider a strategy where an agent can follow a weighted centroid of a group of other agents instead of a single agent. This is called centroidal
cyclic pursuit (CCP). In CCP, the set of weights used by the agents are assumed to be the same. We generalize this further by considering the set of weights adopted by each agent to be different. This defines a generalized centroidal
cyclic pursuit (GCCP). The behavior of the agents under BCP, CCP and GCCP are studied in this thesis.
We show that a group of holonomic agents, under the
cyclic pursuit laws ¡ BCP, CCP and GCCP ¡ can be represented as a
linear system. The stability of this system is shown to depend on the gains of the agents. A stable system leads to a rendezvous of the agents. The point of rendezvous, also called the reachable point, is a function of the gains. In this thesis, the conditions for stability of the heterogeneous system of agents in
cyclic pursuit are obtained. Also, the reachable point is obtained as a function of the controller gains. The reachable set, which is a region in space where rendezvous can occur, given the initial positions of the agents, are determined and a procedure is proposed for calculating the gains of the agents for rendezvous…

In this work we compute the weight and the dimension of all cyclic codes of length pn in the group algebra FqCpn, where p is a prime number and Fq is a finite field of characteristic q. Furthermore, we compute the weight of codes which are given by the sum of two minimal abelian codes in Fq(Cp × Cp). In this way, it was possible to compare briefly cyclic codes and non-cyclic abelian codes of length p2.

resistência do material.

▼ Error-control codes provide a mechanism to increase the reliability of digital data being processed, transmitted, or stored under noisy conditions. Cyclic codes constitute an important class of error-control code, offering powerful error detection and correction capabilities. They can easily be generated and verified in hardware, which makes them particularly well suited to the practical use as error detecting codes.A cyclic code is based on a generator polynomial which determines its properties including the specific error detection strength. The optimal choice of polynomial depends on many factors that may be influenced by the underlying application. It is therefore advantageous to employ programmable cyclic code hardware that allows a flexible choice of polynomial to be applied to different requirements. A novel method is presented in this thesis to realise programmable cyclic code circuits that are fast, energy-efficient and minimise implementation resources. It can be shown that the correction of a single-bit error on the basis of a cyclic code is equivalent to the solution of an instance of the discrete logarithm problem. A new approach is proposed for computing discrete logarithms; this leads to a generic deterministic algorithm for analysed group orders that equal Mersenne numbers with an exponent of a power of two. The algorithm exhibits a worst-case runtime in the order of the square root of the group order and constant space requirements. This thesis establishes new relationships for finite fields that are represented as the polynomial ring over the binary field modulo a primitive polynomial. With a subset of these properties, a novel approach is developed for the solution of the discrete logarithm in the multiplicative groups of these fields. This leads to a deterministic algorithm for small group orders that has linear space and linearithmic time requirements in the degree of defining polynomial, enabling an efficient correction of single-bit errors based on the corresponding cyclic codes.

Characterizing the behaviour of bituminous materials is essential for the design of pavement structures and to predict their service life more accurately. Indeed, these materials are subjected to complex phenomenon, mechanical, thermal, physical and chemical that are often coupled. Due to the complexity of the phenomenon observed and with the emergence of new materials and new production techniques, advances laboratories studies and rheological modelling are necessary. With the existing methods, it is possible to characterize the materials in laboratories using expensive hydraulic presses. Moreover, most of these tests cannot be used directly on pavement structures. In this thesis, a dynamic test based on wave propagation was developed to characterize bituminous mixtures in the linear viscoelastic domain. It is a nondestructive test, far less expensive than the existing tests and that could be adapted for in situ measurements. Complex methods of inverse analysis of wave propagation in a viscoelastic medium were developed to obtain the thermomechanical properties of bituminous mixtures from the signals measured experimentally. The linear viscoelastic properties of different mixtures obtained from the developed dynamic test were compared to the results of more conventional cyclic tension-compression tests.

▼ The goal of this work was to simulate the behaviour of ice under cyclic loading. The linear viscoelastic Kelvin, Maxwell and Burgers models were implemented in Matlab by means of The Boltzmann superposition principle. This method was verified using cases which could be represented by analytical solutions. During the extensive sensitivity analysis carried out, it was determined that the ratio n/(f?) influences the shape of the strain response curve in a creep test for all of the models considered in this study. With the knowledge of parameter n/(f?), preliminary conclusion on the result of the test can be drawn. The change of the second modulus is defined by the Kelvin unit which determines the delayed elastic deformations. The time required for these deformations to fully developed is given by 5?2. The changes in the value of the second modulus occurs only before this value is attained. However in linear viscoelastic Burgers model, this change is relatively small . This is because the Maxwell unit in the Burger model has a major influence on the shape of the stress-strain curves. Available literature was used to obtain the input parameters for Burgers model for ice. They were obtained by calibration of the model data with the experimental data presented therein by producing a best fit curve. Since this study utilized a non-linear model to replicate the experimental data, it was also used to compare the results of a linear model with a non-linear model. The region conforming to the delayed elastic deformation was not represented accurately by the linear model. Uniaxial cyclic compression test performed at UNIS was modeled using the linear viscoelastic Burgers model using the scaled down input parameters obtained through calibration with fresh ice creep test to enable their application to this case. The viscoelastic model was unable to completely agree with the findings from the test carried out at UNIS.

▼ Tridiagonal solvers are important building blocks for a wide range of scientific applications that are commonly performance-sensitive. Recently, many-core architectures, such as GPUs, have become ubiquitous targets for these applications. Therefore, a high-performance general-purpose GPU tridiagonal solver becomes critical. However, no existing GPU tridiagonal solver provides comparable quality of solutions to most common, general-purpose CPU tridiagonal solvers, like Matlab or Intel MKL, due to no pivoting. Meanwhile, conventional pivoting algorithms are sequential and not applicable to GPUs.
In this thesis, we propose three scalable tridiagonal algorithms with diagonal pivoting for better quality of solutions than the state-of-the-art GPU tridiagonal solvers. A SPIKE-Diagonal Pivoting algorithm efficiently partitions the workloads of a tridiagonal solver and provides pivoting in each partition. A Parallel Diagonal Pivoting algorithm transforms the conventional diagonal pivoting algorithm into a parallelizable form which can be solved by high-performance parallel
linear recurrence solvers. An Adaptive R-
Cyclic Reduction algorithm introduces pivoting into the conventional R-
Cyclic Reduction family, which commonly suffers limited quality of solutions due to no applicable pivoting. Our proposed algorithms can provide comparable quality of solutions to CPU tridiagonal solvers, like Matlab or Intel MKL, without compromising the high throughput GPUs provide.

▼ The topic of structural damage caused by fires following an earthquake (FFE) has been discussed extensively by many researchers for over a decade in order to bring the two fields closer together in the context of performance based structural engineering. Edinburgh University, Heriot-Watt University, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) and Indian Institute of Science initiated a collaboration to study this problem under a UK-India Engineering Research Initiative (UKIERI) funded project. The first construction of a single-storey reinforced concrete frame at IIT Roorkee was completed in summer 2011; this is known as the Roorkee Frame Test 1 throughout this thesis. This thesis presents the modelling of the Roorkee Frame Test 1 using the finite element method and assesses the capability of the numerical methodologies for analysing these two sequential events. Both two and three dimensional finite element models were developed. Beam and shell elements were chosen for the numerical modelling, which was carried out using the general purpose finite element package ABAQUS (version 6.8). The variation in material properties caused by these two types of loading, including strength and stiffness degradation, compressive hardening, tension stiffening, and thermal properties, is implemented in the numerical modelling. Constitutive material calculations are in accordance with EC4 Part 1.1, and all loading is according to IS 1893:2002 Part 1 (Indian Standard). The time-temperature curve used in the analysis is based on data from the test carried out. The behaviour of the Roorkee Frame Test 1 when subjected to monotonic, cyclic lateral loading followed by fire is presented. The capacity of the frame when subjected to lateral loading is examined using a static non-linear pushover method. Incremental lateral loading is applied in a displacement-controlled manner to induce simulated seismic damage in the frame. The capacity curve, hysteresis loops and residual displacements are presented, discussed and compared with the test results. The heat transfer analysis using three dimensional solid elements was also compared against temperature distributions recorded during the Roorkee frame fire test. Based on the smoke layer theory, two emissivity values were defined. In this study, the suitability of numerical modelling using ABAQUS to capture the behaviour of Roorkee frame test is examined. The results from this study show that the 3D ABAQUS model predicted more reliable hysteresis curves compared to the 2D ABAQUS model, but both models estimated the lateral load capacity well. However neither model was able to simulate the pinching effect clearly visible in the hysteresis curves from the test. This was due to noninclusion of the bond slip effect between reinforcing bars and concrete. The residual displacement obtained at the end of the cyclic lateral loading analysis from the 2D ABAQUS model is higher than that seen in the test. However, the result in the 3D ABAQUS model matched the trend obtained in the test. The both…

Hollow columns of reinforced concrete are usually used in works of art (e.g. Bridges), when it’s required to have a large height, but with a high rigidity and low weight. These same of columns have a very similar behavior to that of structural walls, therefore modes of failure and damage pattern can be associated with both mechanisms bending and shear where usually the shear failure mechanism is predominant. In this context, is not simple to define damage of is quite complex and defining a single parameter that is able to predict such behavior. Conducted a survey it was seen that there are very few studies on the pattern of damage and economic consequences of repair and reinforcement of existing physical damage in such
elements when subjected to seismic loads. This information is very important when it equates the cost-benefit analysis of measures to prevent or repair of earthquake damage in a pattern. Therefore, this study aims to establish a strategy to identify the limit states of seismic damage in hollow columns of reinforced…

▼ The present research work involves two different types of polymers which were synthesized under high vacuum conditions with known procedures leading to final materials with molecular and compositional homogeneity (model polymers). Linear diblock copolymers of the PS-b-PB1,2, type, where PS is polystyrene and ΡΒ corresponds to polybutadiene, linear homopolypeptides of tyrosine, the corresponding cyclic architectures, as well as linear diblock and triblock of the A-b-B and A-b-B-b-A types, where Α corresponds to conventional polymer segments [ΡΒ, ΡΙ and PDMS: polydiemthylsiloxane] and B to polypeptide chains like PTyr and PLeu (polytyrosine and polyleucine) respectively. The first set of samples were synthesized in order to modify the PB segments with various organic reactions in to new chains consisting of large side groups per monomeric unit in order to study their change in behavior and its potential applications as sensors due to their electric and thermodynamic properties and their very low surface tension. A very straightforward challenge in the synthesis of polypeptides is their ability to self-assemble in structures that are not existing in natural such materials (proteins). Such polypeptides exhibit identical behavior with block copolymers and therefore can be applied as antifoaming media, membranes and micelles. Actually copolymers exhibiting one segment hydrophilic and the other hydrophobic form micelles and therefore could be used in pharamaceutical applications and in geneticgene technology. In order to verify the homogeneity in composition and molecular weight for all samples and also the successful synthesis it was necessary to make molecular and morphological characterization studies. Specifically, for the molecular characterization size exclusion chromatography (SEC), proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR και DEPT 13C-NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA) were used leading to very interesting results and observations concerning the successful synthesis of all samples. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were employed for the morphological characterization.

This work aim is an efficient modelling proposal for supercapacitors made of activated carbon electrodes which are power components used in many energy storage applications. In the first part of this study, the purpose is to evidence physico-chemical phenomena, electrostatic or electrochemical as well, thanks to characterization and aging tests. The results analysis combined with materials knowledge leads to suppose that the supercapacitor non linear behavior is due to adsorption-desorption processes and also to anomalous diffusion of adsorbed species into the electrode microporous network. These mechanisms in addition with the double layer capacitor principle allow us to define a non linear fractional model with parameters that depend on physic0-chemical characteristics of the cell. The proposed identification procedure is based on the voltage response to charges-discharge current profiles. In spite of the simplicity of this identification method, the model matches very well the behavior of the supercapacitor under current profiles that are typical of hybrid and electric vehicle applications.

In this thesis, we study the Cyclic Hoist Scheduling Problem (CHSP) in automated electroplating lines, when a mass production must be achieved. The CHSP is characterized by specific constraints related to processing and transport resources. To solve it in a multi-parts context, we first elaborate a 2-degree cyclic model and an associated branch and bound algorithm. Then we extend it to more complex configurations. Then, we develop a dedicated heuristic to find a feasible repetitive sequence of hoist moves that minimizes the cycle time, without a priori fixing the cycle degree. Comparisons with existing algorithms are presented to show the efficiency of the proposed heuristic. To reduce the cycle time, we integrate in the general heuristic an algorithm with a set of Minimum Part Set (MPS) configurations’. This one allows us to find the best order in which jobs should be introduced into the line. Finally, we describe a genetic algorithm approach to find a schedule which can reach the optimal 2-cycle. We finally discuss the interest of those various models, based on the promising results obtained and we provide some perspectives which could be explored.

In this thesis, our interest is focused on the Cyclic Hoist Scheduling Problem (CHSP) in automated electroplating lines. The aim of this study is to propose an algorithm to solve the two-hoists cyclic scheduling problem. This one consists in finding a repetitive sequence of hoists’ moves, while avoiding collision between the hoists which share a common track. The objective is to minimize the period of this repetitive cycle for single part-type production. This problem was proved to be NP-complete for lines with a single hoist. The fact that two hoists are available on the line increases the number of constraints of the problem. Then we propose a solving method combining two heuristics and a Mixed Integer Linear Program. It enables us to solve both assignment and sequencing problems, while considering spatial constraints related to hoist’moves.Subsequently, we propose an extension of the model which is adapted to complex lines. Finally, our interest is focused on solving a HSP for which it is necessary to treat in the same facility a…

▼ A non-linear finite element program to simulate the behaviour of infilled frames and plane stress reinforced concrete members under the action of monotonic and cyclic loading has been developed. Steel is modelled as a strain hardening plastic material, and in the concrete model cracking, yielding and crushing are considered. The separation, sliding, and opening and closing of initial gaps at the interfaces between the frame and the infill panels are accounted for by adjusting the properties of interface elements. The non-linear equations of equilibrium are solved using an incremental-iterative technique performed under load or displacement control. The iterative techniques use the standard and modified Newton-Raphson method or the secant Newton method. An automatic load incrementation scheme, line searches, and restart facilities are included. The capabilities of the program have been examined and demonstrated by analysing five reinforced concrete panels, a deep beam, a shear wall, and eight infilled frames. The accuracy of the analytical results was assessed by comparing them with the experimental results and those obtained analytically by other workers and shown to be good. A study of the effects of some material and numerical parameters on the results of analyses of reinforced concrete deep beam has been carried out. Two techniques have been proposed and used to overcome numerical problems associated with local strain concentrations which occur with the displacement control, when path dependent incremental iterative procedures are used for inelastic materials. The displacement control provided with these modifications has been shown to be more efficient than the load control.

▼ Raman optical activity (ROA) is a powerful probe of the structure and behaviour of biomolecules in aqueous solution for a number of important problems in molecular biology. Although ROA is a very sensitive technique for studying biological samples, it is a very weak effect and the conditions of high concentration and long data collection time required limit its application for a wide range of biological samples. These limitations could possibly be overcome using the principle of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The combination of ROA with SERS in the form of surface enhanced ROA (SEROA) could be a solution for widening the application of ROA. In the last few years, the generation of reliable SEROA spectra of biomolecules has been problematic due to non-homogenous colloidal systems forming and low signal-to-noise ratios which complicated detection of the true SEROA signal from the analyte. L- and D-enantiomers give full or partially mirror image chiroptical spectra, this property of enantiomers can be employed to prove the chiroptical activity of the SEROA technique. In this thesis we employed a hydrophilic polycarbopol polymer as stabilising media which has led to the first report of mirror image SEROA bands for enantiomeric structures. This new technique of incorporating the hydrogel polymer as a means to stabilise the colloidal system has proven to be reliable in obtaining high quality SEROA spectra of D- and L-enantiomers of ribose and tryptophan. In an extension of the hydrogel-stabilised SEROA work, we also demonstrate that single nanoparticle plasmonic substrate such as silver silica nanotags can enhance the weak ROA effect. These dye tagged silica coated silver nanoparticles have enabled a chiral response to be transmitted from a chiral analyte to the plasmon resonance of an achiral metallic nanostructure. The measurement of mirror image SERROA bands for the two enantiomers of each of ribose and tryptophan was confirmed for this system. The generation of SEROA for both systems was achieved and confirmed SEROA as a new sensitive tool for analysis of biomolecular structure. In a related project, Raman and ROA spectra were measured for adenosine and seven of its derivative ribonucleotides. Both of these spectroscopic techniques are shown to be sensitive to the site and degree of phosphorylation, with a considerable number of marker bands being identified for these ribonucleotides. Moreover, the SERS studies of these ribonucleotides were also performed. The obtained SERS spectra were shown similar features that confirm these analytes interact with the surface in a similar manner, hence limiting the structural sensitivity of this method towards phosphate position. Short dipeptides such as diketopiperazine (DKP) have been investigated during the last decades as both natural and synthetic DKPs have a wide variety of biological activities. Raman and ROA spectra of linear and cyclic dialanine and diserine were measured to charecterize their solution structures. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were…

▼ This project is a part of a sustained research effort to make houses more affordable and safer. This project seeks to modernize the current prescriptive lateral bracing design of houses to a performance-based design. The aim of this project is to develop a rational holistic model for bracing of cold-formed steel-framed houses. It focuses on the development of the rational testing method and the evaluation procedure for determining the bracing capacity of cold-formed steel-framed wall panels taking into account displacement controlled behaviour for a diverse range of seismic conditions.
Lateral load resisting elements in support of buildings made of cold-formed steel has been of major concern in seismic conditions given the apparent non-ductile behaviour of this type of material. It has been revealed in the research that this form of construction can possess significant strength and ductility reserves. Most bracing elements tend to be made up of a large number of components including structural frames, bracing elements and sheetings. Thus, modelling their potential response behaviour is not straightforward, and there are no standard test methods for determining their capacity in seismic conditions. The various test procedures used by an Australian manufacturer are mainly based on TR440 (Experimental Building Station, 1978) which considers principally the conditions of cyclonic wind. There are no provisions for determining bracing capacity of these walls for seismic performance in Australia.
A comprehensive testing methodology has been developed in this research which is aimed at providing a practical and reliable means of evaluating the seismic resistant capacity of this increasingly common form of construction for the domestic housing market. Whilst numerous loading protocols exist for the pseudo-static cyclic testing of structures, the loading protocol developed in this research was derived from analyses of accelerograms that had been simulated specifically for design earthquake scenarios appropriate for regions of low-moderate seismicity, like Australia. Analyses undertaken were based mainly on magnitude-distance combinations and site conditions that would impose onerous drift demand on low-rise buildings.
Experimental studies have been conducted on full scale isolated wall panels measuring 2.4 m x 2.4 m and 0.9 m x 2.4 m braced with fibre cement boards. A cyclic loading protocol that had been developed based on seismic conditions of Australia was used in the cyclic testing to ensure the validity and practicability of the testing. Important wall parameters such as elastic stiffness, yield displacement, ultimate displacement and structural ductility factor were evaluated from the test results using various existing methods together with the method proposed by the author of the thesis.
Detailed analytical investigations of tested wall panels have been carried out by formulating three different analytical models namely; numerical model, hand calculation method and simplified hand calculation method, for…

▼ We consider performance analysis of interconnected
linear dynamical networks
subject to external stochastic disturbances. For stable
linear networks, we define scalar performance measures by considering weighted H2 – norms of the underlying systems, which are defined from the disturbance input to a desired output. It is shown that the performance measure of a general stable
linear network can be tightly bounded from above and below using some spectral functions of the state matrix of the network. This result is applied to a class of
cyclic linear networks and shown that the performance measure of such networks scales quadratically with the network size. Next, we focus on first – and second – order
linear consensus networks and introduce the notion of Laplacian energy for such networks, which in fact measures the expected steady-state dispersion of the state of the entire network. We develop a graph-theoretic framework in order to relate graph characteristics to the Laplacian energy of the network and show that how the Laplacian energy scales asymptotically with the network size. We quantify several inherent fundamental limits on Laplacian energy in terms of graph diameter, node degrees, and the number of spanning trees, and several other graph specifications. Particularly we characterize several versions of fundamental tradeoffs between Laplacian energy and sparsity measures of a
linear consensus network, showing that more sparse networks have higher levels of Laplacian energies. At the end, we show that several existing performance measures in real – world applications, such as total power loss in synchronous power networks and flock energy of a group of autonomous vehicles in a formation, are indeed special forms of Laplacian energies.

▼ In the present research, investigation was undertaken with regard to the behaviour of precast RC pinned beam-to-column connections, provided by steel dowels, under monotonic and cyclic loading. In accordance with the experimental data in hand, the effect of several parameters on the behaviour of the connection was examined, such as the concrete cover around the dowels, the number and diameter of the dowels, the strength of the grout filling, the imposition of severe deformations (rotations) at the joint etc. In the analytical part of this PhD thesis, a constitutive FE model was developed and calibrated with regard to the available experimental data, to be used for non linear analysis purposes. Τhe calibrated analytical model was further applied for the parametric investigation of the shear resistance of precast pinned connections. The contribution of the work reported herein refers to a proposed relationship for the calculation of the shear resistance of precast pinned beam-to-column connections subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading, under the effect of several parameters. Moreover, an approximate empirical force-displacement constitutive law is proposed for this type of connections, to be used for design and practical purposes.
